Former school board trustee Mandeep Bhuller will run as the Liberal candidate should a federal election be called today. The Conservative government was expected to fall on Thursday on its budget. But with the budget vote pushed to next week, Friday’s motion of non-confidence on contempt charges is being predicted as the more likely tipping point. Bhuller said the priority of
the current government is not Canadians or Canadian families, using the economy as an excuse. “The key component of government, which should be compassion within the policy framework that they use, does not exist in the Harper minority (government),” he said. Bhuller said it’s time to have a more compassionate government, instead of the

Jail guards at Fraser Regional Correctional Centre say a trailer may have been used as a “Trojan horse” to smuggle drugs, weapons, and cellphones into the jail. A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General confirmed this week that the Maple Ridge prison has now beefed up its policy “to prohibit public vehicles from being accepted into any on-site work programs.” Ridge Meadows RCMP said that an investigation was launched at the correctional centre on March 7. “We are working with B.C. Corrections on that investigation but it’s very active at this point, so I’m not going to comment any further on any details,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. Postmedia Network Inc. received a tip that drugs, makeshift knives, Cpl. “We take what we have for granted,” said Trenna Zaiser, after returning from a trip to Nicaragua to help locals understand and receive eye care. The contact lens technician and optometrist from Pacific Eye Doctors journeyed down to the poorer country with general manager and optician Judi Taylor for 10 days earlier this month. They were part of a group with the charity VOSH, (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity). Dr. Judy Schnarr, from Pacific, sponsors one staff member to go on each volunteer expedition. Zaiser has been four times now, but this year, Taylor was able to arrange her schedule to go as well. Now this trip has spawned an idea to donate as many nonprescription sunglasses as possible to the people there.

They’re so loving, the children, they just glom onto you.” She described a moment when a little girl came up to her and just snuggled into her arms. “All I could think about was my granddaughter and I just started crying,” she said. Both Taylor and Zaiser would like the opportunity to go again, but for now they are looking to collect as many pairs of non-prescription sunglasses as they can to send them down to Nicaragua. “We wear sunglasses for fashion,” said Taylor, “but they are so necessary.” Anyone can drop off all types of glasses and sunglasses at Pacific Eye Doctors, 22320 Brown Ave.

Some Kanaka Creek residents don’t like a development approved behind their properties but they insist this is not another case of NIMBYism. A three-acre lot on Gilker Hill Road will be turned into a 51-unit townhouse complex with the sole access to 16 units from a lane behind a row of homes. The Wooldridge family knew the lot behind them was slated for development when they moved in three years ago. But they didn’t think it would include 16 homes having their only entrance via the lane behind their home. And squeezing 51 units onto three acres seems too dense for the neighbourhood Dave Wooldridge. “None of us are opposed to the development,” Wooldridge said. “What we’re concerned with is the density.” The streets are already busy and traffic backs up on Gilker Hill every morning, Wooldridge pointed out.
Fifty-one units up the narrow road will bring a lot more traffic to the area, he said. Seventy-two people signed an online petition against the development and about 20 of the residents showed up at Tuesday’s council meeting. Mark Evans, another resident whose home backs onto the development, has been spearheading the opposition. Council approved the development permit at this week’s council meeting. Evans was surprised that the points brought up by the citizens weren’t considered in the final decision. “In the end, we were portrayed as a bunch of NIMBYs,” Evans said. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said, however, he’s “sympathetic” to the residents, but he said the development will fit the neighbourhood. “I think that once they get this up and built and landscaped... it’ll add to the community,” Daykin said. The developer has to widen the lane and Gilker Hill Road, adding a sidewalk, and adding dedicated left- and right-hand turn lanes at Kanaka Way and Gilker Hill Road.

Hody Lye isn’t going for a basic trim when she, along with others, will voluntarily lose her locks in early June. “It’s going down right to the skin,” she said. Lye is raising money to help families struggling financially because of childhood cancer. Subsequently, she’s shaving her head in support of Athletes in Kind and the B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents Association. The seventh annual AIK head shave will take place at Pitt Meadows Osprey Village on Saturday, June 4 at 7 p.m. Lye is sacrificing her hair for many reasons, the one closest to her heart being her dad, who died 25 years ago from a brain tumour. She has also known many people including her family, friends, and clients, who have been touched in many ways by cancer. While it is cruel in all cases, it is especially unkind to children, who don’t get to experience becoming an adult.
“All cancer sucks, but child cancer’s not fair,” she said. “Kids haven’t had a chance to live their life. If I can help somebody in some way who is dealing with a difficult situation, then I’m happy to do that.” Among those joining Lye on the stylist’s chair is six-year-old Davis Balla, who will have his head shaved for the cause. Davis’s twin sister Lauren will be on hand for support. Recently, Lye was at the Balla household for dinner when she mentioned she was going to shave her head. “Davis said, ‘I want to do that!’” said the twins’ mom Shannon Balla, the TIMES advertising sales manager. “We explained he would have to raise money and with his sister’s help, we could do that.” On March 23, Davis heard a child asking for blood donations on the radio, as he has cancer. Davis remarked, “I’m going to help.” The youngster knows all about giving back, since his dad, Darcy, rides for Team Finn in the annual Ride to Conquer Cancer. New Truck Routes in Effect As of March 1, the City of Pitt Meadows implemented designated truck routes within City limits following an amendment to the Highway and Traffic Bylaw.The new routes and amended bylaw are to help address citizen safety and quiet in residential areas. The new route network restricts truck traffic on McNeil Road, Hammond Road, Harris Road from Lougheed Highway to Airport Way and the urban portion of Ford Road. Truck Route signs have been installed at key locations to provide additional guidance. Time to trust democracy All right, already. Enough with the politics. Now it’s time for democracy. We get it that there is a minority government running things in Ottawa. We understand that that means political parties and their leaders will do a lot of pushing and shoving for position. In fact, ongoing polling has reinforced the last election results, which indicate that Canadians wanted a minority government, or at least, didn’t trust any of the available choices at the time with a majority. The question of trust that was a major factor in the outcome of the 2008 federal general election has not been resolved – far from it. That question has grown in the ensuing years, through attempts at formation of political coalitions, through snap prorogations of parliament, through accusations that the government has been withholding vital information from opposition members of parliament, and most recently, through the governing party’s contempt of parliament on two charges. To further erode the public’s trust in the minority parliament currently governing Canada, the opposition has consistently failed to stand behind its charges of contempt, incompetence, abuse of process, and disregard for democratic principles against the government side. The opposition parties’ refusal to act on such serious allegations in the past has left Canadian voters in a state of mistrust for all parties. The governing party, for its part, has taken on the airs of a majority – a form of contempt in itself, albeit one that the prime minister has apparently felt necessary to maintain what he believes is in the best interests of the country. The minority government has tabled a budget that says it has salvaged the best possible outcome for Canada in the midst of a struggling world economy. And it has tabled an attitude that the economic outcome is worth it at any cost – even occasional lapses into contempt for democratic process. Our parliamentarians can’t make up their minds which is more important: politicking or democracy. It’s time to trust the people to take responsibility for their future. It’s time to trust democracy. – B.G.

Longer break proven wrong Dear editor,
The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows school district is recommending a two week spring break, an altered calendar holiday, and adding a few minutes to every school day to make up for the instruction time lost. This totals six less instructional days of school, in addition to six professional days, which already occur throughout the school year. The researcher they hired found that, “simply adding hours to the school calendar does not improve performance” and that “more/less time has little impact” in reference to increased or decreased time in each day. So how does the school district plan on making up for the lost days of instruction time? They don’t and this instruction time will not exist. Teachers and students will have to

I value the time teachers spend with my kids and I know how hard they work to provide our children with a great education. I would prefer they have more instruction time, not less. Does the school district think so little of a teacher’s day of instruction that they feel six days less will have no effect on a student’s education? I quote from an article in the Vancouver Sun, where Gary Rupert, an education professor at the University of B.C. said: “It’s the equivalent of saying you’re going to have an extra piece of bread tonight but you’re not going to have any dinner at all tomorrow.” Other school districts, (Chilliwack and Abbotsford) want to go back to a oneweek spring break after extending their spring break to two weeks. They feel the reduction of instruction days has an impact on students. It was done as cost-saving measure, but it is not a direction they want to go to, in the long term. So learn from the mistakes of others and don’t compromise our students’ education for the sake of saving a few dollars. Canucks care for planet
Dear editor,
Earth Hour is upon us once again, and on Saturday, March 26 from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. more than a billion people worldwide will be switching off their lights. Last year, 50 per cent of Canadians reportedly participated in Earth Hour; strong evidence, I think, that Canadians are looking for action on climate change. For even stronger evidence, look at the new poll conducted for the World Wildlife Federation, which found that 84 per cent of Canadians are “as convinced or more convinced than last year that urgent action is necessary on climate change.” Climate change is ultimately about how we produce and use energy. So switching from non-renewable to renewable energy as quickly as possible, and finding ways to conserve and use energy more efficiently are ultimately the keys to solving climate change. What is the power of the future? That’s the question raised by Global News anchor Chris Gailus the other night, and it’s a very good question in light of what is going on in Japan. The world uses 320 billion kilowatthours of electricity every day. And
demand for electricity continues to grow at an incredible pace. We need power, and we need to get it from somewhere. But where? In B.C., we’re very lucky to get most of our power from hydro. But as Global News reported, 12 per cent of our electricity is imported from Alberta and generated by burning coal. I think we can do better than that. We can become 100 per cent clean and renewable in this province. We have an obligation to the rest of the world to use our abundance of safe, clean, renewable energy wisely and not take it for granted, especially when we see others struggling with nuclear power and trying to clean up coal. We owe it to the world and to future generations to put our clean energy resources to good use.

Ridge Meadows Home Show has become one of this community’s largest single events, and as such always sells out and draws thousands of people to town for the three-day annual event. Well this year, organizers are announcing a change that will not only attract even more spectators, but involve a lot more exhibitors in the 2011 show at Planet Ice running April 29 to May 1. The indoor show is expanding outdoors – and in a big way, explained coordinator Cass Winder. For the first time, the Ridge Meadows Home Show will include an Outdoor Leisure and Lifestyles Show.
“When something is right, you can feel it,” Winder said. And this concept felt right from the beginning. “Always in pursuit of something new and different for our home show visitors, and out of space with a sellout show and no where to grow, we let a brainstorming session take us down the road to find the essence of what makes our region stand out from the rest of the Lower Mainland,” she elaborated. The outdoor show was the result, its goal to focus on everything for the backyard and beyond in the way of outdoor recreation and fun. After literally decades of the home show being part of the Maple Ridge event, organizers are pretty excited about the newest addition. “This is going to be a really amazing show,” Winder said. “The outdoor show is without limits. It’s going to be such a great addition.”

They kept a close watch on the man and were able to see him get into a pickup truck and drive away. When the police arrived, they gave the licence plate number to them, and a police officer on patrol later that night saw the vehicle in the 21800 block of Lougheed Highway. The man was then arrested, the stolen property recovered, and he was held in custody for a first appearance in court on Thursday, March 24.

A 28-year-old Maple Ridge man was arrested on March 21, after police obtained a search warrant for a property on 203rd Street. Members of Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit, and Marijuana Enforcement Team seized 128 marijuana plants, in various stages of growth, along with two firearms, and a trailer that was used to house the illegally grown plants. The suspect was released from custody after the search, and he will appear in court to answer to charges in May.

Randy Kamp’s assistant Mark Strahl is on a leave and, if an election is called, will run in the Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon riding. Strahl was chosen Monday night to contest a federal riding being vacated by his father, MP Chuck Strahl. “There’s been a lot of sleepless nights
but now that it’s over there is a lot of relief,” he said after winning the nomination for Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon, where his father is stepping down. Dale Saip was chosen Monday night as well to replace John Cummins in DeltaRichmond East. Cummins and Chuck Strahl announced earlier this month they would not run in the next election, which could be as early as this spring if an election call is made this week. Mark Strahl, who beat pilot Ernie Charlton 144 to 77 for the nomination, said there’s a lot of work to be done to get ready for a campaign. “We hope there won’t be an election too soon,” he said.
“But if there is we’ll be ready.” After an election is called, Strahl said he will step down from working as an executive assistant to one of his father’s colleagues, Tory MP Randy Kamp. Strahl, 32, has served in a variety of parliamentary intern roles in Ottawa. He is from Chilliwack and has been married to his wife Lisa for 12 years. They have one son. In an unusually rushed process, candidates only had a week to prepare for the nomination bid instead of the usual eight. Okanagan-Coquihalla Tories chose Penticton councillor Dan Albas to replace MP Stockwell Day, who stepped down earlier this month.

The Maple Ridge SPCA’s new shelter has taken shape. By about mid-April, animals staying in the existing facility will be moved to new kennels in the stateof-the art building on the same property, said Mark Vosper, general manager of the local SPCA shelter. The old facility will then be razed to make way for a parking lot. “This has been on the cards for a number of years,” More Vosper said. “It was exciting when Photos we started to break Online ground this year.” The new community animal centre has a $3.75million price tag, which includes cost of land purchase and construction. It has been built on the site of the existing shelter at 10235 Jackson Rd. The District of Maple Ridge and the BC SPCA each provided $1.87 million in funding for the project and the BC SPCA will pay for 50 per cent of the land value the new shelter will sit on. The new shelter will have room for about 20 dogs at a time in its 12 double kennels.

Tsunami funds donated Village Assist Ridge Meadows Society gave the final $7,000 of the money they raised after the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia to the Asante Centre in Maple Ridge on Friday, March 18. The group is in the process of dissolving the charity and wanted to give the remaining funds back to the community. The Asante Centre said it will use the money for a new resource centre.

Craig Speirs, who will run for the NDP in the Pitt MeadowsMaple Ridge-Mission riding, said the budget and the contempt charge are two strikes against the government. “The budget is a slap in the face for the taxpayer,” Speirs said. In addition, it provides little for people who have life
challenges, for example, the poor and seniors. Speirs said that some people say the country can’t afford another election, but democracy isn’t free, he said, and elections refresh democracy. “I intend to challenge the Harper government at every turn,” Speirs said.
Speirs has a strong environmentally agenda, but he doesn’t see that in conflict with the strong labour focus of the NDP. While he said he has a lot of friends in the Green Party, he doesn’t believe that unions are “brown,” ignoring environmental issues. Many labour union people
have the environment as their number two priority, Speirs said, and he believes they go “hand in hand.” Green issues are also social issues as everyone needs clean water, clean soil, and clean air, Speirs said. MP Randy Kamp didn’t return phone calls by press time.

Pruning
Not too late to trim plants for spring

old, wind, and long, heavy rains made gardening a tough slog for some of us this spring – but we still have a few more weeks to finish the early pruning. Soon, branches will leaf out and make it harder to see what we’re cutting. All the usual suspects should be pruned out or tidied up: branches that have broken in winter gales, and dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Any growth that’s started blocking windows or stretching over access points such as paths should be removed. Very low branches that make it hard to work on garden beds underneath should also be taken out. In very shady areas, somewhat higher branches may be removed to allow more light for plants growing below. Witch hazels need immediate attention if any suckering stems are growing from the rootstock under the graft. The stems are unmistakable in flowering season, because the suckers hang on to many

dead leaves and produce only tiny, rusty-coloured flowers. Rootstock stems are more vigorous, and if allowed to remain, will eventually dominate the tree. Almost all the earlyflowering shrubs and trees should be pruned right after blooming. Even better, why not prune while they are blooming, and get some flowers for the house, as well. Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas), for example, usually has multiple stems and often needs some of the congested middle ones pruned out. Its bright yel-
low flowers last a long time inside. Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) both bloom better if one or two old stems are removed each year. Both can spread quite widely, and as they get older, will also need pruning for shape. This is the time to cut buddleia back to about 30 centimetres (a foot) or so from the ground. Because it flowers on new growth, it will rush to put out fresh stems that produce pyramidal heads of pink, white, or purple flowers in August. If it’s not pruned, buddleia will grow so tall that it flowers out of sight. The ‘PeeGee’ hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) produces sumptuous blooms if it’s cut down to 30 cm or so from the ground in early spring. The mop-head hydrangea (Hydrangea macropylla) should have its old flowerheads pruned away and the remaining stems cut back to large, sturdy buds. During March, the shrubby lavatera ‘Barnsley’
should be pruned to 30 cm. It should not be cut right down to ground level unless you want to trigger a reversion from white flowers to pink ones. Luckily, some gardeners prefer pink lavatera while others enjoy mixing the two colours. It’s also time to cut red-twig and yellow-twig dogwoods back to a few inches above ground level. Lavender can be sheared back now but only into the green wood, because the old, brown areas of stem are reluctant to re-shoot. After severe temperatures this year, hardy fuchsia stems will have died to ground level, and most gardeners will need to cut them right down. But gardeners whose hardy fuchsias always get chomped by deer may want to experiment with leaving all the erect stems. It seems Bambi has no interest in getting close to a faceful of dead twigs. Gardeners who need to work around those fuchsias should take care to wear eye protection.

Meadow Ridge Knights junior bantam coach Nathan Mellalieu has come full circle, football-wise. A former assistant coach with the UBC Thunderbirds and SFU Clan, Mellalieu is making his first foray into coaching at the community level. “I owe so much to football,” he said. “It really shaped me and helped me define myself. Even though I went to university, I owe more to football than I do to my academia.” Mellalieu will juggle an already busy schedule so he can guide the Knights. The 35-year-old father of three operates Studeo 55, a successful health club in downtown Vancouver. The cast of Twilight trained there, as well as other celebrities including Halle Berry and Harrison Ford. Even with his full calendar, Mellalieu is diving into coaching, in hopes of giving players the kind of guidance he received as a youngster. “I had great coaches growing up and they ended up being sort of mentors to me,” Mellalieu said. “I hope to give kids the same experience I had. It kept me out of trouble and kept me committed to school. If you’re successful on the football field, you’re very likely to be successful in life.” Before he entered the business field, Mellalieu was a football player, and a good one to boot. At the time, there wasn’t any minor football near Mellalieu’s home in east Maple Ridge, so he satiated his gridiron fix playing linebacker and running back with the Coquitlam Minor program. He played closer to home when he reached the 16 to 17 age group, suiting up for the Knights midget squad. He also attended Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Secondary, the closest school with a minor football program. After high

school, Mellalieu played a couple of years at The College of the Siskiyous in California. Back in his home province, Mellalieu accepted a football scholarship offer from UBC. There, he played linebacker for the varsity Thunderbirds, helping the team win a Vanier Cup title in 1997 in his first year at UBC. The Thunderbirds were consistently ranked among the top three university football programs in Canada during Mellalieu’s time from 1997 to ’99. He capped his football career by being named UBC’s Most Inspirational Player in 1999 while serving as the team’s defensive captain. His success beat the odds. Mellalieu was told by doctors he would never play football again, first at age 13 because of a knee injury, and then at 18 because of his ailing back. “It was actually a stress factor, L4 L5,” Mellalieu recalled. “It could have happened doing anything but it really flared up just at the end of high school. Bragg became involved in the sport when a wheelchair sports demonstration team came to his elementary school, and he hasn’t looked back since. “I love everything about it,” he said. “The speed, the strategy, it teaches you how to push a chair, and the teamwork.” He said for him, the whole experience was an awakening. “I’d always been a kid
that loved sports,” he said, “but I didn’t realize I could play sports.” With the season ending a few weeks ago, Bragg said he tries to train in Maple Ridge but it can be hard to find gym time out here. He has his sights set high however, with a goal of making the 2015 Canada Winter Games team, and playing in Division 1 of the provincial league. “I really think playing wheelchair sports helped me learn about my disability,” he said, “and how it doesn’t have to hold me back.”

Sixteen-year-old Nathan Bragg is very humbled by his recent award. The well-spoken polite young man has been playing wheelchair basketball for six years, but he stepped up his game last year to try and prepare for the Canada Games in a year-and-a-half. It appears his hard work paid off. “I was very happy that I was recognized throughout the year,” he said, after winning the 2010 Junior Athlete of the Year Award. He was named to the B.C. Junior Provincial team in 2010, and after the team placed fourth at the provincials he continued to hone his skills playing wheelchair rugby. But he never thought he would be playing at this level so quickly. Bragg has a disability classification of 0.5, which means he has impairment in his hands and arms as well as his legs. “I’m probably going to be the least functioning athlete on the court,” he said. The MRSS student was born with cerebral palsy, and although he is not confined to a wheelchair all the time, he admits it can be a struggle, but he tries to maintain his infectious positive attitude. “I get commended on
