Cummins is calling it a career

After almost 18 years in Ottawa, popular Conservative MP announces he won’t be seeking re-election BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Longtime Delta-Richmond East Conservative MP John Cummins won’t be running in the next federal election, which could be just around the corner. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office announced last weekend that Cummins, an MP since 1993, as well as Treasury Board president Stockwell Day (Okanagan-Coquihalla) and Transport Minister Chuck Strahl (Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon) won’t be running for the Conservatives in the next federal election.

Cummins also made the announcement to local riding association members Saturday. Saying he was tired of the long cross-country trips to Ottawa, Cummins confirmed his retirement plans with the Optimist Monday. It’s not clear, however, if he’ll leave politics completely. He said he hasn’t made a decision, as of yet, on taking a greater role, and perhaps leading, the B.C. Conservative Party. Unlike the nomination process to find his replacement federally, Cummins has plenty of time to decide if he’ll take over the provincial Conservatives, who will select their leader May 28. As far as who will become the federal Conservative candidate in this riding, that will be decided as soon as next Monday. As of Monday, at least four candidates have already surfaced to replace Cummins, and more could follow, prior to a nomination meeting at the Sundance Inn in East Ladner.

DeVries and Saip eyeing Tory nomination

Constituency association in hurry to find replacement as meeting set for next Monday BY

It looks like there will be at least two prominent Delta names in the running for the nomination to replace Conservative MP John Cummins in Delta-Richmond East.

Former Delta Chamber of Commerce president Maria DeVries confirmed she would be seeking the nomination at the Conservative riding association’s meeting in East Ladner next Monday. DeVries, who ran third in the Delta council by-election last

fall and was poised to run for the Liberals in the 2009 provincial election before stepping aside for Wally Oppal, has been involved in several different community causes and local organizations. While she has experience with politics and is on the riding association’s board, she has never been

elected to office. Also expected to have his nomination papers filed is longtime Delta school board chair Dale Saip. He confirmed his interest in running Monday. The veteran trustee, first electSee NOMINATION page 3

Maverick MP speaks his mind

As he prepares to leave federal politics, John Cummins simply wants to be remembered for a job well done BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Maverick John Cummins hopes his constituents feel he represented them well after almost 18 years of federal politics. As federal election speculation swirls, the ruling Conservatives won’t have their longtime MP, practically a sure thing in DeltaRichmond East, for the next race. Cummins announced last weekend he won’t run in the next election, a decision he arrived at after talking things over with his wife Sue. “She’s been a great supporter over the years and always very encouraging. She was always there when something was going on but she’s glad I’m not going to be making that trek (to Ottawa),” he told the Optimist this week. Cummins was first elected under the Reform Party banner in 1993, capturing more than 40 per cent of the vote. That election saw him defeat the Liberals’ Karen Morgan by 4,000 votes and incumbent Conservative Stan Wilbee by 8,000. It would be the start of a series of even big election victories under the Canadian Alliance and then Conservative banners. He

NOMINATION from page 1 ed in 1987, has also been a fixture in the community for many years. A former high school football coach and former president of the Ladner Business Association, Saip is direc-

tor of team services for the Vancouver Giants hockey club. He went to school in Richmond before settling in Ladner and then moving to Tsawwassen. He said while he enjoys

his job with the Giants, the opportunity for such an important political office doesn’t come around too often. Richmond businessman Howard Jampolsky was the first to announce his candidacy, while realtor Keith Roy is also expected to file

nomination papers. One prominent name with strong Conservatives ties that won’t be in the running is Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, who announced she wouldn’t be seeking the nomination. Anyone interested in running must have their

nomination papers filed with the riding association by tomorrow since those papers must be in the hands of party officials in Ottawa by late Friday afternoon, said riding association treasurer and nomination committee member Ray Christopherson.

ing out individual residents on their personal matters as their elected representative. Cummins, who has a son Martin, daughter Carolyn and two stepdaughters, Kristina and Erin, said his decision not to run again was based on a few things, mostly his desire to no longer make constant crosscountry trips to Ottawa. “I’m just sick and tired of getting on airplanes twice a week and crossing three time zones,” he said. “My wife took me to the airport and while we were on the way there I told her, ‘Gee, I didn’t want to get on that plane this morning.’ But I got on and I e-mailed the prime minister’s assistant for a meeting and by the time I got to Ottawa a meeting had been set up with the prime minister this past Tuesday, and we discussed it. I told him then that was it. But I really appreciate all the good service I got from those good folks at Air Canada. “It was my hope when I first got elected that when I finished, if I’m walking down the street people would want to smile and say hi and job well done. I wouldn’t want them walking by saying, ‘We sent that guy to Ottawa and when he got there all he thought was about himself.’” He said an election could be held in early May if the minority Conservative government falls after a vote on its March 22 budget. The nomination meeting will be at the Sundance Inn at 7 p.m. Only members of the party as of Feb. 25 will be eligible to vote.

The tributes are starting to roll in for longtime MP John Cummins, who announced last weekend he won’t be running for the Conservatives in the next federal election. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said the riding has lost “an outstanding politician and representative who has for more than 18 years never wavered in the positions he has taken on issues that impact his riding, his province and his country. “I have known and worked with John both in his constituency office and as a municipal and provincially elected col-

league for many of those years,” she said. “I admire John’s determination to remain true to his beliefs and work tirelessly for his objectives even when doing so has attracted criticism from within and outside his party.” Phil Eidsvik of the B.C. Fisheries Survival Coalition said Cummins was a rare politician. “I think John is one of the finest human beings I’ve ever met and had the pleasure of working with. He always put the wishes of his constituents ahead of himself and in some ways it was a detriment to himself personally, but it was certainly a good thing for the fisherman of B.C.,” said Eidsvik.

Delta Farmers’ Institute president John Savage described Cummins as “a very responsive and intelligent person” who served the community well. “It’s a shame to see him go but like he said, flying to Ottawa every week, that’s four, five hours a day, is tough, especially if you’re from the west,” said Savage. Cummins represented the community well and hopefully his replacement will have the same level of dedication, said Delta Chamber of Commerce chair John Appleby. Diane Askin, president of the Ladner Business Association, said, “We were very lucky to have him be a part of the Ladner Business Association and participate

and contribute to the Ladner Business Association.” Lois Wilkinson, chair of the Delta Hospital Foundation, said Cummins was a staunch representative of the community. She noted Delta has been lucky to have politicians at all three levels, including Cummins, “fight tooth and nail” for the hospital and hospital services. Former Delta South MLA Val Roddick said there’s a reason Cummins always won his riding by such big margins. “We all have issues that we’d work on and he had his he stuck with and worked on over the years ... he always got the votes and where there’s votes there’s got to be something.”

Woman threatened after HARRIS NURSERY & FLORIST confronting burglars JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Delta police are on the hunt for two suspects after a brazen afternoon robbery in Tsawwassen last Friday. At around 3:20 p.m. two unknown men entered a home in the 200-block of English Bluff Road. The suspects gained entry through an unlocked window while the homeowner was resting.

She was awoken by noise and confronted the two men who threatened her. She then ran from the house calling for help. The two suspects fled the area separately, one on foot and one in a green Ford Explorer, which was abandoned a short distance away. Officers responded and called in a K9 unit and the Air One police helicopter but were unable to locate

the suspects. The first suspect (the driver) is described as 5’9”, 180 pounds with little or shaved hair and blue eyes. The other suspect is described as being between 30 and 40 years old, wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, torn blue jeans, white shoes and gloves. They made off with various items from the home, including computer equipment and a cellphone.

Vancouver to improve landfill gas collection System operating well below provincial standards JESSICA KERR

Jackson said this week she was pleased with the outcome of the meeting. “They were very concerned as well,” McGill said in a report to council Monday night, adding the meeting was a positive one. “They committed to making improvements to the gas collection system with the ultimate goal being to be above the 75 per cent ministry guidelines.” Vancouver staff said there was some improvement between 2009 and 2010. Last year’s numbers put the system working at about 52 per cent efficiency. At the meeting, both sides committed to improving communication between the two municipalities. Another meeting was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. 03169335

After a meeting with Vancouver’s mayor and city bureaucrats earlier this month, action is being taken to address concerns around the performance of the gas collection system at the landfill in Ladner. In February, Delta council learned the Vancouver Landfill’s gas collection system is working well below provincial standards. The system is supposed to help control odours and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. Provincial regulations state the landfill gas collection system must be at least 75 per cent efficiency to control odour and emissions. In 2009, it was working at 44 per cent effi-

ciency. Council and municipal staff expressed outrage at the finding. “This information is startling,” chief administrative officer George Harvie said. “This landfill is not working properly.” Delta Mayor Lois Jackson called the information a “little bit of a kick in the teeth” after all the work on the Zero Waste initiative over the last year. Delta was also concerned because Vancouver had not yet released the 2010 emission numbers. On March 4, Jackson, Harvie and Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, met with Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and several senior staff members to discuss Delta’s concerns.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Someone’s going to have big shoes to fill. The announcement by longtime MP John Cummins last weekend that he won’t seek re-election after almost two decades in Ottawa leaves an enormous void in local political circles. The first time I heard the name John Cummins was back in the late 1980s when the Social Credit government of the day was giving B.C.’s teachers the option to either unionize or form non-union associations. Cummins, a North Delta high school teacher at the time, was, not surprisingly, firmly in the non-union camp. I remember him telling me how a lot of teachers were considering the nonunion option and how the vote would be pretty close. When the result was in and Delta teachers had voted in favour of unioninzing by a count of something like 997-3, I thought to myself, “Wow, this guy’s got his finger on the pulse of what’s happening, we really need to get him in government!” Cummins resurfaced a year or so later, running in the 1998 federal election as a Reformer, a little-known party that was still five years away from making an electoral breakthrough. If memory serves me correctly, he finished a distant fourth that year behind victorious Tory Stan Wilbee, Liberal Fred Gingell and the lady to the right of me, the NDP’s Sylvia Bishop. In hindsight, these two instances are entirely consistent with the John Cummins we’ve come to know over the last 20 years: He does what he thinks is right, not necessarily what’s popular It’s an approach that has endeared him to voters in these parts, earning him reelection five times since his initial win in 1993. Recent elections haven’t even been close with Cummins garnering more votes than all his challengers combined. Although his propensity for telling it like it is has made him a favourite with the electorate, it’s often got him in hot water with colleagues, ruffling feathers all the way to 24 Sussex Drive. He calls it like he sees it, even if it paints his own party in an unflattering light. Not too many politicians would be willing to pay the price, both personally and professionally, to stick to their guns, but Cummins has been doing just that for the past 18 years. His principled stance and outspoken behaviour have undoubtedly cost him the cash and cachet of a cabinet post and the fisheries portfolio is poorer for it. However, Delta voters have been the beneficiaries of having someone in Ottawa willing to stand up on their behalf. They’re big shoes to fill indeed.

New agricultural trust provides Century something to chew on SYLVIA BISHOP

COMMUNITY COMMENT As a foodie, I could not help but smile at the latest development in the continuing drama of public hearings and an aptly named new society. BCEATS served up a surprise offer to purchase the Southlands on the same day Mayor Lois Jackson postponed the public hearing in order to hold a mayor’s summit. Naysayers to inclusion of the Southlands in the ALR, who claim there is no interest by anyone to farm it, have been served a new dish to digest. The BCEATS (British Columbia Ecological Agricultural Trust Society) offer brings to the table $5 million cash and $200 million tax credit through Environment Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program. The buyer intends to use the best farmland for organic mixed-use farming and grain crops. A LEEDS building for processing will be built.

We’re talking jobs, here. And the most sensitive lands will be preserved for wildlife habitat and environmental protection. Among other possibilities is an interpretative centre focusing on bird and other wildlife habitat. Now there’s something to ruminate about. Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program encourages landowners to sign over their land to a trust. They receive a tax benefit, made possible through the Income Tax Act, applicable to 100 per cent of their income (private or corporate) and which they can carry forward for up to five years. Lands so assigned under this program cannot be mortgaged and cannot be re-sold, according to information supplied by the Land Conservancy. To date, over 873 ecological gifts have been donated across Canada, with a value of over $550 million protecting over 138,000 hectares of wildlife habitat. Stewardship of the program is under the auspices of Environment Canada. Could this be the win-win we are looking for? The consensus the mayor’s summit is trying to achieve? The owner, if he has an appetite for it, gets cash and a substantial tax credit. No more public hearings. No development application,

grinding days and nights of meetings followed by more public hearings. The headache and frustration are gone. The community gets to retain the semi-rural atmosphere the majority craves, where a portion of the Southlands is organically farmed and the rest is preserved. No more public hearings. No grinding days and nights of meetings followed by more public hearings. The rancor and divisiveness evaporate. And a 30-year problem is finally laid to rest. Make no mistake: this opening offer is only the appetizer. Before we get to dessert, there are a few more courses to digest. Things could sour if Century Group doesn’t respond to the offer. It wouldn’t look good to not respond, not under the microscope of this community. It can counter and we can watch from the sidelines as this deal simmers in the pot. As to alleged housing needs the naysayers claim are necessary, those will be more than met by the buffet of variety Tsawwassen Springs and the neighbourhood plan of the Tsawwassen First Nation will serve up. It’s time to put our steady diet of public hearings, debate and argument aside. It’s time for BCEATS.

Summit won’t find consensus on the Southlands

Editor: With regard to the announcement at Delta council last Monday that the public hearing on the submission to include the Southlands in the ALR would be adjourned because there was, in the mayor’s repeated words, “no consensus,” I ask: What did you expect? I find it difficult to believe those at municipal

hall that wrote the latest version of the Tsawwassen Area Plan actually thought the clouds would part and down would come “consensus” on the future of the Southlands. Consider: • Municipal staff spent countless overtime hours putting together the first completely inappropriate and misguided version of the area plan. Our tax dollars at work.

• The municipality commissioned an Ipsos Reid study to determine if the community wanted the Southlands developed. Our tax dollars again. The survey showed more than 60 per cent wanted it left alone. What did you think the others wanted? Toast and coffee? • Now the mayor is going to waste more time in a self-aggrandizing exercise

Shared knowledge needed if public is to come to general agreement on property

Editor: Consensus appears to be the buzzword in Delta since March 7. Consensus is defined by MerriamWebster as solidarity of belief or sentiment. It is used to describe both general agreement and the process of getting to such agreement. This obviously indicates the need for shared knowledge. If knowledge is not shared, negative consequences such as isolation and resistance to ideas occur. Knowledge constitutes a valuable, intangible

asset. Being kept in the dark causes animosity. We have seen plenty of that these past days. It is absolutely imperative the Southlands plans (and there are three) are displayed now by Delta for all the affected people to see. It is unfortunate council was negligent in not doing this prior to any public meetings. Once more people discover the incredible facets of the Century plans, and what they can offer this community, a mutual social solidarity and collective

intelligence will evolve towards harmony and eventually bind people to one another. Century won a coveted award in 2010 on agricultural urbanism planning concepts on these very plans. This must not be ignored. We must be cognizant these innovative ideas of the integration of built and natural environment within an existing residential area are within our grasp. No more secrecy. Let the talks begin. Lula Reed

in navel-gazing called the mayor’s summit to come to the conclusion there is no consensus. You already know that, so save the taxpayers’ money. • It was stated repeatedly, monotonously in fact, that the area plan was not about considering Century’s proposal for development on the Southlands. Now Delta is halting the public hearing for that specific purpose.

All this demonstrates is that council can be bullied, but it’s not by citizens of Delta, it’s by a developer whom you’d rather placate than the majority of the people in Tsawwassen. As a taxpaying citizen, I am asking you to please read the following very, very carefully: There is never, ever, ever going to be consensus on the question of the future of the

Southlands. Not in your lifetime. Not in my lifetime. Not in any member of council’s lifetime. Not in anybody’s lifetime. Ever. The best you can hope for is a majority opinion. You have it. So, please, stand up and do what you’re overpaid to do: abide by the wishes of the majority. Repeat reading this until it sinks in. Marnie Huckvale

Voice not heard at hearing, summit

Editor: I live in Tsawwassen, have two small children and my family and I live in Forest by the Bay. So, yes, the Southlands is in my backyard too, but I am not in support of it being returned to the ALR. Like many other young families in Tsawwassen, I believe we need change and progress here. Although I am not sure what that looks like yet, I know that if the Southlands is returned to the ALR, we will never have an opportunity to find out. What is of most concern to me is I would like to

believe I have a voice in what happens in my community and that the public hearing is the forum for that. I attended every meeting, I wrote my name on the list and received my little number of hope, #155. After four nights of paying a babysitter so I could speak, my number was never called. Instead, I now wait with hope in hand to see what the mayor’s summit brings. As I look at the people invited to attend this private meeting of a public issue, I can’t help ask the question: Who is invited and why? The Century Group and

two of its representatives? That’s common sense as it is the major landowner. A farmer and an environmentalist? Again, reasonable. Two representatives from the community that support the ALR inclusion application? Having sat through the meetings, I think I know who they might be. Where are the two people from the community that are not in support of the ALR inclusion application? Where is my voice and opinion, or that of any other random residents of Tsawwassen, for that matter? Jennifer Crosby

Couple has no ‘Doubt’ it will return to see more Sidekick productions

Editor: As newcomers to Tsawwassen, my husband and I have been on the lookout for things to do without having to travel to Vancouver. He happened to see the advertisement in the Optimist for Doubt, a Parable (a movie we both thoroughly enjoyed) at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Being theatre lovers, we immediately called and reserved tickets. Not knowing where the arts centre was, the kind lady on the other end of the line explained, exactly how to get there from my house. We arrived 20 minutes before curtain, as suggested, and were greeted by cheery people at the box office who made us feel as if we were their personal friends

STARTING MARCH 18TH SPECIAL

The set was well thought out and beautiful. The stage and the room itself are quite small by theatre standards and we were amazed at how Sidekick transformed this space. It didn’t take long, once the lights came down and the opening scene started, to believe we were spying on these people in their own surroundings. There was nothing to criticize about this production. Everything, including the beautiful costumes, was wonderful. Our only criticism would be to our community. Perhaps locals don’t realize the level of talent Sidekick Players puts on stage. The room should have been filled that night and every night of the play’s run. With this caliber of the-

atre in our own backyard, and with the price of gas, why would anyone want to travel to see theatre in Vancouver? The Sidekick Players Club’s presentation of Doubt, a Parable is comparable to anything we’ve seen in much higher-priced venues and with the relaxed theatre seating, a much better experience. We will be supporting this group to ensure we have it around for a long time. Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved. We certainly have no “Doubt” we will be back. S. Terrett Editor’s note: Doubt, a Parable continues at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre at 8 p.m. nightly through Saturday.

Great service at Delta Hospital keeps couple coming back even after move to Langley Editor: A big shout out to the ER staff at Delta Hospital and all the Deltans who supported it during those days when we thought it was going to be shut down. Five years ago, my husband Larry had a severe heart attack and the Delta ER staff gave him a second chance with their expertise

being invited into their home. When the doors opened and we entered Patti McGregor theatre, we were surprised at the seating arrangements. Small tables for two were scattered about the room with larger tables set up for groups of about six to eight. There was a wine bar available as well as nonalcoholic beverages. We chose our table, settled in with our wine and sat listening to soft music while waiting for the play to begin. After a short time, the lights dimmed and the play began to unfold. From the opening “sermon” by Father Brendan Flynn to the closing church bells, we were glued to this story.

and caring. We have moved to Langley now, but have kept our doctors in Ladner, so we get a chance to visit every few months. I was recently diagnosed with cancer, had surgery at Delta Hospital and was on my way back to health when the incision got infected at Christmas. We

decided the Delta ER was the place to go for help. I can’t remember the names of all the nurses who tended me on my eight daily visits for IV antibiotics and dressing changes, but they were fabulous people, busier than I’ve ever seen but always with time for kindness and a joke or two with us outpatients.

I want to thank all of those wonderful nurses, and my doctors Turnbull, Segal and Nagra, who all have me back on track. And a thank you to my Langley home care nurses who have made sure my healing took place. Bless them all. Monica Barrett Johnson

Don’t overlook quake issues

potential to generate a huge tsunami. On our inner coast the effect will be nothing like the recent disaster in Japan, and we should have up to three hours advanced warning, but at the same time the damage may not be trivial. If geological common sense were to prevail, all of the Southlands would be farmed for future generations, perhaps along the lines suggested in the recent BCEATS offer to purchase. If, on the other hand, some development is the outcome from the mayor’s summit, it should be confined to a small strip of higher elevation. Adrian Wightman

Editor: Recent events in Japan and New Zealand should give the mayor’s summit members pause for thought as they decide the fate of the Southlands. The unasked question to date is not related to agricultural capability, but rather is this land really well suited for development? Being geologically part of the Fraser River delta means much of the Southlands will be subject to liquefaction ground failure in a major earthquake, as noted on the Geological Survey of Canada’s Geomap Vancouver. A recent example of what this can mean is the

Maintaining Youthfulness

Tips and treatments for keeping, or restoring, that youthful glow

JESSICA KERR

A

fter a certain age, most women (and some men) will go to great lengths to keep their skin looking younger.

Sunscreen is still important, she says, as well getting plenty of sleep, drinking lots of water and exercising can all help improve the look of skin.

These days, there are several different ways to diminish the look of wrinkles, brown spots and other visual indicators of age.

At this point, the skin’s cycle is starting to slow down and needs a little extra help.

Starting in adolescence, says Judy Drew, who owns Atlantis Day Spa in Tsawwassen and has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, it’s important for teens to exfoliate regularly and use sunscreen and a basic moisturizer daily. Using sunscreen, even through the winter, is key to slowing the clock when it comes to the age of your skin. “It prevents the aging process,” Drew says.

Louise Dannhauer, part owner of Spa Time in Tsawwassen, recommends teens also use a good pH balanced cleanser and a product with salicylic acid to help with any blemishes. That simple regime should be all that’s needed into your mid-20s.

Once you get into the mid-30s to 40s, most people will start to see quite a change in their skin, she says. And how you cared for your skin in your younger days has a direct effect on how it ages. “It really relates to how we take care of our skin when we’re young,” Drew says, adding skin has a good memory when it comes to sun damage. For those looking to turn back the clock for their skin, there is a whole range of treatments and procedures that can help shave off years. For those looking to bring back a bit of that youthful glow, Drew recommends a chemical peel or micro-dermabrasion. Both offer a more intense exfoliation than can be achieved at home and can be done separately or combined. Micro-dermabrasion can help erase fine lines and improve the look of wrinkles as well as repair sun damage and pigmentation problems. The treatment stimulates cell regeneration and promotes smoother, brighter and younger looking skin.

For people in their mid-20s to 30s, Dannhauer recommends starting to look for products with anti-aging ingredients.

I am a newcomer to the practice of yoga. After visiting a few other studios, I settled on Shanti. The studio, physically, has a pleasing, contemporary design, with a calming quality. As well, Shanti does not insist on a rigid, traditional approach, but incorporates instead a mix of the old and the new, while at the same time clearly mindful of the ancient thinking and practices from which yoga stems. The staff are friendly, warm and knowledgeable. Both the beginner and the experienced are welcomed and accommodated. After several months with Shanti, I can truly say I’m very glad they’re here. Tips for staying stylish and cool during hot yoga MEGAN FISCHER Hot yoga studios have been popping up all over the place, a testament to the practice’s growing popularity. But, what makes hot yoga different than a regular yoga class? The temperature and humidity of the room are key; hot yoga classes are held in studios heated to 40.5 C with 50-percent humidity. The increased heat warms the muscles to achieve a deeper yoga practice and cleanses the body by causing it to sweat away toxins. The situation presents a unique fashion challenge: how do you find something that (a) is stylish, (b) keeps you cool, and (c) keeps you relatively covered at the same time? Here are some dos and don’ts for getting geared up for hot yoga: Don’t pull out an old cotton

T-shirt. Cotton is notoriously bad for sucking in moisture and will be drenched with sweat and become cumbersome within minutes of starting class.

show sweat and can become transparent when wet. Instead opt for dark colours; they hide sweat marks and make you look slimmer.

Do opt for dri-fit or performance fabrics. They will not only help wick away sweat and keep you cool, but the nanotechnology behind them also kills bacteria and prevents odours that can develop over time.

Do go for fitted garments. They will move with you as you flow through the various poses and won’t drag you down when they become wet. Yoga teachers also like their students to wear fitted garments, as it helps them analyze body position during class.

Don’t wear just any old gym shorts; they aren’t designed to move with you through all the various yoga poses and bends. Given the tight quarters in most yoga studios, you don’t want to give the person behind you more of a show than they bargained for.

PHOTO BY STUART GRADON/ CALGARY HERALD

For hot yoga classes, opt for fitted garments that are stretchy and breathable.

Do minimize the number of layers you put on. Ladies: look for tops with built-in support, rather than layering a sports bra under a top. Men: if you have the goods and feel comfortable, feel free to take off that shirt; if not, stick to a lightweight dri-fit tank.

Do find a length of bottom that works for you. Not everyone can pull off tiny spandex shorts, even if they might keep you cooler. Just make sure that whatever bottom you choose has some stretch.

Ultimately, yoga practice is about self-love and acceptance; wear what makes you feel comfortable. When in doubt, opt for something black, stretchy and breathable and you’ll be ready to take the heat.

Don’t opt for (light) grey or white or other light colours; they

LIVING MATTERS The other day, I returned home. Not from the supermarket or from the office or from the gym. I came home from a hot place. There were palm trees in the hot place. There were lemon trees in the hot place. There were people walking around in flipflops and tank tops and golf skirts. Their legs were the colour of chestnuts. They looked relaxed and peaceful. And warm. “It was exquisite,” I told a friend after I’d returned home, cranked up the heat and put on a blazing fire. “I could SO live there.” “Really?” asked the friend. “You wouldn’t miss the seasons?” I stared at her, and thought of the coconut smells at the hot place. No, I told her. I would not miss the seasons.

Sun Devils second at curling provincials Shawna Jensen rink produces best finish by a South Delta team in 27 years after winning tiebreaker game The South Delta secondary curling program capped a successful and most memorable 2011 season, on and off the ice, as hosts of the B.C. High School Championships last week at the Richmond Curling Club. Not only were the Sun Devils praised in their efforts in putting together the threeday event, they turned in their best result in 27 years. Shawna Jensen’s rink finished tied for second in the girls‘ competition with a 52 record. Their only losses came against defending champions and eventual winners South Kamloops, as well as Fort Nelson. A tiebreaker was needed to determine the silver medal winner and South Delta pre-

vailed in a close and exciting game against Fort Nelson with Jensen making some clutch shots down the stretch. Her team also includes Krista Jensen (lead), Kaitlyn Sim (second), Kayla Graham (third) and Madison MacArdell (fifth). The girls are coached by Ron Graham who heads up the SDSS curling program. It’s been a busy stretch for Jensen and her teammates after making their firstever appearance at the B.C. Juvenile Girls Curling Championships a week earlier in Lake Cowichan. Representing the Tunnel Town Curling Club, the girls’ turned in a respectable showing with a 1-2 round-robin record

that included a narrow 2-1 loss to eventual champion Corryn Brown of Kamloops. It bodes well for next season with the entire team eligible to return at the same age level. Meanwhile, the Sun Devils were also represented in the boys division, where a young team led by returning skip Cody Tanaka was competitive in most games and finished with a 2-5 record. South Delta easily could have had a couple more wins with a little more luck in some close games. They did gain some valuable experience, especially first-year players Alex Masarsky, Louie Wong, Jackson MacKinnon and Donny MacKintosh.

Both SDSS teams look to be in excellent position to earn berths to the 2012 provincials, which promises to be a much different and colder location in Dawson Creek. Championship chairperson and SDSS boys coach James Brown thanks the school and district for all their support in making the tournament a huge success. He also praised the committee members who worked tirelessly in all aspects of the tournament, and the Tunnel Town Curling Club, which provides more ice time and support than most clubs in the province. “Without their commitment to youth curling, we could not have the success that we are currently enjoying,” he said.

Clare produces school record against his hometown team Irish senior scores eight goals in 9-9 tie with Pacers It was a school record performance for Sam Clare that just happened to come against his hometown team. The Grade 12 student at Vancouver College established a new high water mark for the varsity field lacrosse team by scoring eight goals and assisting on another during a recent game against the Delta Pacers on the new FieldTurf Sam venue at the city Catholic school. The Fighting Irish needed every one of Clare’s goals as the teams battled to a 9-9 draw. The Ladner native, who controlled the midfield and attack zones for VC, is on the team list to suit up for B.C. at the Canadian Championships, to be held later this year. Clare has also received numerous inquiries 03129261

from universities on both sides of the border to play field lacrosse and continue his education. “I’d like to make a career in Kinesiology and sports medicine and be able to give back to the game,” he said. “There are a lot of opportunities open to me and I’m looking at all the options.” Clare recently helped the Delta U19 Footmen win bronze at the Clare provincial championships. He also suits up for the Senior Elite team with the Burnaby Mountain Selects program which is run by the coaches at Simon Fraser University. He is looking forward to the upcoming box lacrosse season where he will split his time between the Delta Islanders’ Intermediate “A” and Junior “A” teams.

Judy, we will miss you deeply. You are forever in our hearts.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother on Thursday, March 10th after a short illness. Mom was born and raised in Dauphin, Manitoba and we believe it was this good 'prairie stock' that helped carry her through the ups and downs of life with grace, fortitude, strength and love. Mom and Dad led full lives with lots of travel, friends and family. The last fifty years, off and on, here in Tsawwassen. Mom enjoyed her gardens, especially her fresh cut flowers which graced her table every week. She golfed, getting a hole in one, she curled getting an eight ender and later when bending was not as easy, bowling. Mom’s number one joy though was her family as revealed in the contents of her safe. No jewels just the homemade cards and letters given to her by her children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Dick, survived by her three children, Ken (Brenda) of Ontario, Richard (Diana) of Delta, and Lynn (Robin) of Delta, thirteen grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Some of her last words were ' I love all my family'. We will miss you terribly Mom, be in peace with Dad.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
