Antone lived in a two-storey house set back from the road on the west side of Glover Road, not far from the entrance to the camp ground on Brae Island. The home is surrounded by cottonwood trees, and there is a large berm to the south. Another house shares the same driveway, and a few other houses are across the road. Police have been on the scene at the reserve, in the 9400 block of Glover Road on MacMillan Island, since Monday and were still interviewing neighbours and gathering forensic evidence inside the home Wednesday.

Investigators have the cooperation and support of Kwantlen First Nation Chief Marilyn Gabriel, Thiessen said. He described the chief and the band elders as very proactive in offering help to solve the case, and said there was a good relationship between police and the community. On Wednesday, police were seen knocking on nearby doors and talking to residents. Anyone with information on Antone’s murder is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-5514448, or CrimeStoppers at 1-800222-8477.

Local leaders are upset that medical marijuana growers are targets of violence. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Legal marijuana is proving a major crime headache for the Langleys. On Sunday morning, a medicinal marijuana grow operation in Brookswood was raided by armed thieves, the RCMP say. Two men knocked on the door at about 3:30 a.m., claiming they had car troubles. They forced their way past the residents, and tied up and blindfolded the victim. The two home invaders, armed with a rifle and a knife, ransacked the home looking for drugs, money, and weapons, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. The legal grow op in the garage was cut down and taken. Police arrived 10 minutes after the suspects had fled, at around 6 a.m. The suspects had fled in a red GMC pickup and a 1996 brown Buick Regal stolen from the homeowner. Fish friends help salmon thrive in Nicomekl Adopting a tiny salmon fry will help restock and rejuvenate a local stream. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

People ask Heather Jenkins if she’s raising her own salmon when they walk in to her downtown Langley seafood store, 1 Fish 2 Fish. “Sort of, yes,” she tells them. The salmon fry in the tank aren’t actually destined for the display cases at the Fraser Highway store. Instead, the 80 tiny fish will be released into the Nicomekl River this spring, with thousands of their siblings. But some of those fish will grow up in the Pacific and return to the Fraser River in a few years. Then some of them may well be caught and eaten, as either part of the commercial or recreational catch. After explaining that, Jenkins suggests people adopt a fish. For the second year, 1 Fish 2

Matthew Claxton/Langley Advance

Heather Jenkins and her son Spencer are both enjoying having a tank of growing young salmon in the 1 Fish 2 Fish store. Fish is running its Adopt a Fish program, hoping to raise $5,000 for the Nicomekl Enhancement Society, which runs the hatchery that supplies the 1 Fish fry. Supporting the hatchery is

important to Jenkins, who believes in keeping the fishery sustainable: “Without all the effort of the hatcheries, our stocks wouldn’t be in the places they are,” she said.

Thanks to the efforts of many people, she said, you can even fish in the Nicomekl River again. The fact that anglers returned to the Nicomekl four years ago was a proud achievement for the Nicomekl Enhancement Society, said president Guy Martin. With just 34 members, the allvolunteer group has run a hatchery for more than a decade and a half, starting with just a metal trough and a small shed. “Our job is to raise fish, and keep the Nicomekl in as best shape as we can,” Martin said. Everything, from the power bills to the cost of building boardwalks along the creek or new hatchery structures, comes from donations or grants. That’s why the Adopt a Fish program is such a huge help, Martin said. “This thing that Heather’s done is fantastic,” he said. He was a customer of her store and had talked about the society’s work with her, but she came up with the idea last year without prompting.

Report recommendations for the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor were brought up in City council Monday but not everyone agreed with the process. Councillor Dave Hall noted the report was fine but the consultation process wasn’t. “Why have open houses and say we value your input and your questions and don’t even pursue them?” Hall said. The report recommends the City and its partners go ahead with the RBRC plan but also consult with citizens who live along 196th Street between 53 and 56 Avenues during construction. The report also urges the City of Surrey confirm the intersection of Colebrook Road and 192 Street be maintained as is. Though the report recommended Langley move ahead on the project, Hall didn’t think the City had done enough for its own people. He said the difficulty with the whole project was the proponents of it were so insistent on protecting the interests of Surrey that they didn’t necessarily hear questions from citizens of Langley. “As a Langley councillor we should be looking at Langley inter-

ests and then proceed,” said Hall. Hall specifically raised the subject of using an existing road from Production Boulevard to 55A Avenue instead of constructing a new road with attenuating sound barriers. “We were told it was going to be affecting the businesses in Surrey. But surely we should be advocating for the citizens of Langley,” he said. Langley City director of engineering Gary Vlieg said the project was under an extremely tight budget and that changes to the route would mean the City would have to pay out more to existing business in the area.

That would have pushed the project beyond its budget, Vlieg said. Although council was satisfied with the plan, not everyone was happy with the overall presence of trains. “I’ve long opposed that coal train that runs through the middle of Langley,” Coun. Rory Storteboom said. “It cuts our city in half and has no business here and it’s a potential disaster.” Storteboom said he supported the plan based on public safety reasons. The plan is to be build rail overpasses on 196th and 192nd Streets and 54 Avenue.

No through road at High Point Only riders, walkers, and fire trucks will be allowed through at 200th Street and Zero. by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

There will be no route straight south to Zero Avenue along 200th Street, Langley Township council decided on Monday night. The council unanimously voted to permanently block vehicle access from 200th to Zero at the south end of the High Point development. The street has been built for several years, but was kept closed while High Point slowly builds more units,

so that large trucks wouldn’t rumble down Zero Avenue. However, local residents petitioned council to make the closure permanent. There will be access for pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency vehicles. Councillor Mel Kositsky also asked that access for riders on horseback be included, as there are a number of riders in High Point, and there’s a horse trail that runs through the area. Almost 100 per cent of the occupied properties supported closing the road. Councillors noted residents in the area are worried that if a route is ever opened, it could lead to drivers zipping through High Point at high speeds.

The victim of a home invasion was pistolwhipped during a robbery in Langley City on Thursday. by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Langley Mounties are looking for a woman who may have seen the suspects in a violent home invasion Thursday morning. At about 4:20 a.m., two men knocked on the door of the building manager in a complex in the 19700 block of 56th Avenue. The victim thought at first it was a tenant with a problem, but realized he didn’t recognize the two men. He tried to shut the door, but they forced their way in at gunpoint, according to Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. The thieves first demanded cash. When told there was no money in the home, they pistol-whipped the man once across the head and demanded jewelry. The thieves took a small amount of jewelry and ran on foot east through a rear alley. A Police Dog Services team was brought in and began tracking the duo, but was unable to find them. The dog handler passed a woman who might have seen the suspects. Police are eager to speak to her. The suspects are both described as Caucasian, about 5’9” tall, about 150 pounds, around 30 years old, and wearing all black. The victim suffered minor injuries in the assault. Anyone who saw the pair or who can help police is asked to call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200. Or, to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800222-8477.

A rather distinctive-looking person of interest is being sought after a Langley woman was hit in the head during a fight with a purse-snatcher. On Feb. 20, at about 9:40 p.m., a woman was walking in the 5100 block of 203rd Street in Langley City. She was headed home from work, said Cpl. Holly Marks of the Langley RCMP. A man rode up behind her and grabbed her purse, Marks said. The victim fought back, but the thief attacked the woman, hitting her and knocking her to the ground. The suspect rode off on his bike with the purse. Police searched the area, but could not find their suspect. The man was wearing a dark jacket and a camouflage hat, and was riding a beatup bicycle, Marks said. Police have since released several photos of a man they say is a “person of interest” in the case. One of the images was captured on or around the night of the attack. The other is believed to show the man without his ballcap on, showing his distinctive blond mohawk hairstyle. If people recognize the man in the photos, they can call the RCMP at 604532-3200, or, to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

While most of the fish being raised will stay in their tanks off of 232nd Street in rural Langley, the fry in the downtown store will get larger before the eyes of the public. The fish tank is a way to make the concept of adopting a fish a bit more concrete to people. “The kids love it,” Jenkins said. “It’s kind of fun to watch them grow

Last year, she raised $1,800 for the hatchery, in partnership with You’ve Got To Have Friends and other downtown businesses. Those partnerships are back for this year’s event, which will run until April 30th. That’s when the fish go into the creek, to survive as best they can on the trip to the Pacific.

New plan for fish farm

Gravel trucks rumbling through South Aldergrove have some Township councillors upset. by Matthew Claxton

&'))(('*

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A controversial trout farm planned for South Aldergrove seems to be back on, but Township council was slow in finding out. “No report, no explanation,” said Councillor Charlie Fox. “We have no idea of what this particular fish farm is going to look like.” Gravel trucks began rumbling off a property near the 700 block of 264th Street earlier this year, after a Dec. 1 decision by the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC). More than a year ago, in January 2010, the ALC turned down a plan to extract 147,000 cubic metres of gravel from the site. Original owner Ray Halvorson’s plan was to sell the gravel, and use the money as startup capital for a trout farm based in deeply-dug ponds. This plan appears to be different, with just 6,057 cubic metres, about 850 truckloads, approved for removal. However, Fox complained that neither the ALC nor the owners have given a lot of notice to the Township or to worried neighbours. Residents living around the site protested strenuously in 2009 about the plan. They get their water from shallow wells, and they were worried about contamination due to the digging. Michelle Nicholls, who lives adjacent to

the site, said neighbours heard rumours in the summer that the Halvorson’s had found funding to go ahead with the farm. But there was no official word from either the property owners, now a private company, or from the ALC. “Nobody’s telling us anything,” she said. Residents are not happy, and their concerns about water remain. “Apparently, there’s nothing we can do,” she said. She has spoken to several government ministries and agencies, but everything is proceeding as permitted, she said. If anything does happen to groundwater in the area, residents would be able to sue, she said. Right now, she and other families are watching their water quality carefully. A hydrogeological review by the Township last year concluded that there were too many unknowns about the local water table, and suggested that before any major gravel extraction, there should be test wells drilled and continuous monitoring of water. Gravel removal at the site has temporarily halted, Fox said. After neighbours complained, Township staff asked the site’s owner, which is now a corporation, to get a gravel removal permit. That is now working through the bureaucracy, but is likely to be approved. If there is major construction on the site, the owner would also require building permits from the Township, Fox said. However, he said it’s possible that pre-made fish tanks could be brought in which wouldn’t require building permits. The Langley Advance attempted to contact Ray Halvorson but was unable to speak to him.

Walter guides Canada

by Troy Landreville sports@langleyadvance.com

On the day Hockey Canada announced its roster for the national women’s team selection camp, its head coach Ryan Walter shared his thoughts over steak bites, cheese bread, and chicken wings at a local restaurant. Walter, a longtime South Langley resident and former player and assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks, is leading Canada into the world championships April 16-25 in Zurich and Winterthur, Switzerland.

The 52-year-old father of five made his coaching debut with the women’s national team at the Four Nations Cup in Newfoundland and Labrador last November, guiding the host to the gold medal, including a 3-2 overtime win against the U.S. in the championship final. Walter told the Langley Advance he’s really enjoyed working with the women’s national program. “Hockey Canada runs a great ship,” he said. “They allow the coaches to coach. I’ve really enjoyed being a head coach and being part of that process. I knew I needed to take that step. I’ve loved getting back at it.” The selection camp roster was unveiled Monday. Tryouts are scheduled for April 2-5 at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto.

It’s still our government

Casual references to the Government of Canada as “the Harper government” are all right – as long as everyone realizes that’s not an official designation. Political self-reference by the governing Conservative Party as “the Harper government” is no problem, either – as long as it’s clearly recognized that the label is being attached in a political context. Likewise, the term has been used in less flattering political contexts by opposition parties (“political” being the operative word), and they will undoubtedly find new and creative ways to cast aspersions on “the Harper government” – just as the Conservatives and New Democrats found clever ways to malign “the Martin government” and “the Chretien government” before it. In a more neutral vein, media take shortcuts, saving space in print or exercising simplicity for the sake of readers and listeners, with references to “the Harper government” or “Stephen Harper’s Conservative government” or “the federal Conservative government,” instead of droning repetition, or unwieldy references to the “Government of Canada led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper,” like “the Campbell government” for the Government of British Columbia, until “the Christy Clark government” (not to be confused with the former Glen Clark government) takes over. But use of “Harper Government” on official federal stationery suggests manipulative politicking, if not dangerous arrogance. Whatever we call it casually, it is officially Canada’s government, not Harper’s. Harper is the public servant we have entrusted to sit at the head of our government – for now. With the “in-and-out” scandal a festering black mark on “the Harper government,” and now not one, but two, rulings from the Speaker’s chair on unethical conduct in dealings with Parliament and the people of Canada, the Harper Conservatives could show a little contrition… and maybe a bit more respect for the niceties of democracy. – B.G.

Amalgamation

Union offers obvious benefits

Amalgamation

One for all

Dear Editor, The two-headed monster Some call it the Township, Others the City, Doing duplicate jobs, Oh, what a pity. Two men we call Mayors Each with a council on call, To accomplish the same job, To look after us all. We pay almost double, What other towns pay, For two sets of executives, To show us the way. We look to the west, To our huge neighbour Surrey, With one mayor and one council, Well run, without worry. But the Langleys must differ, As the citizen’s pay, Many extra salaries, Day after day. We live shoulder to shoulder, Drive the same streets, Have the same problems, And pay too many elites. Why don’t other places, Have two sets of mayors, Duplicate councils, Our tax dollar bears? Let us unite, For Langley is one, We need not duplicate Each job that is done, Let us have one mayor, And one council, as well, Serving one Langley, Where all of us dwell. Mike Harvey, Langley

result of such investigation would be painful to them. It is likely not known that amalgamation of various municipalities in the Greater Victoria area has become a very active issue. A steering committee was formed about two weeks ago. I do not think they will ask for an investigation. It is understood that the municipalities of Trail, Warfield, and Rossland are currently thinking about amalgamation, as are Fruitvale, Montrose, and Area A of the Kootenay Boundary Regional District. So why not the Township and the City of Langley? Do municipal councils perhaps not realize that economy of scale would directly kick in, and that amalgamation would be a logical thing to do for the meagre years that lie ahead? Do they not know that (to use a local cliche) tens of thousands of residents would likely vote in favour of it, if asked? Is that what they are afraid of? The Community Charter outlines procedures for amalgamation. It requires positive support of more than 50 per cent of voters. The referendum is to be instigated by the municipal-

ities, though it can also be required by the provincial minister responsible. It should be added that only the Kamloops and Kelowna amalgamations were “forced” by the provincial government, as all the others were pre-approved by plebiscite. The obvious advantages of 16 (twice in Abbotsford) amalgamations over the years in B.C. have been reaped by residents of all the municipalities involved. It is incomprehensible that both local councils remain so disinterested. Perhaps a series of individual written petitions to both municipal councils would influence them to think outside the box, for the sake of the common good, and to put the question to a referendum in November. Studying the obvious seems to be entirely unnecessary. We have only seven months to do it, so let’s establish a (non-political) steering committee, just like that in the Greater Victoria area. Jacob de Raadt, Langley [Note: A fuller version of this letter is online at www. langleyadvance.com.]

Amalgamation

Add residency information

Dear Editor, Maybe all letters to the editor, for or against amalgamation, should also include whether the writer resides in Langley City or elsewhere. Could the real reason be that the City is small, and has the same name and a major tax-contributing casino? It is certainly not the savings that would result if all the services were to remain the same, as most costs would simply transfer from one to the other. Maybe the concerns for two Langleys could be resolved if the taxpayers of the City got together and renamed the City “Pleasantville.” Then the amalgamators could get over it, and aim at bigger fish, say Surrey or Abbotsford. Let’s be honest, amalgamators are either greedy or ignorant of the facts. K. Miller, Langley City

All creatures equally not created Dear Editor, Mike Harvey is right [Animals as created as people, March 4 Letters, Langley Advance], animals are as created as humans. They weren’t created at all. They evolved from single-cell organisms, as we have and as all animals, plants, and fungi have. Ironically, the human intellectual blind-spot that necessitates the need for an invisible dictator/father in the sky was also evolved through natural selection. This is at least in part due to a human psychological tendency to see patterns and agency where there is none. I hate to break this to

Alder Inn Boundaries benefit all: minister

Keeping a strong boundary between urban and farmed areas of Langley will benefit both farmers and developers, the province’s agriculture minister says. Ben Stewart, who was named head of the ministry just last October, was in town on Friday and spoke to the Langley Advance about several issues. “We’d like to build stronger boundaries, so it’s clear both to

“Land speculators should be paying for the fact that it isn’t being used,” he said. Even speculators should at least farm the land in the interim, Stewart said. Creating opportunities for lands not currently in production is something that should be done, said Stewart. It can be made beneficial for both property owners and for farmers, he said. On the matter of the mushroom farm tragedy that took three lives in Langley in 2008 and left two other men severely brain damaged, Stewart said he was acutely aware of the danger of confined-space incidents, in which people are overcome by a lack of oxygen or noxious gases. A friend of his died trying to help another man who had been overcome by CO2 in a similar incident in the Interior. Stewart said his ministry has to support WorkSafe BC’s work protecting farms. But when new rules are created, they have to be both safe and workable. “We really do want to work with them to make sure their rules are thoughtful,” Stewart said. Another major local issue, the Mufford-Glover overpass, is still being re-negotiated by the roadbuilding team and the Agricultural Land Commission, Stewart said. He said a new deal may meet the objectives of both building the road and preserving farmland. However, he said his ministry doesn’t review or change ALC decisions. As far as how long he will be in his portfolio – he only became agriculture minister in October – Stewart said he’s aware there may be a cabinet shuffle when Christy Clark takes over as premier this spring. He said he’ll keep working until he finds out if someone else will head up the department.

municipalities and to people who are farming,” Stewart said. Langley and other Lower Mainland communities have both prime farmland, and a lot of pressure to grow and develop. “There’s competing interests for the land,” Stewart said. But he said communities have to work within the urban containment boundaries, which are largely laid out by the Agicultural Land Reserve (ALR) and the ongoing Metro Vancouver regional plans. Asked about land speculators who buy lands in the hope of getting it out of the ALR for development, Stewart addressed the issue that much of that land can lie fallow for years.

Gift shop owner relaunches singing career Only a few customers knew Ron Kalmakoff was a professional musician before entering retail. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@langleyadvance.com

“There was a comfort level t’s been one hell of a ride this past year for a Fort Langley for me that I forgot about shop owner who has dared to being away from the business.” relaunch a singing career at RON KALMAKOFF the age of 48. Little Cricket Gift Gallery owner Ron Kalmakoff isn’t willing to forego his shops in Fort Langley and Maple Ridge. But this artist spent the past dozen months (or so) rekindling his life-long love of music. It’s a passion, first ignited at a talent show during his teenage years, that sparked a professional music career that proceeded to span two decades. “My inner spark is back,” said Kalmakoff, smiling with a twinkle in his green eyes when he talks about his music. Looking youthful and energetic after spending hours inside the recording studio, the Saskatchewan-born singer – with his silvery tenor voice – was elated to talk about what led to his recently release CD, Turn Around. More than a decade ago, Kalmakoff was drawing applause for his sixth album, Journey of the Heart, when life took a harsh turn with a series of family-related Ron Kalmakoff, owner of Little Cricket Gift Gallery in Fort Langley, has rekindled his music career. events. “Life changes, revolves and moves in many different direcmusic in the past.” took some of my material to him. Heavy metal meets flamenco music, as an L.A. guitarist joins a Langley colleague for a concert. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

L

angley’s fast-strumming rumba flamenco guitar player John Gilliat will be teaming up with another North American flamenco specialist for this Saturday’s concert in Fort Langley. Gilliat first met Benjamin Woods of Los Angeles when the two were teamed up last November in Victoria to play for a guitar promotion. They also managed to squeeze in a brief concert in Ladner before Woods headed back to L.A. “The two of us just worked really well together,” Gilliat said. Considering he plays fast, complicated rhythms, it’s rare to find another guitarist who he can work well with, Gilliat said. Although the two guitarists are both rooted in flamenco, they have mixed that with very different influences. Gilliat likes to swirl some Latin jazz into his music. Woods has gone in another direction. “Ben, he mixes it up with heavy metal,” Gilliat said. “I hadn’t heard of anyone doing that. It’s really quite cool.” In fact, Woods is the founding member of the L.A. flamenco-metal fusion band Flametal. He’s also one of the few North American flamenco guitarists to attract

attention in the homeland of the musical style, Spain. Woods has been featured in El Pais, the country’s most popular newspaper, as well as in the country’s top selling flamenco magazine. “Like the blues is in America, flamenco is in Spain,” Gilliat said. While the roots of the music are still important to guitarists such as Gilliat, the modern age is making it easier to collaborate, even across continents. He’s already planning to record with Woods, and knows that technology will make such a collaboration easier. If the two can’t get together in person, there’s always the option of recording separately and combining their tracks via computer. Performers can sit down in a home studio and play their parts along with a “click track,” which allows two or more performances to by synchronized. Gilliat has worked with people in Japan emailing tracks back and forth already.

Improved downloading speeds have made such collaborations much easier in the last few years, he notes. He’s even heard of some artists practising together over the voice-over-internet program Skype. It isn’t perfect, because there is a bit of a delay in the signal getting from one end of the line to the other, Gilliat noted. This Saturday’s concert will feature not only Woods and Gilliat, but Stephanie Pedraza, a singer, songwriter, and traditional flamenco dancer. Based in Vancouver, Pedraza was born to a Latin American family and moved to Colombia at a young age, where she was immersed in the roots of Latin music. Backing up the guitarists and Pedraza’s performance will be bass guitarist Brent Gubbels, and percussionist Lyndon Dewitt. The performance will be this Saturday, March 12 at 8 p.m. in the Chief Sepass Theatre at the Langley Fine Arts School in Fort Langley. It’s not just the food that brings people to Kostas Greek Restaurant in Langley City There’s also traditional Greek music and eastern dance. Owners Kostas and Bozena Pappas combine authentic Greek cuisine with bouzouki music and belly dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. Kostas plays the bouzouki (a stringed musical instrument) on weekends, providing patrons with a taste of Greek life. Bozena said her husband was trained in Greece and played there when younger. The Pappases came to Canada 13 years ago, later opening their restaurant on Langley’s main drag. Kostas is an accomplished chef as well as a trained musician. The restaurant gets a lot of compliments on its food. The food is prepared fresh daily from the best quality ingredients, and the desserts are home-made. People enjoy the restaurant’s roast lamb, calamari, and steak and salmon. The restaurant offers special souvlaki dinners on Tuesday nights ($13.95 chicken, beef or lamb all-night) and early bird specials on Wednesdays and Thursdays 4-6pm ($13.95 chicken souvlaki, calamari dinner, or schnitzel with mushrooms and red wine sauce). Delivery and take-out specials are available every day, with choices of two chicken souvlaki for $24.95 or two baked pasta for $16.95. (HST not included.) Kostas was voted #1 as Langley’s Best Greek Restaurant from 2003 to 2010 and nominated for the small business award in 2003. The restaurant is located at 20080 Fraser Hwy. Whether you’re dining in, dropping by for takeout, phoning for delivery (604-5309531), Kostas Greek Restaurant is a must for any true fan of Greek cuisine. Questions & Answers

Test offers glimpse at critter control needs I’m a rookie at gardening, and I thought about turning part of my backyard into a veggie patch. But I’ve talked to a few people who say don’t bother, unless you can construct a fortress to stop squirrels, raccoons, birds, etc. Is it worth the bother?

Bill Magee, Vancouver nimal and bird problems vary from one neighbourhood to another and from year to year. For instance racoons living under your neighbours verandah could cause you huge garden problems. Once they’re discovered and removed, the crisis may vanish. Many gardens in Vancouver grow vegetables successfully with little evidence of fortresses. How many of the people who say “don’t bother” have gardened within a couple of blocks of your home? If racoons discover it in your garden, they will look around for whatever else is edible. They can eat all kinds of vegetables and berries, but that doesn’t mean they will. If they can find more tasty food in the neighbourhood, they’ll go for that instead. If you have a dog that spends time outside, racoons may be reluctant to visit. Dog droppings are said to deter raccoons. A wire fence set into the soil, with a floppy top section that’s bent outward, can protect against raccoons, but it’s the kind of ‘fortress’ that will harbor weeds and prevent you from easy access to your vegetables. Wanted man caught in City A man caught in a stolen truck turned out to be on a Langley watch list of prolific offenders. by Matthew Claxton

mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Another one of Langley’s most prolific criminal offenders has been arrested, police said. On Tuesday at about 4 p.m., an officer with the Core Enforcement Team in Langley City checked the license plate of a car at Fraser Highway and 206th Street. The car had been stolen from Chilliwack. The man behind the wheel, a 51-year-

old of no fixed address, was arrested and may face a charge of possession of stolen property. There was also a warrant for the man’s arrest for breaching a conditional sentencing order. Prolific offenders are those who have a long history of crime – often thefts and other property crimes. The Langley RCMP initially put together a list of 30 prolific offenders last fall, and a significant number have been arrested since then. Police said that with one hand, they offer prolific offenders help, usually through social service agencies and charities, to change their lives for the better. With the other hand, they said they would closely monitor the offenders in case they committed another crime.

Lightning skate to B.C. berth

The Langley Lightning midget rep girls hockey team are in the provincial finals, but not before overcoming some significant obstacles along the way. In the opening round of qualifying play, the Lightning, with a short bench of 11 skaters, tied and then lost to Maple Ridge in their first two outings. The Lightning had to win their third meeting with Maple Ridge, which they did by scoring with 20 seconds left in regulation. In the final game involving the two rivals, the Lightning edged Maple Ridge in a five-player shootout.

That win vaulted Langley into the final round against Richmond and Surrey, with the top two teams going to provincials. Richmond and Surrey finished first and second, respectively, during the regular season; Langley finished fifth. Langley started well, tying the powerhouse Richmond team 1-1 before blasting Surrey 6-1. Later, 2-1 losses to Surrey and Richmond meant the Lightning had to hope for a Richmond win or tie with Surrey in the final game. Richmond obliged with a 3-0 win. The Langley squad, down to nine skaters due

to injuries and travel plans, now heads to the provincial finals in Invermere March 20-24. ••• Team members are Sara Boehringer, Keara Graham, Amber Gudmundson, Kassandra Johnson, Karly Knudsen, Christina Mavritsakis, Rae-Ann McCarthy, Kaitlan McClurg, Laura McPhedran, Alyssa Nelles, Tessa Ratzlaff, Samantha Rogers, Samantha Schwartz, Brianna Tham, and Chelsea Wilson. The team is coached by Vince Nelles, who is assisted Dave McClurg and Lars Knudsen. Donna Boehringer is the team manager.

Pair of Spartans earn national honours For the second time in the past three years, Trinity Western University men’s basketball star Jacob Doerksen has been named a First Team All-Canadian. The Spartans fifth-year forward, who was recently named a Canada West All-Star for the fifth year in row, finished the regular season third in the conference with 21.6 points per game, second in field goal percentage at 62.1, and eighth in rebounds with 7.8 per game.

The 2009 CIS Player of the Year has also helped lead his team to the CIS national tournament for the first time in the school’s history. TWU opens the Final 8 against Ontario’s Lakehead today, Friday, in Halifax. ••• Doerksen’s teammate Tyrell Mara has been named the Canada West nominee for the Ken Shields Award as top student-athlete. The fifth-year Masters of Business student finished the regular season

averaging 11 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Off the court, Mara led TWU in a program for underprivileged children in inner-city Langley. The program usually took place one to two hours before Saturday home games. On Sundays, Mara cooks meals for the homeless at a local church and volunteers on a regular basis to cook and interact with the homeless. • More online at www.langleyadvance.com, click on “Sports”

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise high Sunday to Tuesday, giving you the ability to cope with some major obstacles or problems that have existed for two or three years. Your luck, karma and self-image hit the lowest spot in two decades over the last year and a half. Now you’re beginning the long climb upward, back to the sunshine. Things turn Monday about noon – relationships, finances, security and intimacy take on a comfortable, healthy glow! Your money and career luck climb midweek. But you hit a familiar relationship drag Friday/Saturday: being light, friendly cures it. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Lie low, rest and contemplate Sunday to Tuesday noon. Don’t tempt fate. Tuesday afternoon might start with a rush, a sudden friendship, a brilliant idea, or merely a wee uplift – in whatever way, a small signal comes that the next eight years are going to be different – you are stepping into a zone of increased awareness and intellectual acuity, of increased and smoother love, more travel, more learning; and if single, you will very likely marry. Life is fresh, mysteries flee (well, soon)! Expect attention all midweek. Chase money but beware spending, Friday/Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Be wary of investments, large financial undertakings, intimacy and any “private co-operation” Sunday – and all week. These are ethically OK Monday, but they still won’t yield practical profit. Work is reliable, though: you’re paid honestly, fairly. Relationships face some bumps, but you remain buoyant, and end happily. Retire for some rest and contemplation Tuesday noon to Thursday noon. Contacts with institutions, government or “head office” go well. Reconnect with spiritual realms. Your energy and charisma leap upward Thursday eve onward, but co-operation’s essential.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Your last week of work, drudgery and health concerns. Next week brings a month of fresh opportunities and excitement! For now, tackle chores so you’ll be free to chase those opportunities – some of which could involve love. Ambition, career and prestige relationships draw you Sunday to Tuesday noon. Co-operation will be lacking until Monday noon, so plan your most important moves for that p.m. Hopes, optimism, friendship and light flirtation play around you Tuesday to Thursday – one of the most exciting relationship periods of your life is starting! Retreat, rest Friday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You’re in a romantic, creative, beauty-aware time, and Sunday to Tuesday bring a mellow, understanding mood. Good – you’ll need all the understanding you can muster Sunday through noon Monday, when various obstacles try your patience, especially in the work arena. By noon this trend switches 180 degrees to success, and romance has a better than even chance, right into pre-dawn Tuesday. Your ambitions get a splendid opportunity Tuesday eve to early Thursday (unless you worry about security) – take the chance, early (Tuesday best). Optimism, happiness, popularity late week! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The accent remains on home, children, security, real estate, nature, stomach, soul and nurturing, for one more week. It isn’t the easiest week – romance and pleasure can’t seem to escape the realities of money and earnings. They’re intertwined, through late 2012. On the plus side, the same period (18 months) blesses you in emotional, serene, moral ways – you’ll feel good, right. (And you’ll be oddly protected from any disasters.) But don’t seek intimacy, sex nor investments Sunday. Gentle love, understanding and travel ideas enter mid-week. Be ambitious Thursday eve, Friday.

ARBOUR GREENE

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: This isn’t the easiest week. There aren’t any disasters (unless you’re impetuous Sunday or late week, Saturday). You’re just rowing against the wind in career, communications, media, travel, work and health zones. Plod onward, and get plenty of rest. Watch what you say or write Sunday and Friday/Saturday. Home’s no picnic Sunday and early Monday, but Monday p.m. into Tuesday noon brings a gratifying sense of emotional security and friendship. Contemplate romance midweek. Tackle chores (safely) Thursday onward. A brand new world of hope and friendship lies ahead! Taurus April 20-May 20: One more week of happiness, optimism, flirting, new plans, life’s vigour, friendships and entertainment! It won’t be a totally smooth time, though. Sunday contains some communications foul-ups (beware gossip, secret acts, especially regarding a partner) after which you feel gloom Monday morning. But all’s smooth after this, especially in shopping and earning, Tuesday/ Wednesday. Romance, gambling urges and creative surges arrive Thursday noon to Saturday noon -- but you might have to choose between “two attractions” or two actions. A chore you didn’t do nags at you. Gemini May 21-June 20: Plug away at career, ambition, prestige or authority-related chores. (If something in this arena began in 2010 or last January, it’s still a winner.) Be careful with money – make a major purchase, seek a pay raise or deal with important clients after midday Monday, not before (nor Sunday). Short trips, communications, paperwork, casual friendships and errands go well midweek. But someone’s evasive or deceptive around noon Thursday. All week, your hopes might struggle against a financial, romantic, age or health barrier. Try this: conform to the barrier; make it an aid.

Mar. 13 - Mar. 19 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Communications, paperwork, details, errands, casual friends, short trips and curiosity fill this week and next. In the slowest, most gradual way, like water on blotting paper, this area of your life will grow for the next 15 years. At the same time (perhaps illogically) your worries about money and income will fade. You enter eight years of “home excitement” this week. This can have a negative effect, bringing more stress to the home (so relax, exercise, guard digestion) and a positive one: money made from property, food/shelter areas. A big new life! Midweek joy, romance. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to chase money, but cautiously. This entire week, romance, gambling, sex, investments, lifestyle changes, secrets and “detective work” need to be handled carefully – or better yet, left alone, especially Sunday and Thursday onward.Tackle chores Sunday to Tuesday noon – follow safety rules Sunday/Monday. You glow with a certain sweet light all March, which can attract romantic attention. Tuesday afternoon to Thursday noon could provide some relationship excitement! Be diplomatic but eager these days. Secrets, “darker urges” arise Thursday/Friday – be honest, clean, safe. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness continue to put you on top. But this week has a couple of barriers which irk you a bit. They involve a partner, and/or your home situation, and/or money. (In all cases, money.) Ah, well, everything that has a compromise, has a solution. Sunday to Tuesday heightens your romantic, pleasure and beauty sensors. A creative surge arrives! (It’s better, easier, Monday p.m. onward.) Tackle chores midweek – you’ll do them swiftly, successfully. Good health news! Relationships present challenges Thursday to Saturday: be diplomatic, loving. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Consider the facts...

The average home on today’s market, if priced correctly, will sell in less than 3 weeks!

Why pay high commissions? Our commissions are totally negotiable! If we sell it ourself, % our commission is only of the selling price!

If you, the homeowner, wish to work your own open houses & at the same time you find a buyer, we do the negotiating and the paperwork, % etc., it’s only commission period! (Minimum $5000 00)
