Joanne Chiasson doesn’t want Langley kids to slip through the cracks of the education system the way her daughter Amy did. Amy passed away suddenly, at the age of 22, almost two years ago. That’s why Chiasson is putting together the Amy Langelaan memorial scholarship fundraiser on New Year’s Eve, to raise enough money to send six at-risk youth to post-secondary school. Chiasson said the scholarships are for kids who don’t fit the regular school system, but persevere in alternative schools like Cloverdale Learning Centre or Apex Secondary in Langley, both of which Amy attended. Amy was always a tomboy growing up, her mother said. Openly gay, she had to contend with being different from others. Police credit tip for ending string of pharmacy robberies The suspect in a string of pharmacy hold ups was arrested by Langley and North Van Mounties.
by James Weldon Postmedia Network Inc.
The RCMP believe they have caught the man behind a string of pharmacy robberies in Langley and on the North Shore. Ryan Molley, 31, was taken into custody Dec. 14 after a
seven-month investigation involving officers from both the North Vancouver and Langley detachments. He has since been charged with five counts of robbery. On June 8, a man fitting Molley’s description walked into the Save-on-Foods pharmacy at 1250 Marine Drive, allegedly claimed to have a gun and demanded that the clerk hand over a large quantity of Oxycontin, an addictive prescription pain killer. The employee complied, and the suspect fled, according to police.
Over the next three months, several similar incidents were reported by pharmacies in both North Vancouver and Langley. In each case, a man similar in appearance to Molley entered the store, allegedly passed the clerk a note claiming he had a gun and demanded they give him the drug. He was successful in some cases, but in others the pharmacy didn’t have Oxycontin on hand, according to police. Investigators broke the case after a witness wrote down the licence plate of a car connected with one of the alleged heists.
While no weapon was ever brandished or fired, the events nonetheless took an emotional toll on the alleged victims, said Const. Geoff Harder, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP. “The pharmacists all reported being completely traumatized by it,” he said. “Some of them have reported lasting effects: an inability to sleep, that sort of thing.” More than anything, the arrest was a matter of public safety, said Harder. “When there’s either the insinuation that [the suspect]
has a firearm or one is produced, it’s only a matter of time before someone does get hurt,” he said. “Addiction is a really powerful thing. It can drive people to do things that they wouldn’t otherwise do; it can drive people to hurt other people.” The five charges against Molley relate to five separate incidents. Investigators are considering two more charges connected to alleged robberies that appear to have involved the same approach. - James Weldon is a reporter for the North Shore News

Langley senior citizens are again falling prey to distraction thefts, with two people victimized since the beginning of the month. On Dec. 8, a man pretending to be a parcel delivery worker asked a homeowner if he could leave a package for a neighbour who was not at home. The man then asked if he could use the washroom, and used the opportunity to wander through the apartment, near the 20300 block of 54 Avenue, said Const. Jillian Roberts. The victim found the thief inside the apartment’s bedroom. The thief then said he would leave, saying he would let a partner in to the building with the parcel. After the “parcel delivery man” had left, the apartment owner discovered his wallet was missing. It was later found in the apartment elevator with the cash missing.

The suspect in that case is described as a very skinny white man, in his early 40s, standing 5’3” tall. He had short dark hair and was clean shaven. The next day, in the same area, a man knocked on a door at 6 a.m., claiming to be delivering newspapers and asking to use the phone, as his car had broken down. This thief swiped money from the victim’s purse before abandoning it in the washroom. The second suspect stands 5’10”, is about 30 years old, clean-shaven, and has an olive complexion. He was also described as very polite. Petty scams against senior citizens have been an ongoing problem for the Langley RCMP for some time. They have issued several warnings after scam artists have managed to extract money or have gotten into people’s homes to steal small items. Police are again warning people not to let strangers into homes. Asking for ID, setting scheduled times for visits by tradespeople, and not leaving valuables unattended are among good measures to take.

One thousand eight hundred children. Unfortunately, that’s the record-breaking number of kids needing help from the Langley Christmas Bureau this year. The charity had 750 families register for help this holiday season. “We’re the same [number of families] as last year,” said Leigh Castron, the co-director of the charity, “[with] more children, though.” As well, the bureau had 220 new families sign up, a signal to the volunteers that impact of the economic downturn has spread. “That’s quite a few more than last year,” she noted. “I know times are tougher for people.” She pointed to an emerging trend that’s been noticed. “We have had a few students come in, parents who have gone back to school [to try and change their lives],” she explained. As well, some of the clientele is getting older. “We had a lot of grandmothers raising grand kids,” she said. The bureau’s record-keeping shows changes in the nature of the clients. While most clients are English speakers, the range of mother tongues spoken by member of the community include Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, German, Czech, Russian, Karen, and more. In the past, about half the clients lived in Langley Township and half in the City. This year about 280 of the 750 families live in the City. In recent years the bureau has opened an Aldergrove office to accept registrations in addition to the Langley City office, and it has proven worthwhile. About 100 Langley residents applied at the Aldergrove office this year. Castron explained that the office makes it easier for people to apply. “A lot of them have to take the bus to see us,” she explained. To meet the extra demand this year, the bureau had to put out a last minute plea for help because donor numbers were down. The charity had to get the gifts out to all the community’s needy families by Dec. 17 when it closed its doors for 2010. “The community came through,” she said.

For most people, Christmas and its constellation of associated holidays are a frantic time. Time to shop for friends and family, then hunt for deals on Boxing Day. Time to hit the grocery store, maybe the liquor store, to get the ingredients for that perfect holiday feast. For others, unfortunately, it’s time to take advantage of the massive holiday shopping spree. Police everywhere are issuing their usual holiday warnings: lock your car, keep presents in the trunk, watch out for suspicious characters. No matter how careful everyone is, of course, someone’s Christmas memories will be tainted. They’ll remember the broken window, the missing presents, the ransacked car, the police report. We could rant and condemn thieves who cause such pain. But in the spirit of the season, instead we’ll ask them to make a change. No one grows up thinking they’ll spend the holiday season breaking and entering, trading stolen goods for a few dollars or a quick fix. It’s a demeaning, miserable existence, the result of very bad choices, some they made for themselves and some made for them, often at a young age. The good news is that, at this time of year, people are more willing than ever to help when a life needs to be turned around. Our communities are filled with organizations that reach out a helping hand, from government agencies to nonprofits like the Salvation Army’s shelters, to local churches, to food banks. Even the RCMP can help point someone in need of a new direction towards help. Lives have momentum, and turning one fuelled by drugs and crime must feel like trying to turn an ocean liner with a canoe paddle. But others have done it. There are those who know how to chart the course, how to steer through the sharp rocks. This Christmas, if you need help, please ask. If you are asked for help, please give. – M.C.

Provincial taxation
Massive HST grab upsetting
Dear Editor, The Harmonized Sales Tax is an absolutely massive tax grab by our provincial government. The provincial portion of the HST has been applied to 38 products and services which previously did not have Provincial Sales Tax. The used car I bought privately cost me $420 more. My home heating oil will be an additional $130 a year. My guess is that HST will cost me about $1,500 a year I am probably more upset about the way the Liberals dumped this massive tax increase on to us. Roll on, election time: they will not get my vote. Roger Layton, Langley
Maybe we could ask Abbotsford if they would like to adopt Aldergrove. The Township treats everyone west of 232nd Street like the poor cousins, and that frosts my socks. We pay taxes just like everyone else, and we are entitled to the same services and luxuries provided to the rest of the Township. They want to close down Aldergrove Lake, we’ve been denied a new pool, and we have to live under incredible water restrictions during the summer while people in Langley proper can still water their lawns and fill their pools. An election is coming, and I suggest our municipal representatives take heed of the political atmosphere. They are elected to represent the people, and the people want to be heard. Debbie Atkinson, Aldergrove [Note: A fuller version of this letter is online at www. langleyadvance.com.]
Odd Thoughts
Slagging Mayor Green hypocritical Dear Editor, Regarding mugshots and the Bateman Proposition, I must cry foul. Mr. Groeneveld’s Odd Thoughts [No room for mugshots in wallets, Dec. 14 Opinion, Langley Advance] strike me as hypocritical, in that he seems to join the chorus slagging Mayor Rick Green for including his photo on public announcements, disdaining such as shameless political self-promotion. At the same time, your paper features, on Page A2, yet another of Mary Polak’s paid, full-page ads in which she does her thing, blowing her own horn and posing, in this case for four (yes, count ’em: four!) photos. Who is going to believe that the cost of Ms. Polak’s ad, one way or the other, wasn’t covered by taxpayers? As for Councillor Jordan Bateman, it is simply not believable that his crusade is anything but a thinly disguised vendetta
TODAY’S FLYERS... in the
against the mayor. Acting on principle? I think not. Whatever Mr. Bateman’s motives, I will say that his own political aspirations are well-known, and that he is no stranger to posing and to self-promotion. One last lick: your use of the term “mugshot,” while cute in normal, witty discourse, carries a hint of criminal wrongdoing here. Hopefully, that was not your intention. I ask you to reflect on your perspective before wading further into this latest distasteful (some would say disgraceful) altercation in the Township office. Residents treated as second class Aldergrove – that’ll solve the $25,000 problem. Abbotsford is growing and developing to the east. Why should we shop in the Township when we are not appreciated as part of the Township? Why don’t they just pull the plug and shut down all services to Aldergrove and save a whole lot more money? They are close to that now.

The railways should cover the entire cost, but Canadian railways have more than 150 years experience in getting taxpayers to help pay for their construction costs, and they are very good at it. The bureaucrats in senior government departments went along with the arrangement, but our local elected representatives should have seen through the railway manipulation and just said, “No way.” In fact, they should insist we all save money and have the Delta Port rail traffic diverted to the CNR main line, which is already double-tracked, and the rail line through Langley City converted to light rail for an upgrade to our public transportation system. Doing it right would save the railways, transportation authorities, and the taxpayers billions of dollars, and we would end up with first-rate transportation systems. The people must be heard, or we will all end up losers. Eric J. Bysouth, Langley

Dear Editor, The recent publicity, public meetings, and discussions over the 192nd Street, 54th Avenue, and 196th Street road overpass project calls for some clarification as to why it is going ahead and why Langley/ Surrey taxpayers are picking up a big part of the cost. Authorities, including the railways, said it was being built there rather than where overpasses were really needed, on 200th Street and Langley Bypass, because of cost. But the real reason came out that the railway wanted it there to double-track the section so they could have two-mile trains passing each other. There was no way they could park a train blocking roads for onehalf to two hours. In fact, all the overpasses from Delta Port to the main CNR rail junction east of Fort Langley are being built to accommodate increased rail traffic to Delta Port and the need for double-tracking so the train traffic can pass other trains.

Father, son suspected in scam Disabled man seeks housing aid by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
A father and son duo arrested earlier this week tried to combine theft and fraud to steal from a Langley electronics store. The 44-year-old father walked into Best Buy on Dec. 6 at about 10 a.m., and spent a little while selecting items. When he had $1,400 in goods, he tried to saunter out the front door.
The loss-prevention officer on watch at the doors waved the man by. But an employee had been watching the man, and just before he left the store, she confronted him, said Const. Jillian Roberts of the Langley RCMP. The man tried to pass off the items by showing a receipt dated December 2008. When confronted, he ran out the doors. It turned out the loss-prevention officer on duty that day was the thief’s son. The thief later turned himself in, and the son was arrested for fraud. Both face court dates early next year.
able to contact the new owners to extend his rental agreement, he said. Finding a new place in winter, can be difficult for someone who needs a wheelchair, he said, adding, “Bathrooms and doorways and steps are an issue.” The vast majority of homes are unsuitable for a wheelchair user without massive and expensive renovations. Councillor Kim Richter made a motion to contact the property owners on Desrochers’ behalf. Mayor Rick Green suggested he talk to Zosia Ettenberg, head of PosAbilities, a non-profit that helps people with physical disabilities.
by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
A Langley man who uses a wheelchair asked Township council for help avoiding an upcoming eviction. Wayne Desrochers, a lifelong Langley resident, said he lives in a property on 80th Avenue in Willoughby. Desrochers owned it as part of his trucking and excavating business, and when he sold both business and property in the late 1990s, he arranged to stay as a tenant. Now the property has been sold and Desrochers must leave. He hasn’t been

Lowly Millionaires cash in on Chiefs Puck tourney Langley Chiefs centre Brandon Thompson (white) scored a shorthanded goal against the Quesnel Millionaires Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. The Millionaires won 5-4 in overtime.

Losing in overtime to the second-worst team in the British Columbia Hockey League was not the way the Langley Chiefs wanted to go into their Christmas break. A big Saturday night crowd of 2,756 at the Langley Events Centre saw the Chiefs squander a 3-0 lead before falling 5-4 in overtime to the Quesnel Millionaires. The Millionaires’ Skyler Smutek scored the winner 2:25 into the first overtime period. The victory improved Quesnel’s record to 10-25-1-2. Only the lowly Prince George Spruce Kings, at 7-32-0-2, have fewer wins and points than the Millionaires. The Chiefs, losers of four of their last five outings, dropped to 21-14-1-5. They don’t play again until Dec. 30, when they host Alberni Valley at the LEC.
Langley Advance files
Predictably, Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl was not happy with his team’s play. “I didn’t think we played very well,” Smyl said. “We made a lot of mental mistakes, we didn’t play as a unit, we had a lot of individualists, and we didn’t play like we need to play to be successful.” Asked if he verbally tore into his players following the game, Smyl answered, “We had a discussion about it.” It’s been an up-and-down season thus far for the Chiefs, who have enjoyed lengthy runs of success and a few letdowns since opening the season back on Sept. 10. Smyl remains confident in the players he has, and said that, to right the ship again, the Chiefs need to play as a
team and not as individuals. Langley looked in decent shape after Matt Ius’s powerplay goal gave the Chiefs a 4-2 lead 10:24 into the third period. The Millionaires rallied with two goals, including the tying tally off the stick of Chris Blessing with 10 seconds to go in regulation, to make it 4-4 and sent the game into overtime. The Chiefs saw a 3-0 lead slip away. Goals from Darnell Dyck in the first period and Kevin Tuohy and Brandon Thompson, shorthanded, in the second frame gave Langley a seemingly commanding lead. Quesnel scored goals a minute apart late in the middle frame to narrow their deficit to 3-2.
all about fun
The Millionaires outshot the Chiefs 35-29. Surrey Eagles 3, Chiefs 2 The Eagles erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring twice in the third period, and edged the Chiefs Friday at South Surrey Arena. Even though the Chiefs lost, Smyl liked the care level of his troops. “I thought we played decent there,” Smyl said. “We made two mistakes that cost us in the third period, but we put ourselves in a decent position to win the game. A couple of mistakes cost us, and they executed on a couple of chances that they got.” Trevor Gerling’s second of the night, on a powerplay, gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead at the 6:01 mark of the second period. Surrey’s Richard Vanderhoek tied the game 4:13 into the third period. Less than three minutes later, the Eagles’ Scott Holm netted the eventual game winner. Neither team found the net over the final 13 minutes and change as Surrey eked out a one-goal victory. The Eagles outshot the Chiefs 39-27, including 14-6 in the second period.

Olympians’ Metcalfe sets new Victoria meet mark LOSC member Hillary Metcalfe was three times gold, while breaking a meet record. Earlier this month, a number of Langley Olympians Swim Club (LOSC) athletes travelled to Victoria for the PCS Christmas Cracker Swim Meet. LOSC athletes swam to some impressive times, breaking a number of club records.
One swimmer, 12-year-old Hillary Metcalfe, set a new PCS meet record in the 11-12 girls 50-metre breaststroke event, with a time of 34.72. Ironically, this record was previously set in 2004 by another LOSC swimmer, Chelsey Salli. Over the course of the weekend, Metcalfe went on to break three more LOSC records in the 11-12 girls 200m IM (2:27.47), 200m freestyle (2:12.99), and 200m backstroke (2:30.60). In total, Metcalfe brought
home gold medals in the 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke to go along with silver medals in the 200m IM, 200m backstroke, 400m IM and 50m freestyle, and bronzes in the 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle. Also winning silver was 14year-old Martha Metcalfe in the 13-14 girls 400m IM and Robyn Nakano, 11, in the 200m fly, taking an impressive 48 seconds off her previous best time. Other swimmers who placed
in the top eight were: • Martha Metcalfe – 4th in 400m freestyle, 6th in 800 freestyle, and 7th in 200m fly and 200m breaststroke; • Chelsea Borrowdale, 11 – 5th in 400m IM, 6th in 200m breaststroke and 7th in 800m freestyle; • Robyn Nakano – 5th in 100m fly; • Hannah Weinkauf, 12 – 7th in 100m backstroke and 8th in 50m freestyle; and • Kennedy Douglas, 11 – 8th in 400m IM.

Organizer Murray Cameron hopes his small post-Christmas hockey tournament, played on a small ice surface, will become a big tradition in Langley in the years to come. The second annual Ann Mickelson three-on-three hockey tournament is scheduled to take place Dec. 27-28 on the National Hockey Training Centre’s 60’ x 120’ ice rink. The tournament is being called the Ann Mickelson Memorial in honour of a longtime hockey booster who passed away after a battle with ovarian cancer. “I thought it would be a nice tournament to do right after Christmas,” Cameron said. “Last year’s [tournament] was a lot of fun, other than the “We don’t fact one team want was a bit strong.” The tourney anyone to includes teams of take it too recreational hockey players aged seriously.” 35 and older, and Murray Cameron has some unique rules. Players under the age of 35 are not allowed to score unless they shoot using their opposite hands. A player can score a maximum of three goals per game but after that, their goals don’t count. Skaters of a lower skill set who are under the age of 35 are welcome to register. Each one-hour game will consist of three periods. A championship trophy will be awarded to the winning team. Cameron said the event is all about having fun and burning off some Christmas calories. “We are trying to keep it fun,” he said. “We don’t want people to pretend they’re the next Sidney Crosby. We don’t want anyone to take it too seriously.” To register as an individual or a team, email Cameron at moocat@shaw.ca, or call him at 778-241-7226. New West clips Lightning $75 In-Store Credit
The Lightning fell just short in a bid to win their final game of the season.
A Lightning storm ended last Saturday in New Westminster. The Langley Lightning U15 girls field lacrosse team played its final game of the season in cold, rainy conditions. The dreary weather affected the Lightning’s play as they fell 10-8 to New Westminster. New West opened the scoring 25 seconds into the game. Jaylene Soegard was first to strike for Langley with a great run from midfield to score over the goalkeeper’s head.
This just seemed to upset New West as the hosts kept coming forward to sweep away Langley’s midfield and defense. The Lightning had trouble finishing their chances early on. Soegard was the first to hit the post, followed by Shannon Walker who bounced the ball off the crossbar. Late in the opening half, Soegard scored her second of the game. After a chat with coach Trevor Andres, the Lightning looked like a different team at the start of the second half. They came out ready to give New West a run for its money. Five minutes into the half, Mackenzie Rolland found the net with a low shot. Alysha Morrison then
made a strong run from the opposite end of the field to take New West defence by surprise. Her marker was followed by a pair of goals by Ashley Heisler that made her teammates even more determined to make a game of it. Lady luck was at it again as New West put two more goals away, stretching its lead further from the Lightning’s grasp. Langley defiantly pushed its way through the very tight New West defence to allow Sarah Ferguson to make a superb run down from midfield, before she put a well-placed shot behind the goalkeeper. Fight as they did, the final goal from Soegard wasn’t enough for the Lightning to win their final match of the season.

‘Great weekend of racing’ – coach A couple of swimmers achieved their qualifying times at this meet, including Kyla Barton, who earned her Age Group National Qualifying time, Kelley MacDonald, who got her Provincial AAA time in the 200m breaststroke, and Emily d’Entremont, who achieved her provincial AA time. Head coach Brian Metcalfe said of his swimmers, “We had such a great week-
