Starting today, the Langley Events Centre will be the centre of B.C.’s high school basketball universe. From March 15 to 19, the top 20 Triple A senior boys teams in B.C. will gather at the LEC for what many consider to be the most prestigious annual hoops tourney in the province. The B.C. Triple-A high school boys basketball championships have arrived at the multi-sport facility in Willoughby, marking the first time in its 66-year history that the tournament will be held in the Fraser Valley. The tournament, which began in 1946 in New Westminster and has had its championship final day held exclusively in Vancouver since the early-1950s, has for most of the past three decades been staged at the PNE Agrodome. In 1996 and ’97, the tournament was staged at GM Place (now Rogers Arena) before shifting back to the Agrodome.

He said the tournament is not only significant for the roughly 240 players involved, but equally so for the coaches, managers, 100 or so high school players taking part in the annual three-point shot contest, as many as 75 student-volunteers tasked with scoring, timekeeping and officiating, cheerleaders, and thousands of spectators. Through four decades of involvement, Buis has seen a lot of changes not only with the fashion, lingo, and hairstyles, but also the pace and style of play on the hard court. “Not only has the games changed – the kids are bigger, stronger, and faster – but the playing of the games have changed as well,” he said.

A pair of non-profit groups are calling on Rich Coleman to be replaced as the minister responsible for gaming. The BC Association for Charitable Gaming, and the Alliance for Arts and Culture say there is a lack of confidence in Coleman. They cited his failure to meet with charities over cuts in gaming grants. The driver of a pickup truck sent flying off the Langley Bypass died in hospital Sunday, two days after the crash. Harold Hammond, of Hammond Towing, was at the wheel of the blue pickup truck heading east near the 20500 block of the bypass. Langley police say a large white delivery van apparently made an illegal left hand turn, striking the pickup and sending both cars spinning. Hammond’s pickup flew into the ditch on the south side of the road, near a car dealership. Both vehicles spun and flew off the road after the crash. The white van shed parts across dozens of feet of the roadway before coming to rest in the middle of the Bypass. The van driver and his passenger were taken to Royal Columbian Hospital for treatment. Doctor’s qualifications questioned

Errors in reading CT scans by a Fraser Valley doctor has raised a red flag. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

Patients in Langley and Maple Ridge may be getting a call about the CT scans due to problems with a radiologist. Fraser Health is looking at 407 scans made in Ridge Meadows Hospital, between November 2010 and March 4 of this year, along with 96 from Langley Memorial from 2008 and 2009. His previous work on mammograms was reviewed, said David Plug, a spokesperson for the Fraser Health Authority. The doctor, who has not been named, went to Europe for further training, then returned and began working in Ridge Meadows Hospital in November 2010. He worked there until a week ago. A regular quarterly review of his work turned up problems with CT scans. So far, discrepancies have been found in 11 out of several hundred scans, Plug said. A vast number of

Patients who do have concerns or want to know more about the review should call 604-851-4700, ext. 646617. The number will put people in touch with the radiology department at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. An investigation into problematic scans and unqualified radiologists is underway. Locals frantic to hear news

One local service club has special boxes ready to go to help Japan earthquake victims. For those from Japan or with relatives overseas, the past few days have been a frantic effort to make certain their loves ones are safe. A number of Japanese students are visiting Langley as participants in the International Student Program through local schools. By Monday, all of them had managed to get in touch with their families back home, and all their families were safe, said Craig Spence, spokesperson for the Langley School District. Other former Langley residents living in Japan have been in contact with their families as well. Township Councillor Jordan Bateman has an uncle, aunt, and cousin living in Japan, and reported that all were well. Former federal NDP candidate Andrew Claxton has been living in Yokohama for more than a year, and while his neighbourhood lost power temporarily, he and his friends all made it through the quake. The devastation of the Japan earthquake and tsunami has local people wondering how they can help B.C.’s neighbours to the west. “Every donation Kathleen Thain, with the helps and they Rotary Club of Langley, has add up.” put out a plea, offering a way to put a roof over people’s Kathleen Thain heads. Authorities in Japan estimate that more than 200,000 people were forced to flee their homes and need emergency shelter. Rotary International has created Shelter Boxes, packages that contain a tent for shelter and other supplies (basic tools, blankets, a small stove, basic first aid supplies and even a small toy for children). Each box costs about $1,000 to stock and transport to emergency areas around the world. “Reach out to your local Rotarians and ask how you can donate to get these shelter boxes to where they can make the difference,” Thain said. “These boxes are great and Rotary have sent many to Haiti and New Zealand after those quakes/disasters. Every donation helps and they add up.” Shelter Box Response Teams were on the ground in Japan less than 24 hours after the quake, working with local authorities. More information is at shelterboxcanada.org. Many Canadians are also making contributions through the Canadian Red Cross. An easy way is to use a cellphone and text REDCROSS to 30333 to contribute $5, which is added to the phone bill. Or people can use other methods such as redcross.ca or by calling 1-800418-1111. The federal government has encouraged people to contribute only to registered charities to prevent fraud.

Slim cabinet not a bad sign Just as the flowers burst from the ground at the first sign of spring in Victoria, so too have the new shoots of a provincial cabinet come into view. It’s a time for political renewal, with Premier Christy Clark taking the oath of office, and then appointing a team of 17 caucus members. The most notable thing about this cabinet is its simplicity. Responsibility for health is not scattered across two, or three, or four ministries. Instead there is Michael de Jong, minister for health, full stop. Likewise, Blair Lekstrom takes Transportation and Infrastructure, Agriculture goes to Don McRae, and Kevin Falcon holds posts as minister of finance and as premier’s deputy. With George Abbott in Education, that puts all of Clark’s rivals for the party leadership in senior positions. So far, Clark has shown a desire for simplicity, and no inclination to seek revenge for the events of the campaign. Those are both laudable. Locally, we notice that Rich Coleman, MLA for Fort Langley-Aldergrove, gets to keep his work on housing, but will also be in charge of Mining and Energy. The former forests minister has a penchant for taking on big, resource-based ministries, so will likely be at home here. And the environmental activists with concerns about toxic tailing ponds or offshore oil drilling will find a familiar antagonist. Mary Polak of the Langley riding has been moved from the tricky, sensitive post overseeing Children and Families, to the tricky, sensitive post overseeing Aboriginal Relations. Polak should feel right at home, at least as far as crisis management goes. As cabinets go, it’s not bad. But the true test always comes in the first crisis. Hopefully, it will be a gentle one, so that the cabinet is tested, but not tested to destruction. That would not serve anyone in B.C., Liberal, NDP or other, very well. – M.C.

Amalgamation

Money savings over-rated

Dear Editor, The amalgamation debate has once again become the topic du jour in the Langleys. If achieved, the implications will be extraordinary, as amalgamation changes landscapes, both economic and political, and not necessarily in a positive manner. While debate is vital and healthy, it is regrettable that those adding to the discussion often fail in providing any supporting evidence that amalgamation pays dividends for taxpayers. Instead they employ the Nike axiom: “Just Do it.” If amalgamation occurs, the reduction in local representation, particularly for residents within the City of Langley, will be severe, and one may argue, unjustifiable when considering the finite savings that

%U"3 HUN4 S"0 8""S HUN -J-8" -77 X9<;0 E'G,D'^\M!]6

may be realized due to one less council. Moreover, the cuts to the bureaucracy may not achieve the economies of scale that believers in amalgamation propagate. Alternatives, such as shared-service agreements, may better serve the public. Interestingly, the concept of de-amalgamation has grown in Quebec. We encourage residents to visit www. cupe403.ca and read more about amalgamation. We also encourage residents to consider the many sources and studies within academia, prior to making a final decision. Langley Township

Dear Editor, I read with disgust and disbelief that the Township has decided to still enforce its bylaw dictating to property owners what and where they can store their property on their land. The Township knows it is

a cash grab. Even Councillor Steve Ferguson said, “It will not appease anyone.” Why would it? Forcing RV, trailer, and boat owners to park their property – for hundreds of dollars a month – at a storage facility, not able to easily access it or

Visitors book rooms online

Dear Editor, I don’t know what branch of the “accommodation business” Mr. Martin is in [Room left for improvements, March 8 Letters, Langley Advance], but I suggest he fast-forward to the 21st century. Every day around the world, millions of people book hotel rooms on the internet at sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, etc. without ever having to contact Tourism Langley. It is silly to think that Tourism Langley spends $500,000 a year to simply answer accommodation questions. Bending statistics is easy when one can’t see further than the end of one’s pencil. Mark P. Helpless infants slaughtered

Dear Editor, Dean Clark [Babies are better than animals, March 1 Letters, Advance] was comparing the outcry of people about the inhumane slaughtering of dogs, and rightly so, to the slaughter of tiny helpless infants every day in Canada, over which there is dead silence. Where are our values? Where does Mr. Erbacher get his evidence that we evolved and were not created [All creatures equally not created, March 11 Letters, Advance]? The popular viewpoint is that religion is belief and evolution is science, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. David J. know if it is getting vandalized, what did they expect? Once again, the Township has failed to see the real issue. It comes down to ownership. My property; my trailer. The fact the Township has tried to appease owners of trailers, RVs, and boats by allowing them to be parked May 15 to Sept. 15 is not only a sad joke, but further proves that there is really no issue here at all. If the issue is about other home owners (incorrectly) believing that a neighbour’s trailer lowers their property value, I find it laughable that the bylaw allows them to stay in the driveways during prime real estate-selling time. It is a long time overdue for meddling people and meddling government to mind their own business. I do own my property (I do hold legal title to it) and I do own my trailer, and I plan on continue exercising my right to park my trailer anywhere on my property anytime, and I strongly urge all citizens of Langley to do the same – fight the stupidity of this by-law, and if you are of the minority of citizens who think otherwise, please start minding your own business, the Township included. Dear Editor, Langley School Board has recommended that the staff undertake consultation with the community regarding the proposed changes to the 2011-2012 school year, with the suggested cuts in the number of education days in the school year [Fewer days, longer hours, Feb. 25, Langley Advance]. Reducing the number of instructional days to 180 per year will mean Langley students will have the benefit of interacting with their assigned instructors 49.32 per cent of

the year to cover the assigned curriculum. Not all students will be able to effectively integrate portions of the curriculum that will have to be segmented into the time that will have to be added into the instructional time of each school day. I urge all Langley residents to actively partake in these consultations that are slated to close on April 11. Ilona Pretorius, Langley For more letters to the editor visit... www.langleyadvance.com

Coming event

Lower Mainland Quarter Horse Association’s Horseman’s Bazaar and Country Fair on Sunday is a chance to pick up tack, get reacquainted with old friends, and make new friends who share an interest in horses. It’s also a chance for the community to learn about horse culture and enjoy some demonstrations of horses and even trained dogs. The LMQHA Bazaar and Country Fair has been a long standing tradition in the horse community for decades, anticipated by many every year. Operated entirely by volunteers, those who are part of the Bazaar Team see it as a way to give back to the industry. This year they are thrilled to be able to offer clinicians and demonstrations that are appealing to a wide range of disciplines and experience levels. Returning this year are the staples of the event: the largest used tack sale in Western Canada (runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), the youth bake table, trade show booths, trailers, tractors, and more. With admission $5 this year and kids eight and under being free, the LMQHA horseman’s bazaar should be fun for the whole herd. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 20 at Thunderbird Show Park, 24450 72nd Ave. For more information contact bazaar coordinator Terri Brown at 604541-0511 or bazaar chair Jenn Merriam at 604-534-1976. Captain Kirk visits Pastime

Former Vancouver Canucks starting goaltender Kirk McLean (far left) and Pastime Sports & Games owner Ken Richardson held a photo from the 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs that has become iconic to Canucks fans. It shows bloodied former Canuck captain Trevor Linden hugging McLean following a game six victory over the New York Rangers during the ’94 Stanley Cup final series. McLean, who backstopped the Canucks to within a win of the Stanley Cup that year, visited the sports and memorabilia store in Langley City on Saturday to sign autographs to benefit BC Children’s Hospital. Between 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, Canucks centre Ryan Kesler will sign autographs at Pastime, with proceeds going to the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association Burn Fund.

Consumers

Online ticket prices jacked up by Peter Birnie Postmedia Network Inc.

A warning to all horse lovers: look this one in the mouth. Tickets for Cavalia, the equestrian spectacle set to open in Vancouver on March 22, should only be purchased through the official website at www. cavalia.net. If people instead Google “tickets to Cavalia,” a host of links each lead to a flood of “bargain” ticket agents, where they may be ripped off royally. Langley horse lover Dixie Jacobson found out the hard way that gotthetix.com, ticketzoom. com, tickettango.com and many, many other websites are busy charging people two or three

times what they should be paying. She spent $2,305.12 on tickets to Cavalia that would have cost far less if she’d not been tricked. “I cancelled my credit card and it’s been referred to the fraud line, so if it’s proven to be a fraudulent act I’ll get my money back,” Jacobson said Monday. “But you know what? I’m just so angry. My daughter and son-in-law train horses at Hastings Park, I live on a thoroughbred farm in Langley and they live next door with my sevenyear-old granddaughter, who’s totally in love with horses. We were going to rent a limo and do the whole VIP thing.” The top price for a Cavalia ticket is $189.50,

and that includes horsd’oeuvres before the show, desserts and coffee at intermission and a visit to the stables after the show. Instead, Jacobson paid $312. Try calling one of these U.S. ticket operations and you’ll hear this: “We are a secondarymarket ticket provider and are not affiliated with any venue, box office or primary ticketing services. Our ticket prices will not match the face-value of tickets you purchase through primary ticketing services, and all sales are final.” In other words, buyer beware.

The consultation process has begun to bring public input into proposed Langley school calendar changes.

If approved, the six-day reduction in the school year would come from adding non-instructional days to the Monday after Remembrance Day, and extending spring break from one to two weeks. The scheduling change would add 10 minutes per day to elementary school schedules (K-Grade 7) and 12 minutes by Brett Bonderud to secondary school schedules (Grades news@langleyadvance.com 8-12). When word came down about the annual B.C. Triple-A high school boys basketball championships moving to the Langley Events Centre, equal parts pressure and incentive were heaped on the Walnut Grove Gators. “We better practise more and get motivated to go to the LEC,” Gators veteran head coach George Bergen told the Langley Advance last May, following the announcement. Skip ahead 10 months, and what many consider to be the most prestigious annual basketball tournament – high school or otherwise – in B.C. is finally upon us. And the Gators are in the mix. “In the back of everyone’s mind, that [making it to the B.C. tournament] is always the goal,” Bergen said. Chiefs facing do-or-die

Langley won game five Sunday at South Surrey Arena. by Troy Landreville sports@langleyadvance.com

Heading into last night’s game at the Langley Events Centre, the Langley Chiefs were fighting for their playoff lives. If the Surrey Eagles beat the Chiefs, they will win the best-of-seven, British Columbia Hockey League series four games to two. If the Chiefs won, they’ll extend the series to a seventh game tonight, Tuesday, at South Surrey Arena. (Watch for the game result at www.langleyadvance.com). The Chiefs have nothing to lose but their season, so the game plan heading into Monday night was to pin their ears back and play their derrieres’ off, while somehow keeping their emotions in check. “We’ve got to play solid defensively and keep the mind working as well as the heart and the legs, and make sure we’re under control,” Chiefs head coach Harvey Smyl told the Langley Advance Monday morning. The Chiefs will go into the potential elimination game without the services of centre Josh Myers, who led the team in goals (40) and points (80) during the regular season. Myers was serving the second game of a three-game suspension after he was charged

Ius scored twice and tacked on three assists. The Chiefs led 2-0 after the first period and 5-3 after two periods of play. After Langley captain Trevor Gerling scored on a powerplay to make it 63 just 35 seconds into the third period, the Eagles rallied with a pair of goals to narrow the deficit to 6-5. Ius sealed the win with an empty net marker 45 seconds before the end of regulation. Gerling’s goal chased goaltender Karel St-Laurent from the Surrey net. Kit Sitterley, with two, along with defencemen Ryan Bakken and Tim Daly, scored the other Langley goals. Chiefs centre Brandon Thompson notched four assists. continued on page A18…

University men’s basketball

Spartans fall to Carleton in CIS gold medal game The Carleton University Ravens returned to the top of the CIS men’s basketball world on Sunday with a convincing 82-59 gold medal win over the Trinity Western University Spartans at the Halifax Metro Centre. It marked the seventh W.P. McGee Trophy triumph in nine years – and the seventh in history – for the Ravens, who extended their winning streak at the

Metro Centre to 20 straight games dating back to a 78-77 quarter-final loss to McMaster in 2001. Carleton’s Tyson Hinz received the Jack Donohue Trophy as tournament MVP, three days after being named CIS player of the year. Elliot Thompson earned player-of-the-game honours in the title match after scoring a game-high 19 points.

Chiefs lose in double OT

…continued from page A18 Eagles 3, Chiefs 2 (double overtime) Friday at the LEC, Jeff Vanderlugt scored 8:13 into the second overtime period to lift the Eagles to victory. The Eagles’ Richard Vanderhoek tallied the lone goal of the first period and then added to his team’s lead on a powerplay at the 8:08 mark of the second frame. The Chiefs rallied with goals from Thompson, almost midway through the second period, and Brad McBride 1:23 into the third stanza to tie the game 2-2. Chiefs goaltender Wyatt Galley had a fine game in a losing cause. He stopped Surrey captain Tyler Morley on a breakaway off the opening face-off of the first overtime period. Eagles 4, Chiefs 3 The Eagles built a 4-1 lead after two periods before the Chiefs scored a pair of beauties to make it interesting. Gerling walked in alone before beating St-Laurent 4:11 into the third period to make it 4-2. Then, with his team shorthanded, Myers stole the puck at the blueline and left the Surrey defenders in his wake before finding the net at the nine-minute mark. That was as close as the Chiefs would come as the Eagles eked out a one-goal victory.

He joined Hinz on the tournament all-star team. The Spartans earned the wildcard and entered the tourney as the No. 5 seed after finishing third at the Canada West Final Four. “We learned something today about the intensity level required to win a championship,” said head coach Scott Allen, in his third season at the helm at TWU. “We had a good game plan but we underestimated how physical they would be on defence. Full credit to them, they’re a machine.”

First-team all-Canadian forward Jacob Doerksen paced Trinity Western with a 16-point, 12 rebound double-double. TWU’s Kyle Coston added 13 points and nine boards in the losing cause. Both Doerksen and Coston were chosen tournament all-stars. Carleton led 26-17 after the first quarter, 49-31 at halftime, and 60-44 after 30 minutes. Trinity Western was never able to cut the deficit to less than a dozen in the fourth quarter.

Carleton led by as much as 24 on two occasions in the final two minutes. ••• Coston drained a threepoint shot with 11.6 seconds remaining as Spartans erased a 16-point second quarter deficit to upset the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds 74-72 in the first semifinal Saturday at the Halifax Metro Centre. The Canada West champion Thunderbirds had reached the CIS final each of the past two years. Coston, a 6’8” forward from Blaine, Wash., who

is in his first season with TWU after coming over from Portland State, added a team-high 12 rebounds and was named TWU player of the game for the second straight day. “It feels amazing. I’ve played in big games before. I played in two March Madness tournaments with Portland State. But to hit an important shot like that on such a big stage, it’s pretty amazing” Coston said.

Initiation hockey

Puck about to drop for Jordan’s tourney Dedicated to the memory of a young boy who loved hockey, the event kicks off with a coaches game March 17.

The Jordan Owens Memorial Spring Initiation Tournament is just days away. The hockey tournament for five- to eight-year-old boys and girls takes place at the Langley Sportplex and runs March 18-22. The tourney is dedicated to the memory of Jordan Owens, a boy who displayed tremendous courage

and willpower fighting cancer. His love of hockey will be remembered through the annual event that will attract 500 players. The two main goals of this tournament are for the players to have fun and to give back and raise money for BC Children’s Hospital. Last year’s tournament generated $15,000 for the cause. The tournament kicks off with the coaches’ game Thursday, March 17 at 6:15 p.m. at the Langley Sportsplex. Players in the Langley Minor Hockey Initiation divisions will have a chance to cheer on their coaches until 8:30 p.m.

Applications to play in the coaches’ game have proved so overwhelming that organizers have had to extend the game time by an hour to ensure that each coach and assistant – at last count 44 of them – gets to show off his skills in front of their Initiation teams. Players from the 21 Langley Minor Hockey Association initiation teams will be in the stands to cheer on their coaches during this two-hour friendly game. Prior to the coaches’ game, six H4 Langley players will be honoured for their sportsmanship and overall positive spirit with a Team Player Award.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Gators will use defence-first game plan

…continued from page A16 “There are four or five really good teams – we are a very good team – and we weren’t completely firing on all cylinders in the semifinal and lost to Mouat,” Bergen said. Looking ahead, Bergen is happy the Gators don’t have to endure the morning crawl across the Port Mann Bridge to make it to the PNE’s Agrodome for a morning game, like they did during the 2010 provincials. “I’m very relieved we don’t have to do that again, seeing that we’re five minutes away,” Bergen said. “Last year, we got up at quarter after five [in the morning] to get there on time for an 8:30 game.” While most of the Gators live mere minutes from the LEC, they will travel as a unit. “No way!” Bergen responded, when asked if the players will find their own way to the LEC. “It’s a

team bus and we’re all going on the team bus.” Once the Gators hit the provincial hardwood, Blyth said, their success will be driven by playing an aggressive, defence-first style. “Our offence comes right through our defence,” the 6’4” Blyth said. “Hard-nosed defensive rebounding and transition is really how we are going to define ourselves in the provincials.” As for the Gators’ first foe, Blyth said, “I know Van College will press us a lot and we want to take advantage of that and fast break and score. We want to take them out of their comfort zone.” He added, “You have to approach one quarter at a time and not look at the whole game. Coach always says you have to win every quarter by one point. To be honest, we’re not looking past the first game.”

And while each team is guaranteed four games, Blyth wants to make every moment count, starting with the match-up against Van College. “We want to be on the winner’s side of the draw,” he said. “We don’t want to be playing for 15th place. Obviously our goals are high, we want to do the best we can, but we’re just looking at the first game right now.” Bergen isn’t making predictions, other than saying his players are “going to have fun, and play hard. Whatever happens after that, happens.” Tsai said playing so close to home works to the Gators’ advantage. “We can get all our fans out,” he said. “I think for Wednesday [when Walnut Grove opens against Van College], we have four buses [full of Gators supporters] booked. It motivates us; it gets us excited.”
