Development

Council narrows down Albion options

Monday’s workshop will feature a discussion mainly on two scenarios. Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Steve Wynnyk and his brother were for the longest time the “biggest opponents” of development of the Albion Flats, but because of development around them, they have been “squeezed out,” according to Wynnyk. The family has owned about 40 acres of farmland in the area now under consideration for development since 1948. But with the surrounding sports fields and the residential

areas above them, their land floods three to five times a year, making it unsuitable for farming, Wynnyk said. Because the family can’t farm the land, and because of the growing population, Wynnyk said it’s time to let it go for development. “It’s a natural progression based on population,” Wynnyk said. “As more people come in, it takes more to service (them).” Maple Ridge council decided at Tuesday’s council meeting not to forward the four Albion Flats concepts developed by the consultant to the Agricultural Land Commission for comment, but rather to take two of the scenarios – two and four – and work on those at Monday’s council

workshop meeting. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said after the meeting he was surprised council decided on those two plans because he felt they were the most “aggressive.” However, council also wants to incorporate elements from the other scenarios, he added. Daykin thought council would have accepted the offer from the Agricultural Land Commission to forward all four original concept plans to them for comment, an offer he would have favoured. The ALC is a provincial body with a mandate to protect agricultural land, Daykin said. “They have some pretty wideranging authority,” he said. Wynnyk said his fam-

ily has been working with SmartCentres, which owns land adjacent to theirs, but they have not had any discussions about selling to the company that develops shopping malls. If it is excluded from the agricultural land reserve, the family would like to develop it themselves to “get the highest and best use for the land,” he said. The Wynnyks used to grown corn for feed on their land on the Albion Flats, but that’s not been possible for the last few years because of flooding. “It’s progressively getting worse every year,” he said. At Tuesday’s meeting, Councillor Judy Dueck said council isn’t envisioning a “parking lot experience” while

developing the Albion Flats, and she wouldn’t support that kind of development. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie said she was concerned about what the burden to the taxpayer would be for some of the scenarios developed by the consultant. Ashlie said that scenario one doesn’t deliver on retail, and three would mean an investment of “huge public dollars.” Councillor Craig Speirs said he doesn’t want a “traffic magnet,” and that everyone who wants shopping now will later be complaining about traffic. Ashlie pointed out people are used to sitting in traffic looking for shopping in Coquitlam.

Local horse shelter always at capacity J&M Acres Horse Rescue in Maple Ridge survives solely on donations and fundraisers and has saved hundreds of horses over the past 15 years. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Every time Julie MacMillan has to leave some horses behind at an auction that are destined for the slaughter house, it makes her sick, but she comforts herself knowing that she is saving as many as she can from that fate. “I get calls every day,” she said from people wanting her to take their horses. “If every horse person in Canada adopted a horse every year, there still wouldn’t be enough homes.” At J&M Acres it feels as if good

karma hangs in the air, and and crying loudly. MacMillan strives to look beyond “You get a little bit hardened,” the stories of animal abuse and she said smiling, “but you can’t neglect, to the happy endings of resist something licking your horses finding new and loving face.” homes. This all started for MacMillan, She currently has 10 horses at who is also a full-time bartender the rescue centre, at the Jolly Coachman and that is her pub, when she was at “If every horse person in capacity, but with an auction 15 years ago, Canada adopted a horse every and saw a semi truck two more comyear, there still wouldn’t be ing soon she said pull out filled with she tries to make horses on their way to enough homes.” space for 12 or 13. slaughter. One horse, Ozzy, needs some special TLC, as he was a racehorse, then was adopted by someone else but was so badly neglected by never having shelter, that MacMillan knows it will be a while before he can leave J&M Acres. She said her work with horses and other rescue animals “feeds her soul.” They are 100 per cent non-profit and could not survive without private donations. “People are so good,” she said. Park has gone to the dogs Some residents near the Volker Park off-leash dog park in Maple Ridge are not too happy with the look and structure of the area. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Dogs barking, torn-up grass, and loss of a neighbourhood park, are just a few of the concerns on the minds of residents adjacent to Volker Park in west Maple Ridge, and they want their issues heard. Charles Gale, one of the residents who lives next to the park, said that in the past people have always had their dogs off-leash without any fencing and he would like the park “given back to the neighbourhood.” “We’ve lost all our privacy since this dog park was established,” said Gale. His bedroom window is close to the entrance to the park and he said he and his wife are often woken up by barking dogs. “I don’t get to sleep in anymore,” he said. The off-leash dog park was established in spring 2010, and David Boag, the director of parks and facilities, said it was quite an involved process to choose where to locate the dog parks – there are now five in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows – and that Volker Park was an attractive location because it has been an unofficial dog park for a long time. He said that a bylaw prohibits dogs being at large in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and that is why these areas were established for dogs to run off-leash. A steering committee that was formed to help determine the locations and the

structure of the parks did talk to the residents in the area before it was constructed said Boag. One of the concerns that was raised was that residents asked for the size of the park to be reduced so that kids could still play and people could still walk through the park outside of the fence. “When we fence these things,” said Boag, “that means kids can still kick a ball, and people can still walk through the park.” Gale used to own a dog, and some of his neighbours who have submitted letters to the Parks and Leisure Services own dogs, so they say the dogs are not the issue, even if they are barking. It is the way the dog park has changed the look and neighbourhood feel of Volker Park, especially as people come from all over to use the area. “The fence doesn’t have a lot of meaning, except for those who can’t control their dogs,” said Gale. Boag said that he has heard some positive feedback from people who use Volker Park, but said people should be cognisant of those in the neighbourhood when they come to use the area. At the North Bonson dog park, the Parks and Leisure Services Commission have recently decided to move the fence back by 100 feet from Blakely Road, after residents lobbied for the change in boundary. “It will help create a bit of a buffer,” said Boag. “That’s a fair comment.” The commission met on Thursday night, and one of the agenda items was to discuss the concerns surrounding the dog park. Boag said he will be given direction from the commission as to how to proceed further with this issue.

Families bond with books

Parents went to school on Feb. 8, to learn how to help their children become better readers. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Adults visiting St. Patrick’s School took part in a hands-on workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 8, with the focus on raising the next generation of readers. St. Patrick’s parents attended classes with their primary children during the school’s first Literary Afternoon. Parent-and-child teams learned new ideas about how to read together. St. Patrick’s principal Irene Wihak said the workshop supports parents in helping their children learn to read and appreciate literature, in collaboration with the school and its teachers. “We need children to be able to read in order to problem solve and make sense

of the world around them,” Wihak said. “It [teaching children to read] requires teamwork. We can’t do it by ourselves; parents can’t necessarily do it by themselves, so the more we can work together as a team the more successful the children are going to be, and the more they’ll like reading… and the more empowered they’ll be.” In this digital age, Wihak said children need to be able to read the Internet and make sense of that information. “Because of technology nowadays, it can grab those kids who might not pick up an actual book, but if they can pick up an iPad and still appreciate books and stories that way, that technology is available as well.” Ultimately, it comes down to the basic art of communication, Wihak explained: “Reading is the beginning of that which then leads to written communication. It’s just a great way, also, to decompress and enjoy somebody else’s experiences vicariously through the word on the page.”

Investigation

Abandoned puppy dies

Peanut, who was found at a bus stop, has died. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

She never had a chance at life. At just one day old, she was put out in the cold, in a shoebox wrapped in a garbage bag at a bus stop on 207th Street, and despite efforts to save her, the little black and white puppy Peanut died Tuesday morning. She had gone home from Dewdney Animal Hospital on Monday afternoon

with Maple Ridge SPCA manager Mark Vosper and seemed to be doing okay at first. “In the early hours [of the morning] she didn’t want to take much milk,” said Vosper, “and then she was gone.” He said that the incision done on the umbilicus (belly button) was too close to the skin, and she had a pocket of pus that was attached to her umbilical vein. That coupled with the likelihood that she didn’t get to suckle within the first day or two, said Vosper, caused an infec-

tion and her death. “When she was brought in she was already hypothermic and she had seizures,” he added. BC SPCA are now on the case. Anyone with information can call the Maple Ridge SPCA at 604-463-9511.

Crime

Bucker murder needs witnesses The 2008 death of a 21-year-old in Mission has a Maple Ridge link. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Police know some individuals from Maple Ridge were at the New Year’s Eve party on Dec. 31, 2008 when Payton Booker ‘Dexter’ Buckner died. They are now urging those people, along with others from Mission and Coquitlam, to come forward and help police with their investigation.

“We know that some of the people that were at the party live in Maple Ridge,” said RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr of IHIT, “and have intimate knowledge of what happened, and have chosen not to be forthcoming with the police.” “To protect someone that has committed a crime as senseless as this one is unacceptable,” he said. During a recent review a number of additional tasks were identified and followed up, and that information has resulted in significant advancements in the investigation.

The South Bonson Community Centre will look like a building site for only a few more months.

Centre will be ready in summer The South Bonson Community Centre is slated to be completed in August. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Bookings are already being accepted, and there is still a lot of work to go, but the South Bonson Community Centre is on pace to be finished this summer. “All the windows are in and we’re going to be connecting to Hydro within two to three weeks,” said Pitt Meadows’ recreation manager Don Cramb. He gave a presentation to Pitt Meadows’ council in committee in January and said construction was about five days behind schedule, and it is still

progressing at that pace. Cramb said the weather, especially the heavy rains recently, has slowed down the work on the roof. He said the roof covering will be completed in the next few weeks, and many of the mechanical systems are in place, but are not hooked up yet. “We’ve started accepting tentative bookings,” he said, “and there are three or four groups interested.” The City of Pitt Meadows has booked its Christmas party there and parks and leisure has booked its September commission meeting there as well. The total projected cost of the project is $5,475,849, which includes the design and planning, construction management, construction, and building equipment.

Cruelty has no excuses

Creative

“There’s loads of vets in town, everyone knows the SPCA, so there’s no excuse, is there?” Those words from Maple Ridge SPCA manager Mark Vosper cut right to the heart of it. Vosper was talking about the daysold puppy who stole the hearts of everyone who met her, who read about her, who put their faith fervently in a veterinarian’s first encouraging words that suggested Peanut might survive, despite the odds that had been stacked against her. He was talking about the heartless individual who had left Peanut to die in a garbage plastic bag. But he was also talking to the many others who have committed similar sins against defenceless animals. Far too many such sins are committed far too often in our supposedly “civilized” society. Cases like Peanut’s grabs tearful attention because it’s so easy for almost anyone to see that puppies are naturally so gosh-darned cute. And the 100 huskies killed in a postOlympics economic down-sizing capture headlines because of the obvious inhumanity involved. But similar acts of violence and cruelty go on every day. One of the most obvious – and most common – is that of people who leave loyal friends behind in farmers’ fields, “trusting” that the kind farmer will take care of the “beloved” pet they can no longer take care of, for whatever reason. In the real world, few will survive. Some of the luckier cats or dogs will become coyote food, but many will die of starvation in an unfamiliar landscape, pining without understanding for the “friend” who abandoned them. There is no excuse for any of it. There are rational, humane alternatives for those who can no longer care for their pets. The Maple Ridge shelter in Albion is open and fully operational during construction of the new shelter. People who care are there to intercede on behalf of the animals. There is no excuse. Any acts of cruelty to animals should be reported to the Maple Ridge SPCA at 604-463-9511. – B.G.

Hammond

Zone opposition appreciated Dear editor, Many thanks to Mayor Don MacLean and Councillors John Becker and Doug Bing for doing the right thing and opposing the rezoning on Hammond Road, which passed with the votes of Councillors Bruce Bell, Tracy Miyashita, Gwen O’Connell, and Deb Walters. The larger lots on the south side of Hammond Road, between Blakely and South Bonson and the community, should not be abused by muddle-headed thinking. They are located on a very high traffic route that should not be bastardized by small-lot development. There is no rear-lane access to properties along Hammond Road, yet four councillors thought it made sense to put four new homes on midget lots, and at the T-intersection of North Bonson and Hammond Road no less. Obviously not enough was learned from the subdivision of larger lots into two on the north side of Hammond Road in the 19300 block.

At that time, we conducted traffic counts and had the support of all but one property owner in opposition. Council ignored us – the people who live on Hammond Road. Today we live with more driveways, more vehicles needing to park along and turn onto and off Pitt Meadows’ busiest single-family street. My neighbours across the street can most often not see cyclists and higherspeed westbound traffic as they leave their driveways, because the adjacent “small lot” houses need to park several vehicles on Hammond Road. We knew this could happen and said so. Council did not listen. I’m paying attention, and I hope others are too: planning, zoning, and rezoning require very careful consideration. Hammond Road – the road to Hammond – is not just any other street. If some councillors can’t respect the differences, they should be replaced. F.G. Higgs, Pitt Meadows

Animal welfare

Puppy received maximum effort Dear editor, How wonderful it was to see Dr. Adrian Walton in the paper [Day-old puppy abandoned in shoebox, Feb. 8, The TIMES]. Dr. Walton cares so much for all the animals that come under his care. Though it is sad that tiny Peanut did not make it,

I have no doubt that Dr. Walton did all he could to save the life of the little pup. Our family went through something similar 2½ years ago when our newly purchased Chihuahua puppy got extremely ill with coccidia at just 12 weeks old. Dr. Walton and his staff

Huskies’ deaths haunting Dear editor,

I can’t remember the last time a photo has upset me as much as one of the 100 innocent husky dogs that had outlived their usefulness and were tortured and senselessly slaughtered last April. I cannot get that picture out of my head. I feel a lot of emotions: anger, disgust, and even shame that I belong to a species that would commit such a cruel act. There have always been pathetic, weak monsters who will do anything for money, or just simply do whatever they are told, just to keep a job, but there simply is no excuse or reason for what was done to these beautiful, innocent creatures. Everyone, from the top down, involved with this heinous outrage should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Getting rewarded by WorkSafeBC for having no sense of right or wrong is just plain wrong. The laws should be changed so this kind of tragedy can never happen again. I can only hope that those responsible for this nightmare are haunted for the rest of their lives by what they have done. It is going to be a quite a while to put this senseless tragedy out of my mind.

treated her at the clinic, and when things looked bad, he even decided to take Lily home to keep a close eye on her condition and to cuddle her and keep her warm all night. He took the time to call us at 11:30 at night to let us know how she was doing. Things did not look good, and we expected the worst. When the call came in the morning, we got fantastic news. He (and his wife) had stayed up all night with Lily, and with his constant care and love, Dr. Walton was able to pull her though one of the worst cases of coccidia he had seen. We are grateful to all of his staff as well, because the care continued at the clinic the next day, as they all took turns carrying our Lily like a baby kangaroo in a pouch. We were fortunate. Today Lily is happy and healthy, thanks to Dr Walton and his staff. As sad as it is that Peanut did not make it, we know there will be others who will, thanks to Dr. Walton and his wonderful staff at Dewdney Animal Hospital. Holly Richardson, Maple Ridge

Education

Evaluate schools from the inside Dear editor, Some people are thinking about meritbased pay for teachers [Always room to improve: MLA, Feb. 4, The TIMES]. Consider this: the only way to measure teacher performance is by measuring student performance. And this will lead to the same messy data that measuring schools produces. The school report card is inaccurate because the tool used to evaluate every school in the province is too imprecise.

For example, it does not calibrate the effect that private tutors have on the scores of some schools. If people want to improve schools, they should consider a new way of looking at education. Go to the schools, rather than evaluating them from a remote location via spreadsheets. Read Ken Dryden’s book In School: Our kids, our teachers, our classrooms for some new ideas about methodology. Maple Ridge residents Bill and Kelly Nagy want what any parent wants: for their child to be safe. But the safety of their 18-year-old daughter Brianne relies in part on a prohibitively expensive customized chair, something the family are struggling to get government funding for because of her age. Brianne, affectionately called Breezy by her parents for her love of the wind, has Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental

disorder that almost exclusively affects girls. She cannot speak, is fed overnight through a tube in her stomach, and requires 24-hour care. Brianne experiences violent seizures that have been increasing in severity as she gets older, sometimes more than fifty in a day. While Brianne’s current chair has thick padding to help prevent injury, it does not have restraints that can prevent her from slipping out of the chair and onto the ground. “She’s even got a seatbelt, but she can fall out of it,” said Kelly. “[The chair] is cushioned but it’s like a big cove, so she can slide right out of it.”

Friends celebrate Year of the Rabbit The food bank hopes to raise $8,000 at its fundraiser this Saturday. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

It’s the Year of the Rabbit — a lucky year hopefully for the Friends In Need Food Bank as well. To celebrate Chinese New Year and to raise money, the food bank is holding a fundraiser this Saturday with live entertainment and food from Enjoy Gardens, a restaurant in Pitt Meadows that gave the food bank “a really skookum deal,” said Friends In Need executive director Joanne Olson. Last year the event raised $4,000 for the Friends In Need Food Bank after the proceeds were split with the Pitt Meadows Lions. This year the food bank will be the sole beneficiary of the fundraiser, and

Olson hopes they will get about $8,000 in profit. Although the Pitt Meadows Lions aren’t benefitting from the event, they’ve been helping by working the phones, Olson said. Eight thousand dollars would pay for about 133 hampers — the amount the Pitt Meadows location gives out in one month. This year the community was extremely generous to the food bank at Christmas, Olson said, and she’s optimistic the food they have stockpiled will last until June — or at least until May. Compared to last year, when the food ran out in March, this is turning into a more stable year for the food bank and Olson said she hopes donations are back to their normal level. The Friends In Need Food Bank is holding its Chinese New Year’s fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall. There will be silent and live auctions, and the

Local school production set to be a B.C. first The Putnam County Spelling Bee will come to life on the Meadowridge School Theatre stage this month. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

The dramatics, personalities, and inner workings of a smalltown spelling bee will unfold in the Meadowridge School Theatre next week. The Maple Ridge School is staging the first full-scale British Columbia school production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee from Wednesday, Feb. 16 to Saturday, Feb. 19. A preview matinee is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 15. Rhys Clarke will direct the play, featuring Faran Mahboubi as William Barfeé, Sarah Dugdale as Olive Ostrovsky, and Harrison Collett as the ill-fated Chip Tolentino. Other casting includes Jerry Yang as Leaf Coneybear and Maddison Ebner as Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre. Set in a dank middle-school auditorium during a regional spelling bee, this story is a comedy about pubescence, with wonderful music and vivid characters, Clarke said. “It’s about early teen angst being played out in a very, very funny way,” said Clarke, who

In the lobby before the show, interested audience members will fill out an information sheet. As the show begins, one of the

judges calls the spellers onto the stage and they sit amongst the actors and prepare to come to the microphone and spell. “If they misspell, they are sent back to the audience with great fanfare and a juice box,” Clarke said. Faran Mahboubi joins this cast after from his recent performance in Cosi at the school. Other recent work includes Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods and

Shakespeare’s As You Like It for Jan Elsted in the Shakespeare Showcase in 2010. In 2008 Mahboubi received acclaim for his involvement in the school production of Rent, revealing his creative range. Clarke is known at the school as the man behind the production of Run Lola Run in 2003. Some of his recent directing work includes Rent, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Bang

Bang You’re Dead. This year, he will also direct David Campton’s The Cagebirds for the provincial drama festival. Sarah Dugdale will appear as Olive Ostrovsky in this show. Her stage work includes Mulan and Into the Woods at Meadowridge Theatre. Jerry Yang also recently appeared in Mulan and the Drama Showcase at the school. Stephanie Cramer has acted for three years at the school with performances in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Into the Woods, where her outstanding singing voice stole the show, Clarke noted. The play’s costumes and sets were designed by Rhonda Laurie. The full cast includes: Harrison Collett, Stephanie Cramer, Sarah Dugdale, Janine de Klerk, Maddison Ebner, Alex Kwon, Shermaine Lee, Faran Mahboubi, Ashwin Singh, Sam Weselowski, and Jerry Yang.

Ridge Racer skates for B.C. The Canada Winter Games has a strong medal contender in the form of a Ridge Meadows Racer. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Speedskater Michelle MacKay wore her Team B.C. bodysuit Tuesday during a Ridge Meadows Racers practice at Planet Ice Maple Ridge. She’ll be looking to add a medal (or more), hopefully of the golden variety to her snazzy ensemble while in Halifax, where she has joined fellow Racers Thomas and William McLennan as provincial team members at the Canada Winter Games. All three are skating in the short track event and compete Feb. 13-17 at St. Margaret’s Centre in Halifax. “Hope” is the standard answer from athletes asked about medal expectations at an event of such magnitude. The 18-yearold Maple Ridge resident has set her bar higher in a sport normally dominated by Quebecers. For her, “hope” makes way for “expect.” For good reason. She’s a five-time provincial champion, won medals at Canadian age-class championships, and placed

sixth overall at the 2010 Canadian junior championships (with a bronze medal in the 500-metre race). MacKay cemented her place on B.C.’s Canada Games squad by skating to top spot in the 1,500-metre and 1,000-metre distances at a qualifier Nov. 6-7 at the Abbotsford Rec Centre. She added a fourth place result in the 500-metre race to qualify first overall. “I’m hoping to win some medals and be in all the finals,” she told the TIMES Tuesday, two days before flying to Nova Scotia. “I’m aiming for at least two but I would love to medal in all the distances.” MacKay has Games experience, but on a much smaller scale, as she represented Fraser Valley (Zone 3) at a pair of BC Winter Games: 2006 in Trail and 2008 in Cranbrook/ Kimberley. MacKay skated to two silvers and two golds in 2006 as a juvenile, and took home four golds as a junior in 2008. In her 13th season of speedskating, MacKay showed early promise after, at four years old, she followed her older sister Carolyn into the sport. “I gave her the option of going into figure skating or speedskating,” her mom Trish recalled. “She went into speedskating.” MacKay, who’s been skating against older competitors for many years, says falls and crashes

SRT tourney Athletic director Glenn Whittington said the SRT junior boys team dominated their opposition, beating both D.W. Poppy and R.E. Mountain before soundly defeating Credo Christian in the final 42-13. The team was led by Rashaun Simonise, Shae Fegereaux, John Park and Tanner Hartley. The SRT junior girls team came second in the tournament. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

have luckily come few and far between through the years. Until this season, that is. “I’ve fallen a couple of times this season already,” she said, attributing the odd slip-up to pushing herself harder in preparation for the Games. Being a good speedskater takes more than good technique and natural athletic ability. MacKay is on the ice six times a week, training with the Racers and their coach, former Canadian Olympian Eden Donatelli-Green. “It’s a lot of effort, but worth it,” said MacKay, who is balancing speedskating with post-secondary studies – she’s a first year kinesiology student at the University of the Fraser Valley. “I like the racing, I like the competitions and the travelling

The Ramblers won two games and lost two at Stelly’s Tournament in Victoria last weekend. They lost to Claremont Secondary on Friday 65-44. Later that day, they lost to the Oak Bay Breakers by eight points. The next day they beat Spectrum Community School 6637, and the Stelly Stingers 54-47. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

you get to do with it.” MacKay admits there are days when she doesn’t feel like coming to the rink, like when she’s had a hard week and expects yet another gruelling practice. “But you have to keep going because that’s what’s going to make you better,” she said. Added motivation for MacKay is the standard set by her coach, who knows a thing or two about high level speedskating. Donatelli-Green won silver (500m) and bronze (3000m relay) Olympic medals at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. She also served as an alternate for the Canadian squad at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France, and competed at seven world championships, and multiple international events

and Canadian championships. Donatelli-Green is one of two speedskaters inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. The influence DonatelliGreen has on MacKay is “huge,” MacKay said. “She’s been my coach since the beginning and she’s always believed in me,” MacKay said. “Seeing her as an Olympian is pretty cool and hearing all her stories and stuff.” MacKay, who was two spots away from representing Canada at the world junior championships after her fourth place result at the national competition, is looking to take her skating to yet another level in the near future. “I want to make the national teams soon and junior worlds next year and hopefully the Olympics, eventually.”

Gold for Smith Grade 9 student Payten Smith continues to wrack up the wins, with another gold medal on the island at the Port Alberni Invitational. Wrestling coach Bill McCrae said that Payten pinned all four of her Grade 12 opponents, and sent a clear message that her silver medal last year was not a one-time feat. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

The one-act musical Tell Me On a Sunday runs this weekend at St. Andrews Heritage Hall. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Imagine the familiar tones of the musical master Andrew Lloyd Webber, coupled with comedy, tragedy, love and laughter, and that is what audiences can expect from the sounds of Tell Me On a Sunday. This is Webber’s only one-act musical, and Third Degree Theatre have taken this 1979 script and updated it to produce the show they are touring and Robyn Van Luven stars as Emma now bringing to Maple in the Third Degree Theatre Ridge. production of Tell Me On a Sunday. “It’s funny, it’s poignant,” said director John Stuart. “The music is definitely Andrew Lloyd Webber.” With just a short amount of time to tell the story, Stuart had the challenge of conveying it all to the audience, which was made even more difficult with just one actor. “It’s only an hour long, but it’s a roller coaster,” he said. “We go from totally high highs to the depths of despair.” Robyn Van Luven stars as Emma, a girl from England who moves to New York City in search of love. Stuart started work on this project three years ago, and rehearsals started with Robyn at the end of September. “The biggest challenge is the music and getting the emotion across,” said Stuart. “The audience has to fully understand who [Emma] is interacting with,” he said, as she is the only one in the cast. “Fortunately Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music makes it very easy.” Tell Me On a Sunday runs tonight, Feb. 11th and 12th, at the St. Andrews Heritage Hall, located at 22279 116 Ave. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with the show starting at 8 p.m. All tickets are $15. Purchasing tickets can be done online at www.thirddegreetheatre.ca or by calling 604-612-9713.

WALKER, Sherry January 31, 1943- February 6, 2011 It is with incredible sadness that we announce the loss of our best friend, daughter, niece, aunt and mom. Sherry, slipped away suddenly on February 6, 2011 at the age of 68 after a courageous and inspirational five month battle at VHG. She showed amazing strength and grace even until her last moment. Sherry was a trueVancouverite, born at VGH in 1943 and growing up in Strathcona, before moving to raise her son Leigh with Rex in Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Predeceased by her father Richard Eng in 1956. Sherry was the glue that bound so many of us together, both family and friends alike and for this we are eternally grateful. She was one of the special ones, a true gem and a profound loss. She was the mother everyone wished to have and the daughter everyone wished they could be. Her love for her mother Anne, Leigh, Leigh’s wife Margaret (and her mother Barbara), Aunt Irene and Uncle Eugene, nieces Vicki and Brenda (and their families) and countless friends and family were unsurpassed. This love will live on in her traditions, recipes, humor, and warmth that she instilled in all of us. Sherry spent over 20 years working for Douglas College and after her retirement, began tutoring English and volunteering at the Maple Ridge SPCA. She has the greenest thumb of all, creating beautiful gardens and recently she began taking piano and cake decorating lessons. Ruby, her new puppy, was to be her faithful companion in the coming years and Ruby misses her mommy dearly. Whether it was organizing last minute dinners at the Flamingo, catching the latest movies, helping Annie with crafts, or her photography, Sherry was always on the go. Forever the hostess, Sherry would be proudest to be remembered for always creating a wonderful home and garden and hosting her loved ones during Christmas and Thanksgiving. Even in our grief Sherry would want us to be comfortable, happy and well fed. She loved her life, her family and we will always cherish her warmth, kindness, friendship, love and generosity. “Don’t cry because I’m gone but smile because I’ve lived”. We love you, we miss you and we look forward to seeing you again. Relax now Sherry, you are in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to the Maple Ridge SPCA. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday Feb 12th, 2011 at 2pm at First Memorial Funeral Home, 602 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC.

LOUNSBURY With deep regret, the family of Mertia Rosemond Lounsbury of Maple Ridge announces the passing of our Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Great-Great-Grandmother at Ridge Meadows hospital on Friday, the 28th of January due to complications from pneumonia. Born in Osewgo, New York in October 1st, 1911 to Reverend David W. and Ivy Edna Parks, the family moved to Canada in the early 1920’s, arriving at last at Barrhead, Alberta, where she met and married Frank Lounsbury in 1934. (He predeceased her in 1981.) The family moved to B.C. in 1938, moved about the lower mainland, and at last settled in Surrey at the end of WW II. In the early ‘90’s she moved to Maple Ridge; later she was joined by daughter Donna and son-in-law Alan Bell where she reigned as family matriarch until her demise, much loved and deeply respected by all who knew her. Raised as she was by a father who was a Minister in the Standard Church of Canada and with whom she travelled extensively as a child and young adult throughout Eastern Canada and the US, she had a deep, strong faith that served her well all her years. Her strong alto voice was welcome wherever she went, as were her organ and piano playing. In her later years she provided her Church with an abundance of flowers grown in her gardens and arranged with loving care. She was a fierce and loving devotee of family and friends, and never hesitated to help anyone who needed her kind ministrations. She was our rock, and the love and warmth she displayed endeared her to all who met her, and her impish sense of humor and ready laughter will always bring a smile to those of us who remember her so fondly. She leaves an extensive family; son Dale of Chilliwack, daughter Rose (Dennis) of Sorrento, daughter Donna of Maple Ridge, grand daughter Lisa Radli and family, grandsons Gordon and Greg Moore and families, granddaughter Laurel Wright and family, granddaughter Sylvia Johnson and family, plus numerous step-grandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held in St. Andrews United Church, 22165 Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge on Friday, 18th February, 2011, commencing at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of one’s choice in her name would commemorate the wonderful person she was. She will be missed by all who knew her, but we WILL meet again.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Mysteries continue, for one more week. Seek the truth beneath appearances. Dig deep. (Someone acts sweet but can’t or won’t do what they seem to promise. Applies all week.) Rest, plan and meditate Sunday. Visit a psychic, pastor or other counsellor. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge Monday/Tuesday. Monday holds refusals despite your luck, but you might vault over them. Tuesday favours you, especially in two areas: friendship, and depths. (So again, dig deep.) Chase money or a sensual bond Wednesday (good) and Thursday (goals might be elusive). Talk, travel Friday/ Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Relationships are accented, but don’t fall in love or propose this week. (Don’t worry – if such seems imminent, there’s still lots of time.) Wishes come true Sunday – happiness, friends, light romance and popularity paint your future with golden strokes! But retreat this night through Tuesday: you need a short but deep rest: seek quietude, plan, contemplate. You’ll spy the inner workings of love Tuesday. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness surge upward Wednesday/Thursday – strike early Wednesday, in legal, travel, intellectual areas. Chase and conserve money Friday/Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: This is your last week of work – Friday begins a month of fresh breezes, exciting meetings, new horizons and opportunities. (Opportunities are unusually important this winter/ spring – seizing them can change your life.) Until Friday afternoon, complete chores, especially the obligations that “show up” Wednesday/Thursday – if neglected they will weigh you down later, just when you should be rising. Earlier, chase practical and prestige goals Sunday – success accompanies the ambitious! Wishes, optimism and social joys mark Monday/Tuesday. All week, DON’T begin a new love.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Travel, call during an active, friendly Sunday. But this night, settle into home – and there, through Monday/Tuesday, tackle some difficult questions around relationships, marriage and life’s opportunities. (Are there any left for you? Yes, many, but they’re all connected to ambition, career, until late 2012.) Tuesday’s better; a “secret” friend or stranger might help. Romance, creativity, pleasure and beauty whisk you to adventure midweek! (Don’t start a love relationship this week, though. It’s doomed long term.) Plunge into chores Friday/Saturday. Chase fun, friends, all week. Taurus April 20-May 20: The accent lies on ambition, career, dealings with VIPs, bosses and parents. Take a quiet, behind-the-scenes approach. Confidential discussions, private planning, quietly lining up allies, contacting/applying to government or institutions – all these contain a quiet but lucky “change.” Chase money or shop Sunday, but NOT for techie items. Monday (barriers) and Tuesday (success) bring errands, communications, paperwork, details. Midweek accents home, and a choice between ambition and relaxation. Romance calls Friday/ Saturday. All week, avoid over-exertion, physical and intellectual. Gemini May 21-June 20: DON’T fall in love, propose, or chase a new romance this week. You’ve started to achieve success in group and social situations – and this will continue for four months of solid, heart-warming growth. If you’re single, this might well yield a new love. But not this week. You shine Sunday: start new projects, ask favours, show your talents. Your intuition is superb, so just do, rather than over-think. Quit by suppertime. Money, purchases and possessions fill Monday (barriers, waste) and Tuesday (success – buy high-tech). Communicate, travel midweek. Home, rest Friday/Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The romantic theme continues, but DO NOT begin a love affair or new relationship this week. Other themes, creativity, speculation, beauty, pleasure and teaching, are fine. Generally, you are (or your subconscious is) putting on the brakes a bit in all these areas, preparing for a subsequent surge. Sunday’s splendid – intellectual, travel, love and communication projects succeed. Exercise your ambitions Monday (dilemmas of choice) and Tuesday (success via creative effort). Social delights, flirtations, wish fulfillment arrive midweek! Retreat Friday/Saturday: plan the work that looms. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your “hibernation” period continues, so rest deeply – until Friday, when a month of romance, pleasure, speculation, risk and adventure starts! Neither make nor accept any partnership proposals this week (nor persuasive pitches for commitment of any kind). Sunday offers superb financial, investment, research, diagnostic and intimate opportunities. Sit down with a loved one for a deep, exploratory talk. Gentle wisdom enters Monday/Tuesday. Be ambitious mid-week, especially first thing Wednesday morning. (Avoid selfdeception.) Friday/Saturday bring social delights and bright optimism! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: If a new wish or life goal comes to you this week, don’t invest a lot of faith in it; your destiny is very likely going to detour around this one. Sunday’s filled with opportunities (or opposition if you push others too hard) – exciting meetings or openings “synch” with your intuition. It’s a good time to answer “yes” on a whim. Life’s depths and mysteries rise to the surface Monday/Tuesday: DON’T invest, commit, nor seek intimacy Monday – Tuesday, these succeed. Gentle love, understanding, cultural stuff Wednesday/Thursday. Friday begins a month of domestic matters.

Feb. 13 - Feb. 19 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Continue to seek money, new clients, to buy and sell, until Friday.Your personality has grown more gracious and alluring the past week or so, and this helps you with ambitions this week. You’re slowly changing, and slowly but seriously climbing, carving out a new “position” this decade. Tackle chores Sunday – you accomplish much! Relationships contain opportunity and opposition Monday, but success and good feelings Tuesday. Finances, investigation, intimacy, lifestyle choices are blessed Wednesday, “iffy” Thursday. Wisdom, gentle love come Friday/ Saturday. A busy month begins. Aquarius Jan.20-Feb.18:Yourenergy,effectiveness and charisma continue at a peak...sexual magnetism drips from you too. (Hmm, not sure of that image.) You might attract amorous attention, but DON’T begin a love affair now (nor ever with anyone you first meet this week). Sunday’s romantic, creative, pleasurable and beautiful – you’ll win at games or love! Tackle chores Monday (results uncertain) and Tuesday (good results). Relationships, opportunities, exciting meetings fill Wednesday (lucky morning!) and Thursday (be diplomatic, not evasive). Friday’s financial, and begins a month of money efforts. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Continue to lie low, rest, contemplate and plan. Refresh your spirit. Friday begins a month of fresh energy, rising charisma and effectiveness – but rest until then. Sunday’s splendid at home or in nature – a great day to enhance your security, deal with family members, garden, etc. Romance, creativity and beauty touch you lightly Monday/Tuesday, but the best that comes from this is friendship. It’s not quite time, Pisces. Tackle chores and health concerns Wednesday/Thursday. Wednesday morning’s efforts can open a lucky career door. Exciting meetings, opportunities occur Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Just wanted to thank Team Diverse, and the outstanding installers working with Diverse Flooring. Right from start to finish we were impressed with the professional, courteous manner of everyone on your team. We were called each day to confirm the time the installers would arrive and were continually called to make sure we were happy and if there was anything you could do for us. The end results are fantastic; we love all our new flooring and would highly recommend Diverse Flooring! Enthusiastically
