Cougar sightings continue

Neighbours in a rural area where a horse was killed by a cougar have mixed feelings about wildlife. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Residents in northeast Maple Ridge are on high alert this week, as more cougar sightings are reported. The most recent cougar spotting occurred at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, reported Ridge Meadows RCMP. This time, police attended a property on 264th Street, escorting the owner from her barn back to her house after she heard noise she believed to be a cougar. Officers didn’t see the cougar, but police are asking residents in the area of the Whispering Falls subdivision to be very attentive. In the meantime, people living in a rural Maple Ridge area – where a number of cougar attacks and sight-

Tony Scorgie spoke about wildlife encounters in his rural Maple Ridge neighbourhood. ings have recently taken place – say wildlife is common in the area. “A lot of coyotes, a lot of bears,” said Tony Scorgie, who has lived in the 25700 block of 128th Street since 1972. “I haven’t seen any cougars.” He said he recently saw a conservation officer up the road and “heard a bunch of gunshots, so I figured something was going on.” Scorgie lives with his girlfriend and his two teenaged sons stay with him on the weekends. He said the attacks

that took place over 10 days, which have claimed the lives of seven farm animals and on Sunday left one horse dead, are concerning. “It’s not a good thing, that’s for sure,” he said. He said there isn’t much you can do, save for being aware of your surroundings. The B.C. Conservation Officer Services and Ridge Meadows RCMP are continuing their efforts to locate the cougar. If or when they do, Scorgie hopes the animal will be trapped and relocated. Peter Christensen lives a couple of properties down from Scorgie and said cougars are a part of the neighbourhood. “We’re not too concerned about it,” said Christensen, who has lived there since 1974. “We’ve lost dogs and cats and chickens, and our neighbours have lost goats, but that’s part of life out here. If you can’t live with that you shouldn’t be here, I guess.”

It took several hours for emergency crews to just dislodge a tractor-trailer wedged onto the front of a freight locomotive during a crash in Ruskin late Wednesday afternoon. And the collision between the semi and train forced a few hundred West Coast Express passengers on the last two eastbound trains of the night to take a different mode of transportation for the final leg of their Wednesday night’s commute. According to TransLink, arrangements were made to bus passengers from the Port Haney station to the Mission station, with the tracks cleared in time for Thursday morning’s commute. The crash occurred at about 5 p.m., when an eastbound grain train was approaching the Maple Ridge-Mission border, parallel to the Lougheed Highway. It struck the trailer of a semi that was straddling the tracks, said Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail spokesman Mike LoVecchio. There was no one injured in the crash, confirmed CP Rail and the Mission RCMP. Early indications are that the safety arms and bells that alert people of an oncoming train were activated and functioning at the Ruskin crossing, giving anyone in the area ample warning, he said. “So far as we know, they were functioning at the time,” LoVecchio said, adding that it’s still unknown if the driver was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. This is a level crossing where the driveway that’s used to access a cedar mill sandwiched between the tracks and the Fraser River. “It is a spot where we frequently have these incidents,” he said. “It has all the precautions in place; there’s no reason to stop across the tracks.” He used the crash as another opportunity to drill home a safety message to all drivers. “Look, listen, and live,” he said. “Before any driver proceeds onto a level crossing, they should stop, check both ways to make sure no trains are coming, before crossing… It’s common sense.”

Error led to inmate death

A nurse, who should not have been administering methadone, supplied a dose that killed a 32year-old inmate at a Maple Ridge prison, Postmedia Network has learned. Details of the unidentified man’s death in October 2010 are revealed in a confidential review by BC Corrections, which was released to Postmedia under freedom of information law. And as a result of this staff errors in the death at Fraser Regional Correctional Centre, BC Corrections has completed a review of its

methadone program and is making changes. “Our response in this case was lacking,” Marnie Mayhew of BC Corrections said. “The best thing we can do is look at the mistakes and take action to ensure they do not happen again.” The dead man, believed to be a heroin addict, was not registered to receive methadone and his prison profile contained a medical alert “never to be housed with a [methadone] program inmate,” the review stated. But the alert was “not adhered to” – and shortly before his death he was transferred to a cell with an

inmate on the methadone program. The review suggests the 32-yearold man tricked a nurse – only on her second day of orientation – and got his cellmate’s dose of methadone by presenting fake ID. An especially troubling review shows prison staff suspected the wrong inmate had been given methadone, but guards did not report concerns to supervisors or attempt to confirm their suspicions. And when emergency care was finally given to the man by prison staff, the care was flawed. Mayhew said the report “speaks for itself” and she would not comment on specific findings.

• 7:08 a.m. A nurse on her second shift and only supposed to be “shadowing” a regular nurse improperly administers methadone treatment to inmates. • 7:29 a.m. The nurse and staff helpers perform an identity check on a 32-yearold male as required, before he ingests a methadone dose. But the man, who is not on the methadone program, presents a fake picture identification card, believed to belong to his cellmate who is on the program. He is given a dose of methadone that turns out to be lethal. • 7:31 a.m. The man is seen via closed circuit TV appearing hyperactive, pacing around the room, talking and laughing. During the methadone distribution process, his unit remains unlocked, which is contrary to policy. • Unit staff discuss suspicions that the wrong inmate has received methadone treatment, but they don’t investigate or report concerns to supervisors. • From 8:18 a.m. to 9:26 a.m. The man is supposed to be locked in his cell after the methadone dose but, instead, is allowed to enter the yard with other inmates. • 11:06 a.m. Lunch trays arrive. The man is seen on his top bunk facing the wall. Staff don’t recall if he ate. • 12:23 p.m. The man and his cellmate are asked to attend medical checkups. The man doesn’t respond, “and the staff reported snoring-like sounds.” • Dinner arrives at 4:15 p.m. and the man does not eat it, according to his cellmate. • 6:36 p.m. An officer unsuccessfully attempts to rouse the man. • Health care arrives at 6:43 p.m., finding the man “cold, pale and cyanotic, with no pulse or breathing.” There is a delay in starting CPR. • 6:53 to 7:08 p.m. CPR is administered. He is given a number of doses of Narcan [an antidote to opiate drug overdoses]. Paramedics arrive and find no sign of life. The man is pronounced dead at 7:08 p.m.

Second elderly pedestrian dies this week by Amy Judd

Two elderly Maple Ridge men are dead this week – both struck down by cars on Dewdney Trunk Road. The first incident happened back on Dec. 20, in Webster’s Corners. A 73-year-old Maple Ridge man was struck in the 25500 block of Dewdney Trunk Road while attempting to cross the road. He was rushed to hospital.

He died in hospital Tuesday, succumbing to his injuries, said RCMP Insp. Derren Lench. “This is a very tragic event, and I pass on our condolences to the victim’s family,” Lench said. No charges have been laid in that accident. In the meantime, a 63-year-old man was run down at 222nd Street and Dewdney Trunk Road last Saturday morning. He was pronounced dead at the hospital later that day. The pickup truck that struck

this man downtown was driven by a 59-year-old Maple Ridge woman. No charges have yet been laid in that incident, either. “Our traffic services [unit] is investigating the matter in the hopes these type of incidents do not repeat themselves or are reduced,” Lench said. Ridge Meadows RCMP are not releasing the name of either victim, but are asking anyone who witnessed either incident to contact police at 604-463-6251.

Thankfully it wasn’t raining Wednesday morning, when the entire staff of Pitt Meadows’ City hall gathered outside for roll call after going through their first-ever earthquake drill. As part of the Great B.C. Shakeout, Pitt Meadows assistant fire chief Brad Perrie led the staff through a simulated earthquake, had them muster outside, and then debriefed them in the conference room. “It seemed very orderly,” said Perrie. “Evacuation took three minutes and three seconds.” Human resources and communications officer Lorna Jones was “injured” in the drill, and first aid attendants had to assess her injuries and determine how to move her to a safe place. “She had a few more injuries than I was expecting,” said Perrie. “I was expecting a bump on the head, but apparently the rock that fell on her head, stayed there,” he smiled. According to the B.C. Shakeout website, more than 460,000 British Columbians took part in the earthquake drill on Wednesday, with 238,071 in the southwest. Later in the day, Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean, Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin, and school board chair Ken Clarkson battled it

And despite such devastating personal loss, Gagnon said she is doing a lot better now. “I work now and I went to counselling about everything that happened to my missing sister,” she explained. She also has a grandson she calls “the light of my life,” and is so proud of Janet’s daughter, who is now married with a criminology diploma. “She’s beautiful like her mom was,” said Gagnon.

Ridge buys 14 downtown properties Council has bought a chunk of land between the two malls for future residential development. by Maria Rantanen

The District of Maple Ridge spent $3.7 million to buy 14 lots in the downtown core for future development. While Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said the District isn’t in the development properties, council saw this as an opportunity to help in the revitalization of the downtown core. “It’s one way to take a little bit of control of our destiny,” Daykin said. He described the property that’s between Haney Place and Valley Fair malls as a “strategic chunk of dirt” in the District. The properties were bought using existing reserve funds. Thirteen of the properties are zoned residential and one is zoned commercial. In the Official Community Plan, however, the residential

core incentive program. The purchase was announced at Tuesday evening’s council meeting, something that council unanimously wanted to happen. A common theme that comes up is why the

municipality can’t develop the downtown, Daykin said, but he pointed out the municipality can’t force anyone to develop private property. “The vision is for a vibrant, exciting downtown,” Daykin said at the

meeting. He added that the purchase was “forward thinking” and that council is “motivated” to see development downtown. Councillor Al Hogarth said he brought the issue to council a few months ago, and although it cost him a client, he said Maple Ridge will be better off buying the property. There are about a dozen houses on the lots purchased by the District, and a decision was made to wait till after Christmas to announce the purchase. Councillor Linda King said council has been talking about downtown revitalizatin for years, and this began with the construction of the ACT, library and office tower. This development, however, is “not going to happen overnight,” King said. According to realtor Dave Telep, the properties were sold to Decker Development Corp. in 2006 for $4.5 million. He said the real estate community was “blindsided” by the District’s purchase, adding he doesn’t think the properties are viable.

Shake up your plans You can’t blame people. After all, who really wants to think that they’ll have to deal with a cataclysmic earthquake? But pretending that the big one won’t happen in our lifetime is not a good plan. Every time there is a quake nearby, or a tremor in the area, folks are jolted into action. Flashlights, water containers, shovels, hand-crank radios – we run out and buy them, put them in a container in the garage, and forget about them… until the next time we are scared by the moving earth. We suspect there’s a lot of old rubber bins stuffed with earthquake gear buried underneath camping gear, sports gear, and summer tires in local garages. If the big one hits, chances are that those earthquake kits will be next to impossible to find. How many readers have a 16-inch wrench on hand to turn off the gas? Or how many have enough bottled water for their family to survive a week, without having to replenish their fresh water supply? And how about your beloved pets? They’re members of the family, too. Do you have enough food on hand to see them through a serious break in our regular supply chain? Don’t forget a reasonable stash of cash. Severe electrical interruptions will put paid – at least for a short duration – to our “cashless society.” Is your hot water tank strapped to the wall, not just supported by a few copper tubes that run in and out of it? And is that big mirror in the bedroom going to stay put when the whole house shakes? Does your family have a plan that includes a place to meet if the big one hits when everyone is at school, work, or shopping? Cellphones may not work as everyone is trying to call everyone else, so don’t count on that approach. If we’ve added to your anxiety a bit… well, that’s not a bad thing. This week we experienced the Great British Columbia ShakeOut, and if that includes getting shaken up figuratively to do something, it’s a lot better now than getting shaken up literally later – and having no plan to fall back on.

‘Honour’ not deserved Dear editor,

Trustee Dave Rempel’s words of praise for the former secretary-treasurer [Bursary book causes friction, Jan. 21, TIMES] are offensive and insulting to employees who were disrespected and demoralized for years. Other than the two or three remaining managers, whom he personally hired, you would be hard pressed to find too many willing to honour Dave Rempel or revere this man’s School board trustee name with a bursary. This individual negotiated himself an excellent wage/ benefit package, which included longterm disability insurance, so why doesn’t Trustee Rempel start honouring and

respecting the taxpayers of this community by telling them why the man was paid out the hefty sum of $230,000? We got rid of most of the previous dysfunctional school trustees, including Councillor Cheryl Ashlie, so she should keep her nose out of school district business. I’m sure the current trustees have a very good reason for removing Trustees Rempel and Kathie Cheryl Ashlie Ward from the Ridge Maple Ridge councillor Meadows Education Foundation board. If Ashlie is trying to use her position as councillor to promote her personal friends, then it just makes me wonder.

Dear editor,

Let me get this right: Mr. Verwoerd [Reality check on ant-HST campaign, Sept. 28 Letters, TIMES] feels we should accept the HST even though the government deceived us. This government has deceived us so many times, by out and out lies, by omission. To suggest that it was all right to do that, because all parties would do the same, is wrong. The fact is, the Liberals did deceive us and were caught. The people of British Columbia deserve better from a government. As for the 700,000 signatures dwindling to 550,000 after Elections BC scrutinizing the signature sheets for house numbers in the wrong box, etc., if you looked at the forms you would have seen how easy it was to put a number in the wrong box. Elections BC was ever watchful for any mistake and that is how it should be. Anyway, 750,000 was the number of people who voted this government in. Out of three million voters this government got 750,000 votes. That means that 2.25 million either voted against the government, did not vote by choice, or spoiled their vote. Nobody likes new taxes, especially the people who can least afford it. Verwoerd says we should accept this deception. Sound to me like he thinks we are far too indulgent. But, of course, we are not as indulgent as our government that voted for a huge increase in pay and a marvelous pension – when at the same time telling us how hard it was to find money for services and for the more unfortunate in this province. Reality check, is the anti-HST movement is trying to make this government realize that they are the government of all the people, not just pals of big business. The HST was brought in to make it easier for businesses, so the ordinary taxpayer is subsidizing businesses. Now we hear that for the past decade or more we have been subsidizing casinos to the tune of $400 million dollars. How much does the taxpayer have to give to successful businesses? Something is wrong with this picture.

I live in Pitt Meadows, right on the Alouette River – behind the dike – and we find animals, cats and puppy dogs dumped on the dike. At the moment, I have a cat here that was at the neigbour’s door. It looked very bad, and I took it to the vet. Well it has a tattoo, so we were able to find out where it came from. It is 13 years old, and is from Coquitlam. I live in Pitt Meadows, so she didn’t just show up here. The former owners were not happy when they were contacted, and do not want it back. Please people, if you cannot or do not want to keep your animals, take it somewhere where it will be looked after. Housecats and dogs do not know how to look after themselves.

In a letter to the editor [Hatred root of shooting, Jan. 25 Letters, TIMES] John McKenzie writes about, “deceit of the right-wing elements in American politics. And of course now they invite and embrace the Chinese premier when there’s a chance of making a buck in trading relations.” We must keep our political parties straight. It is a Democratic government under President Barack Obama who welcomed President Hu Jintau of China with a 21-gun salute and the Chinese National anthem. President Obama wore a red tie and Michelle Obama was in red gloves. It was the first state visit of a Chinese official since 1997. Contingents of all military personnel were in evidence. As well, while most everyone agrees “politics should be conducted with respect and dignity,” Canada is no paragon of ethicality.

Rave suspects back next week Three people charged in connection with a Pitt Meadows sexual assault will be in and out of court. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

A Maple Ridge teenager charged in connection with the Pitt rave last fall was in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court again Wednesday. The 16-year-old, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, will be back in court on Feb. 16 for arraignment. He is charged with producing and distributing child pornography in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a young girl last September.

Police also revealed earlier this month that the young girl left school because of subsequent bullying. In the meantime, two other men have also been charged in the case, and they’re also in and out of the courts. Dennis John Allen Warrington, 19, of Langley, has been charged with producing and distributing child pornography. He made his second court appearance on Jan. 19 and will re-appear again in Port Coquitlam on Feb. 3 to fix a date for trial. On the same day, Colton Ashton McMorris, 18 of Maple Ridge, will also appear in court to fix a date for his trial. He is charged with sexual assault. None of the suspects are in custody.

A power surge in August kept the Finlayson family of four cooking their meals with an electric grill and a toaster for months. Several of the Maple Ridge family’s appliances broke on Aug. 19 during a power surge caused by a faulty hydro crossbar that caught fire, but BC Hydro claims it’s not their responsibility to fully

compensate customers for such incidents. BC Hydro has offered to pay the Finlaysons’ home insurance deductible for appliances destroyed in a power surge, but they don’t think their insurance should pay if it wasn’t their fault. With their stove top and microwave not working, making dinner was a challenge – the family cooked with an electric frying pan, a toaster and a barbecue. It took an hour to make pasta as Finlayson had to put a pot on top of her electric frying pan. “I’m hoping there’s some way I can make BC Hydro responsible,” Finlayson said.

To protect against power surges, Peter Hendriks of Alouette Electric said a surge protector should be installed by a qualified electrician onto a home’s electric panel. To further protect one’s home, power bars certified by the Canadian Standards Association or other certifying agencies should be used for all electronics. Shari Lidstone, manager of customer service with BC Hydro, said “an unfortunate set of circumstances” were the apparent cause of the damage, which the Crown corporation “sincerely” regrets. The Pitt Meadows Lions Club was chartered with seventeen members by Lions Clubs International on May 7, 1951. In the sixty year history, we have been there to help people of our community in need. Financial assistance was not always the order of those early years of the Pitt Meadows Lions Club, sometimes it was labour that was required and the members were always there to help. There are many stories to be told of just helping our neighbour by assisting with repairs to a shed or a fence or helping with painting.

It all started just over a decade ago when he needed a ruler to read because his eyes couldn’t focus on the words. From there, after dozens of tests to rule out everything from a brain tumor to cancer, doctors finally diagnosed Al Coppin with Alzheimer’s disease. He has now just turned 70, and his family wants to help others affected by this disease and dementia by raising money and banding together for the Investors Group Walk for Memories this Sunday, Jan. 30. “I don’t think people are aware how many people have been touched by [Alzheimer’s],” said Al’s son Steve. “When you hear the word Alzheimer’s, you don’t realize what that is going to take away from your family,” said his sister Laurie.

Naturally, when the Coppins first heard the news of the diagnosis, they struggled with acceptance. “If you didn’t admit that he was getting worse,” said daughter Shannon, “then he wasn’t actually going to get worse.” “If we can give any family an understanding, it’s that it’s so much more progressive than we thought,” added Laurie. Al’s wife Sharon is his primary caregiver, and they, along with their children and grandchildren, are grateful to have found a support network in the Alzheimer Society of B.C. It was difficult at the beginning however, because even Al felt he was in the wrong place.

“At first you just look at all the poor people and you think ‘I’m not like them,’” he said. “At first it was ‘I don’t belong with them,’” said Sharon, “but he did.” Shannon said her dad has his good and bad days, and the family are hoping he will have a good day this Sunday on the walk. The fourth in a movie series at the ACT is all about the relationship between fathers and their sons.

The Golden Ears Movie Series – GEMS – continues on Monday evening with the fourth film in the series, a Vancouver production titled Fathers & Sons. The film is a comedic exploration of a group of men and their relationships with their fathers. Nick Sartore, communications manager with the ACT, said the arts council is trying to build up a loyal audience following with the film series. The plan is to continue the series next year, he added. There will be two more films after Fathers & Sons – Mao’s Last Dancer on Feb. 28, and Coco Before Chanel on March 28.

Fathers & Sons is a movie all about the relationship between fathers and sons. In the movie, a middle-aged Jewish man meets his father for the first time at the funeral of his mother, and a South Asian accountant introduces his white fiancé to his father – a gay, Bollywood choreographer. A recently bankrupted Wall Street broker has come home to borrow money from his music teacher father, and four brothers gather at the paternal home to pay their last respects and to collect their inheritance. The movie is directed, produced and written by Carl Bessai whose award winning feature films have won international critical acclaim at numerous festivals including Sundance, Berlin, and Toronto. Fathers & Sons shows at the ACT on Monday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $11 a piece or $27 for three movies.

Canadian comedian Roman Danylo said one of the best ways to get to know the “dirt” on any community, is to talk to the local cab drivers. He will be coming to Maple Ridge to probe our cabbies to get the most information he can in order to stage the perfect CSI-style mystery, all involving landmarks and points of interest in our community. For example, someone is murdered at Haney House and escapes in a kayak stolen from Ayla Canoe Rentals. Danylo, who has appeared in many TV shows, including five seasons on CTV and Spike TV’s Comedy Inc., will be performing at the ACT this month alongside comedians Nathan Clark and Denise Jones. “You don’t need to know anything about CSI to see our show,” he explained. Many might know Danylo from his YouTube video The David Caruso School of Acting, which has almost 250,000 hits. From that popularity, Danylo designed the show ‘CSI: Your Town’ when he was touring last year. “For me there’s nothing better than travelling around to all these towns that have these really awesome theatres,” he said. The first part of the show consists of sketches, and the second revolves around the CSI theme. Audience input makes it fresh and new for everyone. “Variety is the key,” said Danylo. “In this day and age, if you’re anything like me, you need variety to keep you interested.” Danylo has been performing for 23 years, and although he said he doesn’t really think of himself as funny, his success in the comedy circuit says otherwise. He has also appeared in CTV’s Corner Gas, and CBC’s Just For Laughs and Made in Canada. “I haven’t really had a job since I was 18,” he laughed. “Which is an issue when you hit 40 and you think, ‘I’ve got no skills.’” He will be able to showcase his comedic skills, however, when he dons the baggy suit and trademark sunglasses of David Caruso, with what he hopes are hilarious results.

The four elementary schools in Pitt Meadows will get a lesson in consumerism and garbage when DreamRider Theatre premieres its new environmental play Zero Heroes. It will be performed at Pitt Meadows elementaries – Pitt Meadows, Davie Jones, Highland Park, and Edith McDermott – on Feb. 10 and 11. The play will be shown to 20,000 kids in the Lower Mainland this year. Zero Heroes is a new play about stuff – solid waste and consumerism. Ian Gschwind is the actor and co-artistic director, and Vanessa LeBourdais is the other co-artistic director. Both are from Port Moody. In DreamRider Theatre’s trademark zany and fun style, the new play teaches elementary school kids about positive

actions they can take to reduce their waste, buy less stuff, and keep everything within a cycle of re-use. The evil Dr. Carbon is determined to cover the planet in garbage. Can Esmeralda Superspy Planet Protector and her sidekick Goober stop him before it’s too late? They’ll need the kids’ help. In this funny musical play, children learn a new way of thinking about everything they use and buy, then pass that inspiration on to families and communities. DreamRider Theatre is Greater Vancouver’s Environmental Education Theatre Company, started by veteran theatre artists Ian Gschwind and Vanessa LeBourdais in 1998, to create and perform environmentally themed plays for Lower Mainland elementary schools. Funding for the project was provided by Canada Council for the Arts, Real Estate Foundation of BC, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and The Hamber Foundation, as well as the municipalities of Vancouver, Richmond, Delta, Pitt Meadows, and New Westminster.

Ten-year-old Jaiden works hard at his TIMES paper route every week, and he usually gets some assistance from his seven-year-old sister Kailey. However, last month Jaiden had a special flyer delivery to complete and Kailey wasn’t sure if she wanted to go with him. She’s glad she did, because the young Pitt Meadows residents won a Nintendo Wii game console from the TIMES after

He said his two children have been enjoying their so-called Christmas gift ever since, mostly playing Wii Sports and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. “They told all their friends at school about it,” said Jonathan. Jaiden is still delivering papers on his route, and has even started his own bank account. “He really takes pride in what he’s doing,” said his dad. “Although I try to remind him that you don’t get to win a big prize every time, but just to do a good job.”

In the growing season, a twice-monthly feed of balanced, liquid fertilizer should help.

Trio returns for senior year Three of the Pitt Meadows Marauders basketball team couldn’t resist the lure of the court for their final season.

Two weeks ago Pitt Meadows basketball coach Rich Goulet said three of his senior players were finally starting to feel like part of the team, after deciding not to play last year. He now hopes that feeling only continues to grow. Erwin Van Ramshorst, Brandon Severinski, and Luke Gillespie, all play in the forward position, and they all missed the game and the team when they ‘stayed on the bench’ in Grade 11. “Especially watching the seniors play last year,” said Gillespie. He also plays floor lacrosse and picking a lacrosse game over basketball in Grade 10, got him kicked off the Marauders. “I had to make a solid commitment to basketball this year,” he said. Severinski was still involved in some way, as he was the team’s manager, a role that he gladly gave up to get back on the court once more. “I quit because I thought I couldn’t handle school and basketball,” said Van Ramshorst, who wants to study engineering in university, “but I found that I could handle school so I came back.” It was at the Air Show 2010 tournament, hosted by Pitt two weekends ago, that Van Ramshorst not only won a $250 scholarship, but Goulet described the event as a “kind of coming of age” for the three seniors. He said that Gillespie is starting games now, and that the whole team together may just be playing the best defence in the province. All three players said the hardest part about playing again, was getting back in shape and getting

used to the challenging schedule of basketball and school work. The team has mostly league games and tournaments left before they participate in the B.C. tournament starting March 15. “Being with the guys is a lot of fun,” said Van Ramshorst. “When you want to play basketball, you can’t play by yourself,” he said. None of them think that they’ll go on to play basketball in university, but Severinski said he appreciates the team now, because it gives him something to do with his otherwise free time. The Marauders have been doing well so far this season and are on track to go far in their league. “Our team was really underestimated before we started,” said Gillespie.

“I don’t think we’ve lost to anyone ranked below us,” added Severinski. All three agreed that they have to focus as a team to win their upcoming games, and to keep playing hard. “Mostly when we’ve lost games, it’s because we’ve had mental lapses during the game,” said Van Ramshorst. They finished fourth at the VC Emerald senior boys tournament last weekend and Goulet said that in their first game against Kelowna, Pitt struggled in the first quarter. However, they fought back with some full court pressure and some improved three-point shooting in the final quarter to get within four of the final score. They went into the tournament

ranked fourth in the province, and Goulet has high hopes for his team this year. In December he told the TIMES, [Marauders keeping eye on the prize, Dec. 7, 2010, TIMES], “touch wood, we are going to be fairly healthy this year. The last couple of years, from a health point of view, have not been great, and to win a championship, everything’s got to go right. There is too much competition at this level.” The senior boys’ next game is tonight against White Rock Christian Academy. They then get a little break before playing their next league game against Riverside on Jan. 31. Their schedule is hectic in February leading up to their two final tournaments in March.

In collaborating on a long-term player development strategy, three Lower Mainland soccer clubs have endorsed two local clubs with the goal of creating a new league. Last week Pitt Meadows United Soccer and Golden Ears United clubs received backing from Mission Soccer club, Central City Breakers of Surrey and

Harling awed the crowd with his skills on the double trampoline at Haney Place Mall during a show put on by Quantum Gymnastics last Saturday. The show was part of National Gymnastics Week, which ran from Jan. 18 to 24, and aimed to celebrate all the positive aspects of gymnastics. Meanwhile, threeyear-old Miaja (below) yelled a big “ta-da” to a supportive crowd of families and patrons at Haney Place Mall during the show. And advanced class gymnasts Vanessa Pogue, 15, and Lilla Guylas, 13, (bottom right) performed tumbling tricks as a duo during the event.
