Man run down on Dewdney

Anxious to move into the new cat condo
Volunteers and animals alike at the Maple Ridge SPCA are anxiously awaiting the completion of a new shelter under construction on the existing Albion site. All the occupants hope to make the move into the new digs within the month. In the meantime, volunteer Maggie Meyers spent some time Saturday visiting with the 11 cats still being housed in the dilapidated, old shelter. The 12-year-old has been a volunteer since October 2009. “I wanted something to do. Mostly I love the cats and doggies and rabbits,” she told the TIMES.
Ridge Meadows RCMP are still trying to determine if a 63-year-old man, who was killed this weekend, was in the crosswalk of Dewdney Trunk Road and 222 Street when he was struck. Police were called out at about 10:10 a.m. on Saturday morning, along with the Maple Ridge fire department and B.C. Ambulance Services. The older man was immediately transported to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries, said Supt. Dave Walsh. As of press deadline, police were not releasing his name or details of his death. The pickup truck that struck the man was driven by a 59-year-old Maple Ridge woman, who was turning left off 222nd Street, and proceeding west on Dewdney. No charges have been filed against the woman at this time. While hunting for the cause of the accident, police are saying weather is not believed to be a factor. The investigation is still in the beginning phase. Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251.

Douglas College revisits Ridge expansion
Maple Ridge’s economic strategy includes increasing post-secondary educational options locally. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Douglas College is exploring the viability of once again offering post-secondary education in Maple Ridge. The president of Douglas College will be at tonight’s Maple Ridge council meeting seeking input into what post-secondary needs exist in the community. While the current plan is not for a “bricks and mortar” campus, Scott McAlpine, who’s been president of the
college for 15 months, would like to consult with the District of Maple Ridge on what programs might be in demand locally, and what would be viable for the long-term in the community. “The question for us, is there a viable program or set of programs for Maple Ridge?” McAlpine said. Douglas College is a community-based college with a strong academic focus, and currently 50 per cent of their courses are university transfer courses. There are currently 8,000 students attending Douglas College, and between 500 and 800 are from Maple Ridge. The college staff want to see how they can better serve the community. “When people have to leave (their) community... they’re much less likely to
attend post-secondary,” McAlpine said. Douglas College has just completed a strategic plan based on recent consultation meetings. The college is on a “growth trajectory,” McAlpine said, and the plan is to increase its enrolment to 9,000 from its current enrolment of 8,000 over the next three years. The college would consider different models of teaching for Maple Ridge and that might be a combination of direct, face-to-face instruction, video conferencing, and online learning. Because post-secondary education is “very, very broad,” the college wouldn’t want to compete with its own campuses. “We need to look at clearly articulated demand,” McAlpine said. As a community college, “Douglas
College is here to serve the communities that are within our region.” However, it has to be economically viable, he said. Douglas College offered courses at Thomas Haney Secondary from 1992 to 2003, but the college had to pull out, which McAlpine said is not good for the college’s reputation or the community. “We have to be very prudent about what we offer in Maple Ridge,” he said. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said he met with the president of Douglas College to discuss opportunties for postsecondary education in Maple Ridge. While he’s not expecting a campus to be built locally, Daykin said that education is one of the focus areas of the District’s economic strategy along with high-tech and tourism.

Cameras and film owned by a prominent local man is being sorted by staff at the Maple Ridge Museum. by Troy Landreville tlandreville@mrtimes.com
Bill Saunders’ extensive assortment of film and video equipment, film, and images is in good hands. The long-time Maple Ridge resident, who died a few years back at the age of 94, used his camera collection to take still and moving picture records of local life, as well as his travels across Canada and in England over the years. Some of his images date back several decades. Bill was a camera aficionado who was also a bit of a techno enthusiast with a particular keenness for filming videos. After his last remaining sibling, Margery, died on Nov. 26 at the age of 97, Bill’s camera collection was donated to the Maple Ridge Museum. The house Bill and his siblings had lived in for 76 years was “like a record of three lives,” according to museum director Val Patenaude. “There was Marge, Kathleen, and Bill,” Patenaude said. “None of them married, and they all lived to a very old age. And as each of the siblings died, the remaining ones simply stopped going in their room, and so this [Bill’s] room was like a set. Nobody had been in there so all of his cameras were still in there.” Margery is an interesting story in her own right. She competed in archery at the 1972 Olympic Games for Canada at the age of 59, and also coached the sport and was one of the founding members of the Maple

It was Margery’s wish that most of her brother’s camera gear be donated to the museum. Bill’s cameras, both film and video, reels of film, lenses, and photos were sorted through by museum staff recently. Bill was a medical officer during the Second World War who returned to work at Alco Infirmary and Riverview psychiatric hospital following the war. In the community, Bill was part of the group that helped open Golden Ears Park. Despite having been established in 1927,

School unlikely on 112th Avenue Board chair said school site acquisition is out of the school board’s hands. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
A school in the 24100 block of 112th Avenue in Albion is looking unlikely although a site was designated for one in the District of Maple Ridge’s plans. It has been more than five years since the land was designated in the Official Community Plan as a school site, but there has been no movement on buying the property. School sites are bought by the Ministry of Education, and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board chair said they have no authority or funds to buy property for future schools. “It’s totally out of the school board’s hands,” Clarkson said. He added if local boards were given
more authority, they could better plan for future schools. The courts have ruled that properties can’t be designated for special purposes like schools for long periods of time, said Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin. “We don’t have the ability to hang on to it forever,” Daykin said. In order to better plan for the future, Daykin said he’s requested a meeting with the Ministry of Education to look at areas like Albion and Silver Valley. He said there’s a need to come to an understanding with the ministry about what will be funded in the future. A meeting planned in June with the Ministry of Education didn’t materialize, Clarkson said, as he was informed it wouldn’t help in the planning process. “The message we got back was it wouldn’t serve any purpose,” he said. A site on 104th Avenue in Albion has been purchased for a future school.

Cat thought to kill horse East Maple Ridge residents are being warned of possible cougar attacks. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The latest attack by what police believe to be a cougar, occurred Sunday morning at a farm in the 25700 block of 128 Avenue, and left one horse dead. In the past 10 days, seven farm animals are dead due to cougar attacks and the B.C. Conservation Officer Service and the Ridge Meadows RCMP are currently looking for the animal. On Jan. 13, police were advised of a cougar in this area of east Maple Ridge, but patrols failed to locate it.
“We will assist B.C. Conservation on this problem in any way we can,” said RCMP Insp. Derren Lench. “In the meantime, we want to make our citizens aware of this.” Lench said that although there have been no reports of a cougar attacking humans, this type of animal can be “very unpredictable,” and is a genuine cause for concern. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service are continuing their efforts to trap the cougar, but they, along with Ridge Meadows RCMP, want to alert all citizens to these attacks. Anyone who sights the cougar is asked to contact the B.C. Conservation line at 1-877-952-7277, or Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251.

Citizen stops purse thieves A Good Samaritan is credited with preventing a woman’s purse from being stolen last Thursday. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
A 29-year-old man was entering the Tim Hortons at Lougheed Highway at 224nd Street in downtown Maple Ridge at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, when he noticed a purse lying unattended – seemingly forgotten – on a nearby table. He saw two men go over to the table,
with one of the men picking up the purse and concealing it inside his jacket. As the suspects tried to leave the restaurant, however, the witness approached them. He demanded they return the purse. They did and then ran away, while the local resident retrieved the purse. The suspect who tried to steal the purse is described as a Caucasian man in his 40s, 6 ft tall, with a slim build, and red hair. His accomplice is also Caucasian, 6 ft tall, with a heavy build. With the help of the restaurant’s manager, the owner of the purse was contacted, and the purse was returned.

are concerned about FSA EXAMS
10. They are inaccurate. Students know that the scores do not “count” for the report card, so some do not do their best work. 9. They are impractical. Reading and Math in real life are not a series of multiple choice questions! 8. The marks are invalid. Ministry of Education markers are given 10 minutes to mark each FSA booklet. They may not even have time to read the students’ completed work! 7. The costs are downloaded. The Ministry of Education only funds part of the FSA costs. Our School Board is forced to make up the shortfall out of children’s programs. 6. They are unhelpful. Student answer sheets do not reveal areas that need more teaching. 5. They reduce learning and instruction time. Practicing for and writing the FSA steals valuable learning time from students and instruction time from teachers. 4. They are incomplete. FSA results are based on raw scores on just one test of reading, writing, and numeracy. The results are not reliable, valid or fair. 3. They are unnecessary. Report cards are a more reliable measure of a student’s overall progress with evidence from diverse assessments over the term. 2. They are unsupported by any funding. Test results bring no additional funding or support to students or schools, even if needs are identified. 1. They invite misuse. Test results are often misused by third parties to create unauthorized school “rankings.” This is like comparing all NHL teams based on one game in February! Pitt Meadows Meats investigated Company claimed employee didn’t take sample properly. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
Pitt Meadows Meats admitted they didn’t inform the Canadian Food Inspection Agency of a positive E. coli test last fall and a thorough and comprehensive investigation is being launched by the agency. The company apologized and said it takes “responsibility for this lapse in judgement.” CFIA spokesperson Alice d’Anjou said the agency takes such cases seriously and its enforcement and investigative group has launched an investigation into Pitt Meadows Meats. The plant’s operations were suspended on Nov. 5 and it reopened on Dec. 6. The food inspection agency required the company to comply with the E. coli con-
trol program as a condition of reopening, said Joseph Beres, CFIA inspection manager for the Greater Vancouver area. In a written statement, the business manager and plant manager said that the employee who took the sample which tested positive for E. coli couldn’t assure the plant he had taken the sample properly. He was asked to redo the test, and it came back negative. The company stated that they would have submitted it to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency “under normal circumstances,” but instead redid the test “due to the suspect sample handling.” The company voluntarily recalled its meat products and had 900 samples tested by the CFIA, all of which were negative, said Pitt Meadows Meats business manager Brian Bilkes. E. coli can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and mild fever. In very serious cases, it can be fatal.

Trail not affecting drainage A report will be presented to council on Tuesday about the impact of Wildwood Trail work on area homes. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Thurber Engineering Ltd. found that the construction of the Wildwood Trail, between Hammond Road and Airport Way, was “highly unlikely” to cause drainage problems in the area. Some residents in the 19800 block of Wildwood Crescent expressed concern when the trail was first constructed, claiming it caused drainage problems in their yards. Resident Leslie Colquhoun told Thurber that since the trail was built, the lower rear portion of her yard is wet and unusable.
Kim Grout, director of operations and development services, said council will receive the report on Tuesday, at council in committee, and advise staff if there is any further direction. She noted the City already spent $10,000 on the investigation. “It’s the floodplain area, and we have got a new drainage utility program in place,” Grout said. The Wildwood Trail was built west of the Katzie Slough, but the south part of the slough is part of the 2011 capital works program, and the City is going to look at whether they can improve drainage in that area as well, Grout said. Thurber Engineering was not asked to comment on surface drainage, but they have concluded that it is unlikely construction of the trail caused alteration of sub-surface drainage that could have increased pooling in the rear of any residences along Wildwood Crescent.

Our View
Promise about holding power As part of his bid for re-election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has vowed to dismantle what may be the most progressive, democratic campaign finance laws in the world. Harper has pledged he would make the elimination of taxpayer subsidies to federal political parties a priority. On its surface, it doesn’t sound like a bad plan. Who wants their tax dollars to help politicians advertise? In reality, it’s a terrible idea. Canada’s election finance rules exist to protect Canadians. Candidates and parties have strict limits on how much they can spend; individuals have low caps on what they can give (slightly more than $1,000) and unions and corporations can’t donate at all. The largest single source of funding for candidates is the subsidy, defined as $1.75 (or thereabouts) per year for each vote their party won in the previous election. The effect is that candidates are served better by pleasing voters than by pleasing private interests. Taking $1.75 out of each voter’s tax bill to ensure the balance is spent for our benefit is, on the whole, a pretty good deal. Harper wants to undo this, and it’s obvious why. Reverting to a reliance on private donors is clearly most helpful to parties that serve the interests of wealthy individuals and organizations. Harper’s plan has nothing to do with fairness to taxpayers and everything to do with giving his party an edge. It should be rejected.
Drugs need watching
MPs Terence Young, Ujjal Dosanjh and Jean Crowder say they want core funding preserved for the Therapeutics Initiative, an internationally acclaimed drug watchdog based at UBC. The politicians from three federal political parties were able to agree because their cause is so obviously just. The provincial government’s response to recommendations by an industry-dominated Pharmaceutical Task Force by giving TI contracts worth $150,000 to conduct clinical evidence reviews. At the same time, the MPs noted, it also slashed TI’s budget by $450,000. The MPs argue that TI’s independent drug assessment is necessary to ensure the safety of new drugs before they reach the market. The budget cuts could cost lives.

Professionalism questioned Dear editor,
Remember the days when trucks kept to the right, and had speed limits slower than cars, and actually drove and acted like professional truck drivers? My father drove trailer trucks more than a million miles without an accident. The other day, I drove from Maple Ridge to North Delta, and once again was reminded how much things have changed for the so-called professional driver. Some of the trucks I observed looked literally like accidents looking for a place to happen. There was a little snow on the road and it was slippery as a result. In spite of these hazardous conditions, I was passed by at least five semi-trailer trucks – at one point I had a trailer to my left and another semi passed me on the right-hand side doing at
least 30 kilometres over the speed limit. I was literally blinded by the spray and had to back off so as to be able to see. I got home only to read about a dump truck with a trailer passing two cars and killing a bus driver. It became very clear to me that something has to be done about the dangerous situation that has developed on our roads, with 60-foot trucks being driven like race cars. It seems that these drivers were neither making allowances for conditions or staying to the right-hand, slower lane, or how about even using a bit of good, old-fashioned common sense. They certainly were not what I would expect of a professional Class 1 driver, or any driver for that matter.

Reader predicts Hatred root taxpayer uprise of shooting Dear editor,
Dear editor,
The [Maple Ridge] Official Community Plan (OCP) has been bantered about lately, so I decided to have a closer look and found www.cscd.gov.bc.ca/lgd/planning/officialcommunityplans.htm. I also talked with several civic leaders of other communities. The OCP was created by the provincial government to be used as a guide to develop land. One of the central problems with the OCP is there is nothing official about the Official Community Plan. At the end of the day, there is no official mechanism to enforce the OCP. For this reason, the document floats around out there and gets cited when it’s convenient – ignored just as often. As is the case of Susan Langdeau of Maple Ridge who recently spoke up, saying the OCP principles are ignored in her neighbourhood. The OCP was also cited in The TIMES article, Jan 14, Albion Proposed density sparks debate. Councillor Cheryl Ashlie put forth a motion to defer the application to build 288 homes, when the OCP would only allow 218 homes. Cheryl Ashlie`s concern didn’t appear to be the number of homes, but the cost of the homes. The affordability issue while admirable… She and council can’t do anything about cost, but they could open and amend the OCP to change the zoning to allow townhomes that would reduce the cost and offer more density. The big issue in Albion is not building more new homes, but development of retail stores and services for the existing citizens. I was surprised to recently read that Metro plan gets a green light despite ALR fears. Some farmland could be converted into industrial areas. Surrey, Langley, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, and Maple Ridge were mentioned. Gone is the green zone, replaced by new checks and measures and provides a master plan for development across the region to 2040, as the region grows by 50 per cent to 3.4 million. However, I would not be surprised to see the Albion development be put on the back burner in hopes of Target coming to town and by some miracle revitalizing the downtown into a shopping mecca. The Target press release clearly stated not all Zellers would be new Target stores. This is an election year and council would be well advised to speed up the proposed development of the Albion. I feel a voter uprising coming on a taxpayer revolt that will change the course of Maple Ridge. It is time for big changes in council and mayor. Vote for change November 2011.
Jim Bulpit, Maple Ridge
I wanted to respond to Lyn Cockburn’s excellent column, [Shooting killed common sense, Jan. 21 Opinion, TIMES]. Lyn has really revealed the underpinnings of that terrible tragedy in Arizona, hatred and intolerance in the American political realm. Yes, indeed America has once again displayed its darker side. Certain right-wing politicians fanning the fires of hatred is nothing new in the sordid history of American politics. Just look back to the McCarthyism of the ’50s, when many decent and innocent citizens, journalists, and trade unionists were branded communists. Their lives and careers were systemically ruined by the hatred, lies, and deceit of the right-wing elements in American politics. And, of course, now they invite and embrace the Chinese premier when there’s a chance at making a buck in trading relations. I hope that we as Canadians aspire to greater heights in our defence of real democracy, and how we conduct ourselves when running for office. We don’t need to follow America’s dandy bad example of ignorance and intolerance! We are going to have a busy year of politics ourselves in 2011, which I’ve coined the year of politics. And, we will have the opportunity to set an example of the way politics should be conducted, with respect and dignity, for our neighbours to the south. I’m so glad to be Canadian!
John McKenzie, Maple Ridge

Ada-Lou Ellet has been practising physiotherapy and therapeutic touch from home for six years. by Teija Beck
editorial@mrtimes.com
A fascia is like a spiderweb of connective tissues that exists throughout the body, running vertically and horizontally, surrounding muscles, blood vessels and nerves, and binding those structures together neatly. Unlike muscles, when fascia are tightened up through an injury, you cannot simply stretch them out. You can consciously move that really tight area, but that pulling will only tighten the fascia more. In her practice, Listening Hands, Pitt Meadows resident Ada-Lou Ellet uses her hands in a technique called myofascial release to release tight fascia in her patients’ bodies. While Ellet is a registered physiotherapist, since 1991 she has been practising therapeutic touch and other holistic techniques, incorporating the “science” of mainstream physiotherapy with nontraditional healing methods. “Sometimes where you feel the pain isn’t the source of the problem,” Ellet said. “It could be a problem
Ada-Lou Ellet works with a patient in her home. with energy and alignment. What I do with Listening Hands is I find where the source of your problem is, rather than just treating the symptoms.” With the help of her dog Sunny, who she says is a source of pure positive energy, Ellet has provided treatments to clients from across the Lower Mainland out of her Pitt Meadows home for about six years. “Energy is really important in the work I do,” she said. “You can tell from the room: there are no machines anywhere... and with the huge window, energy can just go out.” Ellet said the energy she portrays
during sessions is crucial, because her own positive energy will help her patients’ energy change. “Negative energy, trapped in our body, can create all sorts of physical symptoms that modern medicine — traditional Western medicine — just doesn’t acknowledge,” Ellet said. Ellet graduated from the University of British Columbia with a bachelor of science in rehabilitation sciences, both physical and occupational therapy, in 1966. She worked with patients with arthritis and with children for many years, but it was only after she saw a presentation on therapeutic touch in Kelowna that Ellet was inspired to take courses in holistic healing. Today, Ellet treats about 22 clients per week, from newborn babies, to car accident victims, to women suffering from fibromyalgia. “I work with the whole body,” Ellet said. “The pain will spread from where the initial injury is, so by getting in there and doing the therapeutic touch, you can actually reverse a lot of the injury.” While alternate healing does not appeal to everyone, Ellet says the patients she sees believe in her treatments, and their belief helps them heal.

Blood donations sustain lives
A Maple Ridge mother credits donors with keeping her alive until her transplants. by Teija Beck
editorial@mrtimes.com
Maple Ridge resident Melanie Terrett has had two life-saving procedures, a bone marrow transplant and a liver transplant, and now she is feeling stronger and healthier each day. But she knows that she would not have been well enough for those procedures without the help of thousands of “silent angels” who donated blood, the blood that sustained Terrett’s life. “Those big major gifts that everybody always recognizes and says, wow, those are amazing,” Terrett says. “Yeah they are, but I wouldn’t have had the chance to get those gifts if I hadn’t had all the other hundreds of people donate blood.” In 1995, while pregnant with her son, her doctor suspected that she had aplastic anemia, a condition where bone marrow does not produce enough new cells to replenish blood cells. “As I was giving birth, I was getting blood, so probably three or four bags, maybe, that time,” Terrett said. “That was my first ever blood transfusion.” Around the time her son turned four years old, Terrett became very sick with the aplastic anemia and required blood transfusions every week for two years. When those transfusions are added up, at two bags of blood per week for two years, the numbers speak of astounding generosity. On Valentine’s Day 2001, Terrett underwent a bone marrow transplant to combat her illness. “All those blood transfusions got me to the bone marrow transplant,” she said. In 2007, Terrett was diagnosed with hepatopulmonary syndrome, a terminal disease characterized by shortness of breath and low oxygen levels in the blood caused by liver disease. The only cure was a liver transplant. According to Canadian Blood Services, a liver transplant patient may require more than 100 units of blood, administered before and during the procedure. “It was really special to meet my bone marrow donor and thank him,” Terrett said with a smile. “But I know I’ll never get to meet those hundreds of... anonymous faces that go in every 56 days,

Today she encourages everyone who is able to donate. roll up their sleeves and don’t think anything of it, really.” After her successful bone marrow transplant, Terrett volunteered with Canadian Blood Services as a way of giving back to the people who helped her. “I haven’t done this since my liver transplant, but I used to speak for [Canadian Blood Services]
at their donor recognition evening at the Pan Pacific hotel downtown,” Terrett said. “I’ve been to clinics, talking to donors as they’re giving blood. Some of them are surprised to know that yeah, it does make a big difference. They just look at me like, really? And then I think they feel really good.” Angela Poon of Canadian
Blood Services in British Columbia and the Yukon said blood donation clinics are held in Maple Ridge every two weeks, with a target of about 96 people donating. “We almost always reach that goal, with a few exceptions,” Poon said. The average age of donors is about 43 in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, slightly older than the B.C. average age of 41, she said. People aged 17 to 19, and 30 to 34 being the most underrepresented demographics. Healthy people between the ages of 17 and 70, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to give blood. A typical blood donation appointment takes only one hour from registration to rejuvenating with cookies and juice at the end. Blood donation clinics are always on Fridays between 12:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church, 20245 Dewdney Trunk Rd., Maple Ridge. Poon recommends donors call ahead to reserve an appointment time. Phone 1800-2-DONATE, or visit Canadian Blood Services at www.blood.ca for more information.

The foundation put the donation toward a piece of equipment for the occupational therapists working in Maple Ridge Home Health services of Fraser Health as well as Cythera Transition House. “It’s a pressure mapping system,” said Annika Polegato, development manager for the foundation. She explained that it is a mattress with thousands of sensors in it, that helps nurses providing home care identify the location of bed or pressure sores, and how to treat the patients properly. “It relieves [the patient’s] pain and the

nurses’ number of visits,” said Polegato. “With the pressure system, because it’s all computerized, it can literally tell [the nurses] ‘use this pillow, put the bed at this angle.’ It’s really quite something.” The cultural society donated $2,500 from its annual golf tournament and another $7,000 from its annual gala, and the hospital just found out it has been chosen as a beneficiary again this year. “If feels good to know we are making a difference,” said Shalu and Anmol Malli, both volunteers with the cultural society. “We absolutely could not function without the support from the community,” said Polegato. “We are very thankful for the generosity RIMSACS has shown the hospital,” said Sandra Rankin, executive director for the RMHF. The fourth annual RIMSACS gala will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Ridge Meadows Seniors Activity Centre, 12150 224th St., starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $95, including entertainment and food, and are available by calling Annika Polegato at RMHF at 604-4666925.

Flames battle Kodiaks’ goalie After scoring the first goal on home ice Friday night, Ridge Meadows Flames couldn’t hold on for the win. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The local junior B team lost to the Delta Ice Hawks 6-5 last Tuesday night in Ladner, and were not able to redeem themselves last Friday night on home ice against the Aldergrove Kodiaks. Christopher (CJ) Legassic scored the first goal in the second period, but by the end of the period the Kodiaks were up 3-1 and with three goals in the third, the Flames were
unable to regain the top position again. Head coach Tavis Eaton said his team played really well, but they couldn’t manage to score on the Kodiaks’ goalie. “Their goalie was great,” he said, “he did an amazing job.” The Flames were working hard, with the majority of play down in the Kodiaks’ zone, and they had 53 shots on net to the Kodiaks’ 39. “We just couldn’t score,” said Eaton, “but those things do happen.” “We took a few bad penalties too,” he admitted, “and that didn’t help us.” Flames’ player Paul Piluso was named the second star of that game. The coach said the local
things can happen,” said Eaton. “They’ve just got to battle hard.” Last Tuesday the Flames were leading 3-0 into the second period, but once the Ice Hawks began scoring, it seems they were able to match them, goal for goal. The Hawks managed to score three in the last seven minutes of the third period, and then clinched the win in overtime at just 22 seconds. Legassic was named the second star of that game, after scoring three of the five goals. The local team will face the Delta Ice Hawks again on Friday at Planet Ice, starting at 7:30 p.m., and Eaton said he is encouraging them to stay positive and focus on winning.

Youth bowling league numbers go up
After declining enrolment for the past few years, league coordinator Jennifer Guitard said the league is gaining in popularity. by Teija Beck
editorial@mrtimes.com
Saturday mornings are busier than in previous years at Rev’s Bowling Centre in Maple Ridge, as children and youth aged five to 18 come out to bowl and see their friends. League coordinator Jennifer Guitard said there has been a recent resurgence of interest in bowling among youngsters. Sixty-seven children and youth are registered this year, up significantly from the 50 last year. “It’s been dying the last few years before this, and this year [enrolment] has come back up,” Guitard said. “We hope to build on that next year.” Guitard, who has been involved with the league for the past nine years, said she hopes children will keep encouraging their friends to get involved, and hopes to see around 75 kids signed up next year. Tammie Herman coaches the Bantam and

Jesse (left) and Kate, both members of the Jets bowling league for seven and under, used a two-handed technique. Jets divisions, and is impressed at the abilities of many of the children. “There are some children that are very good,” said Herman, who bowled competitively for around 30 years. Herman’s daughter Jessica has been bowling for six years and has a best score of 289, an impressive feat for a 10-year-old. Her teammate Sierra Meyer, 10, is also a six-year veteran of
the youth league and has a best score of 259. Jessica and her older sister Kylie (Junior division) will be going to Kamloops this year for the provincial competition in singles bowling, and more children from the league may still be eligible to go as well. Herman remarked with enthusiasm about the increase in youth bowlers in the league this year. “Some of the children this year have brought their friends,” she said. “The league has grown for sure.” Herman said children of all skill levels are welcome to come out and bowl, and that the kids learn new techniques as they age. “They hold the ball with two hands when they’re young because their hands are too small. We try to keep them consistent,” she explained, adding that children usually start bowling one-handed in the Bantam division when they can support the ball’s weight. Darcy Meyer, whose daughter Sierra is in the Bantam division, said her daughter picked the sport about six years ago and has stuck with it, enjoying the team atmosphere. “You can’t just miss a practice, you have to go for the sake of the team,” Meyer said. “I think it’s been good for us.”
Ramblers to 2nd The Maple Ridge senior girls basketball team moved up to second place in their league. With a score of 80-41 against Pinetree Secondary on Thursday night, the Maple Ridge Ramblers earned second place in what coach Don Herman called the “tough Fraser Valley North league.” The Ramblers play tonight. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Winter prompts reading ideas by Liza Morris Special to The TIMES
Ridge Meadows Flames PLAYER OF THE WEEK! S P O N S O R E D
We hear a lot these days about melting polar ice, disappearing glaciers, and changing weather patterns – not to mention our ongoing interest in life in the polar regions. During the colder days and long nights, why not engage in a little frozen adventure from the warm comfort of home? The following titles touch on the themes of cold, ice, and winter survival. For the scientist, Frozen Earth: The Once and Future Story of Ice Ages by Doug Macdougall, explores the causes and effects of the ice ages that have continually and radically impacted land formation and life on our planet. Using clues from the past, the author tries to work out when we will experience our next ice age. And from a different perspective, A World Without Ice by Henry Pollack explores ice and people. More specifically, it explores how current rapid ice loss will have a serious impact on the planet and why ice matters to all. Thin Ice: Unlocking the Secrets of Climate in the World’s Highest Mountains by Mark Bowen follows the career of Lonnie Thompson, an intrepid researcher who has risked his life and career in the highest and most remote equatorial ice caps. Challenging the accepted notion that the best information on our climate past and future is found in the polar regions, Thompson has spent more time than anyone else gathering samples in the “death zone,” the environment above 18,000 feet. Part adventure story, part scientific exposé, Thin Ice explains what Thompson’s data is telling us about climate change and the earth’s probable future. The adventurer might

Captain CJ had 4 goals in the last two games. Great time to heat up as the Flames are coming down the stretch in their run for the playoffs.
UPCOMING GAMES enjoy Snowstruck: In the Grip of Avalanches by Jill Fredston. As an avalanche stalker, Fredston predicts when and where avalanches will occur, triggers them with explosives, teaches avalanche survival, and helps in rescue efforts when avalanches strike. Reflecting on her wealth of personal experience, the author offers insight on avalanche forecasting, how one might avoid an avalanche, and what it’s like to be caught in one. In Cold: Adventures in the World’s Frozen
Places, author Bill Streever explores, month by month, everything from avalanches to glaciers, seals to snowflakes and igloos to icebergs. Travelling the world to experience some seriously cold environments and reflect on the history and science behind them, Streever comments on the cold that remains and what is left in its absence.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
