Dale Saip has been chosen as the Conservative Party’s federal election candidate in DeltaRichmond East. The 51-year-old Delta school board chair beat four other candidates for the coveted nomination in a vote by riding association members Monday night at the Sundance Inn in East Ladner. Saip came out on top after four rounds of preferential voting, edg-
ing Kerry-Lynne Findlay 78 to 66. “For the people who came out and supported me, thank you very much. For the people who didn’t make me their second, third or even fourth choice, you now what, that’s great because that’s what this is all about,” said an emotional Saip, his family by his side, during his acceptance speech. “It’s about expressing our views and our differences. No one will outwork me. It’s not about a job, it’s not about politics, it’s about public service,” he told a crowd
that had thinned out considerably by 10 p.m. when the result was made public. John Cummins, the MP here since 1993, as well as two other longtime B.C. Conservative MPs, recently announced they won’t be running in the next federal election.
Just a couple of days later, nomination meetings to find their replacements were announced. The rapid process is highly unusual because most political nominations give candidates more time to file and sign up new members before an actual vote. Only riding association members as of Feb. 25 were eligible to cast a ballot, which meant the usual controversies associated with mass membership sign-ups were avoided. It left only a relatively small number of party stal-
warts to decide the next candidate. Don Brooks, president of the riding association, said the number of members eligible to vote was around 500. At Monday’s meeting, only 146 ballots were cast, although a number of people who wanted to vote were disputing their ineligibility with representatives from party headquarters. Concerns about a snap election prompted the quick nomination. See SAIP page 3

Deadline looms for stimulus projects Most have to be completed by the end of the month BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Time is ticking for Delta as a March 31 deadline is looming for a number of major construction projects around the municipality. However, it looks like everything will be completed on time. The federal government’s 2009 budget included an accelerated and expanded
infrastructure funding program. The B.C. government agreed to match federal funds and Delta took advantage of the offer. The municipality submitted 13 grant applications for nine different projects as well as a joint application with the Delta Gymnastics Society. Delta was successful in obtaining funding for seven of the projects. Two other
local infrastructure projects have also received funding from alternate sources. In all, the municipality undertook nine projects and seven of them, the ones funded through the federal economic stimulus program, must be completed by March 31. The projects total more than $30 million, with Delta’s contribution coming in at about $9 million.

SAIP from page 1 It’s been widely speculated another federal election could be called as early as this week as Finance Minister Jim Flaherty was getting ready to rise in the House of Commons Tuesday to unveil a budget. The opposition would have several voting opportunities to topple the government, thus triggering an election that would most likely take place in early May. The five candidates who filed their papers by last Friday’s deadline were Saip, former Delta Chamber of Commerce president Maria DeVries, realtor Keith Roy, Richmond businessman Howard Jampolsky and Findlay. Each of the candidates was given 10 minutes Monday night to address a standing-room only audience in excess of 300. The first speaker was Roy, who went over his experience and involvement in Conservative politics. He listed land use, criminal justice, size of government and the deficit as key issues. He noted Delta has been totally ignored on such land use controversies as the South
Fraser Perimeter Road. Saying he has a proven tack record for identifying and implementing programs, Jampolsky said the Liberals might try to bring in a big name candidate because they’ll see Delta-Richmond East as a potential swing riding with Cummins gone. Saip, first elected to the school board in 1987, went over his family’s Conservative roots. “My heritage is of Conservative values, and so is my heart. I value family, fiscal responsibility and small government that lets people make their own choices ... I believe that now more than ever this country needs a majority Conservative government.” He also insisted he wasn’t showing up looking for a career opportunity in a seemingly safe riding. A member of the Vancouver Giants junior hockey team front office, Saip noted his school board has one of the lowest administration costs yet ranks among the top districts in the province. Saying she would have

Findlay, a lawyer, told the audience she didn’t live in the community but neither
did Cummins when he was first elected. She said serving on local council, school boards or committees isn’t the same experience when it comes to federal matters. After the winner was announced, an elated Saip was congratulated by the other candidates and was

also warmly congratulated his family, friends and many supporters. While quite a few in the crowd wore buttons to show their support for him, many could not cast a ballot due to the membership cutoff date. Prior to the speeches,
Brooks read a letter from Cummins, who was unable to attend due to his commitments in Ottawa. Cummins’ letter noted contrary to information that had been circulating, he was neutral on the nomination process and wasn’t endorsing anyone.

B.C. Hydro is encouraging Delta residents to join millions of Canadians in support of Earth Hour 2011 by turning off their lights this Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by WWF and supported provincially by B.C. Hydro. The goal of the event is to encourage individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics in an effort to conserve power and in doing so, demonstrate support for the fight against climate change. Last year, Delta reduced its electricity consumption by 1.5 per cent during Earth Hour. Provincially, the load dropped by 1.04 per cent. The community of Burns Lake measured the highest reduction in consumption in
B.C. at seven per cent. “British Columbia is a leader in North America in conservation and Earth Hour provides the perfect opportunity for all of us to make one concerted action at the same time to showcase our leadership,” said Minister of Energy and Mines Rich Coleman. “It’s simple, individual actions like this that can help us achieve our target of meeting two-thirds of our electricity needs through efficiency and conservation by 2020.” Dave Cobb, B.C. Hydro’s president and CEO added, “Earth Hour’s goals complement our conservation strategies and we fully support programs that get people thinking about how they can reduce energy waste and use year-round.

David Hancock, who has been studying bald eagles for over 50 years, is continuing to reach out to the world in a tech-savvy way. And right now might just be the most exciting time to “tune in” all year. Hancock initiated his Live Eagle Cam project about six years ago when he installed a camera in a tree in Sidney, outside of Victoria, that held refuge to a young eagle pair. Now there are four more nest locations being monitored by cameras in the Lower Mainland, two of which are in South Delta, a hotspot for eagle families, according to the veteran biologist. “I always say from a world perspective, Vancouver is the eagle capital of the world, but when you get down to it, Delta has more nests than anybody,” said Hancock, founder of the nonprofit Hancock Wildlife
Boutique Blanche
The live feed isn’t limited to those studying the peculiarities of the species as Hancock says a big priority is to get it into the education mainstream. In fact, some teachers have already begun streaming the camera feed in their classrooms. “The big thing they have to learn is about these relationships with nature. I mean, we’re part of it, it’s not us and them. Until the world learns that we’re part of it, we keep going on abusing it and that means we’re abusing ourselves.” Hancock hopes by getting young students involved, they will begin to understand just how crucial it is to look after the environment and its species. Not only does Hancock’s website already provide public discussion forums for each nest, he has also devoted certain forums especially for teachers and their students. To follow the eagle families, which will soon give birth to little eaglets, visit www.hancockwildlife.org.

Foundation. And since the five nests all currently bear eggs, it feels like Christmas for Hancock and other avid eagle observers, especially considering the lack of food along the West Coast for the birds. “It’s quite exciting for the people that follow eagles,” said Hancock, “because we all worried a lot that, with so many starving because of no chum salmon through the whole late fall and winter, it would really bring down the adults.” Hancock and his team have taken eagle observing to the next level with the installation of infrared cameras at some of the locations to allow viewers to watch all the nighttime hustle and bustle. “I mean, the biologist just folded up his telescope when it got dark and went home because he couldn’t see,” he said. “And now we find that, my god... the night is another really intense activity period for eagles.”

Beach Grove Laser has had some exciting developments recently. The skin care clinic is now offering Affirm laser treatments, which Beach Grove director of clinical care Mary Seitz describes as a leading facelift alternative. “It’s a machine for women who decide it’s time to do something for their skin but don’t want to have surgery,” she says. “This one fits the lifestyle of a lot of women, working women, who can’t get off work for a week to have something done.” The laser produces great results while clients have only a short period of downtime, Seitz says. How many cubes does it take to fill a foam pit? About 6,000 of them! From March to midApril, Thrifty Foods in Tsawwassen is sponsoring the Kids 1st’s Foam Cube Campaign, helping Delta Gymnastics raise money to fill two large foam pits at the new Delta Sport Development Centre currently under construction in Ladner. Customers can purchase the five-by-five-inch foam cubes for $2 each. Thrifty Foods will match donations up to $5,000, and in return one of the pits will bear the company’s name. “Our company believes in a healthy lifestyle,” said store manager Andy Carter. “We fully support this new centre as it will be there to give kids in our community an opportunity to stay active and healthy. We are happy to help with this campaign.”

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW
While Tsawwassenites continue to scuffle over the future of the Southlands, the neighbouring Tsawwassen First Nation is moving full steam ahead with its multi-faceted development plans, including a proposal to construct almost 1,700 housing units. There are a host of differences between these two situations, most notably the governing bodies, but there are enough parallels to ask the question: Does one affect the other? The answer depends on whom you ask. Those opposed to Southlands development will point to what’s proposed for the TFN reserve, as well as the redevelopment of the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club, and conclude there’s plenty of housing stock in the works. The folks over at municipal hall have also been shopping that line to some extent, although they’ve done so in connection with the lack of projected growth in Tsawwassen’s town core. Delta’s crack at updating the Tsawwassen Area Plan last fall included areas for higher density housing that didn’t go over too well, to put it mildly, with some members of the public, so the plan that resurfaced earlier this year eliminates that component, pointing instead to what’s planned by the TFN. Despite a recognition of the need for greater housing variety, including a report from its own housing task force, the powers that be at municipal hall have made it clear they’re not going to ram anything down people’s throats. I can certainly understand the reluctance, but I have to wonder whether it makes sense for a community to hitch its housing requirement wagon to another government? That’s not intended to be a knock on the TFN, it’s simply a recognition that the band will build what it wants, when it wants and where it wants. It will do so based on what’s in its best economic interests, not necessarily what’s best for Delta, or Tsawwassen in particular. There’s no doubt the TFN’s plans will provide housing options for locals, but for those with concerns over 99-year leases or a lack of say in decision making, they might not turn out to be the right alternatives. I’m not suggesting there’s an easy fix out there when it comes to providing housing variety, and I’m not saying the Southlands is that answer, although it’s heartening Delta is at least willing to broach the subject with the Century Group. What I am saying is leaning on someone else, whether that’s the TFN or another jurisdiction, to potentially solve our problems might not work out in the long run.
Cheap land can’t be found, so prices will continue to climb DAN SOUTHARD
COMMUNITY COMMENT I’ve been asked why I don’t attend public meetings regarding the Southlands. The answer is simple: I don’t want to. In fact, the list of ways I’d rather spend an evening is quite long, and includes such things as counting the individual strands of fur on my dog. It’s not that I’m ambivalent about the Southlands. I just have no desire to spend my evenings in a crowded room with the air so thick with animosity that you could spread it on toast and pass it off as Vegemite, the most hateful of all spreadable foods. As much as I’d like to, it’s pretty hard to avoid the subject of the Southlands. However, rather than focus on the question of ALR inclusion, I’d like to touch upon the link some have made between housing costs in Tsawwassen and
development of the Southlands. The pro-Southlands development gang have long been pushing the premise that if Sean Hodgins’ proposal for the Southlands were to come to fruition, housing in Tsawwassen would become affordable to a wide range of first-time buyers, allowing our young adults to remain in the town in which they were raised. Though, I’m not sure how Hodgins’ posse have come to such a conclusion. Richmond has grown exponentially over the last 20 years, and yet the housing prices are higher than in Tsawwassen. By the way, how many people do you know who grew up in Richmond in the 1970s or ‘80s and still live there? Probably none. Why would we then assume that large-scale growth in Tsawwassen would create a community in which our youth could, and would, choose to remain? Anywhere you have a desirable community, reasonably close to a major urban area, which has a finite amount of developable land, you’re going to have high prices. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s the fact. The high cost of the land, coupled with the cost getting from

bare land to a completed project, invariably drives developers to do everything they can to maximize profits. This means building to a standard that isn’t affordable for most first-time home buyers. As such, all new homes come with stone countertops and floor tiles, and all the other high-end accoutrements. Add to that the over $60,000 built into the price of the average new detached home in taxes, and you see that truly affordable housing can only occur where land is cheap, or government subsidies are in play. Neither of these are the case in Tsawwassen. There’s also a bigger issue here, and that’s the “everything for everyone” attitude that has become prevalent in this province. We don’t serve our youth well by perpetrating utopian dreams. It sounds harsh, but the reality is we’re still in the jungle, and as government debts and unfunded liabilities grow, this jungle is going to become even fiercer. If our youth aren’t properly prepared for the hunt, they’ll be left with the scraps. The sooner we open their eyes to that reality, the better.

Question boils down to one of control of their neighbourhood unless they just don’t care. People throughout time have fought hard to gain their rights, and are doing so today in other countries. I think we should keep our right to control our future and the future of our community. I don’t think we should let the ALC decide what is best for our community. I don’t know what people are thinking when they want
Not much in offer for Southlands’ owner
Editor: Re: New agricultural trust provides Century something to chew on, Community Comment, March 16 Sylvia Bishop’s column describes a supposed “offer” for transfer of the Southlands to an agricultural trust for $5 million in cash plus a “tax credit” of $200 million under a federal ecological gifts program. The opinions expressed could be dismissed as merely frivolous if it were not for the fact there are so many unanswered ques-
tions raised by this “offer” that the column may seriously mislead people. The column suggests this “offer” should be taken seriously. In reality, this “offer” might be a good description of a satirical solution to the Southlands issue, but it does not advance real public debate. Did the author consider whether this supposed “offer” really amounts, at best, to the landowner simply giving the land away for nothing? At the risk of giving this credence, among the many questions that arise are:
What value would be given to the land that is “gifted” in order to result in such a tax credit? Will the tax credit simply offset tax on capital gains from disposition of the land? What is the bottom line benefit or cost to the landowner? I do not know the answers to these questions and I do not believe the author knows either. If the author wishes to suggest the landowner simply give the land away for nothing, then say so. Just do not dress that opinion up as if it is something else. Brad Dixon
to blindly give away that choice. Saying yes to the ALR is asking the mayor and council to take away our right to vote on the future of the Southlands. This is not about who owns the land or what they want to do with it in the future. It is a simple question: Do you want to have control over what happens to the Southlands or give away that right? Editor: Re: Couple has no ‘Doubt’ it will return to see more Sidekick productions, letter to the editor, March 16 I would like to thank S. Terrett for her letter. Because of it, my husband and I decided to go see Doubt: a Parable. The show was every bit as good as she described. I am ashamed to say we have lived in Ladner for nearly 15 years and this was only the second time we have been to a Sidekick performance. It will not be our last. Shirley Orrick

If you are for inclusion into the ALR, you give away any chance to have a say in what is done with the Southlands. You give the ALC your choice. If you say no to the ALR, you are saying you want to have a chance to say what happens to the land. To me, it’s a no-brainer. Why would anyone want to give away their right to have a say in the future development (farming or whatever)

Editor: I believe in keeping things simple and looking at problems and issues with this in mind. People tend to overanalyze things and complicate the issues in this way. If we look at the ALR /Southlands question, it is no different. The question is: ALR or no ALR? Forget all the arguments of what type of farming, building or anything else.

This year, I have decided to put on a happy face where the taxes are concerned. In other years, I have not worn the happy face at tax time. In other years, let’s just say, I have looked forward to doing the taxes as much as I looked forward to, oh, a Monday at work following two weeks on Maui. Tax time did not make me happy. I did not much care for the hours spent cozying up to a calculator and a file folder full of receipts and statements of earnings and government forms that called for scads and scads of numbers. Cats, you cozy up. Calculators, not so much. But this year, I have

it a chore again! “So,” said the husband, surveying the stuff — the tax stuff — that I’d spread all over the kitchen table. “How exactly are you going to make this fun, Ms. Happy Face?” “Well,” I said. “First, I’m going to, uh, find some paperclips. And some postit notes. And some rubber bands. And a magic marker. And a stapler.” He looked unconvinced. “And then I’m going to, uh, make some tea,” I said. “Yes. Some nice herbal tea.” The husband nodded. “And when does the fun part kick in?” he asked. I looked at the piles of paper, and tried valiantly to hang on to the smile. I sensed that the Ghost-ofTax-Years-Past was sidling up beside me and trying its best to bring me down. “Soon,” I said. “Real soon.” The fun part, I told him, would certainly come. Just as soon as I’d taken a nap.

decided, I will have a fullon attitude change. I will not only do the taxes. I will do them with gusto. I will enjoy the process. I will embrace the process. I will wear a face that says Happy. “Guess what I’m going to do today?” I asked the husband. “I’m going to do the taxes!” I was smiling as I said it. “Are you OK?” he asked. “OK?” I said. “I’m great! This is going to be so much fun! Now let’s get out those T4As!” The husband looked puzzled — and no wonder. On most occasions when my husband has heard me utter the word “fun,” it has been included in sentences that contain other words. Like “afternoon nap,” say. But it was time, I told him, for an outright change in outlook. Time for a root canal? Let’s try to have a blast, I say! Time to defrost the freezer? Crank up the tunes, and you’ll never call

Did you know the best way to prevent aging is to wear a sunscreen every day? UVA (Aging) rays penetrate deeper into the skin causing sun damage that can take years to show up on the skin’s surface. UVB (Burning) rays are primarily responsible for sunburns. Studies show that 90% of the aging process is from environmentally induced aging. So if you do nothing else, applying a sunscreen 365 days a year will postpone and limit the inevitable. Even on the cloudiest days when the sun isn’t visible to the naked eye, damaging UV rays can induce permanent damage on our skin. That’s why no one ever debates the necessity of sun protection anytime skin is exposed to daylight. However some people are still not applying a sunscreen as part of their daily skin care regime. Sunscreen is commonly thought of as heavy, pore clogging or downright unpleasant, making the skin greasy and increasing sensitivity. Thanks to breakthroughs in technology, sunscreen is severing the stigma of being unpleasant. Atlantis Day Spa offers a wide range of Dermalogica sun care prod-

Vehicles staying on the road longer your vehicle, a regular oil change is the service most likely to help prolong its life on the road. Be sure to check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended oil change intervals based on the conditions under which you typically drive. Replace the oil filter with every oil change and use a high-quality motor oil that meets the specifications recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer to help your
engine get the protection it needs. In addition to engine oil, drivers can also help keep their vehicles on the road longer simply by monitoring the other lubricants and fluids in their engine. Check your owner’s manual to find information about where fluids are contained, exactly how to check them, the type your vehicle uses and how much should be in each “reservoir.” If you see drops of fluid
under your vehicle, you should be able to identify them by colour or consistency. A few small drops are probably not a cause for concern, but you should take note of small puddles and consult your mechanic. Choosing the right fuel for your vehicle can also make the difference between trouble-free driving and costly repairs. Some of the world’s top automakers — Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota and

Getting stuck in traffic can push even the most mindful motorists beyond the normal bounds of safety and fuel economy. Did you know trying to make up time in traffic with frequent speed changes, quick starts, hard braking and other uneconomical driving habits can increase your fuel consumption by up to 25 per cent or around $500 a year in wasted fuel? In tests, variations in speed caused a 20 per cent increase in fuel consumption in one test and 48 per cent in another, even though the average speed for all drivers remained at 80 km/h. Drivers who maintain a steady speed save the most fuel — and money — by far. Not only will you consume less fuel and save money, traffic flow will be smoother, your exhaust emissions will be lower and driving conditions will be safer. Another thing that helps maintain a steady speed, of course, is using cruise control for highway driving where it is safe to do so.

However, on hilly terrain and where traffic conditions permit, you will consume less fuel by allowing your speed to drop slightly when you travel uphill and building your momentum again when you roll downhill. Did you know that hard braking causes fuel use to go up? This happens when a driver keeps a foot on the accelerator — feeding fuel to the engine — then brakes at the last minute. It’s more fuel efficient to drive smoothly by letting off the accelerator early and easing on the brakes. Also during city driving, where about half of the fuel you consume is used to accelerate your vehicle, you can conserve as much as 15 per cent by pressing the accelerator pedal gently and gradually. One of the easiest ways to prevent this is to choose a high-quality gasoline, like all three grades of Shell gasoline, which contain a nitrogen enriched cleaning system that helps clean and protect your engine from the build-up of gunk.” No matter how new or old the vehicle, keeping up with regular servicing and choosing the right fuel can help protect your engine and keep your wheels on the road longer. www.newscanada.com

According to a study performed by the survey gurus at R. L. Polk & Co., Canadians are keeping their cars on the road longer than ever before. Forty-three per cent are still on the road today after 15 years, up from 28 per cent in 2000. Proper maintenance helps reduce fuel consumption One of the most important things you can do to reduce your fuel consumption and emissions is to keep your vehicle properly maintained, especially after a Canadian winter. Did you know, for example, that worn or malfunctioning spark plugs can
cause the engine to misfire, resulting in unburned, or wasted, fuel? Dragging brakes can significantly increase fuel consumption because your vehicle has to work harder to overcome the resistance. Consult your owner’s manual to learn about the
proper care and maintenance of your vehicle. Follow all the service recommendations and change the air filter, spark plugs, engine oil and other fluids accordingly to ensure you get optimum performance and fuel efficiency. www.newscanada.com

1. Lube oil and filter replacement to keep your engine clean.
You’ll want to rinse off all the salt, put your summer tires back on, get the paint protected and give the interior a good cleaning - as well as taking care of any and all summer maintenance which might be required. Here are some tips and points to ready your wheels for warmer weather and summertime road trips. Exterior: Wiper blades play an extremely important role in increasing visibility. Replace every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering. Check the tires’ tread depth. Also check the tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, which could indicate the need for a wheel alignment. Also look for any bulges and bald spots. Check under the hood: Check all fluids. There are several fluids that require attention, including engine oil, power steering fluid, brake and transmission fluids, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant. The antifreeze/coolant should be refreshed every two years. Review your service manual and change any fluids that might need to be replaced, or take your ride to your favourite shop to have the work done professionally. Don't take fluids lightly - many a mechanic says that they’re the life-blood of your vehicle. If you neglect them, you shouldn’t expect your car to be healthy for the long term. Also make sure to change your air filter on time as well, as a plugged or dirty filter can cost you performance and mileage. Check hoses and belts: A belt that fails can affect the electrical system, air conditioning and power steering, as well as the cooling system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorating from within, so old hoses and clamps that appear to be in marginal condition may need to be replaced. Remember that no matter how new and advanced your car might be, it still needs to be maintained. If not, it could emit 50 percent more pollution or use 50 percent more fuel than a vehicle www.countrytireland.com which has not been www.tireland.ca neglected. Note that such neglect will void your new-car warranty. If you have any questions about maintenance, check your owners manual.

The first step is to check to see if those tires will be useful next winter. Are the treads deeper than six millimetres? Is the rubber crack-free? Depending on your driving habits and how often
you drive, winter tires should last for a few winters, but if you’re still in doubt, ask a professional at your dealership or local tire retailer. If the tires are still safe for next year’s snowstorms, your next move is to ensure they’re stored properly. Clean off any salt residue, dry them off and then store them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. In other words, don’t turn them into backyard tire swings for the summer. www.newscanada.com

With the ice melting and the flowers blooming, it’s time to change your tires. Winter tires are crucial to safe driving on snowy and icy roads, but keeping them on during the warmer months of the year creates unnecessary wear and tear, making them less effective when winter rolls around again and also puts your safety at risk. But even after your threeseason tires are aligned and in place, the question remains: What do you do with those winter tires?

Once a week. How long have you been involved? Since January 2011. Why did you start skating lessons? To learn to skate very fast so I can play hockey. What do you like best about skating lessons? Wearing my hockey helmet and hockey gloves and skating very, very fast. How does skating at Ladner Leisure Centre benefit your life? It keeps me strong and healthy so I can play football and soccer and baseball. What other things you do to keep active? As well, taking those first steps away from parents on a slippery surface and then mastering skating skills are huge steps toward independence and self confidence. This year, Delta will offer Learn to Play Hockey in the Spring at Tilbury Ice and Summer skating lessons at Sungod. No need to wait for Fall to learn to skate or polish your skills! For more information on parent and tot lessons, call your local rec centre or to find out more ways to stay active in Delta, call Parks, Recreation & Culture at 604.952.3000 or go to www.corp.delta.bc.ca.

Looking to build off best season ever
Junior “A” Islanders finish re-structuring of management and coaching staff after Greg Rennie doesn’t return STORIES BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
The Delta Islanders have completed the re-structuring of their management and coaching staff as they look to build on their best season ever in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. General manager Rick Clark has appointed Jack Watson as the team’s new head coach. Clark, who was promoted from assistant GM, and Watson replace Greg Rennie, who opted not to return for a third season after serving in a dual role. Watson comes to the Islanders with experience as an assistant coach in the B.C. Junior and Western Lacrosse Association with the Coquitlam Adanacs. “Jack is bit of an old school guy who is excited to be back in the game again,” said Clark. “We feel he is the right person to keep this franchise moving forward.” Delta will also have some continuity on its coaching staff with Dave Pirog returning as an assistant.

Ryan Keith is one of many key returning players for the Delta Junior “A” Islanders who will have a new coach for the coming season. He worked with Rennie the past two seasons. Rounding out the coaching staff is former Islander standout
Dane Stevens. The homegrown product plays in the National Lacrosse League with Edmonton and enjoyed
a couple of outstanding seasons with Delta before concluding his career in Ontario.
“We’re very excited to have Dane onboard,” said Clark. “He brings the knowledge of playing at the pro level and is someone the players can identify with and have an instant level of respect for.” Watson is already leading the team through informal workouts, with main training camp slated to open next month. Clark has also been busy on the trade front, sending Danton Nicholson and Cody Craven to the Port Coquitlam Saints for Chris Jones and Jamie Takiya. Craven was acquired from the Adanacs last season, while Nicholson played for the Islanders’ intermediate “A” team. Jones is an aged up intermediate who still has two more years of junior eligibility. He produced 22 goals as a rookie and added 19 more last season when he notched 44 points in 21 games. “He is a lefty who will give us more offence,” said Clark. “He played with Mike Mallory and Graeme
Stewart growing up so there is a level of comfort for him coming here.” The Islanders finished last season with an 11-10 record and won its firstever playoff series against Burnaby before bowing out in three competitive games to eventual Minto Cup champion Coquitlam. One of the reason behind acquiring Jones was to be in a better position when standout Logan Schuss returns from his sophomore season at Ohio State University. Schuss heads an impressive list of returning players that includes first team all-star Mike Mallory, who was third in league scoring. Michael Berekoff, Ryan Keith, Matt Messenger, Cody Hawkins, Sean O’Neil, intermediate call-up Eli McLaughlin and goaltender Blake Duncan also will be key contributors. “Once we made some key deals, we felt we had our most competitive team in years and think we are well positioned to do that again,” Clark said.
Ice Hawks head coach Dave McLellan plans on returning for 2011-12 season for the 2011-12 season. The former coach of the B.C. Hockey League’s Burnaby Express was a scout for the Nanaimo Clippers when he came onboard in October. Delta finished with the second best record in the Pacific International Junior Hockey
Tides at Tsawwassen Pacific Standard Time. Height in feet
League and lost a seven game semi-final series to the Richmond Sockeyes in what many considered as the unofficial playoff finals. Opportunities might come available at higher tiers of junior hockey in the coming weeks, but McLellan says he isn’t
looking. “Right here,” he said when asked where he will be next September. “I have really enjoyed my time and this is a great organization to be part of. I definitely will go into next season with a better understanding of the league and the play-
ers as well.” A hint of McLellan’s commitment is the fact he is serving on the Ice Hawks coaching staff for the spring program for youngsters. He also runs the Top Shelf hockey development academy in Langley. The Ice Hawks do lose
three key regulars to graduation, including league MVP and scoring champion Liam Harding. Kye Benjaminsen and Konrad Sander have also concluded their junior hockey careers. Delta does, however, have an impressive list of potential returning players.

Junior golf tour set to tee off
Tsaw. Blues capture U-11 Red Delta Cup SUBMITTED PHOTO
The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) tees off its biggest season ever this spring break in B.C. It is Canada’s only national junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ for aspiring young players, has increased its slate of events to 62 across the country. South Delta native Murray Poje is the founder and executive director of the MJT. He’s also listed on the tour’s website as the head golf professional at Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course. The tour’s 2011 schedule of tournaments and clinics includes 14 stops in this province, the first of which is at Richmond’s Quilchena Golf Club tomorrow and Friday. Quilchena is also the host of the Canadian Junior Girls Championship later this year, making the MJT stop an ideal practice opportunity. More tour stops occur throughout the spring, summer and fall, and the full schedule can be found on the MJT website www. maplejt.com.
The Tsawwassen Blues produced their best game of the season when it mattered the most as they posted a convincing 4-1 victory over the North Delta Gunners in the U-11 Red Delta Cup final. The Gunners had a strong team of skilled players, but in the end the Blues were fortunate to have some solid finishing and strong defensive play that allowed them to capture the championship. Back row: coaches Doug Garey and Tom Porteous, Teo Ardanaz, Morgan Wolsey, Will Raderecht, Tom Garey, Henry McPhie, Michael Calvert, Ryan Vaughan-Jones and coach Mike (The Hammer) Mallard. Front row: Jake Mallard, Matthew Porteous, Gavin KwokSwan, Rowan Childs and Grayson ReidFriedman.
Dolphins compete with ‘best in the west’ The Winskill Dolphins swim club sent nine athletes to the Canada Games Pool in Kamloops for the Speedo Western Canadian Championships. One of Swimming Canada’s flagship events, the meet served as a platform for young talent to experience racing in open age categories and attracted a mixture of the country’s top senior, youth and junior swimmers. As part of the UBC Dolphins swimming associ-
ation, Winskill joined forces with Vancouver Pacific Swim Club and UBC to finish third overall. First-time Western participants included Matt Lock (14), NuNu Singh (13), Sarah Yeo (13) and Jonathan Kraft (16). Meghan Kwiatkowski (15), Kiana Beaton (15), Madison Milford (16), Brittany Mageau (15) and Sidney Peake (14) rounded out the veterans on the squad. Kraft set a new senior

club record in 50-metre freestyle with a clocking of 24.21 seconds, taking down the former benchmark held by Chris Barry (1999). Hungry for more, Kraft also snatched up Colin Jones’ old 100 free record from 2007 in 52.69 seconds. He showed poise and determination by swimming into his first “A” final. Kraft lost on the touch but set one of two club records in the process, and trimmed an impressive 20 seconds off his previous best time in 800 free. Sophomore Kwiatkowski
outdid her performances from last year’s Westerns by swimming into three “A” finals – the 50 and 100 backstroke and 50 free. Despite battling illness, Kwiatkowski rallied to demolish her previous best time in 50 free. She also set a new UBCDS association record in 4x200 free relay (8:16.72) along with her VPSC peers Samantha Corea and Caitlin Quon and Laura Sze of UBC Swimming. Other highlights include best times for Peake (50 breast and 400 IM), Beaton
(50 breast) and Singh (100 back). “It was a young and inexperienced group this year, so attending the meet was an invaluable learning experience and an important step in their development,” said Dolphins head coach Ben Keast. “[The swimmers] showed real character in their races and in the face of real fast senior-level competition,” Keast said. “Now we need to take away a thing or two and recognize we are capable of competing with the best in the West.”

HALLIBURTON, Gladys Lorine (nee McCorvie) 1922 - 2011
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother on Thursday, March 10th after a short illness. Mom was born and raised in Dauphin, Manitoba and we believe it was this good 'prairie stock' that helped carry her through the ups and downs of life with grace, fortitude, strength and love. Mom and Dad led full lives with lots of travel, friends and family. The last fifty years, off and on, here in Tsawwassen. Mom enjoyed her gardens, especially her fresh cut flowers which graced her table every week. She golfed, getting a hole in one, she curled getting an eight ender and later when bending was not as easy, bowling. Mom’s number one joy though was her family as revealed in the contents of her safe. No jewels just the homemade cards and letters given to her by her children and g r a n dc h i l d re n . S h e w a s predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Dick, survived by her three children, Ken (Brenda) of Ontario, Richard (Diana) of Delta, and Lynn (Robin) of Delta, thirteen grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Some of her last words were ' I love all my family'. We will miss you terribly Mom, be in peace with Dad.

HANCOCK, Ralph Edward ARRIVAL: Jan. 14, 1937 DEPARTURE: Mar. 13, 2011 The calm after the storm came when our beloved husband and father departed on March 13, 2011 following a lengthy illness that hindered his quality of life. Ralph is now at peace and we as a family find great comfort in that thought as he is now free to 'fly'. Predeceased by his mother Alice and brothers Jim and Claire. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Verna; daughters Gina and Carla; grandsons Austen and Jarad; sisters Thelma, Marjorie and Merle; brother in law Ron; as well as nieces nephews and many dear friends. Ralph was a well respected pilot, engineer and businessman who was a pioneer in the Aviation community since 1960. He loved the water and spent many joyous hours boating, scuba diving, ocean and fly fishing. His love of life and adventure as well as his unique sense of humour will forever be cherished and fondly remembered by all those who knew him. In true pilot form an Alternatives Event/Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday April 2nd at 2:00 pm in Ralph’s hanger at Delta Air Park 4189-104 Street in Delta. NICCOLLS, Elna C.
Elna died at Kinvillage Care Home in Delta on the evening of March 17, 2011 at the age of 92. Born in Brandon, MB on September 23, 1918, she grew up in Nesbitt and then moved to Brandon. She met my father, Frank Niccolls, a vacuum cleaner salesman and later married him on October 19, 1938. She gave birth to two sons, Barry in 1939 and Boyd in 1941. While Frank went off to serve in the war, Elna took her sons to Brandon to live with her family until her husband came home. After the war she moved her family to Regina, living in two different homes there. Eventually my Dad sold his income tax business in Regina and moved with Elna to Nanaimo where they purchased a trailer and enjoyed the Island’s good weather. Also Elna was close to the homes of her brother and two sisters. After Frank passed away in 2000, Mom soon moved to a nursing home in Delta for her final ten years. Elna was predeceased by her parents John and Margaret Brodie, brother Bud Brodie and sister Oriole Breen. She was greatly loved by sons Barry and Boyd and their children. She is survived by sisters Olive Salmond and Hazel Britton and her twin sister Eileen Harris. She will be very sadly missed. Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
