Mayor’s Summit concludes
Century Group to be given chance to come back with new proposal for Southlands BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Those who took part in last week’s Mayor’s Summit on the future of the Southlands would like to see community-based, economically viable soil-based farming operation taking place on the lands, according to Mayor Lois Jackson. The mayor’s office Saturday released an update on the summit, which took place March 24
to 26 at municipal hall, stating that CAO George Harvie will ask that the public hearing on the Southlands be terminated when it resumes on April 14. It’s all to give the property owner, the Century Group, a chance to come back with new proposal. “The participants acknowledge the important environmental and wildlife values of the lands today, and agree to look at opportunities to enhance these values,” stated Jackson’s news release.
According to the mayor, the Century Group has asked for an opportunity to bring forward a new proposal prior to July 1. The new plan would give Delta public ownership of a portion of the lands, which is greater than what has been previously proposed by the company. The company had previously pitched a development scheme to build 1,900 homes in exchange for donating 42 per cent of the 538-acre property to Delta for
agricultural urbanism. Century Group voluntarily committed to not pursue industrial agriculture on the lands in the interim, stated Jackson. Harvie is to report back to council Sept. 12, when the Century Group will have a chance to show its alternative proposal. The most controversial element of the proposed Tsawwassen Area Plan is the recommendation Delta apply to the Agricultural Land See SUMMIT page 3
Recently retired DeltaRichmond East MP John Cummins is not done with political life. Cummins announced Tuesday morning that he is entering the leadership race for the B.C. Conservative Party. He told a news conference in Vancouver that he entered the race to ensure that British Columbians “have a real John Cummins commonsense choice for the next provincial election.” “The choice between the Liberals and NDP is like a choice between airline food and hospital food,” Cummins said. “We can do better. British Columbians deserve a choice they are actually excited to vote for, not two parties they have to hold their noses to support.” After 18 years representing the area in Ottawa, Cummins announced his retirement earlier this month, along with Conservatives Stockwell Day (Okanagan-Coquihalla) and Chuck Strahl (Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon). Cummins was first elected under the Reform Party banner in 1993, capturing more than 40 per cent of the vote. It would be the start of a series of even big election victories under the Canadian Alliance and then Conservative banners. He See CUMMINS page 3

The public hearing was heading into its fourth night earlier this month when Jackson, noting it was clear there’s no consensus, announced it would be adjourned until April 14. By then, her newly formed committee would have a summit on the issue. Jackson said the message she heard more than any other was the need for further dialogue. The summit’s participant’s included Jackson, Harvie, Coun. Ian Paton, farmer Peter Guichon, Southlands the Facts spokespersons Dana Maslovat and Richard Kunz, environmentalist Anne Murray, Century Group president Sean
Hodgins, as well as Bob Ransford and Ian Robertson. Just prior to the meetings, Maslovat told the Optimist that as far as what a compromise might look like, it doesn’t have to have

believe in, and never back down on something you know is right.” In announcing his leadership bid, Cummins revealed one policy of his platform – he wants to see donations for political parties from corporations and unions will be banned in British
Columbia. “If a party cannot raise money from the voters, it has no business representing them in the legislature,” he said. The B.C. Conservative party will hold its leadership vote on May 28. The leader will be chosen by universal ballot. Individuals who’d like to vote must be a party member by May 7.

Duane Laird Green candidate vote here. Liberal candidate Dana Miller finished second with just under 22 per cent, New Democrat Szilvia Barna had 14 per cent and the Green’s Mathew Laine had just under eight per cent. In a recent interview Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said it remains to be seen if the new Conservative candidate, as well as the candidates from the other parties, will have the same appeal Cummins enjoyed on both sides of the Fraser River. Having a population of about 106,000, DeltaRichmond East came about as a result of a 2004 reconfiguration of the DeltaSouth Richmond riding.

tural research and tourism, which he hoped would provide economic benefit to the land owner, as well as increased tourism benefiting business owners and an overall benefit to the community. “Unfortunately there was not a will to seriously explore such an alternative by others at the summit. We did repeatedly emphasize our position and that majority opinion supports the ALR designation and retaining the land as agricultural. We are very disappointed by the lack of willing to consider solutions that do not involve residential development,” he said. Noting he did not support the recommendation, which came from the summit, Maslovat noted they must now look to the future. What will happen remains uncertain, he added.
The political parties in Delta-Richmond East are scrambling to get their campaigns underway for the May 2 federal election. As expected, the opposition in the House of Commons last week voted in favour of a non-confidence motion, signaling the fall of the Conservative minority government. When the popular and outspoken John Cummins recently announced he wouldn’t be running again in the next election for the Conservatives in this riding, five individuals ran in a snap nomination meeting last week. One of those candidates, Howard Jampolsky, warned Delta-Richmond East would likely be considered by the opposition as a key swing riding that can be gained now that Cummins is gone. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if the Liberals and NDP produced higher profile candidates. The Conservative membership here chose Delta school board chair Dale Saip, but his nomination was later pulled and handed over to runner-up KerryLynne Findlay, a lawyer who doesn’t live in the riding but had a number of local endorsements. Findlay ran unsuccessfully for the Alliance in Vancouver Quadra in 2001, the year she was also named by the YWCA as one of its Women of Distinction for her contributions to women in law. She’s perhaps best known for helping lead the lengthy legal battle in the 1990s against the federal government and the Musqueam Indian Band as leaseholder
opposed to the band’s plans to raise rates. Conservative riding association president Don Brooks said Monday that Findlay was still in the process of setting up her campaign office. Duane Laird, a former Delta council candidate who also previously ran for the Greens in the provincial election, was named this week as the Green candidate in Delta-Richmond East. The former president of the board at the DRS Earthwise Society, Laird has extensive experience when it comes to environmental issues. His website notes his interests include “software, bicycles, intelligent infrastructure, food security, co-ops of all sorts, sustainable business development, writing gigs, communication or education, especially environmental or arts, and green building products and practices.” Laird has also been a columnist for the Delta Optimist writing on environmental issues. As far as the Liberals, Brad Zubyk, director of communications for the party’s B.C. campaign, said two people stepped forward wanting to be the candidate here. He noted rather than having a nomination meeting, the party would make its decision by Tuesday evening. As far as what the NDP are doing, riding association president Shawkat Hasan said their candidate will be announced Wednesday. The last federal election in 2008, which resulted in another Conservative minority government, saw the incumbent Cummins once again dominate with almost 56 per cent of the

Findlay is new Tory candidate Lawyer replaces Dale Saip for Conservatives in Delta-Richmond East BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Runner up Kerry-Lynne Findlay was appointed last Friday to replace Dale Saip as the new Conservative candidate for DeltaRichmond East. The Tories dropped Saip as their candidate for the upcoming federal election last Thursday, just three days after he beat out four others in a snap nomination meeting. Saip came out on top after four rounds of preferential voting Monday. He edged out Findlay 78 to 66. The longtime school trustee quickly found himself facing controversy when his past financial woes came to light following his nomination victory.
Several residents, who were opposed to his nomination, went to the media with information on his personal financial issues, which Saip insists have been all resolved. Saying the party informed him Thursday he was out, Saip told the Optimist he fully disclosed all the required candidate background information, and it was up to the party to make a determination on his suitability before the nomination meeting. His money problems included a personal bankruptcy in 1993. In 2005, he filed for a creditor proposal under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act due to owing back taxes. Late Friday afternoon, the Conservatives appointed
Findlay, a Vancouver lawyer, as the party’s candidate for the May 2 election. Findlay herself declared bankruptcy in 2001, in part because of her extended court battle with the federal government and the Musqueam Indian Band over lease payments that non-native residents of Musqueam Park were being charged. That case wound its way all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. Menno Faroese, one of two B.C. representatives on the Conservatives’ National Council, said the selection committee spent a day questioning Findlay and examining her bankruptcy documents before deciding to appoint her. Faroese said Findlay, 55, had already started to build her election
Kerry-Lynne Findlay Conservative candidate team. Findlay explained that her bankruptcy was in part because of the costs of waging the court fight, several deaths in the family, and “someone left her a lot of debt,” Faroese said. -with files from the Vancouver Sun

The woman facing charges after the body of her newborn baby was found in the Vancouver Landfill in Ladner last year will learn her fate next month. Courtney Dawn Taylor, 22, of Surrey sobbed Friday while telling a judge she is afraid to go out in public after pleading guilty to throwing her dead baby boy into the trash. After receiving a tip, police found the baby’s body in February 2010, following a search through garbage at Burns Bog. “I had to go through the greeting and loss of a child all at once,” Taylor sobbed to Judge Jodie Werier at her sentencing hearing in B.C. Provincial Court in Richmond. “I’m afraid to go out in public. I’ve learned a lot from this.” Taylor said she has been threatened and her life has changed drastically for the
worse since the crime. Taylor is charged with disposing of the dead body of a child with intent to conceal the fact that she had given birth. Prosecutor Patti Tomasson said that, while jail would be appropriate for Taylor’s crime, she is seeking a conditional-sentence order of 18 months, followed by three years of probation with the first year spent under house arrest. Defence lawyer Chandra Corriveau is seeking a conditional discharge. She said Taylor has already been punished because of media reports and public reaction. “She has been subjected to our cultural equivalent of a public stoning,” Corriveau said. “She feels she has been portrayed as a monster and that some people feel she has disposed of a live baby,” Corriveau said. “She has been accosted in public and called a baby killer.” -with files from the Province

Earth Hour brings energy savings Enny Benny!

Delta’s consumption drops by more than two per cent during initiative jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Delta’s consumption of electricity dropped by more than two per cent during Earth Hour Saturday night. Earth Hour is an international event where turning off the lights for one hour demonstrates there is a will to take action on climate change. Scheduled to take place between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, during that time
Delta’s energy consumption dropped by 2.10 per cent. Overall, British Columbians saved 117 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.8 per cent, BC Hydro reported. That is almost twice as much as the 64 megawatt hours and 1.04 per cent saved last year, and the equivalent to turning off about 7.8 million 15-watt compact fluorescent light bulbs.
Delta was on pace with the rest of the province increasing the energy savings this year from 2.10 per cent from 1.50 the year before. “We’re delighted to see the significant increase in electricity savings over last year which we believe are a result of the increased leadership and commitment of both businesses and residences,” said Lisa Coltart, executive director of Power Smart and Customer Care.
“Think about it: if British Columbians who participated this year implemented the same conservation measures one hour every day for the whole year, the combined savings would power close to 4,000 homes for an entire year.” Delta was one of many communities in the Lower Mainland and B.C. to participate in Earth Hour. The initiative was originally held in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Speaking to a standing room only crowd last Sunday, NDP leadership hopeful Adrian Dix was in Ladner to deliver his message. He spent more than three hours meeting and greeting guests, giving his speech and taking questions from the audience. Dix outlined the top three priorities for his leadership; the economy, social justice and the environment. He spoke on how the three are linked together. “You can’t claim to have a strong economy and at the same time have the highest child poverty rate in the country,” he said. “That’s just not right.” Wearing a “Save the Southlands” button, Dix stressed the importance of not only preserving farmland but also supporting farmers so they achieve and maintain successful farming. “We are seeing imported food prices soaring, for a number of reasons, so it is more important than ever to make sure we are growing

He said
he also wants to put the teeth back in Employment Standards so injured workers are represented by advocates and avoid battling Worksafe B.C. on their own. Dix is the first leadership candidate to visit the riding. Another leadership hopeful, Mike Farnworth, made an appearance at the public hearing earlier this month. Also running for leader are John Horgan, Nichols Symons and Dana Larsen. The NDP elect their new leader on April 17.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW Something told me the ever-elusive consensus that couldn’t be found at the recent public hearing was unlikely to magically appear at the mayor’s summit. I don’t mean to knock Mayor Lois Jackson’s efforts to engage in some frank discussion when it comes to the Southlands, Tsawwassen’s longest-running saga. After ignoring the elephant in the room for the last two years, the fact municipal hall was finally willing to broach the touchy topic of Southlands development shows leadership that has been lacking in the past. Bringing all sides of the equation into those discussions was undoubtedly a fair approach to take. The problem I see, and perhaps I’m not enough of an optimist as I should be, is that summit members had disparate, and entrenched, points of view. It’s a bit like bringing Stephen Harper and Jack Layton to the table and hoping they leave seeing eye-to-eye. It doesn’t mean they couldn’t find common ground, but it did mean both were going to have to move significantly from their starting positions to get there. Members of the public representing those who would like to see the property returned to the Agricultural Land Reserve indicated they would discuss farming options but considered housing a non-starter. I certainly don’t take issue with their right to hold such an opinion, but given the property owner has proposed 1,900 units as part of a housing/ farming plan, there was a chasm going into this undertaking that looked mighty difficult to bridge. Even if Century Group president Sean Hodgins were willing to cut the number of housing units in half, which would be a significant compromise on his part, it would still be far too much for some people’s liking. That’s not to suggest those opposed to housing on the Southlands are wrong, or Hodgins is right, simply that these sides are kilometres apart. When Jackson abruptly halted the public hearing more than three weeks ago and unveiled the summit, she said it was her challenge to not allow the issue to continue to divide the community. To her credit, she brought people together to talk freely behind closed doors, but talking is a long way from agreeing. It seemed to me that as well intentioned as this summit was, it was unlikely to accomplish much more than providing a better understanding of where everyone stood. The sought after consensus among all participants wasn’t found, leaving civic politicians with the tough decision they’re not anxious to make.
Tsa. Area Plan process a waste of scarce resources DEBBIE McBRIDE
COMMUNITY COMMENT Here we go ‘round the Mulberry Bush, or so it seems to me as we hear the results of the Mayor’s Summit on the Southlands. For more than a year we were told by Delta staff, mayor and council that the long and drawn out Tsawwassen Area Planning exercise was not about development on the Southlands — period. The discussion taking place was simply about land use designation. Those who suspected the area plan process was really about development on the Southlands were very much mistaken, they said. Recent events don’t seem to bear those statements up. Let’s see what we’ve achieved over the last 12 months, besides a bill to the taxpayer that stands at over $100,000. Contentious meetings, an Ipsos
Reid survey that Delta has seemingly ignored, two bitter public hearings, both cancelled before all members of the public had the opportunity to be heard. Mayor Lois Jackson said she terminated both public hearings because there was a lack of consensus, but the Ipsos Reid survey clearly showed around 65 per cent in favour of keeping the Southlands in agriculture and little appetite for densification beyond the town center. At the time of the summit, a majority of letters received at the hall were in favour of the ALR designation. We’ve no idea the of the numbers speaking in favour of the designation since their right to be heard was once again squashed. The majority has consistently made clear their views, yet Delta seems intent on ignoring them. The Tsawwassen Area Plan is much the same as it was 20 years ago and we now see a development proposal by Century Holdings being presented in July. Gee, did I miss something here? Isn’t that the very outcome predicted by so many, yet denied by Delta, at the outset of the area planning process?

No matter where you sit on this issue, the whole process has been bungled from the start and it’s not over yet. There are all kinds of theories as to what the true agenda behind the disaster called the Tsawwassen Area Plan was but the blame for the debacle rests squarely on the shoulders of mayor, council and senior staff. They are rudderless and unable or unwilling to reign in the planning department at the hall, a department that has consistently misread the wants and needs of Tsawwassenites. It should never have reached the point where residents were so completely outraged they had to pound the podium to get their points across. The whole process has been an insult to Delta residents, who are justifiably angry and frustrated at the time and money spent on what has been a useless waste of scarce resources. Yet here we are, facing yet another failed public hearing and about to start again the approval process for development on the Southlands. Get ready for another bumpy ride folks and, come November, let’s change the car and the drivers.

Editor: If we don’t return the Southlands to the ALR our grandkids will starve! Irrigation and drainage of the Southlands will cost us millions! How dare he bully us with greenhouses! These are themes we would have our decision makers consider. If our priority is ample food production, then the B.C. Greenhouse Growers’ Association has the answer: “We can grow 10 to 20 times the amount of vegetables on the same field area...” If the cost of irrigation water is the issue, it may also have that answer: “We water and feed our plants through a computer-controlled drip irrigation system that feeds the water and nutrients directly to our plants’ roots. We recycle our water. Many of our growers collect rainwater and use it in their irrigation systems.” Greenhouses are expensive, thus we are assured he will not build them. But what if the alternative is a like amount invested in an irrigation system so one-tenth or less of greenhouse yield can be grown? If our priority is really food for our grandkids, not just a pleasing view of Mt. Baker, then our best tax dollar investment could be greenhouses. Tsawwassen taxpayers investing in Southlands greenhouses; wouldn’t that be a story to baffle the grandkids! Yet it makes far better sense than what so many now demand. Don’t worry, I suspect he is too considerate of us to build greenhouses, but this illustrates the logical consequence of superficial and uninformed argument. Let’s make sure we fully understand and weigh alternatives before a decision is made. Ed Ries

Government”? What’s nextis Parliament Hill going to be renamed “Harper House”? I, for one, am glad that we can make a change on May 2. I can’t support the Conservative agenda. Stephen Harper wants to spend $10-$30 billion (nobody knows for certain) on jet fighters when hospitals are overflowing into doughnut shops. He wants Canadians to trust him to “stay the course” on the economy when the tax cuts he has delivered have ended 11 straight years of balanced Liberal budgets and, most recently, set a new record for budget deficits at $56 billion. Lower taxes, bigger deficits. Why would anyone want to continue down this path? Harper doesn’t just have contempt for parliament; he has contempt for anyone and everyone who doesn’t see the world exactly as he sees it. Dropping Dale Saip is only the latest example of his arrogance. Maybe he will find some humility as leader of the official opposition. Derek Cockram

Editor: Given the Tories’ record, is anyone surprised by the Conservatives’ decision to drop Dale Saip as their candidate for Delta-Richmond East? Never mind that he was elected. For the Conservatives democracy only counts when it produces the results you want. What I can’t understand is why the Conservatives in this riding seem unprepared for the election. Was John Cummins’ retirement a shock? In Ottawa they have been campaigning for months now — skirting election spending laws by advertising before the writ was even dropped. When did it become acceptable for a sitting government to attack the leader of the official opposition outside of an election? Such a tactic is worthy of a third world dictator, not the Prime Minister of Canada. And on the topic of propaganda, what kind of arrogant megalomaniac changes the name of the “Government of Canada” to “the Harper

Disgusted by Tory actions in nomination process Editor: Last Monday night the Conservative party of Delta-Richmond East elected Dale Saip to carry their banner into the upcoming federal election. On Thursday the banner was lowered with the candidacy being labeled a distraction. Here was someone who had put his financial problems behind him by honouring his due and carving out a new life with his young
Editor: I’ve known Dale Saip for close to 30 years. I am not a close friend of Dale’s, but I would say we have a good relationship. Those that know him have accepted his financial problems, and his efforts to overcome them. In spite of these personal issues, Dale has become a valued citizen and a worthy contributor to our education system and the community in general. It is a shame the press chooses to focus on past financial problems that have been fully resolved with Revenue Canada, rather than on Dale’s positive value and commit-

The local Conservative party should have stood with their elected candidate, one of their own, a lad they all knew. Instead they mumbled their excuses and will no doubt wash their tarnished banner to try and hoist it again but it will lack vigour. All of us who know or worked with Dale Saip are saddened and shocked at his treatment, no longer distracted but disgusted. Janet Shauntz

family in the community he loved. Mr. Saip had spent years in public service from local business associations to serving as chair of the Delta school board. ment to the riding. Dale has a proud record of working for one of the leading sports organizations in the country and has a public service record of some 18 years with Delta’s school board. Dale did not accept his financial setback and went about solving it in the proper manner. It is a shame there is little forgiveness for those seeking a higher public office. I am one of those who choose to thank Dale for him many contributions to Delta and I hope he will continue with his public service. Doug Husband
Traffic measures needed on 2nd Avenue
Editor: My husband and I live on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 51A Avenue in Tsawwassen. There are many children, pets and seniors in our lovely neighbourhood, who along with the rest of us, love to be out and about walking, biking, skate boarding, etc. I am truly frightened for the safety of everyone who travels down 2nd Avenue from English Bluff all the way down past Pebble Hill School — whichever direction they are heading. There is no stop sign whatsoever the entire length of this stretch and vehicles roar down the blocks, speeding the entire way. Many of these vehicles
are local residents. I don’t know how many times I have whipped my head around to see who is driving the vehicle flying down our street when I’ve been out gardening, walking my dog or playing with my grandchildren. The entire stretch of road is an accident waiting to happen. I am amazed no one has been seriously hurt yet. This stretch of road is far too long to not have a stop sign, speed bumps or some form of traffic device to slow vehicles down. I implore Delta to at least do a trial of implementing a speed deterrent device along this stretch before something tragic happens. Jo and Rob Bellefontaine

Brown bags are calling
The Faces of Fre- Joy of London
Spring cleaning means working outside as well
LIVING MATTERS It’s spring. The ball fields are full. The playgrounds are packed. And the brown bags are calling my name. You know the ones. They’re big. They’re sturdy. And they speak to physical labour. They’re calling me — the stupid things — to remind me that spring cleaning is not something that ought be focused only on a home’s interior. Spring cleaning, they want me to know, should also extend to the exterior of a home, and specifically, to the winter junk that covers, well, pretty much the whole of the property. This year, I figure, the winter junk — pine needles, fir boughs, crunchy leaves and who knows what else — amounts to some 35 pounds, give or take a dozen. That, I am estimating, translates to about 20 of the blasted brown bags. And 20 of the blasted brown bags equates to some 47 hours of yard work.
They’re calling me — the stupid things — to remind me that spring cleaning is not something that ought be focused only on a home’s interior. “The brown bags,” I said. “They’re calling us.” My husband nodded. He had been at this juncture before. Last year at this time. And the year before at this time. And so on. “Oh,” he said. “That’s a drag. I hate that.” “Me too,” I said. “And this year, they’re being really, really nasty. They’ve even been calling me names.” “No,” said the husband.
“Like what?” “Oh, you know. Things like ‘loser’. And ‘lazy bones.’ And ‘couch potato.’” The husband shook his head in disgust. “That is just plain unacceptable,” he observed The brown bags, I suggested, were becoming rather testy because other neighbours on the block — like all of them — had already answered the call and dealt with their winter junk. The other neighbours have not only had the interior spring cleaning tackled; they have also opened their 20 brown bags, filled their 20 brown bags, and placed their 20 brown bags at the curb. While we’ve been ignoring the brown bags’ call, the neighbours have been doing other things. Like walking, say. “Well,” said the husband. “Should I get the rakes? And the gardening gloves? And the bags?” “I suppose,” I said. “They’re not going to shut up any time soon.” And with that, we did what we do at this time every year. We dealt with the refuse of winter. Then we marched straight ahead into spring.

More or less. Spring, I like. Brown bags, not so much. “Hey,” my husband said the other day, squinting, and looking very much like a bear that had just emerged from hibernation. “It’s kind of nice out there. We should go for a walk.” “You haven’t heard them?” I asked. “Heard who?” he wondered.

Jazzercise for hospice Exercise class on April 10 serving as fundraiser
You will benefit from the exercise and will be supporting the Delta Hospice Society at the same time.” Pam Stevenson
“Movement is life,” says Jazzercise instructor Pam Stevenson. “We invite you to come out and try this class. You will benefit from the exercise and will be supporting the Delta Hospice Society at the same time.” Jazzercise is a dancebased group fitness program that offers a fun and effective total body workout. Each class features a
fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, and Latin-style movements set to popular music. “This fundraiser is a great idea,” says hospice society executive director Nancy Macey. “Jazzercise is growing in popularity; many people I know seem to be trying it out. It is wonderful that this thoughtful group of women are using a Jazzercise class to raise awareness and to fundraise for Delta Hospice.” “We want to keep people moving and have fun at the same time,” says Stevenson. “We are really trying to make this a ‘community’ event and encourage anyone to come and bring a friend as well.” To add to the fun, Stevenson has organized a burger and beverage fundraiser after the morning class at the Ladner Legion from 12:30 to 3 p.m. This event is for those wishing to participate further in the day’s events or just take part in the burger and beverage portion alone for a good
cause. Tickets are $15 and again all proceeds will be donated to the Delta Hospice Society. The community is encouraged to arrive early for this class on the morning of April 10 at 10 a.m. to participate. No advanced registration is required.
“It is wonderful that this thoughtful group of women are using a Jazzercise class to raise awareness and to fundraise for Delta Hospice.”

Those included speeches by prominent women of aviation, museum programs highlighting the contribution of women to aviation throughout history and invitations to visit local airports. Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week aims to raise awareness of opportunities available to women in the aviation industry. The 2012 Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week will be held from March 5 to 11. Goyer organized an international event last year to commemorate the centennial of licensed female pilots. For more information visit www.womenofaviationweek.org or contact Goyer at mireilleg@womenofaviationweek.org.

Happy couples choose friends and family members to serve as attendants in their weddings. Bridesmaids and groomsmen each have different responsibilities in the wedding. In ancient times, groomsmen essentially served as the groom’s bodyguards, ensuring that he made it safely to the altar and to his future wife. Today, the groomsmen’s roles are not based on saving life and limb. Today’s groomsmen serve as assistants to the groom and help plan the bachelor party. They also usher guests down the aisle at the ceremony. They also may have a few other responsibilities, depending on what the couple wants of their assistants.

will be wearing. One way to do so is with a similarcoloured tie, vest or cummerbund. Take a colour swatch of one of the bridesmaids’ gowns with you to the tuxedo store for assistance with matching the look. Pick up the tuxedo a day or two before the wedding and try on every piece, including the shoes, to check for fit. This way you have time for an exchange if something is not right or to pick up a missing tie or cuff link, which is apt to happen. Rented tuxedoes usually need to be returned the day after the wedding or the next business day. Elect a member of the wedding party to handle tuxedo returns because you’re likely to be on your honeymoon at this point.

the front. It is worn with a mandarin-style shirt without a tie. Long coat: The long coat is best worn by tall, broadshouldered men and is traditional in colder weather. The coat extends beyond the fingertips of the wearer. Dinner jacket: This is a variation on the regular tuxedo jacket, but it is usually ivory or white in color. This can set the groom apart from other members of the wedding party. Many grooms-to-be opt to rent their tuxedo instead of purchasing one. Wedding experts recommend renting the attire three months before the wedding. All groomsmen should rent their tuxedos from the same shop for a uniform look. It is also customary to co-ordinate the tuxedos with the gowns bridesmaids

look sophisticated. A tuxedo shop representative can help you to find a tuxedo that fits well. These garments are available in a number of sizes, but a reputable shop will make minor alterations to ensure a perfect fit. You want to be sure there is no pulling in the jacket and that the pants are a good length. As well, shirt sleeve length is important (the cuffs should extend past the jacket a little bit). The fit of the shirt collar is also important. You want to be comfortable the entire duration of your wedding. Tuxedo jackets come in many styles, with the basics being single- or double-breasted. Doublebreasted jackets may add a little bulk, which should be avoided by heavy men or those who are very slim. Jackets also come in different lengths. Choose one that is proportionate to your height so your body does not look overwhelmed by the jacket. Here are a few of the styles: Cutaway jacket: This jacket is shorter in the front and tapers to one longer tail in the back. It is traditionally a formal daytime jacket. Traditional tuxedo jacket: As mentioned, this can be single- or doublebreasted and feature varied numbers of button closures. The lapels may also be varied. A peaked lapel forms a “V” at the collar and points upward. A notched lapel has an indentation at the collar in the shape of a triangle. A shawl lapel has no indentation and smoothly curves around the neck. Mandarin jacket: Mandarin-style jackets do not have a lapel but a collar that stands straight up. There are six buttons along

There are many groomsto-be who leave choosing their wedding day attire to the last minute. After all, it’s something that doesn’t require much thought at all, right? Actually, choosing your attire requires careful consideration of several variables. As such, many men are intimidated by the process, another reason for procrastination. However, acquiring a few pointers will help make the process easier if you have limited experience with wedding-day attire. It’s first important to consider the style of your wedding. What time is it being held? What is the size of the wedding party and the number of attendants? Will it be held in a church with a reception at a fancy catering hall, or is it a more laid-back affair at a park or on the beach? All these questions will help determine the formality of the event. Your wardrobe choices should coincide with this level of formality. Tuxedos are often the attire of choice for weddings that are moderately or ultra formal. A tuxedo with a bow tie and tails is a very formal look. For the majority of weddings a tuxedo without tails, with a matching vest and regular tie, will be adequate for the groom and groomsmen. On some occasions, especially casual weddings, grooms choose to wear a sports jacket and slacks rather than a tuxedo. Tuxedoes are flattering for most men, especially when a black tuxedo is chosen. Black is slimming, and simply slipping into a tuxedo can enable anyone to

Wedding wine need not be expensive
for your
Perfect Day!
Wines are a fixture at nearly all weddings. They are used to toast the marriage of the new husband and wife. Some caterers let you bring your own wines, while others serve a house wine or provide the wine as part of your package. Your wine selection should depend on various factors, such as the number of guests, the menu and service style, the time and length of the reception, and your budget. You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on wine. For whites, Chardonnay is a drinkable wine that agrees with most palettes. For reds, a basic Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon will fit the bill. That $15 bottle of wine is likely just as good as the $100 bottle. The purpose of the event is to celebrate your marriage. Guests are usually happy to toast with any wine. When deciding how much to purchase, remember that it’s better to have too much than not enough. The average wine bottle

A survey of local employers reveals that 23 per cent plan to hire for the upcoming quarter (April to June), while 10 per cent anticipate cutbacks, said Susan Wright-Boucher, regional director of Manpower’s pacific region. “Richmond-Delta’s second quarter net employment outlook of 13 per cent is the same as the outlook reported for the previous quarter,” she said. “However it is a three percentage point increase from the outlook reported during the same time last year, indicating a positive hiring climate.”

With spring officially kicking in, employees at one local company are going to be able to spend a little more time outside on the job than most. Recently, Organic Gardening magazine featured an article written by the CEO and co-founder of Nature’s Path, Arran Stephens, about the importance of combining work with one of the “healthiest exercises known,” according to him: gardening. Nature’s Path, whose headquarters are located in Richmond, built a garden on company property six years ago so that all of its staff could really understand the relationship between good food and healthy soil by getting the chance to play in the dirt. Once the 2,400 square foot garden including a specially built three-compartment compost bin was completely set up, it was
all put in the hands of the approximate hundred employees working at the office. Every department, from sales and marketing to technical services, was given the responsibility for its own gardening bed. But not only is the garden a benefit for staff in the sense that it allows them to “breathe fresh air and move to the rhythms of gardening,” Stephens said, all employees are also given the chance to take any fresh produce home with them. Nature’s Path also has two other plants in the US, which are following in the footsteps of what has been done in Richmond. Tips on starting a community garden in your own workplace include: begin small and establish a convenient garden site, have an experience gardener spearhead the program, get organized (and determine your resources), and make it fun. Water Service Connection to Tsawwassen First Nation
April 4 to April 12, 2011
From April 4 to April 12, 2011, Metro Vancouver crews will be working on connecting an existing water main on 52nd Street at 28th Avenue to the Tsawwassen First Nation Lands.
SUBMITTED PHOTO
John Thomas (middle), along with Mark Friesen and Rick Lewall, recently toured the new Delta Sports Development Centre. within the complex. “It’s apparent that a lot of thought and careful planning has been given to the many activities this project is designed to facilitate,” said Thomas. “I expect that this centre for athletic development will serve the recreational pursuits of many thousands of people, young and old, for decades to come. My family is pleased to assist in, at least a small way, with the cost of creating this beautiful complex for the benefit of people in the South Fraser region.” The Delta Gymnastics
Society, with its “Where Kids Are First” motto, has a 35-year history in the community. Programs are offered to all ages, from pre-school tumbling to competitive gymnastics to sport development training for local athletic teams. As the new facility is double in size from the one in Tsawwassen, there is an immediate need to purchase new equipment. For information on how to donate call 604-9430460, e-mail info@deltagymnastics.com or check out a video at http://kids1stcampaign.blogspot.com.
To accommodate this work, Metro Vancouver and the Corporation of Delta will be reconfiguring the flow of water in existing mains. These changes may result in flow and pressure fluctuations within Delta’s distribution system and may cause temporary discolouration and/or cloudiness in the water. Residents may experience temporary episodes of turbidity (cloudiness) of water during this time. These changes may be noticeable near the B.C. Ferries, Tsawwassen First Nation Lands, Imperial Village and areas along 52nd Street between Highway 17 and 12th Avenue. Cloudy water episodes of this type usually occur for a short period of time and the clarity of the water should return to normal within a short period of normal household water use. Monitoring of water quality will continue and the water remains safe to drink. Further notification will be provided should the situation change. In order to avoid potentially cloudy water for drinking, you may wish to refrigerate drinking water ahead of time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this project. For more information on water supply or water quality, please contact: Metro Vancouver Information Centre at 604-432-6200 Metro Vancouver Water Quality Information Line at 604-451-6010

The Thomas family has brought the Delta Gymnastics Society’s fundraising campaign for its new home at the Delta Sports Development Centre in Ladner closer to its goal of $850,000. The $50,000 gift brings the campaign total to $560,000. The office in the new facility, which is scheduled to open next month, will be named for the family’s patriarch, W. Stan Thomas. As founder of Delta Cable Communications, Stan Thomas was an active supporter of Delta Gymnastics and, through the family-owned company, made significant contributions to the fundraising campaign for the present gym at the South Delta Recreation Centre. Stan’s son, John, recently toured the building adjacent to the Ladner Leisure Centre and was impressed with the flexibility to accommodate multiple disciplines simultaneously

This newest location is in a converted house which helps to provide the small dogs with a home-away-from-home play place. With 1200 sq ft indoors and 1600 sq ft outdoors there is plenty of space to run around. Both of our locations are fully supervised with staff that is trained in dog behaviour and body language and there is always someone with Certified Pet FirstAid on duty. Located just off the Rattu and Giselle Westminster Hwy exit from Hwy 99 we are a conveniently located daycare for dogs big and small that cares about your best friend as much as you do. We provide our customers with feedback regarding their dog’s day and we treat each dog as an individual, respecting their needs and trying to provide them with the best day ever! 01261822

Royals poised to earn promotion to 1st Div
Tsawwassen Royals are wellpositioned to earn promotion to the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s First Division for the 2011-12 season. The Royals captured the VMSL Division 2C title thanks to a dramatic 4-3 overtime win against the Green Devils in a first place tiebreaker game. The result put Tsawwassen in a three-team playoff — with Sarajevo and UBC Metropolitan — to determine which two sides would earn promotion. Coming off a 5-0 loss to Sarajevo one week earlier in cup play, the Royals bounced back with a huge effort last Wednesday, earning a 1-1 draw. The Vancouver side, which did manage to win a penalty kick tiebreaker, needed a goal in the 82nd minute to equalize. The locals continued their First Division quest on Sunday, under the lights at the Winskill turf, against UBC. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw and this time Tsawwassen won the penalty kick tiebreaker. The Division 2 playoffs conclude Friday at Thunderbird Stadium with Sarajevo meeting UBC Metropolitan. The only way Tsawwassen doesn’t advance is if the teams play to a high-scoring draw.
“An outright win for either team or a scoreless game would do it for us,” said Royals coach Jim Norris. “The boys came up with a big effort against Sarajevo and were full value for the result.” The earlier win over the Green Devils saw Tsawwassen twice squander a two-goal lead and need extra time to clinch the division title. Fielding their strong starting 11 of the season, the Royals were full value for a 2-0 lead at the interval. Mike Easingwood and Mitch Norris combined to convert a blistering corner kick from Zac Dabrowski to open the scoring. Poul Dempster then deposited a Skafti Sinclair cross. The locals missed a number of chances to pad their lead and that opened the door for the Devils to get on the scoreboard. Sinclair then made it 3-1 when the momentum of his cross carried the Devils’ goalkeeper across the line. The Vancouver squad turned up the heat late in regulation, scoring twice in the final five minutes to send the game to extra time. The Royals regrouped at the break and produced the game winner in the second 15-minute session when substitute Dan Gurniak broke down the right wing and sent a low ball into penalty area. An oncoming Manu smashed it home.

an easy 10-4 victory over Fraser Valley East in Aldergrove. All South Delta players factored in the scoring, while Adam Enns earned game MVP honours. It was a much sterner test the next evening in Maple Ridge as the West squad faced Fraser Valley North. The game was tied at 3-3 after two periods and the West finally took control with five unanswered goals in the third in a 8-3 win. This time, Marentette earned game MVP honours. and the game was tied at 4-4 heading into the third period. The West took the lead with eight minutes remaining and needed a breakaway stop from Aldergrove goaltender Gerad Maxwell to seal a 5-4 win. An excited group of players had concluded their season by winning their final tournament of the season — a fitting way to cap their minor hockey careers. Adam Enns was awarded the Fraser Valley West scholarship. Coach Enns congratulated his players for a remarkable tournament and display of fair play and sportsmanship. No penalties were accessed to a South Delta player in any of the three tournament games.

South Delta Minor Hockey made quite an impression at the inaugural Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association Fraser Valley Midget “C” Scholarship Tournament. The tournament was introduced to showcase midget “C’ hockey and offer one $500 scholarship per team at the event’s conclusion. Coaches of each association were asked to submit names of graduating players to attend tryouts. In order to be eligible, players had to demonstrate sportsmanship throughout the season, including limited penalty minutes with no match penalties or game misconducts. Nineteen South Delta players

South Delta Shock celebrate their PCAHA Fraser Valley West Pee Wee C regular season and playoff championships. The local squad defeated Langley earlier this month to win the tier one title.
Pee Wee Shock cap impressive season by capturing FV West playoff banner The South Delta Peewee Shock capped a successful season by winning the Fraser Valley Tier 1 playoff championship with a 6-1 victory over the Langley Thunderhawks. The Shock entered the game needing two points in the round-robin format playoff series to secure the title, having gone 3-1 in their first four playoff games. The two teams played earlier in the year, with the Shock prevailing 4-3 en route to winning the Aldergrove Winter Peewee Tournament. Midway through the first period, the Shocked opened the scoring when Spencer Richardson swatted home a rebound after a shot from Marc Ashford. The Shock almost made it 2-0 seconds later when defenseman Brayden Kirk rushed up ice and, with only the goalie to beat, rang a low shot off the right post. Kirk had scored the game winner in the Shock’s last playoff game. South Delta successfully killed two penalties near the end of the first period, relying on solid defensive zone play from a strong defensive corps including Kyle Saunders, Nicholas Scott and Seth Ogilvie. The Shock were stingy all year, giving up an average of just 2.68 goals per game and killing 89 percent of the penalties they incurred. The Shock sandwiched a second goal between the two penalty kills and Richardson netted a third tally just five minutes into the second period. With regular goalie, Kris Hothi, unavailable for action, the team relied on Atom call-up Connor Sillett to be the last line of defense. He had earned his first Pee Wee division win a week earlier against
Cloverdale. Sillett found himself alone with one of the Thunderhawk’s strongest skaters coming in on a clear breakaway. He read the deke and thrust out his right pad to stop the puck, which he smothered for a face-off. While there were only three goals in the first 27 minutes of the game, the next three came in under 90 seconds. Defenseman Logan Newman notched his 31st of the season on a picture-perfect passing play with left winger Kyle Ainge. The home team made it 5-0 on a nice setup by Ashford. With the puck behind the net, he found Adam Chan in the low slot. Chan buried a hard shot to the glove side. Just when it seemed that the rout was on, the Thunderhawks got on the scoreboard when they banged in a loose puck. While that play may have temporarily given the visitors some life, the Shock’s smothering defensive play prevented any further damage. Wingers Jared Garcha, Liam Peake, and Brad Gretsinger helped kill the Langley. Centre Aiden Lauinger further limited any threats by winning faceoffs and controlling the puck at key moments. With less than two minutes remaining, Richardson capped the scoring with his fourth goal of the game on a fine individual rush. Sillett earned an assist on the power play tally. The Shock, who are led by head coach Andrew Richardson and assistants Brian Newman and Paul Kirk, finished the season with a 24-6-1 overall record, including an 8-1-1 record for the regular season championship in their tier.
