Langley Fine Arts School students lost no time in putting the Chief Sepass Theatre back to work. The theatre, closed due to a Halloween fire, was reopened for the Phoenix Concert Jan. 7. Over 24 hours Friday and into early Saturday, students and others put on a show, with several performances open to the public. “We had over 250 different performances with our students, many alumni and some guests performing,” noted principal Jon Bonnar. And the performers enjoyed crowd numbers seasoned artists would envy. “There was a full house for many of the hours with over 3,000 people in attendance over the 24 hours. The spirit exploded out of the theatre. You could feel how much appreciation there is for this space,” he noted.

Trustee hopefuls tested at forum

Four candidates standing for election on Jan. 15 are willing to take on the job of dealing with Langley School District’s $13.5 million budget shortfall. The candidates for a single trustee seat in Saturday’s byelection had a chance to sell themselves at an all-candidates forum on Thursday evening at Brookswood Secondary School. The new trustee will serve about 11 months, until the next general election, in November. The trustees made their pitches in front of a crowd of about 60 people, addressing them in the order their names will appear on the ballot. Cecelia Reekie, Brian Leonard, and Ed Wood are first-time candidates, while Hattie Hogeterp has served before, and faced the toughest questioning by the audience for having been on the previous board when the district’s financial problems started. Hogeterp said she went back over her budget documents and found nothing to show the prob-

lems, since the district financial staff didn’t discover the problems while she was a trustee. When pressed, she said that the community needs to move on. “The next 11 months are not going to be easy,” she noted. “…We have to keep the children at the centre of everything the board does.”

Reekie said the problems of the district show that the culture has to change. She lobbied for better consult between board and stakeholders, but acknowledged that there are difficult cuts coming. Wood, who works in facilities management for Vancouver, said the local district shouldn’t have to bear the financial burden.

“The provincial government should look after the debt,” he commented. “It’s a simple as that.” The resident of Langley for 25 years also advocated for better long-term planning and facility management because it saves money in the long run.

Township residents head to the polls on Saturday to vote for a new school trustee. They’ll choose from four candidates seeking to fill the Township trustee seat. Under provincial voting laws, two Langley trusteeships are chosen by Langley City with the remaining five elected by Township voters. As the vacant seat had been held by a Township representative,

Joan Bech, before her resignation, it must be refilled by the Township. The polls open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with voting at five locations: Aldergrove Community Secondary, 26850 29th Ave.; D.W. Poppy Secondary, 23752 52nd Ave.; Langley Fundamental Middle/Secondary, 21250 42nd Ave.; R.C. Garnett Elementary, 7096 201st St.; and Walnut Grove Secondary, 8919 Walnut Grove Dr. Advance polls were available on Jan. 5 and 7. Chief elections officer Susan Palmer said 79 people voted in advance. Voters must be Canadian citizens, 18 years or older of as Jan. 15, have lived in B.C. for at least six months prior to the

election, and residents or property owners in the Township for at least the past 30 days. The Township bases its voter rolls on the provincial election list, but people not on the list can register to vote at the polls on Jan. 15. To register on site, people must have at least two pieces of identification, at least one of which must have a signature, to prove their identity and residency. Non-resident property owners are eligible to vote. If not on the voters list, they must also present two pieces of ID and proof of property ownership. Each non-resident owner can only vote once, even if he or she owns more than one piece of property in the Township.

Trinity Western University’s women’s basketball team lost twice to the University of Victoria Vikes over the weekend, as the Lady Spartans fell to 1-15 on the season.

The Spartans battled but fell just short in a 61-57 loss to the hometown Vikes Saturday at McKinnon gym on the campus of the University of Victoria. On Friday, a strong fourth quarter by the Vikes gave the Victoria squad a 71-57 victory to open the second half of the Canada West season.

Langley Township has a new fire chief, with Chief Stephen Gamble taking over for outgoing top firefighter Doug Wade. Wade announced his retirement last year. The official handover ceremony was held on Jan. 7 at the Murrayville Fire Hall, the central hall for the Township. Wade and Gamble were escorted into the building by an honour guard of firefight-

ers, to a ceremony emceed by assistant fire chief Bruce Ferguson. Department chaplain Mark Davis, Mayor Rick Green, IAFF local 4550 president Andy Hewitson, and paid-on call firefighter Mike Arnott all spoke of Wade’s tenure. A white chief’s helmet was passed from Wade to Gamble as a final gesture to mark the shift.

Robert Lee said it may take some time, but he intends to see a new store rise from the ashes of last week’s fire at the Fort Langley IGA. “It’s devastating,” said Lee, the longtime owner of the store. Last Tuesday morning, flames tore through the store, which has been a keystone of downtown Fort Langley since the 1970s. Within a few hours, the store was a pile of charred rubble. Lee and his extended family have managed that store and others in Langley for many years. “We’re still hanging in there, I guess,” Lee told the Langley Advance this week. He’s going through the process of working with insurance companies and dealing with the aftermath of a major business fire. In the meantime, he’s trying to make sure the employees of the store are looked after. “We’ve tried to find them jobs,” Lee said. Several have already been found work, he said. Lee couldn’t talk about the ongoing police investigation into the cause of the fire. Last week, the RCMP said it appears someone tried to break into the store, and may have started the fire by attempting to cut through bars over a window. There is no timeline for when a new store might be built on the site, but Lee said he does intend to return to Fort Langley. “We have every intention to do that,” he said.

Workers spent much of last week clearing away rubble from the IGA site in Fort Langley.

South Langley residents living near 232nd Street will have to find a new route, as a stretch of the road has been closed thanks to flooding. Heavy rains on Thursday caused a washout near a dip in the road over Murray Creek, said Township roads manager Terry Veer. Part of the bank near the road has destabilized and there is a concern that more of the slope, including the road itself, could wash away. The entire section of 232nd Street between 32nd and 24th Avenues has been closed to outside traffic, Veer said. Local residents can still get in and out, but they will not be able to get through. On Monday, Township engineers had placed concrete barricades around the affected dip. A geotechnical engineer had been called in to look at the site. It’s uncertain how long it will take to shore up or repair the road. This is not the first time that a major Township road has been affected by flooding. An entire bridge on 248th Street was washed out by torrential rain in 2005. It took months to rebuild the bridge.

Young Vancouver Canucks fans received quite a thrill recently when the National Hockey League team’s mascot Fin visited Langley Twin Rinks for a public skate supporting the Ride For Hope fundraiser and Canucks for Kids Fund. Admission to “Skate with Fin” was by donation, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to the Canucks for Kids Fund in conjunction with Ride for Hope. The Ride for Hope was developed to raise awareness and funds for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. Covering more than 200 kilometres, the summer bike ride starts in Surrey and finishes in Hope. The 2010 ride raised $84,432,47.

Marks said the incident was a good example of residents being alert and helping the police. Charges of impaired driving, possession of stolen property, and prohibited driving are being recommended to prosecutors, Marks said. A further charge of driving with a blood alcohol level above .08 may be laid, depending on an expected blood sample analysis.

Officers found about 600 pot plants, two shotguns and a rifle, and a natural gas generator worth about $80,000 to $100,000. The generator was running air conditioning units, and special venting equipment. The building was designed to mask the distinctive smell of the growing pot. Four men in their 30s to 40s have been arrested and face charges, including theft of natural gas, Grainger said. Bech’s resignation leads to by-election

In September, Langley School Board chair Joan Bech suddenly resigned. Though her family was selling their Langley farm and moving, Bech had offered to commute from the Sunshine Coast to Langley, to continue on the board and save the district the need for a by-election so close to the November 2011 general election. She said her offer was rejected. “Individual trustees have called for my resignation, foreshadowing another needless conflict that would have taken away from the board’s ability to serve students,” she said, alluding to divisiveness that had afflicted the board since the previous term. Eligible Township voters are now faced with a $50,000-$75,000 byelection to put a trustee in place for about 10 months. Joan Bech Her resignation and by-election former school board chair costs were among reasons cited by the District Parent Advisory Council when it announced it would lobby to remove the whole board and replace it with a provincial bureaucrat. As Bech was a Township representative on the Langley board, Langley Township oversees the election on behalf of the school district. Township councillors got into a debate about by-election scheduling at an October meeting. They wanted the election held as soon as possible, before Christmas, and suggested lobbying the province to move it up. But in the end, the by-election was scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 15. Running for the seat vacated by Bech are Cecelia Reekie, Ed Wood, Hattie Hogeterp, and Brian Leonard. On voting day, eligible Township voters can cast their ballots at Aldergrove Community Secondary, D.W. Poppy Secondary, Langley Fundamental Middle/ Secondary, R.C. Garnett Elementary and Walnut Grove Secondary. Let’s all stand up to bullies The 16-year-old girl who was raped during a rave in Pitt Meadows last year showed remarkable strength this week. As two more suspects were arrested – one each from Langley and Maple Ridge – she released a statement to the public. “Thank you to everyone who has been there to help me through this terrible ordeal,” she wrote. “But to the people who did not support me, who called me names, who spread lies about me: Thank you, because you made me much stronger than I’ve ever been before.” What this girl has endured is appalling. She was the victim of the revolting crime of rape – compounded as pictures of the attack spread through Facebook. Finally, she had the indignity of hearing classmates question whether she was really a victim at all. Why do so many people still blame the victims of rape? Some people seem to love attacking the victim, with slurs like these: It must have been her fault. She shouldn’t have been dressed like that. She should have known better than to go there. She was asking for it. She probably enjoyed it. It’s hard to think of a more hateful series of lies, but apparently they are still common currency, among both adults and teenagers living in our communities. Some people cannot understand simple concepts, like rape, consent, or the word “no.” Rapists are cowardly scum who invariably prey on people who are weaker than they are. Their victims are not simply weak physically, because they are smaller or younger than their attackers (though they often are). They are weak because centuries of sexism and misogyny have made them less likely to be believed or taken seriously. We can only estimate the number of rapes never reported to police. We will never know how many are concealed due to shame – or how many victims choose to avoid being slandered, bullied, and ignored. The victim in this case has shouldered more than the usual share of garbage and pain. We hope some of it rebounds on those who really deserve it: the attackers, and the people who would excuse them of a heinous crime. - M.C.

Suits scare opponents That artist is not one to just rest on a couch Dear Editor,

Don’t let SLAPP suits gag landfill opposition in Langley. Big-city legal tactics have invaded Langley. Some residents are having second thoughts about responding to letters sent by the Township to neighbouring properties asking if they have any concerns regarding a fill proposal. Although they fear adverse effects to drainage patterns or increased traffic in the neighbourhood, they now have a greater fear that their opposition will be leaked to the fill site developer and result in legal bills to defend a SLAPP suit. A SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) is a lawsuit intended to silence opposition by burdening them with the cost of a legal defence. The goal of the suit is to stop the criticism and intimidate others, not to win the suit. The plaintiff (fill site developer), of course, tells the court that the action is to protect his interest, not to silence opposition. The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, section 22, deals with personal privacy. When information is released – personal information such as names, home addresses and home phone numbers are removed. My experience with the Township legal department is that they are diligent in this aspect. Other agencies, for example the ALC, get failing marks (in my opinion). Letters of opposition should be careful to deal with personal concerns only and not bash the developer or landfill in general. It is your legal right to comment on how the proposed fill site will affect you. The Township may not agree with you, but being wrong does not mean you are liable. You may not defame the proponent of a landfill proposal or deliberately attempt to damage his business. But you can write or say things that are true (if you can prove them true). Don’t succumb to intimidation. Let the Township know your concerns.

It is most shocking to hear that our community spirited IGA may have been burnt down as a result of vandalism. We have lost one of the most appreciated and necessary assets of Fort Langley. Robert, Peter, their family, and staff have been wonderful supportive community members. They have not only been the source of supplies for the village, but have also been our “friends” for many years. Every time there was a community event the IGA was there with support and donations. The store has carried on the original “spirit” of togetherness that was started so many years ago when the village grew up around the old Fort. The community of Fort Langley has been held together by people like those who run the IGA. We look forward to seeing the store rebuilt soon.

As a young boy growing up I was fascinated by the great Yogi Berra. He was a world- class catcher for the New York Yankees and later, a championship manager and a world-class “mangler” of the English language. He would always come up with a gem, like, “Baseball is 50% mental and the rest is in your mind”. My favorite one, though, was the phrase he uttered to reporters during a losing streak, just following a 10 game slump earlier in the season... He was asked his thoughts on it and he promptly replied, “It’s déjà vu all over again”. I went crazy for a whole summer trying to figure that one out. I was reminded of this last year when I met one of our firm’s twentysomething clients who had just managed to buy her own home and remarked to me that, as difficult as it was for her financially, her real concern was for her potential future children, and how they would never be able to afford a home. She believed that they would be “priced out” of the real estate market. She had purchased a brand new 1 bedroom and den condo for $189,000 from a builder on a “special pricing weekend” and we had been able to get the builder to pay the GST ( I did say it was earlier last year !) She had put down $10,000 as a down payment and our mortgage broker had arranged a mortgage for her of $179,000 to make up the balance at an interest rate of 3.95% for five years with a 30 year term for a monthly mortgage payment of $783.77. Combined with the monthly strata fee of $150.00 per month, her total monthly cost of purchasing and maintaining her own home is about $ 950/month plus property taxes. I thought back to early 1981 when I sold her then twenty something parents their first home. It was a small 3 bedroom house of about 1000 square feet with no basement on a 40 x 100 foot lot in the old section of Bakerview just across the Langley border in Surrey. They were anxious to start a family and own their own home where they could raise their family. They paid $120,000 for this home at the top of the market. We managed to “shoehorn” them into the house with a $108,000 mortgage at 16%. They raised a $12,000 down payment from their parents and we were able to convince the seller to buy down the mortgage to 12% for the first two years of their five year term on the 25 year amortization. This cost the seller about $8000; almost the same as the GST the builder had to pay to sell his condo to our new client. This allowed them to qualify for the mortgage with monthly payments of only $1114.45. After two years their payments rose to $1414.24 plus property taxes. In addition they would have to spend money and effort on the upkeep of their house every month. So our newest client pays $ 950/month for her home with a $10,000 down payment whereas her parents paid $1114.45/month plus maintenance with a $12,000 down payment 30 years ago. Of course this is 2010 and everything’s different now. Today we have a property purchase tax although our client was able to qualify for an exemption and did not have to pay this tax. There was no such tax in her parent’s day just like there really wasn’t much in the way of condos to purchase in 1981. Most young people now prefer to buy condos for their first home and pay the condo fee to have someone else look after the place. They pretty well restrict their upkeep to mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing once a week. If our newest client wanted to duplicate what her parents did 30 years ago she’d have to pay $430,000 for a similar 8-12 year old home. She would need a $21,000 down payment and her mortgage payment would be $1788.67/month. $ 675/month more than her parents paid and her down payment would be $9,000 more than her parents had to scrape up. Of course wages are a lot higher than they were 30 years ago. And if she were wondering where to get the extra $9,000 in down payment, I know a fifty something couple whose kids are all grown up and who are sitting on a $430,000 piece of real estate with no mortgage that might be willing to help. Because, after all, when I sold her parents that home 29 years ago, they remarked to me that, as difficult as it was, their real concern was for their children and how they would never be able to afford a home. They believed that they would be “priced out” of the real estate market! Omigosh!! Old Yogi was right--- It IS déjà vu--- all over--- AGAIN !

Neither rain, nor hail, nor wind, nor cold, nor the North Fraser Selects stopped Langley United’s U13 boys gold soccer team from extending its seasonlong unbeaten streak Saturday. Mother Nature threw nearly everything in her arsenal down on the teams at Willoughby turf, including hail pellets that pelted the players during the early afternoon match.

In spite of the inclement weather conditions, the host Langley United Youth Soccer Association squad came away with a convincing 5-1 victory to run its overall record to 12-0-0. Langley head coach Scott Howey thought his lads adjusted well to the extreme changes in weather and looked to get the ball under control and move it around. “Credit to the other team who worked hard to close us down and make life difficult,” Howey said, “but we continued to move the ball quickly and effectively and were able to break them down and create some good scoring opportunities that we capitalized on.”

Langley Eagles hockey teams played the part of Grinch, as far as their opponents were concerned, at a Christmas tournament in Chilliwack. Members of the Langley Minor Hockey Association’s peewee A1 and A3 Eagles teams took part in the 53rd annual Chilliwack PeeWee Hockey Jamboree between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Both Langley teams did exceptional jobs representing LMHA with the A1 Eagles team going undefeated before winning their division title against the SeaFair Islanders A1 team. KING, Alfred Herbert

Passed away peacefully at George Derby Centre, Burnaby, December 30th after a short illness. Born January 7, 1918 in Vancouver. His family moved to Langley when he was 6 months old. He met his wife Millie in Langley and they lived in Langley, Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Surrey and back to Langley where they were honoured as Langley Pioneers. Alf is predeceased by his wife Millie, brother Jim, sisters Flora and Doris, son Gary, granddaughters Maria and Andrea. He is survived by son Wayne (Ann), daughter Linda (Michael), daughter-in-law Naty, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The family thanks the kind and caring staff at George Derby Centre, Burnaby. He will be missed and remembered fondly. A memorial service at Newlands Golf Club, 21025 - 48th Avenue, Langley, B.C., Friday, January 14, from 2-4 pm.
