The fire that gutted a venerable Fort Langley business Tuesday morning was likely started during an attempted break-in, police say. Windows on the building’s

north side were broken, and someone had cut through metal bars trying to get into the store, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. The attempt to cut through the bars may have actually started the fire, Marks said.

Police are holding back details about how the bars were cut while the investigation continues. The IGA Marketplace at Glover Road and Mavis Avenue caught fire sometime around 5:30 a.m. A passing Langley Township worker salting the roads was the first

to call 911 after seeing smoke. “At first it was billowing smoke,” said Diane Morrison, the owner of Wendel’s Bookstore and Cafe. From the shop, directly across Glover from the IGA, she watched as the first firefighters arrived and entered the building. Not long after, the fire really began to get going.

A steady spray of rain misted on firefighters, paramedics, and police officers as they honoured Ron Dunkley Tuesday afternoon. Langley saw property values rise at a measured pace compared to its neighbours in the western parts of Metro Vancouver. According to the B.C. Assessment Authority’s website, property values rose by 6.69 per cent in Langley City, and 6.55 per cent in the Township. That’s far from the peaks reached in Vancouver and its immediate neighbours. Richmond showed the highest increases, with average values jumping 17.14 per cent. Residential market values increased 13.03 per cent in West Vancouver, 12.17 per cent in Vancouver, 12.07 per cent in Burnaby, 9.22 per cent in Delta, 9.11 per cent in New Westminster, 8.84 per cent in North Vancouver District, and 7.58 per cent in Surrey. Langley is more in line with areas such as Abbotsford – which saw a 6.5 per cent increase – and points east. Smaller valley communities like Chilliwack and Agassiz saw much more modest assessment increases than Richmond or West Van. Many people assume a higher assessment means higher taxes, but that is not necessarily the case. The average assessment rate is taken into account when the Township and City levy property taxes. However, if a home’s rate has risen faster than the average rate, it may mean an extra bite on the tax bill. Mayor Rick Green pointed out that the Township is composed of at least six distinct communities, and that property values in Willoughby, Fort Langley, Murrayville and Brookswood are unlikely to rise or fall at the same rate. Green said he’s seen cases where one old home being replaced by a new mansion can drive up assessed values for all its neighbours, and thus taxes. The property tax debates are about to begin in the Township. The council has suggested an increase of 3.9 per cent for this year. Open houses on the budget will be held at the Township hall on Jan. 17 from 3 to 6:30 p.m., and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Jan. 18.

Landmark reduced to rubble as owners, patrons watch “There was at least twoto three-storey-high flames,” Morrison said. She could feel the heat of the fire through the windows of her store. “It literally burnt to the ground right in front of our eyes,” she said. Firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze, using hoses from the ground and from atop ladders perched above the roof. Even by daylight, as Langley Township firefighters poured water on the blaze, massive clouds of grey smoke continued to rise from the building. The IGA sign from the front of the building was lying on the sidewalk in front of Glover Road. Glover itself was closed between Mavis and 96th Avenue. Nearby buildings seem to have largely been undamaged, although some residents living nearby were evacuated. Most shops on Glover within a block of the fire were closed at least temporarily while the road was blocked off. Wendel’s was only open to serve breakfast and coffee to the firefighters as they wound down their firefighting, Morrison said.

The IGA stands on a site that has served Fort Langley as a general store or grocery store for more than a century, according to Kobi Christian, a curator at the Fort Langley Centennial Museum. The first store recorded on the site was Coulter and Berry’s General Store, built in 1898. It also served as the post office under owner David Moss Coulter. The original building burned to the ground in the late 1920s, but was rebuilt. The store went through a few owners and name changes, before becoming the IGA in the 1970s. It is family owned and operated. Police investigating the blaze are now asking the public if they saw anything suspicious around the store. Anyone with information can call the Langley RCMP at 604532-3200, or to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Laws add safety There are still a few out there who continue to disregard the law, their own safety, and their responsibility to others. But for the most part, the year-old law aimed at curbing the dangerous actions of compulsive talkers and texters among us has taken hold. It was a year ago this week that it became time to put down the cellphones and Blackberrys while driving – at least for those who weren’t intelligent enough to have already done so. The province started 2010 with a ban on the use of all hand-held cellphones and portable devices used for games or texting while driving. Hands-free technology is still allowed – though rational voices immediately began calling for an extension to the ban, to include them. Studies have shown handsfree devices are actually just as dangerous as hand-held phones, because they pull our attention away from our driving And that is the real culprit in statistics that show using a cellphone while behind the wheel of a car put you at equal risk of having an accident as driving while drunk. Speaking of which, the provincial government is to be applauded for two further measures it took in 2010 to help make roads a bit safer. Lowering the provincial impairment limit below the federal level – to .05 per cent blood-alcohol from .08 per cent – is an acknowledgment that the legal limit specified in the Criminal Code of Canada is not severe enough. You don’t have to be falling-down drunk to be a deadly hazard to fellow motorists. And for those who choose speed, instead of alcohol, as their weapon of choice, the province has made it more painful for drivers who get caught speeding by more than 40 km/h over the speed limit. All in all, that amounts to a pretty strong year in favour of road safety. Not every new law deserves hearty applause, but this suite of 2010 traffic laws are worth a hardy pat on the back. – B.G.

WHERE THERE IS NO SMOKE… A DIESEL?? Today’s modern Diesel engines are a lot different than those we used to see and hear. Gone is the noise, smoke and smell of the past and replacing them is the modern electronic fuel injected, quiet and clean modern Diesel. Many people have purchased Diesel trucks for their pulling power and great fuel economy and are reaping the benefits of reduced maintenance and lower fuel bills. Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance

A suspicious fire destroyed the Marketplace IGA in Fort Langley Tuesday, and its loss has rocked the villagers. Smoke over the scene gave an eery early morning glow to the scene of destruction. More photos and news coverage online at www.langleyadvance.com.

Suspicious blaze

IGA fire a community loss It was with much regret that I write to express my utter grief and sadness at the news of the Fort Langley IGA burning to the ground this [Tuesday] morning. Having lived and raised my children in this community for the last 13 years, my heart goes out to everyone in the Fort, specifically the seniors and the disabled who relied on this wonderful family-run grocery store. Not only was it a cherished historic landmark but the family who owned and

ran it were deeply loved and respected. My heart goes out to the owners and employees, you are all in the thoughts and prayers of not only my family but the entire community. Kudos to Langley Advance reporters Matthew Claxton and Heather Colpitts for the wonderful photos that captured the heartwrenching ordeal. After seeing them on your website, I must say I shed quite a few tears. They will be forever emblazoned in my mind.

As a Fort Langley resident of more than 25 years, I need to express my deep sadness at the loss of our local IGA to fire yesterday [Tuesday] morning. The loss of the store is one thing, but far more than the building, my sense of loss runs deeper for the Lee family. The Lee family know most of us, cared about our needs, smiled and welcomed us – always – when we went in to gather our groceries. It was like visiting a neighbour. In a living village like Fort Langley, these regular connections create friendships that develop over the years.

These connections weave together a caring community. Groceries can be bought anywhere, but you cannot replace that kind of warmth and personal attention. I want the Lee family to know how our hearts are with them right now, how much we already miss them, and hope that they will rebuild and re-enter our community lives in as meaningful a way as they have until now. If there are ways that we can help, I know all of us would like to know what we could do.

Suggestion has merit Food throw disgusting Dear Editor,

Dean Holcombe’s [Better solution cheaper, Dec. 28, Langley Advance] has a tremendous amount of merit to solve the Glover Road/Langely Bypass traffic issue. I am all for it and would add the trenching of the railway (since they won’t go away and volume will only increase as Pacific Rim countries expand). Use the trenching material for the proposed ramps. Trenching will also reduce lateral noise from the trains, as well as potential catastrophic derailments. Let’s get Mayor Rick Green, councillors, and B.C. government officials on side, and get started in 2011. Someone will figure out how to solve the interim traffic problems while this project takes place. Well thought out Dean and a “Money Saving” proposal. Really refreshing and yet so simple!

Dear Editor,

A Diesel isn’t right for everyone and they do cost more to purchase and maintain but they do make up for it in reliability and longevity. Another thought to consider with Diesels is that not every repair shop or automotive technician is trained and equipped to handle their service and repair needs. With the cost of Diesel engines being well above the $10,000 mark, you probably want to take it to someone who is well versed in their unique service needs.

A teen sexual assault victim is still dealing with the aftermath. by Amy Judd

Postmedia Network Inc.

A Langley man has been charged in a high-profile case involving the rape of a teenaged girl in Pitt Meadows. Dennis John Allen Warrington, 19, of Langley, was one of the two men charged on Wednesday in connection with the sexual assault, which occurred during a rave party in September. Warrington has been charged with making and distributing child pornography. Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for the RCMP Lower Mainland District Regional Police Service, said Warrington was arrested at a home he frequents in Maple Ridge on Wednesday. Another man, Colton Ashton McMorris, 18, from Maple Ridge has been charged with sexual assault.

RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen delivered details Thursday morning at the Maple Ridge detachment about two more charges laid in the Pitt Meadows rave sex assault back in that occurred back in September. He turned himself in to police along with his legal counsel, and was the man previously arrested and then released. Both have been released with the promise to appear

in court on Jan. 12. Charges have already been approved against a 16-year-old from Maple Ridge for the production and distribution of child pornography.

Ridge Meadows RCMP do not anticipate making any further arrests on the case at this time, according to Sgt. Thiessen. “Initially we did say and we still do feel that there was more than one suspect involved in this sexual assault,” he said. “The information that we received from witnesses, statements that we received, clearly indicated in our minds that that was the case, however bringing that before the courts is a whole other issue.” Meanwhile, the victimization of the girl has not ended. In a statement to the media on Thursday on her and her family’s behalf, Thiessen said “our daughter has been bullied and has had to leave school.” In the statement, the girl said “to the people who did not support me, who called me names, who spread lies about me, thank you because you made me much stronger than I’ve ever been before.”

Home stagers put helping others on big stage A Langley woman headed up the makeover of a women’s group home in Vancouver recently. by Adrian MacNair

news@langleyadvance.com

A Langley businesswoman and a dozen other home stagers descended on the Downtown Eastside recently to makeover a women’s group home. Heather Stewart, named the 2009 New Entrepreneur of the Year by the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce, teamed up with Heather Kleim of Epic Empire Designs to help those less fortunate. Dubbed “The Heathers,” the two women coordinated the idea via social media networks to makeover Sereena’s House for Women – a transitional home for 56 women trying to get off the street. “This is the first time putting a group together to do this kind of home staging,” Stewart said of the Dec. 6 makeover. The home stagers spent six months collecting donated furniture, artwork, and other decor to refurbish Sereena’s, complete with wrapped gifts to put under the Christmas tree for the residents. Stewart was able to use donations from people in Langley and around the Lower Mainland in the makeover. The only items that couldn’t be donated were fabrics, because of the risk of insect

Kleim was inspired to get other stagers together to help those less fortunate after hearing how a Kamloops woman was helping out in Vancouver. “I found her story very moving,” Kleim said. In their discussions on Twitter, The Heathers found one of their common goals was to help develop communities through

their work. This led to the creation of a group of home stagers who eventually came together for the Sereena’s makeover. Stewart, armed with a diploma in marketing management and real estate, plus years of working for the BC Assessment Authority, combined her experience and a life-long interest in interior design, decorating, and sewing to begin a home staging company in Langley in 2008.

Since then, the market for home staging has grown steadily, said Stewart. “More and more homeowners are watching HGTV and realizing that presentation is really important.” Stewart said home staging helps people make an emotional transition from seeing their house as a home to seeing it as a product selling on the open market. The same beautification principles hold true for the makeover of Sereena’s. “The floors used to be painted plywood in one room and concrete (in the other),” Kleim said. “And the walls used to be all white and chipped.” The floors are now covered with a faux-stone linoleum tile (donated by Mira Flooring in Langley) and the walls with a creamy mustard paint, a colour that was picked to match the artwork. The cost of the makeover would have been $32,000 under a private contract. The women who run Sereena’s said the residents live in 120-square-foot suites and have no common area to eat, watch TV, or socialize. They said there was no money in the budget to fix up their rooms, so they’re grateful for this project. Not only will it give the women a place to eat and congregate, but it will help them in their recovery by improving their nutrition and social skills, the Heathers said. Most important, it gives them a sense of home.

Rising out of ashes

The show must go on for the Langley Fine Arts School. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

T

he community can show its support for the Langley Fine Arts School and its Chief Sepass Theatre by attending tonight’s Phoenix Concert. On Oct. 30, vandals set the theatre on fire, resulting in 56 performances having to be cancelled and the loss of $12,000 in revenue to the school. Brad Dirks, a parent and one of the organizers, said he was impressed with the strong spirit at the school despite the fire and its destruction. The restoration is complete and the students and staff are putting on a celebration event. The Phoenix Concert goes for 24 hours (starting this morning and culminating in a pancake breakfast Saturday morning). But the portion that’s open to the public is today, 11:30 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. and 3:30 pm. to midnight. During those times there will be various acts. Band answers the call of metal-hungry kids

A thrash metal band inspired by classical music performs at the Fernridge Hall in Langley on Jan. 8. by Adrian MacNair news@langleyadvance.com

W

hen the vocalist and guitarist for the band Titan’s Eve lists his musical influences, he may raise a few eyebrows. Brian Gamblin, 24, said he’s most attracted to “big epic scores” from classical symphonies. Whether it’s Tchaikovsky or Stravinsky, or their more contemporaneous counterparts such as Danny Elfman, James Horner and John Williams, Gamblin has an appreciation for classical music. The thrash metal band Titan’s Eve, however, is far from the classical genre. “When people find out about my influences, they ask, ‘oh, why aren’t you in an orchestra’?” Gamblin said. “But I love thrash.” Gamblin and his younger brother Kyle, 22, form half of the band, which is also composed of Jesse Hord on bass and Casey Ory on drums. “I listened to Finlandia growing up,” Gamblin said. “Lots of guys listened to bands like Metallica, but I was never fanatical about those bands. As far as inspiration goes, I’d credit Brian (Head) Welch of Korn.” Gamblin said guitar players are always trying to find music that is complex, fast and intense, and that’s why he got into the thrash and power metal genre. “It’s all complex guitar,” he said. “There’s a guitar player named Yngwie Malmstein who influenced me. But my biggest influence would have to be Michelangelo Batio, for lead guitar shredding.” Gamblin said the band is looking forward to performing in Langley. “We hear there are a lot of metal-

Titan’s Eve is a Vancouver-band consisting of Brian Gamblin, Casey Ory, Kyle Gamblin, and Jesse Hord. They’re performing Saturday. hungry kids out there.” The band Tribune invited Titan’s Eve to perform second billing in Saturday’s concert. “I think there are a lot of people who like metal, it’s just a matter of getting them out,” Gamblin added. The chemistry of his band has been great since it was formed in 2008, Gamblin elaborated. The Red Deer native moved to B.C. three and a half years ago after taking musical theory in college. So far, Gamblin said he’s enjoying the West Coast. “I like the weather. I love the ocean.” The name Titan’s Eve also seems to exemplify the relatively new band, as Gamblin explained it. “What it represents is a great beginning. Titan is powerful and Eve is the beginning.” Their debut album, Divine Equal, is based on John Milton’s Paradise Lost and the Book of Genesis, and set for release Feb. 1.

Thrash metal can often be wrongly perceived as hostile or violent, Gamblin said. “It’s powerful aggression, that ultimate form of a musical war,” he said. “You have to be able to move someone emotionally, either with lyrics or the melody.” Gamblin’s music is sometimes misunderstood, but that it’s part of being a musician, he said. “Most metalheads are outcasts in some way. They try and find their niche in the world, and that’s what we’re trying to do.” So, what can people expect from a Titan’s Eve performance? “It really depends on the vibe in the crowd and the energy, and sometimes you can get a mosh pit going,” Gamblin said. “You build up the energy of the music and at the right moment the kids will do it on their own or you can insinuate they should start moshing to get the energy going. Sometimes kids will go to a concert

and feel they won’t be able to break free from that norm. Once you get kids who feel no one is judging them anymore, they can release that pent-up energy.” Titan’s Eve toured across Canada all the way to Halifax last summer, performing in locations ranging from little pubs to Le National in Montreal. Now the band is looking at touring the western United States, and even a possible European tour. Langley is the first of just two engagements the band will perform in before the album release. Gamblin said he hopes people give them a listen. “If people want to have a good time and thrash around and get a good blast of metal music, come on out,” he suggested. Titan’s Eve, Tribune, Auroch, and Tyrannicide perform an all-ages show at Fernridge Hall (2389 200 St.) on Saturday, Jan. 8. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.

K

ayci Gough is so relieved that her two-year-old toddled over to her on the couch a couple of years ago, kissed her on the forehead and said “I love you, mommy.” At the time, the young mother was in despair and was going to commit suicide. She said her farewell to her little boy and was going to overdose before her husband got home from work. Her son’s words broke through her pain and got her to reach out for help. “He saved my life,” Gough said. Now this university student, along with others, want to help young people, and have planned Vision of Hope, an awareness raising and fundraising concert Saturday, Jan. 8 for the Blue Wave Foundation. “Our goal in hosting this concert is to

raise awareness in our community for depression, suicide, and self-injury, and let those struggling know that there is help available and rescue is possible,” she said. The Blue Wave Foundation was started a few years ago by Langley residents Jack and Margaret Lee to help youth struggling with mental health issues, self-harm and thoughts of suicide. Blue Wave will have a guest speaker make a presentation that evening in addition to the music. On the playlist are Langley band Couch Cushion Fortress, former Langley band Exit 200, Maple Ridge’s Rebecca Mason and Fighting for Ithica, as well as A Cold City Night and A New Divide. There will be a concession, and a fundraiser in which people decorate balloons containing glow sticks. They are done in support of someone struggling or someone who has died. Tickets are $10 in advance (from any of the performers) or $15 at the door. The allages show is at The Venue, 5708 Glover Rd. More information is on the Vision of Hope Facebook site.

ow that Christmas is over, some folks are choosing January or February as a time to escape on vacation – many picking sunnier, warmer destinations. By taking a copy of the Langley Advance on the trip, they could win. The Advance is launching a new, interactive program that invites readers to email a photograph of themselves or other Langley residents proudly holding up a

copy of their hometown community newspaper – The Advance – in front of a somewhat identifiable location on their travels. By sending that high-resolution colour jpeg, along with the name of all subjects in the picture, and the location, they can share it with other faithful readers of the Langley Advance’s print and online editions. But, moreover, publisher Ryan McAdams announced that those who submit a picture before the end of February will automatically be entered to win a surprise adventure package. The contest ends Feb. 28, but the Advance Travellers will be an ongoing feature for Langleyites.

Theatre

Players kick off 2011 Auditions are being held for the spring show, while actors prepare to unveil For Better.

I

t’s looks like it’s going to be another busy year ahead for the Langley Players Club. And if this month’s itinerary is any indication, it’s going to be a funny one. First on the agenda is auditions this weekend for a Neil Simon comedy, Lost In Yonkers, running this spring. Director Mary Renvall is looking for two teenage boys, two men between 30 and 40 years of age, and two women between 25 and 35, and one other woman between the ages of 50 and 70. The show runs April 7 to May 7, but it is also being entered into the regional theatre competition, so successful actors must also be available May 8-14, and possibly July 8. The auditions are being held Sunday, Jan. 9 and Monday, Jan. 10, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Langley Playhouse, 4307 200th St. Candidates must bring a resume and headshot, and be prepared to rehearse three times a week. For information, contact Renvall via email at maryloo@ shaw.ca, or assistant director Raymond Hatton, rayhat@ shaw.ca. Meanwhile, other Players members have been working behind the scenes in recent weeks, preparing for the upcoming release of For Better. This modern comedy runs Jan. 20 to Feb. 19, Thursday to Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15. This is a story by Eric Coble that depicts a plugged-in world of email, text-messaging and camera phones. Do a bride and groom really need to be in the same country to go on a honeymoon? Karen and Max are getting married. At least, if their jobs will ever allow them to be in the same city at the same time, that is. A modern comedy, For Better is a hilarious new farce that pokes fun at how busy our lives have become, and at our dependence on the communications gadgets in our lives, said Langley Players president Angela Bell. More information about this and other Langley Players undertakings, visit www.langleyplayers.com.

be found in compact ones. Especially productive bush beans include Rodcor, a yellow, and Royal Burgundy, a purple, both from Dam Seeds. There’s also a dwarf redand-white flowered runner bean, Hestia, from T&M. But for container growers that hope for larger crops, I recommend planting pole beans – if you can handle trellising them or using poles to help them climb. With container vegetables, cylindrical beets such as Cylindra (13 cm long) or Rodina (15-20 cm), both from Veseys, or the new Taunus (15-17 cm) from Dominion (www.dominionseed-house.com) are very useful and easy to slice. The greens are nutritious. With carrots, I see that Resistafly is being offered by Veseys. This type of carrot reduced my carrot fly infestations considerably – but didn’t eliminate them. Scattering left over seed in the garlic bed resulted in much cleaner carrots, and fewer disappearances through slugs. The AAS winner, Purple Haze Hybrid, (listed everywhere) with its dappled purple/orange skin, 20 cm length, and longer storage potential should be a good choice, especially in balcony containers undiscovered by carrot rust flies. There’s a beautiful-looking squash collection from Veseys, called Wild Bunch. The types resemble Turks Turban, Blue Hubbard, the heritage Triamble, Buttercup, Kabocha, and more.

Veyseys also list the delectable Heart of Gold – an extremely productive acorn squash that has green and cream stripes, and is just the right size for a twoperson meal. People interested in heirloom vegetables might want to check out www.Richters. com. Offerings include the delicious and incredibly productive, small, round yellow lemon cucumber (which doesn’t keep long once cut) and the truly hardy Red Russian kale. Richters also lists the drought-resistant, mat-forming New Zealand spinach (which holds up in cooking better than standard spinach), buttercrunch lettuce, and cultivated dandelion, which has a slightly bitter taste but is succulent and very rich in iron.

he first weeks of the new year are the best time to plan the food garden and order vegetable seed, while interesting new items such as blight-tolerant tomato seeds are still available. One of those is a new cherry tomato, Mountain Magic, from Veseys (www. veseys.com), said to have resistance to late blight and firm texture for long storage. Many cherry tomatoes have a small degree of tolerance, but so far, the only small tomato I’ve found with marked (but variable) resistance is the tiny-fruited currant tomato, Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium, listed this year by Richters (www.richters.com). Seed of the large-fruited ‘Legend’ F1 hybrid is available from T&M (thompsonmorgan.ca). It had truly remarkable blight-resistance when I grew it. The fruits weren’t that tasty, in my view, but the plant stood into early November, and the fruit, stored inside, kept to January. Green beans or runners are among the most productive vegetables one can plant – and some bean pods are now fatter and/or stringless. Two oval-round listings from www.damseeds.com are the 25 centimetre-long green bean, Neckargkonigin, and the yellow version, Neckargold. Dam Seeds also offers a deep purple ovalround pole bean, Blauhilde, which turns green when cooked. Among runner beans, I’ve been very happy with the stringless, smooth-skinned, red-flowered Butler from www.chilternseeds.co.uk, and I’m glad to see a similar, white-flowered stringless runner, Moonlight, available from T&M. Every colour and type in regular pole beans can also

University men’s volleyball

Spartans top Classic tourney

The Calgary Dinos were unable to slow down host Trinity Western in the gold-medal game.

The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team won the warm-up tournament. Now it’s time to prepare for the real thing. In a dry-run for hosting the CIS nationals in March, TWU played host to the Spartans Holiday Classic and won in impressive fashion, with a threeset sweep over the Calgary Dinos in Wednesday night’s final. Set scores were 25-22, 25-14, and 27-25. The Spartans were the better side in every major statistical category as they outhit (23.8 per cent to 5.2 per cent), out-killed (4528), out-blocked (10-2.5), and out-dug (42-36) their opponents from Calgary. “Our team is really good at putting pressure

on people,” TWU coach Ben Josephson said, after the match. “I thought our servers did a good job of making difficult serves so it eliminated one of their offensive options. I thought our guys played a very heady game tonight and we need to because they’re a very heady team.” The Spartans’ success started from the opening serve. After Trinity Western’s Lucas Van Berkel had only seven kills in the semifinal against Queen’s, the big man in the middle had five kills on five attempts in the first set alone. Although as a team the Spartans only hit 16.1 per cent, it was good enough to get the first set win as Calgary hit even less at 3.2 per cent. In the opening set, the Spartans went on a 10-2 run, one in which four different players got kills, to end the game 25-14. With setter Ben Ball distributing the ball all over

the place, TWU took the second set with Mikiah Schalk leading the team with eight kills, and four other Spartans with at least three kills each. In the third set, the game was going Calgary’s way up until the score read 19-16 for the Dinos. Josephson called a timeout and out of that, TWU scored two quick points and stole the momentum. Mikiah Schalk’s serving ace then tied the set 1919 and the game turned into a dog-fight with TWU pulling it out 27-25 thanks to a pair of late Josh Doornenbal kills and a Schalk kill to finish the game. Setter Ben Ball led the team with an impressive 43 assists, which is only four off the Spartans record for most assists in a three-set game. The previous record was held by Josh Howatson, who had 47 assists against Calgary Jan. 21, 2006. Doornenbal had a game-high 13 kills, while

\Schalk had 11. Libero Jarrod Offereins finished with 12 digs while Dan Jansen Van Doorn recorded seven blocks. ••• An impressive 21-kill performance from Rudy Verhoeff helped TWU to a four-set victory over Queen’s University in the tournament semifinal Tuesday at the LEC. Scores were 25-23, 1925, 25-17, and 25-21. The win puts the Spartans in the tournament final. After winning the first set, TWU lost the second in a mistake-ridden frame, only to rally with wins in the third and fourth sets to close out the match. ••• The Spartans opened the Holiday Classic on Monday with a quick three-game sweep over the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club Men. Set scores were 25-18, 25-20, and 25-19.

team from Richmond, a familiar opponent. The game was a see-saw battle with the Eagles tying the game 6-6 in the third period. Neither team was able to claim victory during regulation time, and so the game headed to a sudden-death, four-onfour overtime period. Overtime started fast and furious and, to the delight of Eagles’ fans, the Langley team found the back of the net a little more than two minutes into the period to capture the bronze medal. “It was a combined effort from all the players and we look to continue this success in the new year,” Eagles manager Don Berdusco said. The Eagles players include Angus Redmond, Derrick Berdusco, Chris Ceraldi, Nick Coltura, Josh Cronin, Michael Dion, Josh Green, Devon Guemos, Michael Lodge, Ben Meadows, Kenny Prato, Jake Taylor, Kurt Thrussell, Luke Vampa, Jeremy Whalen, Danny Wilson, and Brighton MacDonald. The team is coached by Jason Northard.

The Langley A1 Eagles were bronzed at the 30th annual Richmond International Midget Hockey Tournament over the Christmas break. The AAA Division consisted of 28 teams from throughout B.C., Alberta, Alaska, California, Colorado, Texas, Washington, and Arizona. Sporting a three win and one loss record through the round-robin, the Eagles faced a strong Rocky Mountain Roughriders team from a private hockey school in Denver in the semifinal. The Eagles trailed 5-1 early but battled back to within a goal at 5-4. However, they could not sustain the pressure and fell 11-4 to this Colorado team. The next challenge came in the bronze medal game, where they faced the host

WRIST PAIN

Bell Carpal Tunnel Syndrome #30 gave quick relief within an hour. I was hand milking cows and began having weakness, numbness and pain shooting up my arms. Pain increased at night. My doctor suggested surgery as the only option. Not true! The pain and numbness are all gone after taking #30. I can do now whatever activity I want. Marjorie Wilson, 55, Dubuc, SK ! I’m a car mechanic. Holding tools was getting increasingly difficult because of wrist and tendon pain. After 2 weeks on #30 I’m fully productive #30 again. Cancelled scheduled surgery. William Marrero, 56, Miami, FL ! I was wearing wrist braces. A woman saw it and told me she had relief right away with #30. I got some same day. It worked for me as well. Thanks a million. Diane Frank, 49, North Battleford, SK ! I’m a nurse and work with my hands all day. I experienced increasing pain in my hands and fingers. Surgery was the only option I was told. My husband found #30 for me. I have no more pain or inflammation since. You have a life long customer. Nina Wallace, 52, Dacula, GA

ARTHRITIS Pain free in 2 weeks!

This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that was specially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Nick A. Jerch, President We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100 testimonials with full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some #1 examples: ! Doctor suggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON !My hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CA!I tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON!Cancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK.!For 32 years I cried barrels of tears. Was in and out of hospitals costing society tens of thousands of dollars. I have taken many thousands of pills that nearly killed me. Finally 3 bottles of Bell Shark Cartilage costing less than $100 stopped a lifetime of suffering without side effects. Eleanor Sauson, Shigawake, QC!Others write: Can walk again for hours…Climb stairs without hanging on to railing…First time in 15 years can sleep at night…Rheumatoid pain in joints down 90%, same for my sister.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Remain ambitious. You see things wisely, your “executive decisions” are good. The barrier that appeared last week (refusal/ competition from another?) is not gone, but you’re moving beyond it. Retreat, rest and plan future actions Sunday. Your energy surges Monday to Wednesday – you’ll need it to run the gauntlet of barriers and problems that face you – give it a heroic try! It ends with a comforting message or thought. Chase money (or buy important items) Thursday/Friday – smooth luck accompanies you. Saturday brings talks, trips, casual friends – and starts six weeks of social joy! Taurus April 20-May 20: You’re making some of the most important contacts of this decade, over the last year and this month. Be sociable, say hello, join new groups and clubs. Strictly avoid legal hassles this week. Take care with “big money” Sunday to Wednesday – unrealistic hopes could lead you astray. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness soar Wednesday night through pre-dawn Saturday – a good time to socialize, join that new group, or whisper words of love to someone! Chase money, shop, sell items Saturday. Friday starts six weeks of possible friction with bosses, parents – be humble, not sassy! Gemini May 21-June 20: This week contains yes’s and no’s. The biggest “no” occurs Tuesday and Friday in investment, large money, power, clout and sexual areas. (Especially if these also involve legal, international, intellectual and cultural arenas.) The yes’s? In work, health, career Monday to Wednesday and Saturday: commitment equals eventual winning! If you have to choose between love, creativity and risk on one side and big money, clout, power, sexual magnetism on the other, choose love, creativity, risk: they control the environment right now. Your finances need change, but not expansion. You’re loved.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships: partnerships, marriage, exciting prospects if single – and on opportunities, opposition, litigation, negotiation, relocation. Be patient if a legal matter gets in the way of a work project before Thursday: this barrier should fade by late month or March. Recent relationship intensity will lighten Saturday onward. This day starts a six-week period of investment in your career (via money, time, commitment, any of these). But avoid “pure investments” these six weeks – they might “burn cash.” Thursday/Friday bring social delights! Retreat, rest, plan Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Another 11 days of work and health drudgery. But this trend is relieved by a nice, buoyant romantic breeze. After Saturday, too, life becomes so exciting you’ll forget that work surrounds you! However, you probably have lots of unfinished chores “hanging fire” after a few weeks of neglect or misdirected efforts. Focus on those now, briskly clear away as much as you can. Don’t mix sex and romance before Thursday, nor creativity and “building,” nor investment and a gambling urge. Be ambitious, seek out higher-ups Thursday/Friday – luck accompanies you. Saturday brings social joys! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The emphasis lies on romance, creative urges, speculation and a love of “risk,” children’s affairs, pleasure and beauty. You’re riding a winning streak! But don’t expect a lot of cooperation from spouse, others, regarding any property, security or family notion you have. They’ll only join in if there is an ambitious angle for them. Don’t try to seal any deals before Thursday. Though two weeks remain in this romantic phase, you’ll need to make your bid for intimacy now, as Saturday ends a long “sexual magnetism” streak. (Another, life-changing one comes Nov. 11 to July 2012.)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The main accent lies on family, home, security, real estate, gardening, nutrition, Mother Nature. This area faces significant (world-changing) transformations now to 2024. This week (and the past five) domestic conditions fight your partnership yearnings. E.g., you live in different cities, or your place is such a mess you fear to invite anyone home, or “Mommy” lives on the couch. However, Saturday eases this: you start six weeks of heightened romantic prospects and intensity. This leads to a February-June blooming of splendid relationship luck, and in turn to eight years of love excitement. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Paperwork, details, communications, errands – you have a lot of small chores to perform. You’ll do them easily. Your money luck improves. Buy a gift for a loved one. Sunday’s romantic. Tackle chores Monday to Wednesday – but avoid money topics, or chasing money. Relationships inspire, attract, open doors to success Wednesday night to Saturday pre-dawn. Be outgoing, eager, diplomatic – love could shine! Saturday brings mysteries, financial and sexual opportunities. This day begins six weeks of possible domestic friction – channel this energy into repairs or build a new job “base.” Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Continue to chase money. You might have to make some decisions or pronouncements about home, family, real estate – you’re still ultra-lucky here to Jan. 21. Buying a new home is favoured Jan. 9, 10 (before 2 p.m. PST) 13,14, 15, 19 (to 1:30 p.m.) 20 and 21. Money continues to flow beside you – bringing more, but prompting you to spend more. Sunday’s for home, family. Romance, creative projects, speculation call you Monday dawn to Wednesday eve. Tackle chores and health issues Thursday/Friday: you’ll succeed easily! Exciting meetings, opportunities Saturday.

Jan. 9 - Jan. 16 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma, pizzazz and effectiveness ride high! Make contacts and satisfy your curiosity, especially Sunday. Get out all week, chase, begin important projects. Demand an end to unfair or stale situations Monday to Wednesday. Romance, creative surges, speculative urges and pleasure visit you Wednesday night to Saturday predawn. Tackle chores Saturday. This day, a long period of determination and sexual magnetism ends; this was a complex “gift,” for it also nudged you toward the end of many things. Most things existing before 2008 are ripe for ending. Soon – the new! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to rest. Lie low, contemplate people and situations, and make plans. Be charitable. Deal with government agencies, institutions, corporate head offices. This week and next are your last “opening” for a while to make a major purchase or launch a lucky earnings vehicle. Sunday is particularly good for this. (But DON’T buy high-tech, electronics, etc. before Thursday.) Talks, trips and casual friends fill Monday-Wednesday. Deal with family, real estate Thursday/Friday – luck accompanies you. Starting Saturday, you’ll be active, magnetic and determined, for six weeks! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Bosses, parents and higher-ups treat you with new approval or affection for the rest of January. Take advantage – socialize, schmooze. Money often flows along “networks.” Your energy remains high Sunday. Be ambitious Monday to Wednesday, especially in the pursuit of money. (These are not really good purchasing days, though, nor for gaining the co-operation of your equals/peers.) Casual friends, siblings, communications and travel fill Thursday/Friday – all is smooth, easy! Settle into a “down home” weekend Saturday. This day starts six weeks of secret money plans or “charity money.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Safety

Be prepared for winter driving conditions While Langley has managed to escape an early winter blast, chances are, the weather outside will indeed turn frightful before spring flowers bloom again. Residents and drivers living and commuting in the Lower Mainland could possibly see some snowfall by the middle of next week, according to Environment Canada’s long range forecast. Which is why Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond recently said safe winter highway travel depends not only on vehicle preparation, but also learning as much as you can about how to handle B.C.’s winter conditions. “Adjusting your driving for winter conditions will help you reach your destination safely,” Bond said. “Motorists have a great resource in our DriveBC website, especially for pre-trip preparations this time of the year. Besides the over 160 webcams showing highway conditions, the website provides road reports, weather forecasts and winter driving tips.” DriveBC includes a number of tips:

• before the trip, check the current road conditions and weather forecast; • plan your route ahead of time to avoid any roads that could become dangerous; • learn and practise winter driving skills after a storm in an empty park-

When snowfall covers the roads in Langley and its surrounding areas, local tire shops are usually kept busy with the rush of drivers looking to switch from summer and all-season to winter tires.

ing lot; • practise such manoeuvres as handling a skid; • if you absolutely need to drive in stormy weather, take someone else with you; • try to travel only during daylight and let someone know your route; • drive according to road and weather conditions – keep at least four seconds distance between you and the vehicle in front of you; • drop your speed to match road

conditions – the posted speed is the maximum; • watch for black ice – slow down when approaching shaded areas, bridges and overpasses as these sections of road freeze sooner than others; • accelerate and brake slowly; • avoid sudden moves – slow down and steer smoothly and gradually to avoid skidding; • see and be seen – always drive with your vehicle’s headlights on;

• be extremely cautious when approaching maintenance vehicles; • If you get stuck or stranded, don’t panic – stay with your vehicle for safety and warmth. •••

Learn more about how to drive safely in winter conditions at: www.drivebc.com. Travellers may also get B.C. highway information from anywhere in North America by calling the toll-free DriveBC line at 1-800-550-HWYS (4997).
