Work continues through South Delta on the South Fraser Perimeter Road, the $1 billion highway that will link Deltaport Way with Highway 1 in Surrey. The fourlane thoroughfare is scheduled to open for traffic in 2013.

A Tsawwassen man is in hospital after suffering stab wounds in an altercation at his home Monday night. Police believe three unknown men approached the residence in the 1100-block of Shaman Crescent just before 7 p.m. and rang the doorbell. When the victim answered the door, the men tried to get into the house. A struggle ensued and the homeowner was stabbed. The assailants fled the area. The victim suffered a punctured lung and was transported to hospital for treatment. “The motive and circumstances leading up to this incident have not yet been determined,” said police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks. The incident is still under investigation.

Packed hearing is put on hold As fourth night of Southlands debate is about to get underway, mayor announces month break to hold summit BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

There’s yet another twist in the seemingly never-ending debate over the future of the Southlands. Mayor Lois Jackson announced Monday that a public hearing that began last week has been put on hold until next month. Close to 300 people packed council chambers and the foyer at municipal hall for what was expected to be the fourth evening

of the hearing on the proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan. The most controversial element of the plan recommends Delta apply to the Agricultural Land Commission to have the 538-acre Southlands placed back in the ALR. The speakers’ list had only reached 90 after the first three nights of the hearing. As of Monday, almost 170 had signed up to have their say. It was clear after the first three

days how divisive the Southlands remains for the community. A number of speakers talked about the positive attributes of the Century Group’s housing/farming proposal for the property, while some urged Delta council to talk with Century president

Sean Hodgins about his plan. Opponents, though, were steadfast in their determination not to have development on what they say is prime agricultural land. Jackson said this week it’s clear there was no community consensus and described the Southlands issue as the “elephant in the room” for Delta. Saying even farmers didn’t have one voice on the issue, Jackson said although there is a long history of controversy, she

heard from many who said they want the community to move forward rather than revisit the past. “There are, however, mixed feelings about the urgency to proceed. Some feel it is high time to put this decision to rest once and for all and without delay by applying to put the lands in the ALR,” she said. “On the other hand, many of you requested time to allow the See HEARING page 3

What they had to say at the public hearing

a copy to Mr. (George) Harvie so that it may be reviewed by our solicitor to ensure that it is appropriate for display.” When contacted by the Optimist Monday, Vanstone refused to comment, citing solicitor-client privilege. He said it would be up to council to direct him to comment any further from what the mayor had already read. Southlands the Facts immediately posted the video on the Internet, calling it a “banned video” by council. The group claims the Southlands was removed 30 years ago under questionable evidence. On a website created by Gillis and broadcaster Rafe Mair called Common Sense Canadian, the question was raised whether the banning of the video will lead to a “vetting” of public hear-

ing submissions by civic bureaucrats. The site states: “Imagine the next time you go to speak at a hearing on an industrial project that threatens the environment in your community, you have to gain government approval for your remarks before delivering them! Is this not a slippery slope?” Noting a local resident involved with the production has contacted the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, Gillis told the Optimist he’ll demand an apology from council for impugning his credibility. Those in favour of the ALR recommendations also argued developers regularly come forward with expensive and polished videos and Powerpoint presentations to sell their points of view.

The following is a random selection of quotes from the many who spoke during the first few days of the public hearing on the Tsawwassen Area Plan recommendation to have the Southlands put back in the ALR: John Malenstyn “When I drive into Tsawwassen, and I drive into the residential area, I know there’s good people in Tsawwassen, but there’s trouble makers too. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be farming right there.” Richard Kunz “If council succumbs to corporate interest, it sounds like anarchy and collusion to me, not democracy. Do the right thing, support the majority opinion by showing the same courage and leadership that our chief administrative officer has taken by making this application.” Peter Dandyk “I feel like I’m trapped in a bad western. It’s the one where the judge says we’re going to give you a fair hearing and then we’re going to hang you” Carole Vignale “This is not a simple matter of defending preservation of farmland but a complicated question of neighbourhood respect of all sides, including the major landowner. How is it that one of the original families of modern Tsawwassen, one of the largest employers of town and suppliers of good rental housing, and major contributor to Delta Hospital and other local causes, is not more respected by the Corporation of Delta?” Peter Duffey “The determination of whether the land is suitable for farming of one type of another is a matter for farmers, soil experts and, ultimately, the Agricultural Land Commission. There are many studies that show the Southlands to be good

from Century Group, two representatives from the community that support the ALR inclusion application and one representative each from the farming and environmental communities. The other landowners affected will have an opportunity to appear before the summit to present their views. Following the adjournment Monday, Hodgins told the Optimist he wasn’t aware of the forum plan but is hopeful something will come of it. He said he was also encouraged by the

large show of support during the hearing. “I was very pleasantly surprised and gratified. All I’ve wanted is a chance to find some compromise; maybe this is it,” he said. As far as working out a compromise from his 1,900-unit housing plan, Hodgins noted his proposal could be viewed as a starting point. Southlands the Facts spokesperson Dana Maslovat also said he was surprised by the move. “I guess the hope is the people involved represent-

ing certain areas of the community can come to an agreement and maybe the public will agree to it. If that happens, I think that would be great,” Maslovat said. “Given the polarity of this debate and given the divisiveness of this issue, I’m a little reluctant to think that may come out of it ...I think finding a compromise may be challenging for sure.” Michael Anderson, who spoke against the recommendation last week, was incensed at the move by

Council won’t watch video after getting legal advice

Filmmaker says he’ll demand apology after his reputation is impugned BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

A 13-minute video has become the controversy within the controversy over the proposal to have the contentious Southlands placed back in the Agricultural Land Reserve. During the first evening of the Tsawwassen Area Plan public hearing last Tuesday, supporters of the civic recommendation asked to play a video by Vancouver filmmaker Damien Gillis. To the chagrin of several in the audience who voiced their displeasure, Delta council, after some discussion, agreed to play five minutes of the video, not exceeding the time limit normally allotted to speakers. Councillors were then to view the remainder on

their own time at a later date. The narrated video, called Saving the Southlands, has scenic shots and interview clips of several people against allowing development on the land, including Richmond Coun. Harold Steves and Southlands the Facts spokesperson Dana Maslovat. On the next night of the hearing, Mayor Lois Jackson read a statement noting council had received legal advice from municipal solicitor Greg Vanstone, who said the remainder of the video should not be viewed by council “due to potentially defamatory or inaccurate statements.” The mayor read, “I would request that anyone who wishes to display another video immediately provide

HEARING from page 1 community to fully understand the implications of this proposal and even perhaps to consider alternates. And there we are again, the elephant in the room.” Jackson said the message she heard more than any other was the need for further discussion before an ALR application. “How do we get there? It was suggested that perhaps we can get there together. I heard there is willingness by parties to talk to each

other. However, the public hearing forum does not provide for the type of dialogue that is really needed.” The mayor said the hearing would be adjourned until April 14. By then, a report by a newly-formed “mayor’s summit” would be available for input. The forum for discussion and debate will include Jackson and one other councillor, CAO George Harvie, two representatives

agricultural land.” Ian Kent “Have you noticed both sides of this argument are fighting for the same thing - agriculture? The difference is one side does not have a plan to actually enable farming to be done? Where are all those farmers lining up to get their chance to farm this land? Who can afford it?” Janice Wasik “Here’s a piece of land that has been the centre of controversy for over 30 years and council didn’t even want to consider what could be done with it while developing the area plan. Southlands is controversial because it is such a key element in any Tsawwassen Area Plan. To ignore it is like trying to complete a puzzle with a whole section missing.” Bob Bracken “The Tsawwassen golf course project deserves mention ... thousands of taxpayer dollars were spent helping a private developer remove land from the ALR and push through a market housing project in spite of many of the same arguments and bitter controversy raised against the development of the Southlands.” Laura Dixon “I support our local farmers’ ability to sustain a living and know they must utilize a wide variety of practices in order to be profitable and keep food on our table. However, in Delta we’re well aware of the conflicts that arise when we have a close interface of intensive farming in residential areas. The lands we commonly refer to as the Southlands are particularly unsuitable for intensive farming practices.” Robin Gardner “I also support the regional intent to aggressively preserve agricultural land and to encourage activities that enhance agricultural capability.” council, saying the mayor changed gears when it was clear the majority of speakers were against the ALR inclusion. “Once again it’s council changing the rules in the hearing process. They’re not liking the score, so they change the rules. That’s OK if you’re the queen of Delta, but if you’re the mayor of Delta, it’s outrageous,” said Anderson. Carole Vignale, who spoke at the hearing urging dialogue, said she’s disappointed the forum won’t involve a public discussion.

Conservative MP John Cummins believes an opportunity is presenting itself for a viable alternative on the B.C. political scene. Asked for his thoughts on Christy Clark’s victory in the B.C. Liberal leadership race, the longtime MP for Delta-Richmond East said the result was interesting in that Clark is very much a federal Liberal, which could be philosophically problematic for conservative-minded voters in this province. “I certainly congratulate her and wish her the best, but that said, I think there’s some serious problems because we simply look at the world differently,” Cummins said. “I think there’s room for an alternative here and

ince,” he said. The B.C. Conservatives have a number of things that need to be done and some objectives are well underway, according to Cummins. “They need constituency associations in all 85 ridings and in the last year created associations in about 50 of these ridings.” Cummins, who is involved with the B.C. Conservatives in an advisory role, has been addressing party meetings around the province. In the 2009 election, the B.C. Conservatives, under leader Wilf Hanni, nominated only 24 candidates and had just over two per cent of the popular vote. Currently looking for a new leader, the party describes itself as “B.C.’s only true conservative party.”

Delta police are investigating after some suspicious chemicals were found at a Tilbury area business. Employees arriving last Friday morning at a busi-

ness in the 7900-block of Huston Road called the fire department after discovering a large amount of chemicals left at the site. The fire department called police and officers from the drug section responded.

Department spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said it appears the chemicals may be consistent with those used in a drug lab. Brooks said a team was called in to remove and properly dispose of the material.

when you look at the voter turnout in the last election and consider the way things have been unfolding in the Liberal party since then, I think people are ready for an alternative.” The B.C. Conservative Party is ideally situated to fill the vacuum, he said. “I think that’s a reasonable outcome. When you look at the last election, the provincial Liberal party essentially had the support of probably less than 20 per cent of the population. I’ve talked to a whole lot of people in British Columbia who said they held their nose and voted Liberal in the last provincial election. “There’s a host of people who voted NDP who are really centre-right voters, and I think that’s the real issue, that the B.C. Little House is receiving support on many fronts

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Pastor Paul Woehrle said St. David’s Anglican Church is pleased to partner with the Little House Society. “We are happy to be able to provide meeting space for 12-Step program meetings. But beyond that when we heard about the renewed and broadened vision and purpose for the Little House Society it resonated with what our church wants to do in terms of serving the community and helping people to heal.” The Little House Society is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and advancing education related to substance use, abuse and addiction, and abstinence-based recovery from addiction. It is the society’s hope to develop a template for educational strategies

that would be used by other communities both nationally and internationally. For 27 years, the Little House Society was charged with overseeing a house located on 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen that was used as a meeting place for addictions and related recovery groups. In 2009, the house was destroyed by arson. The society decided to turn this tragic event into an opportunity to redefine its mission and purpose. The board and members decided that not only would it rebuild the house as a multi-purpose facility to be used by recovery and other community groups, it would extend its mandate to look for ways to provide knowledge and support to the community regarding substance abuse issues.

The Little House Society is thrilled to report that its campaign to raise $250,000 is well underway. It has received more than $40,000 in cash donations as well as offers to donate a range of products and services from more than a dozen South Delta area businesses to help build the new facility. Society president Jim Stimson says what is starting to happen is akin to an old-fashioned barn raising. “Many different individuals and businesses take a look at what we are doing and want to support us in whatever way they can. Whether someone has been directly touched by drug and addiction or not, people see the need to address this growing concern in the name of community spirit.” Murray Lott of the Delta Law Office says his family and his firm are proud to be involved. “Many of the problems that we deal with in the law office are rooted in substance abuse issues. In addition, my family has been touched with addiction so I see this as a good investment for our community.” Rod Swenson says his family wanted to make a contribution because it knows first-hand how addiction can affect a family and how hard that can be. “There is much that we need to understand when it comes to addiction so the education role the Little House Society plans to take on will be very valuable.”

Past and present Delta Chamber of Commerce leaders deposited items into a time capsule last Friday. “Today we’re going to be filling this time capsule with some items that people 100 years from now will go, ‘Wow, look what they did, look what they thought,’” said past president Leslie Abramson. The time capsule is meant to honour the business group’s centennial, which it reached last year. “The chamber’s been very busy doing things throughout last year to promote and let people reminisce about where we came from, where we are today and where we’re going,” said Abramson. Current chamber chair John Appleby put in the minutes from the group’s first meeting. It was known as the Delta Board of Trade when founded in 1910. “As it says on the capsule, we are celebrating a century of building and we’re looking forward to another century of growth,” said Appleby. Other items deposited in the time capsule, which will be kept in front of the chamber’s office, included historical photographs, past membership directories, packages from Delta and Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington and Vancouver 2010 Olympics memorabilia. Past chamber presidents Greg Muirhead, Mike Owen, Bob Ferguson and Peter Sziklai, as well as current directors Ian Tait and Michael Anderson, all put items into the capsule. The time capsule is planned to be opened on March 4, 2110.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Human nature strikes again. People are much more likely to tell you when they don’t like something than when they do, a truism that applies to pretty much all aspects of our lives, everything from restaurant service to newspaper coverage. Public hearings, which have never been the most scientific method of gauging community sentiment, are not immune from such behaviour either. Hearings generally tend to draw opponents, those who are upset or concerned by what’s being proposed, often leaving those who are supportive or indifferent at home to attend to more pressing matters. I figured Delta council’s proposal to return the Southlands to the Agricultural Land Reserve was sure to put this pattern to the test. What I find most interesting is the way in which the never-ending Southlands saga is being framed this time around. Previous attempts to solicit public opinion have primarily revolved around development proposals, meaning it was those who were against the projects that had reason to show up. This time, however, by proposing to place the land in the ALR, those opposed, and the ones more likely to attend a public hearing, are actually those in favour of seeing something happen on the Southlands. That’s not to say everyone speaking against Delta’s ALR proposal supports the Century Group’s plans for its acreage, but by turning the question upside down, municipal hall has, perhaps inadvertently, rallied troops that aren’t predisposed to flying their colours. I figured that would be the case going in, but when all seven that got to speak on the first night of the hearing last Tuesday backed Delta’s recommendation, I started to doubt my theory. Then a tide of green T-shirt clad Century supporters began to take over the hearing, far outnumbering the opposing viewpoint over the course of the second and third nights. Does this mean Tsawwassenites don’t want the Southlands in the ALR? Hard to say, for sure, although it’s fair to say the majority at the hearing isn’t keen on Delta making an application to the Agricultural Land Commission. Had the question been presented the other way, asking for comment on a proposal to combine housing and agriculture on the property, I suspect the makeup of the public hearing crowd might well have been different. Framed that way, those opposed to development would likely find greater reason to be heard. You can alter the way you ask the question, but you can’t change human nature.

ALR inclusion wouldn’t change farming possibilities on land DEBBIE McBRIDE

COMMUNITY COMMENT A number of the good people who made their way to the ALC inclusion public hearing likely did so because of an e-mail that was circulated widely throughout Tsawwassen. This e-mail made all kinds of disturbing statements about what would happen if the land were returned to the ALR. I’d like to address one of the more outrageous claims and as I do, I’d like you to think about the veracity of the threat that has incorrectly upset and scared so many. A most egregious statement is made that insists if the land is returned to the ALR it will suddenly then allow the building of greenhouses, piggeries and other sorts of industrial farming. It is being incorrectly stated that particular form of farming is not now allowed.

False by all accounts, yet this falsehood has been promoted. In fact, the Right to Farm Act was brought in by the provincial government in 1996, an act that supersedes municipal zoning bylaws. So that ship has already sailed. Here is what the act really says: “The act also makes changes to the Local Government Act by providing that zoning and rural land use bylaws created by local governments are subject to provincial standards.” So the reality, since 1996, is it’s the provincial government that holds those cards and it is the one that is answerable to the industrial farming hammer being held over your heads. The ALR inclusion does nothing to change that. Frankly, this would be a great opportunity to start lobbying the provincial government to change that legislation so that particular threat can’t be used against residents anywhere in B.C. It does seem to be the threat of choice by developers who buy agriculture property close to urban areas. Let us build houses or suffer the stink and/or inconvenience of industrial farming. It’s quite shameful really, but has been successful in Richmond, Langley, Abbotsford,

Cloverdale and Surrey. Would they actually do it, we don’t know because municipalities all fold and the developers get what they want: more houses on farmland. We hear many times the Hodgins family has deep roots in this community, yet he threatens us with destruction using the same language of every other developer. Do we continue to capitulate to threats and by doing so let developers continue to make farmland so unaffordable those who want to farm can’t afford to? Land cost is their biggest stumbling block and the cycle needs to end and it needs to end now. Let’s lobby the province and demand a change to what is really industrial warehousing of animals and hydroponically growing of vegetables taking place on good arable lands where soil-based crops are capable of being grown. These can easily take place in existing industrial parks where the infrastructure already exists. There are other options available for the Southlands that don’t include housing and industrial farming. BC Eat presented us a viable one during the public hearing. Let’s put on our listening ears and truly listen to the alternatives.

Cartoon & ad are offensive

Editor: I was surprised to see the cartoon that appeared on the editorial page on March 2. This cartoon was not at all in keeping with the type of caricatures that usually appear in the Optimist. It was extremely biased and had no authorship attached to it. The drawing of Southlands Swinery is not funny, in my view. Once again, pigs are being used as a fear-mongering tactic. As a longtime member of this community and one who has contributed countless hours to volunteering with different organizations,

I am offended by both this cartoon as well as the large advertisement in which I am labeled as a bully. By the way, two parcels of land near Highway 17 in Tsawwassen, currently being farmed and currently in the ALR, are not offensive, are they? Do we see any pigs or greenhouses? We benefit from the food produced here and on the many farms on Westham Island. Since the parcels of land in the Southlands have remained fallow for many years, with some work and support from Delta, they would become prime organ-

ic farms, something we urgently need, and would be a bonus for both local tourism and local businesses, something that not too many people seem to think about. Do we want to rely on food from California and Florida (which right now is very expensive because of weather issues) or from China or elsewhere? I sure hope the Southlands is returned to the ALR, from which it should never have been removed, and used for what it has always been designated: to grow food. Jean Wightman

Hot tub owners have become used to the smell and harsh effects of chemicals needed to keep the water free from germs. You know what we mean: red watery eyes, irritated skin, discolored swimsuits and lingering odors. SAY HELLO TO A NEW APPROACH. AquaFinesse softens your spa water and

Editor: Re: FHA plotting hospital’s future, March 2 Thank for reporting the event at our hospital when staff had the opportunity to comment on our much loved and often used facility. It’s loved because of those in our community who support, work, become treated and care for our precious community asset. I find it distracting that

Fraser Health finds its way to the hospital to meet with a selective audience and fails to offer the community a chance to comment. Having been associated with the facility and other support organizations, I feel all our community services and leaders need a chance. I am intrigued that there are many ideas that could see the hospital grow. Are there others who can equal-

ly contribute their vision of the hospital’s growth? Might other organizations join the facility to have it be further vibrant? Don’t stop at cardiology, look at psychiatry, aged and disease response, aging of those in community living and let’s not forget about the ever-increasing traffic and the likelihood of traffic-related trauma. Editor: My husband and I have lived in Tsawwassen for 38 years and, like many of the citizens who have presented briefs at the public hearing, we believe Tsawwassen is one of the finest communities in Canada. However, contrary to the views of the “no growth” faction, we do not believe the gates of Tsawwassen should have been locked immediately after our arrival and no one else allowed in. There is room for some growth without changing the nature of our community. We need more choice for empty nesters and for young people to ensure extended families can remain close to each other.

We don’t want our adult children forced to move farther and farther out into the Fraser Valley, and aging parents to search for a condo in White Rock. Sean Hodgins’ excellent plan to combine housing, parkland, and small farms in one area would provide a semi-rural housing area, almost like living in a small village. All of us in Tsawwassen would have access to a beautiful park with walkways, bicycle paths and small streams as well as a nearby source of fresh vegetables all summer long. Our community is already turning into a retirement community so the increased traffic that everyone is so concerned about

would be minimal. We have been retired for over 10 years now and we take our car out about four days a week — and never during rush hour if we can avoid it. Ever since the hearings of 30 years ago, I have felt it is hardly fair for Tsawwassen to refuse to take any of the growth that every other municipality in Metro Vancouver is coping with. Our municipality is the only one whose population has decreased in the past few years. I would like to emphasize that I am totally opposed to putting the Southlands back in the ALR. A large farm in the middle of a residential community would create all sorts of problems. Joan Wallace

Buy development rights and farm land Editor: You never know where you might find a sustainable solution to challenges like the Southlands. A 2002 article in the Gourmet magazine on the plight of farmers shows a sensible way to save farmland. It addresses the problem of farmers being land rich but cash poor. A land trust gives the farmer a one-time payment to compensate for the difference between what their land is worth as a farm and what it would be worth on

ed in the number of houses that can be built on the property, and their rights to subdivide or develop it is wiped out forever. The program could be funded from lotteries. In the case of the Southlands, it would mean giving a one-time payment to a farmer who agrees to soil-based farming on the land in order that he can purchase it from the Century Group that has been holding the land in a fallow state for many years. Jim Ronback

Editor: I spoke last week at the public hearing addressing the recommendation to refer the Southlands to be considered for a return to the ALR. I spoke against this initiative. Something I would clarify, however, is that I do not believe that either Delta council or the Corporation

of Delta staff — including CAO George Harvie — is the “enemy” in this matter. What I believe is “the enemy” is the difficulty the community perpetually faces in endeavouring to rationally discuss issues like this one. I have no “inside track” on this matter, but I believe council and staff have

struggled to find a way to address this issue that can accommodate the extremism of a position that is looking for a simplistic solution to a complex problem and a different position that wants to understand the problem and to try to address it in a more effective way. Firth Bateman

the open market to developers. In the U.S. the transaction is called a purchase of development rights or a purchase of agricultural conservation easement because it places a permanent limitation on the property, meaning the land can neither be divided nor be used for any purpose other than farming. It requires a non-profit land trust organization to merely hold the easement and oversee it. Owners both present and future are limit-

VICKI HUNTINGTON

MLA’S REPORT As she begins her tenure as premier, I ask only one thing of Christy Clark — that she lead this province into a renaissance of open and honest democratic government. That’s all. B.C. and its people have been bruised by this government and its secretive, arrogant, centralized leadership. Now is the perfect time for the new premier to heed demands for a renewal of democracy in B.C. and a change to the way in which politics is done. How might things change? Certainly, government needs to change how it responds to the people. But for the elected MLAs to actually do their job, and to represent the people as they expect us to do, our political institutions also need to change. There are three broken elements in B.C. politics. One is the centralization of power and influence — and the resulting failure to respond to and respect the people. Second is the man-

ner in which the legislature does its business. And third is the structure of the party system itself. We all have sensed the centralization of power, but what we might not have seen is how that influences the decisions of government and sets up the reality that the people — and the opposition — become nothing more than distractions. And when that power has an ideology, it naturally listens to those who reflect and can make that ideology a reality. We saw it with the NDP and we are seeing it with the Liberals. We are witnessing the remaking of the institutions of government to serve a corporate citizen. Power has responded to industry in many ways: the Forestry Act was gutted; the Clean Energy Act has centered power in the cabinet; the new Water Act contemplates the sale of water licences, which will mean the eventual control of that resource by industry. Environmental legislation has been manipulated to favour developers. Regional land use powers have been stripped. And the power to oversee the use of resources is now centered in one super min-

istry — a secret decision made exclusively by the former premier. We are losing trust in our institutions, which means we are losing faith in government. So how might we stop the unrestricted centralization and abuse of power? First, the elected caucus should choose its leader. That doesn’t mean favour won’t be curried and the leader won’t exercise power, but it does mean caucus will have influence and provide a check and balance to the unrestrained exercise of power. It does mean there is an internal mechanism that can resist the centralization of decision-making. A caucus should be able to vote secretly during internal debates and the decision of a caucus must influence cabinet policy. Secret votes are the only way to ensure caucus members can’t be influenced by fear or favour as they express the will of their constituents. The second issue is how the legislature does its business. Our system is supposedly one where the government is held to account during question period. Where legislation is tabled and debated. Where

the throne speech is deliberated and where the budget is reviewed. It is the forum, supposedly, in which the people are represented. But in reality, no one is listening because no one has to listen. Except for the occasional problem a minister takes under consideration, not one word spoken in the legislature has any impact on government. The only impact is through the media, which means the Fourth Estate is the actual repository of opposition power. In this modern world, with everyone watching and capable of being involved, the members of the legislative assembly must have influence if representation is to mean anything. And that means a substantial change to the legislative committee structure is critical. Lastly is the manner in which parties choose their candidates, whether at the riding or leadership level. The people won’t and shouldn’t tolerate the kind of government we’ve been getting. We need change. And I hope I can support Premier Clark as she leads us into a democratic renewal of politics in B.C.

Daily commute taken over by a flock of Angry Birds

iPhone is great, but this app proves to be too addictive BARBARA GUNN

At one time, I spent my daily commute doing productive things. I would sit on the bus and the train topping up my shopping list. Or reading something from the best-sellers’ list. Or tackling a crossword puzzle. It was good, my commute. You could not call it wasted time. You could call it time well spent. No more. These days, I have forsaken the novels for something called Angry Birds. Time well spent, it ain’t. I stumbled upon Angry Birds a few weeks ago. This, after my husband gave me an iPhone for Christmas. I learned how to turn it on. I learned how to make a call. And then I did what iPhone users the world over are supposed to do. I found myself some apps.

might take a back seat to the catapulting. “This isn’t like you,” he said. “I KNOW!” I said. “But I can’t stop! I am SO angry at these Angry Birds!” Angry, too, are my commuter seatmates, who’ve been listening to the sound effects of the Angry Birds game. “Help!” I said to my iPhone expert, courtesy of my iPhone texting. “How the heck do I turn off the stupid Angry Birds music? People are giving me such dirty looks!” The iPhone expert calmed me down, taught me how to adjust the volume on my Angry Birds game — and in the process, fed my Angry Birds addiction. The iPhone, I must say, is a brilliant device, and some day, if I’m lucky, I will master 10 per cent of the things it’s able to do. For now, however, I’d like to regress and do a little unlearning. I really don’t need those Angry Birds. But I sure as heck need my novels. 03098028

LIVING MATTERS

“You’ve GOT to install Angry Birds,” a friend told me. This, a friend who is somewhat of an iPhone expert, and able to do things with her iPhone that I cannot. Like take pictures, say. And watch videos. And blow-dry her hair, for all I know. “It’s so much fun,” she said. “But be careful. Angry Birds is really addictive.” Turns out the iPhone expert is correct. For two hours a day — give or take a half hour on either side — I do what I never imagined: I catapult stupid little birds high in the air, trying my best to wipe out stupid defenceless creatures. “What exactly are you doing?” asked my husband, after I’d walked in the front door, still playing with my Angry Birds. “It’s called Angry Birds,” I said. “It’s an iPhone game. The idea is to shoot these stupid birds toward these stupid green things and try to get to the next stupid level.” The husband looked at me, suspicious that dinner

IT’S WHY I LOVE TO DRIVE.

FOR THE BEST SERVICES:

Long wait finally over for Paxton Ladner pitcher now enjoying his first Major League Baseball spring training camp after signing with Seattle last week At last, James Paxton has begun his professional baseball career as a member of the Seattle Mariners. The 22-year-old lefthanded pitcher from Ladner signed with the club on Friday, ending a lengthy negotiation process that began soon after the Mariners selected him in the fourth round of the Major League draft last June. “I’m excited just to be here. The is awesome,” Paxton told a media gathering at the Mariners’ spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona. “I have learned a lot about business in the past two years. I’m just glad to be here as a Seattle Mariner and excited to get my career started.” The University of Kentucky graduate was originally a first round supplemental pick (39th overall) of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 but failed to come to terms with the club prior to the mid-August deadline for college eligible draft picks. He was then ruled ineligible to return for his senior year at Kentucky when it was alleged his agent Scott Boras had contact with the Blue Jays, which is a NCAA rule violation. Paxton attempted to stay sharp by pitching for the Grand Prairie Airdogs last spring — an independent

league team in Texas. While his representatives were hammering out deal with the Mariners, he regularly worked out at home and spent some time in California, throwing at the Boras Sports Training Institute in Aliso Viejo. “I have been working hard and feel like I am ready to go,” said Paxton. “Realistically, I am ready to pitch and compete. It will be up to the Mariners of where they have me go and what they have me to do. I will be ready to do anything. “I grew up a Mariner fan. I watched them on TV my whole life. It’s fun to finally be here now.” Paxton’s talent began to emerge in his Grade 11 year when, as a 16-year-old, he was selected as the top pitcher of the B.C. Premier Baseball League, a circuit where most top players are 18. The following year did not unfold as neatly as he would have liked. After battling through some injuries early, Paxton settled down and finished the year strongly. By that point, however, the Major League draft had come and gone and he went undrafted. While the pro scouts passed on him, the college coaches did not miss his talent. Paxton accepted a schol-

In his first season he was used mainly in spot situations against left-handed hitters then worked his way into the rotiation As he grew older, he became bigger and stronger.

He grew three inches and put on 20 pounds during his three years in Lexington and the results are evident on the mound. The 6-foot-4’s fastball is regularly clocked in the low to mid 90s and he developed a wicked curve

ball. Paxton’s coming out party was a dominating performance against Ole Miss. “That was just a kind of take-off point for me,” he said of the Ole Miss game. “That game was really moti-

vating for me. I have always been a really hard worker and that game might have been the starting point for me. It showed me what I can do and motivated me to keep on going with it and get even better.”

Traher’s natural hat trick helps Ice Hawks even series MARK BOOTH

A natural hat trick from Spencer Traher has the Delta Ice Hawks and Richmond Sockeyes all even after two games in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference finals. The second-year forward scored all three second period

goals as the Ice Hawks broke a 1-1 tie en route to a 6-1 victory on Sunday at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The Sockeyes had opened the series 24 hours earlier with a 4-3 overtime win. The bestof-seven affair continued last night in Ladner and shifts to Minoru Arena on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) and

Friday (7:15 p.m.) for games four and five. Two of Traher’s goals came shorthanded, including a spectacular rush that finished off his hat trick. Kye Benjaminsen scored twice, while Cody Fidgett exchanged first period Spencer Traher goals with Richmond’s

Patrick Hunter. Richmond carried much of the play in the opening period and beat Ice Hawks goalie Nick Enegren on three different occasions, only to hit the frame work behind him. “We definitely had a little bit of luck go with us on those shots but we didn’t get many breaks the previous night,” said Delta head coach Dave McLellan, who was

back behind the bench after serving a two-game series. “ Third period goals by Liam Harding and Benjaminsen had given the Ice Hawks a 3-1 third period lead in the series’ opener, however the Sockeyes answered with tallies from Jake Roder and Hunter to force overtime. Rudi Thorsteinson capped the comeback 83 seconds into the extra period.
