The fate of a Langley toddler is uncertain, after she fell from the second-storey window of her family’s Willoughby home Sunday afternoon. The unconscious three-yearold child was airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital with suspected internal injuries, along with a broken arm and leg, after what police are describing as an accident about 2 p.m. Police were reporting she’s responsive. On Monday, the RCMP said there was no update on the child’s condition. Two sibling girls, ages seven and three, were playing on a window seat of the parent’s bedroom when the youngest pushed on the screen to the open window, said RCMP Sgt. Ravinder Pawar. The girl subsequently fell through the window, dropping about 20 feet to the asphalt driveway below.

An air ambulance touched down in Willowbrook Park on 197th Street in Langley Sunday afternoon between 2:20 and 3:15 p.m. An injured toddler was moved by ambulance to the awaiting helicopter that then transported her to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. The child was taken by BC Ambulance Service air ambulance, which landed in nearby Willowbrook Park. Mounties were on scene inves-
tigating for some time after, but the matter is not suspicious, explained Pawar, noting Victim Services has also been called in to help the family.
“Langley RCMP remind parents and care providers to be cognizant of children playing near and around open windows,” Pawar said.

Local MP dismisses contempt finding A federal committee chastises the Tories. by Brett Bonderud news@langleyadvance.com
The Conservative minority government has been found in contempt of Parliament by a House of Commons committee for failing to share information and spending estimates that MPs said they needed to do their jobs. “This is further evidence that the coalition is forcing an election,” Langley Conservative MP Mark Warawa said by phone from Ottawa. “They forced this into a committee.” The Standing Committee on Procedure and House affairs report released on March 21 said the Harper government did not have a “reasonable excuse” for not producing specific documents when ordered to do so by the Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) and the House of Commons. Contempt of Parliament is a rare occurance and can force a non-confidence vote that could result in a federal election. Typically contempt is ruled against MPs or bureaucrats. Conservative MPs downplayed the report in a dissenting response and said that “Opposition MP’s had pre-judged the outcome of the hearings before they had even begun.”
The multi-party committee made of six Conservatives, three Liberals, two Bloc Quebecois and one NDP MP met following the Speaker of the House Peter Milliken’s ruling earlier this month. He noted the “unsettling” lack of response by the government to FINA’s Mark Warawa and the House’s requests Langley MP for information. FINA requested cost estimates on the F-35 jets, the hosting of the G-8 and G-20 summits, and adjustments cost estimates to criminal code, justice and corrections bills as well as treasury costs from planned reduction of corporate tax rates. “It’s not about getting more information. It’s about raising an issue that’s not genuine,” Warawa said. The government repeatedly ignored requests from FINA citing “Cabinet confidence” privileges. “We’ve done everything we can to provide information. The costs for F-35’s – we provided it,” he said.
The FINA report noted the Speaker’s view that the documents provided by the government did not constitute all of the information ordered by the finance committee. The Speaker said that the government’s withholding of specific details was a serious matter that went to the heart of the House’s role in holding the government accountable. In the report House of Commons law clerk and Parliamentary counsel Robert Walsh argued that Parliament had the right to request the information but COMMENT government may decide to refuse. ONLINE That the Harper government refused the requests for information without reasonable excuse and failed to produce relevant documents were reasons cited for ruling in contempt of Parliament. The report concluded that the government’s failure to produce the documents impeded the House in the performance of its functions. But Warawa said the report was “a fabrication to cause an election.” “I see it as an abuse of Parliament,” he said. www.langleyadvance.com

An older house and a barn were lost to fire at two Langley Township properties Sunday evening. by Heather Colpitts hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com
The Traas home, where the family used to operate a rootstock nursery, was destroyed by fire Sunday evening. The home at 24120 48th Ave. was not occupied and was empty of contents at the time of the fire. The fire department got the call at about 8:45 p.m. Langley Township crews from Aldergrove, Willoughby, and Otter halls were on scene for about two hours with some staying overnight to secure the scene. “We had our investigators out there today,” said Township assistant fire chief Bruce Ferguson. This fire is considered suspicious and resulted in about $150,000 damage to an older home This was the second fire Sunday evening for Township crews. Members from halls in Aldergrove, Willoughby, Brookswood, and Murrayville spent more than three hours at the scene of a Brookswood barn fire. The call came in about 6:25 p.m. for a fire in the 3400 block of 205th Street. The barn was destroyed, as were shipping containers within the barn. The barn contained a grow up and the investigation has been “turned over to the RCMP,” Ferguson said.

Efforts to win $100,000 for LAPS in an online vote are showing some success.
Grand Opening March 26 & 27
by Matthew Claxton
mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
“We’re pretty excited,” Sean Baker of the Langley Animal Protection Society said Friday. On Thursday afternoon, LAPS took over first place in an ongoing online poll that could see the agency take home $100,000. LAPS has been in second place for several weeks in the Pepsi Refresh Project. It’s trying to win the cash for upgrades to the Patti Dale Animal Shelter in Aldergrove. By Friday morning, LAPS had slipped back into second place, then surged back to first after a few more votes were entered. “It’s obviously a pretty good race,” said Baker. This is a good sign for LAPS, which has no idea how many votes it’s actually received. Vote totals are not displayed, just the rankings for more than 90 projects vying for the top prize. Taking top spot seems to have been a good thing for
Open March 26 and 27 - 12-4 Staff at Patti Dale Animal Shelter, along with the animals, are hoping people will go online and vote for LAPS to win $100,000 from Pepsi. the shelter, Baker said. “Now that we’ve told people that we’re number one, people seem more keen to spread the word.” The shelter has been largely getting people to vote by word of mouth. Those coming into the shelter to get their dog licences renewed, for example, have been urged to vote. School children, seniors, and shelter volunteers have all vowed to vote and to spread the word to others. Voting can be done on a daily basis. Now that they know victory is possible, Baker said LAPS will keep working to get as many votes as possible between now and the end on April 30. “We’ve got some miles
to go here,” Baker said. “It’s a bit of a marathon, not a 100-metre sprint.” The $100,000 is intended for a specific project: a new pet training building. The building has been in the plans since the Patti Dale shelter was first built. But there hasn’t been enough money to see it through to construction. A $100,000 prize would do the job nicely, said Baker. To vote for the LAPS bid for $100,000, go to www. refresheverything.ca/helplapshelplangley. Once signed in, people can vote for the project every day. It’s competing against more than 90 other ideas from around Canada for various community projects.

Recipients moved to tears A family grappling with a loss was picked to receive the 2011 Extreme Home Repair.
Pastor Mike Dauncey (bottom left) shared the news Thursday that the Grochowski family will receive an Extreme Home Repair in May.
by Roxanne Hooper
rhooper@langleyadvance.com
The death of David Grochowski three years ago sent his parents and siblings into a tail spin they’ve still not fully recovered from. But the Acts of Kindness (AOK) team from the Aldergrove SeventhDay Adventist Church hope last week’s announcement will turn that all around for the family. During a visit to the Grochowski’s Aldergrove home late Thursday, Pastor Mike Dauncey and some of the AOK team told the teary-eyed family members they’d been selected as recipients of the 2011 Extreme Home Repair. “They’ve had a huge loss, and maybe this is something that can give them a shot in the arm and lift them up,” Dauncey told the Langley Advance, extending a plea to anyone interested in helping. They were told that on May 13, hundreds of volunteers will converge on their 267A Street home, and spend the next 10 days repairing and upgrading the dilapidated 1970s twostorey structure. “They’re a wonderful family whose lives were torn apart with the death
of their son David,” said long-time project member Lorne Brownmiller, who explained that 18-year-old David was killed in a car accident in October 2007. The loss devastated his father Walt, mother Terry, and his five siblings – four of whom still live at home. And even though they were in the midst of home renovations at the time of David’s death, little has been done on that project or many others since. “Honestly, they’re home is in disrepair… It needs some help,” Brownmiller said, elaborating that the kitchen, bath, floors, deck, windows, insulation, roofing, heating system, landscape, and other aspects of the home are all under consideration in what will be one of the most intense projects in the AOK home
repair’s seven-year history. The Grochowski family was one of seven nominated, six from Aldergrove and one from Idaho (out of the AOK area). The project runs May 13-23. The family is vacated from the home for the duration, and volunteers conclude with a ceremonial reveal the last day. “We really feel we can help them get a leg up,” said Dauncey. The AOK is holding a volunteer job fair for the makeover on Saturday, April 16, 1 p.m. at the Adventist church (26245 28th Ave.) In the meantime, anyone interested in donating products, services, or time to the project can also email: pastordauncey@gmail.com, or call the church at 604-856-5830, ext. 104.

Nuclear future still unclear Whatever the eventual outcome of the crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant, the events that continue to unfold there will have important repercussions around the world. There is little doubt it will reignite the debate here in Canada over the use of nuclear power as a viable and supposedly “clean” energy source. While the discussion is necessary, it’s vital that it be cool-headed. The images coming out of Japan of exploding containment structures, fleeing workers, and clouds of radioactive steam appear to put the lie to claims we have heard for years from proponents that nuclear power is safe. Dozens of people have been contaminated to varying degrees, and if the worst-casescenario – a full meltdown – plays out, the toll will be far higher. Already the European Union is reviewing its energy policy in response, and it’s not unlikely Canada will follow suit. To see a plant that Japan deemed to be safe fail in the face of an expected natural disaster is certainly alarming, but before we let that fear drive us away from nuclear technology, we have to consider the alternatives. In much of Canada and in many parts of the world, the most viable forms of nonnuclear energy production involve the burning of fossil fuels. The gases released by those processes are changing our planet’s climate, pushing us toward a catastrophe on a scale that dwarfs anything that could result from a meltdown in Japan. As horrific as the unfolding disaster in Japan may be, there are lessons to be learned and value to be had in the learning. Reviewing our nuclear policy and revisiting the safety and placement of our plants is sensible, but turning our backs on the technology, without careful consideration, could prove to be disastrously foolish.

Family values
Canada needs more babies
us to look at how we view the Canadian family. Do we value life from conception to natural death? Do we want our children to grow up in a sustainable environment where they experience life with a mom, a dad, and brothers and sisters, too? Have we pondered the gift of childbirth? Thousands of women endure the pain of infertility all around us, while many Canadians view children as an inconvenience, at best. I think there are a lot of reasons to consider our family values today. Andrew Van Andel, Langley

Poor arguments favour religion
Dear Editor, If David Standecumbe was trying to argue that religion is more than baseless belief, or compatible with science, he did a very poor job of it. In a debate with a creationist, noted skeptic Michael Shermer showed his opponent a specific evolutionary step, or as those ignorant of science call it, a “missing link” or “gap” fossil. His rather unevolved adversary’s eyes brightened
and he shouted, “Aha! Now you have two more gaps to fill!” It is difficult to take such ignorance seriously or treat it with respect. As to my evidence, I suggest looking into any aspect of the fossil record, the layering of fossils in the strata that show evolution all the way up to primates, or speaking to any competent scientist of any sort. We even have one of the won-
RV bylaw
A and B stuck on petty issue
Dear Editor, It seems that the RV parking issue will not easily be resolved. “A” wants to park his RV where it is convenient, and “B” doesn’t want to have to look at it. ln passing a bylaw concerning the issue, who has the right to determine that the rights of “A” or “B” are greater than the other? The last time I looked, Canada was considered a democracy, and I cannot understand how such an insignificant issue can cause so much turmoil. It’s so petty! Try showing a little consideration for a neighbour whose opinion or tastes are not wrong, just different from your own. The next thing we know, there will be bylaws not allowing one to plant flowers his neighbour might not like. Elaine Jensen, Fort Langley
RV bylaw
Meddling council hikes taxes
Dear Editor, I quite agree with Mr. Nickason [Owners have right to own property, March 15 Letters, Langley Advance]. We seem to be paying Township councillors to meddle in our lives. They have a bylaw telling us where to park our vehicles. They approve spending tens of thousands of dollars to protect adults from cars (it isn’t children driving to the hospital and crossing the road), but if a school community requests traffic-calming measures to protect children who are forced to cross busy roads, then it requires years of consultation and budget consultations before anything can be done. Any wonder our taxes are going up? Barbara Chu, Langley
Amalgamation
Useless twits unsupportable
Dear Editor, The more the politicos and the unions object to amalgamation, the more likely it would be to our advantage to amalgamate. Just think: we could get rid of almost 50 per cent of the useless twits we now support in one fell swoop. We might even get a municipal council that works, and we would not need traffic control people to protect the huge numbers of municipal workers standing around watching one man work at a work site. ders of evolution in our own back yard, as early fossils were discovered in the burgess shale in Yoho National park in this very province. I might recommend Steven Jay Gould’s Wonderful Life, which describes how close all life came to being extinct on this planet. If there is a loving creator, why did he kill 99.99 per cent of all species that have ever lived, set us next to a sun that is due to destroy this planet in the future, and make our climate such that the burning of fuel could kill us off? Why did he design us with an eye that has a larygneal nerve and a blind spot that makes life overly difficult for us but makes perfect sense if it evolved from prior eyes? Why did he create the octopus with better eyes, free of a blind spot, in the exact way that one would expect if they evolved from a different branch of our common primitive ancestor? I find the morality point fascinating. It seems to me that Mr. Standecumbe is arguing that, if someone could positively prove there was no god, he would quit his job and run around raping people and cutting his neighbours’ heads off and taking copious amounts of heroin. I highly doubt this to be the case. We know that human beings have an innate moral sense, and learn more about this every day through the study of evolutionary biology, as well as with the development of neuroimaging technology. We even know what part of the brain malfunctions to create psychopathic behavior, and what genes are correlated with psychopathy. While we do have innate, evolved moral intuitions, moral truth is a debate to be had. There is no caretaker looking out for us, so making the world a better and freer place is our shared and constant struggle. You can’t blame it on dad, it’s our responsibility. Dear Editor, The fertility rate necessary for stable population growth in Canada is 2.1 – that’s an average of two to three children per able female. We’re currently experiencing a fertility rate of 1.9 in our nation. Why does it matter? In 20 years, there will be a rather large proportion of our population heading into retirement age, and an increasingly smaller group of taxpayers to support our hefty health care system. The math just doesn’t add up. Beyond the numbers, maybe it’s time for

New golf course could come to South Langley by Matthew Claxton
mclaxton@langleyadvance.com
The first new golf course to be planned for Langley in years cleared its major hurdle last week, with few issues raised at a public hearing. Emerald Springs Golf Course is planned for a plot of land south of 8th Avenue and west of 272nd Street in South Aldergrove. Only one nearby resident raised any issues with the plan. “We do support the golf course,” said Dan Smith, a resident of the nearby Pioneer Park mobile home complex. He noted 30 to 60 of the park’s residents are members of a golf club, and can stay closer to home when Emerald Springs is built.
“Our concern is traffic,” he said. The course, if given final approval, He pointed to an S-bend where will cover 45 hectares (112 acres), 272nd Street makes its way up a with its main access off 8th Avenue. steep hill, and also worried The course itself will about an increase in traffic on include 18 holes – with four Zero Avenue. par five holes, eight par A large number of family fours, and six par threes. members and friends of the Holes will range from 517 landowners were in the counyards to 142 yards. cil chambers to show support The greens won’t be for the project. watered from well water. Local mom Cheryl Hee found being able to get together with other parents of children with Down Syndrome a great help. But the nearest meetings were in White Rock or Abbotsford, and she just couldn’t fit in support group meetings in addition to caring for her son, Maxx. “Being a new mom I was completely exhausted and never managed to attend any of the parent networking evenings,” Hee said. Walnut Grove Gators 6’4” forward Braeden Donnelly looked for a way to move the ball into the paint on Saturday, the final day of the 66th annual B.C. boys Triple A basketball championships at the Langley Events Centre. It was tough sledding, especially in the face of Sir Charles Tupper Tigers’ two tallest players, 6’4” forward Warren Liang and 7’ centre Cameron Smythe. In the game deciding sixth and eighth in the province, the Tigers defeated the Gators 68-60.
Langley Seahawks goaltender Trevor Agnew raised his stick and glove in celebration following his team’s initiation H2 (six and seven-year-olds) game against the New Westminster Royals Saturday at the Langley Sportsplex. The game was part of the Jordan Owens Memorial Spring Initiation Tournament, which wraps up today.

Having fun is the first goal of an initiation hockey tournament held annually to honour a young boy who loved Canada’s winter pastime. The Jordan Owens Memorial Spring Initiation Tournament – which started Friday and ends today – drew approximately 40 teams and more than 500
Langley’s Oliver Parlee watched the play unfold on the ice. five- to eight-year-old boys and girls players to the Langley Sportsplex. The tournament is held in memory of avid hockey player Jordan Owens, who, on July 8, 1999, died at the age of eight after a long battle with cancer.
The two main goals of this tournament are for all involved to enjoy themselves, and to raise money for BC Children’s Hospital. Last year’s tournament generated more than $15,000 for the charity cause.

With the reality of having just played their final game of the season – and for a few of them, their high school careers – still sinking in, the Walnut Grove Gators turned to their fans and applauded Saturday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre.
Gator Nation, wearing green T-shirts, and similar-coloured face and body paint, some armed with signs, drums, and drumsticks, reciprocated the love. The lone Langley team involved in the B.C. boys Triple A basketball championships, the Gators lost 68-60 to the Sir Charles Tupper Tigers in the contest deciding sixth and eighth in B.C. The Walnut Grove boys trailed 60-55 with a minute to go in the game. Sir Charles Tupper out-scored Walnut Grove 8-5 as time ticked down.

Gators head coach George Bergen, still a little hot over the officiating during a tense final minute of the game, reflected on his team’s overall performance over the course of the tournament, which ran March 15-19 at the LEC. “We never stopped working and that shows a quality of character,” he said. The Gators were led against the Tigers by Grade 10 forward and tournament honourable mention all-star Paul Getz, who poured in 19 points while collecting a gamehigh 20 rebounds. Guard Jack Tsai tallied 17 points, while one of the Gators’ key offensive threats, forward Larry Blyth, hobbled by a lower body injury, was limited to five points while hauling down 11 rebounds. Ranked ninth in B.C., the Gators had a tough opening draw Wednesday afternoon. The No. 4ranked Vancouver College Fighting Irish simply wore down Walnut Grove in a 76-62 victory. The Gators led 20-15 after the first quarter and 34-29 at halftime. The Fighting Irish owned the second half, out-scoring Gators 19-9 in the third quarter and 28-19 during

the final stanza. Blyth led the Gators with 23 points and 17 rebounds. Getz and Tsai (10 points each) also reached double figures in scoring in a losing cause. The loss put the Gators out of the running for medal contention. “That first loss – it was not easy to take a dagger in that first game,” Bergen said. “But I thought we rebounded well, and I am very proud on that front.” The Gators rebounded to win their next two contests, 69-44 over the Gleneagle Talons Thursday and 90-77 over the Oak Bay Bays Friday.
Tsai (27 points, including going six-for-nine from three-points range) and Derek Muxworthy (25 points, including four three-pointers) exploded offensively against the Bays. Sean Monsanto with 15 points and Getz with 13 points also had big outings offensively. On St. Patrick’s Day, the Gators didn’t need the luck of the Irish to take care of the Talons. Blyth and Getz with 17 points each and Muxworthy with 14 points provided all the offence necessary for Walnut Grove, which outscored Gleneagle 23-4 in the opening quarter and led 42-13 at halftime.

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!
Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
