Sitting in her room in Baillie House, surrounded by Christmas cards and decorations, Mary Lee Toews speaks warmly about her

memories of Christmas 1949. She has lived in Maple Ridge for the past 13 years, having moved here to “follow the children.” But Toews spent most of her life living in Arrow Park, which is in south central British Columbia. Toews is a frequent contributor to the Baillie House newsletter, submitting poems and stories to entertain her fellow residents. She now spends her Christmases visiting

with friends and family at Baillie House. “I just stay here and hope and pray that lots of people come in to see me,” she said, laughing. “My kids come whenever they can, and grandkids.” Toews’ room features a small artificial Christmas tree with bright, multi-coloured lights, but 61 years ago in Arrow Park, she remembers having a very different and special Christmas tree.

Arrow Park Christmas 1949: Memories of a pristine six-foot spruce I had been begging my mother to let me get the tree this year. It was not very cold out, but there was about four feet of snow. I received the standard answer: “You’ll have to ask your daddy.” My father was a gruff soul, and I didn’t want to ask him, but I really wanted to get the tree, so I did. Wonder of wonders, he said “yes, as long as you don’t go too far and get yourself lost.” He even said I could take my girlfriend along and told us which tools we could take.

Arrow Park is a beautiful valley in the west Kootenays with majestic saddle mountains to the north, Mount Scalping Knife to the east, Mount Ingersal to the west, and the Valhallas to the south. Pines, spruces, cedars, and firs were the trees which I loved. This was my hometown. It was small, with maybe 200 people. They were friendly souls for the most part, and every one of us knew entirely too much about everyone else. But that’s how small towns are.

I also know that if we’d gotten stranded and had to leave the tree and tools behind, they would still be there when we got back. But no need for adults. My friend and I, both 10 years old, waded hip-deep through the snow, straight to the perfect tree. Very easy: I’d had it picked out since July. Then began the hard part. “You hold the branches and I’ll chop,” said my friend. That lasted about three minutes, whereupon we traded places. Then

I still think of it and its heavenly aroma as Christmas rolls around once more. But this year? I’m so thankful to head for the closet and get my artificial fir, and stay out of four-foot snow banks. Gift wrapping initiatives at Valley Fair and Haney Place malls are saving shoppers time while raising money for two local causes. At Haney Place Mall, the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society is raising money for its pallative and grief support programs with the help of volunteers, who wrap shoppers’ Christmas gifts in festive paper and ribbons for a donation. “I would like to see us make $500,” said Kristina Murray, fundraising and special events coordinator for the RMHS. “It’s hard [to estimate] because we haven’t done this before.” Murray said the money would support bereavement programs, both for groups and one-on-one, as well as the training of volunteers. Heading into the final week, she was optimistic about response thus far. “[It’s been] pretty good, actually,” Murray said. “Saturday was very busy. Sunday and Monday were surprisingly a

little quiet, but we expect the rest of the week to pick up.” Over at Valley Fair Mall, the Valley Fair walking group is running a similar gift-wrapping operation called Christmas Wrap, with the money raised going to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation of British Columbia and the Yukon. “We like to provide a service for a donation, that’s why we’re wrapping gifts,” said Judy Vermette, a member of the walking group who has been involved in Christmas Wrap for the past three years. More than $1,000 was raised last year, and Vermette hopes to do about the same this year. But she said business has been slow so far. “I think it [will pick up], probably by Wednesday,” she said. “Wednesday, Thursday, Friday is the busiest time.” Vermette said a minimum donation of $2 is suggested, but people often give more – especially for more difficult-towrap gifts. The Valley Fair walking group has provided this service for the past six years, according to Vermette. Both groups will still be helping out last-minute shoppers and wrapping today, Christmas Eve. The Valley Fair wrappers are open until around 4 p.m. and the Haney Place group is going until 1 p.m.

The holidays can be a stressful time for everyone, and staff at PMSS want all students to know that help is available if they need it. Principal Dennis Dickson said the death of the Pitt Meadows youth last weekend ripped through the school, since the young man was an ex-student. Dickson, along with school counsellors, and district principal of student support services Laurie Smith, decided to post a message to let students know

that just because it is the holidays does not mean they are alone. The school has a crisis intervention team available for students. But since many are away over Christmas, Dickson felt posting a note on the school’s website was a way to get the message out. “I don’t know that youth would come to our website,” said Dickson. “They’d likely go to Facebook, but we try to keep [our site] as interactive as possible.” “It affects the community when these events happen,” the principal noted. The message on the website reads: “If any student, or their family, is experiencing emotional crisis at this time of year support is available.” People can call Siobahn Avery or an intake worker at child and youth mental health at 604-466-7300, or request a referral from a doctor to Youth Crisis Response Team at 604-469-3232.

Christmas brings surprise

Sgt. Kathy Dickson was working on Christmas Day when three kids gave the Mounties a gift they won’t forget. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

It was almost seven years ago, but RCMP Sgt. Kathy Dickson has not forgotten the kindness of one family who paid a special visit to the local detachment Christmas morning. “It’s just one of those stories that has just stuck,” she said. Dickson was working as a watch commander on Christmas morning, when she was called to the front at around 9 a.m. She said a mother and three young children were standing there carrying something that smelled delicious. It turned out the children, aged about three, five and seven at the time, had been in church on Christmas Eve and

their priest asked for everyone to remember those who had to work on Christmas to help keep the community safe. The oldest child reminded the rest of the family of this message on Christmas morning. She asked mom if she could make something just for the police so they could take it to them that morning. The mother made a cranberry cobbler, which not only fed the police officers, but gave them a treat they still have not forgot, said Dickson. The kids were so eager to deliver the food to the police station, they had not even touched their Christmas gifts. “The fact that they hadn’t opened their presents yet I thought was so cool,” Dickson said. She does not know the name of the family and has not seen them since. The next year, Dickson even brought some presents for the children, but never got the chance to give them. Still their small gift gave Dickson a Christmas day she’ll always remember.

Haven coming up short of cash

While preparations for the 11th annual Christmas Haven dinner are in full swing, organizers are coming up short on cash. The non-denominational event is planned for today (Friday, Dec. 24), 6 to 9 p.m. at the Maple Ridge Baptist Church, and visitors can look forward to a turkey dinner, presents, entertainment, and even a visit from Santa Claus. But while in previous years organizers have received numerous cash donations, this year they have collected only about 40 per cent of what is needed for expens-

es, said Kathy Quayle, chair of the event. “We’ve noticed a decline in donations this year and we’re getting worried, knowing we may have an increase in attendance,” she said. “We need cash more than anything.” On a more positive note, Quayle noted that many people have donated gifts in the last few days. The money collected goes toward paying for expenses such as catering the meal and insurance. “It’s a great event,” Quayle said. “We’ve got a lot of stuff planned... we have a nice little kids area and facepainting and balloons, and all that stuff. Just to see the kids’ faces when Santa comes in, it’s fabulous.” “We hope people will consider donating, bearing in mind that even a loonie or a toonie is helpful,” said Quayle. When the holidays are over and it’s time for the tree to go, the Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue team will be holding its annual tree chip-up, with all proceeds going toward the growing team. Drop by Jan. 8, 9, 15 or 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to get rid of a Christmas tree in an environmentally friendly way. The service is provided by donation, with all proceeds going to benefit the search and rescue team. “We’ve had everything from a handful of change to 20 and 50 dollar bills,” said Rick Laing, a longtime member and head of the rescue team. “It helps with training and equipment replacement, which are the big things we need to fundraise for.” The search and rescue team currently has 20 active members and has recently taken on 7 new trainees. Laing said they may likely take on another

Last year, close to $5,000 was raised, according to Laing. “It’s the fundraiser every-

body looks forward to,” Laing said. Trees will be chipped in the same location as last year, at the search and rescue building located at 23598 105th Ave. in Maple Ridge. For a minimum $10 donation, tree pick-up service by the First Haney Rovers scout troop is available. Christmas Greetings from Mayor Don MacLean Christmas is a great time to enjoy friends and family and reﬂect on the past and the coming year. In Pitt Meadows, we have enjoyed a year of community pride, beginning with our celebration at Spirit Square welcoming the Olympic Torch to our community. It was a cold, early morning, but thousands of residents dressed in red and white and joined together to cheer as the torch arrived. It was a great way to kick off 2010! Since then, we have also enjoyed many other moving moments, from the 72nd Annual Pitt Meadows Day to our second Christmas in the City at Spirit Square, as well as new events such as our Earth Day celebration, Bard on the Bricks, the Farmer’s Market, and so much more. There is much to look forward to in 2011 as well. Construction on the new Pitt Meadows Library is underway at the corner of Harris and Ford Roads, and it will be opening next year.The South Bonson Community Centre will also be complete in 2011, and the Pitt Meadows Arena is undergoing renovations, to be complete this spring.These spaces will offer us bigger and better places to gather and participate in sports and activities for years to come. Buildings may give a city shape, but people give it life. Pitt Meadows homes are lit up for the season, and families are out enjoying the mild winter weather that we’re having so far. I want to thank my Council colleagues, staff, our partners, our businesses and our residents for giving our city a vibrancy and spirit not found anywhere else. Christmas for everyone

It’s Christmas. This is a time of year that breaks down some of the religious barriers that divide people. Much as some folks – unfortunately, many of them in positions of authority – will try to deny it, Christmas is a celebration that has transcended its specific religiosity. Christmas is now celebrated – or at least recognized – by people of nearly every faith (or no faith at all). No, they don’t all recognize December 25 as the birth date of Jesus Christ, the central figure in Christian beliefs. Indeed, even most Christians themselves don’t take the date literally, but as an arbitrary acknowledgement that their “saviour” was born into the world to exert his positive influence on individuals, societies, and the world as a whole. Many people of most other faiths throughout the world have come to accept and embrace the “Christmas season” as a time of sharing and giving, a time to consider the importance of friends and family and neighbours, a time to make an active effort towards bettering the lot of acquaintances and strangers alike – a time to let sink in the realization that “we’re all in this together, after all.” All of those aims, indeed, conform to the basic tenets of all of the world’s great religions. The bottom line is that, except for a few miscreants – some of whom, unfortunately, rise to positions of power – everybody really wants the world to be a better place for everybody. Christmas is a time that tends to supersede the greed that is promulgated through our corporate, commercial society. And while concerns of commercialism destroying the basic goodness embodied in the season are valid at their root, we need only take a look around us, at all the good and selfless things that people do for each other, especially at this time of year, to see that Christmas has a power to break through shallow day-to-day existence, and helps us to make us all better than we believed we could be. And whatever your religion, if any, that is certainly worth celebrating. Merry Christmas! – B.G.

Coach of the Year: Greg Walsh of Peterborough, Ont., coach of the minor league NAPA Auto Parts hockey team. After an opposing team member shouted a racial slur at 16-year-old Andrew Lyn McCullum, Walsh pulled his team off the ice and was subsequently Cockburn suspended until April, 2011. On Straight Monday, Dec. 21, after countrywide outrage, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association reinstated Walsh. McCallum, who evidently had been called the N-word more than once while on the ice, stated he is lucky to have a coach like Walsh. So are we all. Best Premier B.C.’s Not Going to Get: Carole Taylor, presently chancellor of Simon Fraser University and former B.C. finance minister in then-Premier Gordon Campbell’s Liberal government. Urged to run for the leadership of the Liberals, she has stated publicly that she has no interest in returning to politics. She may have been soured by the manner in which Premier Gordon Campbell treated his few women cabinet ministers. Best Good Riddance Resignation: Gordon Campbell, no question. This arrogant man dumped the HST on B.C. with no consultation and was amazed at the negative reaction. He ruled, a la Stephen Harper, by the Divine Right of I’m Right and You’re Not. Worst of all, this was a conservative politician who took over the BC Liberal party and turned it into his own fiefdom. Best We Wish You’d Stay Resignation: Danny Williams soon to be ex-premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Many of us admired his gutsy stand against Ottawa, Quebec, anything and anybody who was not good for his province and/or anyone who annoyed him. He was outspoken, funny, pragmatic and according to his opponents ‘uppity.’ We need more uppity in politics and less toeing of the line. Gonna miss you, Danny. Best Buffoon: The BB goes to Don Cherry, of course. Not content with frothing at the mouth every Saturday on Coach’s Corner, this homegrown buffoon insisted on embarrass-

ing himself during the swearing in of Toronto’s new Mayor Rob Ford. Grapes, clad in one of his signature jackets, hot pink this time, used his introduction of Ford to rant on about the media “pinkos” who are evidently out to get him. Cherry is also a nominee in the “Dammit I’m Getting Old So I’ll Pick on Good Young Players Contest” – winners Talk to be announced early in 2011. He’s trashed both Sidney Crosby (wussy) and Alexander Ovechkin (disrespectful) and is now going after the Habs’ PK Subban who’s evidently too mouthy. Can you spell h-y-p-o-c-ri-t-e, Donny? Cherry was also nominated in the Obnoxious Dude Category, but lost out to Kevin O’Leary. See below. Best Political Rocker: PM Stephen Harper of course. Love him or loathe everything he does, this dude gets points for rocking out. Can you imagine Michael Ignatieff singing anything other than a Gregorian chant? Best Obnoxious Dude: Kevin O’Leary of CBC’s Lang/O’Leary sort-of-business show. Sure he’s supposed to be provocative, but his incessant let-them-eat-cake-with-a-chaser-of-oil attitude is annoying. Best Dirty Little Secret: Asbestos. We still sell this carcinogen to Third World countries while putting strict restrictions on it at home. Any number of countries, including France and Japan, have instituted a total ban on asbestos, which has a nasty habit of inflicting lung diseases on those who breathe it in. Best Comedian: The nominees were Russell Peters, Mary Walsh, Ron James, and Rick Mercer. It’s a tie between Peters and Mercer. Peters, like Lenny Bruce before him is adept, profane, and hilarious as he puts racism in its place. Mercer adroitly, consistently, and enthusiastically takes the mickey out of the pompous, the politicians and the pontificators. Nobody does a rant better than Our Rick. Best Canada Needs One: Prime Minister Julia Gillard of Australia. Along with Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, she is one of the world’s few women leaders. Please sir, can we have one too?

Dear editor,

False alarm, but thanks for efficiency. I would like to commend the Maple Ridge fire department. The other evening, I was cooking dinner. My two-year-old daughter woke up from her nap, so I went to get her – she was wet so naturally I started changing her and forgot about the pan of olive oil I had left heating on the stove. It set off the house alarm… we have a monitored house alarm system so the company (unbeknownst to me) automatically called the fire department and called us to see what was the matter. Upon telling them that everything was OK and that I had opened windows to let out the smoke, I thought that was the end of it. I sat outside with my daughter and her friend and waited for the smoke to clear the house. I had sat for about 30 seconds, when I heard fire sirens coming along Dewdney Trunk Road; the truck turned into our street and pulled up at our house. I was so embarrassed. I thanked them and reassured them that everything was OK. I felt like an idiot. They assured me that it happens all the time (around dinner time). I felt so bad, but was reassured that the monitored alarm system would dispatch the fire department if necessary. They were at my house well within five minutes of the alarm sounding, ready to go for whatever situation they found. I would like to commend them on their understanding of the situation. “To shop or not to shop”, that seems to be the main question here in Maple Ridge. When our “wants” are perceived as “needs” and when the average Canadian has overspent his income by 34 per cent, and we are overusing our environmental allotment on this planet by a factor of three, should we not slowly start to question what actually will contribute to true well-being and happiness in our lives? Our values of prosperity and well-being are eclipsed by the illusion that yet another shopping centre, where we can buy something, will make us happier and get us out of the economic crisis. Our world-view has become synonymous with growth, consumption, and profit. For decades we have promoted “growth” in Maple Ridge and hoped it would lead to a better life. Now, that our municipality is sprawling all over the map, we are finding that we cannot afford to even serve our present population, and that we are overspending our tax revenues. Albert Einstein said: “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” In nature, “growth” is only part of the cycle of life, and when something grows out of control it becomes a cancer. In a post-scarcity society we enjoy the privilege that we can live beyond the survival level, however not without great cost to millions of other people who don’t even have the basics of clean water and nutritious food. We can indulge in our wants. But to what level? Do we need another shopping mall on agricultural land, just so that we can buy all our trinkets within five minutes of driving? The part-time, minimum-wage jobs will not allow a family to prosper and the profits of the major corporate stores like Wal-Mart go out of the country. They do not stay in Maple Ridge, or in B.C. or even in Canada. It is the small personal businesses that contribute the most to a community because the owners live here, invest here, buy houses here, pay taxes here, and spend their money here again. Those are the ones we should foster and support. Big box stores are corporations that are only interested in the bottom line: their profits. They are not interested in the local well-being of citizens and employees. In my fundraising efforts for local issues I have always found the small stores the most generous in their giving and support. They are fathers and mothers, they have kids in school here, they live here, and are interested in making this a better place! Let’s celebrate them and support them in our shopping. Let us embrace a spirit of community, where we value everybody, rather than selling out to corporations who try to get the cheapest land, (agricultural land), for their mass-produced junk that comes from China, where there is no protection for the workers, no environmental or safety regulations. If you want to buy “cheap,” be aware that there is a hidden cost in exported jobs to places where they do not have to pay a fair wage. Your gain is usually somebody else’s loss. With B.C. having the highest rate of child poverty, why could our goals not be to make Maple Ridge a “food bank-free, homeless-free community?” Let’s have some charettes about that, rather than about more shopping meccas. That is my Christmas wish.

Local wrestler wins big at SFU

Maple Ridge Secondary school wrestler Payten Smith made history at the War on the Floor tournament. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

In what MRSS wrestling coach Bill McCrae called “amazing”, Grade 9 student Payten Smith made local history at the SFU campus over the weekend, winning three major tournaments in two days. Smith started on Thursday Dec. 16, winning the gold medal in the Grade 9/10 division and so she entered herself into the Grade 11/12 division that afternoon. Without any trouble, she won her second gold medal in the older division, and was up at SFU again on Friday at 7:30 a.m. to weigh in for the SFU Elite Tournament. She suffered some bruised ribs and faced Grade 12 opponents but eventually won another five matches to soar to success in that tournament. Smith, who still finds time outside of wrestling to maintain a Grade A average, did not get a rest on Saturday as she started attending a three day, sevenhours-a-day wrestling camp in Port Moody, which is hosted by some of the best coaches in the province. Smith seemed to take her success in stride and is now just concentrating on developing her technique.

Payten Smith pinned one of her opponents (above) on her knees at SFU’s War on Floor tournament over the weekend. The Grade 9 student fought her way to win three tournaments in the last match-up before Christmas.

“Yeah I guess it was pretty good couple of days,” said Smith. “But I’m really looking forward to learning some new techniques at this camp.’” Coach McCrae was very proud of his

young wrestler. “What Payten accomplished really is amazing,” he said. “Never happened in Maple Ridge before and probably not even replicated in the province.” Smith was also key to the success of the school wrestling team at the Upper Fraser Valley Novice Championships. She won a gold medal at that competition, and McCrae said it was the perfect way to get ready for this challenging tournament at SFU. Smith was not the only MRSS wrestler making McCrae proud at the Burnaby campus last week, as other students pulled through to take home medals and place well. Grade 11 athlete Colton Koopmans won

a silver medal in the 63kg category after he broke his collar bone in the semi-final. He did not lose his focus and fought through the pain, and managed to pin his opponent for the second place win. In the Grade 7/8 division, Cameron Hicks and Brody Koopmans took bronze and Brandon Mitchell came fourth. In the novice and elite divisions, aside from Smith and Koopmans, Shaemen Bhogal won gold, Brandon Stewart, Shaelyn Corwin and Shawn Muller came fourth, and Jeremy Moen and Bennedict Toussiant came fifth. Dominic Zembrowski and Clarissa Morgan came sixth. The wresting team will travel to Kamloops Jan. 13-15 for B.C. Age Class.

The U12 Burnaby Mountain Selects lacrosse team has yet another reason to celebrate at Christmas this year. The team won all its games at the Adrenaline Sin City Showdown in Las Vegas, against top teams from California, Nevada, and Utah. The U12 team, which includes local resident Mateo Le Van, became the fourth Burnaby Mountain Selects team to win this championship in the five-year history of the Selects Elite touring program.

Coaches Jeff Cathrea and Brent Hoskins described the U12 team as “the team to beat” after it smashed the RC Starz from California 12-1 in its opening match-up. The group then beat the Utah Starz 14-1, and Silverfin 16-0. They earned the number one seed

The U12 Burnaby Mountain Selects lacrosse team celebrated their victory with a few day spent sightseeing in Las Vegas.

The Selects were down 2-1 at the break and then 3-2 late in the second half, but fought back and managed to make two last-minute goals to win the Brine Youth Division Championship with a score of 4-3. When the team was presented with a cheque for $250 USD for the win, members decided to donate the money to the Chris Friesen Memorial Fund, an endowment set up at Simon Fraser University in memory of Select athlete Chris Friesen who passed away earlier this year, at age 17. The money will be presented at the Maple Leaf Awards dinner in January to a student athlete playing lacrosse at the university.
