In some ways, Acacia Biwer is a typical six year old. She loves animals, playing with her Buzz Lightyear action figure in her Langley home, and being a big sister to four-year-old Andrew. Acacia also has Down syndrome, which continues to bring a set of parental challenges to her dad Brad and mom Patti. “Obviously we’ve had to learn a lot,” Patti said. “We’ve had a lot of support, so that’s been really an interesting journey. She’s got to see a lot of therapists, like speech, and physio. Everything’s delayed so it’s just a longer time to learn everything than it is with a typical kid where everything’s so fast.” Through Acacia, Patti has

connected with parents of children with special needs. “The nice thing about it is, I’ve met interesting people and been able to share a bit of my story and help people,” she said. “One of the hard parts is some of the resources available to you isn’t always obvious. They’re there, you kind of have to search.” The Variety Club of B.C., which raises funds and distributes grants to help special needs children, is one of those resources, and has lent a huge helping hand to the Biwer family. One of Acicia’s physiotherapists mentioned the Variety Club to Patti. Subsequently, the Biwers applied for Variety funding. Brad was out of work at the time, and the family was facing financial challenges. This made them candidates for the organization’s help. The initial grant from Variety Club covered a session of therapeutic horseback riding at the Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities (PRDA).

Langley City homeowners are being asked for an average of $92 more for 2011 as the City makes for additional costs. “Ninety-two dollars is probably amongst the lowest in all of the municipalities in the Lower Mainland,” explained City administrator Francis Cheung. That average increase amounts to a 3.77 per cent increase for single family dwellings (compared to about five per cent last year) while the condo tax increase is 2.8 per cent. Half the tax increase is due to increasing costs for water/sewer service and waste management.

Roadshow is in Langley starting February 7th! Local Roadshow Expert Examines Some Gold Jewellery

After many very successful shows around the Lower Mainland, The Roadshow is now here in Langley, BC. So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it! Roadshow experts are here to examine all your antiques, collectibles, gold and silver.

jewellery she was never going to wear anyways. Expert Elijah Gold explains, “We have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at. He added, “The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewellery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!”

During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt. “I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”. She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for

At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grandfather. She finally decided to come in to the Roadshow and see what he had given her. She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s, some of which were extremely rare.

Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 Queen Victoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”. She explains, “I never would have thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can finally afford

to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”.

Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow. Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars. Lionel Trains and a

variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is looking for one of your collectibles, they often make offers to buy them.

A man brought in a 1950’s Marx Tin Toy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. We were able to locate a collector for that specific toy within minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Roadshow, we will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket!

See you at the Roadshow!

Volunteers and the groups they assist gathered for the annual Langley City volunteer banquet Feb. 4. by Heather Colpitts

Barry Waites planted a big kiss on his wife Donalda, an very active local volunteer, after she delivered a speech at the City volunteer recognition banquet.

The people who volunteer for City committees along with those involved in groups based in Langley City were honoured at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet Friday evening. City councillors listed off the many residents who sit on City advisory and planning committees alongside bureaucrats and politicians. Langley MLA Mary Polak praised the work of all the volunteers in the community. “They’re the reason that things get done and they do it just because they love to do it,” she commented. “Our communities would not be what they are if not for the dedication of the volunteers.” Polak added that people see that volunteers bring to a community. “We do notice,” she commented. “Our communities notice.” Others who spoke that evening were equally effusive in their praise of the work of local volunteers. “We’re the envy of a lot of communities in the Lower Mainland,” noted City Councillor Teri James. She also used her time at the microphone to read a light-hearted poem about what happens after a volunteer dies. “Many will be shocked to find, when the day of judgment nears, “That there’s a special place in Heaven, set aside for volunteers, “They’ll sit in big recliners, built just to perfect size,

“There will be no committee chairman, no events to organize, “Not one thing to fold or mail, no telephones to ring, “But a finger snap will bring cold drinks and treats fit for a king, “You ask ‘Who will serve these people who have volunteered for all they’re worth? “And serving them will be the ones who did not volunteer on earth.” Coun. Dave Hall had some fun with the crowd, having them stand and raising their hand, extracting a pledge to take part in the Try It Triathlon, one of the many volunteerbased events in the community. Dick Hooper and Donalda Waites were named the honourary volunteers. At the City volunteer banquet, a local volunteer is chosen to offer a response on behalf of all the others, and this year Waites delivered it. “Volunteering is [about] giving, but I

believe we do receive more than we give,” she said. Waites is a former teacher and principal who since retiring has helped with various groups, such as serving on the board of the Langley Community Music School and with the Surrey Christmas Bureau. She’s been a Downtown Langley Ambassador, helps at the Douglas Park Community School breakfast program, and runs the toy department for the Langley Christmas Bureau. Waites said her reward comes from things such as the smiles and thanks of children who start the day off with food in their stomachs or the parent who can provide a Christmas for their children. “Volunteering means… that someone counts on me,” she said. Waites called the Langley Christmas Bureau her second family.

Shelter filled after a year of operation Crime rates are lower around the homeless shelter than in the rest of Langley. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

The Gateway of Hope is now packed almost to capacity with people on their way off the streets and, hopefully, into better lives. Major James Hagglund told Langley Township council last week that the Salvation Armyrun shelter is running at 100 per cent occupancy for men, 96 per

cent for women. “We’re virtually full every night,” Hagglund said. The centre has enough space for 22 men and eight women in its regular shelter, and another 25 long-term residence rooms. “For the men, we have a waiting list. There’s people that want the program,” Hagglund said. “They want the help.” In the residential program, people can stay for up to two years, while getting job training. It is intended to take in people who have had a great deal of trouble making their lives work, and helping them become productive, independent citizens.

Hagglund shared a letter from one of the women in the shelter. “I felt as if I had discovered a new family,” she wrote of her time spent in the shelter over Christmas. Hagglund also told the council that the shelter is feeding about 100 to 110 people every day, including its 30 shelter regulars. That program is still growing. As far as crime in the area, Supt. Derek Cooke, who heads the Langley RCMP, said recent data shows the centre seems to be doing well. Cooke and Hagglund recently met with residents around the shelter. Before it was built, some

residents expressed concern about increased crime due to homeless people heading to and from the shelter. However, a crime analysis of the area showed that in 18 of 25 crime categories, the area immediately around the Gateway had lower crime rates than Langley overall. Cooke said he couldn’t say exactly why that was, but he believed it was a positive impact by the Gateway of Hope. The Gateway is funded largely by BC Housing, but without the ongoing partnership of the Langleys, Hagglund said the shelter could not survive.

Farnworth seeks top NDP job One of the top NDP leadership hopefuls dropped in on Langley. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

The campaigns for the leadership of B.C.’s top two political parties brought the NDP’s Mike Farnworth to Langley on Thursday. Farnworth, seen as one

of the top contenders for the job recently vacated by Carole James, spoke to party members at a Langley City restaurant. He said if the NDP speaks for all British Columbians, they could form the next government. “We can win the next election, and I am convinced of that,” he said. The MLA said he wants his party to speak more forcefully on the economy, to take back that issue

A three-car crash Thursday took place right outside the Langley RCMP HQ’s windows. Just after noon, a small yellow school bus headed east on Fraser Highway at 222nd Street was hit in the 224th Street intersection by a northbound Mazda. The bus was pushed into a Mitsubishi in the next lane. The bus, which was not a school district bus, did not have any children on board at the time of the crash, said Cpl. Holly Marks of the Langley RCMP. The drivers of the Mazda and the Misubishi were slightly injured and were taken to hospital as a precaution. The Mazda driver seems to have gone through a red light. Police gave the driver a ticket, Marks said.

Shylo Sharity beat out entrants from around B.C. to win the Variety Show of Hearts talent contest, something new for this year’s telethon.

Variety – the Children’s Charity

Local tops talent search A Fort Langley university student wowed the expert judges. Fort Langley’s Shylo Sharity will be performing on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon this Saturday. How did the 22-year-old who works at Purdy’s Chocolates and is studying communications at Trinity Western University land a gig on one of the most watched B.C. events during the year? Sharity won the Variety Club Talent Search. Close to 300 entrants, aged 13 to 29, from every corner of the province, entered online. The top 11 finalists were brought to Vancouver where they had the chance of a lifetime to perform before a live audience at the Red Robinson Show Theatre on Feb. 4. After 15 minutes of deliberations, the panel of celebrity and industry judges announced that Sharity was the winner.

Judge Dal Richards feels she’s made for the stage. “I like everything about you – even your name – is cool,” said judge BJ Cook. “You remind me of the amazing Dolly Parton. You are a great performer, I loved you.” Sharity has toured with the group Winter Harp, won the Walnut Grove Idol contest at her high school and appeared as a singer in the series Dead Like Me. The talent show is a new event for the annual fundraising telethon. Since 1965, Variety – The Children’s Charity has raised more than $155 million for families and organizations around B.C. Funding is used for for medical emergencies, therapies, specialized equipment, drug prescriptions, and out-of-town accommodation, meal, and travel costs. Variety also provides grants to hospitals and children’s organizations for construction, renovations, equipment, and program costs.

Township gets rolling on bike lanes by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Hundreds of kilometres of bike lanes could be built in Langley over the next three decades.

Now Township planners have to decide which to build first. Municipal staff are sifting through comments received after consulting with the cycling community in January. Transportation engineer Paul Cordeiro said 160 to 170 people came to a recent open house, many of them leaving comments.

“There were some questions in terms of why some routes weren’t in there,” Cordeiro said. The plans include routes for commuters, for recreational cyclists, and for community riders within smaller neighbourhoods. Routes include major roads such as 200th Street, 88th Avenue, and Glover Road.

A route connecting Campbell Valley and Aldergrove Lake Regional Parks is to wind back and forth between 4th and 8th Avenues, including some off-road trails. Other routes, such as 16th Avenue, were excluded for reasons of safety. Several roads are not in the plans because of steep hills or sharp curves, making them dangerous to share the roads with drivers, Cordeiro said. How exactly the bike routes will look hasn’t been decided. Cordeiro said the Township got a lot of suggestions about marking the routes. All options are open as to how bikes could share the roads, he said. That could include raised lanes, separated bike lanes, lanes divided from traffic with just a few lines of paint, or routes that are simply wide enough to share with cars. The entire network would cost $30 to $40 million, Cordeiro estimated as a “ballpark” figure. The plan covers 30 years and not all the money would be spent at once.

cost $360 million. Langley City has committed $8 million, with the federal government kicking in up to $75 million. On Feb. 23, the public will have a chance to put questions to the project partners: Port Metro Vancouver, TransLink, rail companies (BC Rail, CN, CP and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad), the provincial government, and the municipalities of Surrey, Delta, and Langley Township and City. A formal presentation by the partners, at 7 p.m., will be followed by a question-and-answer session, explained City administrator Francis Cheung. He added that there will be information about changes aimed at addressing concerns already expressed by residents. At previous meetings, strong opposition arose over noise, property values, trucks, funding, and taxation.

Don’t just vote This week, everyone has gotten at least a small chuckle out of the cat signed up as a BC Liberal member. If it was taken seriously, this feline voter could prompt promises of tax-free fancy feast from the top candidates. This kind of prank, or sabotage, is inevitable when the parties are in furious pre-election mode. The Liberals have sworn to sign up more than 35,000 new members during their race, roughly doubling the size of their party. The NDP has already closed its membership signups, but thousands of new members have no doubt jumped aboard. Still, these party members are but the barest fraction of the population of B.C. Yet between them, they’ll determine the next one or two premiers of our province. Many people have no inclination to become a member of a political party. They may be disinterested, or simply find neither party to be a good fit. Those of us who are members of neither party have a series of binary decisions facing us in the next few years. Is it worth it to vote at all? Do we vote based on our local candidates or on the promises of the party leaders? Do we vote Liberal or NDP? Major party or third party alternative? But the choices of leaders, who can do so much to shape this province’s destiny, will be out of our hands. While political leaders urge us to vote, another way to be heard is to stay outside of the political process, and advocate for important issues. Whether it’s education or health care, policing or farming, the province has a great deal of power. As the potential leaders criss-cross the province, make your voice heard. Talk to friends, co-workers, fellow parents at your school, the members of your hockey team. Write letters to newspapers and MLAs. Start a petition, donate to an advocacy group. Educate yourself. Voting, for either a party leader or an elected official, is just the visible tip of democracy. It’s supported – and dwarfed – by the work of hundreds of thousands of people of good conscience. M.C.

Splitting GVRD makes sense

some reflection is needed. How have we sunk into desolation, where council believes that a Toyota Camry can be bought for the price of a Toyota Echo? Can this trend be reversed, as far as it refers to the Township of Langley? May the year 2010 give some clarification to this most important question, for Langley as a whole. Because honestly, I do not really care what happens to the west of the Port Mann bridge, which is “a bridge too far.” Splitting the GVRD makes more and more sense than ever before. Smart meters just a smokescreen

Dear Editor, BC Hydro’s “SmartMeters” are not so smart. BC Hydro is about to spend $1 billion by needlessly changing our existing reliable electric meters to new electronic, wireless, untested gadgets. There is nothing wrong with the existing meters, durably tested by time, many of which have lasted for 20-40 years. BC Hydro estimates that, in 20 years, if everything

goes their way, there could be a $500 million net recoup. That’s an optimistic 40-year break-even payback, not counting the interest on the billion-dollar capital outlay. Geniuses aren’t they? So called SmartMeters are not so smart at all. In fact, there have been problems wherever they have been tried. California’s PG&E utility has installed them (starting in Bakersfield in 2007), and

Mayor was ‘disrespectful’

Dear Editor, As a young adult, I look back fondly on growing up in Langley City. Recent events have ruined this for me. The way that Mayor Peter Fassbender treated my fellow citizens at the Dec. 6 City council meeting was appallingly unprofessional and disrespectful. The direction he is trying to take Langley includes unbeneficial overpasses and roads that will bring semitrucks into a residential area. This is not what the citizens want – which is apparent by the uproar and protest. Yet the mayor is refusing to listen. At one time, not too long ago, I had wanted to live in Langley and raise a family here, but now I am not so sure. Why would anyone want to live in a city where the mayor does not care about his or her quality of life? Serena Brown, Langley City

has had nothing but problems. The whole program is just another sneaky smokescreen guise to raise our rates, reminiscent of the HST tactics. The new breed of electron-eco-gadget-geeks at BC Hydro expect us to cook our dinner in non-peak hour shifts to avoid the blackouts, while we praise our SmartMeters real-time display on our computer screens and admire our new compact fluorescent light bulbs. Like many of Gordon Campbell’s radical socialist green energy (like his Carbon Tax) ideas foisted on us taxpayers, we pay for their dumb ideological political mistakes. I hope the new Liberal leader and his cabinet has enough sense to stop this nonsense and get on with producing more low-cost power, so we can use it without feeling guilty and sell it as the commodity it is. New light bulbs have steep price Dear Editor, Decision-makers seem to think that everyone knows about the benefits of CFL and LED lights, but most people are only aware of the danger of mercury. Although legislation was put in place by the federal government a number of years ago, the ban on incandescent bulb was to take effect January 2012, so most people in B.C. were caught off guard when they started disappearing from the shelves. LED lights and CFL’s may be energy-saving in the long run, but $8 for a CFL or $20 for an LED, when you can buy four incandescents for $3, is a shot in the pocketbook. Of course, the LEDs and CFLs are intended for a longer life span, thereby costing the consumer less in the long run, but it’s not easy to digest when you are on a limited or fixed income or are earning only $8 an hour (the cost of one CFL). Imagine if you will, a household that no longer has access to incandescent light bulbs. They have, say, 20 lights in their

TODAY’S FLYERS... in the Call 604-856-7733 for delivery info.

house, and using the least expensive CFL available at the lowest reasonable lumens, it could cost this consumer upwards of $200. The LEDs are probably the true way of the future, but the cost is prohibitive, at a current cost of $20-$60 a bulb. Again, it may last a lifetime, but initial cost can put them out of the reach of many consumers. Many countries have already banned incandescent lights, so it is inevitable that Canada should follow that road. My issue is that people have not been informed or educated properly. I can envision families sitting around the dining room table so they can use the one or two CFL or LED light bulbs they can afford until the next paycheque. Perhaps there should be some kind of incentive to help in the transition, such as a discounted purchase plan from BC Hydro. They did it with Christmas lights. Dear Editor, Langley is not Vancouver, and Willoughby should not be like Yaletown. The trend to densify was set years ago by the book, From Desolation to Hope - the Pacific Fraser Region in 2010, by Michael Y. Seelig and Alan F.J. Artibise, published in 1991 in cooperation with the Vancouver Board of Trade. I read this when going to the Liveable Regions Strategy sessions (with Mayor John Beales) in 1992. I started rereading it recently. We have now reached the end of the horizon year, 2010, set in that book. Perhaps

Taste the stars at wine gala

by Heather Colpitts

hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com

When champagne was first invented 400 years ago, Dom Perignon said it was a way to taste the stars. Building on that concept, Township 7 Winery is hosting Taste the Stars, a day centred on locally produced sparkling wine. Technically, only sparkling wines from a certain region of France can be called “champagne.”

Partial proceeds from the fifth annual Taste the Stars, on Saturday, Feb. 12, are being donated to the Starlight Children’s Foundation to provide activities and outings for terminally or seriously ill children and their families. “As the wine sparkles, so will the smiles and hearts of the Starlight children and families from across B.C. that will benefit from Township 7’s support,” said Heather Burnett, the foundation’s B.C. regional coordinator. Township 7 donates to various area charities through the year. “We were astounded to discover that our Langley

Bike plan a big upgrade …continued from page A7

Some of the bike lanes, especially community routes in Willoughby, will be built by developers as the area grows and more people move in. Cordeiro said there will likely be a report to council soon, summarizing comments and concerns. It may include some recommended actions for council. The big question now is what parts of the proposed plan will come to life this year. “Which ones can we do for 2011?” Cordeiro said. The Township has had a bike network plan since the 1990s, but this is a major upgrade, with much more detail, Cordeiro said. “Plans are always going to have to be updated from time to time,” he said. He expects this plan will be updated and changed quite a bit over the next few decades, in response to Langley’s growth and change.

vineyards grow the ideal grapes for sparkling wine. Similar to the traditional process in Champagne, the Fraser Valley terroir produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes with low brix and high acidity,” explained owner Mike Raffan. Township 7 started making it in 2000, and makes 50-150 cases each year. Some from 2008’s production has been reserved for this occasion. For Taste the Stars, the winery is holding special seminars on méthode champenoise winemaking at 1 and 3 p.m. People can stop by, learn and support the cause at the same time. Then in the evening, there will be a larger event with live music by We Play for Wine, and discussions on chocolate making, truffle rolling, and seafood/wine pairing. It runs 7-10 p.m. and tickets are $30. Raffan said the demonstrations and seminars tie in with the growing desire for people to understand where their food comes from and how it’s made. The winery is at 21152 16th Ave. People can find out more by calling 604532-1766 or checking out www.township7.com.

Walter Used To Eat Frozen Dinners Alone

Now he enjoys a varied menu and great company Mealtime was mostly a chore for Walter. Living alone, he would simply choose what was easiest to prepare and eat it in front of the TV. Nutrition was rarely a consideration. At Chartwell, the chef changes the menu daily, so Walter not only gets to choose from a variety of balanced meals, but he enjoys them with a sidedish of laughter and conversation.

Front-running Kings slip past Chiefs

by Troy Landreville sports@langleyadvance.com

The fact that 23 points separates them in the British Columbia Hockey League standings doesn’t take the edge off the rivalry between the Langley Chiefs and Powell River Kings. Saturday’s emotion-filled game at the Langley Events Centre (LEC) was evident of that, as the Kings clipped the Chiefs 2-1 to improve to a BCHL-best 41-8-3-2. The loss dropped the Chiefs’ to 28-21-1-7 with three games to go in their regular season. Langley head coach Harvey Smyl said, with the playoffs just around the corner, all the games have an edge to them regardless of who the Chiefs are playing. “The level of intensity has gone up a notch or two the last few weeks,” said Smyl, who added that the Chiefs played “okay” against Powell River. “We did some good things defensively and made headway in terms of team play,” he said. “We tried and we worked, and it didn’t go for us. That’s the way it goes sometimes.” Langley captain Trevor Gerling said it boiled down to puck luck late in the contest, with the Chiefs swarming around Kings goaltender Michael Garteig. “It was tough,” Gerling said. “Our team fought hard to come back but unfortunately we didn’t get any bounces. We took quite a few penalties but we worked hard and played a team game, which is good to see.” After a scoreless first period, Powell River tallied twice in the second frame to move ahead 2-0. The visitors out-shot the Chiefs 31-14 through the first 40 minutes of action. The Chiefs turned the tables in the third period, out-shooting the Kings 15-11 while scoring the only goal of the stanza.

A linesman held Langley Chiefs centre Josh Myers away from the fray, as Chiefs captain Trevor Gerling went after Powell River Kings defenceman Brenden Forbes at the final buzzer of Saturday’s BCHL game at the Langley Events Centre. Troy Landreville/Langley Advance

Emotions ran high in Powell River’s 2-1 win over Langley Saturday at the LEC.

Ius opened the scoring on a Langley powerplay, 2:58 into the first period. The Grizzlies roared back with the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the middle period. While they were out-shot 17-13 in the second frame, the Chiefs scored three unanswered goals to move ahead 4-2. Myers recorded a natural hat trick in the second period. His first two came in a span of a minute and 47 seconds, and included an unassisted, shorthanded marker. He tallied Langley’s fourth goal at the 12:50 mark of the frame. The Chiefs held the Grizzlies off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Galley stopped 47 of 49 Grizzlies shots, and was especially sharp during the final 20 minutes, when the Chiefs were outshot 15-6 by the visitors. ••• The Chiefs return to action tonight (Tuesday) when they visit the Coquitlam Sports Centre for a game against the host Express, who are battling for the final playoff spot in the Coastal. Game time is 7 p.m.

Spartans ‘D’ sets new mark The Trinity Western men’s basketball team broke the school record for fewest points allowed in a game, holding the Brandon Bobcats to just 45 points, and romped to a 104-45 win Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. After holding Brandon to just eight points in the first quarter, the Spartans knew they had a chance to hold Brandon to less than the record of 47 points, which was set Oct. 22, 2009 in a 68-47 win over Waterloo. And with a sevenpoint fourth quarter to bookend a pair of 15point second and third quarters, TWU set the new school mark and, in doing so, earned the weekend sweep. TWU also set the school record for largest margin of victory as the 59-point difference was nine points clear of the previous mark which came in a 117-67 win over Thompson Rivers Nov. 6, 2010. With the win, the Spartans improved to 19-3. They wrap up their regular season next weekend when they travel to Manitoba for a two-game series. ••• Tyrell Mara had a school record-breaking 21-rebound performance to lead the Spartans to an 85-64 win over Brandon Friday at the Langley Events Centre. The previous record was 19 boards.

a berth in the nationals later this summer. Joel Harrison’s first place finish in the 11- and 12year-olds three-metre event surpassed the national junior standard handily, while Kailee Lingham’s consistency on the board earned her a pair of fifth-place finishes and a national junior standard in both the one and three-metre events in the 13- and 14-year-olds category. Veteran diver Kim Lotnick picked up two silvers in the one-metre (16- and 17-year-olds) and one-metre open events, while achieving the senior national standard in the latter.

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
