The scent of a federal election is in the air. While MP Randy Kamp has been touring downtown Maple Ridge to show off the results of his government’s Canada’s Action Plan, and the NDP is holding a nomination meeting on Sunday, the federal Liberal riding association isn’t convinced an election will come in early May. Back in Ottawa this week, there’s a stronger sense of an election coming, Kamp said on Wednesday, but that can change overnight. “It’s Randy Kamp feeling a bit more like (an election is coming) this week than a few weeks ago,” Kamp said, but whether the budget scheduled for March 22 will trigger a spring election is a “guessing game.” Kamp said he has a team of volunteers ready to start the campaign whenever an election is called. “We’re always vigilant, and we’ll be making preparations in case it happens,” Kamp said. Kamp said he was recently collecting input from the riding for the budget.

Ridge history comes alive in diorama

Someone recently complained to Maple Ridge Museum curator Val Patenaude that she’s been keeping a secret from the community. But the sign is clear when you walk into the museum: DewdneyAlouette Railway Society. And following the sign down the stairs, visitors to the museum will find the “secret” – an intricately constructed diorama with trains that run and historical scenes from Maple Ridge and the province. The society has operated in the museum basement for 26 years, adding to its diorama piece by piece, explained general manager Daryl Birtch. “It’s a long time – you’d think we’d be finished by now,” he joked.

The diorama includes a railway, scenes of Port Haney, Hammond, Ruskin, and the Ruskin Dam all depicted between 1925 and 1935. Constructing a diorama with such detail requires research, attention to detail – and a bit of engineering. The society has just come across a new picture of the area just up the hill from Port Haney, and so they will start designing that area next. When using pictures, it’s hard to know what scale a building was, but the club members usually start with a door, which they know is normally three feet by five feet, and work from there to draw the rest of the building. Sometimes if a person is behind a building in a picture, that will also give the perspective needed to design the model. “Every model is scratch built for the diorama,” Birtch said. “There are no kits.” For example, in creating a model sawmill, the society’s members built it board by board.

Some buildings take months to complete, including the Haney Hotel which they spent two months building. Birtch estimated he spent 150 hours building a wooden train trestle. Currently the club members are experimenting with light, and the goal is to get the display lit up so the interior of their miniature buildings can be seen as well. Birtch, a retired building official – inspector – who worked for various municipalities including Pitt Meadows, is a carpenter by trade and knows something about building. To raise money, the society goes to railway shows in Burnaby and Chilliwack and sells off items they receive from the estates of railroaders, Birtch said. In addition, they pay yearly fees of $110.

The museum has been “generous” in its low-cost rental of the basement to the railway society, Birtch said. Currently there are 16 members in the Dewdney-Alouette Railway Society, and Birtch said they always welcome new members. Coffee shop wake-up call Next time you’re asked if you want a double-double, you’d better check whether that refers to a coffee or a bypass operation. That’s because the new place to receive emergency care, apparently, is the Tim Hortons in the lobby of Royal Columbian Hospital. The Fraser Health Authority admitted Tuesday that the coffee shop had been used as an extension of the Emergency Room from late Monday night to early the next morning. Beds were set up for five patients, Fraser Health spokesperson Jenn Grover said, starting around 11 p.m. The patients were moved into the regular ER next door by about 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Grover added that no procedures were done on any of the patients… which is a relief, because it might be hard to Rrroll Up The Rim To Win while seeing someone get stitched up. Seriously, though, even advocates of private health care probably don’t like the optics of this one, although there is something to be said for being able to request a drink without having to pull that little cord and wait for an overworked nurse to show up. Those who felt an emergent need to find excuses for the failings that led the provincial health care system to this sorry state have pointed out that the coffee shop was, after all, closed while patients were being treated there. And no doubt there is some merit to Health Minister Colin Hansen’s observation that the coffee shop and hallways – every square inch of the hospital – are actually designed to be converted to such use when necessity prevails. But Fraser Health hallways are filled with patients as a matter of course. The New Democrats, smarting from the BC Liberals’ choice of the popular Christy Clark as B.C.’s next premier – they were surely hoping it would have been the polarizing Kevin Falcon – have been all over the issue: “Harper’s donut shop medicare shows lack of leadership on health,” one press release trumpeted. They’re right. Our hospitals need more attention. It should take a tremendous crisis to force health care into the coffee shops. This situation is so bizarre, it’s great fodder for a stand-up routine, but the only kidneys in our chili should be of the bean variety.

Recall is not an NDP ploy Dear editor,

Sorry Mr. Dalton, but the HST is a big loser on every level and its architect Mr. Campbell – the object of your admiration – has gone the way of the dodo because of it. Can you believe your fallback hero Mr. Falcon is, it seems, a loser also. It is clear you are incapable of making a logical informed decision. Mr. Dalton and his cohorts still keep claiming that the recalls are an NDP inspired conspiracy. The last time I looked, Mr. Vander Zalm was not an NDP member. And, I can’t believe that 91 per cent of British Columbians – including myself – are NDP members otherwise how is it possible they have not been governing this province for the last 10 years. Mr. Dalton still keeps up the rhetoric about how he only hears good things about the HST and that everyone he talks to and has polled, is happy or getting used to the HST. I would suggest Mr. Dalton venture out of his sheltered little bubble and talk to his constituents. Mr. Dalton ran for office on the promise

he would quote “make tough decisions.” He admits he had no part in discussions or the implementation of the HST. I wonder if he was in on the tough decisions about giving the casino owners $400 million and then cutting out all the services that those funds usually support such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters. It seems clear Mr. Dalton can’t make a rational good decision except for the sweet smelling pockets of the chosen few for the life of him. I would definitely recommend he get his hearing checked. The man truly lives in the twilight zone.

I agree that will be a serious loss to the downtown if it cannot be relocated. But, if you must blame someone, blame Weston Foods and their intransigence in dealing with the employees of Extra Foods. If Extra Foods had remained open, Thrifty Foods would not have had a foothold. Now, personally, I welcome Thrifty Foods as they have a sterling reputation and its placement in Haney Place Mall will make it more accessible to the seniors in the downtown core who now have a fair way to go to access Save-On-Foods. It is just unfortunate that it is at the expense of another great core retailer.

New truck gear gives Pitt firefighters a leg up

It is bright and shiny, and definitely looks like fun to operate, but the new piece of equipment at the disposal of the Pitt Meadows fire department is not just a new toy with a practical name. The Changeable Response Unit (CRU) now attached to Pitt’s new pickup truck, allows the vehicle to be a multi-purpose tool that can be changed quickly and efficiently depending on the situation required. It means that if there is a brush fire, or a fire on the dikes, the department can load their forestry skid onto the back of the truck in about 60 seconds, be on their way, and get closer to the fire without having to run longer hoses from their main trucks parked on the road. “The CRU is basically a smaller version of a type of equipment that you find on a dumpster truck,” said Rob Chatton, assistant fire chief of training. The Pitt fire department is the first one in North America to have this tool at their disposal. Chatton said that prior to this equipment, it took a “great deal of time and effort,” to change out the skids in the back of the truck, and once something

was loaded into the bed, it took away the truck’s ability to be a pickup

truck for daily use. “This unit allows you to have these frames or skids,” he said, “and you just choose which one you need for this particular event.” Pierce Manufacturing in Wisconsin designed and built the CRU, and as the department came in under budget on their pickup, they were able to purchase it right away. “We wanted to expand our abilities,” said Chatton.

He explained that they replaced their squad van in late 2010, and they knew that a pickup truck was an appropriate piece of equipment for them, but they wanted to do more with it. “What we’ve been able to do is take one piece of apparatus and turn it into a multipiece of equipment without increased cost to the community,” he said. The change-over of skids can be done by one person, but for safety’s sake the department uses two, and each firefighter has now been trained on its use. Being the first of its kind in North America, the City’s mechanic, Chad Orieux, was also instrumental in the equipment’s usability, and Chatton said

Orieux utilized his own ideas and expertise to install it, and that feedback was then provided to Pierce. “We wanted to keep it simple,” he said, “and that’s what he did.” The department is proud of their new equipment, as it enables them to serve the community better. “In order to be flexible and provide good value for the taxpayer,” said Chatton, “this equipment allows for flexibility while reducing that burden for the taxpayer.” “It’s unlimited what you can do with it,” he added, as the department can expand to more medical equipment and other specialized equipment that can be loaded at a moment’s notice.

Two women are dead, families have been torn apart, and now police need more help finding out what happened on a fateful February morning. Coquitlam RCMP are still looking for witnesses to the crash that killed Charlene Reaveley and Lorraine Cruz on Feb. 19, and would like to hear from anyone with any information. A memorial service for Reaveley was held last Saturday at the Haney Presbyterian Church in Maple Ridge. As I walked slowly around the floor, I met others walking slowly the other way. We smiled. We knew how lucky we were and that, in a day or two, we would be going home. A long-coveted item on Baillie House’s wishlist was crossed off recently after a donation from the Pitt Meadows Lion Club. The club’s $5,000 donation helped purchase a bariatric bed and mattress for Baillie House, which Laura Butler, development officer for the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, said “is an important addition to our delivery of care.” “This specialized bed and mattress make it possible for bariatric patients with mobility issues to now reside in Baillie House with greater comfort, wound prevention, and safety,” she said. The specialized mattress reduces pressure and greatly assists with wound prevention and treatment. A bariatric mattress’ low air loss surface assists in both preventative and therapeutic relief and healing of skin wounds and reduces the risk potential for deep vein thrombosis. “It’s a welcome addition of equipment that we can use to support and care for residents with special needs,” added Glenda Wonnocatt, the manager of health services at RMHF. Baillie House is home to 148 residents in need of long-term care. The facility’s staff strives to create a home-like environment to maintain the physical, cognitive, social and spiritual well-being of each resident. Pitt Meadows Lions Club, a non-profit volunteer group, has long been a supporter of the hospital, and has also made donations towards items in the maternity, hospice and lifeline programs.

Caitlin Jensen has a lot on her plate. She is working full time at Starbucks, planning her October wedding, and had to prepare for her graduation, and art show that opened at University of the Fraser Valley in Chilliwack last weekend. Jensen is interested in painting and sculpting, and studied those areas along with photography, drawing, and art history. She has a hunger for art, particularly the ancient art of tattooing, and has incorporated that into some of her pieces that are on display in her graduation show. “One of my works is a painting in an antique gold frame,” said Jensen, “and it’s a painting of Queen [Elizabeth] with tattoos.” “The idea is that one day tattoos will be so famous that the queen will have them,” she added. She is also exhibiting a sculpture of a tattooed arm, and said she is excited to show what she and her classmates have done over the years. Jensen says she has always had

Belt winner sees bright future A Carlson Gracie fighter now has five wins to his name, including a title from last month’s Seeing Red 2 event. by Amy Judd

MMA fighting changed 18-yearold Oliver Vajda’s life. The Thomas Haney student started his fight training about two years ago, and despite his success already in the sport, he said training and competing has changed not only his attitude, but also his personality. “It’s taught me never to give up,” he said. Being in Grade 12 can be challenging enough, but Vajda still finds the time to study, work, and train five days a week in the gym, and then do cardio and further training on the weekends. Still, he wouldn’t trade the experience for anything else. “I’ve always loved competing,” he said. “And this is mentally, physically, one of the most challenging sports.” With two brothers that he said beat him up when he was younger, and a love of Jiu-Jitsu, UFC, and action movies, training at Carlson Gracie gym in Maple Ridge seemed like a natural choice for Vajda. His ability showed right from the beginning, because Vajda is still undefeated after five fights, and now has a Bantamweight belt to show for his efforts. He had to lose 20 pounds before this fight however, which he said wasn’t easy. “I went through hell,” he laughed. Vajda said he basically had to eat chicken and vegetables and drink lots

The Seeing Red 2 event took place in front of a sold-out crowd on Feb. 18 at the Red Robinson Theatre in Coquitlam, and although Vadja was not really nervous, he knew this fight was

a big one. “Every fight is important,” he said, “but this one I knew [was bigger] in terms of what came along with it, and potential opportunity.” He faced James Pratt, from Comox Valley, who gave Vadja a good fight, but it was not enough to take the title. “As both fighters tried to establish themselves,” said Gracie

owner Brendon Leong, “it appeared the taller Vajda had the upper hand.” Using [his] superior striking ability, Vajda nullified the stocky Pratt by finding his range with punching and kicking combinations,” he added. “Frustrated, the shorter Pratt wisely decided to take the fight to the ground, however, Vajda’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills allowed him to calmly defend himself and, at times, threaten Pratt with various submission holds,” he said. “In the end the judges made the obvious decision by awarding Vajda the winner and announcing him Bantamweight Champion.” “It all comes down to you,” said Vadja. “Your wins, your losses. The second you doubt yourself, it’s over.” He called the judges’ decision, “one of the greatest moments of my life.” “The ref put my hand up in the air,” he said smiling, “and I just screamed out loud.” His parents were in the audience supporting him, and although he said they were nervous, they know they will most likely be attending more fights in the future. “He now has to defend the title,” said Leong. Vadja said his dream would be to fight professionally, in an organization like UFC, and he is willing to work hard to get there, and knows it will not be easy. “This has taught me how to be humble,” he said. “Even though I got a belt, there are people [at Carlson Gracie] who beat me every day.” “The fight is not just about me,” he added. “There are a hundred people backing me up.”

The Ridge Meadows Flames were on a winning streak just a few game ago, and now the Port Moody Black Panthers have fought back for a three-three tie in round one of playoffs.

“In one sense kids always dream of being in game seven,” said Flames coach Tavis Eaton. “Well, now here’s their chance.” The Flames only managed to get one goal on Wednesday night at Planet Ice, and Eaton said they just had trouble staying out of the penalty box. The local boys had double the amount of penalties the Panthers had, and their coach believes that hurt them. “We just couldn’t get a flow going,” he said.

Ted Outerbridge has been called “the most successful professional magician in Canada” and “a champion of magic,” by reviewers.

The concept of the tour follows the idea that as dance, theatre, and day-to-day life are captured up on the stage, audiences are so delighted that they want to save the night and put it in a time capsule. According to their website, one of the premises of the show is that the Outerbridges predict the contents of a time capsule and lock the prediction in a metal chest before they perform at a venue. That chest is then shipped to theatres several months prior to the performance, and then the Outerbridges will call on randomly-selected audience members that night, and they will decide what the time capsule should contain. In what could only be magic, when the time capsule is opened, the contents match the predictions. The show will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the ACT. Tickets are $35 for adults, $28.50 for seniors, $25 for students, and $20 for children.

Janet Robertson is a decorated artist, and she will be sharing her knowledge of acrylic painting with those willing to learn. Robertson is coming to the ACT for two days this month to host an intermediate acrylics workshop. “It’s for people that have done acrylics,” said organizer Lyn Thomas. “Janice Robertson is a wonderful instructor,” she added. “She’s very giving with her knowledge.” It is recommended that participants sign up for both days of the workshop, as different elements will be explored on each day. “In a workshop setting it is also nice to see what other people are doing,” said Thomas. “How other people are handling their work.” Robertson launched her professional career in 1989, and has since won a number of awards, including the bronze medal in the Federation of Canadian

Artists 2000 Signature Members show, and the Margaret and William Foley Award at the 2001 Adirondacks National Exhibition of Watercolors in New York. “Quality of light is important to me,” said Robertson. “It gives me energy and inspiration and I hope something of that quality is what I give to people in my paintings,” she added. The intermediate acrylics workshop will be held on March 7 and 14 at the ACT, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The two-day workshop is $130 for Garibaldi Art Club members, and $195 for non-members. Russ Duncan 1925-2011

It is with tears and great memories we announce the passing of Russ Eve Duncan (nee Russell) who passed away on February 15th. Predeceased by husband John, brother Malcolm & Margarite, sister in law Margaret and niece Gail. Survived by brother Al (Torch); children Jim (Delee), Bruce (Kathleen) & Erin; grandchildren Eric, Spencer and John. Russ was born in North Vancouver. In 1932 the Russell family moved to Regina where they lived until Russ, in her early teens struck out on her own to Toronto. There in the 1940’s she worked for de Havilland building the Mosquito bomber. In 1945 Russ won the “Miss Models Model” contest, defeating over 3000 entrants. Her modeling career was launched and she moved to New York. It was there she discovered her lasting passion, dance. One of her regular dance partners was Ira Murray brother to the famous Arthur Murray. She returned to Vancouver as the house model for the Couture dept at the Hudson Bay Company where she met John. They married in 1954 and enjoyed all Vancouver’s blessings including water sports, skiing and camping. In 1956, they moved to Calgary, bought a restaurant and saw the birth of their sons, Jim and Bruce. They missed Vancouver, and came back for the birth of their daughter, Erin. Russ was involved with founding of the Sharks Swim Club, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and The United Church. Her real passion was the Dance Box which she started in 1972. She bought an old mail truck painted it hot pink, stocked it up and drove to dance studios across the lower mainland to fill the need for dance supplies. The Duncan TV room was changed into a store which overflowed to a shed, until the first “real” store on Austin Ave in Coquitlam was opened. The Langley store followed close behind, as she ran the business with her usual flair and spirit, while building a reputation as “the go to” person for Pointe Shoe fittings. She fit and took pictures of thousands of the ‘first pairs’. Russ’s first acting break came in her 70’s. She had parts in Cold Squad,Animal Miracles and many commercials. She was involved with the Cranberry Saucies Red Hat group which she loved, Russ was never one to miss wearing a fashionable (or not) chapeau. She golfed, white water rafted, snorkeled, made pottery, painted, swam, and loved to travel. Russ was a remarkable woman who lived her life to the fullest, right up to her very last days. She was a connoisseur of a good Martini and never missed a party. A celebration of her life will be held on her birthday April 17th 2011. Heartfelt thanks to Royal Columbian Hospital 5th floor South & North and Crossroads Hospice. In lieu of flowers a dance scholarship fund will be set up in her name. Donations can be sent to the Dance Box with scholarship fund noted or go have a good Martini. As the follow spot fades she slowly turns and walks away. The final curtain has come down. Bravo
