Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton would like to see Kevin Falcon as the new premier of B.C. He came out in support of Falcon as leader of the BC Liberals on Friday, as the party looks to replace Gordon Campbell within the next two months. Falcon is a good listener and has been responsive to concerns Dalton has brought forward, the MLA said. “I’ve found him to be very responsive to me as an MLA when I’ve brought constituents’ issues to him,” Dalton added. In addition to Falcon, Christy Clark, Mike de Jong, George Abbott and Moira Stilwell are running for the leadership position. As a minister, Dalton said Falcon listens and is interested in teamwork, adding that he Marc Dalton looks for solutions. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Dalton found in conversations with Falcon that they had similar views on topics like law and order. Dalton said he tends to “lean more conservative,” which aligns with Falcon’s politics. While Clark has suggested the provincial legislature should have a free vote on the controversial harmonized sales tax, Dalton takes the same stand as Falcon, that the issue should go to a referendum. “We’ve had a vote – we debated,” Dalton said about the legislature. “Now it’s time for the people to vote on it.” The people of B.C. “are in the mood for this debate,” he added. “They want good information – they don’t want spin,” Dalton said. The HST is a simpler tax, which costs the government $30 million less to administer, while businesses in B.C. will save $200 million in red tape reduction with the new tax, Dalton said. He called the provincial sales tax, that was absorbed into the HST, an antiquated “horse-and-buggy” tax, which was complicated for retailers. He added that B.C. would also lose its competitive edge if the HST is abolished, including in the film industry. On climate change, Dalton said B.C. is going much faster than other jurisdictions and the province should wait to see what others are doing first. Falcon is prepared to take a look at the carbon tax and its scheduled increase for July, he added. Dalton brings the number of MLAs endorsing Falcon to 12. The leadership vote is set for Feb. 26.

Sprinkler saves home A fire in the kitchen of a home in the 13100 block of 239B Street was started by the family dog and would have been “disastrous” if the sprinkler had not turned on, according to the Maple Ridge fire chief. The family had done some baking earlier on Monday morning and they left their baked goods on top of their gas stove and went out. The family dog, in an attempt to get at the baking, jumped up and turned the stove on which started the fire. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Thirty-five turkeys were cooked and deboned and served with stuffing, potatoes, gravy, sugar peas, and cranberry sauce to about 290 people at the Caring Place on Friday night. The annual dinner attracted many people who regularly go to the Caring Place, but with more families needing services, there were 52 children as well. About 30 volunteers helped with cooking, serving meals, and cleaning up afterwards – which included a big pile of dirty dishes. During dinner, Santa Claus arrived with gifts and candy canes to hand out. “For us, it’s just so good to spread the emotion of community,” said Darrell Pilgrim, director of the Caring Place Ministries. The majority of the turkeys were donated by local grocery stores, Pilgrim said, and many food items came from donors in the community. Toy donations also came from around the community, Pilgrim said. While the majority of people served by the Caring Place are men in their 30s and 40s, Pilgrim said they are seeing more families in need accessing their services. The Caring Place has hooked

These are often families the staff at the Caring Place know, or families who don’t connect with the Christmas hamper society. While they’ve had problems finding enough sponsor families this year, Pilgrim said, they always manage to provide all the families with a Christmas hamper, even if they come to them on Thursday, Dec. 23.

Pony killing prompts call for change

Family was told a conservation officer wouldn’t come until “blood’s been drawn.” Andrea Woo

Postmedia Network Inc.

A Maple Ridge father is calling for a policy change after his children’s pony was killed in a suspected cougar attack Thursday night – one week after he had reported seeing a cougar in his backyard to conservation officers. Kevin Scott said a conservation

officer told him during his initial call that there was not enough reason to attend the property. “They said there was nothing they could do until blood’s been drawn, because nothing had happened at that point – just the sighting,” Scott said Friday. The pony, a three-year-old Appaloosa named Prince, belonged to Scott’s four children, who range in age from eight to 14. It was the smallest and friendliest of the four horses the family kept on its farm. Prince was usually the first to arrive when the family called them into the barn, and Scott said it was

peculiar he didn’t come trotting up Thursday night. “We waited until this morning, looked out there this morning and all the coyotes were feeding on him,” Scott said. “Basically the only thing that was left was the head of the horse and the skeleton.” Scott theorizes a cougar was the culprit, as coyotes probably would have been spooked by the three bigger horses. He called conservation officers again Friday morning and waited “half a day” until they arrived. The officers assembled leghold

traps using Prince’s carcass as bait – in view from the family’s house. Scott is now calling for a policy change, saying an officer should at least inspect the scene or set a trap when a cougar sighting is reported – especially if there are children in the area. Terry Myroniuk, a conservation officer who attended Scott’s property on Friday, said if the cougar was spotted in a highly residential area, or displayed an interest in people – which they typically do not – officers would have responded.

Vandals target organic shop Organic World has had its windows broken twice in the past five months.

The waitress described one of the men as Indo-Canadian descent and about 6 ft tall, while the other man was Caucasian and about 5 ft 5 in tall. “She saw them throw rocks through the window, [then] they got back in their car and left,” said Prasad. The owner said he has an idea of who one of the people may be, but he does not understand why someone would do this. “Most of my customers are all happy customers,” he said. Police said the neighbourhood is fairly well patrolled and the shop is in a prominent location. They brought the police dogs out the night the vandalism occurred, but they were unable to locate any leads. The police investigation is ongoing. Prasad said he is going to move his cameras so that if anything like that happens again, suspects will be recorded. Anyone with information about this vandalism can call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251, or CrimeStoppers at 1800-222-8477.

Nothing appears to have been stolen, but Denis Prasad, the owner of Organic World in Maple Ridge, is getting increasingly annoyed with people breaking his windows for no reason. About five months ago, someone threw rocks in the front window of his Dewdney Trunk Road shop. Again on Tuesday morning, the back windows of the organic eatery were broken. “It was just after 1 a.m., the alarm company called me,” said Prasad. Although the identity of the suspects is unknown, Prasad said one of his waitresses saw what happened. “She lives just down the block,” he said, “and she saw a dark burgundy mini-van park and two men got out.”

Our View

Good time to start fresh For most people, Christmas and its constellation of associated holidays are a frantic time. Time to shop for friends and family, then hunt for deals on Boxing Day. Time to hit the grocery store, maybe the liquor store, to get the ingredients for that perfect holiday feast. For others, unfortunately, it’s time to take advantage of the massive holiday shopping spree. Police everywhere are issuing their usual holiday warnings: lock your car, keep presents in the trunk, watch out for suspicious characters. No matter how careful everyone is, of course, someone’s Christmas memories will be tainted. They’ll remember the broken window, the missing presents, the ransacked car, the police report. We could rant and condemn the thieves who cause such pain. But, in the spirit of the season, instead we’ll ask them to make a change. No one grows up thinking that they’ll spend the holiday season breaking and entering, trading stolen goods for a few dollars or a quick fix. It’s a demeaning, miserable existence. It’s the result of very bad choices, some that they made for themselves, and some that were made for them, often at a young age. The good news is that, at this time of year, people are more willing than ever to help when a life needs to be turned around. Our communities are filled with organizations that reach out a helping hand, from government agencies to non-profits like the Salvation Army’s shelters, to local churches, to food banks. Even the RCMP can help point someone in need of a new direction towards help. Lives have momentum, and turning one fueled by drugs and crime must feel like trying to turn around an ocean liner with a canoe paddle. But others have done it. There are those who know how to chart the course, how to steer through the sharp rocks. This Christmas, if you need help, please ask. If you are asked for help, please give. – M.C.

Tax increase ‘criminal’ Dear editor,

Maybe this is not the time of year to be complaining about our ever-increasing property taxes, (or maybe not). These excessive increases seem to make the ever-shrinking pay cheque even that much smaller. So, what are we to expect from our local politicians and bureaucrats? If the property taxes “must” go up just to “hold the line,” then we need to expect all of those down at city hall to produce better results. It is easy for anybody to simply cave in to increased costs and pass them on to the taxpayer. The challenge is to find ways to cut those costs and reduce some of the services. I will give an example: When BC Hydro decides (as a result of Gordon Campbell giving away our water resources to independent power producers in return for campaign donations) they must increase our electricity costs, the District of Maple Ridge must appear before the

Charity

BC Utilities Commission with a well thought out objection. The same is the case with our school board. Where are they when these proposals for increased costs are brought before the commission? It is the responsibility of all those in city hall and the school board to resist increases in operating costs. Take a stand, make it very public, and refuse to take “no” for an answer. This holds true for all cost increases to the taxpayer. Why is no one listening to the taxpayer? By the way, a 5.61-per-cent increase in property taxes is far from “conservative.” As far as I am concerned it is “criminal”. To all those who actually do care about the fate of the poor and middle-class… Merry Christmas.

Give to Hunter proposes animals killing libraries this year Dear editor,

Dear editor,

This holiday season, I am challenging all of the Lower Mainland’s animal lovers to donate items such as collars, leashes, toys, jackets, bedding, grooming supplies and toys to local animal rescues and advocacy groups. As a young woman already involved in animal rescue and employed by a pet store, I spend my days helping people and their pets with their day-to-day needs. Through my foster work, I know from experience how shorthanded well-meaning rescue centres can be. Non-profits do not make the kind of cash they sometimes need to pay for vet bills, let alone warm dog beds or a simple collar. Through the generosity of my boss and the support of my fellow co-workers, we managed to put together five large boxes full of brand new collars, leashes, harnesses and grooming supplies. There are thousands upon thousands of animals that will spend this Christmas alone. Donating anything, big or small, is one of the many ways that we can help them this year.

In response to M.A. Muscat’s letter [Hunting must be banned, Dec. 14 letters, The TIMES]. After reading your letter about your experience on the dike, it bothers me, as a hunter, that a negative light is shed on a “senseless tradition.” The saying that “one bad apple can spoil the bunch,” applies to everything in life, and hunting is no exception. The matter is made worse when emotionally charged phrases like “shotgun-wielding varmint,” “testosteronefired,” and “shot-filled carcass” are used. There are a number of things our society does not need. Libraries are not needed, as all the information you need can be found on the web. Devices like “Kindle” let you buy and store all the books you’ll ever need. Little girls baking a pie or cookies with grandma is no longer needed either. The stores are full of baked goods that are much cheaper than making them. Sounds crazy doesn’t it? Well to some, so too does “bringing an end to this senseless tradition.” For some of us, the smell of neoprene waders, rubber boots, and coffee in the crisp predawn air, is the same as the smell of cookies baking in the oven. The lessons passed from my father to me, and now from me to my son, are not at all senseless. Decoy placement, calling techniques, water, boat, and gun safety, responsible shot selection, proper game handling and preparation, is equal to the measuring of flour, dangers of a hot oven, and pride of making something with your own two hands. Hunting is NOT just about “killing,” but letters like yours portray it as such. The dikes and the marsh are meant for all to enjoy. There are plenty of parks, dikes, and nature for walking in, that hunters have no access to, nor do we need to. In closing, thank you for painting us all with the same brush. Tonight, we’ll be having roast duck, with all the trimmings, lovingly prepared by my wife from a duck my son and I got a few weeks ago. Then for dessert, we’re having some cookies my daughter made at my mother-in-law’s house, during a “grandma’s day” they had. Then later, I’m going to curl up with a good book I picked up from the library… there’s just something about the “feel and smell” of an old book, that makes it hard to put down. I guess that’s another “senseless tradition” that I’m not willing to let go of.

We’re Open for Winter Registration! Lauren Larbalestier, a Grade 1 student at Eric Langton Elementary, donated $140 to the Christmas hamper society, presenting it in person to society co-chairs Tom Cameron and Lorraine Bates.

from Eric Langton marked her sixth birthday by having a party. But instead of asking for traditional gifts, she asked kids to bring toonies in the amount they’d have spent on a gift. There were two jars, and half the money went to Lauren to buy gifts. The other half went to charity. “We spoke a lot about charity and how important it is about giving back and supporting our neighbourhood where we live,” Stephanie said. When all was collected, young Lauren was able to present the hamper society with a jar full of toonies totally $140. “It was dazzling,” said hamper co-chair Tom Cameron, “Anyone at that age, who wants to share their birthday wish with other kids, it’s monumental.” He added that local kids have been incredibly generous this holiday season.

When six-year-old Lauren Larbalestier was born, her parents Stephanie and Julian knew what it was to go without. Julian was in school full-time, and they had to turn to a local Christmas bureau for help putting a couple gifts under the tree and dinner in their tummies. Today, Lauren’s parents are gushing with pride to see their little girl giving back by donating to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society. “Lauren thought this would be a great type of charity to support, as no child should go without a gift under the tree,” her mother explained. Earlier this fall, the little Grade oner

Kettle donations down

The Christmas Kettle Campaign has raised only half of the $73,000 goal. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

With only a handful of days left until Christmas, the Salvation Army is only at 50 per cent of its goal for money raised from the kettle campaign. The Maple Ridge-based Salvation Army church set a goal at the beginning of this

campaign to raise $73,000 and it is currently sitting at only $36,000, said Darrell Pilgrim, director of the Salvation Army Caring Place. “We know that everyone is struggling in this economy,” said Pilgrim. Donations are collected by volunteers who staff kettles located outside popular shopping destinations in the region. All of the funds collected stay in the community and go toward the community meal program, which serves between 9,000 and 10,000 meals every month.

❚ Email your photos with The TIMES to: timestravellers@mrtimes.com.

Wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all our friends and valued customers.

Hometown paper well travelled While many are heading off to exotic destinations for Christmas, or soon after the holidays, Yvonne and Bill Jamieson and Jane and Stuart Johnson recently returned home to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. They travelled to the Karmina Palace in Manzanillo, Mexico. Likewise, Rod and Robyn Lang returned from a trip in China and Tibet. When preparing for the trip, each of these couples was sure to pack a copy of The TIMES. The Langs carried it with them throughout their adventures in China, then had their picture taken with their hometown newspaper in front of the Potala Palace in Tibet. Don’t forget to take a copy of your hometown newspaper along with you on your next vacation, take a picture, then send it to us upon your return.

Business

Milestone reached

Did you take some snow photos?

by Amy Judd

ajudd@mrtimes.com

After a rigorous three days of testing this fall, and countless hours of course work, two local students are now well on their way to becoming chartered accountants. Lixin Chen and Noel Isberg, who both studied at Meyers Norris Penny LLP in Surrey, passed the national Uniform Evaluation (UFE), according to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC (ICABC) and the CA School of Business (CASB). “On behalf of the institute’s council, I would like to congratulate these students for successfully passing the UFE,” said Peter Norwood, FCA, president of the ICABC. “We welcome them to the ranks of chartered accountants.”

A lonely snowman stood atop the pitching mound at Harris Road Park earlier this month, the last remnant of the first snowfall for the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows area. With the threat of more snow to come during the holidays, we thought we’d invite you to take out your camera and grab some shots. Do you have local snow pictures that you’d like to share with TIMES’ readers? Email a high resolution, colour image to editorial@mrtimes.com. Include the photographer’s name and details about who or what is in the picture, where it was taken, as well as your contact information.

Flames battle back in shootout

Maybe an impending Christmas party distracted some of the players during a game against Squamish Friday night. by Amy Judd

ajudd@mrtimes.com

After a two-goal loss against the Squamish Wolf Pack on Friday night, the Ridge Meadows Flames defeated the North Delta Devils in a shootout on Saturday. With an almost equal number of shots on goal, the junior B hockey team was not able to pull through for a win on Friday night, as they lost 5-3 against the Squamish Wolf Pack. Sean Kavanagh was named the second star of the game after scoring the second goal for the local team, but the Flames couldn’t keep the goals coming for the win. “I just didn’t think we were focused,” said Flames coach Tavis Eaton. “We had too many other distractions.” The Flames did have their Christmas party on Friday night and Eaton said some of the players were perhaps too focused on that, but that’s also part of the learning curve. “Squamish deserved to win,” said Eaton. “They outworked us most of the night.” After celebrating the season so far at the Christmas party, the Flames were able to redeem themselves against the North Delta Devils with a 5-4 win in a shootout. Eaton said goalie Tyler Klassen handled the shootout pressure with ease and did not let one goal through. “Tyler was great,” said Eaton, “he played excellent.” Eaton said Saturday’s game was a good game, even though the number of penalties almost hurt the local team. “Every time we seemed to get going, we’d lose to a silly penalty,” said Eaton. Tristano Falbo took the most penalties in the second half for fighting with a Devils player. Danny Brandys, Paul Piluso and Matthew Hargreaves all scored in the shootout however, leaving the Flames with a victory going into their final game before Christmas this Thursday against the Richmond Sockeyes in Richmond.

Flames goaltender, Tyler Klassen, deflected a shot away from his net during a second-period penalty kill at Friday’s home game. The Flames gave up a late third-period goal and then an empty net goal in the 5-3 loss. The next home game is Dec. 30 versus the Port Moody Black Panthers at Planet Ice.

Nothing sour for lemonade lad

Turner Vink, 12, has great plans to grow his award-winning business. by Teija Beck

editorial@mrtimes.com

Bigger and better. That’s the goal for Turner Vink with his successful (and award-winning) lemonade stand business. For the past five years, Turner has been running his stand, with the help of his grandmother, at the Haney Farmers Market in Maple Ridge. “I used to sell lemonade on my alley where I used to live, but then my nana got the idea to go bigger,” Turner said. “I guess selling lemonade is a very important thing nowadays.” Turner has never regretted moving his stand off the roadside and into the farmers market. He said the small-town atmosphere and the friendly people there make the Haney Farmers Market an ideal place to sell lemonade. “It’s a small community thing in Maple Ridge, it’s in the middle of town, and [I] know everybody who’s selling stuff there, so everyone is friends,” he told The TIMES. On Nov. 4, he was awarded the Ridge Meadows Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur Award at a ceremony at the Meadow Gardens Golf Club. At 12 years old, Turner was the youngest businessperson to be nominated for an award, but he noted that he has had his stand longer than some of the other nominees have been in business. “[I] get regular customers too that always come every Saturday to do their grocery shopping,” he said. On his slowest day, Turner sold only 13 glasses of lemonade, but he talks animatedly about his more successful days, like Canada Day, when he sold about 200 glasses. “The people who cut the cake for the Canada Day celebrations will bring it over to the market, so you don’t even have to leave the market to take part in the cake and everything,” Turner said. “It’s nice because it brings the crowd and it all kind of goes together into one big event.” Turner faced some tough competition last Canada Day from Lemon Heaven, a lemonade business he said he’s seen at the PNE before. “They were just across from us, so we thought that might cut into our business, but it did not at

all,” Turner said, with a smile. “No competition. I went over there and tried a glass, and it was like $3 for a glass not much bigger than ours. Ours was a lot better.” Turner sells his lemonade – made from scratch using a top-secret recipe – for $1 a glass, and he donates 25 cents from each glass to charity. “This year we chose the

Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, same as last year,” Turner said. “We collected over $400 for them this year. That’s our most ever.” Turner is proud to have won the young entrepreneur award in its inaugural year. He described how winning was an emotional experience. “As it got closer to the young entrepreneur of the year award, my stomach started feeling all weird because I had no idea what was going to happen,” he said. “When they called my name, I went up there and it felt like the world was just spinning,” he said. “I just had no idea that this was going to happen, so I was really excited.” Turner is looking forward to making his lemonade business even better next summer. “It’ll be bigger and better,” he said. “It’ll be good.” “We add something new every year,” he said. “I don’t have any ideas yet, so we’ll have to brainstorm. The [lemonade] recipe is not going to change, nothing like that.” In previous years, Turner and his grandmother have sold lemon squares that they made together, and this year they embroidered their logo on shirts to make uniforms. So how does it feel to be famous? “Interesting, actually,” Turner said. “I thought it would be a little differ-
