Premier-designate Christy Clark has indicated that she will want Langley’s school district finances reviewed. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
B.C. Liberal leader and premier-designate Christy Clark is well aware of problems with Langley School District’s $13.5 million deficit. “When I appoint an education minister, which I will do when I’m premier, I will ask him or her to look into the situation as soon as feasible,” she told the Langley Advance. Langley MLA Mary Polak invited the new leader of the provincial Liberal party to her sixth annual spring soiree on Friday
evening at the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre. Clark was able to stay for the pre-dinner reception. “I’m delighted to be here to support Mary,” Clark said. It was just Feb. 26 when Clark won the B.C. Liberal Party leadership. The woman who was education minister for almost three years, starting in 2001, said it’s her understanding that the school district is handling the deficit situation. But if she’s elected as premier, she will have it looked into, to put her mind at ease. Langley is expected to be a frequent stomping ground for the new premierdesignate. The hockey parent brings her son here for goalie training. “I’m often in Langley,” Clark noted.

Stores looted in Aldergrove One woman was arrested, three more suspects are sought. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
A woman was the lone suspect arrested after a group of thieves went on a brief smash-and-grab spree in Aldergrove Sunday morning.
At about 6:30 a.m., someone smashed the glass at Chic Nails and The Source in the 27500 block of Fraser Highway, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. A witness said he had seen several men and one woman inside the store. Police believe items from iPods to GPS devices to video games were boosted. One of the Mounties on the scene began patrolling
and found a woman walking north from behind the strip mall, towards Fraser Highway. She has been arrested, and after investigation the 28-year-old is facing charges of break and enter and theft. No stolen property was found on the woman. Police are still trying to identify the other three men. Anyone with information, can call the RCMP at 604-532-3200.
A new zoo director means new animal enrichment activities.
The Greater Vancouver Zoo’s new director is settling down after studying animals in the wild for more than 20 years. Christoph Steeger is a professional biologist who has worked on the conservation of endangered species such as the mountain caribou, Williamson’s sapsucker, the great blue heron, and various reptile species, said zoo spokesperson Jody Henderson. “Our plan for the near future is to create new and exciting animal exhibits, conservation and education programs, and improvements to the zoo’s infrastructure,” said Steeger. “Our ultimate goal is for Greater Vancouver Zoo to become a leader in conservation, a community centre for our local and provincial residents, and a prime destination for our visitors and tourists from afar.” Steeger will help the zoo prepare for its next accreditation inspection by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) which will take place in 2012. CAZA membership is essential for zoos in B.C., as recently changed wildlife laws mean that a zoo could not publicly display exotic animals if its accreditation was removed. The zoo lost its CAZA accreditation in the past over issues with a few enclosures, but has regained it and maintained its membership for the past several years. Steeger will also oversee a complete facelift of the animal nutrition and enrichment programs, Henderson said. An animal nutrition specialist has been hired for the task. Enrichment includes a variety of activities designed to keep animals mentally and physically stimulated. It may mean toys or new items in animal enclosures. Henderson said the zoo will keep the public up to date on some of its enrichment projects, so they can watch them unfold. Structural changes, including new fences, a new education centre, and improved animal enclosures, are all expected in the coming months and years.

Coroner offers no recommendations in suicide case review
The final report on the death of Frank Frechette was completed this week. by Matthew Claxton
mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
A coroner’s jury made no recommendations last week, after ruling that Frank Frechette
caused his own death in a bizarre case of suicide. Frechette, 49, died on Sept. 30, 2008, following a botched bank robbery and what may have been heavy drug use. The Langley City man had held up the Royal Bank branch in Brookswood with a shotgun, then drove home with his wife, Trina Toffan. But the money was ruined by
an exploding dye pack mixed in with the cash by bank tellers. When Frechette got home, he stripped naked and washed off the red dye, then stabbed himself twice in the chest. After screaming and telling his wife he loved her, Frechette threw himself through the plate glass window on the upper floor of their home. He landed on the lawn in front
of several startled RCMP officers. The officers ordered Frechette to lie down, but he asked them to shoot him. When he tried to go back inside the home, they shocked him with a Taser. A pathologist testified that with such wounds, some people survive with prompt medical attention, while others die no matter how quickly they get to a doctor.
The three-day inquest heard from a number of people connected to the strange case, including Frechette’s widow Toffan, the man who tailed him from the bank robbery and called police, several RCMP officers, and medical professionals. An inquest was called into Frechette’s death because he had died while he was in police custody.

“Grease” was the word Wednesday at the Langley Sportsplex. The sound of the title track from the 1978 throwback film Grease filled the air of one of the Sportsplex’s ice rinks, while Langley Figure Skating Club members, dressed in 1950s garb, rehearsed for “Ice, Camera, Action – LFSC Goes Hollywood.” The club’s bi-annual year-end ice extravaganza runs this Saturday at the George Preston Recreation Centre, with showtimes of 1 and 7 p.m. Rob Woodley, a coach with the LFSC, calls the show “a big highlight of the year.” “There’s a lot of work that goes into it,” he said, taking a breather while standing in the players’ bench during the rehearsal. “The skaters, as you can see from the smiles on their faces, they love it.” The 180 skaters scheduled to take to the ice Saturday range in age from three to, Woodley said, “20ish.” Planning began in late October, with more than 100 volunteers lending their talents to the show. “There’s a lot of work to Ice Camera Action – LFSC be done behind the scenes Goes Hollywood! with dressing rooms and What: Langley Figure Skating security and putting all Club’s bi-annual show the costumes together,” When: Saturday, March 12. he said. “You sometimes Showtimes are 1 and 7 p.m. can’t see the light at the Where: George Preston end of the tunnel but Recreation Centre when you get out there, Tickets: $12 for adults, $8 for it’s all worth it.” senior/youth, $5 for children (3Woodley has been with 12) and free for children two and LFSC for nine years and under if they are not occupying this will be his fourth ice a seat. show, so you’d think it would be old hat for him. Yet he said he feels the butterflies flip flop in his belly the day of each show he’s been involved with. “You’re always nervous,” he said. “The fear of the unknown. But we prepare ourselves as much as we can.” Part of that preparation is giving skaters advice on what to do if they stumble or fall, an often inevitable byproduct of turning, twirling, and jumping using quarter inch steel blades on a slippery surface. “We have a lot of falls in practice, so we teach them what to do if that happens and how to deal with it,” he said. “And just to have fun. You’ve gotta have fun.” This year’s theme is a nod to the silver screen. “We don’t want to be copying anybody else, we don’t want to be repeating anything we’ve done, but we have a lot of different ideas,” Woodley said. “I had a page full of ideas we went through. We arrived on movies this year because we thought it would be fun.” Tickets are being sold at all LFSC Canskate sessions and can also be had at the George Preston Recreation Centre during office hours. Ticket prices are $12 each for adults, $8 for seniors and youth, and $5 for children between the ages of three and 12. Children under two are free when they are not occupying a seat. As well, tickets are being sold at the door on the day of the event and are available 45 minutes prior to both shows.

Led by founder Lyda Salatian, the team’s first event was at the South Langley park, pulling invasive weeds. “We want to make a positive impact on our natural environment,” Salatian said. “I’m a former Langley resident and love Campbell Valley Park.” The Green Team is a group of volunteers from across the Lower Mainland who get together once a month (sometimes more often) to help an environmental group, non-profit organization, charity, or city tackle an environmental issue. Over the weekend, tools and gloves were supplied, as were muffins by Cravings Coffee & Bakery. The Green Team members were encouraged to not only pull ivy, but also another well known and ever-present local invader, blackberries. Following the pull, each volunteer was handed a product, with

Thieves tossed a huge chunk of concrete through a store window, but were caught making their getaway. The thieves took merchandise including high-end North Face gear and electronics such as GPS devices, and piled it in the back of the van. Police estimated at least $27,000 worth of goods were taken. “It’s into the tens of thousands [of dollars],” Friesen said. Some of that stolen gear spilled out of the back of the van as the thieves tried to make their getaway, Friesen said. However, it sounds like his store will be getting most of it back. The store was open again on Monday morning, with the only evidence of the break-in a piece of plywood covering one window. Friesen notes that in most cases, thieves who do these smash-and-grab style robberies get away. “I was very happy to see they were caught,” he said. The three suspects, a 47-year-old Surrey man, a 27-year-old from Nanaimo, and a 29-year-old of no fixed address, remained in police custody Monday. All three face possible charges of breaking and entering and possession of stolen property.

It took police just 20 minutes to track down and catch the thieves who smashed their way into a Langley sporting goods store Sunday night. At about 10:20 p.m., a thief heaved a large chunk of concrete through one of the front windows at the Atmosphere Store on the Langley Bypass near 200th Street. They pulled up a mini-van to the new gap and started throwing stuff in the back, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Langley RCMP. Store manager Mike Friesen said he got the call by 10:30 from the alarm company and was at the store within five minutes. The store’s Sonitrol alarm had gone off when the brick went through the window. Joe Wilson of Sonitrol Canada said his company’s alarms are all verified, which helps police improve their response time. The police had made it to the store before Friesen, and were already tracking down the crooks. The van was spotted and followed by police, then lost heading north. Patrols picked it up again in Walnut Grove where three men inside were arrested without incident, Marks said. A combination of early warning by the alarm system, and a witness in the parking lot, helped them catch the crooks, Friesen said.

Goal still equal Today marks the 100 anniversary of the first International Women’s Day. First celebrated as an international event on March 19, 1911, International Working Women’s Day had been proposed nearly a year earlier, at an international women’s conference in Denmark, as a day to fight for the rights of women in the workplace and on the political stage. At the time, few women anywhere had the right to hold public office, or even to vote in democratic elections. A century later, we see unquestionable progress towards gender equality in countries like Canada, the United States, most of Europe, and elsewhere. And yet, on a truly international level, there are still millions of women in dozens of countries who have no more rights than they did hundreds of years ago. Indeed, in many parts of the world, women still have no right to vote or even to voice their own opinions without fear of physical or even fatal reprisal, if not always sanctioned by law, then often with its tacit approval. Although it is no longer permissible in North America for a man to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb (the infamous “rule of thumb”), violence against women continues. In Canada, a woman is more likely to be murdered by her own spouse than she is to be the fatal victim of a robbery or other non-domestic criminal incident. Despite the achievements towards gender equality in this country since 1911, women are still less likely to be accepted in important political positions. Why should it have been such a remarkable aspect of Christy Clark’s victory in the BC Liberal party’s leadership contest that she is a woman? Only one woman before has been entrusted with B.C.’s premiership – for a short time. And employers who mark International Women’s Day today by leaving a rose on their secretary’s desk should consider what else they might do instead, to work towards the gender equality that continues to elude women on this 100th anniversary of their special day. – B.G.

Firefighters
Chief answers desperate call Dear Editor, I am a disabled fellow reliant on a wheelchair for mobility. Last Friday, I was driving down Fraser Highway. I stopped at a red light – and so did my truck. It died, would not turn over, nothing. I turned on my four-way flashers and said to myself, “Now what?” My wheelchair was in the rear of my truck, and though I have a crane to lift it out, I had traffic lanes on either side of my truck. Not knowing what else to do, I started to wave my disabled parking placard out the window, hoping for some assistance. Lots of drivers saw what I was doing, but no one stopped. I was hoping someone would at least help me get out of the intersection. At a loss, I looked to my right, and there was a fire truck, I honked my horn and waved my placard. The driver saw my predicament immediately. He got behind me with his flashers on. He came to my window, and I felt relief right away. He was by himself. At first he wanted to push the truck out of the intersection, but it is a big truck, and it would have been dangerous. So he got my wheelchair out of the back of my truck. I got into it and went to his truck. Of course, I couldn’t get into his
truck, because of the height, but he said no problem, picked me up, and put me into his truck. Once in his truck, he turned on the heat (I had no coat – there’s a lesson, right there). He called a tow truck, and we stayed there till it came. His name is Brian. He is a fire chief. I missed his last name. After the tow truck came and everything was under control, he drove me home. When I thanked him, Brian said, “See, we aren’t all bad.” I want Brian to know that I don’t think any firefighter is bad, and I will never forget the help he gave me that day. Mark Stenberg, Langley

Dogs a gift from God
Dear Editor, Yes indeed, sir, actually, bravo! Animals are created as humans are created [Animals as created as people, March 4 Letters, Langley Advance]. I, being a Christian, do believe that. The fact that the dogs were killed is a tremendously evil act. Dogs have a special bond with humans, and have for thousands of years. We should take care of them, as they are a gift from God. Yes, abortion is disturbing as well, yet let’s not lose sight of how horrible one act is, just because another might be equally horrible. Faith and religion are not the same. Faith is a relationship; religion is rules. It’s our relationships with those around us that must reflect our relationship with God, even if it’s with dogs. Robert Eby, Aldergrove
tion business, and find this to be a shockingly low number, since the two Langleys have more than 1,500 rooms available every day of the year. That means 554 is only one tenth of one per cent of the 547,500 rooms available in a year. Further, I understand that Tourism Langley is spending $500,000 a year. Those are tax dollars in large part collected from hotel room accommodation. Assuming all 554 persons who inquired about accommodation actually stayed in a room in Langley, it would appear that Tourism Langley is spending $1,000 per night accommodation to fill a single room. And it’s not even filling the available rooms for one night in the year. This is incredible. Wally Martin, Langley

With the state of the economy, and many Canadians out of work, why on earth has a decision been made to spend so wastefully? Surely, there are already build-

If the government is truly concerned about its citizens, it is outrageous that such an irresponsible decision has been made. Stabbing suspect found drunk A man was stabbed in the neck outside a Langley City pub Monday. Just after midnight on March 7, police were called to the Baselines Pub in the 20300 block of Fraser Highway. They found two men lying on top of a third man, all piled in the middle of the street, said Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the local RCMP. “All parties appeared to be quite intoxicated,” Marks said.
The man pinned to the ground was the apparent attacker. One of the other men, a 23-year-old, was bleeding from the neck, and said the man on the ground had stabbed him. The 29-year-old suspect was holding a small knife, which was taken by police. The alleged attacker was arrested and faces a possible assault charge. The victim was treated at hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.

A 26-year-old housepainter from Langley has been put on 30 months probation after admitting he snuck into a nanny’s suite in a West Vancouver home and filmed himself masturbating with her camera. Stephen Jacob Faulkner later told police he thought the woman had been flirting with him and “I just took it to a whole other level.” When the nanny returned to the home and found the video on her camera, she was shocked and went to police. A judge handed the probation and a suspended sentence to Faulkner on Monday after he pleaded guilty in North Vancouver provincial court to being unlawfully in a dwelling. Crown counsel Linda Ostry said Faulkner was part of a painting crew hired to paint the exterior of a West Vancouver home last August while the family who lived there was away. Windows and doors were left unlocked so the trim could be painted, she said, but no permission was given for the painters to go inside the home.
When the family returned home, the nanny was packing for a trip and found her camera wasn’t in her purse, where it usually was, but was in a desk drawer instead. When she played back the video, the woman was shocked and recognized Faulkner immediately. Ostry added the whole family was “very disturbed” by the incident. Faulkner spoke to police soon after, telling them “I have a sexual problem that I’m trying to deal with,” and acknowledging his actions were “not something that’s normal.” He added he was very ashamed. Faulkner was fired from the painting company and his final paycheque was used to buy the nanny a new camera and bedding. “She did not want the camera back,” said Ostry. “She did not want to touch it again.” The judge ordered Faulkner to take counselling while on probation. She also banned him from possession of pornography and from sending or posting any sexually explicit material on any electronic media.

Weather wild in City by Brett Bonderud and Matthew Claxton news@langleyadvance.com
The high winds that roared through Langley City last week had emergency crews scrambling. “It was the busiest we’ve been in five years,” assistant City fire chief, Peter Methot said. There were “multiple events” going at once. Fire personnel in the City answered 40 calls in three days ranging from downed power lines, electrical outages, traffic incidents and people trapped in elevators. Crews also had to deal with a power pole that was leaning on Fraser Highway. The station normally answers six to eight calls in a 24-hour period. The Langleys also suffered a major power failure Thursday due to lightning. The lightning struck a line near Michaud Crescent, knocking out power to 9,000 homes.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
