An artist’s rendition shows the new Pitt Meadows seniors complex that’s been three years in the making.
Pitt Meadows
New seniors digs proceed After an almost three-year delay, the seniors of Pitt Meadows are finally going to get a new housing facility. by Amy Judd
ajudd@mrtimes.com
The site of a proposed seniors complex has remained empty for the past three years. But on Tuesday night council announced plans are finally going ahead. “We have a space crunch for the seniors,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean. “They’re increasingly more active and they certainly need more space.” They are going to get that in the form of a housing complex, which will contain 102 units, including 71 independent and 31 assisted living suites, along with a 9,530square-foot public seniors centre. Pat De Luca, president of Allegro Properties Inc., started the project that fronts 190A Street before. But due to economic difficulties, he had to pull out. MacLean said De Luca should be given credit for not giving up. And now, with a new partnership, De Luca is back on board and excited about the development. “About five months ago we approached the City and opened up discussions about the project. The mayor, and staff, and council were very receptive,” De Luca said, noting they have now applied for development and building permits. They are expected to break ground again within the next 30 to 60 days. Allegro met with parks and leisure services, and said they, along with the Ridge Meadows Seniors Centre, are happy. Paddy Godbehere, the manager for the Ridge Meadows Seniors Society, said that local seniors “have been working for a long time to have this come about, so there is definitely excitement.”

Kids engaging in native culture Medicine wheels have many purposes and meanings, according to a local Aboriginal support worker. by Troy Landreville
tlandreville@mrtimes.com
The wheels of First Nations cultural education in School District 42 continue to turn. Maple Ridge Elementary is one of two district schools in which medicine wheels have helped generate more Aboriginal awareness among students. Students used a hula hoop, yarn, and feathers to replicate traditional First Nation medicine wheels made by Aboriginal people. Doweling was added to the interior of the hula hoop to create four sections. The goal is to have medicine wheels at every school in the district, said SD42 principal of Aboriginal education Doug Hoey, “It’s the first step for creating awareness,” said Hoey, who added that, thanks to the efforts of Aboriginal support workers, students’ knowledge of First Nations gets “better and better every year.” “I think it’s important for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students to learn about the strong Aboriginal history and culture we have in this area,” Hoey said. During a recent presentation, Maple Ridge Elementary students volunteered to speak to their peers about the medicine wheels they helped construct. For First Nations people, a medicine wheel is many things on many various levels, and has many different meanings and uses. All First Nations have their own way of interpreting a medicine wheel. For Aboriginal support worker Lisa Adair, it’s a symbol of spirituality and teaches about Aboriginal culture. A medicine wheel has many facets, Adair explained. They include the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west), the life cycle from infancy to adolescence, and the four moon phases, among many other things. “With the four seasons, sometimes there are six, including Mother Earth

Recovery home on cusp of expanding
Innervisions Recovery is hoping What’s OnLine to break ground on May 1 growing its 24-room facility by Hotel tax pondered a further 16 beds.
Not having a hotel tax puts Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows at a “competitive disadvantage,” according to Sandy Blue, who handles economic initiatives for the District of Maple Ridge. A two per cent hotel tax, which most municipalities already have, would allow Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to market their tourism opportunities. All the hoteliers in the area would have to agree to the tax before it could be implemented. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Twenty women were sitting in a drug and alcohol recovery session at Hannah House on Tuesday morning when their session was interrupted by a group from G&F Financial delivering an oversized cheque for $15,000. Applause broke out among the women and rang through the building, because they knew Hannah House was now one step closer to breaking ground on its expansion, which will allow up to 92 more women per year to get clean and sober. G&F Financial handed over the cheque to Billy Weselowski, executive director of Innervisions Recovery, which runs three recovery programs – Hannah House in Maple Ridge and two treatment centres in the Tri-Cities. “Billy’s the one with the passion and I think that’s what inspires us,” said Peter Kobayashi, a branch manager with G&F Financial who there for Tuesday’s presentation. Hannah House has been in its present location for six years, and Innervisions wants to add 16 beds to the recovery home for women. “It’s quite valuable to have citizens and businesses step up and

treatment centres for women. It was his wife who pushed him to open a women’s facility. Hannah House is the only treatment centre for women in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and the TriCities area. Currently the average wait time is 25 to 30 days to get into treatment at Hannah House. The additional 16 beds would allow 72 to 96 more women annually to get help for their addictions – currently they have room for 24 women at a time. Seventy-three per cent of people who come to Hannah House complete the program, Weselowski said. Innervisions Recovery has an abstinence-based program because, Weselowski said, “without the sobriety everything else is based on a house of cards.” “We’re pretty militant about being clean and sober,” he said. An addict’s attitude is “I want as much as I can handle, and I want you to be responsible for it,” Weselowski said. Many of the people working for Innervisions are former addicts, like Weselowski, “who have recovered from the horrors of addiction.” Nothing is wasted at Hannah House, Weselowski said, and many of the improvements, for example, the wood flooring and furniture, have come from grants and donations. Weselowski said the society is hoping to get the balance of what they still need – between $40,000 and $50,000 – to break ground on the expansion on May 1.
Cougar not returning to kill site Conservation officers fear scavenging coyotes are affecting cougar traps. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

ter of time until the cougar comes back, but with coyotes scavenging the horse carcass used to lure and trap the cougar, it could be a while. “The cougar doesn’t have the chance to drag it off,” said McFadden, explaining that is what the cats like to do with their kills so that they can cover it and protect it from other wildlife. The carcass of a miniature horse has been left surrounded by ‘soft-catch’ leg-hold traps, which are humane devices that use rubber bands to hold the animal and not break the skin. He said they have received reports of two sightings in the general vicinity of 264th Street. “People perhaps let their imagination get the better of them,” he said. They received one last Sunday night, when a young woman called them and said that someone had told her driving by in a car that they had seen a cougar, and that she should return home. “It’s hard to verify,” Smith said.

Then a call came through Monday night from someone who said they saw something that was “brindle coloured.” However, Smith said they believe that person may have seen a coyote instead as they get a lot of calls of that nature. The cougar has killed a goat, two other miniature horses, a donkey and two sheep on the property at 128th Avenue and 264th Street. Conservation officers will not bring out bloodhounds to try and track the cougar until they have a more definitive sighting.

Andrea Walker is going to drive by Albion Elementary on Sunday night to check out the situation – she expects a lineup of anxious parents to start forming that evening. But if there isn’t one, she’ll be back at 4 a.m. on Monday morning to guarantee a space in kindergarten for her daughter Ashley. When Walker found out this week from a neighbour who already has a child in the school that there are more children wanting to register than there are spaces, she starting panicking. “I think they should figure out a way to accommodate all the kids in the catchment,” Walker said. Albion principal Ron Lanzarotta confirmed the enrolment projection for the school this year is 86, and the cap on students is 66. Last year, the school went through the same thing, and all students were accommodated.

Maria Rantanen/TIMES
Andrea Walker has heard that there are more students than spaces expected for kindergarten at Albion Elementary this fall. But he acknowledged how difficult it is for parents when the expectation is to get their child into the neighbourhood school. “We know how stressful it is for parents,” he said. “We feel badly.” In the three years he’s been principal of the school, they’ve always been able to figure out a way to get all kindergarten students in. While the number of students expected to register is 86, often there are families who want to go to the all-year Kanaka Creek, or other district programs. When the family moved to Albion more than three years ago, Walker
assumed her daughter would go to the local elementary school. “I always thought if you’re in the catchment, you’d get a spot.” Albion Elementary will offer full-day kindergarten this year to all its five year olds as will every other school in the district. Last year about half of the local schools offered full-day kindergarten. The school district owns a school site on 104th Avenue, but it has to wait for the Ministry of Education to provide the capital funding to build the school.

Tradition echoes in ACT lobby Audience members can either listen to the Celtic sessions or bring an instrument and join in the playing. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Nigel Tucker wants to bring a bit of Irish pub atmosphere to Maple Ridge with his Celtic sessions at the ACT. Since September musicians have been meeting monthly in the lobby of the ACT playing traditional British music — audience members are invited to just pull up a chair and listen in. “The hard and fast rule is people must enjoy themselves,” Tucker said. The musicians use traditional instruments such as the Irish flute and tin whistle, but Tucker would like more mandolins, banjos and fiddles added to the mix.
“I’d like (the audience) to enjoy all aspects of traditional music ... without having to travel one and a half hours to great sessions in Vancouver,” he said. “My intent is to expose people to traditional British and Canadian music and have them enjoy it,” Tucker said. Tucker said his eventual hope is the sessions will turn into something similar to what takes place in Irish pubs. The Celtic sessions are part of the arts council’s after-hours program, and Tucker is contracted by them to lead the sessions. The free Celtic Sessions with Nigel Tucker and friends will be held on Feb. 8, March 8 and April 12 in the lobby of the ACT from 7 to 9 p.m. Everyone is invited to come listen and request a song, or to bring their own instruments if they wish to participate. For more information about the Celtic sessions, contact Nigel Tucker at 604-4660274.

Our View
Community must take responsibility Let’s get it done this time. The land is available, the commitment has returned… and as Pitt Meadows Mayor Don McLean astutely noted, the seniors’ needs keep growing. This time, the senior living complex proposed for 190A Street, behind the Family Recreation Centre, needs to be seen through to completion. The commitment needs to be complete. As a society, we quickly and easily proclaim our respect – even reverence – for the seniors in our communities. We easily extol their virtues… as long as they don’t cost money. We’re quick to point out that these are the people who built our community. These are the people who nurtured us through our youth, established us as productive members of the community. These are the people who, through their jobs, their perseverance, their dedication, their commitment, built the relative wealth that most of us enjoy today. But now their most productive years – in economic terms – are over. The job of creating wealth has passed from their hands to ours. And it’s a shame that, the moment our wealth is threatened, the seniors are among the first to feel the pinch. We need to recognize the value of seniors in continuing to create and build community, if not always in economic terms, then certainly by the social contributions that they afford us through their active participation with family, friends, and society as a whole. And the community they built needs to take responsibility for the seniors’ continued contributions that enrich us all. We must ensure that, this time, the seniors living project – or one like it – continues to completion, to meet the needs of those who have met the needs of the community for so many years. Partnerships between public and private enterprises are all well and good – and they can benefit all parties concerned – but this time, if for whatever reason, the private end of the deal lets the community down, then the community must step forward and make arrangements necessary to ensure that our senior members’ needs are met. This time, let’s get it done. – B.G.

Tourism
Hotel tax seen as backward Dear editor,
Once again, count on Maple Ridge Councillor Craig Speirs to be the one that doesn’t get it. If hotel developers and those who run hotels are now looking at Maple Ridge to build a hotel, it is precisely because Maple Ridge doesn’t currently have a hotel tax. The idea that the District imposes a tax, and then uses the money to promote tourism and new business is backwards. If a large group is planning a meeting or retreat, or a family is planning a wedding, then find out they will be charged an extra two per cent, do you think that will make a difference in their final decision? The reason the tourism board was spun
off as private enterprise was to reduce the tax burden overall. Nowhere else in Canada does one tax get eliminated only to get replaced by another with no net gain to consumers or residents. Perhaps this is why Coun. Speirs has his eye on Ottawa these days, and not focused on Maple Ridge. If we want to promote business and tourism in Maple Ridge, we need to send a clear message we’re open for business. Maple Ridge is the only municipality in the Fraser Valley that doesn’t charge a tax on hotel rooms. Vote for change November 2011.

Reaction
Conservatives owed the credit Dear editor,
In your editorial piece [Promise about holding power, Jan. 25 Opinion, The TIMES], you made a few good points, however the basic thrust of the piece was negated by major errors. Firstly, it was the Harper Conservatives who brought about the ”most progressive, democratic campaign finance laws in the world” that we have today. No other party would have had the courage to do so. It is the Liberals who have financed their elec-
tion wins from large corporate donations and large private donors, while the NDP have depended upon the labour movement for its financial strength. The Conservative Party, on the other hand, is financed almost entirely by small individual donations from everyday Canadians. You were entirely incorrect when you stated that the subsidy goes to candidates; it in fact goes to party headquarters, the candidates/MPs see nothing of it, and so your assumption that it is an
incentive for MPs to do what the electors want is totally lost. The subsidy pays for the ridiculous ads we are now watching on TV – what a waste. The sooner this waste is stopped the better. With the incredible tax savings on political donations, 75 per cent on the first $500, there is no need for further taxpayer support. Why should Canadians pay millions of dollars annually to the Bloc Quebecois?

Dear editor,
Mr. [MLA Randy] Kamp claims that Mr. [Prime Minister Stephen] Harper does not hide from the press and from time to time, he does take off-the-cuff questions from the media. He, according to Mr. Kamp, is apparently too focused on governing to spend time with the media, and get this “public relations exercises.” First Mr. Kamp, pre-approved questions from some favoured media hack does not constitute making himself available to the public press. That is what they call propaganda. He also mentions that he is not sure what the opposition is talking about on other issues. I am sure that is true at least, as I have found that Mr. Kamp is quite uninformed about most of the questions I have asked him about. A recent example: I asked him about my having to pay HST on registered therapeutic massage, and he informed me that had nothing to do with the federal government. Well Mr. Kamp, quite the contrary. It
has everything to do with the federal government. B.C. RMTs have the highest professional standards in Canada, probably in North America, but it was not exempt from the GST and thus now is not exempt from the HST. The very reason this medical anomaly exists is that years ago the federal government deemed there had to be four regulated provinces to be exempt from the GST. And guess what happened, as soon as the massage associations got those four provinces regulated the feds moved the goal post to five provinces. And do you want to bet that when the RMTs get the fifth province, it will be moved to six provinces – to qualify for exemption. The BC Liberals had a perfect chance to rectify the injustice of taxing a registered medical treatment when implementing the HST, but also chose not to exempt RMT from HST. It is my opinion that Mr. Kamp, as our elected representative, is not aware of a lot of the things he should not only be aware of, but responsible for.

will spend the rest of her life. She says, “By nightfall, I was the proud but overwhelmed owner of one of Vancouver Island’s most historic farms.” It could not have fallen into better hands. Anny Scoones respects its past and the history of its 10 red-roofed buildings, and does all in her power to maintain and improve them. Whenever she can, she invites others to share a piece of her home. Over time, the big red barn, a magnificent heritage structure, becomes the venue for numerous community and cultural events, seating more than 200 people. She finds space for a young student to keep his rats and mice; for two young men to build their boats; for straw-hatted Gavin, the herb and salad gardener “to work the earth” and share his bounty; and for the Healthy Harvest Co-op gardeners, who sell their lush produce and flowers at local markets. Anny Scoones is an elected councillor for the District of North Saanich. She cares about the protection of the environment, raises rare breeds of livestock and grows heirloom produce but, most of all, from early morning till late at night, she lovingly runs her sanctuary for sick and abandoned animals.

The Golden Ears Bridge has become an instant connection from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to Langley, which is good news for the Langley Jr. Thunder’s recruiting efforts. Recently at the Langley Events Centre, the third-year B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League franchise signed three players from Ridge Meadows: James Baker, Sam Weselowski, and Lyndon Knuttila. They join fellow Ridge Meadows product Reegan Comeault, who was an impact player in 2010, his first full season with the Jr. Thunder after making six appearances with the squad in 2009. Comeault, the first pick overall at the ’09 Midget free-agent lacrosse draft, recorded a team-leading 33 goals (including 17 on the powerplay) and 73 points in 20 games.
Comeault is looking forward to the 2011 campaign. “We are pretty young, so we are looking to improve this year and turn out better,” he said. “We’ve still got three more years together with pretty much the same core group.” Comeault didn’t hesitate to join the Jr. Thunder after being selected at the top of the draft table two years ago. “I talked to the management and they were really good to me throughout the process,” he said. “I got an opportunity to play junior last year when, if I went to a lot of other places, I wouldn’t have, so I think it helped me on a personal level.” Jr. Thunder general manager, co-governor, and vice-president of lacrosse operations Brock Rose said players of Comeault’s ilk possess the character necessary to be difference-makers. “They don’t want a participation pin, they want to change a franchise,” Rose said. “I’m looking for that attitude where ‘I want to get this done’.” With the Midget draft being nixed

With a community of world-class talent in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, local residents have the chance to experience that culture at the Spirit of Wood Festival. Robert Campbell, a local musician and the festival’s MC, said that due to the increased funding from the province and the Maple Ridge Mountain Festival, it really helps to broaden the depth of the annual show. The festival explores the importance of our local forests and the connection we all have to wood. “Sometimes we get disassociated with where we are, where we come from,” Campbell said. “Without the culture and the spirit of things we wouldn’t have a lot to build our lives on.” The event kicks off on Saturday night with a wood art showcase and sale, followed by a musical and dance production at the ACT. he women of Westcoast Harmony Chorus are accustomed to seeing some blushing on Valentine’s Day. That’s the day the region’s barbershop singing group for women fans out across the Lower Mainland in groups of four to deliver singing Valentine’s. Westcoast Harmony is accepting bookings for Monday, Feb. 14 and has five quartets lined up for that day. Blushing is the typical reaction when the group finds its quarry and begins singing. They go to the intended recipient no matter where that person may be, based on information provided by the person who booked them. “I’ve had to wear a hard hat,” said singer Trudy Zonneveld, adding she’s also performed in a butcher shop. During the day, they are typically booked to go to workplaces and in the evening, the mood changes. “Then you start to get more romantic dinners,” she explained. Typically other people in the office or construction site or restaurant circle around for the Singing Valentine and sometimes join in the singing. “It is a wonderful gift,” noted the singer who has been with Westcoast Harmony for three decades. Probably the most unusual booking she’s been on was to Simon Fraser University’s wrestling team practice. They

Cancer June 21-July 22: The emphasis lies on mysteries, sex, intimacy, research, large finances, lifestyle, crucial health matters, commitment – anything that can change your life deeply (usually another person is involved). This month, these changes tend to work through your ambitions, career, or status situations. E.g., a “status” wedding changes your life and finances. Or a career opportunity demands a commitment (of $?) from you, and will change your life. (Your career is marked by splendid luck this winter/spring.) Charge ahead SundayWednesday (a happy day!). Retreat, rest, plan Friday eve, Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships, relocation, dealings with the public, fame, negotiations, litigation, agreements, opportunities and opposition – these fill February. This week, especially Sunday to Tuesday, emphasizes the source of this winter/spring’s good luck: legal, loving, intellectual, international and cultural scenes. Work, health and your duties or ambitions might interfere – these are heading for a deep change and “rebirth.” (It centres on Wednesday, but could occur anytime in February.) Chase your ambitions Wednesday, but avoid conflict, aggression Thursday. Joy, friends, Friday/Saturday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Work’s essential – get it done. Your efforts, duties (and perhaps health) are tied up with an influence of deep change this month, especially this Sunday to Tuesday. This can manifest as: a sexual affair with a co-worker, investment in your job or tools/machinery, or changes brought about by your job or health – all are agents of change – beneficial change. Money goes better than romance right now. A gentle love floats in Wednesday, but irritation dissipates affection Thursday. (DON’T invest or make big changes this day.) Be ambitious Friday eve, Saturday – success accompanies you!

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Lie low, rest Sunday morning. This afternoon to Tuesday your energy and charisma surge – a bit of big luck could come, maybe involving home, relationships or money. (However, don’t push authorities.) Chase money Wednesday to Friday noon – but take care with purchases. Your hopes and your money resources (earnings level, savings) are in conflict – find reality. You might sense, or be offered, a career or status “partnership.” It’s subtle, you have to be intuitive or watch clues. Friday eve, Saturday bring errands, casual friends, curiosity and variety – read, write, talk. Taurus April 20-May 20: The emphasis lies on ambition, career, prestige relationships, your reputation and status. Elements of fantasy/deception, creative ideas and impatient bosses crowd this zone. If you deal with government, large corporations, institutions or charitable agencies, “impatient bosses” will be less of a factor. Be willing, quick to respond – and keep your sense of humour (especially Thursday!). Use Sunday eve through Tuesday for research and planning – get plenty of rest. Your energy surges Wednesday to Friday: display your skills, work hard. Excellent purchases Friday eve, Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The accent lies on gentle love, compassion, broad vision, law, higher education, publishing, far travel and cultural rituals. February 5/6’s sober, realistic love wish is almost sure to come true. But a “sweet confection” love wish, involving beauty, and perhaps involving a Libra or Taurus, is less likely to come true. (Some “destiny” lies in wait for this one – either a wipe-out, or a deep rebirth.) In other ways, Sunday to Tuesday brings wish fulfillment, social delights and happiness. Rest, lie low Wednesday/Thursday. You shine, succeed and attract others, Friday eve, Saturday!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The emphasis is on romance, creativity, beauty, luck, risk, pleasure, charming kids, sports/games. You’re riding a winning streak – recognize and use it, seize on openings, issue invitations, respond, speak what’s in your heart, etc. Take a chance! The source of your January-to-June luck is highlighted Sunday afternoon through Tuesday: relationships, relocation, negotiation, agreements and contracts, litigation, co-operation. Clue: everything in the first sentence will aid these; but security, property, family will “fight” them. These, security, property, etc., are about to transform. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Be gentle on the home front – spend energy on renovations, repairs, rather than causing family friction. Think back and ahead: decide who should stay in your life, who should leave. Your choices will affect your health and your duties, for good or ill. Your work will expand for the next four months – clues arrive Sunday to Tuesday. Quiet discussions and administrative contacts benefit your efforts, but more adventurous communications (especially of love or competition) will erect barriers to work success – take heed Thursday. Mysteries, intimacy and finances succeed Friday eve, Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Romance, creativity and a risk-taking mood steal upon you Sunday afternoon to Tuesday – take that risk! But realize money and confidence aid romance/creativity more than wishful thinking does. You might have some puzzles to work out around these: romance, pleasure, money and work.Work definitely faces you Wednesday (success) and Thursday (when work interferes with romance’s communications, or might be dangerous – practise safety). Exciting meetings (and some a bit more stable, boring, with other generations) arrive Friday eve/Saturday: love’s possible! All month, money’s lucky.

Feb. 6 - Feb. 12 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Chase money, buy/ sell, seek lucrative clients – but most importantly (as Sunday to Tuesday might whisper to you) pursue the connection between security and money: e.g., buy or sell real estate, start a retirement fund, put away funds for your children’s education, purchase insurance, spend on new business premises or to expand your territory. Ending unprofitable or stale situations is also a wise move financially. Romance and pleasure call Wednesday (successfully) and Thursday (not – beware “wasted money”). Tackle chores Friday eve, Saturday: you’re ambitious, productive! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness are at a peak! Start important projects, seek favours, call in markers, show yourself in person. You’re very communicative, curious and travel-prone this month – these are emphasized Sunday to Tuesday. A Libra and a Gemini are attracted – the Libran is very serious. A Leo wants to spar – and join. Attend to domestic matters, family and security, property and “territory” Wednesday to Friday afternoon. Don’t be overbearing Thursday p.m. Romance, creative surges and the urge to take a big chance arrive Friday eve, Saturday – yes, plunge in! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Rest, lie low, contemplate, plan. Be charitable, spiritual. Attend to obligations, committee and administrative chores. (Do taxes?) You will want to be free of these in two weeks when your energy and money luck will soar upward. Let much of your planning involve finances. Money, earnings and possession are highlighted Sunday p.m. through Tuesday – let realism rule fantasy and wishful thinking. Your wishes, however, do have a destined road ahead – something is wiped out or born this week; it changes your future. Careful with money Thursday. Deep rest, good family Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Just wanted to thank Team Diverse, and the outstanding installers working with Diverse Flooring. Right from start to finish we were impressed with the professional, courteous manner of everyone on your team. We were called each day to confirm the time the installers would arrive and were continually called to make sure we were happy and if there was anything you could do for us. The end results are fantastic; we love all our new flooring and would highly recommend Diverse Flooring! Enthusiastically
