Teens revving up interest in soapbox derby A group of students from Maple Ridge Secondary are encouraging young racers to sign up for a day of downhill races in June.
by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
The promotional push for the Ka-Vroom Soapbox Derby in June is underway, and all involved are hoping the excitement gains steam as the event draws near. The derby, for children between the ages of five and 14 in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, is the brainchild of a class from Maple Ridge Secondary School. Last January, students from MRSS’s FACTS (For Academically Creative and Talented Students) class organized a community event. According to the FACTS students, the 2010 event was the first soapbox derby held here in more than 40 years and “was a community success.” This year, MRSS staff and students are organizing a second derby, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 18 along a yet-to-be-confirmed street. The Ka-Vroom team’s goal is to make this year’s derby even better than the inaugural year. Grade 9 student Nicholas Renaud is among the FACTS students from Grades 8-12 organizing the derby, and says it’s a way of supporting the community. “It’s getting families in the community to come together to build a cart and then have a nice, fun, day with us,” he said. The MRSS group has been touring local elementaries, recruiting students to sign up and possibly build their own carts. While last year’s derby drew 15 “drivers,” they had to share two carts. “We’re hoping to get a few more carts this year,” said Renaud, who estimates it takes about 60 man hours to build one.

New Albion plan draws criticism Residents from all over Maple Ridge came out to provide opinions on a new plan for the Albion Flats. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
It took Mayor Ernie Daykin almost two hours to make his way inside the lobby of the Maple Ridge council chambers on Wednesday evening. He was standing outside answering questions and getting feedback from resi-
dents who had come to the open house to look at a draft land use concept plan for development of the Albion Flats. “This is exactly what we need,” he said. “A broad range of comments from the community.” Lots of people filtered through the lobby during the evening, with some finding the plan likeable, while others were not impressed by what they saw. “I’m actually a little confused,” said Kanaka resident Bruce Mastin. “I thought they were planning to do a village-style [development], but this looks like big-box.” “It looks like MeadowTown Centre,” he
added. Mastin doesn’t think this current plan is going to be pedestrian-friendly, and said it seemed like a waste of an opportunity. “It doesn’t look like this would be an interesting place to go,” he added. Long-time resident Don Hincks said he doesn’t dislike the plan, and he thinks something needs to be done to make the area better. “I think if the development is well done, then it could be good for the community… You could argue anything is better than what there is right now.” His wife Linda is eager to see what can
be done with the land, and said she and her husband checked out Morgan Crossing in Surrey, which this development has been compared to. She said Morgan Crossing wasn’t crowded and had a nice layout, but she was concerned that there is no place to walk dogs in the winter in this new plan. “I was thinking we could have some paths or trails here,” she said. Linda also suggested that some coffee shops set up around the sports fields would be a good addition for people watching their kids play.

School libraries feeling the pinch
Fundraising activities like book fairs help schools buy more books as budgets get tighter. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
School library collections are aging and staff time is slowly being eroded, concerning some local teacher-librarians. Constant budget pressures mean money is getting tighter and tighter and libraries can’t replace old, worn books, or buy all the titles they’d like their students to be reading, according to Suzanne Hall, district librarian for the local school district. “In terms of the money we have to fill (libraries) with books, our budget is quite limited,” Hall said. In addition, there are inequities between schools in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district (SD42) largely because some schools can raise more money for their libraries than others can, Hall explained. The B.C. Teacher Librarian Association, which is part of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, recently published a report that highlighted inequities across the province in library funding. School districts receive a set funding amount per student from the provincial government, and

districts. As the school board has squeezed its budget, they have tried to keep the cuts away from the classroom, but that has meant libraries have suffered, Tooker said. The per pupil library budget in SD42 has been static for 10 years, Tooker pointed out. The school district also decides how much librarian and clerical time school libraries get as these numbers are no longer in the provincial collective agreeement. “My dream would be every school had a full-time teacherlibrarian,” Tooker said. “That way, we could support 21st century learning.” Albion librarian Jim Graham was a half-time librarian in 1990 when there were 180 students at the school. Now with 570 students, he’s still just a half-time librarian at the school. His circulation is 30,000 books per year. Some smaller schools like Whonnock Elementary only have a teacher-librarian less than one day a week. Teacher-librarians support the school teachers in their literacy activities, Hall said. They have to know the children, understand their learning needs to be able to direct them to books they might enjoy.

Kristin Krimmel has always had a fascination with Japanese culture. It is easy to see that in her latest work, titled The Kimono Series, which will go on display in the District of Maple Ridge’s lobby starting April 1. While it may seem like a timely exhibition, given last month’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the show was already planned as part of events leading up to Arts and Culture Week, but now it has taken on a new meaning. “This exhibition has something of a bittersweet feel to it,” said Barbara Duncan, Maple Ridge Art Gallery curator. “I do feel that it was fortuitous that the display we planned evolved into a sort of elegy for the victims of the tragedy taking place in Japan.” “It was accidental that this exhibition coincided with the Japanese tragedy,” added Krimmel. “I hope this exhibition can serve as a tribute to the Japanese people and provide a focus for us here in Maple Ridge to think about their loss and their ongoing challenge to rebuild in the face of the catastrophic destruction that has occurred.” Each of Krimmel’s works presents a kimono unfolded to reveal a scene of contemplation.

Paper cranes aid victims The Maple Ridge fire department donated $250 to Blue Mountain Elementary’s crane project. by Amy Judd

It was organized chaos as every student and teacher at Blue Mountain Elementary poured out onto the grounds at the front of the school to receive a special donation on Thursday morning. Maple Ridge firefighters donated $250 to contribute to the students’ efforts to raise money for the victims of the devastating March 11 Japanese earthquake. The school has been hard at work making paper cranes and selling them for $1. But Rob Ramsay, president of the firefighter’s Local 4449, said the fire department decided they wanted to do more. “It’s encouraging to see this age group wanting to help the community,” he said. It all started with Sherry Pedersen’s Grade 5 and

dents tried to hurry up, and didn’t take the time to make them carefully. Kim was chosen to accept the donation from the firefighters, along with Patrick McConnell, Lilly Ferguson, and Jared Coops, as each student had put in extra effort to make as many cranes as they could. McConnell made more than 70 cranes on his own time, and even managed 22 in one day. The crane project ends today, (Friday), and the school had already made more than $500 to be donated to the Red Cross. “I feel really bad for them,” said Grade 3 student Lilly Ferguson, when asked about the thousands of earthquake victims.

❚ Email a photo of you holding The TIMES to: timestravellers@mrtimes.com Maple Ridge resident Dawn Lutz, and her life-long companion Teddy Edwards – who’s been with her since birth and travelled everywhere with her – recently took a Panama Canal cruise on the Norweigan Star. Like Lutz, Teddy has travelled five continents. This time, the duo made sure to bring a copy of their hometown newspaper, The TIMES, along on their trip.
A mother-daughter vacation landed a number of Maple Ridge ladies in Waikiki last month (February). Shelley Olivier and Louise Manseau, in the top row, were joined on the trip by Felisha Cairns, and Michelle and Tara McDonald. They made sure to take along a copy of the TIMES, too.

Family frustrated over noise

Carey Bodnar woke up one Saturday morning at 7 a.m. to find an excavator, a front-end loader, a compactor, a steam roller, three dump trucks, and a street cleaner on his quiet rural residential road. He wasn’t surprised – it’s what he has been seeing and hearing for the past three months in conjunction with the sewer line that’s being built to the two prisons. Both his wife and son work night shifts and need to sleep in the day, but with the constant noise, it
loud construction noises. Bodnar doesn’t understand why the Districtowned works yard on 256th Avenue can’t be used instead of a residential neighbourhood. “I can put up with the construction but not a works yard,” said Bodnar, who claims he’s at his “wits’ end” and can see no relief in sight. Andrew Wood, municipal engineer with the District, said it’s up to the construction company to decide where the staging area is placed. “Part of [the problem] is the context of the neighbourhood,” Wood said. “It’s a very tranquil neighbourhood.” But the District, Wood said, is working with residents to find a “balance” between construction and residents’ needs.

has been a challenge. Bodnar’s 90-year-old mother also lives with the family, and she has become intimidated by the construction traffic. “She’s afraid to walk [around] because there are so many dump trucks,” Bodnar said. A staging area for the construction project materialized in January in front of Bodnar’s house on Alouette Road. Six days a week he hears the sifting and grinding of fill that is being used to build the sewer extension to the prisons. “It’s embarrassing – it’s ruining such a beautiful area,” he said. Bodnar attended the open house the District of Maple Ridge held, but he doesn’t remember mention of his street becoming a central hub with trucks driving up and down, and

Our View
Canada’s best party pure magic The TIMES does not normally endorse particular parties or candidates for public office. But on this, the first day of April, 2011, we are moved to give our endorsement to one party in the federal election. We speak of the Natural Law Party of Canada. There are a few hurdles to overcome before the Natural Law Party can sweep into Parliament and bring a new era to Canada. First, it no longer exists. In fact, it hasn’t existed as an official Canadian political party since 2003. Second, its most high-profile candidate, magician Doug Henning, sadly passed away 11 years ago. Third, many Canadians seem to think that a party based on meditation and yogic flying (also known as hopping up and down while sitting tailor-fashion) was “weird” or “crackpot.” But these are minor hurdles to overcome, and a party whose members can fly can surely bound over hurdles! In addition to endorsing the only party to ever promise world peace through meditation, we are calling on Canada’s TV networks to hold a real debate. We have all heard what the leaders of the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, and Bloc have to say. Many, many, many times. Let us hear instead from the parties with fresh, new (and not entirely insane) ideas. Turn over the debates to the marginalized parties, the Libertarians, the Marijuana Party, the Communists and Marxist-Leninists, the Pirate, Rhinoceros, and Western Block parties. Will we hear about the same old solutions to our problems from this group? No. Instead, we will hear wild, new ideas. And possibly see some fist fights, especially if the Communists are next to the Libertarians. Of course, if none of these things come to pass, we shall perhaps be forced to join the April Fool’s Party instead. – M.C.

Provincial politics
Electricity
Recall effort Pure propoganda was flawed Dear editor,
Dear editor,
I must state at the outset that I am a doctrinaire Liberal; the “Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood” type. I have been a Liberal since I was 14 years old; a staunch, but undeclared liberal in a political environment where confession of liberal views could have ensured extended unpaid employment in the coal mines of Hungary. Little did I know that in Canada, Liberalism is not viewed as a doctrine, but as a label. This may excuse my ignorance, that made me vote for Pierre Elliot of the Trudeau clan. Sadly, I didn’t heed one reporter’s view of the Trudeauesque masterpiece, called the “Charter,” as a clever ploy to ensure full employment for members of the judiciary, and the wholesale transfer of Canadian resources to that body. I also dismissed a young gentleman’s in the provincial riding of Delta, while canvassing for support on behalf of the Liberal candidate. His sad opinion of Mr. Campbell proved prophetic. I am still a doctrinaire Liberal, but not a Pierre Elliott or Gordon Campbell liberal. That brings me to the confession of another personal shortcoming: I am a “cheapskate”. Largely due to this “virtue,” I must state unequivocally, that the [now cancelled] recall effort to unseat Marc Dalton is a terrible waste of time and fiscal resources. Let us suppose that the recall effort succeeded and triggers a by-election. No doubt it would be fiercely contested; eating up a lot of time and money, money that could be better employed elsewhere (maybe education or health care). Let us further suppose that the by-election had happened and seat an NDP member in the legislature. We’ll have the luxury of being able to criticize government action, but not influence it. This scenario may also bring about the Liberal government running out their mandate ’til May 2013, and who knows what may happen in the meantime? So to sum it up: for all that time and effort and money that was being invested in the process of recalling Marc Dalton, at the maximum we may have had a change in representation and king size ego trip for the proponents of the recall, but no net benefit for thee and me. P.S. I did sign the anti-HST petition. P. Bandi, Maple Ridge
[More Dalton/recall letters online at www.mrtimes.com]
I’m so offended by Dave Field’s letter to the editor [Hydro power plans worth cost, March 15 Letters, TIMES], I barely know where to begin. This entire letter sounds as though it was coined in the bowels of BC Hydro’s communications division, (ministry of propaganda). The first thing I need to address is this ridiculous statement which is the “banner line” any time BC Hydro wants to rip us off: “However, residential electricity rates in B.C. are currently among the lowest in North America…” What a crock. Our electricity, for the most part, is generated by simply harvesting the weight and volume of our abundant rainfall. We do not use coal, diesel fuel, nuclear fuel, or to any extent, natural gas, thereby rendering the cost of construction, operation, and maintenance of these facilities the most cost-effective of any form of mass electricity on earth. We should not be comparing apples with oranges. Our power production facilities create the smallest “carbon footprint” of any mass electricity production anywhere. Do not tell me we pay less than others. These rate increases are more about placating the independent power producers than the reasons we are being told. After all, that’s who contributed to the Liberals election and re-election campaigns.

An automatic fail Dear editor,
Had a drink at 8 p.m., at 9: 15 p.m. I hit a road block. I wasn’t concerned; I should have been. The police officer could smell it on my breath. I tried at least six times to use the breathalyzer. Couldn’t do it. She said I could. I said I smoke; she said so do I. You can do it. Automatic fail. Refusal to blow. I didn’t refuse, I said. By 9: 30 p.m. my car and my licence were taken. I was in shock. Everyone said get a lawyer. The lawyer explained it was hard to beat unless you have a medical problem. I went to the doctor. He tested my breathing and found out I have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). So I fought it thinking with a lung problem they will agree I didn’t refuse to blow. I lost. That goes to show the police are not only judge, jury, and prosecutor, they are also doctors. Natasha Renyard, Maple Ridge

‘No parking’ signs can prevent fatality Dear editor,
There has been many close calls, screeching brakes, and near-misses on the 26500 block of Ferguson Avenue in Maple Ridge, as parents drop off and pick up their kids from activities at the Girl Guides of Canada’s Camp Kanaka and Serenity Lodge. One particular night recently, there was an accident where a pregnant women – who parked directly across from our driveway – was rear-ended in her van with her children and family. Dozens of cars lined both sides of the roadway itself leaving a dangerous narrow route down Ferguson. This situation is a regular occurrence. A little prevention by the addition of municipal parking signs could prevent a fatality.

Those wanting to see what our best artists in the community have to offer can make their way down to Fraserview Village Hall on April 8. The Garibaldi Art Club is holding its spring show In Pursuit of Excellence, and since it is a judged show, the public will see the cream of the crop. “We have three jurors from the Federation of Canadian Artists,” said Melanie Jane, president of the club. “For this show, everyone is able to enter, but not necessarily all pieces are selected.” Local artist Suzette Fram hopes she will get some of her work in the show, but she won’t know until the pieces are chosen the morning of April 8. “In the end, you have the best the club has to offer,” she said. “Plus it helps you to judge how your work is coming along.” Fram said she likes the

Not all the works will be paintings, as artists can submit in any medium in which they work. “It questions the artist as an individual to put their best foot forward,” said Jane.

They are frequently utilized to season white sauces, and ensure that the appearance of the sauce is not marred with black specs. Green peppercorns are one of my favourites in sauces. They are harvested when they are still very immature, and either dried or preserved in brine. They offer a more natural, temperate flavour, and when brined, are very soft and can be eaten whole. They are great for transforming ordinary gravy into a gourmet peppercorn sauce, with the help of a jigger of brandy or wine. The dried green peppercorns can be re-hydrated to make them pliable to accomplish the same task. They can also be mashed into a paste for other applications. Pink peppercorns are not actually peppercorns in the same way as the above-mentioned examples. They are berries that look similar to the piper nigrum berry, but are sweeter, milder, and more aromatic. They can ripen to a dark red in colour before harvesting. They are great in delicately flavoured recipes, and offer great presentation as well. In light of all the choices you have, it should be apparent that pepper is nothing to sneeze at.

That leaves its sidekick, pepper, in the number one position. Peppercorns are the dried result of the piper nigrum berry, and have been harvested for thousands of years. In ancient times, the value of the pungent spice was even elevated to the degree of being used as trading barter, like currency. The four most popular types of peppercorns dominating our current food markets are black, white, green, and pink. Black peppercorns are obviously the most prevalent, and also the least expensive. They are produced by harvesting and drying the berries before they are fully ripe. The drying process gives them their black hard wrinkled appearance and texture. Black pepper is not only the most popular, but also the most pungent. The best flavour and aroma are obtained by freshly grinding them directly on or in the dish you are preparing. Pre-ground spices always lose their freshness and ability to season as time passes. Logically, fresher is always better. White peppercorns are derived from the same type of berries that the black peppercorns come from, but they are allowed to mature before harvesting. They are then either soaked or washed in water to remove the outer shell, which produces a white peppercorn with a milder taste.

Jennifer Suttis can’t wait to get onstage next week. The 19-year-old Maple Ridge resident, and student at the New Image College of Fine Arts in downtown Vancouver, is no stranger to the stage, but as this is only her second professional musical, she is both nervous and excited. “I was so excited to get the opportunity to work with the Royal City Theatre,” she said, about being offered a part late last year. The cast of about 40 has been rehearsing since January, and now Suttis and the others are looking forward to showing off their hard work. “The set is probably the most challenging part,” said Suttis, as it is quite elaborate, and the cast has less than a week to practice on it before previews begin on April 7. She is confident in her dance steps however, especially as she has been dancing since she was six, and has been taking voice lessons as well. She also took part in Singing in the Rain with Theatre Under the Stars last summer. After school ends on Aug. 19, Suttis said she wants to start auditioning for roles in both TV and film, as well as theatre. But for now, she is focusing on her role as Will Roger’s sister and a member of the Zigfield Follies. “I’m just excited for [everyone] to see the show,” she said. “I’m excited to be out there and perform again for people.” “Everybody is really ready,” laughed director and choreographer Valerie Easton. “They’re chomping at the bit.” The Will Rogers Follies tells the story of Will Rogers, a man who rose from humble beginnings in Oklahoma to perfecting his rope act vaudeville shows, to a newspaper columnist, radio personality, and movie star. Rogers appeared in many of Florenz Ziegfeld productions in the 1920s, and in this musical he
narrates his own life story, which unfolds through a series of grand Ziegfeld Follies production numbers set off by his most famous monologues. Easton said the most challenging part for her and the cast was perfecting the rope tricks, and they had to hire a roping expert to teach them. “It’s very challenging, but also fun for the cast,” she said. This is the first time this musical has been staged in the Lower Mainland, and with a large cast, and an 18-piece orchestra, it is living up to its ‘big spectacle’ style. “I really enjoy the opening number,” she said, “which is called Willmania. It’s a little interactive with the audience as well,” she added. For those who enjoy big, lavish musicals, this will live up to the hype said Easton. “It’s a musical spectacle that everyone will enjoy,” she commented. “There’s things in there for
the kids as well, there’s never a dull moment.” Easton said that although this musical tells the story of a man in the 20s and 30s, the message of the show is still current. “His speech at the end talks about the depression and the stock market crash,” she said. “When you hear the speech it sounds like he could be talking to people today.” The Will Rogers Follies runs at the Massey Theatre, located at 735 Eighth Ave. in New Westminster, with previews taking place on April 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. Performances run Saturday April 9 to 24 at 8 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Matinee performances are Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at masseytheatre.com or by phone at 604-521-5050. They range in price from $20 to $39. Ogloff takes gold Almost 600 athletes competed in the Twisters 16th Annual Invitational in Abbotsford. Maple Ridge’s Shayla Ogloff won gold in her Tyro age category, (born either 1999 or 2000), and took gold in bars, silver on vault and beam, and bronze on floor. At the Surrey Invitational in early March, Ogloff came first overall in the provincial five tyro category, and won gold on bars, silver on beam, and gold on floor. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Nathan Burke knows what Alpo tastes like. He had to eat the dog food once after losing his first wrestling match in 1999. “Luckily Alpo tastes good,” he said, smiling. Now with more than 1,000 matches under his belt, Burke is returning to his old stomping grounds of Westview Secondary to bring the local community a show he says they won’t forget. Burke, also known as Disco Fury, wrestles with All Star Wrestling. He says he has an unquenchable passion for the sport and knew he wanted to be a pro-wrestler since he was three years old. He still has a day job, but he makes plenty of time for his first love. “I started with amateur wrestling at MRSS, then Thomas Haney and finally Westview where I graduated from in 1996,” he said. He remembers asking wrestling coach Bill McCrae, who is still at MRSS, if school wrestling was like pro-wrestling, and McCrae told him “absolutely not.” That didn’t deter Burke. He dabbled in modelling after high school, but found his calling after attending a WWE event in Vancouver. He started training right away. “Wrestling was everything to me at the time,” he said. “Wrestling was my life. It still is 20 years later.” The name Disco Fury came from his first tour in 1999, after the dog food incident, and the name has stuck ever since. He has since wrestled in England, Japan and all over North America. At one point, he was ranked No. 2 in the world for Junior Heavyweights. All Star Wrestling has held an event for Westview in the past, but Burke hopes this one will be bigger and better. “I get to give back to my school,” he said. He will be the title fight against Dylan Millar, a.k.a. Artemis Spencer, who graduated from Westview in 2004. The event aims to raise money for high school students to partici-

Lightning wins Metro Women’s Soccer League held its cup finals last Sunday at the South Surrey Athletic Park. Golden Ears Untied Soccer Club was “well represented” at the league finals on March 27, said Susan Carr, the representative for the GEUSC Women’s League. In addition to a good turnout, the women’s division two Lightning team won the cup. “The game was a 1-1 tie with the Richmond Olympics in regulation time,” said Carr, “and [was] won by the GE Lightning in a shoot-out.” “Our U21 Sporting team also took their cup match to a shootout but was defeated,” she added. That team finished the season in second place in the Silver division. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

The 35-year-old wrestler wants everyone to know this is a family-friendly show and although all the wrestling is real, the characters are very “kid-friendly” and it is enjoyable for all ages. “This is something I wouldn’t be afraid to take my kids to,” he said. “The show will be hard-hitting,

action-packed, there will be cheers and boos, [the audience] will be entertained from the first match to the end match,” he added. The show will also feature the new All Star Wrestling tag team champions who will be defending their title against two Americans, and a female match, which All Star calls Girls Gone Wrestling. Burke said the community has been supportive, namely Boston Pizza, Body by Vi, the Wok Box,
Racers recruiting Cutting Edge Nutrition and All Seasons Tanning. All Star Wrestling will perform at Westview Secondary on Friday, April 8, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for ringside, $12 for general and $10 for Westview students. They are available at Wok Box, Cutting Edge Nutrition and All Seasons Tanning. They are also available at the door next Friday. Westview is located at 20905 Wicklund Ave.
A local speedskating club are looking for anyone interested in joining the team. The Ridge Meadows Racers will hold their early-bird registration April 2, at Maple Ridge Planet Ice between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. No experience is necessary to join this club, and everyone is welcome to be a part of the team. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Cycling
Race expands
A 22 km bike race held on May 7 is now open for registration as a single event.
For cyclists who want to take part in the Race the Ridge Stage Race through Golden Ears Park, but don’t necessarily want to take on the other two stages of the race, now have the perfect opportunity. Race the Ridge, presented by Maple Ridge’s Local Ride Bike Shop, is now open for registration as a single event to a limited field of 60 riders, giving more cyclists the opportunity to experience the scenic course. “The Golden Ears route is one of the most stunning time trial courses in the country,” said Barry Lyster, race organizer and owner of Local Ride. “Opening it to riders who just want to test themselves against the clock and not commit to the other two grueling stages is a great way to make Race the Ridge more accessible to a bigger cross section of cyclists.” The field for time trial only riders will be capped at a maximum of 60 participants. The rolling out-and-back course is walled by towering cedar trees and skirted by rushing streams, all set against a spectacular mountain backdrop, said Lyster. “Of course, racers will have little time to enjoy their surroundings as they push the limits of legs and lungs to log the fastest time.” “This time trial is ideal for riders who are training for bigger events later in the season, like a triathlon or a Gran Fondo,” said Lyster. “It’s a perfect way to gauge fitness and test the legs and bike setup in a race situation.” The time trial kicks off the Race the Ridge Stage Race on Saturday morning, May 7, after which stage race riders will attempt to recharge in time for the Town Core Criterium.

March 08, 1919 – March 27, 2011 Our Dad was born March 8th, 1919 in Wellwood, Manitoba. His parents, David & Isabella (Ferguson) emigrated from County Ayre, Scotland in 1910. He was the last survivor of the six children David and Isabella (Bela) had; Jack, Bill, Winifred, David and Harold. David and Bela moved the family to Vancouver after WWII and finished out their lives there. Dad joined the Canadian Army in 1939 as a private in the Winnipeg Grenadiers and ended up being posted to Hong Kong with “C” Company in late 1941. When Hong Kong was attacked by the Japanese December 8th Dad fought valiantly alongside his friends and comrades until being forced to surrender December 26. After 3½ years as a POW, surviving barbaric treatment and conditions, Dad, along with the other surviving prisoners, was liberated in August 1945. Despite the physical and emotional injuries he suffered during that time Dad never gave up or in. These strong traits carried on throughout his later work for the Department of Veterans Affairs and his home life. After returning from Hong Kong, Dad was a patient in Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver recovering from his POW treatment. It was there that he met and fell in love with his Army nurse, his soon-to-be wife, June Sargent from Toronto. Despite having lost most of his eyesight as a result of his POW treatment, he was able to provide a safe and stable home for his family in the Vancouver area. He always had a smile or joke for whoever was within range. Dad developed a close group of caring friends including his long time fishing buddy, Walt Goresky and old neighbourhood pal, Don Wood. Over the years Dad loved fishing, curling, bowling, and cribbage and just enjoyed having a good old “bull session” with his many friends at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88 in Maple Ridge. Dad is now at rest – he died at 9:17 pm Sunday, March 27, 2011 at his care home in Maple Ridge, BC. Claude and June had three children: Russell (Gerry) of Lethbridge, Alberta; Denis (Yolanda) of Victoria, BC and Donna (Brent) of Maple Ridge, BC. His kids gave him six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who all so loved Grandpa Corbett. We miss him already. He was a good man who did his best. Service is at 11 a.m. on Tuesday the 5th of April at Garden Hill Funeral Chapel, 11765 - 224th Street, Maple Ridge, BC, V2X 6A5. Parking is in the rear of the building. Tea reception will be at the funeral home. Instead of flowers, donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind would be appreciated.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Be ambitious, this week and the next two. You could grab a promotion, or elevate your worth in the eyes of higher-ups (or cultivate a VIP and gain a prestigious new client, contract or business opening, etc.). This week starts with a jolt (of luck or nerves or ambition) Sunday. You’ll have to combine or merge competing situations to succeed – probably a need to reconcile home with career, gain your spouse’s or kids’ co-operation, etc. The potential for success is tremendous, so make every effort! This week begins 15 years of true understanding, spiritual recognition, and, resulting, true love. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: You’ve suffered 15 years of gullibility, deception, disillusionment and suspicion. (On the positive side, 15 years of spiritual awakening.) This week marks the end of that – though such long trends tend to dissolve slowly, now is the turn-around time. Think, contemplate the broad picture, and you should sense some clues to this change. The next 15 years bring a heightened sense of poetic mystery and nuance, sexual longing, deep spiritual intuition and subtle glamour – a better influence! The next eight years also feature mental awareness, and true love – wedded love. Sunday reveals! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sunday’s the centre point of a huge life change. The actual events can have occurred in March, or can happen over the weeks ahead. But they centre on this day, and this week. The events: a financial rearrangement or debt, a sexual lust or liaison, a commitment, a lifestyle change, a health diagnosis or surgery, a piece of detective work or research project. It’s destined to change your life. You’ll have to overcome financial “slowness” or caution. Believe in your luck! Be ambitious late week. Fifteen years of unhealthy relationships end: 15 years of “true relationship” begins.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your energy, charisma and clout reach a yearly high. I didn’t add “effectiveness” because we’re in the middle of a Mercury retro period, a bad time to start anything new (lasting to April 23). Even so, your luck is strongly buoyant, and the “payoff” for past efforts or good deeds could arrive now (or anytime to early June). If you’re single, someone is attracted! Your charisma and energy are doubly strong Sunday/ Monday – “lightning strikes!” Realize that you have to co-operate with a powerful, somewhat sluggish, but perhaps elevated individual. Grab the money Tuesday. A lucky week! Taurus April 20-May 20: Government agencies or “head office” steer your possibilities Sunday/Monday. Go with the flow. New circumstances, new trends are entering your private world – now to 2019. You might soon be working with or attending a large corporation or institution. Don’t be fazed by this – you have the skills required. If stress builds, learn to relax, play golf, yoga, whatever. Fifteen years of career worry ends; 15 years of “wide friendships” begins. Rest, lie low Sunday/Monday. Something lucky brews beneath the surface or behind the scenes before Thursday. Chase money Thursday onward. Gemini May 21-June 20: Wishes come true, especially Sunday, especially old wishes. Romance, or a flirty friendship, or happiness of another sort seems imminent – so does fulfilment around a legal, far travel, international or intellectual matter. But be realistic, cautious also – a “go slow” signal exists. Could mean “watch what you wish for,” or it might hint that wishes are fulfilled, but in a quiet or sober way. Your popularity is rising, friendly romance occurs, new friends come, especially Thursday onward. Optimism soars! (Retreat, rest Monday eve to midweek.) Fifteen years of “true career” begins.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Start nothing new before April 23. Look to the past or to ongoing ventures, relationships. Your success is inextricably tied to relationships, and/or to opportunities, relocation, litigation, negotiation, fame or the public. Sunday can bring a jolt in these – e.g., love at first sight – but without the infatuation, gooey-eyed stuff – this is alert, exciting, alive, realistic. Downplay your conservative, reluctant, skeptical or cautious side. (If someone says, “You look sad,” it’s a clue to brighten up!) Love “elevates” late week. Your employment picture changes now to 2025. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Something unexpected happens at work this week, especially Sunday. Follow safety procedures, don’t work while tired, be patient, careful with electricity, machines and computers, or avoid them if you can. I’ve emphasized the dangers, but there’s also luck here: you might be called into work because someone didn’t show, or you’re the trouble-shooter in an emergency, etc., which can set you up for praise, promotion now or soon. Be good-natured! Fifteen years of love’s obsessive puzzlement ends; 15 years of love’s good sweetness begins. You’ll believe me, come June/July and 2012! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Sunday could provide a love shock. It’s illuminating. But it will only be lucky if you can balance impulse with caution (without letting caution win) and money or earnings considerations (or possessions) with your need to express yourself, to be yourself. (Sartre said we’re the slave of our possessions.) All that said, this is a hugely lucky week (and month, and quarter) for romance, children, creativity, school, travel, beauty, art and speculation! Opportunities arise Thursday/ Friday. Fifteen years of indecision, rootlessness end; 15 years of “deep home” begin.

Apr. 3 - April 9 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing new before April 23. A jolt might come to your domestic or property arena Sunday. (This day is merely the centre of two months of “jolt.”) Be careful with electricity around the house this day. On another level, events can jump-start you into a whole decade of new (money-earning) property dealings, new landscaping, new security initiatives (e.g., RSPs) – despite the word “new” your success now will come from reprising a past goal, condition or contact. Believe in life, buy a home! Fifteen years of money anxiety end; 15 years of “chatty” friendship begin. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: You might make a lively new friend this week. This person will not become a life-mate (or not a good one) but you can have lots of fun together. (The problem: a sadness or sombre streak in this person is a clue indicating their ability/tendency to restrict you or to connect too easily to your hidden side.) Despite this, real love is likely. Don’t start any new projects, especially in communications, paperwork or travel, before April 23. Your luck will come from past contacts, and it could be very bright luck! Be restful midweek. Romance, creative surges Thursday onward. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Start nothing new before April 23: deal with past or ongoing projects and relationships. A money, income or possession situation could hold three things (all of some): great luck, career import and “the future” of your earnings (for eight years). This last is highlighted Sunday, when a “jolt” might accompany it. If you can get past a certain skepticism about your own work or your own goals, this jolt could represent a splendid new path in earnings. (This path likely represents working with management or in government, large bureaucracies, charities or institutions.) A lucky week! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
