Moving your home doesn’t have to be painful Experts created after dozens of personal moves offer their tips for moving efficiently and decluttering IRENE SEIBERLING POSTMEDIA NEWS

Moving experts? You bet! Four Saskatchewan women got so good at moving themselves — almost 50 times between them — they decided to start a business that shares their moving expertise. The Transitions Estate Services team — Linda Ennis, Marna Allan, Bonnie Pollock and Sharon Kosior — handles everything from estate dispersal to downsizing and de-cluttering. “I’ve helped many girlfriends with downsizing and de-cluttering. That’s something that comes easy for me,” Ennis said. And Pollock came up with the idea of helping seniors after moving her parents into a nursing home about a year ago. “I’m an only child. They live 70 miles from here. It was quite an experience,” Pollock said. She had to take a leave-of-absence from her nursing position. “There was no place to go for help, except to friends,” said Pollock. “I couldn’t find any help, and I’m sure there are other people like me, as well. “People live all over the country now. It’s very time consuming. And it’s very expensive for families to take time off of work and to come home many times — because you can’t just do it in one day or one weekend. It takes a lot of time and effort. “That’s where a company like ours comes in. If I could have had that to help me, I would have given anything.” Transitions Estate Services was started in the spring of 2010, when the four longtime friends decided to pool their wealth of knowledge and experience. “It was a progression,” Pollock said. “We didn’t rush into anything. We talked it over with each other, did our research, and decided, ‘Why not give this a try?’ ” The group used a Calgary company that offers a similar service as a model. Before providing a written assessment for estate dispersal, the Transition team instructs families to remove any personal

objects they want to keep. The team then calculates how much time and labour will be needed to liquidate the estate. Because its both time and labour intensive, it costs a minimum of $2,000 to liquidate an estate. That can include everything from packing and unpacking items being moved to a condo or nursing home, to advertising and holding an estate sale, to delivering unsold items to a charity of choice. “The house when we’re done is broom cleaned and ready for the realtors to come in,” Pollock said. When required, the team will set up the client’s things in their new residence, which can even include hanging pictures. “It’s evolving,” Ennis said. “Some of these people have

nobody. They’re quite elderly and they need help.” “It turns out to be fairly involved at times,” Pollock said. Liquidating an estate can be emotionally stressful and timeconsuming, Ennis said. It can take three to four weeks. It’s important to be compassionate and respect the client’s needs, Pollock and Ennis stressed. “It can be traumatic for them. We don’t want to rush them,” Ennis said. Eventually, the Transition team hopes to work full-time providing estate dispersal, downsizing and de-cluttering services. But for now, it’s a sideline. Ennis is currently a marketing executive; Pollock is a nurse; Allan is a teacher; and, Kosior is a retired financial planner. The Transition team provides

downsizing services for those who don’t have the time, manpower or ability to manage such a project themselves. “They’re moving in some cases from four-level splits into 800 square feet,” Pollock said. The downsizing process begins with a consultation to determine which items are to be kept and which will be sold. Items to be sold are cleaned, organized and priced (by professional appraisers) and displayed on site for sale. The Transition team will supply everything from display tables and tablecloths to wrapping paper and bags. They’ll handle advertising and running the sale, which includes keeping an itemized sales list. When de-cluttering, the company will sort the client’s belong-

ings, remove the garbage, clean items to be sold, plus organize and sort the items that are being kept. “Our goal isn’t just to move and pack and box up stuff,” Pollock said. “We would like to make that transition as easy as possible for these people. “Sometimes it just takes a lot of talking with them and some empathy. Sometimes it takes taking someone out for a cup of coffee halfway through the move because they’ve had enough. “It’s hard for people. They have an emotional attachment to their stuff — which we don’t have. Mother found way for her child to help her SHARI KULHA POSTMEDIA NEWS

Making cookies is a rite of childhood, at least the mixing of batter and licking of spoon. But as most moms will attest, there’s always stress attached to the event, what with child barely a metre tall and the counter top out of reach. What to do with her, sit her on the counter? Position a kitchen chair so its backrest protects her from stepping off one edge, and shield the other with your body? That’s hard on Mom’s arms and back. The process is inevitably fraught with some tidbit of angst. What happens when the last ingredient is just out of your reach? Do you haul the wee one down off the chair each time you need to move a few inches away? Ana White, a DIY, at-home mom, came up with a smart solution for her little girl. Mom says her daughter always wants to help, be it laundry, cooking, baking or building.

So she came up with a “security fence” that stands tall enough for the child to reach the counter, but guards against falls and tipping (there are crossbars for the tower feet that aren’t shown in the photo below). The platform is adjustable to match the child’s height and task under way. Knowing that most of us don’t have the space in our kitchens to have the tower standing at the ready 24/7, she’s also created a foldaway model. White designs and draws up all manner of household furniture that can be made with a sheet of wood, and provides dimensions, materials list and instructions for free at ana-white.com (search “Helping Tower”). In this case, her plan of attack was to create a stand that was easy to build, lightweight, easily adjustable, tip resistant, inexpensive and wouldn’t require much in the way of materials (it comes in at about $20 plus paint). Even contracted out, this could be worth every penny. Now, would you prefer your cookie to be chocolate chip or oatmeal, batter or baked?

Hi Reena, I am getting married in less than a month and when I recently went in for my first dress fitting, I noticed a really odd smell coming from the dress! The seamstress thinks it is probably the smell of the factory where it was made (in China). It stinks! I don’t want people to think I smell bad on my wedding day! It has been steamed but still smells. Any ideas? It is made from crinoline and has silk material flowers all over. Time is running out and I’m not sure what to do. — Susan Hi Susan, The chemical treatment that you are most likely experiencing is required for all garment and fabric importers from any foreign country. This treatment is used to keep unwanted insects from being accidentally transported with wedding gowns. Here are a few suggestions: Hang the dress in the garage or another protected, ventilated area. Or make a solution of one part liquid fabric softener and four parts water, and mist the dress. Or wrap the dress in plastic and add a generous amount of lavender to bring freshness to the dress. If the smell is overpowering, bring the dress to a dry cleaner that specializes in wedding dresses and have the dress professionally dry-cleaned. Congratulations on your wedding! ◆◆◆

Hello Reena, I have a wooden picture frame that was dropped and I repaired the crack

where it came apart with a glue gun. It is dry and has excess glue showing on the front of the frame. What can I do to remove the excess glue? — Rosemarie Dear Rosemarie, The easiest method to remove glue-gun glue is to hold a hot hair dryer over the area to soften the glue. Next, gently scrape away all excess glue. If the glue is still noticeable, dab it with denatured alcohol and wipe. ◆◆◆

Hi Reena, My niece and husband just returned from a trip to the southern Mexico, and because it was so damp there at the time, their suitcases came back so strong with mould, they can’t use them again. They have left them out in the cold fresh air, but to no avail. Do you know how they can get rid of the odour? — Barb Dear Barb, If the suitcase is cloth on the inside, hand wash it with heavy-duty laundry detergent and rinse. If the suitcase is hard plastic on the inside, scrub the interior with dish soap, water and tea tree oil to zap the smell. Dry with a fan or hair dryer so the suitcase dries quickly. Store fabric softener sheets inside the suitcase until the travellers leave once again. Or pack the suitcase with oodles of crumpled-up newspaper. Close the suitcase and leave until use. ◆◆◆

Hello Reena, I have a new Dutch oven that I used once for Italian meatball stew, and, after removing the contents, I was left with a thick, black, burnt stain on the

bottom of the pot. It has been impossible to remove so far. What do you suggest I do? — Michelle Hi Michelle, Although I don’t know what the Dutch oven is made of, I will assume that it is stainless steel. Soak the pan with dishwasher detergent and hot water, then scrub with a steel wool pad. Or (and this is what I like to do) pour into the pot baking soda, dish soap and enough water to cover the bottom. Boil the contents for five minutes. Let sit just until cool enough to handle and scrub with an S.O.S pad.

You’ve heard about the health benefits of using an infrared sauna — pain relief, detoxification, weight loss, not to mention muscle relaxation — but buying one and installing it in your home could be far from tranquil if you don’t ask the right questions. According to the experts, it’s not as simple as going to the store, bringing it home and plugging it in. There are a few things to consider before investing in a home sauna. We spoke to Patty Fraser, who owns Chinook Hot Tubs and Saunas in Ottawa with her husband Robert Chubb, and some of her answers may surprise you.

What’s the difference between traditional and infrared saunas, and which one is best for you? Fraser says one in five customers choose an infrared sauna over the conventional version, but says that is slowly changing. She says the main difference is traditional saunas heat the air, whereas the infrared emitters heat the body. If someone suffers from a breathing disorder, she recommends an infrared, which is typically heated to 48 C to 65 C, compared to a traditional sauna, which runs as high as 90 C. “In a conventional sauna, it gets hot right away,” she says. “You get that blast of heat and you start sweating right away. An infrared sauna does not feel like that. It’s not hot at all. You go in and about 10 minutes later, you start to sweat.” But she stresses hey both provide the same wellness benefits.

What size do you need? Units range from about one-metre square, which typically accommodates one to two people, to 1.5metres square, which can sit five to six people. They come in hemlock or cedar with either ceramic or carbon heaters. “You will need to decide how many people will be using the sauna at one time,” says Fraser, adding it’s important to “think about how much space you are willing to give up. You need to know accurately your dimensions so you know what size of unit can fit in your area.” Do you have enough power to run the sauna? Some smaller infrared saunas can plug into any outlet, so that eliminates the need for new wiring. However, Fraser says medium and large units require a 15-or 20-amp plug, which must be installed by an electrician. “If somebody only has 15 amps, you can only take up to a 1400-watt infrared (sauna). Anything 16 or over, you need to have a 20-amp breaker.” How many emitters should a sauna have? The more emitters surrounding a sauna, the more

coverage the body gets. Fraser says this is because the wavelength coming from the emitter only heats what is directly in front of it. “If you only have two emitters at your back, then your sides and your front are not going to get as hot. So you need to have the emitters spaced around your unit.” Ask how many emitters are in the unit you want to buy. Fraser warns that less than six, in even the smallest unit, would not be effective. What about the warranty? Saunas typically cost between $1,000 and $5,000 (assembly not included) so make sure you are covered if something breaks. Fraser says most manufacturers offer a one-year warranty on the electrical components. However, the biggest problem consumers face is when they buy a unit made in China, and the company that sold it to them does not back the warranty. “We have various infrared saunas, some are manufactured in China and some are manufactured in Canada. The company that imports them backs the warranty, so we don’t have to go to China to get a part. We also back our supplier’s warranty.”

I’m wondering if a soap and water spray would get rid of them, or perhaps you might have a more effective solution. The problem sounds like fungus gnats. The good news is fungus gnats seldom cause much damage to plants. It is the larva that does the feeding and it concentrates on feeding on fungi and organic matter in the soil. It is only when their numbers get high enough that they may feed on the root hairs. If this happens you will notice a reduced vigour in the plant itself. You can try the soap and water spray, but I never have had much success using that. The key to controlling these annoying little things is to spray

You will find that as the next growing season progresses the plants will actually grow even faster now that you have begun pruning them. Many times, pruning will stimulate growth.
