Choking bus driver nets no time in jail Bus drivers outraged, saying victim traumatized. by Amy Steele asteele@mrtimes.com

A 39-year-old man who choked a female bus driver so hard he lifted her right out of her seat received a threemonth conditional sentence and nine months probation Thursday. The sentence has outraged other bus drivers, who were hoping for a stiffer penalty to deter future assaults against bus drivers. Bus driver Christine Morrison described the sentence as “totally unacceptable.” “This guy actually choked our operator to the point where she was passed out and blacked out on the floor and he gets three months of house arrest and nine months of probation,” she said. “These are things we face every single day.” Morrison said she’s been assaulted twice. Once when she missed a bus stop a man hit her over her wrist with his umbrella. “I don’t think there’s an operator, and we have 3,700 members, who hasn’t had some kind of attack on them whether it be verbal or physical. Spitting is a huge issue for us,” she said. Morrison said she wishes it would have been a stiffer sentence that sent a stronger message to the public. “If those two passengers hadn’t been there who knows what would have happened,” she said. Court heard that Colin Moore only stopped choking the driver after two passengers pulled him off of her. The assault occurred in Maple Ridge on the 701 Coquitlam Centre bus at 248 Street and Dewdney Trunk Road on the evening March 5, 2009. The incident began when another bus driver warned the female driver that Moore was drunk and causing a disturbance on his bus. While the driver was relaying that information Moore began banging on the doors of the bus and the other driver told the female driver not to let him on. Moore then asked

for directions and the female bus driver gave him some. He thanked her, cursed the other driver and then left. When the female bus driver was letting two other passengers onto the bus Moore reappeared and came onto the bus. He began screaming at her for giving faulty directions. He then lunged closer to her, grabbed her by the throat with both hands and pushed her back into her seat. She tried to radio for help but couldn’t do so because he was squeezing her throat so hard. She was eventually able to push an alarm button. The two passengers she had let on attempted to pull Moore off her but he continued to choke her, lifting her out of her seat. Finally the passengers pulled Moore off of her and got him off the bus. Once outside the bus Moore grabbed one of the passenger’s throats and the passenger had to hit him on the head to get his hands off his throat. He managed to restrain Moore on the ground until police arrived. Police found the female bus driver on the floor of the bus crying and shaking. Port Coquitlam Provincial Court Judge Pedro de Couto called the offence “disturbing.” “Here she was just minding her own business going about getting ready to do her job to serve the public,” said de Couto. “I can’t imagine the trauma and fear she was going through (during the assault). She must have thought she was dealing with a madman.” de Couto pointed out that the woman now requires counselling, needs to take sleep medication and suffers from anxiety. He read part of her victim impact statement where the bus driver wrote: “You have changed me. I don’t know if I will be the same after all this.” Moore’s defence lawyer asked for a conditional discharge for his client but de Couto said that would send the “wrong message” to the public and could bring the respect for the justice system into disrepute.

Const. Greg Mainwood conducted a roadside breathalyzer test last Friday on the Abernethy Connector. The man blew 0.0 and was sent on his way. lone, she stood, on a deserted corner underneath Golden Ears Way. It was 2:15 a.m. and the only sounds heard were the occasional vehicles rumbling by overhead, and quiet sobbing as she waited for a ride to take her home. The woman rubbed her sleeveless arms to combat the cool night air, then wiped away some tears. Cpl. Dale Somerville, decked out in his knee-high motorcycle boots, glanced at the woman and wandered over as she continued to cry. She smiled sheepishly and looked up at the officer, as if expecting some kind words of encouragement. “I need the keys, ma’am,” he said. The smile drained from her face. She handed over the keys and the officer walked away. She continued staring down the empty road, waiting for her ride to arrive. Cpl. Somerville wasn’t being callous. He had already ensured the woman had a ride home and he needed the keys so the large black pickup truck could be towed away. But that doesn’t mean he had sympathy, either. In his job with the local RCMP’s traffic section, he was out there last Friday night and early Saturday morning trying to catch drunk drivers. He’d loved to be somewhere else, perhaps in bed sleeping, but as long as there are people driving drunk, he has a job to do. And they did it on this night. The woman standing on the deserted corner with the tears in her eyes had to watch as her male companion was handcuffed and put into a police car for blowing more than twice the legal limit. The TIMES was there in the early hours to witness a team of RCMP stake out this area under the bridge. It’s a good spot because drivers coming in all directions have nowhere to turn off before they hit the police checkpoint. If they do pull a U-turn, they get chased down.

This was the third spot of the evening/morning for the team. At 9 p.m. on Friday night they were at 287 Street and Lougheed Highway. At 7 p.m. they were on the Abernethy Connector near 203 Street. The TIMES joined the team at the first checkpoint of the night. The team set up vehicles on both sides of the road at the middle of an S-curve, with another vehicle set up down the road. That vehicle contained the Automated Licence Plate Reader, which is on loan from the regional traffic services division. The vehicle has cameras attached to the roof that scan and take a photo of each licence plate that rolls by. That information is instantly fed into a computer that searches the history of the plate. It can tell if someone is prohibited from driving or if a vehicle is stolen. The officer can then quickly relay that information to the officers stopping the vehicles. But the main goal is to catch drunk drivers and that takes a certain skill. Some of the officers call it “reasonable suspicion” and it’s based on basic observation skills and the gift of gab. When a vehicle comes to a stop, the officer leans in nice and close in order to get a whiff of the driver for alcohol. Some drivers who have been drinking try to cover up the smell by smoking a lot of cigarettes, but if an officer is suspicious they just find a way to get them out of the vehicle. Other impaired drivers are chewing giant wads of gum, but police say that doesn’t work. Still others guzzle mouthwash, but when a person has minty-fresh breath at 2 a.m., that’s a bit of a tip-off. Smell is just one technique. Officers also chat people up and listen for slurred speech or excessive babbling from a nervous driver. They also study people’s movements, such as covering their mouths when they talk.

Upfront In Brief Campfire ban approved for coastal region

If you want to eat hot food during your weekend camping trip, make sure to take a portable stove. Campfires will be prohibited in B.C.’s coastal region starting Friday at noon. Hot, dry weather throughout the area necessitated the ban, according to the B.C. Coastal Fire Centre. “It’s getting drier all the time,” wildfire information officer Rosalie Macaulay said Wednesday. Most of the coastal region is under a high to extreme fire danger rating, she said. The ban will remain in effect until conditions change. Vancouver has not yet banned smoking and charcoal or woodburning barbecues in parks. Under the coastal region restrictions, portable tiki torches and fireworks are also prohibited. Small propane camping stoves can be used as long as the flame does not exceed 15 centimetres. The fine for defying the ban is $345. “If their campfire does cause a wildfire, they could be responsible for paying for that,” Macaulay said. Penalties for starting a wildfire could include three years in jail and up to $1 million in fines, according to a news release from the Ministry of Forests and Range. Macaulay urges people to be careful when they are out in the forest. “Don’t throw out any cigarette butts,” she said. ATVs and motorcycles can also create sparks that cause fires. The ban spans from the Lower Mainland to the Coast Mountains and includes Vancouver Island. It does not apply within two kilometres of the Island’s western coast because of damper conditions there, Macaulay said. The ban covers private property not governed by a municipality or district, and provincial and federal parks. At this time, no campfire bans have been issued by B.C.’s five other fire centres. Fire ratings have not yet escalated to extreme in Vancouver’s parks, said Joyce Courtney of the Vancouver park board. But the hazard remains high in Stanley Park and Vancouver’s other forested parks, she said. — Postmedia Network

Dog owner warns of coyote attacks by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Good-morning Sunshine — Sunny for short — was running along the dikes with her owner Ada-Lou Ellett early on a Friday morning when he stopped to stare into the bushes. All of a sudden, the six-pound Sunny was rolling in the dirt fighting off a coyote pup that had come out looking for breakfast. Ellett started screaming and yelling at the coyote and it eventually dropped Sunny and took off back into the bushes. “It should have been the end of him. but it wasn’t,” Ellett said. “We’ve really cheated death...it is nothing short of a miracle that he survived it.” After making sure Sunny’s neck wasn’t broken, Ellett took him to the East Ridge Animal Hospital. Sunny had to wait three hours for the surgery and the whole time Ellett did therapeutic touch on her dog. Ellett is trained as a pediatric “It should have been the end physiotherapist but she currently of him, but it wasn’t We’ve really practices therapeutic touch for both adults and children. cheated death.” Sunny had to have 35 staples and stitches to his body. After Ada-Lou Ellett the surgery, Ellett spent another two hours doing therapeutic touch on Sunny. In addition to the lacerations, he had a bruised lung and two of his ribs had separated. Ellett figured the only reason the coyote didn’t kill him was because he was too young and got scared off when she started yelling and screaming. An adult coyote would not have dropped the dog but would have crushed him with its powerful jaws and carried him off for breakfast. “It’s a miracle he’s alive,” Ellett said. Sunny is currently on “sick leave,” Ellett said, as he normally helps her in her therapeutic touch sessions, helping to calm down anxious children and adults. She runs her Listening Hands therapy from her home. “My clients absolutely adore him...because he’s like a second set of hands,” Ellett said. Ellett said she too often hears stories about dogs being killed by wild animals and Sunny’s fate could have been the same. She has been running on the trails with her dog for six years and, while he’s always within her sight, he has usually been off-leash. “I want people to be aware the trails with a little dog are so dangerous,” Ellett said.

Officers use their senses to sniff out offenders IMPAIRED, From Page 1 “Experience is a big asset,” says Cpl. Somerville. “You just get to know the gestures and movements of an impaired driver.” They also look people in the eyes. An impaired driver has a distinctive glassy look in their eyes. Officers also ask direct questions about if the driver has been drinking. On this Friday night, one driver readily admits to drinking a beer more than an hour previously. “Did you eat anything since then?” Const. Greg Mainwood asks. The man said he ate some pizza. Satisfied with the conversation, the driver is sent on his way. Other drivers are not so honest. Const. Mitch Gordon is considered the best in the

detachment at catching drunk drivers. At least he caught the most in 2009. A guy in a pick-up truck swears to Const. Gordon that he hasn’t had anything to drink, but the officer isn’t buying it. He smells it on the guy’s breath and tells him to get out of the vehicle. The man, who looks to be in his 60s, stands as Const. Gordon pulls out the kit that contains the roadside screening device, also known as the breathalyzer. Const. tells the driver to spit out his gum and get ready to be tested. It’s at this point that the main shyly admits to having had a beer 45 minutes prior to getting pulled over. The man blows .032, which is under the limit. As the driver heads back to his vehicle he stops and turns to Const. Gordon. He apologizes.

“A lot of people get that fear when they are pulled over,” Const. Gordon says. “So they lie, but unless the officer is not switched on, he is going to smell the alcohol. It’s better to be honest.” Others aren’t trying to avoid getting caught. They just don’t like getting pulled over and questioned. A man in his 60s who was pulled over only opened his window a crack and was belligerent from the start. The driver said the officer was part of the Gestapo so he started speaking German to the constable. He was told to get out of his vehicle. Then the officer pulled out the breathalyzer and told the driver to blow into the mouthpiece. The man blew 0.0 and was sent on his way. The 7 p.m. session was really just a warm up for the later sessions, but it bore some fruit.

A driver was caught driving without his “N” visible (a $109 fine). Others were caught talking on their cell phones or not wearing their seatbelts. All got the message that the police were watching them in case they decide to drink and drive. The officers said the real action would start when they set up the 12:30 a.m. checkpoint. That’s when they catch a lot of people leaving the bars after drinking. They mix up the locations, sometimes really close to local bars. That ticks off the bar owners, but the officers say that isn’t their concern. People continue to drink and drive and it’s actually getting worse. According to recent Statistics Canada numbers, after 25 years of general decline, impaired driving offences increased for the third consecutive year, up three per

cent in 2009. This most recent night was no exception. Aside from the man nailed at the start of this story, a driver with an “N” in his window blew .021. There is a zero tolerance for new drivers so the man was handed a 12-hour suspension and had to call a cab. Two more drivers were nailed at around 3 a.m. Both blew more than twice the legal limit and were arrested. “This team’s main job is catching impaired drivers,” says Cpl. Somerville. “They love it and they’re good at it.” As Cpl. Somerville speaks, the crying woman has been picked up by her ride. The only sound now is of a hydraulic hoist as it lifts the shiny black vehicle onto the tow truck. ❚ Read the After Deadline blog for more on this story at www.mrtimes. com.

❚ News Bylaws

Threats brought on by grow-ops concern Pitt council Pitt Meadows council is unanimously opposed to having marijuana growoperations in their city because of the potential problems they can bring with them. An amendment to Pitt Meadows land use bylaw passed third reading at Tuesday’s council meeting to ensure marijuana can’t be grown as an agricultural activity or home-based business. The amendment to the bylaw clarifies that growoperations are not allowed as home-based businesses in any city zone nor as agricultural operations. This would apply to

licences from Health Canada permitting people to grow marijuana for the use of other people. A public hearing was held at Tuesday’s regular council meeting before council voted on the amendment. One woman spoke at the meeting, explaining how she works with people who use marijuana because they suffer from chronic illnesses. She pointed out the cost of buying marijuana from Health Canada is about $5 per gram, but people with, for example, multiple sclerosis need up to 20 grams per day to control their symptoms. Councillor Deb Walters said

she sympathized with people who need medical marijuana but she has a problem with having grow-operations. She added that the federal government didn’t provide resources to municipalities to keep their citizens safe in conjunction with issuing licences. Coun. Doug Bing said he has no problem being known as the “bucolic ban-happy capital of Canada,” referring to comments made about the city in a national publication, because of the threats of fire and grow-rips associated with grow-operations in residential areas. “We’ve seen enough problems in the last few

GEB noise drops, but not enough by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

TransLink is still working on lowering the level of noise from the expansion joints on the Golden Ears Bridge and will be testing a Japanese-made product at the south end of the span. A click-clack or burping noise can be heard as cars drive over the expansion joints on the new bridge and has been the subject of numerous complaints from residents in south Pitt Meadows. The joints at the north end of the bridge were filled with neoprene earlier this year and when the sound was measured, it had dropped three decibels, according to

TransLink spokesperson Ken Hardie. TransLink is trying a new material from Japan on the expansion joints at the south end of the bridge; it’s a foam called EPDM and TransLink is hoping it will worker better than the neoprene. If it does work better and reduces the noise more than the material used at the north end, TransLink will consider filling the north expansion joints with the new material. In November, TransLink representatives held a meeting on the noise issue and at that time planned to either fill in the joints with a loose, porous material developed by the Japanese, replace the joints’ rubber seal with a “hump seal” or bolt sinus plates over the beams to form an interlocking finger joint.

years to realize we’re doing the right thing,” he said. Coun. Gwen O’Connell pointed out the amendment to the bylaw is not a discussion about legalizing marijuana. Health Canada has not grasped the depth of the issue of illegal operations, Mayor Don MacLean said, adding that people with licences to grow marijuana are “obviously” taking advantage of the situation with some places growing up to 1,500 plants more than they are allowed.

The third reading of the land use bylaw amendment was carried unanimously by council.

No jail for shallow grave Stuart Ernest Gardner pleads guilty to offering an indignity to human remains. Fifty-five-year-old Stuart Ernest Gardner has been given a four-month conditional sentence on the charge of interfering with or offering an indignity to a dead body or human remains. Gardner was given credit for time served for 27 days in jail. Gardner was charged after police found the body of 52-year-old Robert Trouton in a shallow grave while executing a search warrant on a property in the 28000

block of 112 Avenue in Whonnock on June 24. Police found 1,000 marijuana plants within the residence. Neil McKenzie, spokesperson for the provincial Crown, said Trouton and Gardner were roommates and Trouton had been suffering “ill health” and died. Gardner, not wanting to “draw attention” to the grow-op, decided to bury Trouton in the backyard. “An individual has a certain obligation with

respect to how a dead body is dealt with,” said McKenzie about why Gardner was charged. Police say the exact case of death hasn’t been determined but foul play hasn’t been established in Trouton’s death. Gardner will be under a curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will be required to complete 15 hours of community work service. Gardner still faces drug charges in relation to the grow-op.

Man who shot baby has other charges stayed Charges have been stayed against a New Westminster man accused of pistol-whipping and tying up another man in Port Coquitlam. Jeremy Norman Joseph Jesson, 37, was charged with robbery, unlawful confinement, using an imitation firearm, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon. A three-day trial was set to begin in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court on Wednesday. Neil Mackenzie, spokesman for the Criminal Justice Branch, said that after the evidence was reviewed by senior Crown prosecutors, they concluded that the case should be resolved with a peace bond. A peace bond is a criminal court order that is used when someone fears, on reasonable grounds, that another person will harm them or their family or damage their property. The terms of Jesson’s peace bond, which lasts for one year, include no contact with the complainant or his family and no possessing weapons.

Coquitlam RCMP were called to a Port Coquitlam condo suite on Aug. 25, 2009, after a man allegedly used a firearm to assault another person. The suspect allegedly left his victim tied up in the suite, then escaped in the victim’s vehicle. Police issued a news release about the incident six days later saying Jesson was a suspect and calling him “armed and dangerous” and a “violent offender.” In 2007, Jesson was convicted of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and possession of a restricted weapon for his role in the 2005 shooting at a Maple Ridge apartment. On April 6, 2005, Jesson fired a shot at his estranged girlfriend’s rental suite, hitting his one-year-old daughter. The child recovered from her injuries. Construction ‘killing’ Lougheed businesses asteele@mrtimes.com

on Flood’s business at Satin Slipper Dance Wear has been down about 60 per cent since construction began on Lougheed Highway between 223 and 224 Street in May. “It’s really killed business. We’ve done $3 today,” said Flood when The TIMES came visiting. Flood isn’t the only business owner who’s been negatively impacted by the construction to enhance the downtown core due to reduced parking and difficulty for pedestrians to physically get to the businesses. The $5.6 million project, which is in the second phase, will include upgrade sidewalks and include new benches, garbage receptacles, trees, streetlights and water and sewer pipes on Lougheed between 222 Street and 224 Street. The first phase, on 224 Street, is almost complete. “It’s supposed to be nice but why do we need benches on Lougheed? Who wants to sit out there in the exhaust,” said Flood. Flood said he’s “really hurting” and isn’t even making enough to pay the rent. “You have to dip it out of your pocket,” he said. “They should be doing something for the merchants.” Aside from compensation Flood would also like to see construction done at night so it didn’t disrupt traffic. Kim Guthro, owner of Defiance Body Studio, is also

Don Flood on Lougheed Highway. Amy Steele/TIMES she said. “It just seems like we’re being kicked and kicked and kicked again.” She isn’t convinced the construction project will improve business in the future. “We’re on Lougheed Highway. That’s all we really need. People are going down Lougheed no matter what.” Ashif Jamal, owner of Sure Copy, said customers have complained that it’s hard to find parking. “It’s a lot slower now, especially with walk in traffic,” he said. “This is really a nuisance.” Ron Kalmakoff, owner of Little Cricket Gift Gallery, said he hasn’t been negatively impacted yet due to loyal customers. “So far so good. We’ll see what happens,” he said. “At this point I don’t have a lot of complaints.” He said he’s glad construction is happening

upset about the impact on her business and estimates it’s down 50 to 60 per cent. “It’s killing us truthfully. We have no sidewalk. They’re right beside our door,” she said. “It has been unbelievably dead.” Normally June, July and August are the busiest times for her tattoo and piercing business and carry her through the early part of the fall when it’s slower. “I’m probably going to have to cut into my savings,” she said, adding she’s had to cut staff shifts. “They have mortgages and they’re trying to put food on their tables. I feel terrible...I have a mortgage myself and I’m literally working for free.” Guthro said her rent has just been jacked up and she’s dealing with HST fallout as well as construction. “The city doesn’t really care,”

now when it’s sunny out and people don’t mind walking as much as opposed to during rainy weather. He’s looking forward to the street appearing more pedestrian friendly with the new enhancements. Kalmakoff said he feels for the newer businesses that have sprung up on the street recently, but because his business is established he hasn’t felt the same pain. He describes the beautification project as “long overdue” and is hopeful that some business owners will decide to upgrade their storefronts to further enhance the area. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said he empathizes with business owners but believes it will be “short-term pain for long-term gain.” He said the district learned from the first phase on 224 Street and created a project liaison committee that’s been meeting to minimize any problems related to construction. Daykin emphasized the project isn’t just beautification but also necessary infrastructure upgrading. “There’s new services underground that are going to look after them. It’s going to be...much more pedestrian friendly, just the atmosphere on the street is going to be much better than it was. I think it’s an investment in the downtown and indirectly in their business. For the downtown to succeed it needs

to look good. It needs to be attractive,” said Daykin. He added that some of the upcoming construction will be done at night to minimize disruption.

Bouncer arrested for assault Police are recommending assault charges against a bouncer at Roosters Cabaret. Police were called to the bar, which is located in the 19000 block of Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, just after midnight on July 22. A 20-year-old Mission man complained about being beaten up in front of the business by one of the bouncers. Police investigated and arrested a 34-year-old Surrey man. He was later released, but will be appearing in court in September, 2010. Paramedics with B.C. Ambulance Service treated the victim at the scene.

Narcotics stolen from pharmacy A thief stole narcotics from Haney Pharmacy on July 20. The theft occurred at 4 a.m. when the thief broke through the front door. A citizen saw a suspect riding his bicycle away from the business, which is located in the 22100 block of Dewdney Trunk Road. The suspect is described as a male, 5’10, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and tancoloured shorts. He rode away west along Dewdney Trunk Road on a dark-coloured bike that had a blue recycling box strapped to the front.

Woman refuses breathalyzer Police are recommending charges of impaired driving and failing to provide suitable samples of breath for an analysis after a two-vehicle collision. At 9:30 p.m on July 20 a 1998 Toyota 4Runner hit a parked 1996 Oldsmobile in the 23500 block of Kanaka Way in Maple Ridge. The 21-year-old female driver of the Toyota appeared drunk and was asked for a breath sample. She was brought back to the Ridge

Meadows RCMP Detachment where she refused to supply samples of her breath.

Crack, meth, pills seized Police seized crack cocaine and crystal meth from a residence in the 12000 block of 228 Street and are recommending charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking against a 47-year-old man who lives at the residence. Police obtained a warrant to search the home and seized more than 28 grams of crack cocaine, some crystal meth and a quantity of unknown pills. Police found nine people inside the residence, but charges are only being recommended against the one man.

Convenience store robbed Police are investigating a convenience store robbery where the thief got away with money and cigarettes. The incident occurred at 6:50 p.m. on July 19 when a lone male walked into the North St. Market in the 22400 block of North Avenue, produced a weapon and demanded money and cigarettes. He then went behind the front counter, helped himself to cash from the till and cigarettes. He then ran out of the store. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 17 years of age, 5’3, with short blonde hair. He had a blue bandana on his head, and was wearing a black T-shirt, and black pants. The suspect ran east on North Avenue toward 225 Street. A police dog from the RCMP Lower Mainland District Police Service Dog Section was brought in, but the dog was unable to track the suspect due to high volume of pedestrians and vehicles in the area.

❚ Our View

Legal victory honours cops

With all the negative news about police over the past few years, it’s doubly good news to hear that a B.C. police officer has won a recent legal victory. The officer, a member of the Transit Authority Policy, was injured stopping a drunk driver in 2008 in Chilliwack. The unarmed, off-duty constable spotted the weaving truck as it clipped a parked car. He called for on-duty officers, but no one was close by, as they were at another emergency. The officer tried to stop the driver himself. In return, he was repeatedly punched. The driver shoved the officer out of the truck, and then dragged the officer and ran over his arm. Battered, the officer still managed to get up and arrest the driver. The legal battle came when the officer tried to get WorkSafeBC to compensate him for his injuries. The agency said the officer was off duty, and therefore it was not a workplace injury. A WCB Appeals Tribunal has agreed that officers, who have sworn an oath to keep the peace, can place themselves on duty to prevent a crime. The ideals of service — of putting the security and safety of others above their own — is the source of the public’s respect for police officers. Police who consider themselves on duty at all times, whenever they are needed, are the kind of officers we need. And a ruling like this one goes a small way towards acknowledging their work.

Twenty-three per cent. That’s the proportion of B.C. residents who now support Premier Gordon Campbell’s Liberal government, according to poll results released recently. It’s a shockingly low number, and pollsters are attributing it, at least in part, to voters’ anger over the HST. To put the numbers in perspective, the Liberals have now lost half their popular support, since 46 per cent of B.C. voters cast a ballot for them during the 2009 election. Mario Canseco, vice-president of public affairs for Angus Reid Public Opinion, called the drop “monumental.” “We thought [the party’s ranking in June] was low, but now they’re at 23 [per cent] in July, so it’s definitely related to the HST, which has been remarkably unpopular all throughout B.C.,” Canseco said. That the Liberals are taking a hit in the polls is not surprising. Results show that 30 per cent of B.C. residents believe the new tax will severely affect their household finances. Seventy per cent of 801 online poll participants indicated they will dine out less often as a result of the HST, while 62 per cent plan to attend fewer concerts or sporting events. Sixty per cent plan to spend less time at movies or the theatre, 55 per cent plan to buy fewer newspapers or magazines and 49 per cent indicated they will pay fewer visits to the dry cleaner. Whether those plans last past the first few weeks of cash register shock over the HST remains to be seen. But it’s clear that something about the tax has shaken up B.C. politics. What we’ll all be watching for is to see if that translates into a change at the ballot box. ■ Your View This week’s question If the Evergreen Line is built, do you plan on using it for your daily commute? Editor:

We have so many beautiful places to shop in Maple Ridge. Helpful shopkeepers eager to show us their wares. So why is it that so many people complain about the shopping opportunities in Maple Ridge? Many times shops open then close soon after in defeat. Why is this? I believe it has much to do with the fact that the owners of these shops have given the responsibility of managing the parking for the shops over to another company. A company for which there is no incentive whatsoever to concern themselves with whether the shops have customers or not. In fact, the company that manages the parking spaces for the shops actually make a lot more money through handing out parking violations to the people parking in a spot who are not shopping at a particular store the spot is assigned to. Once slammed with a $50, $70 fine, or even having one’s car towed away, will make even the most loyal shopping think twice before going back. I had one of these unfortunate and unreasonable experiences myself while shopping locally. I noticed that the parking lot that served the shop where I made a purchase — (before going) into another shop close by that should have been but apparently is not serviced by the same parking lot — was usually...nearly void of cars. I for one will think twice before parking my car in nearly any parking space in this town because most of the spaces I have discovered are managed by the same company. No one can afford to pay for tickets. They don’t want to play these games. Since this happened, I have found out the merchants in this town are pulling their hair out in frustration over this, as they have lost many customers over it. I have been living, working and shopping in this community since 1953. I love the many charming shops that define my hometown. There are many great deals to be had. We need to be able to park our cars and walk into shops without fear. Harry Neufeld Maple Ridge

Neighbours demand too much Editor:

Re: Vacant lot a fire hazard, says manager, TIMES, July 20 Comments about a fear that a grass fire is a hazard seem almost bizarre. If Jim Osler (pictured here) is fearful of a grass fire he should keep grass short near the property line. How far must a neighbour go to satisfy their neighbour’s fears. I once had a neighbour wanting me to cut a tree because he thought it might fall on his car. A friend told me his neighbour wanted him to clean out his gutters because his tree leaves fell on his roof. It is like many who move to Maple Ridge and want to shoot all coyotes because their pets are in danger. If Jim Osler fears the grass he can build a brick wall around his place. Dan Banov Maple Ridge

MP must answer Editor:

An open letter to Randy Kamp, M.P. For years you have been providing me with your opinions on a wide range of issues. Today, I ask for your opinion on an issue which is very important to me personally. My daughter, who grew up in Maple Ridge, was shot, arrested, detained for 30 hours, then released on bail after attempting to participate in a peaceful protest in Toronto on June 27th. She is facing a criminal charge which could impact her for the rest of her life. My research on the security measures used in Toronto during the G20 summit

leads me to believe that the security efforts were deeply flawed. While your leader was busy pledging to cut deficits and provide money for women and children in Africa, he went ahead and spent $1 billion (so far) on a security effort which had the police outnumbering the protestors two to one.

This police effort treated freedom of speech, freedom of the press and the right to assemble peacefully, (which are all guaranteed in our constitution) with reckless disregard. Although there was some unfortunate property damage that the police seem to have been unable to stop, no protestors hurt other human beings. The police, on the other hand, hurt many people, while they themselves remained protected in their expensive riot gear. They treated innocent people as criminals for attempting to make themselves heard in areas that had been officially designated as free speech zones. Mr. Kamp, I need you to know that many, many people need to see an independent inquiry with subpoena powers completed before they can sleep peacefully again. The arrest of my daughter has jolted me out of complacency and made me take a hard look at the state of this democracy. What I have been seeing is making me cringe. It’s not hard to find. It’s actually all over the Internet right now. Are you or are you not in favour of an independent inquiry into the G20 which has subpoena powers? Please explain your answer to your

Farming land not economically viable locally Editor:

I doubt that some of the objections from certain letter writers depend on agriculture for their living or own agricultural property themselves. I do. I have a different opinion of the Pelton development plan. Based on my knowledge and also as a grower myself, I believe it is virtually impossible for the land to be farmed economically. Much of it has been operated as an above-theground-industrial-seeding operation. The seeding business has become uneconomic of late. This land at present is suitable for growing little else but grass. The Pelton development plan would offer our community with various opportunities, a good tax base for the community, employment opportunities, also includes green space. This property is located at the corridor of Golden Ears Way, affording industrial, commercial growth that would benefit our community for now and the future to come. Let’s be able to work and live and prosper in our community. Tony Duyvesteyn Maple Ridge

Mother Nature doesn’t file tax returns Editor:

Re: Slide rules, TIMES Mailbag, July 20 Sandra, after I read your article, I called Canada revenue and taxation. And guess what? Mother Nature hasn’t filed taxes for the last 45 years, unlike logging and mining companies, etc. You know, those nasty things that are called net income, capital gains and so forth. So unfortunately, I blew the whistle and anytime soon I would imagine Mother Nature will be getting audited. Hmmm, time to go shopping at Wal-Mart with your tax return. Sharon Russell Maple Ridge

❚ Community Metro Vancouver

Waste committee backs trash incineration plans Stories by Kelly Sinoski Postmedia Network

M

etro Vancouver’s waste committee is sticking with a proposal to build a trash incinerator in the region, despite widespread opposition from communities — including Maple Ridge council — and warnings that the provincial government will reject the project. The committee agreed Wednesday to recommend the Metro board approve a plan that includes investigating “additional publicly owned waste-toenergy capacity” in Metro Vancouver. The full Metro board will consider the plan on July 30 before it goes to Environment Minister Barry Penner for final approval. Penner has already reminded Metro that it has other options, including expanding the Cache Creek landfill and a proposal to build an incinerator in Gold River on Vancouver Island. Communities in the Fraser Valley, fearing increased air pollution, have voted unanimously against the incinerator proposal. At least four Metro municipalities, including Vancouver, have said they won’t support incineration until the region has explored all options to reduce waste.

“I’m very doubtful if an in-region waste facility would pass scrutiny by the provincial government,” said Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini, who voted against the plan. “I want to go to Victoria with something that has a reasonable chance. Our choices are waste to energy outside the region or landfill, and I’m not prepared to accept a landfill.” Trasolini and Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, chairman of the solid waste committee, suggested Metro consider building an incinerator outside the region. Moore said he’s comfortable with incinerator technology, but predicted “fierce” opposition to it being built in Metro. He thought there would be multiple bidders to host it outside the region. But Metro’s chief administrator, Johnny Carline, said a $470million incinerator in the region remains the preferred option. Metro would get the revenue from electricity and heat sales and it would be cheaper than trucking the trash away. Carline urged Metro to do its homework on the incinerator proposal first and consider alternatives later if it isn’t found to be feasible. He said there is no science to back the contention that an incinerator would foul Fraser Valley air.

Patricia Ross, chairwoman of the Fraser Valley regional district, said she was disappointed by the committee’s decision. But she noted the proposal still has to get past the Metro board and the environment minister. Ross pointed out that the incinerator proposal has drawn fire from chambers of commerce, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Wilderness Committee and Pembina Institute, among others. “There’s not a whole lot in favour. How often do we have environmentalists and the business sector united in opposition?” But Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said the incinerator was the most logical alternative to landfills. “The garbage was created here and we need to find a solution right here to deal with it,” he added. New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright agreed, but acknowledged that “it’ll be a tough sell.” The incinerator was recommended to take the 500,000 tonnes of garbage that is now trucked to the Cache Creek dump each year. Metro Vancouver produces about 1.4 million tonnes of garbage a year. The solidwaste management plan aims to raise recycling rates from 55 per cent of garbage today to 70 per cent by 2015.

· arrange a designated driver beforehand · keep money for a cab

BC’s New Impaired Driving Law BC will soon have the toughest drinking driving laws in Canada. Effective this fall, drivers who provide a failing breath sample above 0.08 percent BAC or refuse to provide a breath sample at the roadside will face an immediate, 90-day driving ban and a $500 fine.As well, they will have their vehicle impounded for 30 days, and may face criminal charges. Drivers caught in the “warn” range (between 0.05 and 0.08 percent BAC) will also face an immediate driving ban and fine. Research shows that a driver with a BAC in that range is seven times more likely to be in a fatal crash than if they have no alcohol in their body. So even after just a few drinks, you can be considered impaired.

Utilities to jump

The fees paid by Metro Vancouver residents for regional utilities -- water, sewer and garbage collection -- will jump by more than 50 per cent over the next five years, a Metro staff report predicts. The reason for the projected increases is a series of big-ticket infrastructure items such as the $820million Seymour-Capilano water filtration plant and long overdue upgrades to the Iona and Lions Gate sewage treatment plants. By 2015, the owner of an average $600,000 home in Metro Vancouver is projected to pay $665 a year for the three utilities combined, the report says. That’s up 54.4 per cent from the $428 they cost now. The report was based on the assumption that the region’s population will grow by 1.5 per cent over the five years.

Man burned by hogweed

Maple Ridge man was clearing vegetation on the Haney Bypass.

A

ccording to experts, the giant hogweed can cause both severe burns and blindness. For Maple Ridge’s Patrick Breault, he’s happy it was the former and not the latter. Breault is a contractor who clears vegetation for various clients. More than two weeks ago, he was clearing brush near the Haney Bypass when a piece of giant hogweed brushed against his arm. It didn’t seem like much at the time, but it got ugly the next day. “It started to turn my skin a little pinkish and swelled up like a rash,” he told The TIMES. “Then on day two, it started to turn into more like a third-degree burn. I didn’t know what was happening.” It turned out to be giant hogweed, which is starting to crop up across Metro Vancouver, prompting local governments to take action to eradicate it. Breault turned to an oldschool remedy by putting something called silver water on it. It’s water infused with silver ions. That seems to have sped up the healing process, although weeks later the spot is still numb and severely bruised.

The giant hogweed is considered dangerous. File photo Breault says he mowed down the hogweed where he found it and will be monitoring it to ensure it doesn’t grow back. There have been other instances of hogweed being sighted in the District of Maple Ridge — at 272 and Dewdney Trunk Road and on 124 Avenue. District staff has removed the plants there. People are asked to report any sightings to the Invasive Plant Council of British Columbia. They

are attempting to create an inventory, staff and resources to deal with the growing issue. They cannot respond to complaints but do want to manage the scope of the invasive plant problem. Call 250-392-1400. ❚ Sightings of the giant hogweed on road allowances should be reported to the Operations Department at 463-9581. Sightings in parks or on parkland should be reported to the Parks Department at 467-7346.

Diane Cougar hangs toys to dry after washing them. Maria Rantanen/TIMES

Suspected toy theft shorts event by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

N

o one’s sure whether the Grinch has tried to spoil the Ridge Meadows Heritage Days or if someone was overly zealous in storing toys meant as prizes for the carnival games. But more than half the toys have gone missing and Diane Cougar with the Heritage Days Society is hoping to get some more donations before the July 31 event. Because the seniors centre has limited storage, it’s possible that someone has split up the toys and stored some of them in another area of the centre, said Paddy Godbehere, manager of the Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society. She added staff is going through cubbyholes and storage spaces and contacting staff members who are on holidays to see if anyone has misplaced the toys. A collection box was located at Curves on

Lougheed Highway for several months where women were dropping off donations for Heritage Days. “I felt bad for my friends at Curves who did all this collecting,” Cougar said. After the discovery of the missing toys, Cougar headed out shopping to see what she could get but new toys turned out to be rather expensive. She then checked out the Bibles for Mission thrift store and was able to get a large stash for just $22. And at the Ridge Meadows Hospital thrift store, she collected a few more and she has been washing them and drying them in her backyard over the past few days. The mini-carnival will be part of the Heritage Days on July 31 at Memorial Peace Park and will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be a beanbag toss, a basketball throw, a balloon dart game and an old-fashioned fish pond. ❚ If anyone wants to donate toys for Heritage Days prizes, they can be dropped off at the volunteer office at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre.

Royals win last regular game, head to B.C.s

Paddle club preps for national meet

The Ridge Meadows Royals midget AAA team won their last regular season game 7-2 over the Chilliwack Cougars on Wednesday evening at the Albion Sports Complex. The Royals have won nine games out of the last ten games played. The AAA team ends the season with 29 wins and 11 losses, and they are in third place in the league of 11 teams. They will travel to Kamloops on the August long weekend to defend the provincial title.

J

ames Telep’s back hasn’t felt so good in years – in fact, it hasn’t felt so good since he broke it 10 years ago and he attributes that to paddling on the Alouette River. Telep has been paddling in an adaptive kayak for about three months but already has set his sights on competing at the national level – and dreams of one day getting to the Paralympics. Telep has been training with the Pitt Meadows Paddling Club since May and he has found it helped his endurance and strength. He also likes the competitive aspect of paddling, and that’s why he wants to train for larger competitions like the nationals. “I love it for the exercise .

Space left in soccer camps

Visser has been making him do 250-metre sprints so that when he competes, it’ll be a breeze. Telep’s kayak is equipped with a special seat to support his back as well as straps to hold him solidly in place. The kayak also has pontoons on the side for extra support. In addition to training paddlers in Pitt Meadows Visser is involved in international training as well. She went to Florida training with the national para-

canoe team which is going to the world championships in Posnan, Poland. If 24 countries participate at the worlds, the event will get into the 2016 Paralympics. The Pitt Meadows Paddling Club has just started its PaddleALL program with several adaptive kayaks and canoes for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. For more information on the club’s programs, go to www.pmpc.ca.

The Maple Ridge Pentathlon Club sent several athletes to the nationals in Red Deer, Alta. to compete. Maple Ridge Pentathlon was represented at the Canadian Nationals in Red Deer. Maple Ridge Pentathlon coach Bob Noble and Canadian Olympic Committee representative for Pentathlon Canada won gold in the master’s division and the bronze in the men’s senior division, competing against men less than half his age. Chris Pietruczuik won the junior men’s and overall points title as well. Khrysten Gluck, 17, competed in Youth A, and was the silver medalist. This was Gluck’s first pentathlon competition and she particularly demonstrated significant skill in the epee fencing. Gluck trains with Maple Ridge Pentathlon but competes for South Africa. Erin Beckett, 17, challenged the junior division (19-21 year olds), placing sixth in a field of nine. This was her first foray back into pentathlon after missing a year of competition following a season-ending stress fracture. Erin teamed with two U.S. athletes to take bronze in the pentathlon relay in a field of ten teams. Emily Beckett, 13, won a silver medal in the Youth C division. Emily and Erin also form the B.C. Canada Games Women’s Air Pistol team. Erin will represent B.C. at the Shooting Federation of Canada Air Pistol national championships in Granby, Que. in August and has a real “shot” at making the national team. ❚

and I like to be pushed like I am here,” he said. The ambiance on the Alouette River is also a big draw. “I’d rather be out here any day than in the gym,” Telep said. “There’s nothing better than being on the water.” Telep will participate at the national qualifiers in Nanaimo on Aug. 7 and 8 but there aren’t many paddlers coming from B.C. so Telep expects to make it

Sizzlin’ summer reads for teens

Susan Redmond supplies a list of interesting books for young people to read. Join the local summer reading club at your local library.

S

chool is out for the summer. Time to read, at last. Don’t know what to choose? The library has some great suggestions. Do you like graphic novels? Based on the videogame of the same name, Prince of Persia by A.B. Sina looks at the legends behind the story. There’s plenty of action, adventure, and mayhem, along with substantial storylines that delve deep into the mythology laid out in the book. This historical fantasy is rich with political intrigue, battles, and elemental magic. Imagine you had to live the same day over and over. Samantha Kingston does just that in Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. After a night of wild partying, Samantha dies in a car accident, but instead of moving on, Sam wakes up to live the same day over again and again. The question is, will she eventually get it right? Return to Bone Tree Hill is a suspense-filled mystery by Kristin Butcher. Eighteenyear-old Jessica returns to Victoria from Australia to visit her Gran, but is haunted

by a recurring nightmare that involves the murder a young boy named Charlie. Jessica is convinced that she is the

murderer, so she and her best friend Jilly set out to solve the murder, even if it proves that Jessica is right.

Marcelo Sandoval is a 17-year-old boy on the high-functioning end of the autistic spectrum. In Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork, Marcelo faces new challenges, including romance and injustice, when he goes to work for his father in the mailroom of a corporate law firm. Not interested in fiction? Why not try these? Hip Hop World by Dalton Higgins takes a look at the history of hip hop, its origins, influences, music and style, as well as how it has evolved throughout the world. Summer is the perfect time to become a Sew Teen. In Sew Teen: Make Your Own Cool Clothes by Sheila Zent you can learn how to make the clothes that you want to wear. You learn about picking out the fabric you love and turning it into the clothes that fit both you and your personal style. Tired of the same old food? Why not try Eat Fresh Food: Awesome Recipes for Teen Chefs: More than 80 Recipes!, by Rozanne Gold? This cookbook is chock-full

of recipes for easy-to-make meals, snacks, and desserts that are delicious and healthy, too. Even if you are a beginner in the kitchen, the ample photos and clear instructions can help you make your own fresh, creatively prepared food. On your mark! Get set! Read Sunday Money: Speed! Lust! Madness! Death! A Hot Lap around America with NASCAR, by Jeff MacGregor. Jeff MacGregor and his photographer wife attended nearly every NASCAR race during the 2002 season. They met revered drivers and wacky fans, camped out in Wal-Mart parking lots and grandstands alike, and picked up a fair amount of NASCAR lore and advice (such as “Go big, baby, or don’t go”). Reading this book is almost - almost - as good as having been on the road with the MacGregors. “Get Into Character” this summer by joining the Teen Reading Club. Drop by Maple Ridge Public Library and pick up your teen reading record and bookmark. The “Get Into Character” summer reading club is for Grades 7 to 12.

For every seven days that you read this summer, you become eligible to win one of several amazing FVRL prizes, including a Laptop Computer, a Digital Camcorder or a Digital Camera. But that is not all. Win more prizes and share your thoughts and experiences with teens from across Canada by participating in the online Teen Reading Club. Log-on and register with the online Teen RC website at www. teenrc.ca. And don’t forget to come to the library on Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. to celebrate the end of Teen Summer Reading Club! Bring a book to trade with other club members. There will be prizes, snacks, and lots of fun. Susan Redmond (pictured) is a librarian at the Maple Ridge Public Library.

Wade Lee Braschuk

September 23, 1957 - May 23, 2010

After a lengthy battle with brain cancer, Wade died peacefully in his sleep at the Maple Ridge Hospice. Wade took great pride in his occupation as an electrician working in Toronto and Vancouver. He was well travelled, loved his morning coffee with a discussion over current events and and politics. His greatest joy was his involvement with his children’s activities whether it was karate, baseball, skating or dance. Wade is survived by his wife Ramona, children Briana, Ariana and Nom, mother May Dicksen, father Joe Braschuk, sisters Linda Braschuk and Trudy Reid, brother Clay Braschuk and a number of other family members and great friends. A celebration of Wade’s life will be held Saturday July 31, 2010 at the Ramada Inn, 19267 Lougheed Highway, Pitt Meadows BC from 2 pm to 6 pm. RSVP linda52@telus.net 1-800-653-6163/ 403-289-0051

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Cancer June 21-July 22: A gigantic shift peaks this summer (it began in 2008, lasts ultimately to 2024) in your relationships, career and home. You should see plenty of evidence of these forces of change this week and next. My advice is simple: be flexible, willing, eager to join forces, diplomatic, honest and loving. Then what can go permanently wrong? Nothing. You might have to deal with: A stubborn yet persuasive partner (or an almost too-alluring person!). Muffled anger in the home. A possible break-up. Unpredictable, yet unexpectedly lucky situations in your career, prestige realms or business.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Major changes began about two years ago, intensified the last few months, and peak this week and next. (With variations through the years ahead.) The present peak brings in new elements, people and situations. Expect stresses/ changes in home, security, property, all relationships, contracts, litigation, partnerships, relocation prospects and in yourself. You are now determined to enter a relationship only if it grants you security. This can cause a “muddying” effect. Amazing, bright, friendly, lucky, unexpected (and perhaps short-lived) relationships will arise – for seven years!

Taurus April 20-May 20: A major change is already underway. (It started last spring, but peaks now and lasts into 2011.) It affects your work, duty and intellectual spheres. These include such things as cultural events, love, international travel, publishing, higher learning, health, machinery/tools, employment/ employees, government, institutional, administrative, spiritual and charity areas. Your life will never be the same! But these are not painful nor “crisis” changes – you’ll do fine! My best advice: turn a challenge into success, but don’t get caught in an unfixable situation/project. August holds a major task.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22: This summer’s massive changes and stresses don’t hit you as directly as some, Leo. But the slow changes that has been building for two years peak this week and next in your work, health, machinery-related, communications, legal, educational, travelling, cultural, love, philosophical and intellectual spheres. (DON’T drive recklessly!) A letter could reveal a lawsuit, or an email could light your heart with love. Job changes might occur – but the more obvious changes are in intellectual, friendship and travel zones. Old methods will be abandoned; new ones will form (slowly, in some cases).

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Be ambitious. Many stresses and changes exist around you, but they affect others more directly; they could even create openings and opportunities for you to move forward. (Money-wise Sunday/Monday, socially Thursday.) These undergo flux: work, employment, machinery, duties toward children, management, corporate and government“organizationcharts,”institutions, spiritual and charitable interests. All these changes turn on the fulcrum of (or affect) your ability to communicate or travel. (E.g., changes “on high” might change who you communicate with, the style of report.)

Gemini May 21-June 20: It started in late 2008, intensified this spring, and peaks all summer: a series of major shifts in your sexual, financial, investment, health, romantic, creative, sports, speculation, childoriented and social spheres. Never again will these be the same – improvement’s slated! You might begin a deeply intimate relationship with someone quite conservative or of a different generation. You might completely switch your financial structure. A new creativity can be sparked, but it is a slow, deep one, no overnight successes here. Be close to Aries and Libra friends; they might need you.

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Big financial, lifestyle and/ or sexual changes are imminent. They won’t surprise, as life has “telegraphed” them to you for almost two years (and some have already occurred). View these changes as a varying landscape on a road that is primarily successful, creative, loving and fruitful. Still, challenges exist. A new, restrictive note quietly creeps into your earnings outlook for two years, so be conservative in spending. You might invest in your earnings sphere – e.g., buy equipment. Go slow. Investments are both unpredictable and lucky – sex, too! Surprising revelations come here and there!

Aries March 21 - April 19: Major shifts are occurring in your life, in career, status, relationships and in yourself. You’re ready to make a big leap for freedom, yet there’s nowhere to land except in the area of duty, restriction and slow effort. Muffled anger might exist in a relationship. Best approach: use that urge toward freedom to seek philosophical learning or more education, or to expand socially and/or internationally. View all relationships and prospects not as escape, but as ambition’s ground. E.g., form a career partnership. Be prepared to change, go slow and exercise diplomacy. August accents negotiations.

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Big changes occur this summer in three areas of your life: the romantic, creative, pleasure and child-oriented sphere, the social, entertainment and “future dreams” area, and in your earnings/possessions zone. Generally, your social drives, optimism and love of fun will “rule,” whereas money necessities “out-power” your romantic and creative drives. You’re lucky predawn Monday, and you clearly see money/domestic matters late Thursday. You might need to figure out some ethical, friendship or love matter Sunday/ Monday. A month of travel, culture, love and learning lies ahead!

July 25 - 31 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You’re in the power seat, but that doesn’t mean things will be easy. This week and next are the peak of a long change. This change has different levels – some are deep, inner, sexual, psychological, investment-oriented, and can change your whole lifestyle. Other changes occur in career, ambition and prestige dealings. You might break from a former career, association, or direction, and assume a new one. Realize a higher-up might be repressing anger. A potentially very lucky change arrives in your domestic sphere: now, soon, or February to June 2011. Treat aches, pains seriously. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Relationships come front and centre through the weeks ahead.Your sensual side has been very “awake” recently, but now the accent shifts to meaning, love, morals, communication, travel and mental links. You love these things, breezy mental interplay, ideals, meanings. This summer forces you, probably through a relationship, to rediscover and rebuild your morals and ideals, perhaps against a background of secret desires or fears. E.g., an attraction could make you question your loyalty. Or old “fibs” return to play the music you have to face. But this week proves you’re lucky, too! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Lie low, rest Sunday to Tuesday. Your energy surges Wednesday/Thursday. Focus on money, earnings and spending Friday/ Saturday. The weeks ahead emphasize work, health, dependents and machinery. A “prime” change brews in your health, sexual and financial spheres. (Financial: the price of groceries to your paycheque to investments/debt.) The change is deep and seminal – it starts a new future. These areas will definitely impact your plans for your future – and your plans will affect them. Expect luck, struggle, obstacles and opportunity. A relationship grows “talkative.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
