FSA test rhetoric gears up

Principals and vice-principals want FSA replaced without political baggage. by Maria Rantanen

Bursary book causes friction Trustee Dave Rempel wanted a fund to honour a former secretary-treasurer who was well respected in the district. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

A bursary, bearing the name of a former school distirct secretary-treasurer doesn’t make the grade. The bursary, fundraised to honour one of the founding members of the Ridge Meadows Education Foundation, will not be included in the district’s bursary book due out soon. Only reason given: It’s a directive from senior district staff. When secretary-treasurer Don Woytowich left the district because of health reasons a year and a half ago, a few community members wanted to recognize his work for local education by raising $1,200 for a bursary in his name.

School board trustee Dave Rempel said brought up in a closed school board meethe was the one who suggested the buring, the reasons for exclusion can’t be sary be set up. It’s that time of year when students in Grades 4 and 7 start writing the foundation skills assessment, and when the political rhetoric starts flying. Every year, the principals and teachers get caught up in the controversy which damages relationships, said local school board chair Ken Clarkson. And this is largely because the data is used by the right-wing Fraser Institute to rank schools throughout the Ken Clarkson province. School board chair “The Fraser Institute misuses (the FSA data),” Clarkson said. “They’re not statistically valid in the way they’re using them.” The BC Principals’ and VicePrincipals’ Association released a statement Wednesday saying the FSA should be replaced with another “standardized measure” that doesn’t have “political baggage and rhetoric” around it. They say the misuse of data by the Fraser Institute, low participation rate, and lack of effort from students taking the test make it “flawed.” The annual kerfuffle over FSA works well politically for both the teachers’ union and the Liberal government, according to Clarkson. He said union and school district have come up with a compromise: teachers can send home material about the test but can’t talk to students about it, and administrators won’t challenge parents who withdraw their students.

Braving the icy rough seas of Britain’s coastline, Chris Cooper is no stranger to adventure, and he is preparing to set sail once again in his 42-foot Canadian-built canoe this July for a month-long tour around the Shetland Islands. Cooper and his team of canoeists have been slowly making their way around the British Isles, one community and trip at a time, for the past two years. They left from London in May 2008 and explored Orkney last year. A journey that was previously estimated to take three years has now been expanded to at least eight. Cooper, a long-time resident of Maple Ridge and now Pitt Meadows, has been in the adventure business for about 30 years, but the Spirit Dancer canoe journey is a labour of love. “It’s a very exciting journey we’re on,” said Cooper, “and we eventually want to work our way around the British Isles.” He said that the only thing they ask from the host communities is a roof over the heads of the crew, and a chance to get to Chris Cooper know the locals. In exchange, Cooper and his team take out everyone in the canoe, teach them about it, and show them their land from a different perspective. “Over 1,200 at least British people have paddled with me in the canoe,” said Cooper, “including the Royal Marines.” He said that when they arrive in the different communities, everyone is just so surprised and delighted to see such a sight. “The canoe was built back in 2004 to paddle the Alaska coast,” he said, but then in 2005 he decided to see if he could transport the canoe

to the U.K., from where he hails, and he has not looked back since. Spirit Dancer weighs almost 2,000 pounds, is 42-feet long, six-feet wide, and seats 19 people, so transporting it anywhere is no small feat. Cooper and his crew have seen some amazing sights and experienced many adventures in the vessel, but he said his favourite part about the journey is meeting the locals and sharing his experience with them. “Our hope this year with the community of Westray,” he said, “is to try and get youth from Westray [an Orkney Island] to Canada to be hosted by the Native communities. And then some from here can go there.” Cooper has already been instrumental in arranging some trips for youth from both countries, and he said cross-cultural learning is very important to him.

Now in 2011, Cooper will be gathering his team for July, raising some more funds, and asking the people of Shetland to help organize his schedule so that he can coincide with the Tall Ship event from July 21 to 24. “It’s a huge, huge amount of work,” he said, “but I really love [the] long trips.” He will even be paddling through Washington State before taking off to Shetland this summer. For a journey that started out without an itinerary and an agenda, Cooper has built up a fan base that extends around the world, something that seemed out of reach when he started. “I like to tell people it’s on the brink of insanity really,” he laughed. middle of the barns,” said Lehna, “that means all the buildings have to be dug out and hauled away, then soil hauled back in, it’s just ridiculous.” He said it was not feasible because it would be very expensive. At Pitt Meadows council meeting on Tuesday night, council decided to forward this application for a home site severance to the ALC, and all but councillor

John Becker were in favour. Director of operations and development services, Kim Grout, said that staff’s option to divide up 13511 Neaves Road by removing the vacant dairy barns and silo and reclaiming the land for agricultural production, was in their opinion a “significant enough benefit for the ALC to consider this application.”

Students warm homeless Scarves and warm clothing were donated to Caring Place Ministries, thanks to the efforts of local kids. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

The older students at Edith McDermott Elementary replaced their iPods, iPhones, and cellphones with sewing needles through November and December, in their efforts to warm the community’s needy. A scarf-knitting project involving Grade 6s and 7s culminated with an assembly Tuesday morning in the Pitt Meadows school gym, where Salvation Army Maj. Ed Chiu and retired Capt. Anne Silvester from the Caring Place Ministries were presented with piles of the woolly creations to donate to local homeless. A couple of students knitted hats, as well, and the Edith McDermott parent community added knitted scarves and toques to the collection. In total, roughly 80 scarves and six hats were donated. “It keeps the homeless people warm in the winter when they don’t have any shelter,” remarked Grade 6 Tori Peterson, who said it took her about “two or three weeks” to knit her scarf. Grade 6 Connor Evers said the project shows those who don’t have a permanent roof over their heads that Edith

McDermott students care about them. “We [the students] were really enthusiastic,” he said. “Everybody was really excited about doing it.” Students took to the project with such zeal, they took Grade 6 teachers Julia Massey and Tracey Meaden by surprise. Daily, the teachers had students asking if they could knit. Some even rushed through schoolwork so they could focus their efforts on their knitting. “Sometimes you have to worry about students trying to text at their desks, Meaden related, “yet we had them knitting and would need to ask them to put the needles away!” Meaden said students benefited on two levels: they took up a practical hobby that is – and was – likely all the rage of most of their great grandparents, and they now have a greater awareness of the homeless situation in their community. “They were learning about homelessness, a problem that’s widespread that affects everybody, and this is how they can help,” she said. What began last year with a group of Grade 6ers knitting for the homeless spread to four classes and will likely evolve into a school knitting club. The knitting project was initiated last year in Massey and Meaden’s class and roughly 60 scarves were donated. This year’s crop of Grade 7 students took a leadership role and taught the Grade 6s how to knit. • More online at www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Celebration

Embracing change and turning 90 Juanita Savege has seen this community transform from farming town to bustling city. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

The secret to a long life is eating breakfast at places like McDonald’s or A&W most mornings. Well, it is in Juanita Savege’s case, anyway. The current Maple Ridge resident, who moved to Pitt Meadows from Alberta when she was just 14, is celebrating her 90th birthday this month, and is quite partial to the Egg McMuffins at McDonald’s. Many residents in the community will know Savege, as she taught elementary school for about 20 years, before becoming a real estate agent in 1969 for the next 24 years. She graduated from Maple Ridge Secondary and then taught at Hammond, Pitt Meadows, and Maple Ridge Elementaries. “I attended normal school to train to be a teacher,” she said. “That’s what teaching school was called then, normal school, I have no idea why,” she laughed. Savege remembers the Fraser Valley flood of 1948, when thousands of people were displaced, and people came from all over to volunteer laying sandbags. “My contribution when I came home from school was peeling a tub of potatoes for the soldiers and volunteers,” she recounted. She had four children, two sons and two daughters (one of whom is Hometown Hero Jill Savege), and was married to her husband Henry for almost 40 years. She now has four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and another on the way. Her husband was the Pitt Meadows fire chief in the 1950s, and Savege remembers some of the tragedies of that time, including the Sluis family home burning

She and Henry were married on her family’s Pitt Meadows farm, but Savege only had one guest. “My friend from high school stood up for me,” she said. “I couldn’t look forward to a big wedding, I was really quite shy.” Henry passed away 30 years ago. “I went through a terrible sad time,” she said, but credits her real

estate job for getting her through the pain. “It was such a small group,” Savege said, as she was only one of three women realtors at the time. “We had such fun.” She has no intention of slowing down as she wants to go back to school and learn a new language, but doesn’t like to go out in the evenings when most of the classes are held. “I’m old,” she chuckled. She is completely independent and self-sufficient, and has embraced all forms of technology, even talking to her grandson on Skype rather than the telephone, and keeping up-to-date with friends via email. “I’m doing very well,” she said. “So far, I think I’ve got all my marbles, although my memory is a bit iffy.” She warned, however, that getting old is not for wimps. “There’s a lot of pain,” Savege said. “You can’t be a sissy growing old, you’ve got to be tough.” Keeping to a schedule seems to be one of the keys to Savege’s success. Every morning she is up at 6 a.m. and gets dressed and puts her make-up on as if she is going to work. “If anyone walked in here [her apartment] at 7 a.m., I’d be ready.” No doubt she will be dressed in her finest on Sunday, Jan. 30, when local realtors the Teleps, throw her birthday party at the Ridge Meadows Seniors Activity Centre (12150 224th St.), 1-4 p.m. It’s an an open house, and Savege asks for no gifts. “I’m a hoarder,” she chuckled.

Our View

Encountering environment

Creative

The recent cougar sighting at 256th Street and 128th Avenue is a reminder of how close we live to what some folks like to call “the environment.” In fact, the wilderness is just outside our door – practically anywhere in Canada, but certainly it’s within walking distance for just about anyone in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows. That wilderness – with all its wonders and beauty – is one of the things that makes this such a great place to live, work, and play. But that cougar sighting… It’s a reminder that the wilderness that bounds us almost on all sides presents us not only beauty and adventure, but also with danger and responsibility. The danger comes from inappropriate contact with local wildlife – which includes not only that cougar and its ilk, but the more common black bears, as well as smaller critters that can prove nearly as ferocious if cornered or encountered unexpectedly. It’s our responsibility, as usurpers of what had been their domain until we built our houses and businesses here, and as stewards of the environment we need preserve for our own sakes, to ensure that all of our encounters and all of our dealings with wildlife are appropriate, both for our safety and for the safety of those who call the nearby wilderness their home. If you happen across a wild animal, whether on a hiking trail (which should be unlikely, since you’ll be carrying your bell or other noisemaker to discourage their approach… right?) or in your backyard, keep your distance. But don’t panic. For the most part, the bears and cougars and other wild creatures that share our territory don’t want a close encounter with us any more than we do with them. But if you run or behave erratically, an animal’s instinct may classify you as prey – not a designation to be desired. Stay calm, but make yourself big and imposing – and back away without fear. If you appear to be in control of the situation, a cougar or bear (or any other predator you’re likely to encounter hereabouts) generally will prefer not to tangle with you. As in human encounters, simple respect tends to work best. – B.G.

Development

Downtown gets boost Dear editor,

These are exciting times for Maple Ridge. Two stories in the Jan. 18 issue of The TIMES, illustrate the positive potential for progressive redevelopment of the downtown core of Maple Ridge. Stories featuring the proposal for a new hotel, and another for the redevelopment of a “rough” area of downtown, highlight the growing interest in investing in downtown Maple Ridge. All the more positive, is that in both cases, these entrepreneurs have roots in this area. The time is now to catch the spirit of progressive redevelopment for downtown Maple Ridge. With our phenomenal natural setting, our strategic location in the centre of the Lower Mainland, and our excellent transportation corridors, what’s not to like about continuing in the redevelopment of Maple Ridge as a modern business and commercial, as well as residential centre?

Being born and raised in the Lower Mainland, and working in the international hospitality industry since 1986, I am excited that Maple Ridge is ready to capitalize on its aforementioned attributes, to attract better jobs and superior amenities, creating a more desirable place to live.

Wishing Haungs the best Dear editor,

It was nice to read about some positive plans for new development in Maple Ridge. I wish the Huang family the best of luck in getting this project off the ground and hope that some of the slower moving relics in council will allow for the steps required to make this happen. It seems past and present councils like nothing more than to pontificate and plan ’til the cows come home and in the end get next to nothing done.

C. Schindelhauer, Maple Ridge

Most birds welcome I was pleased to read Michael Cunningham’s letter to the editor on how necessary bird feeders are to our birds [More feeders critical to birds, Jan. 18 Letters, The TIMES]. We always feed our birds year round, and two years ago even bought a birdbath heater so they continue to drink and flip about in the water if they need... when all other sources are frozen or filthy. We have four seed sources and six suet cages around our property. We enjoy watching numerous varieties of our feathered friends take turns as they do to feed. We buy quality seed and store it in a freezer until we need to refill feeders. We also buy the unsalted peanuts for our flock or band of stellar jays. I hide the nuts around our patio, and when checking hiding spots the next morning am amazed that those stellars have found all the peanuts. Gray squirrel when she hears I’m out the patio door comes running for her peanuts also that I put in an undercover cage also hidden on our patio. We have been entertained by these creatures for probably 30 years or more, but now retired, notice all the activity moreso. It is a joy.

Things changed about four or five years ago. Now we have up to 12 or 15 pigeons that think this is their health spa and gourmet restaurant – I’m sure. They sit on our patio cover, as well as in the seed stations, pooping. We feel like we are feeding an army. These pigeons stay and stay and stay, hogging all the feeding areas from our usual birds. One could shoo them away only to find them returned with friends. This has created lots of extra cleaning for us to keep things somewhat sanitary. We usually keep the feeders disinfected to prevent any illness to the birds. People who visit just say to shoot them. I don’t have a gun, and find that extreme. I really couldn’t, and besides, it’s probably against the law. You tell me please what we can do about this problem without hurting or discriminating against these big hungry pigeons.

Home builders, sellers optimistic about 2011 The community saw modest increases in housing values over the past year. by Teija Beck

editorial@mrtimes.com

The past year has been a good one for home buyers, builders, and sellers alike in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. “2009 was a very bad year for housing sales, because of the global economic downturn,” said Peter Simpson, president and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association. “But in 2010, we saw a resurgence in consumer confidence, which translated into higher housing starts.” There were many more jobs created in the construction industry last year in the region, Simpson noted, pointing to stats

Grief has no timeline

that say between January and November, construction began on 404 houses in Maple Ridge. That’s a 29 per cent hike over 2009. However, in Pitt Meadows, there were fewer starts. “In Pitt Meadows, activity there isn’t strong at the best of times,” Simpson said. For instance, in 2009 there were 34 housing starts, compared to 14 in 2010. Simpson predicted home renovations would be a growth area in Pitt Meadows in the future, as houses age and require upgrading. While there wasn’t much new construction in Pitt Meadows, the City did see an increase in housing prices. According to Jas Sandher, a realtor with Royal LePage, housing prices increased by about six per cent in Pitt Meadows and about three per cent in Maple Ridge. “Generally [prices] have been stable,”

Troy Landreville,/TIMES

Construction was underway on a single-family home in Maple Ridge in November.

Sandher said. “There’s been a slight increase, maybe one per cent increase over the Lower Mainland. But in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in particular there have been increases in housing prices.” For developer Rob Grimm, principal

with Portrait Homes, 2010 has overall been a good year for building in Ridge. “For smaller single family homes, the market has been very strong throughout the whole year,” Grimm said. “I would say the first half of the year was a recovery year. I think things have slowed slightly in the second half of the year.” Grimm partially credits this slight slowdown in the second half of 2010 to the introduction of the HST in July. “Larger single-family homes, where they are above the HST threshold, were very active at the start of the year, with people trying to beat the HST, but that end of the market has slowed slightly in the second half of the year,” Grimm said. “It’s due to the political instability right now,” he continued. “The HST forms part of it. People are kind of saying, let’s wait and see.”

The plastic surface can also be subjected to sanitizing cleansers, like bleach, without damaging the board itself. However, recent studies have revealed that over time bacteria can build up in the scores from knives on the surface, that even sanitizing will not remove completely. When deep scores have been made in a cutting board, it is recommended to reface the board. Plastic boards are very difficult to resurface, and it is much easier to purchase a new one. Many people think wooden cutting board surfaces hold bacteria, and many households have switched to plastic for this very reason. But wood offers natural anti-septic qualities. The

wood also can naturally reseal small scores from cutting. A food grade mineral oil should be used on a regular basis to help stop the wood from drying out and cracking. I prefer to use plastic cutting boards for meat or seafood. This way I can sanitize them in the dishwasher, until they get well used that is. Wooden cutting boards offer a cutting surface for all other applications such as fruits, vegetables, etc. I do not own a glass cutting board. The most unique cutting surface I have ever used is a phone book. I was invited to a “guy’s night” poker party at a bachelor’s apartment and it turned into an impromptu cooking demonstration. His kitchen was not well equipped, so we sanitized the outside of his Yellow Pages and used it as a cutting board! While this might be an amusing story, I strongly advise against this practice.

PRESENTERS

Almost every household has some type of cutting board to offer a place for chopping or slicing in order to protect their kitchen counter tops. With so many to choose from, hopefully I can help shed some light on this subject by discussing the pros and cons of the three main types of cutting boards available: glass, plastic, and wood. One of my biggest pet peeves is a glass cutting board, and I take every opportunity to advise anyone I can of the reasons. Tempered-glass cutting boards are made to offer a surface that is easily sanitized by hand or by putting them in the dishwasher, and offer a surface that will never deteriorate. However, because this cutting surface is so hard, it will dull even the highest quality kitchen knife faster than any other cutting board. They usually depict an attractive photo or print under the surface of the glass which makes them desirable to have out and ready to use, but I would highly recommend using them only as a serving platter and nothing else. Plastic cutting boards on the other hand offer a soft-

Insight

Witnesses realize memories can lie

We had been walking home after enjoying a play at the theatre and had stopped to rest awhile in the fragrantly scented garden for the blind, when we saw and heard the crash. Alan It sounded like two boxes Woodland meeting, as the car hit a big plane tree, quivered for a Here and There moment and then leapt backwards to end up facing in the opposite direction from which it had come quickly out of the long, curving tree-lined road. It was small and black like my friend Jimmy’s car. I ran some distance to the nearest house, stayed long enough to be sure they had a phone and that they would use it, and then came back to the side of the road and the tree and what was waiting there. I am not going to describe what that was. That is not the purpose of today’s article. What I want to do is to write about ordinary people in less than ordinary situations; how where you are, and what you are doing and thinking, may suddenly be changed. On this particular fine late summer evening we had been walking slowly. We were friends, students at a local college of art and literature. The play we had enjoyed was a complex one that left us with much to discuss. We had already agreed that if we went back to see it again we would probably have more unanswered questions than we had right now. As we walked beneath the trees that met high above our heads, enjoying the floodlit banks of flowers that lined the footpaths on either side, we were not surprised to find that our views of the meaning of the play were often quite different. At the accident scene, when the police arrived and asked us if we had seen what had happened, we said yes, and that we would wait to tell what we had seen and that we would be in the garden. As we waited, partly to get over the shock of what had happened so suddenly out of a quiet late summer evening, and the sad confusion inside the car, we talked of what we had witnessed and how we had done so and, even as we were talking, so short a time after the event, we began to wonder whether what each of us thought had happened had really happened. Who saw it first? Did we see it first or did we hear it? We had been discussing the play, our eyes and minds elsewhere. Did we only look towards the road when we heard what I thought was a sound like boxes coming together? What about the car quivering and then leaping backwards away from the tree some moments after the collision — did we really see that? Each of us? And then we realized the similarities between our reaction to the play and this real-life event. Just as we had difficulty knowing what had happened on the stage, we were also having difficulty now. It was bewildering. There we sat in the lamp-lit night, conscious of the heady fragrance of the flowers around us, aware of the activity on the road a mere 100 feet away as the lights flashed and the official helpers did their careful work, and neither of us was sure that what we thought we had seen and heard less than half an hour ago really happened the way we thought it had. We were not sure. And we were the only witnesses.

Dear SwarmJam I wanted to instantly express my thanks for your advice. I thought I knew a lot about advertising, as I own Imageworks, a Graphic Design and Web Design Studio. I am often correct in my assessments... but you proved that I still have more to learn! I signed up Magic Clean, a pressure washing and window cleaning provider, for SwarmJam; I thought the ad should run in late March or April. You assured me it would work now in early January... even though it’s cold and quite miserable outside! I was hesitant about running it now but you assured me it would WORK and BOY, oh BOY you were right!

THE AD APPEARED TODAY!

• By 7 a.m. we had 3 people buy. Who gets up that early to buy? • At 11 a.m. we had 12 new clients • At 6 p.m. we had 24 buyers • WHOOPS... another just signed up as I am typing! That’s 25 and growing • WHOOPS... 3 more signed up.That’s 28 now! WE HAVE 4 days to to go!!!!

MY PERSONAL ADVICE TO ADVERTISERS • Get in on the SwarmJam bandwagon today, before your competitors do. • Think carefully about your costs, because if done right it will far exceed your expectations. • Try to make it a value that is great for buyers, while still affordable to you!

Warmly from, Brian Budd and the MagicClean Team

WANT TO RECYCLE YOUR UNWANTED ELECTRONICS? Here’s where you can recycle them safely and free of charge in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge:

Pitt Meadows Bottle & Return-It Depot 19090 Lougheed Highway, Pitt Meadows (604) 465-2866

Ridge Meadows Recycling 10092 – 236th Street, Maple Ridge (604) 463-5545

WHAT IS THE ELECTRONICS STEWARDSHIP ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (ESABC) PROGRAM? ESABC is a not-for-profit extended producer responsibility program set up by the producers and retailers of electronics in British Columbia to provide a province wide recycling system for unwanted electronics.

ISN’T IT IMPORTANT TO REUSE BEFORE RECYCLING? While the program is designed to manage unwanted electronic products that have exhausted their reuse potential, we strongly encourage users to first reuse their products. If you choose to donate to a charity, make sure you have backed up your data and wiped your drives clean prior to donation.

WHAT ARE THE ACCEPTABLE ELECTRONIC ITEMS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM? Effective July 1, 2010, the following items can be recycled free of charge at any Encorp Return-It Electronics™ Collection Site: display devices, desktop computers, portable computers, computer peripherals, computer scanners, printers and fax machines, non-cellular phones and answering machines, vehicle audio and video systems (aftermarket), home audio and video systems, and personal or portable audio and video systems.

HOW ARE ELECTRONICS RECYCLED? Electronics collected for recycling are sent to approved primary recyclers in North America. They are broken down using various manual and mechanical processes. Products are separated into their individual components for recovery. Through a variety of refining and smelting processes, the materials reclaimed from unwanted electronics are used as raw materials in the manufacturing of new products.

Grand opening

New core building for credit union

by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

After months of construction and anticipation, the doors of the new Westminster Savings branch opened this week. This new location, which is the largest branch with the most members, offers more space, 20 new private offices and an enviable downtown location. “Westminster Savings has been operating in

Maple Ridge for many years and we now have over 10,000 local community members,” said Barry Forbes, Westminster Savings’ president and chief executive officer. “We are excited to be a

part of the great transformation that is taking place in the downtown core.” The previous building was about 40 years old, and senior branch manager Paul Pederzini told the TIMES last month that the

Barracudas meet Blues

The Meadowridge Barracudas female midget 1 hockey team got a special treat when they played in California. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

When some members of the St. Louis Blues hockey team came to watch the Meadowridge Barracudas play part of their game, manager Annette Fox said the girls were very intimidated. The female midget 1 hockey team were playing in the Blues’ practice arena as part of a tournament, and Fox said that when one of the Barracudas got hurt, the

St. Louis Blues’ trainer offered his assistance, and the young team were able to pose for pictures in the NHL’s dressing room. They even attracted the attention of Blues player T.J. Oshie, who Fox said was kind enough to change out of his practice jersey into his team jersey and pose for pictures with the girls. He even gave them a motivational speech so they could take his message to the ice. The Barracudas played against teams from Guelph, Ont., Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, and made it as far as the semifinals before they were knocked out.

PITT MEADOWS GUIDELINES POLICY F09(1990) Calls for the flooding of the drainage system in the wet months of March and October and it is also done in November. The float switch settings at the pump stations are too high so that the pumps cycle 3 feet above some lands drainage systems. The drain pipes of these rural lands are submerged by the City in October and remain that way. The property owners pay for drainage with a drainage utility and receive flooding in return. 21 years is too long. People need to demand an end to this damage to get it to stop.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Secrets, depths, sexual urges, subconscious nudges, large finances, net worth, other people’s money and resources – these fill the weeks ahead. Research, look beneath surface appearances. Love vows or business agreements are one thing; commitment to share, delivering the funds, is another. Now it’s commitment time. You either get deeper, or break off. Tackle errands Sunday morning. Home, kids and security, nature and nutrition capture your attention this eve to Tuesday. Romance has a bit of a rough ride mid-week. Still, joy exists! Tackle chores Friday/Saturday – you succeed! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis lies on relationships, relocation, contracts, negotiations, opportunities and opposition. Emotions intensify; there’s little middle ground. Love and hate swirl. Your romantic sensors are fine-tuned, and luck flows into all communications. In short, you might fall in love now or soon, or heal a valuable, longterm bond. This week isn’t the easiest, or the hardest. Communications, travel succeed Sunday p.m. to Tuesday. Recuperate, rest mid-week. Various frictions arise, perhaps with a partner. Be diplomatic. Romance, creativity, luck soar Thursday night to Saturday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A time of great change is upon you. It might affect where you live. It’s lucky, and occurs now to early June. During the same period, your romantic, creative and child-oriented projects/links will tread water – that gives you the time and focus to concentrate on this change. It is the first of two steps – the second one occurs November to July 2012. That second one won’t be so much lucky as “telling,” perhaps hectic, certainly filled with determination. Make your move soon. Invest, commit, seek sexual intimacy, change your lifestyle. Thursday night to Saturday holds clues!

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Tackle chores Sunday – be safe with tools, electricity. This eve to Tuesday afternoon brings happy, flirty, friendly relationships. Don’t be argumentative Monday. Though mid-week tempts you toward research, investments or sexual intimacy, or nudges you to make a commitment to a person or lifestyle, you’d be wise to wait. Your future will develop best if right now you are social, if you play, plan and dream. Rewards come from past efforts, not present ones. Gentle, mellow love and understanding, travel and legal success float in late Thursday night through Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: Legal matters might slow now to June, particularly those involving work, health or machinery. So might far travel, religious projects and higher studies – in these, “revisit old haunts.” For instance, you’ll succeed in school if you resurrect an old project or study subjects you’ve studied before. Sunday afternoon to Tuesday brings work and health concerns. The weeks ahead reward ambition, so plunge into tasks. Relationships can be irksome midweek. Be diplomatic; don’t push your own agenda. Secrets, depths, sexual attractions and finances – all luckily – fill Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The weeks ahead beneficially emphasize higher learning, legal affairs, far travel, cultural involvements/rituals and gentle love. Sleep in Sunday morning. This eve to Tuesday brings romantic situations, pleasure and beauty, passion and risk. Your creative juices flow. Gambling, however, might hurt your bank account. Reject investments for now. (Until June, new investments are ill advised. Stick with those already in the works.) Work and health issues arrive late Tuesday through Thursday. Good and bad luck are mixed, so just plod ahead. Relationships excite, reward Friday/Saturday!

One Call Does It All

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The month ahead emphasizes romance, creativity and speculative luck. Until June, you stand on the edge of momentous events, prospects and opportunities. You might marry. For the best luck, relocate, negotiate, seek agreements and contracts, interface with the public, grab opportunities, form business partnerships or alliances, or seek marriage. (Some Librans, bound in unhappiness, might divorce now. But this influence might also “cure” your marriage. Can you give it one more try?) Rest Sunday daytime. This eve to Tuesday, your energy and charisma soar. Money caution mid-week. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your workload will increase now to June. Just plod through if you have no enthusiasm. But realize this work can be the entry hall to one or two major career or business opportunities, to arrive after May, into mid-2012. For the next six years, your money fortunes are on an extended rise! But it starts with work. Tamp down any domestic friction to late February: be gentle, kind. Pride wrecks love. Lie low, rest early week. Your energy surges back Tuesday night through Thursday. Thursday night to Saturday brings the first hint of your coming money luck. Get frequent rest these weeks. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Love, romance, creative projects, speculation, sports, risks, selfexpression, dealings with children – these meet great luck and opportunity now to June. The month ahead features talk, travel, curiosity – so get curious! Travel and casual conversations can – no, will – lead to good things, romance among them! Uphold your reputation early Sunday. This eve to Tuesday brings social delights, flirtations and wish fulfilment! Retreat, rest and contemplate future obstacles mid-week. Your energy and charisma climb Thursday night to Saturday – start projects, ask favours, see and be seen.

Ads continued on next page

Jan. 23 - Jan. 20 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The weeks ahead emphasize money, earnings, buying/selling, possessions, sensual attractions and memory. Accept surface appearances; they will tend to be true, and questioning will “sour the atmosphere.” Lots of money might come! But be self-disciplined: spending can get out of control. Now to June, you are powerfully favoured to purchase (and sell) real estate, to heal family issues, to find security, and to end limiting situations, projects and conditions. (You might see and chuck these luckily Friday/Saturday.) February is one of the best months to combine money and property. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness soar for the next few weeks. Start important projects, ask favours, seek permission, impress bosses, colleagues. Your determination and sex appeal (which are always linked) are unusually high now through February. Sunday morning has a mysterious cast, but this eve toTuesday brings wisdom, gentle love and understanding. Be ambitious midweek, but be diplomatic. You might push just because you have extra energy, but others could feel you’re abrasive. Wishes come true Friday/Saturday – expect social joys, entertainment, flirtation, happiness! Pisces Feb.19-March 20: Retreat for a while.Gather your energies and your thoughts. Rest, contemplate, let the world go by. Be charitable, spiritual. The few weeks ahead favour dealing with government, taxes, institutions and large corporations. Study a money plan, rework it until it’s perfect. Soon – by March at the latest – money will start flowing your way, perhaps a huge pile of money. Students could win scholarships, consultants might land a big client, etc. But now is preparation time. Avoid belligerent people, unsavoury places. Sunday to Tuesday is mysterious. Be ambitious Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Just wanted to thank Team Diverse, and the outstanding installers working with Diverse Flooring. Right from start to finish we were impressed with the professional, courteous manner of everyone on your team. We were called each day to confirm the time the installers would arrive and were continually called to make sure we were happy and if there was anything you could do for us. The end results are fantastic; we love all our new flooring and would highly recommend Diverse Flooring! Enthusiastically
