Trustees annoyed by chair postings

Committee positions drew out emotions at board meeting. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Two school board trustees expressed displeasure over committee appointments prompting sparks to fly on Wednesday. Trustees Dave Rempel and Kathie Ward were not reappointed to the board of the Ridge Meadows Education Foundation. Ward said she was “saddened” when she received a phone call removing her as the trustee appointee on the foundation’s board while Trustee Dave Rempel said he didn’t feel the subject was discussed properly in a meeting. He asked whether email correspondence was now considered a meeting, reading the board’s bylaw that said appointments should be discussed in a meeting. Trustee Stepan Vdovine said he was “surprised” that the committee appointments would come up at this point, since the request for positions had been put out 34 days ago. He added that Rempel’s concerns were “political grandstanding.” Trustee Eleanor Palis put forward a motion to have the topic discussed at a future meeting, but this was rejected by the board. According to the board of education’s bylaw, the board chair is responsible for appointing trustees to committees.

Snowfall fuels fun, not issues by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge firefighters dealt with four calls of downed power lines due to snow-laden branches on Wednesday morning, one instance which left Whonnock Elementary School in the dark, forcing it to close for the rest of the day. Everything was back to normal and up and running again on Thursday. According to the BC Hydro website, about 1,300 people, west of Hayward Street and east of 240 Street, were affected by power outages due to downed power lines on Wednesday, with power being restored by about 12:30 p.m. It appears drivers were taking it easy on the roads as there were no serious accidents or crashes reported to local police and fire departments. Residents need to be aware that after a snowfall melts quickly, such as in Wednesday’s case, all drains should be cleared and that is what city workers were doing all over the region on Wednesday morning, said fire chief Dane Spence. All other public schools were open and many took advantage of the snow by letting the children play outside during their breaks. For instance, students at Eric Langton Elementary took part in a snowman building competition and were so excited they barely noticed when the bell rang at the end of lunch.

Council seats attract hopefuls

With a muncipal election only 10 months off, locals are starting to discuss running. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

There are 10 months until Maple Ridge citizens can file a nomination papers to run for municipal council, but some potential candidates have already declared their intention to run. John McKenzie and Grover Telford have decided to take the plunge and run for Maple Ridge council, joining Claus Andrup. McKenzie, who lives in Haney and has been involved in community initiatives to revitalize the area, has been involved with the NDP party for many years.

He said he doesn’t like the current provincial government’s focus on megaprojects while child poverty rates are the highest in the country. But he still believes Maple Ridge needs to develop its commercial base and he supports development of the Albion flats. McKenzie has been driving by the unused land for 20 years, and it’s time to “turn it into something that is useful for the community,” he said. McKenzie said he regularly attends council meetings, and there are a lot of issues that are pending that need to be moved forward. “We can’t be seen as a municipality that can’t get anything done,” he said. Pitt Meadows resident and event planner Jesse Sidhu said he is impatient to implement ideas he has about helping local businesses become stronger, in his new role as head of the local chamber of commerce. He said one of his key mandates is to make sure the chamber is represented in all major facets of the community, as the “voice of business.” “My goal is to definitely have a representative at all key associations,” Sidhu said. • More online : www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Katzie First Nation has partnered with the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, as the two groups aim to provide Aboriginal students every opportunity for a quality education. Representatives from the local school district and the Katzie First Nation signed a Local Education Agreement Tuesday that formalizes their intent to work together. “It’s a recommitment to work together toward success for Aboriginal students, specifically Katzie Aboriginal youth,” Doug Hoey, principal of Aboriginal education for SD42 told The TIMES. “It covers certain components of our responsibility to help the students and the Katzies’ responsibility to help the students.” Chief Jay Bailey and council members Robin Green and Lesley Bailey of the Katzie First Nation, and School Board Chair Ken Clarkson, superintendent Jan Unwin and secretary-treasurer Wayne Jefferson of SD42 signed the document in a short, informal ceremony at the Katzie band office. “The local education agreement, in my mind, just solidifies the great relationship that we do have with all levels of the school

On March 3, 2010, representatives from the school district, the Ministry of Education and local Aboriginal communities signed the Third Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement. SD42 is the first school district in British Columbia to sign its third agreement, which aims to improve Aboriginal students’ academic success and sense of belonging. The Local Education Agreement also builds on last year’s agreement to “support increased awareness and respect for the heritage of First Nation people” in public schools, according to Hoey.

Crime

Robber nabbed after withdrawal

A 28-year-old man has been charged with armed robbery after a bank heist on Tuesday. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

An attempted bank robbery was foiled Tuesday, thanks in part to an attentive teller. At approximately 10:50 a.m., a man walked into the TD Canada Trust Bank in the 20300 block of Dewdney Trunk Road, demanding money. According to police, he indicated he

had a weapon but didn’t produce one. But he was given an undisclosed amount of loot before leaving. It’s the actions of an employee, who kept watch on the suspect, that is credited with helping catch him. The staff member saw the bandit leave in a blue Nissan Pathfinder and noted the licence plate number. When police arrived, they were able to track him to a nearby residence, where he was arrested without incident. “This clearly shows how the police and community can work together to solve crime,” said RCMP Insp. Derren Lench.

“Our first responders had just got to the bank, as other members, including integrated support units Air One, and police dog services, which are all part of the RCMP Lower Mainland Regional Police Service, got to where our suspect was,” Lench said. “Through these quick actions, the suspect was safely, and quickly, taken into custody.” Robert Ryan Carr, 28, appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Wednesday to face a robbery charge. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance Thursday. Results from that appearance were not available by press deadline.

Classmates apologize

ASK US ABOUT SEDATION DENTISTRY

Students of an alleged rave rape victim wrote letters for online smears.

“You’ll probably never be afraid to go to the dentist again.”

by Jennifer Saltman

Postmedia Network Inc.

A small group of Maple Ridge high school students wrote apology letters to the victim of an alleged rape after making inappropriate comments online. The students went through a school-based restorative justice program before apologizing to their classmate last fall. “These kids actually did think about what they said and realized it wasn’t fair and wasn’t appropriate and apologized,” said School District 42 communications manager Seamus Nesling. The 16-year-old target of the comments was allegedly sexually assaulted at a Pitt Meadows rave on Sept. 10 and 11. The incident was captured on camera and photographs and comments circulated on social-media sites such as Facebook. “At that time there was a fair bit of back and forth with people not really thinking about what they were saying on either side

Three men, including one young offender, are facing various charges. of the issue,” Nesling said. In a statement provided by police last week, the teen’s family said bullying forced her to drop out of school. Nesling confirmed that the victim is taking most of her classes online and in other ways, but is still attending school for one class. “The important thing for the school is this girl is still part of the school community,” Nesling said. “When she does come into the school she is definitely welcomed and respected as part of the school community and wants to be there.” Charges have been laid against three people in

connection with the alleged assault and spread of photos. A 16-year-old boy was charged shortly after the incident with producing and distributing child pornography. He cannot be named due to his age. Colton Ashton McMorris, 18 of Maple Ridge, was charged last week with sexual assault. His lawyer appeared in court Tuesday, and will be back again Jan. 20 to fix a date for trial. Dennis John Allen Warrington, 19 of Langley, was also charged last week with producing and distributing child pornography. He was in court Wednesday and back Feb. 3 to fix a date for trial.

Development

Albion proposed density sparks debate

Some councillors questioning relevance of the current OCP. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

A development proposal in Albion caused some of Maple Ridge council to question whether parts of the Official Community Plan are still relevant to the community. The proposal to build more densely on 112 Avenue in the Albion area was deferred to a later meeting by Maple Ridge council. This came, despite a staff recommendation that it not be forwarded since it didn’t fit the Official Community Plan. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie put forward a motion to defer the application to see if it could be revamped to fit the spirit of the OCP and meet a need for more affordable housing. Her concern is whether Maple Ridge’s “OCP (is) meeting the intent

Business

Zellers purchase could be ‘good news’ for Haney by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Zellers is being bought by Target, a move Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said is “good news for the community.” Zellers, a division of the Hudson Bay Company, is the largest retail store in Maple Ridge and the

anchor tenant at Haney Place Mall. On Thursday, Target – a giant American retail chain – announced it has agreed to buy leasehold interests of 220 Zellers sites for $1.825 billion. In a letter to Daykin, Target said it was “very excited about coming to Canada” and that the company believes in “strengthening the com-

munitites where we do business.” While it didn’t specify whether a Target would come to Maple Ridge, the store announced it will be opening in Canada in 2013. Maple Ridge council is pushing to develop the downtown core, and the Haney Place Mall, including Zellers, has been a key to the vision.

Former Maple Ridge resident Victoria Turley appeared in court on Jan. 10.

A spirited debate arose at Tuesday night’s council in committee meeting in Pitt Meadows, when the subject of a requested subdivision was discussed. Owners of a Neaves Road property are seeking approval for a subdivision in the form of a home site severance, or they could lose their family farm. The application has already been reviewed by the Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC), and even though the application does not meet the required minimum lot sizes for agricultural land in the zoning bylaw, they, along with many council members, felt the application met

the “spirit” of the application. “In this instance there isn’t a right or wrong answer,” said Kim Grout, director of operations and development services. The council debated between two options; one involved keeping the barns on the property intact, even though they are vacant. The other entailed removing the dairy barns and silo and reclaiming the land for agricultural production. “I’m a little torn on this one,” said Mayor Don MacLean. “While I appreciate what the land commission’s [the Agricultural Land Commission] feelings are towards home site severance, to tear down two or three barns really doesn’t make sense to me.” However, council decided to support the request for a subdivision based on removing the dairy barns and silo and have forwarded their comments to the ALC who will review the situation further.

Taxi driver robbed with syringe

by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

A 41-year-old former local resident will begin her trial on Feb. 14 at 9:30 a.m. at Port Coquitlam Provincial Court for the charge of failing to provide the necessities of life to 16-year-old Shannon Raymond in July 2008. Victoria Turley was charged in October 2009 after police spent a year gathering evidence in the case. “Investigators were informed Shannon had been attending a social function at a private residence in Maple Ridge. Police are alleging at this time that the accused failed to provide the necessaries of life and Crown counsel has approved a charge,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh at a press conference in Oct. 2009. “Shannon was in the care of the accused and was in medical distress. This issue was not addressed,” he said. Police said Turley’s charge is under a rarely used section of the criminal code.

After threatening a taxi driver with a syringe, a female suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of money on Monday Jan. 11 just after 12 p.m. The holdup took place at Edge Street and Brown Avenue, and the suspect ran towards 227 Street on Brown after vacating the cab. The driver had picked her up

shortly before the incident. She is described as a white woman, between 30 to 40 years old, approximately 5 ft 2 in tall, with a thin build. She was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, and large dark sunglasses.

On Saturday at 3 p.m., the doors close at the Westminster Savings branch behind Haney Place Mall, and reopen again at 9 a.m. Jan. 17 at the corner of Lougheed Highway and 224 Street. After 40 years at the old location, the organization is moving into the future with a new building, new technology and more facilities, said senior branch manager Paul Pederzini. The current building, just about a block away from the new site, is at least 40years-old. “It’s kind of patchwork, there’s no real flow to it,” Pederzini explained. “It doesn’t offer us the opportunity to build proper offices for the staff.” One of the key functions to the new

building will be 20 private offices where customers can discuss their financial plans in privacy, which is something they were not able to do at the previous branch. Also key to the move was the location of the new digs – in the downtown core. “That corner, our customers will be able to access our financial services, the mall and other retailers within a mile area,” said Pederzini. “It’s one-stop shopping.” When staff found out they were going to move, they were really excited, Pederzini said. But it seems that the almost 10,000 customers are perhaps even more excited than the staff now. “We’ve had fantastic support from our client base,” he said. “We’re just ecstatic city council made us a part of their [downtown revitalization] project.” Pederzini and the 40-member staff at Westminster Savings are anticipating that customers will feel the “wow factor” of the new location immediately. “It’s upscale, modern, and colourful,” said Pederzini. Business will continue without interruptions on Jan. 17.

Our View

Environment leadership non-existent

Creative

Canada’s new environment minister has a peculiar take on his job. Rather than safeguarding the natural world, he sees it as his role to make its destruction more palatable. Peter Kent went on national television on Thursday to assure Canadians that everything is fine. He acknowledged that climate change is a reality, but told his audience we’re right on track to solve it. We’re going to revise regulations for long-haul trucking, for instance. Oh, and our nation’s gas-belching oilsands are really not a problem. Such words from an environment minister are astonishing. Thirteen years ago, Canada and other nations signed a protocol to reduce greenhouse emissions to six per cent below 1990 levels. That was considered a modest and necessary first step on a path to averting disaster. Since then, our emissions have climbed to 24 per cent above 1990 levels. With skyrocketing energy consumption and unwavering reliance on fossil fuels, we are showing no signs of turning that trend around. What Canada needs is a clear, comprehensive plan for systemic transformation. But Kent’s comments show he has absolutely no intention of delivering one. Instead, Canada’s new minister for the environment is focusing his energy on convincing the public and the international community that there’s really nothing wrong. This, in and of itself, is terrifying. In any area of private industry, someone who so completely neglects the requirements of his or her job would be summarily fired – and those responsible for the initial hiring would likely lose some credibility among colleagues within the company. Considering our planet’s environmental future is directly attached to Mr. Kent’s job’s impact, the Canadian public should bear such thoughts in mind, when election time finally rolls around again.

Municipal politics

Be it resolved Mr. Mayor Dear editor,

Mayor Daykin is, in my view, a very nice man and likely the most affable man I have met. Ernie Daykin made his New Year’s resolution and follows as written word for word: “I want to continue to see Maple Ridge move forward and realize the potential that our community has and to be a great place to work, play, and much more. I see that being done by staying the course and through positive constructive relationships and partnerships.” As most politicians past and present, they all talk the talk but few walk the walk. Let us dissect his resolution. He wants to continue to move forward and realize our potential that our community has to be a great place to work and play. If that were true, Maple Ridge would already have new shopping and more local jobs offered by the new industry that should be in place correcting the property tax imbalance that is so prevalent. This obviously is not the case. I see no daylight in the horizon, just

more of the same talk and planning with no course set with affirmative action. Mayor Daykin also likes positive constructive relationships and partnerships. This should be Ernie’s strong suit. Why then did he and other members of council scare away the golden goose, referring to the developer Mr. Ernie Beaudin and many others before him? Maple Ridge has a strong NDP contingent set on saving farmland, that I may add is not productive or has never been farmed. This group is led by two councillors, Craig Speirs and Linda King, and supported by NDP MLA Michel Sather. This group of naysayers is about 3,000 strong and have been very successful in the farm field of non-development. Maple Ridge has a population of about 75,000, so how do 3,000 naysayers stop all progressive movement for more than 20 years? For the most part, I believe the problem is apathy and busy lives. Most residents have just given up hope of any progressive change and continue to shop and work in other cities. Did you know the 2008 election results had a voter turnout of just 29.05%? If Maple Ridge is to move forward, we the citizens must make major changes to council. I will be working to help make the changes possible, but we need your help for the progressive changes. Are you tired of working and shopping out of town? Are you tired of the traffic? Would you like to live in the city of Maple Ridge? Please vote for change November 2011.

Jim Bulpit, Maple Ridge

Dear editor,

This letter is in response to your front page headline and article [Realtor mourns a Georgian mansion, Jan. 11, The TIMES]. You also show a photo of a very nicely dressed young man in front of a large home. I find this very misleading, because as I read further into the article you state that the young man plans to start selling real estate, as soon as he gets his licence. I can only assume then that he does not have a real estate licence, but yet your headline refers to him as a realtor. A realtor by definition is a real estate representative who is a member of an organization of persons engaged in the business of buying and selling real estate, such as the Canadian Real Estate Association, or locally here a member of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver. Anyone who has earned the right to be referred to as a realtor has spent hours studying a variety of courses in preparation for taking and successfully passing the real estate exam. To refer to an individual who has not completed these courses and successfully passed the exam is an insult to the many realtors who have done so. I respectfully submit that you owe an apology to the many professional realtors who have studied the courses and successfully completed the examination requirements. By doing so, they have earned the right to be called a realtor. To refer to an individual who has not as yet completed the courses and successfully passed the examination requirements simply should just not be done.

Assessment

Albion lacking in amenities Dear editor,

Happy days, 2011 has arrived and we are all excitedly looking forward to what the New Year might bring us. I walked to the mailbox last week and found our BC Assessment notice for this year. I had read in the local paper that the assessments in Maple Ridge were going up on the average of 5.54 per cent. Imagine my dismay to discover that ours has gone up almost 11.5 per cent. I checked all of the neighbour’s assessments on epost and yes, we are all in the same boat. We all live in the east Albion area, and for these kind of usurious rates we still have virtually no services or amenities. We have no grocery stores (apologies to the excellent specialty store Bruce’s Market), no pharmacy, doctors’ office, gas station, and on and on the list goes. We have overcrowded schools, unfinished roads (have you driven 240th in the last couple of years) and oh, where is the firehall that we were going to get at 112th Avenue and 240th Street? I find it amazing that we have a municipal planning department, yet it is hard for people like myself to imagine there is any plan for the Albion area other than approving subdivisions and creating another park. Give us some local amenities, and maybe I won’t feel so ripped off by this assessment increase, which can only result in a fairly major tax increase.

MRCS alumni take to the stage Blood Brothers addresses dark themes in a musical tragedy about two brothers.

ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE

ARCHBISHOP CARNEY REGIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL

by Teija Beck

Wednesday, January 19th - 6:30 pm

Former students of the Maple Ridge Christian School theatre program have given their time and talent to produce the school’s first all-alumni play this January. “We wanted to give back to the school,” said Hillary Frew, who graduated in 2004. “Alumni currently don’t have a very large role in the MRCS community, and we hope that by running an all-alumni play we can change that.” The production, Blood Brothers, moves through the lives of two brothers as they grow up and eventually fall in love with the same girl. According to 2008 graduate Daniel Robb, the play is “definitely not your typical musical.” He said the play deals with dark themes and modern issues faced by teenagers, such as addiction, pregnancy and unemployment.

n the basement of Spencer Levan’s home in Maple Ridge, you’ll find his shrine, a treasure trove of framed, signed jerseys, a white hard-hat marked with signatures and inspirational messages, team pictures, and other personal memorabilia. Also in the mix: a signed photo of one of Levan’s hockey heroes, Gordie Howe. This collection is a snapshot of the life of a man who has been a fixture on the local amateur sports scene for more than a quarter of a century. Back in 1983, Levan began coaching baseball teams that his sons Derek, now 33, and Mathew, now 30, played on at the Tball, Tadpole, and Mosquito age groups. But Levan’s biggest impact came in the winter, in the hockey rink, not during the summer, on Troy Landreville/TIMES the baseball diamond. Hunt, went on to play in the NCAA Frozen Four. Yip, currently a winger with the Colorado Avalanche, possessed the work ethic necessary for a future pro, Levan said. “He was such a great kid in minor hockey,” Levan said. “He had talent, he had work ethic, and he had the right attitude.” Regardless of the talent level of each new crop of players on his Ridge Meadows Tier 1 Midget team, Levan’s coaching philosophy remains the same. long with a veteran group of assistant coaches, including Jim Lindsay (who Levan has coached with for more than two decades), his son Mathew, and Dave Griffith, Levan has always believed in teaching life lessons on and off the ice. “It’s about respect,” Levan said. “Immediate skill correction is probably one thing that we excel, and also immediate praise.” Take away their cellphones, laptops, Blackberrys, and iPhones, and the players are the same, relatively speaking, as they were in the ’80s and early ’90s. “I had this talk with my wife,” Levan said. “They [the players] are more sophisticated now, they are more knowledgeable now about certain things, but about other things, they are exactly the same. The dressing room talk really hasn’t changed that much over the past 15, 16 years.” One thing that has changed over the years is hockey becoming a year-round avocation for some players. Levan doesn’t endorse this approach to the game. He believes to become a more rounded athlete, and person, you need to have a true off season. “I believe kids need to get into other sports,” he said. “Kids need to take their skates off. Like Gretzky preached, and Howe, they all played a different sport in the summer. It gives them perspective and I think that’s really important. Some of these kids who have their skates on for 12 months a year don’t do themselves much good.”

The Meadowridge Knights are looking for six new volunteer board members. The local football league, for ages 5 to 18, is holding their annual general meeting this month, and is gearing up for a new exciting season, said volunteer board member Paul Gill. There are 12 spaces on the board for volunteers and six of those need to be elected at the AGM for the next two years. Anyone is welcome to come out, they do not have to be parents of football players or experts in the sport said Gill. The season starts in September and registration for 2011 will be held sometime around spring break, depending on when the new board decides what is best. “We just hope kids have fun playing football,” said Gill. The Knights AGM will be held on Tuesday Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. at Thomas Haney Secondary. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Hockey

by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

The local junior B hockey team had an even weekend, winning their first game on Friday, but losing their second Jan. 9. It appeared as if it could have been a 4-0 win for the Flames against the North Delta Devils, as they were four up going into the third period Friday. “Tyler did well in net,” said Flames coach Tavis Eaton, adding that he was pleased with the result overall (final 4-2) and said the players did well. The hockey gods did not smile so favourably on the Flames a second time, when they lost to the Grandview Steelers 5-0. “We looked like a disinterested team,” said Eaton. It was an emotionally charged game Saturday, and there were two penalties for game misconduct handed out in the third period for both teams. “We lost our temper a few times,” admitted Eaton. “But these things happen.” He said that for this weekend his team just needs to get back on the right track. “It we play the way we can, we should do well,” he said. The Flames play Mission tonight (Friday), 7:30 p.m. at Planet Ice, and then the Port Moody Black Panthers in Port Moody on Sunday.

New housing regulations tabled

All new apartments and condos could soon fall under a new building code.

At Tuesday’s council in committee meeting in Pitt Meadows, councillors favoured a proposed building code change. They passed a report to the next stage

to include Adaptable Housing Regulations in to the City’s zoning regulations. The regulations will apply to all new multiple-family buildings (apartments and condos) that share a common corridor and elevator, and include measures such as wider doors and at least one ‘minimally’ accessible bathroom.

GEORGE ROBERT CLEAL

Gertrude 'Gertie' (nee Klassen)

Jan. 21, 1921 – Jan. 3, 2011

A loving father, a devoted husband, a gentle soul, George Robert Cleal quietly passed away Jan 3, 2011 just shy of his 90th birthday. Committed to core values instilled by his father, Dad believed in fair play, hard work, honoring your commitment and being loyal. Known for his kindness and politeness, Dad led us, his sons, Larry, Warren and Tim by example. His words, often not lengthy, were words you could trust. While growing up he was our provider, our teacher and our friend. We were blessed to have Dad as a role model. Born in Balcarres, Saskatchewan Jan 21, 1921, Dad was the only child of Arthur and Jane Cleal. Gramps managed the only grain elevator in Balcarres. Dad was an accomplished athlete excelling in hockey, baseball and curling. Musically he learned to play by ear and could play keyboards, drums, most wind instruments and had a wonderful voice. He began his working career in a small grocery store in Balcarres and finished it as Vice-President with Overwaitea Foods in BC. He was a WW11 veteran and was a member of Rotary for many years. Dad married our Mom, Julia Barbara Huber on March 14, 1942 and they were married for nearly 50 loving years. Dad’s career took our family to Abbotsford, Cloverdale, Mission and Maple Ridge before Dad retired in 1978. Settling in White Rock in 1981, they spent eight loving years there before Mom sadly passed away from cancer in 1989 at the age of 70. Dad entered into marriage for the second time on December 15, 1990 to Gladys Bouchard and welcomed three more sons, one daughter and their families. Gladys passed away in 2006. Dad is survived by a large extended family. His sons, Larry (Bev, grandchildren Jamie and Crystal), Warren ( Debbie), granddaughter Alyssa, John and great grandchildren Kiana and Makai), Tim and his partner Julian, and step-sons David, Robert, Paul and step-daughter Katherine and all their families. Thank you for the loving care provided Dad by the staff at Allan Hogg Pavillion in White Rock. Donations may be made to the Pavilion or the Canadian Cancer Fund if desired. A private service will be held for Dad.

Who was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 10, 1912, passed away on January 9th, 2011 at McKenney Creek Hospice surrounded by friends and family. She is survived by children Don & Patty Klassen and Bob & Donna Vasko, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Celebration of Life to be held on Monday, January 17, 2011 at 2pm at Garden Hill Funeral Chapel, 11765 - 224th Street, Maple Ridge. Expressions of sympathy can be made at www.gardenhill.ca

Cancer June 21-July 22: A long month of opportunity and opposition ends Thursday. You probably feel you didn’t accomplish much, as this period began in confusion. But you have Sunday (planning) and Monday to Wednesday (action) to grab some last chance(s). Remember, independence, no; interdependence, yes – for now. Thursday begins a month of secrets, research (detective work) large finances, investments, lifestyle, health and sexual changes and commitments. And Saturday kicks off a period, through early June, of tremendous career and prestige benefits – both trends (change and career luck) combine soon! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Sunday’s happy, optimistic, friendly. But heavy chores still weigh on you through Wednesday. Just plunge in, get ’em done. DON’T start a new work project Monday or before 5 p.m. Tuesday. A month of fresh horizons (and emotional fresh air) arrives Wednesday night. You’ll experience opposition and opportunity – both intense. So be diplomatic yet eager. Saturday begins a four-month phase of great luck in far travel, higher education, publishing, legal affairs, cultural venues and love. You might fall in love and marry – swiftly! Focus on money, spending, earning Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Be ambitious Sunday, or mingle with higher-ups. A month of romance and creativity draws to a close by midweek. Take care with friends, hopes, plans Monday to Tuesday suppertime – pursue all these afterward. Retreat, rest and contemplate your future Wednesday afternoon to Friday morning. Despite your uncertainty about job performance/stability, all looks fine. You begin a month of work and health issues Thursday. More importantly, you enter a four-month phase of great luck in investments, sexual liaisons, life changes and commitments, Saturday. (A clue Wednesday eve.)

KING ALBERT COURT

415 Westview St, Coq

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Remain ambitious to Wednesday – last-minute advances (especially Sunday and Wednesday) can be strong ones. You might have to struggle with foundational, home or family issues, though. The government, head office or an institution could offer splendid help Wednesday. (Take power naps Monday/Tuesday.) A month of social joys, friends, entertainment, flirtation (that can build to deep love) optimism and joie de vivre begins Thursday! And four months of great good luck starts Saturday, in love, travel, law, education. You’re on a roll! But settle into chores Friday eve, Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: A long, mellow period draws to a close. You might face – but more likely your close friends, associates face – a pulling apart between key people Monday/Tuesday. (E.g., your friends split up.) This is mostly gradual, deep: but look for clues, and seek early “accommodations,” as this is a decade-long trend. You might have to choose between love and casual friendship. Rest, tend to home matters Wednesday eve to Friday morn. A month of ambition begins Thursday (but first rest, to Friday). Romance, pleasure visit Friday eve, Saturday. Saturday to June 4, “head office” is your friend. Gemini May 21-June 20: Continue to chase facts/secrets, investments and sensual desires to Wednesday noon. You energy’s high Sunday. Buy nothing (nor invest) Monday nor Tuesday before 5 p.m. (PST). Thursday begins a month of gentle love, understanding, legal solutions, far travel, higher education or intellectual pursuits and publishing. Be curious Wednesday to Friday, ask questions. Friday eve and Saturday bring rest, domestic affairs, quietude. But Saturday also starts four months of social expansion, new friends, flirtations, wish fulfilment and happiness! And these four months kick off another 92!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Sunday’s wise, mellow. Your ambition surges Monday to Wednesday, but take care with this Monday. Tuesday has obstacles to overcome (involving home or career foundations) but you can succeed – especially after supper and into Wednesday lunchtime. Thursday brings a month of celebration, optimism, flirtation, entertainment and social joys! Even better, Saturday starts a four-month phase of lucky opportunities, especially in marriage, love and relocation. Enjoy yourself WednesdayFriday, but Friday eve and this weekend, retreat, rest and contemplate: significant times loom! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: A restless, social month is ending. Thursday starts four weeks of quiet contemplation, physical sluggishness and domestic affairs. Sink into these, rest and refresh your soul, as February to June will bring a huge pile of work. Sunday’s mysterious; you might sense someone’s secret. This is a good, stable day to invest, work out a budget, or hold a private conversation. Monday to Wednesday is mellow, but holds barriers and problems before 5 p.m. (PST) Tuesday – and succeeds after that, especially in legal, educational and romantic arenas. Be ambitious Wednesday eve to Friday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You can find out where you stand with a crucial person Sunday. Financial and sexual obstacles arise Monday to dusk Tuesday; solutions appear after this, through Wednesday mid-day. A mellow, understanding mood steals over you Wednesday eve to Friday – love, intellectual pursuits thrive. Thursday starts a month of travel and communications, errands, emails, details, paperwork. More exciting, Saturday begins four months of great luck in romance, creative projects, far travel, with children and speculative projects. You’ll be offered happiness! Be ambitious Friday eve, Saturday.

Jan. 16 - Jan. 22 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Tackle chores Sunday: pick the ones that will free you for more ambitious projects later. Relationships confront you Monday to Wednesday. These contain some opposition and frustrations through twilight Tuesday, then generate healing, solutions – and love – after that. Chase mysteries Wednesday eve to Friday morning – research, invest, study lifestyle changes, get your health diagnosed. Thursday’s fortunate. This day begins a month of money – buy, sell, seek more lucrative clients. Saturday begins a four-month stretch of great luck in real estate, home, family and security issues. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Romance – of a quiet, stable kind – or kids or creative pleasures – call Sunday. Be careful with chores Monday to Tuesday twilight. The danger: wasted effort. Tasks speed swiftly to conclusions Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday ends a month of weariness, solitude and obligations, as it starts four weeks of surging energy, heightened charisma and effective action! Start important projects soon, ask favours, show yourself off! (But first be diplomatic Thursday/Friday, and “sense secrets” Friday/Saturday.) Saturday begins four months of travel, talk and much paperwork. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Spend Sunday at home or in nature – all is restful, steady, quietly inspiring. Take care with romance, creative projects and gambles Monday to Tuesday dusk – these are fine, even lucky, then to Wednesday mid-day. (An 18-month “dead end” in romantic and creative zones ends this March.) Thursday begins a month of obligations, lowered energy and dealings with “head office.” Now to late February, rest, be charitable, contemplate and make plans for the future. Work smart, not hard. Saturday starts a four-month period of money luck – maybe big money luck! All things weave together. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Right from start to finish we were impressed with the professional, courteous manner of everyone on your team. We were called each day to confirm the time the installers would arrive and were continually called to make sure we were happy and if there was anything you could do for us.
