Charges still pending in Pitt rave
Two more people could be charged in connection with a sexual assault at a Pitt Meadows rave in September. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
In September the story of a 16year-old girl being gang-raped by several men and youths, while at least one youth took pictures and uploaded them to Facebook, gripped the attention of local residents and of media across Canada and around the world. A charge of distribution of child pornography is being recommended against an adult male after a sexual assault at a rave party in Pitt Meadows this fall. Police also prepared a charge of sexual assault causing bodily harm against an 18-year-old
man. Both charges are pending Crown approval. “[We are] waiting for Crown to make a decision on recommended charges against an 18-year-old and [an] additional adult suspect,” said Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for the RCMP Lower Mainland District Regional Police Service. Charges have already been approved against a 16-year-old from Maple Ridge for the production of child pornography and for the distribution of child pornography. Police are still experiencing problems in their efforts to prevent the spread of the photos online. Everytime the graphic photos being shared via Facebook and cellphones were taken down, they reappeared elsewhere. “Picture circulation appears to have diminished,” said Thiessen, “but as we become aware, we
attempt to remove [them].” Const. Aaron Lloyd said police began their investigation after a young person saw the photos on Facebook and contacted the Ridge Meadows RCMP. A few hundred people attended the rave, but police encountered problems when trying to interview witnesses, as some young people were uncooperative with the investigation, according to Lloyd. “Despite what some people think they saw, this was rape,” said Sgt. Jennifer Hyland. “There would appear to be some level of a code of silence, for lack of a better term,” Thiessen said in October. Two witnesses did come forward in September. Thiessen praised them for doing so, noting that they were dealing with “extreme peer pressure.” The victim has not been named, to protect her identity,
Sgt. Peter Thiessen RCMP spokesperson
but according to police, she returned to school a short while after the incident occurred and asked to be left alone, to allow
time to heal. A Facebook page set up in support of the girl now has more than 18,000 supporters. Another page, called, “Reasonable Doubt in Pitt Meadows,” states its purpose as being “for the people who have yet to jump on the bandwagon headed out to lynch the men/boys involved in the alleged sexual assault of a 16year-old young woman from Pitt Meadows.” The group is not open to the public anymore, and people must now request to join. Police are still encouraging anyone with information in this case to come forward. On Jan. 1, while some people are sleeping their way into the new year, a brave group from the Ridge Meadows Outdoor Club will be throwing themselves into the chilly waters of Alouette Lake in the annual polar bear swim. “I think we had about a dozen [swimmers] last year,” said Jan Clark, the vice president of the club in charge of activities. “It’s mostly members, although there are a couple of friends who do come.” Clark estimates the outdoor club has been hosting polar bear swims for at least the past 10 to 12 years. She said the number of swimmers has dwindled in recent years, but she hopes for a resurgence. As in previous years,

Outdoor club members Jim Percy (left), Carol Dwyer, Britta Cederberg and Keith Pribyl braved the chilly waters of Alouette Lake at last year’s polar bear swim.
the swim will be at noon on New Year’s Day at the boat launch at Alouette Lake. “We’re hoping the park will be open, and so far it’s looking good,” Clark said. She noted that if for any reason the park is not open that day, the swim will be moved to Hayward Lake. Clark said anyone is welcome to take the plunge. The outdoor club has organized a two-hour hike in the park before the swim. The club will have been running for 18 years this June, and they are always welcoming new members. Clark estimates there are currently around 200 members participating in weekly hikes and monthly meetings. The club is active throughout the winter, with snowshoeing excursions and trips to surrounding wilderness areas like Manning Park and the Callaghan Valley. Pitt fire now paid on call Despite the change to the pay structure, how firefighters do their job will not be affected. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
It has been a few years in the making, but as 2011 begins in Pitt Meadows, the volunteer firefighters will be paid by the hour when they respond to a call for help. Dave Biggin, the spokesperson for the volunteer firefighters during the transition, said he knew the time would come in the department when the volunteer model would no longer be feasible. “It’s almost a second job,” he said of the time commitment. However, he stressed that “even if the POC model wasn’t supported by the City, which it was, we would still do what we do.” Biggin described the agreement made as a “gentleman’s agreement,”

The Pitt Meadows fire department posed outside a burning house, used as part of their training, back in May. as it was easy, smooth and welcomed by the City. Under the old model, as purely volunteer firefighters they received a flat rate stipend as a group, but now they will be considered POC volunteers. “The City has known this was likely going to happen for a number of years and we now look forward to the transition,” said Pitt Meadows fire chief Don Jolley. “Both Maple Ridge and Langley Township have paid on call firefighters as the primary responders at some of their stations and paid on call assisting career members at others,” he added. Biggin said that the group of about 30 volunteers are still considered volunteers, “the only difference is the way in which we get paid,” he said.
The public will not notice any difference, as Jolley said the paid oncall volunteers will still provide the “same high quality service levels as before.” He is hoping that the move to paid on call will add incentives for new “high quality” members to join, “and more importantly, to stay with us for a long time,” he added. Pitt Meadows is not a career department, although they do have two paid firefighters who do maintenance and help with calls, but as Biggin described, many volunteers treat it like a second career. “I don’t mind working 40 or 50 hours a week,” he said, “then I don’t mind getting out of bed at 2 a.m. knowing that I am going to help someone in my neighbourhood.”

Emergency
Man burned in accident by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The Maple Ridge fire department was called to the 26700 block of 112 Avenue at around 5 p.m. on Monday and found a man had caused an accidental fire by using gas to try and ignite material in a burning barrel, according to fire chief Peter Grootendorst. “We had to land a helicopter in Selvey Park,” said Grootendorst, “and the man was airlifted to Vancouver General to their burn unit.” His injuries are severe, but are not considered lifethreatening. “No matter what the temperature is,” Grootendorst said, “gasoline still emits vapour, liquid turns to vapours quickly, and it can cause a flash fire.” Gasoline can produce vapours right down to about minus 40 degrees, said Grootendorst. “Never never use gasoline as a fuel starter,” he said. “It is not meant to be used to start fires.”

Kettle campaign a success
More than $30,000 was raised in the last week of the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign, bringing the total amount up to about $68,000. by Amy Judd
ajudd@mrtimes.com
Members of the community opened their wallets and coin purses in the week before Christmas and dropped more than $30,000 into the red kettles. The Salvation Army Church set a goal at the beginning of December to raise $72,000, and although it did not meet that goal, more money was raised this year than last year. “We’re very happy with the community, how they stepped up,” said Darrell Pilgrim, the Caring Place director. There was some concern at the beginning of the last week that there were not enough volunteers to man the kettles, but Pilgrim said in that aspect as well, the community also came out to support the fundraiser. “They turned out in good numbers in the end,” he said. The Caring Place could not have achieved this amount without support from stores in the community who allowed their volunteers to stand outside and solicit donations. This is also the first year the Salvation Army collected donations through their website, fillthekettle.com, and Pilgrim said they raised more than $600 through online donations, Pilgrim said. “We are extremely excited and extremely happy for the community support,” he said. All the money raised stays in Maple Ridge and 100 per cent of it goes towards the Community Meal Program, which
serves between 9,000 and 10,000 meals per month. “We certainly couldn’t do [the program] without [the Christmas Kettle Campaign],” said Pilgrim. “People living in poverty is a tough thing, and people stepped up,” he added. “We appreciate that people helped us to help those living in poverty.” New Year’s resolution

Milestones
Couple together seven decades On New Year’s Day Bill and Barbara Jones mark 70 years of marriage. by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@mrtimes.com
On Jan. 1, 1941, Europe was in the throes of the Second World War, but it didn’t stop Bill and Barbara Jones from exchanging wedding vows. With their 70th anniversary on New Year’s Day, the bond between the Maple Ridge couple, originally from England, transcended the war, and the decades of social, economic, and technological changes that followed it. Bill said their secret to a long marriage comes down to “believing in each other. Sorting things out. We have our little squabbles and sort things out and that’s it.” Bill and Barbara met at a dance in 1939 in Barbara’s hometown of Colchester, Essex, England. Both were light on their feet, and wore out their dancing shoes every Saturday night. “We were always dancing,” Barbara said. “If I was involved, there was always dancing.” Bill had a bit of a jealous streak. Anytime another suitor led Barbara onto the dance floor, he would feel the tap of Bill’s fingers. “He wouldn’t let anyone else dance with me!” Barbara said. It wasn’t long before Bill had made his mind up; this was the girl he was going to marry. But Barbara needed a bit of convincing. “I wasn’t so sure,” she said with smile. The war could have taken a toll on the couple’s relationship, but Bill wouldn’t let that happen. Countless nights, he would steal away to see Barbara, leaving in the winking hours of the morning to return to his barracks. Many nights, Bill would sneak along a hedge, trying not to catch the ear of a sentry standing at the bottom. “He would get to me about seven in the evening and have to be gone by about five in the morning,” she said. Bill and Barbara made good use of their limited time together in those days. Barbara became pregnant with two of the couple’s four daughters during the war. “Every time he came home on leave, and he managed to get 48 hours off duty, and the next thing, I’d be expecting another baby,” Barbara said. “That’s the way

My job was supervising the production and quality of bullets.” Challenges followed the family during the postwar years. Eileen said her father, who suffered from gastric colitis, was a “guinea pig” for colostomies. He underwent an ileostomy in the early 1950s and wasn’t expected to survive, but he defied the odds. “It saved my life and extended it, I think,” Bill said. “Bill was ill for a long time,” Barbara said. “That was tough because in those days you didn’t get much for pensions.” Following the war, the Jones family moved to Market Drayton, Shropshire, where Bill worked as a mechanic foreman. After eight years, the family made their home in Digby, Lincolnshire before moving to Canada. Bill and Barbara raised their daughters, who are now spread throughout B.C. and the world. continued on Page A9...

Couple have affinity for outdoors ...continued from page A7
Their eldest, 68-year-old Barbara lives in England, 66-year-old Sandra calls Port Coquitlam home, 64-year-old Linda lives in Duncan, and 62-year-old Eileen lives in Chilliwack. “We’re surrounded!” Barbara said. The couple moved to Vancouver in 1978. The Joneses have always had an affinity for the outdoors. “When we lived in Mission, we explored every path we could find anywhere and Bill drew maps for the tourist office,” Barbara said. “The tourists would come asking where they could walk to see the best of the countryside. Bill had the answer.” Bill said he and Barbara have traversed “pretty near every road in B.C.” Bill retired at 65, and now, at 93, continues to stay active. He and Barbara used to volunteer for the Terry Fox Run, and carpet bowled for Mission and Maple Ridge. The fact 88-year-old Barbara has been bound to a wheelchair since suffering a stroke two years ago hasn’t slowed her down. “It locked up all her lefthand side,” Bill said. “But she’s got quite a bit back.

Our View
Newsmaker story unfolds The biggest story to come out of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows in 2010 – the TIMES Newsmaker of the Year – was without doubt a negative one. Indeed, it’s unfortunate that such news as the rave/rape should occur at all, let alone to have been promulgated so close to our homes and our families. And the story continues. Charges are being recommended by local police whose sensibilities, like those of all decent people in the community, have been shattered by the callousness of the attacks – not just the initial sexual attack during the rave, but by ongoing attacks on the victim through social media, continued and exponentially magnified by people who cannot fully realize how vicious they are being with uploads of photos of the incident. We would like to believe that one of the runners up in our Newsmaker considerations, the story of Trooper the dog, is more indicative of the kind of community that we live and work in. Trooper’s initially sad story had its dark undertones, indeed, but there is redemption in his full recovery and his adoption into a caring home. Other stories that came into consideration for the Newsmaker nod included the closures of Riverside and Mount Crescent Elementary Schools. Again, there are dark undertones, as school closures can have devastating impacts on their communities. But again, there is also redemption, as both schools have continued usefulness, and students are thriving in new environs. The Jackson Farm story – a controversial land use decision by Maple Ridge council – had been dragging on for years, but recently came to a rational conclusion. Brandon Yip’s leap to the NHL this year made him our Sports Newsmaker of the Year, and he remains a community asset to make Maple Ridge proud. No dark undertones here. But the rave/rape – which gained national attention – is undoubtedly this year’s top story. Its ramifications continue, as the power – the sometimes awesomely negative power – of social media is driven home. Perhaps there is an upside, though. Perhaps, over time, this story will help people learn to respect that awesome power. – B.G.

ASK US ABOUT SEDATION DENTISTRY
Dear editor,
Re: [Corporate stores not what’s needed, Dec. 24 Letters, The TIMES]. In Maria Raynolds’ world view it’s back to Woodstock, living off the land and ‘setting our spirits free.’ This extreme rhetoric has its appeal because it’s laced with half truths, faulty logic, and appeals to an unwillingness to embrace change or engage in any form of compromise. Nowhere do I sense any willingness to move outside of her narrow focus to understand the complexity and the variety of opinions that must be considered in the decision-making process. Without this flexibility of thinking, we as a community will remain paralyzed and unable to move ahead and progress. So if Ms. Raynolds wants to target corporate stores, then what of Zellers, our signature store, which came under the ownership of a New York-based company NRDC Equity Partners on Feb. 28, 2006? It seems as if Ms. Raynolds has a double standard here in that nothing is mentioned about them as long as they exist in the downtown core. I’m sure that if a major shopping centre was proposed in the downtown core you wouldn’t hear a peep from her. Next, would she pass judgment on a single mom on welfare trying to make ends meet who travels to the Coquitlam Costco to stock her freezer to feed her
family? Or what about those who are forced to work outside Maple Ridge, spending $600 or more on gas, oil, and vehicle maintenance? Are you telling me that they would complain if a mixed development in Albion that didn’t just offer shopping but also employment was available? I’ll take it one step further. Are not large oil corporations like Chevron or Shell Oil just another form of shopping that you disdain? Perhaps we should bike to work until the provincial government sees fit to bring Maple Ridge the SkyTrain. Are you going to deny the seniors in our community the convenience of a onestop shopping opportunity, as most of them that I talk to have to taxi all over Maple Ridge or be driven by ‘Seniors Connect’ drivers, with which my wife and I volunteer, as there is such a great need now that the Extra Foods store is closed? Finally, whatever development scenario transpires in the Albion Flats, it will involve the full participation of all stakeholders and citizens of Maple Ridge and hopefully the spirit of compromise will produce a community-friendly result that will showcase Maple Ridge and be the envy or our neighbours for years to come.

Budget not ‘conservative’ Dear editor,
The headline for the article Ridge passes conservative budget [Dec. 17, The TIMES] was extremely appropriate, especially when one considers the federal Conservatives are actively spending $46 billion more than they collect in tax revenue. Unlike the feds, municipalities can’t have deficits, resulting in our everincreasing tax bills. Contrary to the numbers quoted in the article, most taxpayers will experience a much greater attack on their after-tax income. Anyone living in a “detached house” will have to deal with the fact that the average home price in Maple Ridge, as of May 2010, is $461,000, and if your assessment increases more than the average, you will see an increase in taxes of more than $500 this year. This cannot be considered as “conservative” for anyone. The sad fact is our tax increases are compounded by the increasing assessments we experience in the Lower Mainland. If you spend money to improve your property you are penalized with higher
taxes, while those who let their properties run down get rewarded by reduced taxation. This is absolutely backwards to what council should be encouraging, and the sad fact is they have the power to do something about it but refuse. Councils use the average assessed value to get a base number to base their mill rate upon. By keeping the assessed value the same, adjusted solely by new construction, a mill rate could be developed that would not create such huge increases for those who try to keep their properties presentable, especially those on fixed incomes who don’t want to move. By keeping the present system that penalizes long-term residents on fixed incomes, council forces people to consider downsizing due to escalating taxes. Like the feds, Maple Ridge spends more for our basic services than it collects from taxation, almost 71 per cent more. One of the main culprits is the cost of wages and salaries that have increased consistently over the last five years at a rate of about 10 per cent. Council has done nothing to address this. This has to change, and soon.

Run-of-river good for province It’s fitting that we stop to recognize the contributions Carole James and Gordon Campbell have made to the public life of this province. Having said that, however, in my estimation, Ms. James and the NDP made a critical mistake during the last election in opposing run-of-river power projects. Run-of-river projects are a perfect fit for B.C.’s mountainous, snow-covered terrain and wet coastal climate, and other places in the world would give their eye teeth to have access to the clean hydro resources

It was a record-setting year for donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88 Poppy Fund, with more than $52,000 raised through the sale of poppies in the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day. “Each year it’s been getting larger, but it was a record amount,” said Jim MacDonald, president of the Maple Ridge branch of the Legion. “For a community this size, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows do a considerably larger percentage [of sales] than most other communities.” This year’s total amount raised was between $2,000 and $3,000 more than last year. “You see more people at the Remembrance Day ceremonies, there’s more awareness at schools and among young people, and that reflects itself in poppy sales,” MacDonald said. The Branch 88 Poppy Fund donated $17,000 of the money raised to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation to be used in the PATH Unit, a transitional care area for elderly patients who are waiting for placement in long-term care facilities. The money funded two new beds in the unit, where patients can often spend several days to several weeks waiting for a space to become available. “We asked [the hospital foundation] to give us a wish list, and from there we select what we think we can afford,” said

Accident
Avalanche claims local life
Michael Shawn Buckles died while snowmobiling near the former Coquihalla toolbooth. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
A former Maple Ridge resident’s body was recovered by the Hope RCMP and the Hope and Chilliwack search and rescue teams on Wednesday, a day after he died in an avalanche. Buckles, a 43-year-old resident of Mission, died on Tuesday when he was trapped by an avalanche while on a snowmobile excursion near the former Coquihalla tollbooth, said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, senior media relations officer for the Southeast/North districts. The removal was completed following slope stabilization in the area to permit rescuers to safely enter the area, said Moskaluk. The B.C. Coroners Service, assisted by the Hope RCMP, is continuing its investigation into the death of Buckles. The RCMP is continuing to provide support to the affected family, who have requested that the public
and media respect their wishes for privacy as they deal with their loss of a loved one, said Moskaluk. There were 12 snowmobilers riding a trail that was located northwest of Tulameen on Tuesday, and they were all equipped with recovery gear and GPS locator beacons, according to Moskaluk. He said the avalanche struck at about 1 p.m. and came between the group, sweeping Buckles down the mountain.
No one else was injured, and the rest of the group tried to search for Buckles using his beacon locator. Another man headed to the Coquihalla toll booth area for cell phone reception. “Immediate CPR efforts failed to revive the man who had been buried for approximately 15 minutes,” said Moskaluk. Buckles was on a snowmobile trip with his father and another family member.

Help count local birds The Christmas bird count takes place this Sunday to determine the various species and number of birds in the region. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
If anybody sees a group of people out and about on Sunday morning armed with binoculars and spotting scopes, don’t be concerned – they are Alouette Field Naturalist members taking part in the Christmas bird count. This is a nationwide event that has been running for over a century, and since 1972 in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. From the first signs of daylight (about 7:30 a.m.) until dusk, the volunteers will be out in their areas counting every bird they see. “People don’t even have to be really good birders,” said Duanne Vandenberg, the president of the Alouette Field Naturalists, “because we need people to record what we see.” The club covers an area that is a 24 kilometre diameter circle, and includes Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, a portion of Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Port Moody, north Surrey and north
Langley – but they share part of it with the Burke Mountain Naturalists across the Pitt River. “It’s a big circle,” said Vandenberg. There are currently about 35 volunteers signed up for the event with 11 different areas to cover, but the more the merrier. Susanne Sloboda, one of the organizers for this year’s count, said they have reshaped the areas that are going to be surveyed this year to provide maximum coverage. “The count helps identify resident birds,” said Sloboda, “particularly in areas most in need of conservation action.” The findings are then compiled and reported to Bird Studies Canada, and Sloboda said this data is really helpful and valuable, and helps identify

trends in bird populations and species. “We go out regardless of the weather and count every bird we see,” said Vandenberg. “Then we have a potluck dinner at someone’s house, and that’s the best part of the day,” she joked. Less experienced people will be teamed up with skilled birders so everyone has a chance to learn about the local bird populations.

Gaining ground with the Avalanche Brandon Yip has had a few bumps along the way after signing a deal with the Colorado Avalanche in July.

Maple Ridge’s Brandon Yip may be an NHL hockey player, but his other passion is definitely golf. “I like to golf,” he said. “I golf a lot, almost every day.” When he is home for a visit, he said his favourite place is the Pitt Meadows golf course, but he’ll tee off wherever he can locate a patch of green. Brandon Yip is living the dream of every young hockey player — at age 25 he has been signed to the Colorado Avalanche for at least another year-and-ahalf, and from there, who knows? Yip said the Avalanche like to focus on each game as it happens and not worry too much about the future, and that appears to be his strategy as well. The 25-year-old former Maple Ridge resident and Maple Ridge Secondary School graduate has been playing in the NHL since 2009 and made his mark on the ice in his rookie year. His coach Joe Sacco described him as a “thorn in the side of his opponents,” and Yip seems content with that description. “I like to play hard, get in there, be physical,” he said. “It’s good to help out offensively when you can.” From the cul-de-sac where he grew up playing roller hockey with his friends, to the professional hockey arenas of North America, Yip is one of the few players of Asian descent in the NHL. “I don’t really think about it,” he said when asked if he sees himself as a role model to young Asian Canadians. “It’s kind of weird to think that, but if I can inspire [young people] in any way, that’s great.” Being on one of the youngest teams in the league, Yip also has the good fortune of playing with other professional hockey players who are around the same age. “It’s awesome,” said Yip of the team dynamic. “We have a lot of fun together, the atmosphere is loose — a bit too loose sometimes,” he laughed. The Avalanche have had a successful season so far, but Yip admitted he has struggled a little along the way. “It’s been up and down, kind of,” he said. “I’ve got to get back to playing my game.” Yip was a healthy scratch for one game
of the Year
Michael Martin
Brandon Yip signed a two-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche this year and said being a healthy scratch in early December helped get him back on track. in early December, and that can hard for any player to handle. “Yeah it was a bit of an eye-opener,” he said. “I had some meetings with the coaches, but then I had a couple of strong games.” Two games later, Yip scored the first goal against the Chicago Blackhawks just 48 seconds into the first period. “I just take it one game at a time,” he said. The team had a six-game winning streak in late December, which Yip said was one of the highlights of his season so far. “We had a lot of injuries,” he said, “so a lot of guys have stepped up, it’s great.”
As he heads into 2011, Yip is not worried about the New Year, but he said he wants to be instrumental in helping his team reach a good position going into the playoffs. This is the first year he was not able to make it home to Maple Ridge for Christmas, but was happy his family came down to Colorado to spend the holidays with him. The Avalanche play the Calgary Flames tonight and then the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 2. Michael Martin
Brandon Yip grew up in Maple Ridge before attending university in Boston and being drafted into the NHL.

Ramblers need to get tough by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The Maple Ridge Ramblers only got a short break for Christmas, as they were back on the court these past three days playing in the Douglas College Tournament. On Tuesday they faced Archbishop Carney from Port Coquitlam and beat them 62-31. “[There were] a few mistakes and turnovers, but overall a good effort,” said Ramblers coach Don Herman. The girls had worked on some new defensive schemes, which Herman said they executed well for a first attempt. Going into Wednesday’s game against W.J. Mouat Secondary, Herman said he was concerned because not only is Mouat the #3 team in the province, but “they are big, physical, and play with a mean streak.” His concerns were realized, as he said the pressure from their team was just too much for the Ramblers. The final score was 64-38 for W.J. Mouat. Top scorer Kolbie Orum received two early fouls and had to come out of the game, and Herman said his team never recovered after that. The Abbotsford players “play such a physical style,” said Herman, “and if the officials allow them to hack, whack, and smack, it makes for a long afternoon.” But he said his team could follow that philosophy themselves at times and be more aggressive offensively. “The good thing is our weaknesses were exposed,” said Herman, “and [that] reminds [us] where to spend our time at practice.”

Cancer June 21-July 22: December’s delays are past, so you can confidently move forward, start projects, etc. The general accent lies now on relationships, opportunities and challenges, diplomacy and co-operation. This week contains beautiful “open doors” (especially to love and legal, international and intellectual relationships) and one major closed door (generally, to a “mature” relationship or to a practical, business-oriented agreement). If you recognize which is which, what’s open, what’s closed, you’ll save time, effort. Hint: “H,” “S” and “Y” have closed vibes. Breakthroughs Monday to Wednesday! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Work, work and health issues, Leo. Ah, well, just plod through. The confusions and delays of December are gone. Sunday’s mildly romantic. A new work project might start Monday/ Tuesday – some great luck fills the security-homeinvestment-commitment area these days. It’s a great time to invest – but not in machinery, work tools, new employees, etc. Applies all week to Friday morning. Changing your work-home set-up might benefit you. (E.g., moving your office to your home.) Relationships are pleasant Wednesday noon to Friday. Secrets, sexy lures and good research doorways Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Spend Sunday quietly at home. Romance is very complicated (and will stay so through mid-late 2012). Your romantic side suffers from conflicting motives, urges. Romance is trying to conquer itself, or reshape itself into something new. (For romance, you can read: sense of love, pleasure, self-indulgence, ego, creativity, risk, joy.) Where love is mature, seeks partnership, it succeeds (especially Monday/Tuesday and Friday night/Saturday). Where it “refuses to grow up,” it loses. (I think; everything’s complicated.) Work succeeds Wednesday noon to Friday. Don’t gamble nor invest this week.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Changes loom in your ambitions, career, relations with VIPs, and your reputation. Chase success in these now, as December’s delays are past. Sunday’s wise: ponder your life direction. Pursue ambitions Monday/ Tuesday: good luck accompanies you, but so do a couple of pitfalls. A peer might fight against your rise, or your social inclinations (present or past) could mark you as unreliable, a lightweight or untrustworthy. On the plus side (and the plus is far stronger) your eagerness, as well as your contacts with administrations or government agencies, boost your prospects. Taurus April 20-May 20: Remain “above” prurient interests Sunday. Don’t invest. The weeks ahead emphasize gentle love, wisdom, compassion, far travel, intellectual pursuits, higher education, cultural or legal involvements and “big media.” December’s delays are over in these and other areas, so charge forward, especially Monday/Tuesday, when a new project might start in school, travel, a media campaign, etc. There’s a strong hint that this new venture involves a change and a “larger love!” (You might fall in love!) Work or career duties interfere with those love/travel things, so keep them apart. Gemini May 21-June 20: This week contains yes’s and no’s. The biggest “no” occurs Tuesday and Friday in investment, large money, power, clout and sexual areas. (Especially if these also involve legal, international, intellectual and cultural arenas.) The yes’s? In work, health, career Monday to Wednesday and Saturday: commitment equals eventual winning! If you have to choose between love, creativity and risk on one side and big money, clout, power, sexual magnetism on the other, choose love, creativity, risk: they control the environment right now. Your finances need change, but not expansion. You’re loved.

604-630-3300 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: This entire decade (and half of next) life nudges you to change your abode. This will often peak in winter, as it did last week and does now. But there is also a problem around your home 2010-2012. You might be subject to a force larger than yourself. E.g., you might have to move due to expropriation, a legal ruling, the job market, etc. A change in abode can also merely mean a renovation, or a child moves away to school, etc. – natural, good things! Monday/Tuesday are excellent days to act on these nudges toward change, but not to attempt to overrule them. That won’t work. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The delays and confusions of December are ended, so march ahead. Avoid major investments before Jan. 22. The grace and charm of your communications helps you capture love, especially Monday/Tuesday and Friday night/Saturday. But avoid gossip, revealing too much, or speech that is too sober or ambitious – these chase love away. The same advice, pro and con, applies to travel, general communications, and casual friendships. Watch what you tell “head office.” Chase money Sunday. Home, family co-operate and please you Wednesday eve to Friday. Discuss summer travel. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Chase money, buy and sell, seek a pay raise, more clients, etc. You can safely pursue new projects, as December’s delays are over. But don’t confuse chasing money with chasing your dreams. They are yet are not one and the same. They might directly conflict – e.g., I dream of living on a south sea island, but I can’t earn my living there; or both dreams and your money situation might change and evolve in a kind of tag-team wrestling match. To get your dream you change your job, and that in turn changes your dreams. Such choices arise Monday/ Tuesday (lucky!) and late week.
Jan. 2 - Jan. 9 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness ride a wave of success! Rest, catch your breath Sunday: contemplate future steps. Your energy soars Monday to Wednesday. Communications prove very lucky, especially on the social side. But in all this there might be the accurate realization that your social methods/goals have to change and, further complicating it, that your social desires are tied to your prestige and accomplishments. E.g., you can only join that new circle if your career rises a rung or two. You’ll succeed, you’ll climb that ladder. Chase money Thursday/Friday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Optimism makes Sunday happy, but your energy and charisma temporarily ebb to a low point until Jan. 20. So stay in the background, rest, be charitable, deal with government and/or institutions, fulfil neglected obligations, seek spiritual enlightenment. These areas are emphasized Monday to Wednesday noon – a new project might begin, or you might perceive how these areas are in need of deep change (a long, deep change – now to 2024). Your legal situation or “world view” might be preventing such change. Think! Career and money face super luck Monday/Tuesday – start something! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: December’s delays are finished, so charge after your goals and wishes. Be ambitious Sunday; deal with higher-ups. Your luck soars Monday to Wednesday dawn, especially in legal, publishing, far travel, international, educational, media and cultural ventures, and particularly where these involve social/romantic wishes or career ambitions. Whatever happens, don’t be skeptical: love, embrace, start things! Realize your social goals are changing: promote this. Rest, retreat late Wednesday to Friday. Your charisma and energy soar in time for a New Year’s celebration. You’ll be feted! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

SEASON’S GREETINGS & HAPPY NEWYEAR! Just wanted to thank Team Diverse, and the outstanding installers working with Diverse Flooring. Right from start to finish we were impressed with the professional, courteous manner of everyone on your team. We were called each day to confirm the time the installers would arrive and were continually called to make sure we were happy and if there was anything you could do for us. The end results are fantastic; we love all our new flooring and would highly recommend Diverse Flooring! Enthusiastically
Dick and Marnie Huber
