Realtor mourns a Georgian mansion

Aspiring local real estate agent Mitch Cal has always had a penchant for wealthy homes and architecture, and his passion recently led him on a trip of a lifetime. by Amy Judd

ajudd@mrtimes.com

He wants to start selling real estate in the Lower Mainland as soon as he gets his licence, but Mitch Cal eventually has his sights set on the holy grail of selling homes – the luxury mansion market. The Pitt Meadows resident has had one particular favourite for the past seven years, Dean Gardens in Atlanta, Ga., that was famous for not only being on the market since 1993, but also for its eccentric design. Dean Gardens was bought late last year by entertainer Tyler Perry, but Cal was horrified when he heard it was going to

be torn down. He knew he had to try to see it before it was gone. “I emailed the owner of the house, not expecting anything,” said Cal, a 21-yearold Pitt Meadows man. “I told him how obsessed I was and he invited me down for a tour,” Cal recounted. He was on a plane, with his mom, within days. “I’d never seen anything like it before,” he told The TIMES, noting he was able to see the house still fully furnished. The house is now mostly empty after an auction, and will be levelled soon. Cal said many people thought he was “crazy” when he told them about his impromptu trip, but he didn’t care, wealthy real estate is his passion and nothing was going to stop him from seeing Dean Gardens. Cal has since made friends with Larry Dean’s (the former owner and builder) son Christopher, who was the interior designer for the house whenhe was Cal’s

The Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association is hoping the local board of education will help wrestle back control of part of the contract negotiations, which will take place this spring. Katzie to keep services at Grant Narrows

A contract is in the works with the local First Nation people to manage the park site. by Maria Rantanen

The Katzie First Nation hope as they take over the former Grant Narrows Regional Park, that services will continue uninterrupted under their leadership. A maintenance contract with the province should be in place early this year, and later a longer term lease to allow for the same services to be in place that were provided before by Metro Vancouver. The canoe and food concession contracts that ended at the park last summer will be replaced, according to the Katzie. Two years ago, the Katzie suggested that the

Serra will be at the board of education meeting on Wednesday evening with a goal of getting trustees to take back some control and bargain locally. Currently the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association negotiates with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation on a contract for all teachers in the province. “The local board has to get the momentum and confidence to tell BCPSEA this is the path we want to go down,” Serra said. Serra said the current negotiation system isn’t working, and the last round resulted in a two-week teachers’ strike. Of the last three contracts, two were legislated, and the last one was a result of bringing in a provincial mediator, Serra pointed out.

Transit cops nab escapee An inmate will spend an extra 30 days in jail after escaping. He was caught last week, while the hunt continues for two others.

Thanks to transit police, one escapee from a Maple Ridge prison is back in jail. But two others are still on the lamb. David Traill, 48, was an inmate at Fraser Regional Correctional Centre when he escaped during a work detail in Allco Park on Dec. 30. He was apprehended at Edmonds SkyTrain station around noon on Thursday, Jan. 6, after he failed to pay his fare. Traill was detained by transit officers when he failed to show proof of fare payment. According to RCMP, he tried to jump off the SkyTrain platform after lying to the officers about his identity and then struggled with police before being arrested. Transit police are recommending charges of assaulting a police officer, obstructing a peace officer

in the lawful execution of duties, and resisting arrest. He appeared in court the next day, pleading guilty to the single charge of escaping lawful custody. Traill was sentenced to a further 30 days behind bars. In the meantime, Ridge Meadows RCMP are still looking for Douglas Erickson, 42, and Ryan Plotnikoff, 30. Erickson, has brown eyes and short brown hair. He weighs 84 kg (185 pounds) and is about 173 cm (5ft 8 in) tall. He has two tattoos on his right shoulder (a dragon and a Tazmanian devil). Plotnikoff, has blue eyes and short brown hair. He

weighs 95 kg (209 pounds) and is approximately 193 cm (6 ft 4 in) tall. He has a Tazmanian devil tattoo on a finger on his right hand, and a Maple Leaf on a finger on his left hand. Police say the escapees will not likely be violent. However, anyone seeing these men should not approach, but rather call police immediately. Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251, or the local police in the region. To remain anonymous, people can call CrimeStoppers, 1-800-2228477, or message at www. bccrimestoppers.com.

Family still setting his place

Public Notice of Open House Highway 7 Median Design

Five years after Grant De Patie’s death, his family is still supporting late-night retail provisions aimed at protecting workers.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure invites the public to attend a public information session to preview the design for placement of a median barrier on Highway 7 - Lougheed Highway between 105th Avenue and 240th Street in Maple Ridge. This proposed safety improvement will affect access to properties located on the Lougheed Highway between 105th Avenue and 240th Street. The open house is scheduled for the following date and time:

by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Grant De Patie’s parents wish their son’s killer received a longer sentence. “More justice for Grant,” said his father Doug. In October, De Patie’s killer Darnell Pratt was sent back to prison after he broke curfew in Kamloops. “It was a trial effort,” said Doug. “Darnell is his own worst enemy.” But Grant’s father said he doesn’t just want Pratt locked up for the rest of his life. “We want to rehabilitate them and bring them into our community,” he said. “But, it appears his rehabilitation was a farce.” Pratt was just 16 years old, when he struck 24year-old Grant during a gas-and-dash where Grant tried to stop Pratt from driving away and was caught in the undercarriage of the car and dragged to his death. Grant’s death led to the introduction of “Grant’s Law,” which required all urban gas stations in B.C. to have a mandatory prepay system all the time.

Corinne and Doug De Patie want more safety measures to protect late-night workers, after their son Grant’s death. “It has been 100 per cent successful in preventing gas and dashes,” said Doug. Since Grant’s Law was introduced, other late-night retail provisions have also been explored – but not without issue. One rule on the table will require all retailers – between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. – to have two employees working or one worker that is physically separated from the public by a locked door or barrier. Enforcement is set to start July 31. On Dec. 8, WorkSafeBC announced implementation of the new rule was causing challenges to businesses and that a consultation process will be set up. “It’s become apparent to us that some employers find it really difficult to comply to those changes,” explained WorksSafeBC spokesman Scott Mc Cloy. “But priority continues to be protecting late-night retail workers,” he added. “It’s a battle that’s

always going to be waged between employers, workers and WorkSafe,” Doug interceded. McCloy noted nothing is carved in stone at this point and that is what the consultation period is about. “We are not in any way minimizing the protection of late-night workers. But there’s not much point in creating a law no one can comply with,” he said. In the meantime, Pratt is set for release in November, but that is little consolation for Grant’s family, who recently celebrated another Christmas without their son. “It’s a life sentence without Grant,” Doug said. The family still set a place for Grant at the Christmas table, and his father said the first thing he would say to his son now – if he had the chance – would be “I love you of course.” “Life plods on I’m afraid,” Doug added. “Without Grant.”

Canine volunteers

Dogs spreading cheer

Ridge Meadows Hospital is looking for people to volunteer some time with their canines to spread joy to the sick. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Studies have shown that petting a dog or a cat can lift a person’s mood, and staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital know that a visit from an animal can help someone sick feel better. The Code K9 dog volunteer visitors program gives people in the community the chance to help those in the hospital, and the hospital’s volunteer resources department is currently looking for people to bring in their canine friend for a couple of hours a week. “Dogs provide that unconditional support and companionship,” said Rhonda O’Grady, the coordinator for Volunteer Resources at the Ridge Meadows Hospital and Health Care Centre. “Because they are nonjudgemental, people feel comfortable with them,” she added. The dogs and their owners go around to most

Volunteers Bev Brown (left) and Jennifer Peskett posed with Bev’s dogs Molly and Amy and a member of the adult day program at Ridge Meadows Hospital. parts of the hospital, aiming to lend a little extra support and ease anxiety, said O’Grady. Anyone who owns a dog can apply to volunteer. But all dogs must be evaluated before entering the program, and be able to remain calm and stay under the owner’s control. “They must be at least a couple of years old,” added O’Grady, noting no puppies allowed at this time. “They should like people, be the right personality, be able to ride in elevators, and get used to loud noises,” said Bev Brown, the volunteer Code K9 team

leader and a long-time volunteer with her two dogs. “We [also] have two resident cats on the third floor of Baillie [House],” said Brown. “So they have to be able to walk past cats.” Volunteers also need to produce liability insurance, and Brown said most people have a home owner’s policy that covers their dog. “Once the dog is evaluated, the person has to become a hospital volunteer,” she added. Brown has been volunteering for so long because she sees the difference even a short visit with an animal can make to some patients, especially those who had to leave their own pets behind when they moved to the hospital for full-time care. “Even for a moment, it helps [the patients and staff] to relax and focus,” said O’Grady. Owners of all breeds are welcome to apply and the Ridge Meadows Hospital will be holding an information session on Saturday, Jan. 15, 1-2:30 p.m. in the main floor conference room of the hospital (just for owners, no dogs). To register, or find out more, contact Volunteer Resources at 604-466-7911.

Chippers open for business

The local search team kicked off its annual Christmas tree chip-up this weekend near Planet Ice. by Teija Beck

editorial@mrtimes.com

Business was booming at the annual Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue team tree chip-up on Saturday, with 80 to 100 trees chipped by noon. The pace this year was similar to previous years, noting that the first day is usually the busiest, said rescue team member Brian Moffat.

Jan. 2 was the busiest day for pickups, which are conducted by the First Haney Rovers Scout troop – by appointment, Moffat explained. Despite the chilly weather Saturday, the five team members running the morning shift said they enjoyed the experience. “Everyone chips in,” quipped Warren Cupples, a search member who helps out with the tree chipping event each year. All money raised goes to support the search and rescue team. Trees can be dropped off this weekend as well, outside the search and rescue building near Planet Ice, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 15 and 16, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Filming is a big business in British Columbia, and Maple Ridge has established itself as a desirable location to shoot. Forty productions were filmed in Maple Ridge in the past year, with 191 “shoot days.” This puts 2010 on par with 2009, which had 39 productions filmed locally over 236 “shoot days.” “The logistics of hosting the most successful Olympics ever were not conducive to filming activity, and the industry pretty much ground to a halt in the first quarter of 2010,” said Marg Johnson, film production liaison with the District of Maple Ridge. Filming picked up after the Olympics, and Maple Ridge hosted film crews working on movies of the week and feature films, including Donovan’s Echo, starring Danny Glover, as well as The Big Year, with Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson. December in particular has been a busy month for filming, she said. “We have the feature film Dungeon Siege, starring Dolph Lundgren, [which just finished] filming up in Golden Ears Park, as well as the TV series The Haunted, which just wrapped their filming at the Albion fairgrounds,” Johnson said. “Three other movies of the week complete[d] their filming [last] week, so [December’s] been a very busy month.” The film industry provides a big boost to Maple Ridge’s economy. Age doesn’t deter aspiring teen

Alexandria Maillot, 18, played a supporting role in the locally filmed movie Red Riding Hood.

Alexandria Maillot is not your average teenager. She has travelled to Bucharest, Romania and Cairo, Egypt to participate in children’s music festivals. She also plays five musical instruments and has just acted in a supporting role in a Hollywood movie alongside Amanda Seyfried. Opening March 11, Red Riding Hood is Maillot’s first feature film. She plays the role of Lucie, the lead character’s older sister in this dramatic thriller. Maillot moved to Maple Ridge – shortly after graduating from Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School in Courtenay – with the hope of pursuing her dreams of songwriting and acting. “It was actually perfect timing, because I’d auditioned for the movie around that time, and with my musical stuff to do I always end up coming to Vancouver,” Maillot said. Our View

Let’s all stand up to bullies The 16-year-old girl who was raped during a rave in Pitt Meadows last year showed remarkable strength this week. As two more suspects were arrested – one each from Langley and Maple Ridge – she released a statement to the public. “Thank you to everyone who has been there to help me through this terrible ordeal,” she wrote. “But to the people who did not support me, who called me names, who spread lies about me: Thank you, because you made me much stronger than I’ve ever been before.” What this girl has endured is appalling. She was the victim of the revolting crime of rape. That was compounded as pictures of the attack spread through Facebook. Finally, she had the indignity of hearing classmates question whether she was really a victim at all. Why do so many people still blame the victims of rape? Some people seem to love attacking the victim, with slurs like these: It must have been her fault. She shouldn’t have been dressed like that. She should have known better than to go there. She was asking for it. She probably enjoyed it. It’s hard to think of a more hateful series of lies, but apparently they are still common currency, among both adults and teenagers living in our communities. Some people cannot understand simple concepts, like rape, consent, or the word “no.” Rapists are cowardly scum who invariably prey on people who are weaker than they are. Their victims are not simply weak physically, because they are smaller or younger than their attackers (though they often are). They are weak because centuries of sexism and misogyny have made them less likely to be believed or taken seriously. We can only estimate the number of rapes never reported to police. We will never know how many are concealed due to shame – or how many victims choose to avoid being slandered, bullied, and ignored. The victim in this case has shouldered more than the usual share of garbage and pain. We hope some of it rebounds on those who really deserve it: the attackers, and the people who would excuse them of a heinous crime. - M.C.

Development

Give up big box paranoia B.C. shouldn’t have to Dear editor,

My New Year’s resolution is to celebrate Maple Ridge’s past achievements and future possibilities as we embrace the challenges of 2011. Instead of complaining, I will determine to believe that our cup is half full not half empty. There is definitely a noticeable change in the appearance of the downtown core. Fuller Watson, Haney Builders, and others have made upgrades to their store fronts. Congratulations to them and a challenge to other businesses to do the same. I understand Graham Mowatt’s concern with the mill rate and increases in our property taxes, [Budget not ‘conservative’, Dec. 31 Letter, The TIMES] but I’m not sure that he provides us with a workable solution. He states that Maple Ridge spends more for basic services than it collects from taxation. The tax assessment is determined by the amount needed to provide basic services to the community garnered from commercial and residential tax revenues with variations based on property values. If 26 per cent of our tax income is generated by the eight per cent, which is our commercial tax base, it stands to reason that to address this imbalance and promote more commercial development would in turn ease the pressure away from us residential taxpayers and provide available funds necessary to

maintain roads and facilitate needed capital projects and infrastructure improvements. A prime example of this imbalance is east Maple Ridge and the Albion area. Drive down 240th Street and what do you see but residential, what I would call ‘inter urban’ sprawl. There is a lack of mixed development, no thought given to commercial zoning except for 102nd Avenue, with a pizzeria and coffee shop and the new liquor store on 240th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road. To create vibrant communities, we need to develop these types of satellite cores with a connective network of trails, bike paths, as well as community gardens similar to many European communities, which don’t plan urban designs around automotive modes of transportation. The exodus of vehicular driven traffic and the resulting carbon emissions and congestion is a direct result of a lack of planning and vision that is required to produce truly livable communities. Finally look at the opportunity that the Albion Flats could provide in terms of commercial development, retail opportunities, jobs, tax income, strata type development etc. and get over the paranoia about so called ‘big box’ stores of which some are essential to create the synergy necessary for smaller retail shops and/or restaurants to thrive.

import its electricity

Dear editor,

‘Tis the season for year end, top ten, best-of-worst-of lists. But there’s only one item on my Hall of Shame list for 2010, and that’s B.C.’s growing dependence on imported electricity. It’s mindboggling that we’re actually having to import electricity in a province as rich in untapped renewable energy resources as B.C. is. Talk about taking coal to Newcastle. And I mean that literally, because much of the electricity we’re importing comes from coal. If people in this province can make one collective New Year’s resolution, I hope it will be for B.C. to become electricity self-sufficient in 2011 and an exporter of electricity rather than an importer.

Sandra Robinson, Maple Ridge

Municipal politics

Council needs to pray Dear editor,

Amen or Amen-ded. It seems to me that some of the councillors are a little out of touch with their job and responsibilities. Maple Ridge is now the meth capital of B.C., and we have an increase in growops and drug-related problems. We are known for heinous crimes such as the Grant DePatie and Colleen Findlay cases, and the posting on YouTube of an [alleged] rape at a party. I think that the majority of

Maple Ridge residents and business owners are more concerned about the safety and well-being of our community, than council spending so much time, energy, and cost on whether or not to have a prayer at the beginning of the meetings. I am not a religious man, but don’t you think that instead of getting rid of prayer, you should maybe extend it, looking for guidance and wisdom beyond ourselves. What have we got to lose?

Jeff Zacharias, Maple Ridge

Provincial politics

Open expense records Dear editor,

So now the Liberals in British Columbia do not want to let the people of British Columbia know what they are spending on our behalf. The Liberals run this province as a corporation – any corporation would demand accountability for expenses. Do we, the people of British Columbia, deserve less? As the public servants they claim to be, their expenses on our behalf should be open for all to see. I seem to remember a certain Gordon Campbell saying his government would be the most transparent ever. Oops, I guess that was another falsehood, but then we are used to them, aren’t we?

Teenage curlers take the ice More than 50 secondary students spent an afternoon curling at the Golden Ears Winter Club last Friday. by Amy Judd

With a level of enthusiasm that is usually reserved for news that school is cancelled due to a snow day, Grade 11 and 12 students from Samuel Robertson Technical and Westview

Secondary Schools took part on Friday, “They’re all over it,” said SRT physJan. 7 in what is hoped will become ical education teacher Jason Hampton, an annual high school “they’re fired up.” The bonspiel was mini bonspiel. “They’re all over it part of the students’ “We definitely want (the first bonspiel) to make this the first P.E. curriculum, annual,” said Lynne but Hampton and ...they’re fired up.” Jambor, general manWestview P.E. teacher Jason Hampton ager of the Golden Ears Craig Draper wanted to Winter Club. make the bonspiel an inter-school event, something that does The students eagerly took to the ice not happen in the district. to show their skills, with their team “This is our first one so we’re going names picked out, and some even to work out the knots,” laughed wearing team uniforms.

Most of the participants were boys, but a few girls took part and Taylor Carrier from SRT said she doesn’t mind curling with so many boys. “This is something different,” she said of the bonspiel. “I’ve never curled, even though I’ve played hockey for about 13 years, so it’s fun.”

Softball

Switch-hitter gets SFU’s attention Speed and versatility helped Iris Chow land a softball scholarship for next fall. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

Iris Chow needed to switch things up in order to extricate herself from a batting slump this spring. And she did just that — quite literally. The centre-fielder with the Surrey Storm midget A girls softball team had been struggling from the right side of the plate.

So, on advice from her coach, the Maple Ridge teen decided to try batting left-handed for the final three months of the season. Her switch-hitting strategy worked. Chow started out strictly bunting from the left side, then started slapping the ball and using her blazing speed to get on base. Next up, Chow plans to take it up a notch by adding power. “You can only place the ball in certain areas if you want to be a left-handed slapper,” Chow said. “You can only hit it to the left side of the field, so it’s a lot of work.”

Chow, who writes with her left hand and throws with her right, said hours of left-handed batting practice paid dividends. Chow’s versatility and efficiency at the plate helped her Storm team capture silver at the provincial championships July 17 to 19 in Richmond. She elevated her game to a new level at the Canadian Midget Girls Fastpitch Championships in Saint John, N.B. In helping the Storm place third in Canada, Chow was named top batter at the tournament with a .576 batting average.

“I learned [how to hit] lefthanded three months before nationals, and ended up just switch hitting,” Chow recalled. “I only hit left at nationals.” Chow’s recent success caught the attention of Simon Fraser University’s women’s softball coach Mike Renney. The reigning NAIA national champion Clan signed Chow along with her Surrey Storm teammates Danielle Raison and Kaitlyn Cameron for the fall of 2011. Raison and Cameron both call Langley home.

Pitt boys fight for victory READERS’ CHOICE Pitt Meadows’ senior boys team battled hard for two wins and a loss at the Abby Snowball Tournament.

by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

The Pitt Meadows Marauders took part in the Abby Snowball Tournament late last week, and coach Rich Goulet said the boys “saw it all” in their games against Mennonite Educational Institute from Abbotsford, South Kamloops and Fairfax High School from California. In their first game against MEI, the Marauders had to claw their way back from behind, and even with a lead of

59-40 in the third quarter, MEI used their speed and skill to narrow the gap to only six points. Malcolm Williams with 26 and Trevor Severinski with 25 settled the off-kilter Marauders for the win. Mitsu Iwai added 12 points and Matt Blackaby contributed 11 points. In their second game against South Kamloops, the Marauders had a good steady game and were able to clinch their second win with a final of 74-53. They could not keep up the momentum for their last game against Fairfax High School, who came back from defeat in the second half to win 76-54.

Iris Chow is quick, coach says ...continued from page A16

“Iris is one of the quickest athletes I have seen in years, and as a left-handed slapper will give opposing infields all they can handle with her short game, while her speed also provides great range in the outfield,” Renney said in a story published on the SFU Athletics website. Chow, who also plays competitive soccer, was immediately drawn to softball. “I knew my competitive level for softball was a lot stronger, and that’s why I ended up having to leave [Maple] Ridge for Surrey because the atmosphere was different,” Chow said. Chow said her passion for softball took off once she started playing for the Storm and can’t wait for the 2011 season to start. “The girls and my coaches, everyone

who helped out, and all the parents… we’re all just a big family,” she said. “I’m so proud of how we did and how we are going to be able to do this year as a second-year team.” “We were playing against girls two years older this year and we still came third [in Canada]. Being the youngest team to place in nationals and provincials, I’m really proud of that,” said Chow. Chow will focus on balancing university life with varsity softball in the fall. An honour student at Thomas Haney Secondary, she has the ultimate goal of earning a degree in dentistry. “I’m ready for the challenge and I think it’s such an honour to get an education and also be doing something I love,” Chow said.

TRUTH IN ''EMPLOYMENT'' ADVERTISING Postmedia Community Publishing makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711, Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
