It’s official – fire hall one has a new leader The white chief’s helmet was handed off to the new firefighter in charge. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Langley City welcomed its new permanent fire chief, as Rory Thompson officially took up the post on Friday. Thompson, who was lured to the City’s spot from the BC Justice Institute, is taking over from interim fire chief Jim McIntee. Thompson was handed the white chief’s helmet in a brief ceremony at the fire hall. Thompson said he was thrilled to be taking over the department, noting its good reputation. What all emergency personnel share is a desire to make the world better, Thompson said.

Matthew Claxton/Langley Advance

New City fire chief Rory Thompson (left) accepted the white helmet from interim chief Jim McIntee. Deputy Chief Peter Methot observed the handover. He also commended McIntee, who is heading for a new life on Vancouver Island, where he will run a fishing lodge. Other firefighters also paid tribute to McIntee’s work over the past two years.

The “interim” chief has served ever since Jim McGregor retired, and McIntee’s tenure has seen a number of changes and transitions. McIntee got a little choked up as he said goodbye to the ser-

vice he’s led since 2009. “Goodbyes are tough,” the outgoing chief said. Deputy Chief Peter Methot said Thompson takes over a fire service with more than 50 years of history and a deep commitment to community service. “They take pride in serving, and it’s been that way for many years,” Methot said. City Mayor Peter Fassbender said Thompson was joining a family as much as he was taking up a new job. He noted the recent accidental death of City firefighter Ron Dunkley. “That’s when families really come together,” he said. Langley City’s fire service is a composite service, with a core of full-time firefighters, along with some paid on-call workers. It began as a volunteer service in the 1950s when the City seceded from the larger Langley Township.

Kids meet hockey heroes by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A group of more than 30 youngsters headed from Langley to Vancouver on Friday, en route to a meeting with the Vancouver Canucks. Young children and teenagers who skate with help from the PuCKS program got a chance to take a trip to Rogers Arena. The students were bursting with excitement as they prepared to set off Friday morning. “Every time they play, I watch,” said Sherlawla, a Langley Secondary student about to board the bus. The students only found out earlier in the week that they would have the chance to take the trip and meet the team. “It’s going to be awesome,” said Hteeluepaw, another student getting

Plan for power

As part of his bid for re-election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has vowed to dismantle what may be the world’s most progressive, democratic campaign finance laws. Harper pledged that he would make the elimination of taxpayer subsidies to federal political parties a priority. On its surface, it doesn’t sound like a bad plan. Who wants their tax dollars to help politicians advertise? In reality, it’s a terrible idea. Canada’s election finance rules exist to protect Canadians. Candidates and parties have strict limits on how much they can spend; individuals have low caps on what they can give (about $1,000), and unions and corporations can’t donate at all. The largest single source of funding for candidates is the subsidy, defined as $1.75 (or thereabouts) per year for each vote their party won in the previous election. The effect is that candidates are served better by pleasing voters than by pleasing private interests. Taking $1.75 out of each voter’s tax bill to ensure the balance is spent for our benefit is actually a pretty good deal. Harper wants to undo this, and it’s obvious why. Reverting to a reliance on private donors is clearly most helpful to parties that serve the interests of wealthy individuals and organizations. Harper’s plan is about giving his party an edge. It should be rejected.

Drugs need watching

MPs Terence Young, Ujjal Dosanjh and Jean Crowder say they want core funding preserved for the Therapeutics Initiative, an internationally acclaimed drug watchdog based at UBC. The politicians from three federal political parties were able to agree because their cause is so obviously just. The provincial government responded to recommendations by an industry-dominated Pharmaceutical Task Force by giving TI contracts worth $150,000 to conduct clinical evidence reviews. At the same time, the MPs noted, it also slashed TI’s budget by $450,000. The MPs argue that TI’s independent drug assessment is necessary to ensure the safety of new drugs before they reach the market. The budget cuts could cost lives.

Traffic laws

Get trucks back under control

Dear Editor, There needs to be more and very strict enforcement on all roads in B.C., not just on 16th Avenue [Dump trucks terrify drivers, Jan. 21 Letters, Langley Advance]. And that refers to all truck drivers, not just the dump trucks. Long gone are the days of the professional truck driver, replaced in recent years with a bunch of morons who think they own the road. I see it on Highway One every day while driving to and from work: reckless disregard for the safety of others on the road. Those yahoos in their semi-trucks drive as if they are in sports cars, weaving in and out of both lanes, passing other trucks on hills, driving in the left lane for kilometres on end (slow traffic is supposed to keep right). I’ve seen them in the Fraser Canyon and on the Coquihalla Highway, driving slowly

up the hills, only to speed down the other side as if trying to make up time. They do not move over to the right to allow other traffic to pass. The attitude appears to be, “We move the goods you buy, so we own the road; safety be damned.” It is about time the police started issuing fines to these potential killers. There should be no tolerance for any driving infractions. Zero. Speed at anything 15 km/h over the speed limit, and you park them for three days – and add further fines for additional infractions. Other traffic infractions? Serve them up with heavy fines. We need to have the public stand up and say, “No more.” Get these yahoos under control. R. Jones, Aldergrove

Letter lacks values writer espouses Dear Editor, I found the letter from Fiona Miller [Thanks – to most candidates, Jan. 18 Letters, Langley Advance] to be quite disturbing. Other people have already commented on the personal sleight to Hattie Hogeterp, but there is a bigger issue here. Political vitriol is

rampant in our system, and I believe that the effects are far-reaching and detrimental. Honorable, qualified individuals may decide not to run for public office, for fear of personal assaults and public criticism. The voting public loses interest in the electoral process, as the dis-

High road sticks to nice

Dear Editor, It’s strange how not saying something can cause so much backlash. Perhaps the headline [Thanks – to most candidates, Jan. 18 Letters, Langley Advance] had a lot to do with the hostile reaction. The letter-writer chose to thank the winner of the by-election. Nothing wrong there. She choose to thank two candidates who had the courage to run for the first time, and ask them to come back for another try in November when there will be a fairer chance for them. Nothing wrong there, either. Just before the by-election, the Advance did a story [Election complaint laid, Jan. 14, Langley Advance] about how Hattie Hogeterp received an unfair advantage provided by school trustee Rod Ross. As Fiona Miller’s letter was thanking others for running campaigns to be proud of, perhaps she thought it would be the high road not to mention a campaign with questionable tactics. As our mothers say, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. L. Fletcher, Langley

cussion of important issues becomes lost in the stream of propaganda and meaningless political banter. The tone of Ms. Miller’s letter is in stark contrast to the values and ideas espoused in the by-election, such as working together in a respectful manner and working toward a new “culture” on the school board. If Ms. Miller’s letter is representative of a new culture, I have grave misgivings that the hope for respect and harmony on the school board will be realized. She purports that the students and community will be served with “integrity,” but that value is not evident in her letter. I hope discourse in the future will be conducted with decorum. To serve our children well, we need to demonstrate behaviour we wish them to emulate. Blatantly ignoring the efforts of a candidate who has devoted so much of her time and energy to the Langley school community is not behaviour I would wish anyone to emulate. extremely inappropriate, lacked objectivity, and gave an impression of bias. If the mayor or any other elected officials make mistakes, it is more reasonable to try to work together to solve the situation internally, rather than contribute to making our municipality a laughing stock. I am amazed, actually shocked, by the lack of courtesy and maturity shown by certain long term councillors, who certainly have also made mistakes, one of which is the denigration and undermining of the office of mayor. Dear Editor, Once again, as long time citizens of Langley Township, we are more than embarrassed and disappointed in our elected council whose mandate is to work together in the democratic process on behalf of the people who voted them into office. Where is the understanding and courtesy commonly given to a new member of council, whether a mayor or councillor? If someone new comes into a family and makes mistakes, the family defends him or her to the public, and tries to cooperate and put on a good face. Airing dirty laundry in public is a sign of immaturity. It sets a bad example, is insulting to taxpayers, and reduces confidence in elected officials. The expensive report from consultants, Berry and Habkirk [Consultants blame mayor, Jan. 21, Langley Advance], seemed

Teams in Training

Alzheimer’s disease

Two local women are training for a marathon in Rome and fundraising to fight cancer.

Baby Boomers need to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and its symptoms, according to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. The conclusion comes after a national study on boomer knowledge about the disease, which will be striking more people as the boomer population ages. Boomers make up almost 30 per cent of the B.C. population. “The gap in awareness in B.C. is sounding alarm bells as to whether our largest population is prepared for the rising tide of dementia that is ahead,” said Rose Puszka, the society’s Langley support and education coordinator. Respondents to the national survey were unfamiliar with controllable risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s disease, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and chronic depression. As well, one quarter could not name the early signs of the disease and less than half could name the later stage symptoms except for memory loss. “This indicates a general lack of awareness of lifealtering changes such as hallucinations and complete dependency on others for basic care,” she said. Langley residents can take the test at www.alzheimerbc. org/testyourknowledge.aspx. “Awareness and education are the cornerstones for risk reduction, particularly since there is yet no cure or treatment to stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease,” Puszka said. “People need to take care of their brain health. We need to work together to support those who are already on the dementia journey and to find the causes and cure for this devastating disease.” She explained that the risk level for Boomers doubles every five years after age 65. “We want everyone, especially those 40 and older, to learn about Alzheimer’s disease, know the warning signs, and reduce their risk by making simple lifestyle changes.”

They fight blood cancers by lacing up Tested by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

It’s easy to find excuses not to exercise and not to participate in Teams in Training, a leukemia and lymphoma fundraiser that involves exercising. Kathy Friesen kept putting off getting active until she challenged herself to run a marathon by 50 years of age as part of her bucket list. That’s about the same time the Willoughby resident heard about Teams in Training in 2009 – but out came the excuses. Still curious, she attended an information session about the group that fundraises to cure blood cancers. “Oh, that’s a lot of money to fundraise, and a lot of work,” she thought of the $6,000-per-person goal. “The next day I received a call from a friend telling me that my friend was in hospital and had been diagnosed with a rare type of leukemia and was very sick,” she said. The school counsellor decided a little bit of sweat and discomfort (such as high temperatures at a Hawaii run and a torn meniscus and LC in her knee) is a small price to help find a cure. “Two weeks almost to the day that I told her I was running in her honour, Louise passed away and I have never looked back,” Friesen said. Friesen now runs 40-50 kilometres per week and has done two previous Teams in Training (TNT) marathons. She has teamed up with another TNT runner, Langley’s Gail Silva, a nurse at Coquitlam’s North Fraser Pre-Trial Centre. They are $5,550 shy of their $12,000 fundraising goal and will be taking part in the international Teams in Training run in Rome March 20. Despite a back injury, Silva has been running since 2008 and has competed in three half marathons and will tackle a full mara-

They are looking forward to meeting TNT participants from around the world and are holding several fundraisers to achieve their goal by March 1. “Once you’re running, you spend a lot of time talking,” Friesen explained. Friesen and Silva know this will be unlike any running they’ve done before. The route starts at the Colosseum and goes through cobblestone streets for about 13 miles.

Friesen are participating through the B.C./Yukon Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. All the money raised in B.C. stays in this province, Friesen noted. To reach their goal of raising $12,000, the pair are using any means they can. Friesen’s mom has crocheted plastic shopping bags into purses and the two women have an account at the Willowbrook Bottle Depot if people want to turn in their cans and bottles. Another account is being set up at the Walnut Grove depot. They will also pick

Silva joked that they are busy fundraising, so she’s only going to learn a few Italian phrases: “Please, thank you, and do you have any Tylenol.” Silva is taking part to honour uncles and a grandmother who have died of cancer and aunts who have battled the disease. up bottle donations. As well, the women have created Cooking up a Cure, a $15 cookbook that features tried and true family recipes as well as some information about Teams in Training. More than 60 have been ordered already and the two women hope to make it an annual fundraiser, adding to the cookbook in the coming years as well as sharing it with other local Teams in Training participants to help with their fundraising efforts. As well, the women have

made Valentine’s-themed popcorn gift packages and are selling those for minimum $2 donations. Silva has Purdy’s chocolate bars for sale, and there are also rubber TNT bracelets. The pair will be at Mustangs Pub and Grill (188th Street and Fraser Highway) selling 50/50 tickets on the evening Feb. 5 and during Superbowl on the afternoon of Feb. 6. “We’ll do just about anything,” Friesen said about their fundraising determination. “I’ll even mow somebody’s lawn.”

The Langley community group, You’ve Gotta Have Friends, is hosting a series of conversation cafes in each of the next three months, aimed at getting people to engage with others in their community. The three events will explore how people can make a difference in the world, globally, locally, and individually, said organizer Janice McTaggart. “We see January to March as the dark months of the year, and it’s a good chance to get people together,” she said. You’ve Gotta Have Friends is a grassroots initiative for the Langley community, with its office just around the corner from the Morning Glory Cafe where the events will be held, McTaggart explained. Hundreds of people have come through the doors since the McBurney Lane office open in September 2006. The conversation cafes will be primarily about raising awareness about community belonging and inclusion, McTaggart said. “Each evening will begin with several speakers who will talk about what motivated and inspired them to take action around certain issues and causes,” she added.

You’ve Gotta Have Friends organizer Janice McTaggart stood in front of the Morning Glory Cafe, the spot for upcoming conversation cafes.

There will be three speakers at each cafe who will speak for around

10 minutes, followed by mingling at the various tables. The first event, Making a Difference in the World, is set for tonight (Jan. 25), from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Guest speakers include Mary Martini talking about food substitutes, Terry Smith who will discuss Rotary’s global vision and projects in which the organization is involved, and Eef Hoedemaker will speak about a girls school in India. The second event, Making a Difference Locally in Our Own Community, is on Feb. 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Confirmed to speak is Eli Bryan Nelson, who hosts the Food Bank Tuesday music night at McBurney Coffee House, and Ted Kane of Citizen’s Care Organization. The last event, Making a Difference on an Individual Level, will take place on March 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Laurel Archer, who is involved with the Langley Association for Community Living, is scheduled to speak, as well as host Janice McTaggart about assisting homeless in Langley. You’ve Gotta Have Friends helped a homeless man named Mark Hindmarch, who has multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair, get permanent shelter. All events will take place at the Morning Glory Cafe, at 20488 Fraser Hwy. The cafe has a seating capacity of 50 people. Light refreshments will be served, so organizers are asking for $5 or entry by donation. For information, contact Janice McTaggart or Pat Weibelzahl at 604533-6546, or email: yghf@telus.net.

Walnut Grove is sometimes referred to as a rural setting

with urban amenities, and is located in Northwestern area of the Langley Township, a suburban community, with a population of approximately 23,500 residents, and over 700 businesses. Walnut Grove is a mosaic of:

Virginia’s World Was Shrinking

Please browse the Walnut Grove Business website at www.wgba.ca. Here you will find a business ready to serve you and your family.

01257996

Langley Olympians Swimmers regularly compete at the Walnut Grove Community Centre’s pool. Dozens of young swimmers competed at a recent meet held just before Christmas, including the young girl seen here coming up for air.

The area offers an incredible assortment of shopping opportunities from name brand stores, to smaller merchants offering local artisan wares and gifts for the festive season. A vast majority of the local business owners also reside in the area, and the recently formed Walnut Grove Business Association is a testimonial how well local businesses can work together, and support each other by encouraging each merchant to consider purchasing from each other.

Now she has so much to look forward to When Virginia was on her own, she lost touch with people. Aside from the holidays and occasional outings with her family, she spent a lot of time at home alone. Now that Virginia lives in a Chartwell residence, she is surrounded by people with similar interests and experiences. Her new friends are quickly becoming her best friends.

1951: Electric company bill in dispute Forty Years Ago

JANUARY 28, 1971

Langley’s history, as recorded in the files of the Langley Advance. Seventy Years Ago

JANUARY 23, 1941

• Peanut butter was on special, at 49 cents for a four-pound tin. Ladies dresses were available at 69 cents each.

Sixty Years Ago

JANUARY 25, 1951

• The Langley branch of the War Brides Ass’n. cut its meetings to once a month. • Langley Council refused to pay a $1,000 B.C. Electric Co. bill for two power poles that had toppled in a storm 11 months earlier. Council claimed roadwork by a provincial crew had weakened the poles, but B.C. Electric countered that the provincial crew was working for the municipality.

Fifty Years Ago

JANUARY 26, 1961

• After sitting idle for two years after the opening of a new municipal hall, the old hall on Old Yale Road was being torn down to make way for housing. Among the salvage from the old hall were timbers more than 30 feet in length, without a single knot in them.

• Six people survived the collapse of a three-storey chicken barn. Five young people and their 51-year-old manager had been catching chickens inside, and some were trapped in the debris for some time.

Thirty Years Ago

JANUARY 28, 1981

The school was to open Sept. 1, but already the contractor announced it would be weeks late, and at least one wing would not be available to students until December. Do you know these people? Above is one of hundreds of old, unlabeled Langley Advance photos, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, “filed” in boxes in a storeroom, and which we have recently provided to Langley Centennial Museum. Many of the photos could be a treasure trove of local history – if they can be identified. If you have information about this photo – who’s in the picture, or when it was taken, for example – please email info@langleymuseum.org, or contact us at the Langley Advance, and we’ll ensure it gets to museum archivists. trustees feared that would slow the Walnut Grove project even further. When the same contractor built Alex Hope Elementary, the initial Sept. 1, 1989, opening date for that project was postponed several times, until it finally opened in December that year. School trustees and administrators complained that the provincial ministry forced school boards to accept the lowest bid for any project, regardless of the bidder’s past performance.

Heavyweights Hunter Meneghello (in red) from City Boxing and Thomas Kippes from Blue Corner used every inch of the ring during Clash at the Cascades 6 Friday at the Coast Hotel & Convention Centre. Kippes won a closely contested split decision. City Boxing lightweight Mat Andreatta took a breather while listening to the advice of his coach James Allison in between rounds of Andreatta’s match against Devon Glover from Maple Ridge’s Fight Pit. Andreatta won via referee stoppage in the third round.

Guest referee Dale Walters, a 1984 Olympic bantamweight bronze medalist, asked Fight Pit’s Devon Glover to put up his hands while administering a standing eight count. Trainer Josh Bohnen (above) shouted encouragement to his boxer Brodi Walker. Dustin Oster won a unanimous decision over Walker. Oster from City Boxing (red trunks) and Walker from Fight Pit traded leather during their welterweight bout.

The 2010 track and field season was one for the ages for the Langley Mustangs, and three of their athletes are being recognized for rising to the top. Braedon Dolfo, Jake Houlton, and Georgia Ellenwood will be awarded for their exceptional accomplishments over the past season. BC Athletics will honour the top track and field athletes at a banquet Jan. 29 at the Hilton Hotel in Richmond. Houlton and Ellenwood will receive the midget award for 15 year olds. Both athletes excelled at the 2010 BC Summer Games as well as at the Canadian championships as members of the B.C. team. They were multiple medal winners at every meet they attended this past season. The 17-yearold Dolfo takes the 2010 male athlete with a disability title and is also a finalist for athlete of the year, in the classification for athletes with disabilities.

Georgia Ellenwood and Jake Houlton, along with Braedon Dolfo (inset left) will be recognized for their achievements at the BC Athletics banquet on Jan. 29. Dolfo, who is visually impaired, has gained both national and international experience competing for the Canadian team. He is currently in New Zealand competing in high jump and in the 4x100 metre relay at the Paralympic World Championships. As well, Dolfo is among Sport BC’s 45th annual Athlete of the Year Award finalists in the category for athletes with disabilities. He joins Para-Alpine skier Lauren Woolstencroft (North Vancouver) and swimmer Stephanie

Dixon (Victoria) as nominees for the award. The winner will be announced at the upcoming Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards ceremony and gala dinner, set for Feb. 24 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond. The Mustangs’ indoor season begins with a meet in Edmonton, followed by a meet at the University of Washington in February. Both a high-performance and recreational club, the Mustangs include members ranging from nine-yearolds to “masters” (35 years of age and older). Losing two of three recent games has dropped the Langley Chiefs to third place in the British Columbia Hockey League’s Coastal Conference. The Langley juniors, with a 26-18-1-7 record, are a point back of the secondplace Surrey Eagles, who downed the Chiefs 3-1 Sunday at South Surrey Arena. The Eagles, at 29-16-1-2, have four games at hand on the Chiefs. The Chiefs sandwiched a 5-3 win Saturday over the Westside Warriors between Sunday’s loss to the Eagles and a 5-4 home-ice defeat Thursday at the hands of the Nanaimo Clippers. Eagles 3, Chiefs 1 The Eagles leapfrogged past the Chiefs in the conference standings by beating them by two goals. Special teams made the difference. The Eagles cashed in on two of their four powerplay opportunities. BCHL points leader Bradley McGowan, a Langley native, paced the Eagles attack with a pair of goals. McGowan now has 31 markers, tying him at second among league goal scorers with the Chiefs’ Josh Myers. The Chiefs trailed 3-0 when Langley defenceman Tim Daly spoiled Eagles’ goaltender Karel St-Laurent’s shutout bid with 8:30 to go in regulation time. Chiefs 5, Westside Warriors 3 Brad McBride scored twice, including the game winner in the third period, and added an assist as the Chiefs downed the Westside Warriors Saturday in front of 1,862 fans at the Langley Events Centre (LEC). McBride’s second of the game, scored on a Langley powerplay, made it 4-2 for the

hosts at the 3:27 mark of the third period. The Warriors tallied with the man advantage with under eight minutes remaining in the third frame to come within a goal of tying the contest. Chiefs captain Trevor Gerling notched his second of the night, 1:08 after Westside’s third goal, to round out the game’s scoring. The teams were locked in a 2-2 tie after the first period. Langley’s Kit Sitterley scored the only goal of the second period to put the Chiefs ahead 3-2 after 40 minutes of play. Nanaimo Clippers 5, Chiefs 4 Thursday at the LEC, Gerling scored twice and added an assist and Myers recorded a goal and three assists, but it wasn’t enough to help the Chiefs overcome an ugly opening period. The Clippers led 4-0 after a first period in which they outshot the Chiefs 15-9. The game was scoreless until the 10:59 mark, when Nanaimo’s Samuel Labrecque drew first blood on a powerplay. That goal was the first of four by the visitors over a span of three minutes and 59 seconds. While the Chiefs out-scored the Clippers 4-1 the rest of the way, and tallied the last two goals of the game, they couldn’t complete the comeback. The Chiefs scored the only two goals of the second period to narrow their deficit to 4-2 after 40 minutes. Nanaimo made it 5-2 at the 5:24 mark of the third frame before Gerling, 9:45 into the period, and Myers, with 36 seconds remaining in regulation time, found the net to bring their team to within a goal. Mike Tebbutt had the Chiefs’ other goal. ••• The Chiefs are back in action Thursday, when they host the Coquitlam Express at the Langley Events Centre.

Hire Locally

• Don’t send out generic resumes. Tailor the content to each individual job and company. As much as possible, repeat the words used in the job description -- many companies use software that scans for keywords. • Ask someone else to review your resume and summarize its key points. If they can’t pick out the most important information in two minutes or less, some editing is required. And make sure it is sent out without spelling and grammatical errors. • Simplicity is key. Avoid graphics, complicated language or stylish fonts, all of which can be distracting and make your resume difficult to read. Editorial provided by Postmedia
