A 12-year-old boy was killed and three other people hurt when a crash shattered the calm of rural Langley Friday morning. A Ford Mustang heading east on Robertson Crescent was hit by a garbage truck going north on 256th Street at about 11:40 a.m., said Cpl. Holly Marks of the Langley RCMP. Police, ambulance paramedics, and firefighters rushed to the scene, but the boy was too badly injured. Another 12-year-old who was riding in the back, and the 18-year-old driver, the deceased boy’s cousin, were taken to hospital by Air Ambulance with serious injuries. It’s still unknown exactly what caused the crash, but police say the truck had the right of way at

A large number of emergency crews responded to a crash involving a large truck and a passenger vehicle just before lunchtime Friday. the intersection. The Ford driver may have gone through the stop sign without checking, or possibly without stopping. “Whether the stop sign was jumped or whether she didn’t stop at all, we don’t know,” said Marks. The driver of the garbage truck was taken to hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. “Obviously he is just devastated,” said Marks. “There’s nothing happy about this.” Emergency responders to the crash were also deeply affected, due to the fact that children were the victims of the crash. “Our crews were pretty shaken,” said assistant Township fire
chief Bruce Ferguson. That extended to the police and ambulance crews who were at the scene as well, he said. Firefighters are being offered counselling after attending the crash. Speed and alcohol are not thought to have been factors in the crash. Investigators are performing mechanical inspections on the car and truck, and will be downloading the contents of the vehicles’ on-board computers to try to piece together exactly what happened. Both men driving the cars had life-threatening injuries. The small child in the back seat of the minivan was also hurt, though not as severely. Another investigation began into the crash, including aerial photos of the scene taken by the Air 1 police helicopter. Firefighters ran into a burning building on Friday afternoon and came out with an injured woman who had slept through the fire. The fire broke out at about 4:30 p.m. in a home in the 21000 block of Crush Crescent, said assistant fire chief Bruce Ferguson. “There was a report that there was a person inside,” Ferguson said. The first firefighters on the scene found a woman inside, asleep on a bed, and brought her out alive. She suffered some smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital, but is expected to live. She very possibly could have died if firefighters hadn’t arrived in time, Ferguson said. The fact that full-time firefighters were available at the nearby Willoughby hall was a big help in get-
ting there quickly, Ferguson said. “We were on scene within four minutes of the actual call,” he said. “It normally takes that long to get guys to the hall, if it’s a paid call system.” The cause of the fire was an electrical short in the refrigerator. There was one smoke alarm in the suite, but it had not activated, Ferguson said. The home and its contents suffered about $150,000 worth of damage, and local disaster aid groups have found an alternate living space for the residents. Township firefighters also responded to a fire Saturday morning in the 20800 block of 88th Avenue. A pile of newspapers outside the door of a townhouse complex caught fire. They were quickly extinguished and only about $5,000 damage to the building was done. However, it’s worrisome as it may have been an arson. “It has the earmarks of a very suspicious fire,” Ferguson said.

Truck drivers are using the bridge – but only when it will save them money, said the head of the B.C. Trucking Association.
Police statements and signatures were subject to lengthy scrutiny during Jon Kingsbury’s criminal trial in B.C. Supreme Court Friday. What Kingsbury, the former Coquitlam mayor, told police the morning of his arrest was subject to lengthy cross-examination by Crown prosecutor Brian McKinley. Kingsbury is on trial for a number of charges for taking a trailer from a Langley RV dealership. • More online

Economy
Bridge’s impact still unknown Langley is getting a lift from the Golden Ears Bridge, but the amount is unknown, experts say. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
How much of an impact is the Golden Ears Bridge having on Langley’s economy? The truth is, no one knows exactly how many dollars the bridge is bringing to town, or how much money it’s saving local businesses. TransLink recently revealed that the number of drivers heading over the bridge daily has plateaued at a little less than 30,000. Before the bridge was built, the Vancouver Board of Trade estimated it would result in 700 new businesses and more than 7,100 new homes, spread across both sides of the river. It was also expected to result in residential property value increases of about $118 million, and $221 million increases for industrial land. However, no before and after study was done to confirm that impact, largely due to cost. Gary MacKinnon, the Township of Langley’s economic development officer, said the only way to get hard data would have been to study a group of retailers both before and after the bridge opened. That would have meant hiring outside consultants, who typically charge about $150

Fort Langley
The Fort IGA will be rebuilt, but it will take more than a few months, the owner says. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
It’s one of the largest “get well” cards ever created in Langley, sent from a whole neighbourhood to a beloved local business. Robert Lee, longtime owner of the Fort Langley IGA, received the massive threepanel card in the wake of the fire that destroyed the store. “Unbelievably touching,” Lee said of the card. “There’s no words to describe what’s happened.” The card was the brainchild of Gay Smith, a local woman who, like many, felt the absence of the store as a meeting place and a Fort institution. She set up two poster-sized panels at the Fort’s post office for anyone to sign, and took a third to the Fort Langley Business Improvement Association. Hundreds of signatures and messages of support adorn the now-framed panels. “It didn’t take very long,” Smith said of the project. Andy Abreo, an employee of the Fort IGA and a local resident, dropped by the post office frequently to watch the signatures fill in every available space. “I saw it grow,” he said. The young man, now working part-time
at the Langley City IGA, was one of the first employees on the scene the morning of the fire. He joined his fellow workers as they watched Township firefighters make a vain effort to put out the flames. “We didn’t say much, we just stood there,” he said. Still in his 20s, Abreo noted that the store has been there for longer than he’s been alive. While the old store is being commemorated, the new one is slowly being born. “Obviously, we’re going to rebuild,” Lee said. However, it will take longer than a few months. It will involve consulting with the community and designing a new store that will fit the heritage-style requirements for building on the Fort’s main street. Those requirements certainly didn’t exist when the grocery store was first built almost 70 years ago. However, the Lee family hasn’t even talked to architects yet about the design. On Friday, they were pleased that the clean up of debris from the old store is expected to finish. Then the parking lot behind the store will be re-opened. The public will be kept up to date through the media, but also through a new Facebook page created by Abreo. He was startled to see that a large number of former Fort residents and IGA employees have become fans of the page in a short time – even one man currently in Afghanistan. The IGA’s Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/igafortlangley.

A little more information was officially released Feb. 15 about the RCMP investigation into Township Mayor Rick Green. A resolution released from a closed council meeting confirms that council voted to disclose some information to police, even though the information was protected by lawyer-client privilege. Two items in particular, a report from legal firm Lidstone & Company dated May 17, 2010, and an opinion letter from the same firm dated Oct. 12, have been handed over to the Mounties. The investigation apparently concerns a complaint about the release of information, potentially violating the Community Charter and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. This confirms statements from Township councillors and staff over the past few weeks, which suggested someone complained about an improper release of information. Rick Green [“RCMP ask questions about Green” Township mayor Langley Advance, Jan. 28, and “Green flips on RCMP call,” Langley Advance, Feb. 1.] The release also identifies the investigator as Cpl. K.R. Kolot of the RCMP. The Langley detachment is not involved in the case, which is being conducted through the provincial E Division commercial crime section. The legal issues under investigation could potentially result in a lawsuit. Section 117 of the Community Charter says council members must keep certain information in confidence, and if the municipality suffers damages, it can recover those costs. The section of the Freedom of Information Act covers the disclosure of personal information by public bodies. The name of the complainant, if it is known, has not been released. Police have publicly refused to comment on the investigation, even to confirm whether or not it is taking place.

Overpasses on agenda Langley City is making another pitch for the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor projects Wednesday. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
It’s Langley City’s turn to play host, scheduling a Wednesday meeting with the public over the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor road projects. The City is one of the partners in the 192nd and 196th Street work, with an $8.5 million stake in the $360 Roberts Bank Corridor Combo Project. On the western edge of Langley City and Township, the project involves overpasses on 196th and 192nd Streets and road construction in the area as well. A formal presentation by the partners, 7-7:45 p.m. will be followed by a question-and-answer session. The project has been contentious. Residents in the affected areas have started a petition and voiced opposition to City council. The meeting will include background on how the project developed. As well, there will be information about changes made to the projects to address residents’ concerns, which have included noise, the affect on property values, added truck usage on the roads, funding, and taxation. The public information meeting will be at Nicomekl Elementary, 20050 53rd Ave. More information is available at www.robertsbankrailcorridor.ca.

Full-time just time enough Ten years ago last October, Langley Township’s fire department was staffed almost entirely by “volunteer” firefighters. They were paid to attend training sessions, and to respond to fire alarms, and their professional commitment was without question – they were dedicated men and women who trained and worked hard for their role in protecting their community. But they had day jobs which they had to leave in order to answer their call to action. Ten years ago last October, a house burned down in Brookswood. A woman inside the house died. Even more tragic, it was determined that, if those dedicated firefighters had been able to attend the fire directly from the firehall, instead of having to leave their jobs first, the minutes saved might have saved the woman’s life. That event rekindled a simmering debate. Some in the community felt that Langley Township was long overdue for a fire department staffed with full-time firefighters. Others felt that the cost of a full-time fire department serving all of Langley Township would be prohibitive. They were skeptical that having firefighters at the ready in firehalls, instead of expecting working men and women to leave their day jobs to offer emergency response, would save enough time to make a significant difference. They felt that the tax increases needed to staff full-time firehalls would damage the community more than the unlikely prospect of another closecall fire like the one that stole that life in Brookswood. This week, full-time firefighters were able to respond to a fire in four minutes – half the time that the most dedicated volunteers would have needed to get there. And those four minutes almost certainly saved a life. So now we just have to ask: does anyone still think Langley Township’s full-time fire service is too expensive? – B.G.

Bridge tolls
Everybody is in it together Dear Editor, After my pre-dawn walk with my dog, I sat down to eat a quick bite of toast before heading off into the nightmare that is the Port Mann Bridge traffic between 6 and 7 a.m., so that I can get to work on time. Unfortunately, I read a morning paper article about a UBC Transport Economist’s view the we should “put tolls on all bridges, tunnels.” “The people who use a facility are the ones who should pay for it,” he said. His argument was that retired people who walk everywhere shouldn’t have to pay for improvements to the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges. Well, I guess if you want to follow that thought all the way through, people who live in Vancouver shouldn’t have to pay for any highway improvements in the province, and people who live in Prince George shouldn’t have to pay for Highway 1 or 3 or 5 or… This is ridiculous. We are a province with a provincial economy dependent on the transfer of goods, services, and people all around our extensive society. Vancouver central is not an economy unto itself, and would be a vastly different city if it didn’t have goods, services, and workers coming in and out across the arms of the Fraser River on a daily basis. Let’s talk about how many of the people who work inside those arms that are actually able to afford housing in that space.
I love Langley, and am immensely glad to live here. But the initial move here was because when my husband, four children, and I moved down from northern B.C., housing price inequities between rural B.C. and the Lower Mainland meant we didn’t have the kind of home equity it would take to buy a house that was within walking distance of my current office in Burnaby, much less my husband’s workplace in downtown Vancouver. The economist says that tolling users “looks equitable.” To whom? Take a look at who uses the bridges and tunnels, ask them if they have any choice, and then do a real study on the effects of the loss of workers, goods, and services on the cities inside those transport routes if “users” stopped making the crossing. My tax dollars didn’t build the Massey Tunnel, because I wasn’t working yet. Does that mean I shouldn’t drive through it? I hope to be a retiree someday, and I won’t mind my taxes paying for the same kinds of services for the next generation that I benefited from in my working life. After all, I expect that people still working when I am retired will be paying taxes for the home care workers I may need, and for the transit systems that I will use. On the other hand, if the tolls keep rising for working people, I may never have to worry about the luxury of retiring. Michelle Laurie, Langley

Traffic
Now here is where I need to take the high road and explain what may have happened if this “man” had done the same thing to a person with his same road rage temper. Well I guess, first off, this old road-rage man more than likely would not have acted the way he did if he had noticed there was a man in the other car. Or I’m sure the police and ambulance would have been called. There would have been lawyers involved and years of criminal business to deal with. We read all the time of road rage and I’m sure this old road-rage man thought afterwards that he really did act like a jackass and got away with a freebie. I’m here to say, yes, he did.

Abortion increases risks
Dear Editor, Women who have had an abortion are six to seven times more likely to have a higher suicide rate. Women who have had an abortion have a 65 per cent higher risk of clinical depression. Women who have had an abortion are five times more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. Despite the claims of Planned Parenthood and other pro-choice organizations, studies have shown that women who abort are more likely to have problems. Dean Clark, Langley
TODAY’S FLYERS... in the
I know there are many women out there who would have gladly got out of their car and showed this “man” the proper way not to treat a lady. So my hope in writing this open letter to the “old road-rage man” is for him to remember that not all people are mean and take advantage of smaller, more helpless people the way he did. Also, acting in the roadrage manner that he did could really come back to haunt him. Do the right thing next time someone makes a small mistake around you or if someone cuts you off on the road, and give them a smile. Hopefully, they will give you a wave back, saying thank you. That action will not get you hurt for a simple accidental mistake on our roadways. We all share our roads and sometimes accidents happen. If you are so uptight with your life that you find yourself threatening people, then stop driving before you meet up with someone like me. I’m a happy driver T. Dear Editor, My wife and elderly mother in-law were driving in the Willowbrook Shopping Centre area and almost cut off an elderly male driver. He freaked out on my wife, pulling up beside her at a high rate of speed, red-faced and shaking his finger. This “man” then speed up in front of my wife’s car and slammed on his brakes, forcing my wife to do the same. This “man” then got out of his vehicle, with total disrespect for other motorists – I’m sure this is the exact thing he was mad at my wife for doing to him – and threatened my wife and elderly mother in-law. Don’t worry, my wife gave it right back to him.

It’s not just kids’ stuff
Bullying is a serious issue being tackled by Walnut Grove Secondary. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
Bullying is no longer considered a rite of passage that most people must endure during their school years and then move on with life. While bullying hasn’t been eliminated, it has been acknowledged for the damage it can inflict. Walnut Grove Secondary takes its antibullying activities seriously. They start in the days leading up to Pink Shirt Day. The concept of Pink Shirt Day has expanded since it started in Nova Scotia in 2007. Some businesses and offices have joined in the effort. Many schools have Pink Shirt Day but Walnut Grove students decided they wanted to do more. The Power to Stay Away club is taking the lead and several members, all in Grade 11, sat down with the Langley Advance to discuss the issues around bullying. “We want to see change in our school,” said Grade 11 student Alexis Gordon. Sure, there will be no lack of pink
clothing at the school but they have created a three-day campaign. So there will also be pink hand prints plastered on school walls. They are antibullying pledges. The campaign started with Inside Out Day on Feb. 21 for Grades 8 and 9, followed by Inside Out Day for Grades 10 and 11 on Feb. 22. It culminates with Pink Shirt Day Feb. 23. On Inside Out Day, everyone in the schools are participating in anti-bullying efforts to promote increased understanding. The girls explained that there will be opportunity for people to discuss how bullying affects them and even acknowledge if they have been a bully. “Barriers come down,” noted Cari Andrews. “Everyone opens up.” There will be guest speakers including a man who is an actor, gay and black, and others. The guests and the campaign is all about getting to know people instead of passing judgement based on looks or other superficial elements. Such efforts are not like a vaccination – problem solved with one exposure. The girls say these sorts of efforts have to be ongoing so that everyone in a school gets the message that bullying is never okay
Heather Colpitts/Langley Advance
Walnut Grove Secondary students Christine McGuire, Alexis Gordon, Danielle Chabot, Cari Andrews, Emily Kim, Tiffany Jung and Kate Schreiner (with scissors) have been working to cut bullying out of their school. and that it will not be tolerated. In fact technology has added a new dimension to bullying – anonymity. “There’s a lot of online bullying and talking behind people’s backs,” acknowledged Danielle Chabot. Tiffany Jung added that there remains a noticeable amount of stereotyping as well, another type of bullying. In the past, people were told to suck it
up and move on, but the students noted that there are real consequences to bullying, beyond bruised feelings. “It leads to things like suicide or hurting other people,” said Christine McGuire. “It’s just a never-ending cycle.” The impacts go beond the classroom. The girls noted that people who bully as children and were not stopped may continue as adults, often in the workplace.

The woman dubbed “Langley’s dog whisperer” is holding a free afternoon dog training session this Saturday. Michelle Fahrney is holding an open house at DCT Canine Services, her training facility in Langley City, on Saturday, Feb. 26. Fahrney is trying to get her business up and running fast after a run of bad luck almost sank her. Her primary investor turned out to be a convicted sex offender – something she only found out after
she’d rented space. He pulled out his money when she confronted him after learning about his past. Since her plight was covered in the Langley Advance [Dog trainer faces financial crisis, Feb. 15], Fahrney has seen an uptick in business, said her friend Ellie King. But King is helping to organize the open house and dog training session to make certain the business stays afloat. The three free half-hour sessions will be held at 3 p.m., 4 p.m., and 5 p.m. Anyone with a dog can call 604-315-9224 to sign up, on a first come, first served basis. There are six spots in each of the three sessions. Those who want to come without a dog can watch the sessions for free. DCT Canine Services provides dog training and daycare.

Participants bask in sun February sunshine made for nearly ideal running weather for participants in this year’s Historic Half Marathon. by Troy Landreville

While participants and volunteers basked in midFebruary sunshine, the disappearance of expensive signs put a bit of a damper on Sunday’s sixth annual Fort Langley Historic Half Marathon. Special events notice signs vanished from Telegraph Trail and Glover Road, 88th Avenue and Glover Road, and Rawlison Crescent and 232nd Street, race director Mitchell Hudson reported. Each sign has a MORE price tag PHOTOS of about ONLINE $200, no small change for a community event that raises thousands for charities each year. “Maybe someone took them down by mistake,” Hudson said. “It would be fantastic to have them back.” On a sunnier note, an estimated 1,100 people participated in the run/ walk that offered half marathon, 10, and five kilometre routes along the rural roads of Fort Langley and Walnut Grove. A total of 48 youngsters put their running shoes to good use during a kids’ run Saturday inside the walls of the Fort Langley National Historic Site. Volunteers stepped up to help make the marathon ran smoothly, and a
huge number of spectators either cheered on participants along the way, or supported them as they ran towards the finish line inside the walls of the Fort itself. Hudson didn’t know the exact total at press time, but noted that “thousands” of dollars were raised to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, and BC Athletics.
Missing signs aside, it was a huge success for a marathon put on each year by Try Events. “It was another fantastic year,” Hudson said. “The weather was amazing… unbelievable. Everybody was happy and had a great time. Everything went perfectly.” If anyone knows the whereabouts of the signs, email tryevents@yahoo.ca.

Development company is at home with history
The heritage community helped keep old houses true to form. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
Heritage buildings and new development can live happily side by side. In the past, communities sometimes had to wage fights to keep what they considered valuable heritage structures. And many older structures have been demolished to make room for the new. Ironically many developers delve into the history books and use heritage elements so the outsides of their homes evoke Tudor styling or look like Craftsman exteriors. When a large area in Yorkson was pur-
chased for a Quadra Homes condo development, many expected the three little old houses would be lost, footnotes and old photos in local history books. Instead, Quadra has incorporated them into the Yorkson Creek strata development. The site will have some 1,600 strata units including 151 townhouses, 1,474 condos, and three distinctive old houses, all strata. “This was the first time we took on a project of this nature,” Shawn Bouchard, Quadra’s vice president, said about the houses. The homes were moved from their original sites on three different lots and now sit side by side along 208th Street where, along with the Willoughby Community Hall, they will create what is being called a heritage
precinct in Yorkson. The three houses have been salvaged and refurbished so they’ll have their exteriors as a nod to local history and their interiors containing modern conveniences and materials for whomever buys them. One of the structures was used as a house for many years but started out life as a church. The Township found a picture of the old church, which helped Quadra when renovating. The photo showed a more open porch and entry “so we went back to that,” Bouchard explained. The other houses, called Jones house and the Campbell residence, are smaller structures but Quadra decided all three were worth saving.
“These homes are very important to the history and residents of this area,” he said. “We wanted to do what we could to respect that.” The work was done in collaboration with the Township and the Langley Heritage Society in addition to the typical experts used at a construction site. Bouchard credits the Township and the local heritage community for making the project successful and said Quadra is open to adding these unique kinds of elements to its developments in the future. Keeping the historical integrity of the exteriors meant using a specific palette of materials, and that meant a significant investment. continued on A16…

Old houses get a new life
BOTTLE DEPOT
…continued from A15 The bill came to $20,000 for wood windows in just one house. Then there’s cedar siding and amending things such as porches and entries so they resemble the original construction. Quadra purchased a special saw blade for cutting the cedar shakes so they matched the appearance of those cut decades ago. “We absorbed it all,” Bouchard said of the cost of refurbishment. The interiors will be modernized but work went from the skeleton out. “We went right down to the bare walls,” he explained. The old studs, roof rafters, and floor joists were retained where possible and often paired with new material for stability. What will be new for these old homes is a modern convenience for whomever buys them. They will now have basements, which older Langley homes couldn’t often have. “They are 95 per cent complete,” he said. “Just finishing touches and exterior painting left.”

Work on the heritage homes was done alongside work on the rest of the large development. When it comes time to decorate the outsides of the three heritage homes, Quadra has chosen colours appropriate for their history. Bouchard said the old church will be painted red while the Jones house will be blue and Campbell house will be yellow. During refurbishment, the workers have found some glimpses of the past, with those items given to the heritage society. “We actually found a newspaper and a little comic book,” Bouchard said. The three houses will be up for sale along with

the other strata units in the development. He said the heritage houses will start at about $380,000 for the smallest one and go up from there. Soon the development will start welcoming its new residents. “We are going to market at the end of March 2011 for the first phase 171 condominiums and 23 townhomes,” Bouchard said. “We expect our first residents to move into the townhomes and the heritage homes by the end of July 2011. We expect our first residents in the condominiums by the end of May 2012.”

Let there be light – the bible says
Attack the February gloom by bringing light into your home.
One aspect of home design that all interior designers agree on is the ability of lighting to transform a space. Not sure where to begin? Grab The Home Lighting Effects Bible (Firefly Books Ltd., 256 pages), a new book by lighting specialist Lucy Martin.
Martin walks readers through the principles of good lighting, pointing out that different rooms have different lighting requirements. She explains the difference between task lighting and ambient lighting and, through colour illustrations, shows homeowners the abundance of choices available. If you get excited shopping for chandeliers, or pondering the merits of pendants versus track lighting, this is a book for you. – Postmedia Network Inc.

Do you know these people? Above is one of hundreds of old, unlabeled Langley Advance photos, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, “filed” in boxes in a storeroom, and which we have recently provided to the archives at Langley Centennial Museum. Many of the photos could be a treasure trove of local history – if they can be identified. If you have information about this photo – who’s in the picture, or when it was taken, for example – please email info@langleymuseum.org, or contact us at the Langley Advance, and we’ll ensure it gets to museum archivists.

It’s quite a climb for participants who will be going up, way up, one of B.C.’s tallest staircases – 48 floors and 739 steps tall – in support of lung health and clean air. “After about the fifth floor, all you’re doing is looking at the stair in front of you,” related Louvros, as he prepares to do the climb for a third time. “You’re just trying to As part of his training for the Stairclimb for Clean Air on Sunday, Langley resident George maintain a pace as you’re going up Louvros navigated the flights of concrete stairs on the east side of the Langley Events Centre. the stairs. With a swoop of the puck, Brad McBride clinched third place in the British Columbia Hockey League’s Coastal Conference for the Langley Chiefs. McBride’s second goal of the night gave the Chiefs a 7-6 overtime win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Friday at the Langley Events Centre. With a win necessary to seal third in the conference, the Chiefs had a battle on their hands in their regular season finale, played in front of 2,736 fans at the LEC. The visiting Silverbacks – one of the top teams in the BCHL with a 38-19-2-1 record – owned the third period, out-scoring the Chiefs 3-1 to send the contest into four-on-four overtime. McBride sent the partisan crowd home happy when, just after a Salmon Arm penalty expired, he gathered a loose puck in front of Salmon Arm goaltender Kris Moore and, while turning, slid it into the net at the 1:50 mark of the first overtime period to give the Chiefs an emotional victory. “It was probably one of the bigger goals I’ve scored,” McBride said, of his first OT winner of the season. “I’m glad we won and I was lucky it was me [who scored the game win-

Langley Chiefs goaltender Wyatt Galley stretched out to make a skate save during his team’s 7-6 overtime win over Salmon Arm Friday at the Langley Events Centre. Galley said he’s never happy with letting in six goals, but didn’t mind the workload. “It helps me get into the game that way,” he said. The Chiefs led 1-0 after the first period on a powerplay goal from McBride, who finished with two goals and two assists.
The Silverbacks scored twice early in the second period to move ahead 2-1. The Chiefs responded with goals from Josh Myers, Matt Ius, and Darnell Dyck, all scored in a span of less than five minutes, to take a 4-2 lead.

Brookswood Bobcat Hannah Loewen looked for some open space against a Walnut Grove Gators defender during the Grade 8 girls district basketball championship game, held Thursday afternoon inside the Langley Events Centre’s Arena Bowl. The Arena Bowl’s ice surface temporarily made way for the Basketball BC hard court late last week to accommodate the Langley district hoops tournament. Brookswood defeated Walnut Grove 47-34 behind an 11-point outing from Ruth Babao and seven points apiece from Audrey Periera, Maggie McFetridge, and Loewen. Walnut Grove’s top scorer was Cassie Stea with nine points. “The girls played a stronger second half after a poor performance in the first half,” Bobcats coach Ivan Adrian said. “We turned the ball over too much and were out-rebounded by a more determined Gator squad.”
