Two men charged in connection with Pitt rave Victim has changed schools because of bullying but she says she’s getting “much stronger” than before. Amy Judd

The victimization of a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted at a rave party last September has not ended. In a statement to the media on Thursday on her and her family’s behalf, Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for the RCMP Lower Mainland District Regional Police Service, said “our daughter has been bullied and has had to leave school.” In the statement, the girl said “to

the people who did not support me, who called me names, who spread lies about me, thank you because you made me much stronger than I’ve ever been before.” Two men were charged on Wednesday in connection with the sexual assault. Both have been released with the promise to appear in court on Jan. 12. Dennis John Allen Warrington, 19, of Langley, has been charged with making and distributing child pornography. Thiessen said he was arrested at a home he frequents in Maple Ridge on Wednesday. Another man, Colton Ashton McMorris, 18, from Maple Ridge has been charged with sexual assault. He turned himself in to police along with his legal counsel, and was the man

previously arrested and then released. Charges have already been approved against a 16-year-old from Maple Ridge for the production and distribution of child pornography. Ridge Meadows RCMP do not anticipate making any further arrests on the case at this time, according to Thiessen. “Initially we did say and we still do feel that there was more than one suspect involved in this sexual assault,” he said. “The information that we received from witnesses, statements that we received, clearly indicated in our minds that that was the case, however bringing that before the courts is a whole other issue.” Thiessen said that at this point police do not have the evidence to support the allegations and statements in regards to further charges.

What is being referred to as a ‘code of silence’ still exists among many young people that attended the rave, according to police, and those people, most of them teenagers, are not cooperating with the investigation. “They know who they are, we have spoken to those individuals, they do have an opportunity to clear themselves if they choose to, they have not chosen to,” said Thiessen. Police also released details of a toxicology test taken from the girl about 20 hours after the alleged assault. “The test came back negative for any alcohol or for any drug at the time of the testing,” said Thiessen. In 2010, Lower Jackson Farm became the property of the District of Maple Ridge in exchange for Upper Jackson Farm being developed. Jackson Farm was the centre of heated debate for several years as the owners wanted to develop the land. The owners agreed to dedicate Jackson Farm to the district for a park if they got approval for a 113-lot subdivision on the 8.9-hectare Upper Jackson Farm, which is in the Thornhill urban reserve. Council gave the land exchange third reading in September 2009 after a divisive public hearing, which was so packed participants spilled out into the hallway of council chambers. On March 26, Metro

Vancouver voted 66 to 49 in favour of allowing urban development in the Thornhill urban reserve on Upper Jackson Farm in exchange for the District getting Jackson Farm for a park. The development goes against Maple Ridge’s Official Community Plan, as development isn’t supposed to happen in Thornhill until its population reaches 100,000, an area plan is completed, and other triggers are in place. If the development had been further into Thornhill, Daykin said he would not have supported it. Beryl Eales, a longtime advocate for keeping the land undeveloped, called the property the only open pastoral landscape in Maple Ridge where people can gather. She said the land is home to rare plants and valuable wetlands and is popular with walkers and

Two schools closed in June 2010 because of low enrolment. Riverside and Mount Crescent elementary schools officially closed their doors to elementary students on June 30, but both will be used by the school district for other purposes and the students have been absorbed into other schools. Glenwood Elementary absorbed about 100 of the 140 students from Mount Crescent Elementary, which resulted in an unofficial amalgamation of the two schools. In addition, almost all the staff came over, including teachers, special education assistants and Krista Larson, a supervision aid and a parent of a child who moved over from Mount Crescent. She sees the new students mingling in the playground and integrating into groups. “As a parent, (the closure) was harder than for my child,” Larson said, adding that the children have “transitioned well.” The school closure meetings at both schools were emotional with parents arguing to keep their children’s schools open, but in the end, the board of educaiton made the decision to close both because of the numbers. Terri Stumpp, a parent who had a child at Mount Crescent, said she was a “basket case” in August, worried about how her son would integrate into his new school.

But as soon as he started, “he was fine – absolutely fine.” She thought this year would be a writeoff for her son, but it’s turning out to be a great year for him, because “it’s just more friends (for him).” “(The parents) were bitter they were closing our school,” Stumpp said. There was also a fear of the unknown, Stumpp said, but she sees the needs of students being met at their new school. “It’s come around and kids are mixing,” Stumpp said. Jovo Bikic moved from a vice-principal position at Maple Ridge Secondary School to the principalship of Glenwood Elementary this year. Closing Mount Crescent and working to build a new community has taken a lot of work from the staff, students, and parents, Bikic said, but he added the “if this whole scenario ever has to play out again, it would go much smoother.” Bikic said they were able to bring the best of both schools together, and the “new Glenwood” is turning into a true community school, a hidden gem in the city. PAC meetings attract up to 20 parents, Stumpp said, something unheard of at Mount Crescent. Riverside Elementary opened as the Riverside Centre housing international education, adult education and Ridge Meadows College. Topia, a Korean group, will stay at the school at least for the time being. At Mount Crescent, because it is next door to Maple Ridge Secondary, many of the rooms will be used for high school instruction, allowing for the removal of 21 of the 23 portables from MRSS.

Police target impaired drivers With an eye to making the roads safer during the holiday season, the Ridge Meadows RCMP held their annual Counterattack campaign, and Cpl. Dale Somerville of Ridge Meadows RCMP Traffic Services said they found that some drivers still continue to drink and drive. “One of our strategic enforcement goals is to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes,” he said. “This will include enforcing all laws as they pertain to this, including impaired driving, and the immediate roadside prohibitions.” During the month-long campaign, police took nine drinking drivers off the roads, and issued immediate 90-day driving prohibitions, after these drivers provided breath samples that resulted in fail readings on the roadside screening devices. These drivers also had their vehicles impounded for 30 days. Nine more drivers had their driving privileges prohibited for three days after their breath samples produced warning levels. 152 drivers were charged for speeding, one of those was for excessive speeding, and 53 more people were charged for failing to wear their seatbelts. “Ridge Meadows RCMP will also continue to target aggressive drivers, and all persons who fail to wear their seatbelts in a correct manner,” said Cpl. Somerville.

Local residents pepper sprayed

Two men and a woman were pepper sprayed near the McDonald’s restaurant in the 22700 block of Lougheed Highway just after 8 p.m. on Monday Jan. 3. The restaurant’s manager called police and a member of the RCMP Lower Mainland District’s Police Dog Services attended. The officer was able to locate two suspects, without the aid of the dog, and through further investigation learned that a 29-yearold Maple Ridge man was responsible. He was arrested and then later released on a promise to appear in court on a later date.

Businesses victims of B&E

Local businesses have been targeted this past week by thieves in what Ridge Meadows RCMP are calling “separate” incidents. The first incident occurred overnight Sunday, Jan. 2 and the morning of Monday, Jan.

3, to the Vitamin store in the Valley Fair shopping mall, located in the 22700 block of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge. Thieves removed the outside door lock, and stole an undisclosed amount of

money from the store’s cash register. A second similar crime occurred at the government liquor store in the Meadow Vale shopping mall. Police were called at 3:50 a.m. on Jan. 5. A

large window at the front of the store was smashed out, and a quantity of liquor was stolen. A member of the RCMP Lower Mainland District’s Police Dog Services attended, but didn’t find anyone.

Pitt Meadows’ own Jon Scholten arrived at the B.C. Lottery offices today to pick up a cheque for $3.2 million. It was quite a Christmas for the 72year-old man, who won the Christmas day 6/49 jackpot. “My daughter was hosting Christmas dinner this year and called to ask me if I could pick her up a cooking pan,” said Scholten as he received his cheque at BCLC’s Vancouver office. “Along the way I stopped for gas and that’s when I bought the ticket,” he said,

recounting that he purchased the lucky ticket at Petro Canada on Prairie Avenue in Port Coquitlam. But Scholten didn’t learn he was a winner until the next day. On Boxing Day, he checked the numbers and realized he’d matched all six – earning him $3,270,475.30. Instead of telling his family – which included a wife, six children, and seven grandchildren – of the big win, he slid the ticket under a rug and said nothing for three days. “I think I just needed some time to let it sink in,” he said. “It won’t change me. I already have everything I need. I have a good wife, a nice home, and a good life, so I will simply enjoy sharing this money with my family.”

Bears brave chilly waters The New Year’s Day polar bear swim is put on by the local outdoor club.

Jan Clark, the vice-president of the club in charge of activities, said she was pleased with the turnout and that 27 people was a large number of people for a New Year’s Day hike. New 2010 laws make roads safer

Speeding and cell phone restrictions were smart pieces of legislation. There are still a few out there who continue to disregard the law, their own safety, and their responsibility to others. But for the most part, the year-old law aimed at curbing the dangerous actions of compulsive talkers and texters among us has taken hold. It was a year ago this week that it became time to put down the cellphones and Blackberrys while driving – at least for those who weren’t intelligent enough to have already done so. The province started 2010 with a ban on the use of all hand-held cellphones and portable devices used for games or texting while driving. Hands-free technology is still allowed – although rational voices immediately began calling for an extension to the ban, to include them. Studies have shown, in fact, that hands-free devices are actually just as dangerous as hand-held phones and the like, because they pull our attention away from our driving – and that is the real culprit in statistics that show using a cellphone while behind the wheel of a car put you at equal risk of having an accident as driving while drunk. Speaking of which, the provincial government is to be applauded for two further measures it took in 2010 to help make roads a bit safer. Lowering the provincial impairment limit below the federal level – to .05 per cent blood-alcohol from .08 per cent – is an acknowledgment that the legal limit specified in the Criminal Code of Canada is not severe enough. You don’t have to be falling-down drunk to be a deadly hazard to fellow motorists. And for those who choose speed, instead of alcohol, as their weapon of choice, the province has made it more painful for drivers who get caught speeding by more than 40 km/h over the speed limit. All in all, that amounts to a pretty strong year in favour of road safety. Not every new law deserves hearty applause, but this suite of 2010 traffic laws are worth a hardy pat on the back. – B.G.

Malawi thankful for wells READERS’ CHOICE Dear editor,

One week in November 2010, three lucky communities located in the Ntcheu district in Malawi, woke up to find their long-time dreams fulfilled overnight. Their wishes to have clean and safe water were answered when Project Wellness suddenly moved in and provided one borehole (well) in each of the three villages. Based in Maple Ridge, Project Wellness is a non-profit organization helping Malawi. The organization has previously been associated with 14 water boreholes and has provided other materials including cash donations in the poor communities in the Ntcheu district since 2005. The communities in the Kantande and Mtema villages are overwhelmed with disbelief and joy that at last they have safe and clean water. As a result, the problems of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea and bilharzia are now a thing of the past. In addition, water is being used to grow more crops for food and for sale in the dry season, which is bringing additional money to the villagers. The entire communities in the Kantande and Mtema villages wish to convey their thanks to the Rotary Club, who have provided funds for the water wells. In addition to the boreholes, the communities in Ntcheu district highly appre-

ciate the material and cash donations which they have received from Project Wellness over the past five years. These items have included soccer balls, soccer team uniforms and clothes. Particularly significant is the assistance given to more than 400 orphaned children who have continued to receive food and real care. For this purpose, Project Wellness has constructed two specially designed buildings, or “feeding halls,” in which the orphaned children receive daily care, tuition and food. The feeding program has become a tremendous success and has brought much joy in the lives of the poor children. The assistance given to the poor people in Ntcheu district has made a real difference in the ordinary lives of numerous men, women, and children and continues to be greatly appreciated. However, the need for more material and financial aid is still on the rise. As we are writing this report, at least 10 vulnerable villages need water wells as a matter of urgency. Unless the water wells are donated, poor people’s health and lives are at great risk.

Canadians should be ashamed that a homeless person in Port Coquitlam died recently, let alone others across this national landscape. It is truly mindboggling that we have taxpayer money for sickening G20 summits or toilet bowl cost for the Olympics, illegal refugees, criminals like Clifford Olson and Russell Williams, military grossly overpriced jets and more. However, we do not have money for the homeless or poverty stricken Canadians or social programs. Why bother with the poor or the homeless: let us stereotype them with the same brush that they are losers, boozers, lazy or drug addicts with mental problems? Wrong! They are human beings within the cavity of this country who deserve help more than Africa, Haiti, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq or other freeloading whining nations dependent on our “freebies” for decades. It is apparent that our imbeciles in the government (current or past) are more interested in butt kissing the international community, than addressing the dire and growing

social dillemna here. We have enough money and resources to wipe out the drug cartel in South America or Mexico and other lands like Afghanistan but there lacks moral collectivity in prioritizing our resources. We’d rather fight illegal wars while our neighbours to the south steal the resources and while the body count rises. Our tax money needs to be spent on renewing fish stock resources, putting people back to work, helping the needy in our land before others abroad and, protecting our borders from criminal activity or human trafficking. Sadly put, like our police forces, you cannot trust elected officials once they squeeze through the cracks to relish their salaries, perks, and job benefits, instead of morally showing leadership and accountability. I recall a few years ago Toronto Metro police could not extricate a frozen body of a homeless person for several weeks and this is sickening. It’s mindboggling that we’re actually having to import electricity in a province as rich in untapped renewable energy resources as B.C. is. Talk about taking coal to Newcastle. And I mean that literally because much of the electricity we’re importing comes from coal. If people in this province can make one collective New Year’s resolution, I hope it will be for B.C. to become electricity self-sufficient in 2011, and an exporter of electricity rather than an importer.

We all require some boundaries in our lives In the weeks before Christmas we were bombarded with articles telling us how to survive the excesses of the holidays by setting limits on what we would eat and drink. I won’t be surprised if similar limits appear in recommendations for making New Year’s resolutions. We all know what limits are, don’t we? And we can discover a lot about who we are by the limits we set for ourselves and others. In a way, our limit setting defines us: how we control our behaviour, our relationships, and our spending and buying will largely

vote we are made aware of city limits, local, provincial and federal electoral boundaries. We fight against restraints placed on services and activities that are important to us, especially health, sports, and education but, at the same time, we argue about the curbs we want governments to put on spending and on the taxes we are required to pay. We also come face to face with the limits nature places on us in height and fitness and intelligence. Some of us find ourselves with more restrictions than others as we struggle to

live so-called normal lives. Some limits or barriers are seen as challenges. The Olympic Games and most major athletic events are designed to attempt to break through them. One of the definitions of a limit is: The farthest edge or boundary, where something ends or must end. Skiers may know this, but the adventurous and fearless among them will test those edges and boundaries. In earlier times we were limited by how far we could walk or run and those limits often became the defining characteris-

Senior boys smash Seaquam The senior boys Pitt Meadows basketball team returned from Hawaii on Dec. 23 and had a short break for Christmas before facing Seaquam Secondary from North Delta on Dec. 28. The final score was 62-39, with Trevor Severinski scoring 14 points and 17 rebounds. Brett Snowball scored 15 points and Malcolm Williams scored 10. Two days later the Marauders faced Burnaby South and it was a close game with a final score of 72-68 for Burnaby. The boys are in the Abbotsford Collegiate Snowball tournament, which started Jan. 6.

Two Maple Ridge graduates and sisters have faced each other in the pool for a water polo match only once before, but considering they both play competitive water polo for two American universities, they could meet again before the season is over. However, Kelsey and Allison Campbell do not let it faze them. “You’re aware of it, but you try not to let it affect you,” said Kelsey, 21. “While you’re in the game you’re focused on what’s going on,” added Allison, 19. The sisters are very close and although they may joke about whose team is better in the water, they are not serious. “We both want the other to do well,” said Kelsey. Both agreed that it was probably harder for their mom Robyn to watch them play each other. “She gets a bit stressed,” laughed Kelsey. They both competed with the Haney Neptunes and graduated from Maple Ridge Secondary

Now Kelsey attends Indiana University, and Allison is at the University of Maryland. Both are on water polo scholarships and are decorated players. Kelsey has played for Indiana since 2006. Olympic medal in their future, they both want to continue to play water polo while exploring other aspects of their lives. As this is her last year in school, Kelsey wants to play in the NCAA Championships. When asked about balancing playing polo and studying, she said “It’s like having a full-time job on top of being a full-time student.” The sport has taught both girls excellent time-management skills, however, and that is something they can take out of the water and into their professional working careers.

Registration for the Race the Ridge Cycling Stage Race is now open and some categories fill fast. Cyclists are focusing their sights on this race, set for May 7 to 8 and presented by the Local Ride Bike Shop in Maple Ridge. Barry Lyster, owner of Local Ride, said this race is shaping up to be one of the biggest in its nine-year history. He said it showcases the world-class cycling opportunities in the community while offering exciting and spectator-friendly events. “I’m really proud of what Race the Ridge has become over the last nine years,” said Lyster. The Caring Place Ministries

2010 was a signiﬁcant year for The Salvation Army in Maple Ridge. The Caring Place saw an increase in the demand for services from a hot meal to a bed for the night; increases were seen in all aspects of our ministry. The demand for advocacy services has also increased and we continue to help connect people to the various services in the community to meet their needs. These people are those who live in the community and who are at risk of becoming homeless. Our Community Advocate, Connie McGonigal, works with families and singles who need help navigating the system. Often, the Salvation Army is the ﬁrst place people turn when they need someone to help them.

Our Community Meal Program continues to serve over 300 people, including families, each month. People can come to have a meal any day of the week and they will find a caring and warm reception here by our staff and volunteers. Meals are served three times a day, seven days a week by our wonderful kitchen staff. The demand for this program continues to increase each year. This fall we saw some months when we served over 10,000 meals. This is a significant increase in demand for our services and it has been steadily climbing for several years. When you have no where to turn and have no place to call home, you can always turn to The Salvation Army. Here at The Caring Place our Emergency Shelter, funded by BC Housing, has been busy providing a warm pace to sleep for men, women and children for seven years now. Our Cold Wet Weather mat program has been providing a place to sleep during the winter for over 10 years now. We continue to respond to the growing need in our community for this service. Our advocates work hard to help people find their way back to stability making referrals for housing, addictions recovery and treatment programs and mental health assistance. We also are pleased at the success we see every day in our Genesis program. Many of our residents suffer from addictions and mental health issues. The Genesis program allows them to stay up to three years while they work to bring their lives into focus and continue to heal and recover. Many have found life again through our program and have gone on to live successful lives in the community. All of this is why we are so thankful to all of those people in our community who help to support us. Without your continued support we would not be able to offer these wonderful and necessary programs to our community. So, we thank you for everything you do for us each year. THANK YOU FOR HELPING OTHERS FIND LIFE AGAIN!

I have always said that one of my favourite things about being a chef is that I get to play with knives. Although this may sound very adventurous in a James Bond fashion, knife skills and proper/safe cutting practices are a very serious subject in the kitchen. With some basic knowledge, you can start to overcome any cutting intimidation you may have. In this column, I will focus on the tools themselves — knives. This will be the first of three instalments on cutting. My next column will focus on cutting boards, and the third column will focus on cutting techniques. There are many choices when trying to decide which knives will adorn the collection of cutting tools in your kitchen. The marketplace is saturated with everything from mailorder deals to high-end specialties. First and foremost, I have to stress that one usually gets what one pays for. Before you reach for your credit card when you see the full collection of ginsu knives for only $19.99 on TV, think about it realistically. How well are these knives manufactured? Once the twenty dollars is divided between the TV air-time costs, the production of the commercial, and any middle-men that may be in between (such as marketers, etc.), how much is actually going toward the manufacturing of these knives? Sherry Lynn Marie THORKELSON (nee Gaudette)

30.06.1957 – 20.12.2010 The family of Sherry Thorkelson is saddened to announce her sudden and tragic death as a result of a car accident near Yale, BC on Highway 1 while en route to Prince Rupert to spend Christmas with family and friends. Sherry is survived by her much loved daughter Julie – the Light of her Life. She also leaves behind her parents, Edith and Lucien Gaudette (Prince Rupert BC); brother Darryl (Heather), nephews Travis and Douglas (Mission, BC); brother Rick (Nancy), and nephew Joshua (Maple Ridge, BC); sister Beverly (Flora), nephew Benjamin, niece Jillian (Tristan) and their son Jeremy, niece Kirstin (Josh) and their children Peter and Amy (all of Prince Rupert, BC), nephew and Godson Robert (Laura) and their son Nicholas (Houston, BC); sister Lisa (Gordie), niece Renee and her son Brodie (all of Courtenay, BC). Sherry is also survived by her dear sister-in-law Joy (Ken), nephews Cai and Wynn (Prince Rupert, BC) and by Julie’s dad, Derek (Pitt Meadow, BC). Also mourning her loss are numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins (especially her cousin Shelley) and many, many dear friends. Sherry loved life, loved people and was always happy and upbeat. Sherry was a collector of friends. She always made time for her friends and, as a result, they all felt special. She was extremely thoughtful and kind to all. Above all else, Sherry was a loving and utterly devoted mother. Julie was the centre of her universe. We know she will continue her vigilant watch over Julie from heaven. Sherry will be deeply mourned by her family and friends and sorely missed forever. Rest in peace, dear Sherry. A Celebration of Sherry’s Life will take place on January 15, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall, 12460 Harris Road, Pitt Meadows, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may go to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
