Ridge passes ‘conservative’ budget
Mayor says council decided to “hold the line” this year, resulting in a 5.61-per-cent tax increase. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin was wheeling around town in a wheelchair this week – a resident wanted to take him around to show him the need for sidewalk improvements. It was an “interesting experience” and he could see where a few improvements could be made, but he quickly added, the District of Maple Ridge doesn’t have money to rip up all the sidewalks and replace them. Maple Ridge council passed a “conservative” budget at Tuesday evening’s council meeting, Daykin said, adding “basically, it was hold the line.”
“Within our envelope, we were able to maintain what we were doing,” Daykin said. “What we haven’t done is add a whole bunch of stuff.” The only added item, in addition to inflationary costs and money for an infrastructure reserve fund, was $125,000 for the second phase of planning for the Albion Flats. While Maple Ridge doesn’t have any sinkholes at this time, “there’s so many
pressures and priorities,” Daykin said. The 2011 budget will ensure that everything that needs to get done, will get done, Daykin said. “Folks are used to a certain level (of service).” Maple Ridge council approved a 5.61per-cent tax increase for property owners, citing a need to limit the growth of programs and make sure infrastructure is protected for future generations. The increase will translate to an average

Budget finalization set for new year The 2011 budget for the City of Pitt Meadows is in the final stages of discussion and is expected to be passed early next year. A budget finalization meeting was held by the City of Pitt Meadows on Thursday night, which director of corporate ser-
vices Dean Rear described as a “key discussion time” for councillors to bring forward any issues about the budget. A budget bylaw is expected to be passed at the end of January, or early February 2011.

increase of $124 per household bringing the tax bill to $2,337 – that’s based on an average assessed home value of $383,000. Of the average increase of $124, the District’s operational increase is 1.9 per cent or about $41, whereas water, sewer and recycling fees account for a $50 average increase, $19 will go for a fire service improvement levy, and $14 will be put into infrastructure funding accounts. In a recent report, the Frontier Centre, a conservative think tank, examined local government spending and performance indicators, for example, firefighting budgets, infrastructure construction, transit, and recreational activities. In the Local Government Performance Index, Maple Ridge, along with Port Coquitlam and Kelowna, was cited among the most efficient communities in the country and also among the easiest from which to obtain clear and accurate budget information.

hat are you going to do with those donations? Sonia, one of our Front Line Workers asked. “Send them to the thrift store, we don’t usually have a need for items for babies and children”we told her. “Can I take them; I think I know someone who could use them?”

And that is what started the whole thing! Every time a donation came in, Sonia would collect it, find a place to store it and then start networking with all the people she knew to find young mothers who needed it. The word eventually got around that she was looking for things and sometimes people would bring them because they knew that she was going to find a good use for them. She even had things stored at her home ‘just in case.’ Sadly, just over two weeks ago Sonia Nickle passed away, leaving behind four children and two step children, her youngest a nine year old girl. It was sudden and completely unexpected and her family, friends and co-workers were shocked and grief stricken. Only just recently she celebrated her 50th birthday with friends and family. Sonia, just this past year, also finished a series of courses she took to become a counselor. We were all so proud of her. Sonia was absolutely one of the best Front Line Workers that we’ve ever had. All the staff and clients at The Caring Place miss her very much. As our staff were talking and grieving together some of the girls that helped Sonia with the donations for families wondered what they would do with all of the things she had collected. It was during one of these conversations that Front Line Workers Cheryl, Becky and Susie and Community Advocate Connie, decided to carry on with what Sonia was doing. In Sonia’s memory, they would carry on her work and Becky came up with a great name for it – Sonia’s Cradle. In the January 2011, The Salvation Army Caring Place will be officially launching this program called Sonia’s Cradle. We will be collecting items for babies and children – diapers, formula, good children’s clothing to the age of 10 and baby/toddler equipment. We will then distribute it to families in need who have young babies and children. There are many agencies that help young families and so we will be linking with those agencies to make sure that families who need help the most will be able to receive it. We are currently looking for storage for donations that come in so that they will be easily accessible for staff to distribute. Anyone who can help in that way, please contact Connie McGonigal at 604-463-8296 ext 112.

Homes on 125A Avenue are lit up.
Lighting up town There are a lot of people in town who have the Christmas spirit. And for some of them, that spirit can’t be contained – it spills out all over their house and yard. Such seems to be the case in east Maple Ridge. We’ve been advised that homes at 23025 and 23050 on 125 A Avenue are worth visiting.

“I knew that he was about to drown so I helped him.” It was that selfless yet straightforward attitude that saw seven-yearold Natalie Nakamura risk her wellbeing to save the life of another child this summer at White Pine Beach. On Monday, this Maple Ridge girl was recognized by the Port Moody fire department with a certificate of bravery highlighting her efforts to prevent a three-year-old boy from drowning at the popular Belcarra Lake. “It takes a special person to do something for someone else when it may cost them their life — you did a really good thing that day, and I want to thank you,” said fire chief Jeff Lambert. Natalie’s heroics took place on July 11, as she was building a sandcastle with her five-year-old brother Spencer. They were joined by a three year old, who followed the pair into the water. The three year old, however, quickly found himself in well above his head. “He was too young to swim in that part [of the lake], so he was sinking down,” Natalie recalled. “I saw him sinking down so I put out my arm. He grabbed my arm, I started

of water. In this case if it hadn’t been for the quick response of a little girl, that other little fellow might not be here today.” Natalie’s father Richard said the incident happened too quickly for him to realize its significance at the time. “When she was coming back [from the water], we noticed that she was pulling the boy over and we knew that she was OK because she was standing still,” he said. “If she was going down, then we would have been more concerned.” Aside from the honourary plaque, Natalie received holiday treats, a firefighter’s cap and a firehall tour.

let out around 2 a.m., people are calling for a ride home then, and by that time the wait could be more than an hour for ORN volunteers to get to them. “We want to keep the wait times under 45 minutes,” she said, as “if [callers] wait for more than an hour they seem to find another way home.” That concerns Palm as that other way home could be getting in their own car and driving themselves. She said the best way to deal with this problem would be to call early, before midnight, as then ORN teams can get to people in about 20 or 30 minutes –after 12:30 a.m. the wait times can increase significantly. With more volunteers those times would decrease and Palm explained
that they are currently running with about six or seven teams, but it would be great to have three or four more. Saturday nights are the busiest, with 39 calls to the organization on both Dec. 8 and 10. “Volunteers can come out for one night only,” said Palm, “and most people really enjoy the experience.” Anyone giving their time does get reimbursed for gas as well, based on the mileage and size of the vehicle. Operation Red Nose is still operating Dec. 17, 18 and 31 and volunteers are especially needed for New Year’s Eve. “Come out and have some fun and meet some new people,” said Palm. A homeowner was shot and several items stolen in Stave Falls Tuesday, in what police are calling a targeted home invasion. Five unidentified men broke into a house in the 29900 block of Dewdney Trunk Road in Mission Tuesday, Dec. 14 at around 9 p.m., restraining the man inside. The victim, while shot, sustained non-life threatening injuries, said regional Sgt. Peter RCMP Thiessen spokesman Sgt. Peter Thiessen. Numerous items were stolen from the house, including cash, three guns, and marijuana being grown on the property. The suspects then fled in an unknown vehicle. Police believe this was a targeted attack and that there is no risk to the general public, Thiessen said. Anyone with information about this attack, or relating to suspicious people or vehicles spotted in the area during the evening of Dec. 14, are asked to call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161, or CrimeStoppers at 1-800222-8477.

Man tries luring young girl
Mounties were warning parents and schools of an attempted child abduction Wednesday afternoon. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Police are warning of a possible child abduction in Maple Ridge this week. At approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 15, an 11-year-old girl was walking along Hill Avenue, near 240 Street, when a man asked her to help him find a puppy. The girl continued to walk away from the man, who then got into his pickup truck and called out to her again to help him find the puppy.

Local Mounties have a new, unique member helping fight crime in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Sgt. Good Will was wheeled into the Pitt Meadows council chambers Tuesday night, much to the delight and surprise of mayor and council. Towering a giant moose head above everyone else in the room, Sgt. Good Will was presented as a gift from the Ridge Meadows RCMP to both the District of Maple Ridge and the City of Pitt Meadows. He’ll spend one year posted in Pitt Meadows, before transferring to Maple Ridge next Christmas. Sgt. Good Will is not a human in a mascot costume, but rather a mannequin dressed in a donated constable’s red serge. His moose head was also made and contributed by an officer. Ridge Meadows RCMP

RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh presented a smiling Mayor Don MacLean with Sgt. Good Will and a certificate during Tuesday’s council meeting. Supt. Dave Walsh presented MacLean with the new recruit and a certificate, which stated “Sgt. WILL will stand for hours to take photos with kids, does not call in sick, never ages, never complains, works for no pay, can take hours of abuse while still keeping a smile on his face.” The certificate explained that the sergeant will help both communities behind the scenes by “developing new programs, policy, and supporting front-line policing as we move forward into the future toward an organization of excellence.” Mayor Don MacLean said he appreciates the newest addition, in part because
of its historical significance – Mounties, after all, are such a well-recognized Canadian icon. “I wonder why we didn’t get a superintendent,” MacLean joked. Regardless of Good Will’s rank, the mayor is convinced that people will love having pictures taken with him. “We may just tell Maple Ridge next year to go get their own,” MacLean added, noting the City hall lobby will be the ideal station for Sgt. Good Will. The moose will be presented to Pitt council again during a televised meeting on Jan. 4. The meeting starts at 7 p.m., and airs on Shaw Cable at 10 p.m.

Celebration
Turning 98 is no big deal for war bride
As Maple Ridge resident Milly McConnell prepares to celebrate her 98th birthday, she tells of a life of love and adventure. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Milly McConnell had the kind of whirlwind romance one might see in the movies or read about in books – she met and was engaged to her husband in just two short weeks. It was a time of war, and McConnell didn’t know if she was going to marry the love of her life only to have him die on a battlefield far away. She met her future husband, Canadian soldier Alex McConnell, at her friend’s house in Seaton, England. “I thought he was very handsome and polite,” she said with a smile on her face. However, when he proposed, she didn’t even get an engagement ring. “I thought it wasn’t worth it because we were getting married right away,” she said. Despite their desire to wed, the army insisted they had to know each other for six months, so they waited and were finally married on Sept. 3, 1942. Just a short while later, he was gone. He was fighting overseas for two years and McConnell was terrified he was dead when he went missing for six weeks after he was wounded in Italy. She had a son in 1943 and her new husband only saw him when he was a

When the war ended, her husband returned to Canada first, but McConnell only had three days notice that she could travel there too, and she was five-and-ahalf months pregnant at the time with her daughter Sheena. She moved from the city and a house with electricity and water, to a log cabin
in northern Alberta with no amenities. “I did it all for love and for [my children],” she said. One may think that this might have been a shock for the young mother, but McConnell said she wasn’t bothered as her husband had come back to her alive and well. “We were in love and that covered everything,” she said. “I was so happy,
it didn’t bother me to be without water or lights, but I didn’t like the toilets,” she added, grimacing at the thought of the outdoor toilet across the yard. She was married to Alex for 53 years, but sadly lost him about 15 years ago. Not a day goes by when she doesn’t think about him. But McConnell is not one to dwell in the past and with her nails painted a bright red, her hair done, and her eyes bright, she does not look like she is about to celebrate a birthday that is just two years shy of the 100-year milestone. She lost her son about 24 years ago, but she still has Sheena and her son-in-law Dale Sharpe, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandsons. McConnell has been a resident of Maple Ridge since her husband died and likes the community. “The people are very friendly I find,” she said, and she especially likes the seniors centre and the writing workshop they hold on the first Friday of every month. She doesn’t know the secret to why she has lived this long. She thinks the Canadian air, walking everyday, and not drinking or smoking must have helped. “When I was younger I used to smoke but I never inhaled,” she said. “It was just fashionable to smoke.” On Saturday, McConnell will be surrounded by her family and friends as they celebrate her 98th birthday. She is looking forward to it and to turning 100 when she will get a letter from the Queen. What advice does she have for young people now? “I think I would advise people to enjoy everyday that comes and be happy.”

The Christmas CounterAttack program, which started Dec. 3, has netted two immediate roadside prohibitions thus far. That means two drivers have had their licence prohibited for 90 days, and their vehicles impounded for 30 days. Police have also issued four violation tickets and suspended a new driver’s licence for 12 hours due to the presence of alcohol in their body. The road blocks also resulted in some unexpected criminal charges, including possession of a prohibited weapon, and two cases of illegal drug possession. “Our CounterAttack road checks will continue up to, and including, New Year’s Eve,” said traffic Cpl. Dale Somerville. “Drinking and driving is a very preventable crime, which starts with a first drink. Far too many innocent persons have been killed or seriously injured as a result of alcohol related crashes. Our goal is to reduce the number of these crashes, making our roads safer for all to use,” he said, suggesting Operation Red Nose as an alterniative (1-877-604-NOSE).

Changes in election wind
Creative
As the BC Liberal Party race to replace Premier Gordon Campbell heats up, some interesting proposals are arising that could affect all electors of all political stripes throughout B.C. Candidate Christy Clark, for instance, has hinted that, if she is successful, she might move the province quickly into general election mode, arguing that voters should be allowed to elect their premier, rather than having one chosen only by party members. She may have a point, since she’s not even a sitting MLA right now. But her argument speaks against the tradition of politics in this country. The more usual route to follow would be to ask a sitting BC Liberal in a safe riding to step aside for her. Opposition parties traditionally have respected such a move, and contest the seat less vigorously than in a by-election or general election. Perhaps, with the resignation of BC NDP leader Carole James, Clark’s motives are actually more reminiscent of W.A.C. Bennett’s decimation of his right-wing opposition by calling an election while they were leaderless and in disarray, 60 years ago. He parlayed his advantage into decades of Social Credit rule. It took the BC Liberals 40 years to recover from Bennett’s gambit, and the BC Conservatives have yet to find a path out of the political fringe. Clark may be thinking she can similarly pull a fast one on today’s NDP. Either way, it would put paid to B.C.’s fixed-election-date legislation – not a terrific legal hurdle, as demonstrated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who instituted similar legislation and promptly ignored it. But unlike the federal case, B.C. held to its legislation through at least one election, and the change could result in voter backlash against Clark. Meanwhile, candidate Mike de Jong has proposed, with candidate George Abbott’s support, looking into lowering the voting age in B.C. to 16. While some argue that it would bring fresh blood into the election process, others wonder how the impetuosity of youth might affect valid decision-making. Who knows what other revolutionary concepts may emerge as the New Democrats start gearing up their drive to pick a new leader in the wake of James’s resignation? – B.G.

I just wanted to mention to you the inquiry my family made to the North Pole at the north end of 224th St. The owner apparently wants to do away with the commercialism of Christmas... well unfortunately the pricing of this little experience tells me that he has to be the biggest commercialismist (I know it isn’t a proper word but it fits) going. Do you know for a six-year-old child to experience this non-commercialism Christmas, it cost $75? It cost $25 to get in, and you can build a toy in the toy shop... but if you want to keep it, it cost another $15 – what kid wouldn’t want to keep a toy that he/she makes?
They can have a visit with Santa, but you bring your own gift for the child. Then it costs you $5 for him to give it to the child, and a picture with Santa is another $15. After that you can receive a call from Santa, and that costs $12.50...WOW! There’s the spirit of Christmas, one of which I will never want to experience, I feel his non-commercialism was misrepresented on the front page of your newspaper. There is a cost for every step you take at the North Pole, BC, and unfortunately my granddaughter cannot experience this due to its commercialism. Truly disappointed.

Provincial politics
Rush on to privatize Dear editor,
It is becoming increasingly clear that the price the BC Liberals paid for Gordon Campbell to step down peacefully was that they had to give him the fast-track green light to complete his privatization agenda. Last week, I was asked to partake in a phone survey that came down to the question “would you be very upset if ICBC was shut down?” Drive down the street and see the private liquor stores sporting signs that declare that all liquor prices are below government liquor store prices. Then, you can’t miss the mad scramble to finish off the privatization of BC Hydro with 55 per cent price increases in the wind, and the major restructuring from the B.C. forest service, which will be morphed into the new ministry of natural resource operations that will undoubtedly leave BC Hydro nothing more than an empty shell at best. A few individual MLA members with eyes on the premiership are distancing themselves from these actions, this is for deniability purposes I suppose, from any public backlash from the electorate over these actions. Here the Liberals are letting a man, which 91 per cent of voters want des-
perately to get rid of, continue to dictate B.C.’s policy and direction for the next couple decades at least, in spite of our total rejection of his manner of governing and more importantly his policies. So far, this privatization has done is to get rid of a lot of decent paying jobs and turn them into Mac jobs, and increased the costs of all the privatized services to boot. Not only have these policies seriously lowered wages, but they have even meant sending jobs out of the province as well. You might want to compare the wages made by government liquor stores with private liquor stores, and if you think it will bring down prices, think again. Every one of these privatizations has resulted in increased costs from hospital laundry to BC Ferries, all have resulted in cost increases to you and me. The BC Liberals just don’t get it and obviously have not learned their lesson. The people of B.C. have told them in no uncertain terms that they want the government to have a discussion and mandate to enact change and here they are pulling the very same stunt that got them in trouble in the first place once again. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

TURNING IDEAS INTO ACTION
Memories of Christmas past?
Response to the West Coast Express Santa Train was overwhelming during the first weekend, including the one-day only festival at Waterfront Station where people had their pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
West Coast Express
Santa train rolls again Response to last weekend’s run helped generate more than 1,900 toys and $500 in donations. Once again on Saturday, local residents can jump aboard the West Coast Express and forego paying their normal fares, provided they bring along a new, un-used toy for the Christmas hamper societies along the north side of the Fraser River. This train first ran last Saturday, Dec. 11, and will run again Dec. 18.
But this is no ordinary train. The Santa Train is a special annual toy drive that – for the 14th year – makes the scenic 65-kilometre journey from Mission, stopping at WCE stations along the way, to Vancouver’s Waterfront Station. Organizers described the response from riders last weekend as “amazing,” noting that 1,900 toys and more than $500 in cash donations were collected. There’s still time to ride the festive train and to give, but organizers noted that donations of canned food – while appreciated – do not earn people a free ride.
Create memories, not garbage. Give gifts that last or share an experience.

Teens bag clothes for charity The Christmas hamper society will receive a boost thanks to efforts of Thomas Haney students. There were 200 bags of gently used clothing, towels, bedding, and other household items piled up in the “great hall” of Thomas Haney Secondary on Wednesday morning. The school’s Eco Action Club and their teacher-sponsors, Pam Danz and Carla van der Pauw were waiting for the Developmental Disabilities Association to show up and collect the bags – at $3 apiece, the students were going to get $600 to give to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society. The clothing drive ran from Nov. 15 to Dec. 15, and the Eco Action team collected items from all students. The club’s goal is to raise awareness among the student population about reducing clothing consumption and recycling used clothing.

boys enjoy knitting “immensely,” she said. The Grade 7 students have taken a leadership role this year and are teaching the Grade 6s how to knit. Massey herself didn’t know how to knit last year and had to ask her mother to teach her, which has led to more people from the community helping out. The yarn and needles have been largely donated by parents and the Caring Place’s Once Upon a Sheep. The Christmas tree that greets students, staff and visitors in the main lobby of the school is decorated with hats, socks, scarves and other soft gift items. This year the school decided to ask the community to donate hats and scarves and other warm clothing items in addition to the ones being knit by students. These have been hung on the tree awaiting delivery to the needy – when the students have completed their knitting projects, the items will be donated to the homeless through the Caring Place.

Knitting at Edith McDermott has become a cross-generational activity with older kids helping younger ones and parents and grandparents lending their expertise to teach students how to create clothing from yarn. What began as a group of Grade 6 students knitting hats and scarves for the homeless last year has spread to four classes and hopefully soon a knitting club in the school. “They’ve loved it,” said Grade 6 teacher Julia Massey. “It surprised even me.” Knitting is a great activity to get students focused and it seems to calm them down, Massey said. And it seems to have contradicted stereotyping as lots of the

When they’re not busy tracking down criminals and making the community safe, the Ridge Meadows RCMP take a little time out to belt out a few Christmas tunes to get seniors into a holiday mood. On Tuesday afternoon, about 15 officers were at the Maple Ridge Seniors Centre on 119th Avenue singing Christmas carols, accompanied by several guitars and led by Supt. Dave Walsh. It was the fourth performance for the
choir this year, including a performance with Showstoppers Academy at the Pitt Meadows Christmas in the City event. They are scheduled to perform three more times – at Willow Manor, Holyrood Manor and Baillie House. The RCMP choir has been performing for more than 10 years around Christmas time. An RCMP spokesperson said the detachment likes to reach out to the community around this time of the year and visit with elderly people who might not get many visitors. He added the officers usually mingle with the seniors after and are always well received.

Gardeners offers organic course
by Teija Beck
editorial@mrtimes.com
Organic gardening is increasingly popular in the community. And for those interested in learning more about it, SOUL Ridge Meadows is offering the Organic Master Gardener course and a four-session workshop series in the new year. SOUL, the Society for Organic Urban Land Care, is a group dedicated to educating the public about organic gardening. It was originally started in Victoria, and in January 2010, a Ridge Meadows chapter of the group started up at the urging of Melissa Duehmig. “At SOUL, part of our mission is to educate our communities on organic land care practices,” said Duehmig, chair of the local chapter. “A lot of people in our group and in the area have an interest in growing vegetables in their yards, kind of a local food thing.” The Organic Master
Gardener course is taught by Gail Szostek of Green Space Consulting, and is an eight-week intensive course that teaches growers how to create a successful urban garden without the use of chemicals. “I took the course and it was absolutely amazing,” Duehmig said. “There’s really good soil knowledge there, so you can understand all the organisms in the soil and how nutrients and water and everything work.” She noted that those taking the course get a yearlong SOUL membership. New next year is a workshop series developed by
gardening expert Carol McIntyre called Full Circle: How to Grow WinterHarvest Vegetables, which offers four sessions throughout 2011. The course focuses on growing vegetables yearround, taking participants through the steps of getting seeds, preparing the garden, planting, harvesting, and protecting plants through winter. The first Full Circle workshop, titled Starting With Seeds, is set for Jan. 15, and registration for this session closes Monday, Dec. 20. Sessions are $50 and will be held at the CEED

Melissa Duehmig is chair of the SOUL Ridge Meadows organization offering organic gardening workshops in the new year.
Centre, 11739 223rd St. “We have to be a steward of the land,” Duehmig said. “You’ve got to take care of [the earth] and it will take care of you, and the only way to do that is without chemicals. It’s natural – it’s the only way to do it.” A group of between 20 and 30 SOUL members meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month (except December). More information about SOUL, the Organic Master Gardener course, and the Full Circle workshops, folks can visit the CEED Centre website at www. fraserinfo.org.

Getting creative with Lego
Eight-year-old Brayden Lawrance posed with his Lego creation at the Maple Ridge public library. The event encouraged children from Grades 2 to 6 to build – out of Lego – a scene or a character from a book.
Community
Profile at events upgraded The volunteer centre can promote itself better thanks to a generous grant from a community foundation. Volunteer Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows received a $1,600 grant from the Maple Ridge Community Foundation that will help the centre promote services. “A big part of [our organization] is recruitment of volunteers and the recognition and celebration of volunteers,” said Vicki Kipps, executive director of Volunteer Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows.
“The money will go directly to purchase tents and promotional materials so we can be at festivals and community events,” Kipps said. The ability for the centre to be at these events in a professional way would not be possible without this grant money, she added. To find out more information about the volunteer centre, people can contact the community volunteer coordinator at 604-467-6911 extension 230 or online at www.comservice.bc.ca or find volunteer opportunities by going to www.myvolunteerpage.com.

Ginger (right), a Labrador cross, came into the Maple Ridge SPCA because her family split up. She is an athletic dog looking for a new family. She’s an example of just one animal in need of help this holiday season, explained local shelter manager Mark Vosper (above).

Tuffie has FeLV and won’t live as long as non-FeLV cats but he has quality time ahead of him to enjoy, and a lot to offer in a home where he could be indoor-only, and a single cat or live with other FeLV cats. He’s survived all the storms in his life with grace and courage. Tuffie is bright, gentle, and eager to rest his head on a soft loving lap.

Samuel has FeLV and will need an indoor-only home where he will be the only cat or live with other FeLV + cats. He is in good health but has old injuries that suggest he has been hit by a car. He has the appearance and bearing of a king among cats. Yet he is mellow and loving, wanting only a small space in someone’s home to call his own.

Juice has FeLV and will need an indoor-only home where he will be the only cat or live with other FeLV+ cats. He was living in an industrial area when he was rescued. He is clean, uses his box, loves to play and cuddle. Clearly he had a family before but somehow lost everything and ended up alone on the streets. Please help him find what he has lost.
Tom has FeLV and will need an
indoor-only home where he will be the only cat or live with other FeLV+ cats. He was found homeless with a collar he’d outgrown cutting into his skin. Tom is calm and serene. He likes to spend most of his time in meditation & his face is relaxed and untroubled. Tom can bring this peace with him to any home that gives him a chance.

Show features blind artist
Christmas Show with works from local artists will run until Dec. 23.
Robert Hebert remembers what the Golden Ears Mountains looked like – but having lost the little vision he had about 10 years ago, he has to rely on his memory when creating pieces of art. Hebert is one of the artists featured at New Creations Gallery’s Christmas show. He has been creating landscape paintings guided by local artist Jack Prasad. At an art show, Prasad heard Hebert and his wife discussing a painting. His wife had described it to him, and when they were talking about it Prasad didn’t realized Hebert couldn’t actually see the piece. That led to an artistic collaboration between the two men whereby Hebert cuts out shapes, for example, of mountains, and Prasad helps him place them. He then tells Prasad what colours and shades he’d like to use and Prasad guides him while he paints. Hebert can create art with “impressionistic vague shapes,” but finds

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Cancer June 21-July 22: Avoid all new starts, especially in work and health zones. An ongoing “condition” in one of these might reach a climax Monday/Tuesday – after this, the atmosphere changes: fresh horizons, fresh new people and opportunities (and challenges and competitors) arrive. Still, start nothing new yourself, before Dec. 30. Lie low, rest, contemplate and be charitable Sunday/Monday. (Being charitable when you’re “down” ensures a turn of luck later.) Practise safety. Your energy surges back midweek – Wednesday holds a lucky surprise, wise love! Chase money Thursday/Friday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Start nothing new before Dec. 30, especially in real estate, domestic, childoriented and security arenas. A former opportunity might return in one of these zones now or next week. Your career, duties owed to higher-ups, and your reputation demand attention Sunday/Monday – erratic relationships might threaten your progress or bring a climax. Tuesday begins a month of romance, creative successes and speculative “wins!” Optimism, social delights fill Tuesday/Wednesday: welcome a fine relationship Wednesday. Retreat Thursday/Friday. Your charisma attracts “deep stuff” Saturday.

Aries March 21 - April 19: New projects and relationships will tend to go in circles – forever. So stay with the ongoing, finish up things that have sucked your energy for too long. Something from the past – a foreign contact, a legal, cultural or educational matter, a travel opportunity, perhaps a loved one, a wedding or divorce plan – returns now. You might as well tackle this, or more importantly, tackle the flaw that is preventing it from working. Intimacy, sex, investment and finances are mildly blessed all month: you could gain from another’s assets. Bosses, VIPs start to examine your performance. Taurus April 20-May 20: Don’t start new relationships or projects before Dec. 30. Stick with the ongoing, or reprise past involvements and opportunities. Chase money Sunday/Monday, but DON’T buy important items, especially televisions, computers, etc. A former financial opportunity might reappear, but its initial flaw has not disappeared, so stay out. Love exists, your spouse shows affection, others treat you well. Be wary of legal hassles and international travel: avoid them all month. Paperwork, talk and errands are lucky Wednesday. Settle down Thursday/Friday. Romance, beauty, pleasure come Saturday! Gemini May 21-June 20: Start nothing new, especially in contracts, agreements, marriage, partnerships, relocation, andpublicdealings.Something or someone from the past might appear in these zones: it’s probably more trouble than good. You might grow indecisive about a link. If you look deeply, you’ll see that your indecision is justified. Promise nothing, sign nothing. A month of mystery begins. Your energy perks up Sunday/Monday. Money and possessions meet barriers Tuesday, good luck Wednesday. Travel, communications go well Thursday/Friday. Home, family, security bless you Saturday.

Dreaming of a New Home?
604-630-3300 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Don’t start new projects or relationships before Dec. 30. You might hear/ read a significant message Sunday. Gentle love and understanding fill Sunday/Monday – but Monday holds a couple of surprises, or stress that could affect your health briefly. This stress/health link has been around for seven years. It will end by March 2011. Gastro-intestinal irritations will ebb. The last year’s quiet cloud over your career will also end by March. A “domestic month” begins Tuesday. Your career/job meets luck Wednesday. Optimism, happiness visit Thursday/Friday! Retreat Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Avoid new starts before Dec. 30. Mysteries arise Sunday/Monday – good mysteries Sunday, leading to rewarding research, or sharing of intimacies, secrets. But take care Monday: don’t invest, borrow, or risk a romantic situation by being too “investigative.” Tuesday begins a month of details, errands, communications, paperwork and travel – be alert in all these, as mistakes are rife until late December. Wisdom, gentle love flow midweek, but are only lucky Wednesday, not Tuesday. Ambition, Thursday/Friday. Happiness, optimism, social joys arrive Saturday! A new life looms! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your energy remains high, but shy away from big new starts before Dec. 30. You’ll be indecisive until then. A voice from the past might speak Sunday/Monday, or you can be reminded of old relationships, perhaps of old ambitions this week and next. Tuesday begins a month of money, possessions, memory and sensuality. Midweek brings mysteries, subconscious urgings, changes, investments, large finances and intimate bonds. These are lucky Wednesday, not Tuesday. Wisdom, understanding, gentle love and international themes bless you Thursday/Friday. Your prestige rises Saturday.

Dec. 19 - Dec. 25 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing before Dec. 30. Nostalgia about a more secure time fills this week and next – or you face unfinished obligations, probably involving the government, institutions or disadvantaged people. You could find “lost” receipts, documents that will prove valuable in future – save them. Chores and health issues fill Sunday (good) and Monday (difficult). Relationships irk you Tuesday, but flow with pleasant, happy luck Wednesday. Your energy and charisma surge upward now through January! Life’s depths “surface” Thursday/Friday: research, don’t commit. Gentle love Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Avoid big new projects or relationships before Dec. 30. A former “light lover” or happy friend might return now to late month. Sunday/Monday are romantic, creative and pleasurefilled, but right after this you begin a month of quietude, moderate withdrawal, lowered energy and charisma. (Even Monday, though romantic, hits the turbulence of a “phase end.”) Tackle chores Tuesday (cautiously) and Wednesday (success, even money luck). Relationships confront you Thursday/Friday: all’s well, even a bit romantic. Pursue a mystery Saturday – a “gift” has good future implications. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Don’t start anything new before Dec. 30. A month of pressures and hard work ends Tuesday; four weeks of social delights, optimism, flirtations and happiness begin! But an incomplete career project overhangs this week and next – as long as it’s nothing new, try to finish it up now. Or, a former career role or employment opportunity might return, especially Thursday/Friday: sure, take it. Earlier, rest up, be domestic, Sunday/ Monday. Romance, creativity and pleasure meet barriers Tuesday, success and luck Wednesday. Exciting meetings portend future joys Saturday! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Mackenzie Skapski survived a horrific bus crash a year ago, only to come back and be selected to play in the U17 World Championships. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Goaltender for the Ridge Meadows Flames, Mackenzie Skapski, had to have reconstructive facial surgery after a horrific bus crash in December 2009, when he was travelling with the Fraser Valley Bruins just outside Williams Lake. The bus slid across the highway and backwards into a ditch and Skapski, then 15, was the only member of “It’s still kind of surreal, knowthe team that was ing that you’re going to put on a badly injured. From there he was part of a group that was whittled down to just 21
players before the announcement of who made the team came on Nov. 15. He is now a draft pick for the Western Hockey League’s Kootney Ice and hopes to make their line-up next season. He is determined to further his hockey career. “You can’t ask much more out of a 16-yearold,” said Eaton. “He never gives up, he always works his hardest and works to be better.” Skapski does have his sights
on the big leagues one day. “A lot of guys see a lot of things for him,” said Eaton, “I don’t see why he can’t make the jump to the big leagues one day.” The young goaltender knows that just when the bus crashed, life can change in a heartbeat, but true to form, he is staying positive. “Obviously it’s something you dream about as a little kid,” he said, “strive towards it every day and hopefully it works out.”

Ramblers are sizing up the competition Maple Ridge Secondary senior girls basketball team are hoping for a spot in the B.C. Championships in 2011. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The pressure is on for the Maple Ridge Ramblers, the senior girls basketball team from MRSS, as coach Don Herman’s teams
have been to the B.C. Championships 12 times out of the last 15 years. The team is 11-2 so far this year and are currently ranked 12th provincially in the AAA division. “Unfortunately in our league we’re 0-1,” said Herman as the girls lost to Gleneagle on Tuesday night. They won their Wednesday night game against Yale in Abbotsford, and Herman said his team managed to keep Yale on the perimeter and they did a good job
cleaning up the boards. Kolbie Orum, Grade 10, had 12 rebounds and 18 points. Jackie Racette, Grade 12, had 6 rebounds and 12 points. “We’ve been making lots of progress,” said Herman, who cites his team’s size as one of its biggest assets. Orum is not only the team’s top scorer but she is also the biggest player, at 6 ft 3 in. The team also has four more girls who are around six feet tall.

Herman said that his team did not have enough rest time as they only had an hour and a half and the press from South Kamloops was too much for the girls. After a night of sleep, they were matched up against Oak Bay – the runner-up in last year’s provincial championship. Herman said the team learned from their mistakes against South Kamloops and managed to defeat Oak Bay 49-43. In their final game of the tournament they beat the Bev Facey Falcons from Edmonton, 55-39. “It’s a lot of fun,” Herman said about his basketball team this year. “The girls work hard and they do their best.”

Naturally due to their height, the team is good at catching rebounds, and Herman said they need to play that up. He said they still need to work on “passing, and ball handling in general,” and handling full court pressure. “We want to be the hardest working team on the court,” said Herman, adding that they will be focusing on executing their press breaks and adding some zone defences. “We want to finish in the top two in the league,” he said, “and to qualify for the Fraser Valley Championships and the B.C. Championships.” Herman said that season highlights to this point were winning the 20th annual Kiwanis tournament, where Orum was tournament MVP, Racette was top offen-

Record number of coats collected
The annual GVHBA Coats for Kids campaign collected winter clothing for those in need. by Teija Beck
editorial@mrtimes.com
Residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have outdone themselves this year with donations to the 15th annual Coats for Kids campaign. Coats for Kids, organized by the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association, collects winter clothing for needy children, teens and adults across the Lower Mainland. Rob Grimm, of Portrait Homes, has helped run Coats for Kids in Maple Ridge since its inception, said the response this year has been “phenomenal.”
“The spirit of the season was definitely alive in the hearts of those generous people,” said Peter Simpson, GVHBA president and CEO. Donations were collected “This year was at 34 drop-off by far the largest locations in 13 municipalities amount [of between Nov. coats] we have 15 and 30. This year’s ever received.” drop-off spot Rob Grimm in Maple Ridge was on 232nd Street, which Grimm said may have contributed to the large amount of donations. He said the 2010 address was easier for people to find than last year’s location on Forman Street.
Development rates change, given cap
Pitt Meadows council put a cap on planning and development fees Tuesday. Current fees for Pitt Meadows are some of the lowest out of the surrounding municipalities, said Kim Grout, director of operations. The City will go from a flat-rate fee to a variable-rate structure, and it was decided Tuesday that there will now be a fee cap of $8,000 for rezoning and development permit applications and $10,000 for custom comprehensive zone applications. This means that there will be a base rate, and developers may pay extra depending on the project – but no higher than the caps. Grout said this will keep Pitt Meadows competitive with its regional competitors, such as Coquitlam, Langley, Surrey, and Richmond, noting that it is possible that these fee increases could be offset by possible future development incentives.

“This year was by far the largest amount [of coats] we have ever received,” Grimm said. “We had people bringing in bags and bags of coats, hats and scarves.” Grimm estimated that between 65 and 75 coats were donated in Maple Ridge. Meanwhile, across the Lower Mainland more than 4,000 winter coats, sweaters, scarves, and mitts were collected. The items gathered are then distributed by the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau.
