The 11th annual Christmas Haven brought cheer to about 300 people who would have otherwise been alone for the holidays. by Teija Beck

The weather outside on Christmas Eve may have been frightful, but the mood at Christmas Haven that night was most definitely delightful. This year, Christmas Haven – held at the Maple Ridge Baptist Church – opened its doors and its kitchens to almost 300 people. Volunteers served up a free turkey dinner, presents, entertainment, and even a visit from Santa Claus. “We got lots of positive feedback about the meal,” said Christmas Haven chair Kathy Quayle. “A lot of people told me it was excellent. Not just good, but excellent.” The dinner was catered by Cosmic Catering in Maple Ridge. Quayle said the help of 40 to 50 volunteers made the event run smoothly with “zero problems.” “The volunteers did an outstanding job,” she said. “The cleanup went very well. The whole event was a success.” A few days before Christmas

Eve, Quayle said the event was receiving fewer donations than anticipated, but the last-minute contributions of many generous Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows citizens helped out.
“I would say we probably just about covered out expenses,” she said. “We’ll probably still get some this week at the [Maple Ridge] Leisure Centre.”
Quayle said the event went extremely well and helped make Christmas a little brighter for many community residents. “The special part was just to see the kids enjoying them-
selves,” she said, “especially the kids you can tell don’t have much. We just spoiled them. We got some fabulous gift donations... you could tell people had put some thought into it.”

Metro Vancouver has lost control of one of the region’s smallest but most important parks – Grant Narrows, at Pitt
Lake – in a dispute with the province that is raising concerns about the vulnerability of parks to first nations land claims. Grant Narrows is only about 11 hectares, but holds strategic importance as the main boat-launching site to several recreational areas: Pitt Lake and its private cabins; the upper Pitt River, the Lower Mainland’s best wilderness fishing stream; Pinecone Burke Provincial Park and Widgeon Slough canoe area; and the
west side of Golden Ears Provincial Park. But its future is clouded after Metro Vancouver could not reach an agreement on a new Crown lease with the B.C. government due to outstanding land claims to the area by the Katzie First Nation. Metro Vancouver officially washes its hands of the Grant Narrows park as of Dec. 31, leaving the province in charge and the prospect of Katzie Frist Nations involvement in the near future.

Shining a light on special kids

A new picture website has been launched to shine a light on “The Tiny Lights” and their stories. The non-profit organization called The Tiny Light Foundation provides free professional photography sessions for children and families faced with life-altering diagnoses. Its site, www.thetinylight.com, focuses on Canadian children, showing one of the more than 100 shots, on average, taken of them during their photo sessions. The single photos are accompanied with each child’s story. The Tiny Light also has a Facebook page that posts as many as eight photos of the young models. Each family receives a disc of photos of their child. The Tiny Light president Melissa DePape’s daughter Nevaeh has Down syndrome. Nevaeh also underwent open heart surgery at six months old. Not only is Nevaeh the website’s first Tiny

Light, she is the light behind The Tiny Lights, says Angela StephenDewhurst, who is helping to promote the website. DePape took photos of her daughter in the ICU ward following Nevaeh’s open heart surgery. She said the images are priceless. “Looking back at the pictures, I am so glad I have them,” she said. “You can see how far she has come.”
DePape said the day-to-day costs of having a special needs child is only part of the challenge. Time is also a factor. This makes having any professional photos done of a child an unaffordable luxury. “Rushing back and forth to appointments, to specialists, to weight checkups, getting meds, you kind of lose track of time,” she related. “One parent has to stay home. A lot of these kids, there are very short times in which they are healthy. It’s important to get in, [take the pictures] and get out. It’s best for their families.” The site’s most recent Tiny Light is Carter, a boy diagnosed with autism. And Carter is the first Shining Light from Maple Ridge. Carter’s Tiny Lights bio, published on the site, begins as follows: This is Carter. Carter is a happy, and now thanks to successful treatment that worked for him, healthy six-year-old boy. Carter’s journey with autism began before his second birthday. His parents knew long before diagnosis. When their suspicions were confirmed they were heartbroken and saddened. Frustrated with no real answers, they began researching on their own after learning about Bio-Medical treatment. For Carter, this was a major turning point. Carter’s health issues required him
to have blood tests every 12 weeks as detoxification made him very sick. To watch Carter through these times of pain and discomfort has been very difficult. While this family’s journey has been a painful one, it has also taught them a lot… DePape said a recurring theme with many of the mothers of the children is they weren’t getting answers from doctors and had to seek them out themselves. Stephen-Dewhurst said simply getting these family’s stories out and inspiring just one person to “fight a little harder” is the goal. The foundation is on the lookout for photographers offering to volunteer their skills. Photographers willing to use or donate their studio space are also being sought. Most of the photography is taking place in Alberta and in the Lower Mainland. DePape is currently the site’s only B.C. photographer and said she is willing to go, “anywhere they [the families] want me to go,” for photo shoots. “They get everything that a client would pay full price for,” DePape said. Van fire shuts Dewdney A gas leak at a filling station started a flash fire, wreaking traffic havoc. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
A Maple Ridge couple’s plans to take a trip to California were disrupted on Monday when their camper van caught on fire, closing down Dewdney Trunk Road. Alfred Rusnak was getting his propane tank filled at the ATH Gas Bar on Dewdney when a propane leak started at the point where the hose attaches to the filling tank. This prompted a quick call to the Maple Ridge fire department. After the fire department arrived, the leaking gas ignited and caused a flash fire, which in turn set the van on fire. The camper van was close to the main propane filling tank. As the firefighters sprayed the 1986 Chevy camper van and adjacent pro-
pane tank, smoke filled the air and foam spread along the road, which was shut down between 227th and Edge Streets. The department will be investigating how the fire started, but their immediate concern was to make sure the gas station’s large propane tank didn’t catch on fire, as it was next to the burning van. Everyone from the building to the west was evacuated as a precautionary measure – no one was injured during the fire. Provincial gas inspectors from the B.C. Safety Authority arrived on scene. The couple was planning to leave today (Tuesday) for California in the van, which Rusnak said was an economical way to travel. Their trip was to supposed to last “as long as it takes,” he said. Rusnak has owned the van for about five years, and he and his wife have travelled in B.C. and down the coast in it. “I guess I can rent me another one,” Rusnak said. But he added the van has been a great vehicle for all the trips he and his wife have made in it.

The new initiative, dubbed Snow Angels, aims to help people who are unable to shovel snow themselves keep their walkways safe and avoid being fined by the City. “We’re anticipating that it’s going to be a difficult winter with lots of snow,” said Dave Speers, events program assistant for Maple Ridge Parks and Leisure. City bylaws require the owners of residences and businesses to clear the public sidewalks in front of their properties by no later than 10 a.m. after a snowfall. Speers pointed out that while it is a district bylaw, it’s also the “neighbourly thing to do.” Speers said he was approached by Pitt Meadows resident Anne Friendly about the need for people to help out their less mobile neighbours. “It was after the heavy snowfall a couple of years ago, I asked the City if they have any kind of [neighbourly snow removal] program and they said no,” said Friendly, whose comment helped get the Snow Angels program underway. All Snow Angels will be recognized with a special pin and a letter of recognition during National Volunteer Week in April 2011. “It’s a great opportunity at the neighbourhood level to meet new neighbours,” Speers said, “and from the parks and leisure perspective it fits with the values of healthy living and building a sense of community. More fun to play it safe If you’re a party animal and you haven’t done so already, it’s not too late to makes plans to survive New Year’s celebrations. It’s always a good idea, after all, to make it all the way home after a party, without killing yourself or someone else… or having to take a side trip to the nearest police station. While B.C.’s Solicitor General and others in authority have expressed second thoughts, police officers have demonstrated that they are quite serious about the province’s relatively new drinking-and-driving laws, implemented last September – especially police officers who have grown tired of cleaning up the messes left behind by drunks who were absolutely certain they were “good to drive.” Of course, you could plan out a strategy to contest the constitutionality of a provincial law that penalizes you below the federal limit of .08 per cent blood alcohol. Good luck. First you’ll have to ensure that you’ve drunk just the right amount of alcohol to put you between .08 and .06 per cent (actually .05 per cent, but breathalyzers have been re-calibrated to provide a margin of error in favour of errant drivers). Otherwise, the federal laws get you anyway. Then you’ll have to make it all the way to a roadblock – or catch the attention of a patrolling officer – without getting into an accident. You can’t be visibly impaired, otherwise once again, the feds get you. Under the Criminal Code, if you’re impaired, you’re impaired, no matter how little you’ve been drinking. Then you can go through all the inconvenience, expense, and stress of having your car impounded, fetching up a lawyer, preparing for an expensive trial – and keeping your fingers crossed that, in the end, the judge will agree with you. You know, it’s far easier and far less stressful to make arrangements for a safe ride home. And the bonus is that you can enjoy the entire evening without having to cross your fingers. – B.G.

Now, you may disagree with the principles of hunting – I don’t know. But I support and respect your right to that opinion. It should be noted that education and savvy resource management are the keys to the future of – and the face of – hunting and fishing today. Not some yahoo with a 12 gauge. As a volunteer parent for the 1st Pitt Meadows Scouts, we would like to say thank you to the residents of Pitt Meadows for donating their recycle bottles for our recent fundraising bottle drive. The campaign raised funds for our local group, while teaching our cubs practical environmental responsibilities. We also would like to express our heartfelt gratitude, once again, to those who supported our annual Scouts popcorn drive. These events help showcase scouts as a visible presence in our community and other community organizations deserve equal recognition for their community spirit. All participants in bottle drives, popcorn campaigns, or apple-selling events should be proud of their tireless efforts including the proud devotion of both our group leaders and parents. Organizations like Scouts, 4-H club, girl guides, and others are invaluable assets in the global arena, and we should encourage our kids to join such programs like these or sport teams to mould the next generation of responsible law-abiding citizens. I do feel sorry for the kids who lost their pony [Pony killing prompts call for change, Dec. 21, The TIMES]. But the owners of the pony live rural and so do I. Why did the father wait till the next day to look for the pony? We have the odd black bear here, and lots of coyotes, and there may have been some cougars here. If, every time one of those animals comes here for a visit, I have to call conservation officers, they may as well live here. It is part of rural life the good come with the bad. It is our responsibility to look after our animals. He knew that there was a cougar around. Why did the owner not put the horses inside the barn overnight?

Too many Grinches Dear editor,
I have worked retail most of my life, and at this time of year people are generally in a better space. That being said, this year seems different. Having worked the past five years at my current job, I have noticed that this year is really bad for a lot of people. With the economy the way that it is right now, so many people have lost their jobs or are locked out like Extra Foods staff. But I visited the staff at Extra Foods recently and for the most part they still remain positive, so these are not the people in which this letter is for. This is for you… you… Grinches out there who wake up and feel like you have to be like Scrooge because you have to wait in a lineup for two minutes longer than you might have had to a month ago. Just remember that the clerks are doing the best they can, they have certain rules they must follow in order to serve you. But also, they are there to work and to get paid. I also have had bad service when I have gone to a store, and that is why I do my best to help each customer to the best of my abilities, so do my co-workers. But we (as in anyone who deals with the public) do not deserve to be yelled at, cursed at, or have things thrown at us for any reason – at all. So please remember to be kind to that person behind the counter, desk, or even on the phone next time. We are all just doing a job that is harder than most of the world realizes, harder when dealing with the public on a day-today basis.

Writers undertake challenge Novelists took part in National Novel Writing Month, with some meeting weekly at the Maple Ridge Library. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Many have dreamed of publishing a novel, seeing their name in print and reading the hopefully rave reviews about their work. Writing a novel is no small feat, but how about writing one in only 30 days? That was the challenge faced by writers around the world as they took part in November’s National Novel Writing Month. About a dozen people from Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and Mission took part in ‘NaNoWriMo’ and some met each Monday afternoon for ‘write-ins’ at the Maple Ridge library. It gives the writers a chance to encourage and help each other with their monumental task. This is the world’s largest writing challenge and non-profit literary crusade and each writer was asked to contribute 50,000 words each. Carol Garvin, one of two people who organizes the local meet-ups at the library, and who was a participant, said the event attracted the kind of people who think they may have a novel in them. “It’s an event for people who produce a lot of verbal garbage to people wanting to get their first draft down on paper,” said Garvin. This was her fourth year taking part and although she is already a published writer, Garvin said this

Racer aims for senior nationals
Local speedskater Michelle MacKay will be heading to Montreal in January and March 2011 to attend the national team trials. by Amy Judd

Maple Ridge speedskater Michelle MacKay did not have much time to get ready for Christmas this year. She spent two weeks of December in Quebec at the national qualifiers. Then she had to come back and write three exams for her kinesiology degree at the University College of the Fraser Valley. “Luckily we were able to get the tree up before we left,” said
Trish MacKay, Michelle’s mother and former president of the Ridge Meadows Racers. Michelle will also be attending the Canada Winter Games in February in Halifax and is the only member of the Ridge Meadows Racers going to the senior national team trials in Montreal next month, although others may be joining her in March. “She did very well,” said Trish MacKay. “She narrowly missed making the junior world team, but she still has one more year of juniors,” she said. Michelle said she was really happy with her result in Quebec as it was such a different outcome from last year. “I wasn’t even close to making it last year,” she said. Michelle has worked hard since then and felt that made a big difference.
“I trained really hard in the summer,” she said, “I did lots of weights and I’ve been working on my speed for the last month.” That really helped in her 500m race, an event in which she won a bronze medal at the Canadian Junior short track championships in Quebec the first weekend she was there. She then came fifth in the 500m senior competition and 11th overall. Michelle said she likes the 500m event even though the starts can be a bit intense and it is easy to get nervous.

Thomas McLennan skated his first ever national level junior competition and obtained a personal best in his 500m, then skated to two seconds and a third in his qualifying races. He finished 27th overall and Trish MacKay said he did very well at the competition. McLennan will also be joining his brother William at the Canada Winter Games in February after he was able to grab the last spot on the B.C. squad. Michelle and the McLennan brothers will guarantee that the Ridge Meadows Racers will have a strong presence at the games in Halifax.

GAUTHIER, Frank
October 28, 1937 - December 17, 2010
Passed away after a short battle with lung cancer in Maple Ridge Hospital. Frank was born in Hamilton, Ontario and began a career in the military. He was a Captain in the Army and served in Vietnam. Following his career with the armed services he worked as a high school teacher in Ontario before moving to Vancouver in the early 1990s. There he worked as a graphic artist in the advertising department of The Vancouver Sun and The Province newspapers until his retirement in 2002. Frank remained a very active member in his community and served three terms as president of the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans Association Unit 379 in Maple Ridge. Frank will be sadly missed by his wife Kathie and all his friends and comrades. There will be a celebration of Frank’s life on January 2nd, 2011 at 2 pm at the Army, Navy & Air Force Veteran’s Association Unit 379, 22326 North Avenue, Maple Ridge, BC.
