Windshield Repair, Replacement & much more!

The criminal trial of a former Coquitlam mayor accused of stealing a recreational trailer from a Langley dealership is underway. The trial began in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday with testimony from the arresting officer, who recalled Jon Kingsbury saying he took the recreational trailer in question. The longtime politician pleaded not-guilty to four criminal counts in B.C Supreme Court in New Westminster. Crown counsel Brian McKinley laid out “a simple case, but not straightforward,” against Kingsbury.” McKinley said the charges against Kingsbury ultimately boil down to the case of a stolen recreational trailer owned by a business acquaintance, Jean Aussant. “He pretended to be Jean Aussant and was allowed to take a travel trailer from the dealership,” McKinley told the court. He said Kingsbury and Aussant had known each other for some time before entering into a business relationship in 2007, when Kingsbury intended to purchase a half-interest in Aussant’s company, Enviro Surface Care. Under the company of Polaris Ventures, Kingsbury was to pay a deposit to begin the transfer of shares. McKinley said that, as he had not yet completed the transaction, the pair agreed to have Kingsbury pay $24,000 to the Travelhome RV Marketplace to complete the purchase of a 27-foot trailer for Aussant and his wife, Diane. Aussant had initiated the purchase, McKinley said, with a trade-in of a former RV and a deposit. Aussant left the trailer at the dealership on Aug. 8, 2008, for warranty repairs and was waiting for parts. McKinley alleged that, on Aug. 14, Kingsbury arrived at the dealership and told the staff he was Aussant and was there to claim the unrepaired trailer. Documents were produced in court with a signature of “J. Aussant,” which the Crown alleges were signed by Kingsbury. On Aug. 27, Aussant was called by the dealership to tell him that the parts had arrived for the repairs. The service employee asked Aussant if he could return the trailer. Aussant realized something was amiss, as he had not taken the trailer off the lot, and went to the dealership. Langley RCMP were called, and a criminal investigation began. Langley RCMP Const. Veronica Steiger took the stand Monday morning, recalling how she went to Kingsbury’s Haversley Avenue home at 4 a.m. on Oct. 9, 2008. The former mayor had answered in his night robe, and she interviewed him under his carport. “I told him I was investigating the theft of Jean Aussant’s trailer. I asked him if he knew anything about it,” she told the court. “He said, ‘Yes, I took it.’ And then he said something about a civil court case.” Defence counsel Peter Schmidt said the trailer deposit was a “loan” to the Aussants, and that Kingsbury maintained an ongoing “interest” in the trailer, as he had paid for it. He asked the court to pay attention to discrepancies in statements made by the investi-

gating officer and witnesses at Travelhome. Schmidt asked the constable whether she had watched the entire transaction on the Travelhome video surveillance collected Sept. 12. Steiger replied “briefly” but not beyond what the employee identified as Kingsbury personating Aussant. “I didn’t feel it would have any evidentiary value,” she said. Schmidt attempted to argue that case law dealing with hearsay was applicable, in the sense that his client offered a consistent story throughout his early morning interview. Schmidt said his client had “no time to

make up a story and concoct something.” After hearing the Crown’s objection, Justice Miriam Gropper, however, ruled that “the length of time” between the alleged theft and the morning of Kingsbury’s arrest would have allowed “an opportunity for Mr. Kingsbury to concoct a story.” The four charges against Kingsbury are: theft over $5,000, personation with intent to gain advantage, causing a person to use a forged document, and fraud over $5,000. The trial is scheduled to continue all week in New Westminster.

A bizarre run of bad luck has a Langley woman on the verge of losing her dog training business. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Michelle Fahrney thought her long-awaited dream of owning her own dog training business was coming true. But three months later, the Langley woman has lost her main investor, is facing a mountain of bills, and might be evicted unless she can find new customers soon. Fahrney had worked for others for years, training dogs and working with their owners. Her parents were trainers and breeders, and she grew up learning the techniques and absorbing a passion for animals. Through her work with a local pet store, helping people train troubled or troublesome dogs, she met a man who offered to help Fahrney get her own business up and running. The financial help for Fahrney was “like heaven,” she said. Jail requested for senior driver

An 88-year-old man who had been driving without a license for years is facing jail time for a fatal accident. by Keith Fraser Postmedia Network Inc.

The Crown is seeking a jail term for an 88-year-old visually impaired man whose dangerous driving killed a flag person in Fort Langley almost two years ago. In November, Melle Grietinus Pool pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Terry Mitchell, 52, of Pitt Meadows. Pool, a retired Abbotsford dairy farmer and father of seven, was 87 and had no driver’s licence when he got into his truck on Feb. 25, 2008. As he was driving along River Road near Fort Langley at about 30 km/h, he struck and killed Mitchell, who was working traffic control. Prosecutor Don Wilson told B.C. Supreme

Court Justice Catherine Bruce that Pool, who was deemed unfit to drive by his doctors and did not renew his licence when it expired in 2001, regularly went out driving. Wilson said that Pool, an otherwise lawabiding citizen, deserved to be incarcerated. Wilson did not say how long a jail term was warranted, but cited case law ranging up to 18 months. Mitchell’s widow, Alison Stacey, read a victim impact statement, saying she was still struggling with the devastating loss of her “husband, lover, partner.” Defence lawyer Jeffrey Campbell asked for a probationary period rather than jail, there were “exceptional circumstances.” Pool, he said, had made many significant contributions to the community. There is no geriatric unit in provincial jails, he said, and as an elderly person, Pool would be vulnerable and require segregation, he said. Pool is expected to be sentenced March 3. • More online at www.langleyadvance.com click on ‘News’

The Employment Standards Act sets out the minimum amount of severance to which an employee who is terminated without cause is entitled. Often, employees are entitled to common law severance in excess of the statutory minimums. A number of factors can affect the proper notice period or severance entitlement, including the employee’s age, length of service, position, market conditions, industry standards, and their efforts to find alternate work. You may wish to consult with your legal advisors prior to terminating employees in order to determine the amount of notice or severance to which they may be entitled.

The Langley Chiefs might be changing hands. A local group may tempt the current owners to sell the British Columbia Hockey League team. Moray Keith, one of the principal owners of the junior A Chiefs, said his group had no intention to sell the team, but has been approached by what he considers to be a small, committed group with strong business and hockey interests in Langley. Currently, the team is owned by Keith and Jim Bond (both Vancouver businessmen), two Burnaby busi-

nessmen, and head coach Harvey Smyl. “We are totally committed to the best interests of BCHL hockey in the Langley Events Centre,” Keith said. “We are extremely proud of the Chiefs and the team’s role within the community of Langley.” Keith said the current ownership group is “especially proud that, year after year, we have been able to provide an opportunity for hockeyplaying boys to mature into strong young men, and for many of them to earn scholarships to great colleges and universities in Canada and the United States.” He added, “We will sell the team only if new ownership will be best

for the Chiefs and for Langley. We believe the people that have approached us would be fantastic owners – a real asset to the team, the BCHL, and the community of Langley” According to Keith, the two groups will work with the BCHL’s league office as well as with the Township of Langley to determine if the team will change owners at the end of the current season. The Chiefs have reached the BCHL playoffs for the 16th consecutive year. The team’s final regular season game is this Friday, Feb. 18, against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks at the LEC.

Justice deals lightly with hardest cases “This isn’t a court of justice, son. This is a court of law,” Billy Bragg nearly famously sang in “Rotting on Remand.” The English punk-folk singer was referring to innocent people being held in jail before trial, although the notion you don’t get justice in a law court is normally claimed nowadays by crime victims upset by the light sentences given to criminals. But there’s another group that is hurt when the courts deliver law instead of justice, and that is the group that comprises all the rest of us. Take the case of Chad Allen Stewart, who has managed to rack up 50 convictions in his 28 years on earth. Unless Stewart is the world’s most unlucky, atypical hoodlum, that means he’s committed hundreds of crimes in his life, the vast bulk of which never resulted in charges, let alone convictions. Stewart is now before the courts to be sentenced for using a large knife to rob a Maple Ridge restaurant in 2009 not long after he was released from prison for one of his previous robberies that he was caught at. At his sentencing hearing this week, the career crook claimed he was a changed man, and that going to prison was “getting old.” That’s not an uncommon claim to make, for people in his shoes. The Crown is asking the court to give Stewart six to eight years in prison, although the thug will get four years knocked off, thanks to the two-for-one credit he gets for the time he’s been in remand. Prosecutor Peter Ng is no doubt quoting the law in calling for such a weak sentence. But if we had justice in Canada, Stewart would be declared an incorrigible, lifelong, repeat dangerous offender, and he would be given an indefinite sentence. With 50 previous convictions, why should we risk anything less?

Egyptian vacation

Medical insurance critical

Dear Editor, I left for Cairo on Jan. 15 and returned Jan. 29. I found more than half of the tourists were retired school teachers from all over the world – and that there were no women in the work force. It was odd having male chambermaids. I was there for one week, seeing the pyramids down the Nile River when the protesting erupted. While getting off a river cruise boat I slipped and twisted both ankles. Believing they were likely just sprained, I did not seek medical attention. I had also declined medical coverage, as I’m 74 years old and it was quite expensive. Once our travel group returned to Cairo from our River Cruise we were not able to leave our hotel, the Hilton on the same block as the parliament building that was set ablaze. Going to the hospital at this point was not an option. Protesters, fleeing tear

gas, came into our hotel, breaking some windows in the process. The wind carried the tear gas in. It was horrible seeing men and women moaning, weeping in pain from the stinging of the gas in their eyes. On return to Canada, I visited the Langley emergency room. I had actually broke my fibula, near my ankle, and had stupidly walked on it for a week. I’m now in a cast and crutches, and grateful to be home.

I happened to land at Langley hospital on a quiet Sunday morning, and was in and out of the ER in two hours. The staff at LMH, from the triage nurse to the staff in the medical imaging department to the ER physician, all helped to make my experience seamless and satisfying. And to all those seniors out there: Don’t pass up on the medical insurance! Charlie Montalbetti, Langley

Emergency services

Firefighters prove worth each day

Dear Editor, Within my 32-year career as a paramedic in the GVRD, 20 have been spent serving the public alongside Langley’s fire departments. Our fire departments are second to none. They are a pleasure to work with. It gives me a great sense of security, to know they are there within the chaos. It was a firefighter who saved my life on an emergency response, by preventing me from stepping back off a four-storey building in the wee hours. When I found a friend dead off-duty, it was the full-time firefighters from the Township who were first to arrive. We then had

the necessary equipment to continue and to allow for a successful resuscitation. Having a front row seat and observing our firefighters in action shows me that there is no job too big or too small for them. There is always care and total commitment towards the victims in need. The Township gave me a day of firefighter training, in order to give me a good insight. I can assure you that crawling into a building full of smoke or standing on a building with flames shooting through it gives me no inspiration to become a firefighter. Being put up in the air in a ladder truck didn’t help

Leadership

B.C. politics entertain Dear Editor, Apparently the self-proclaimed “stallion” Kash Heed, has a problem with ethics, Christy Clark (were she premier) would put the HST to a vote in the legislature, contrary to the wishes of the people of B.C. (not to mention that she is a declared federal Liberal supporter). Without exception, all provincial Liberal leadership candidates are tainted with the implementation of the HST. Furthermore, the Undemocratic Party, a.k.a. New Democratic Party, has declared its support for Affirmative Action in its internal structure, and the party appears to be imploding into itself. Oh, what is a B.C. resident to do? Which party is a B.C. voter supposed to support? Perhaps it is time for a legitimate alternate party. Oh, where are you Chris Delaney and the BC First Party? But the entertainment factor of BC politics has to be taken into consideration – the other Canadian provinces are no doubt amused. Gord Weitzel, Langley

matters, either. Riding along with a fire crew last week showed me their dedication towards their responsibilities. Between their responses and chores, they review their skills in order to remain current and sharp with the skills needed for future responses. Losing Langley firefighter Ron Dunkley from our family through a tragedy displayed how great a hole one can leave within the community when not present. Emergency service personnel give back to their communities by providing community services at many events. Observing our firefighters at Langley local events points out to me how much our firefighters give back to the community. The objective of this letter is to ask the Langley City council and the Langley Township council to proclaim a Firefighter Appreciation Week each year in Langley. It would be a great way for the community to say thanks. It would also be a great way to show respect for a team of local heroes. The next time you see any of our firefighters, shake their hand and tell them, “Good job done.” They deserve it. It takes a steady hand and a keen eye when cooking bannock over an open flame. People can try out this heritage skill Feb. 19 at Stories by the Campfire, a family event being put on at Derby Reach Regional Park. Those attending can cook bannock on sticks over open fires, but they will want to be careful, for it will be easy to become distracted by the storytellers and for the bannock to burn or fall into the flames. “Join us for some bannock and tea, or cozy up to a crackling fire to listen to spellbinding tales of Fort Langley’s past,” said Lori Bartley, with Metro Vancouver Parks. Storytellers in period dress will tell of the history of the area and give a taste of pioneer life. “This cozy event offers a great opportunity to

Stories by the Campfire was held for the first time last year and young people learned how to cook bannock dough over fire. learn about the area’s rich history, and also indulge in the childhood joys and memories of cooking over an open fire,” she said. Metro Vancouver Parks has teamed with the Royal Engineers Living History Group, Fort Langley National Historic Site, and local historians for this second annual event. The storytellers that day will include Amn Johal, of the historic site, Royal Engineers member Tim Watkins, historian Jane Watts and heritage advocate Bays Blackhall. “We just got confirmation that we will have a fiddler on hand for the first part of the afternoon,” Bartley added.

It’s free to attend and runs 1-4 p.m., but people are advised to dress for the outdoors as the event goes ahead, rain or shine. “This is the second year of our event, and it will be held near the historic cairn just east of Allard Crescent. This site is significant not only for its gorgeous views of the Fraser River, but marks the location of the original Fort Langley built in 1827,” Bartley said. Parking is available, but people are encouraged to get there in a more historical way such as walking, biking, or padding. More information is at www.metrovancouver.org or call 604-530-4983.

Hicks skis to NorAm gold on Utah mountain Eddie Hicks wants to be one of the best skiers in the world, not just on the NorAm tour.

It marked Hicks’ second career win in a singles event at the NorAm level. The first came a week prior in Calgary, on the third of February. There was only us three Canadians in finals, but we were onetwo-three, which looked extremely promising.”

The Canucks didn’t manage to bring out the brooms though, and Hicks was extremely disappointed: “It was great to win, but it would have been a lot better with my team-

deep and just a little outside the line, which cost me my goal of scoring 26 or higher, and finished with 25.92,” he explained. Second and third place went to Americans Michael Degrandis and Reed Snyderman, respectively. Less than a point separated second and ninth, so Hicks said he was “pretty happy” to have won by almost a full point. “But I don’t want to take my foot off the gas, so to speak,” Hicks said. “I made a mistake in my run that day, didn’t quite accomplish my goal for score and left the door open just a little.” Hicks said he wants to one of the best skiers in the world, not just on the NorAm tour. “I’m setting the bar higher for myself and pushing myself to perform to a level above and beyond a NorAm win,” he said. Hicks is unsure what the future holds. As it stands now, he might go to Quebec for the next NorAm event in Val St. Come. “Hopefully with a pair of wins I will be able to lock up a NorAm Grand Prix win,” he said. “I’m ranked first with a 107-point margin between myself and second. But, as always, my focus is on World Cup. I’m still 16th in the World Cup Grand Prix and have my fingers crossed for a spot for the last few events of the year and my sights set on finishing amongst the top 10.”

Intercollegiate hockey

Winning weekend for TWU Trevor Beaupre’s timing was spot on Saturday afternoon. The Trinity Western University forward scored with 26.5 seconds left in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and give the Spartans their second B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League win in as many days, as TWU knocked off Okanagan 4-3 at the Langley Events Centre. With 30 seconds left in what was an otherwise chance-less final frame, the Spartans notched the winner. Robert Vos raced into the offensive zone on a three-on-two and dropped the puck to Beaupre, who was all alone in the slot. He buried the puck with a quick shot far side past the glove of Okanagan goalie Adam Butler. Leading the Spartans in the win was Brendan Elenko, who had two goals before getting a five-minute major and a game misconduct for high sticking late in the first period, and Vos, who had a goal and two assists.

Chapman stopped 35 shots en route to the Spartans’ first shutout of the year. It was also the first time in more than four years that SFU has been gooseegged. “Any win is a good win but this one you want to savour,” Spartans head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk said. “We played a 60-minute game and you can’t ask for any more. We worked on our power play all week and it was ticking. It was just a great overall game. ••• The Spartans are back in action next weekend, Feb. 18-19, when they travel to Victoria for back-to-back games.

Darnell Dyck, a player who has always dreamed of being a Chief, helped make mincemeat out of the Merritt Centennials Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. The team’s former stick boy scored twice and added four assists in the Langley Chiefs’ 8-2 blitzing of the visiting Centennials. “You certainly have to be doing some good things and be at the right spot at the right time to have a night like that, and he had one of those nights,” said Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl, regarding the lanky 6’3” winger. “He’s an offensive player, a kid who hits the seams and gets into the holes, and he’s smart around the net. He’s been around the game forever so he understands it.” The game was close until the third period, when the Chiefs scored four unanswered goals to turn a 4-2 lead into a rout in front of 1,871 fans at the LEC. Dyck’s first goal, at the 5:50 mark of the third period, was of the highlight-reel variety. The 19-year-old went forehand to backhand before scoring to make it 6-2 Chiefs. He closed out a memorable night by scoring the final goal of the contest with 2:27 to go on the clock.

Langley netminder Wyatt Galley made 32 saves to record his 23rd win of the season. The Chiefs, who have scored 16 goals in their past two games, have won three of four games in February as they gear up for the British Columbia Hockey League playoffs. “I’m pleased with the effort,” Smyl said. “We’ve been doing some very good things the last few games, and we’re starting to be rewarded with the effort.” Smyl said the Chiefs are a pretty confident group to start with. Now the players have developed some better habits, he noted. Catch a great job. With more than 15,000 jobs on working.com is a great place to find your next job.

Tired of an inside sales position attempting to sell “me too products” like photo copiers, phone systems, conventional alarm systems by making phone calls? Tired of competing on price? Tired of declining market and sales? Want an inside sales career with a company that has no competitor and prospects who want their services? Then Sonitrol is in your future. Sonitrol, the leader in providing “Verified” security services across North America is presently looking for successful, experienced, and professional, inside sales consultants to join our existing inside sales team in South Surrey. Check us out at www.sonitrol-canada.com and watch the information videos under “About Sonitrol.” Our inside sales consultants work to set appointments for our outside sales consultants by phoning prospects that are generated by our outside sales team. You must have experience using the phone to set appointments and enjoy working on the phone in an office environment. Hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday. If you are not an experienced business to business inside sales rep who is accustomed to working on the phone, please do not apply. Our inside sales consultants are teamed with an experienced outside sale rep who will provide prospects for the inside sales rep to call and set appointments for the outside sales rep to introduce our unique services. Our inside sales reps are selling appointments not products. Inside sales consultants receive a competitive salary, commission on sales and the reward of being successful. Inside sales consultants should earn a minimum of $41,000 and more likely $47,000 in their first 12 months. After year one, experienced Sonitrol inside sales consultants earn between $47,000 and $65,000 per year. Interested parties should contact www.sonitrol-canada.com and complete the form under the “careers” section, or fax resume to 604-542-5335.

SUDOKU Fun By The Numbers

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
