Hundreds pay respects to fallen worker
Friends and family are rallying support to help the family of a man killed at work Jan. 22. Family and friends packed St. Paul’s Lutheran Church this weekend to say goodbye to Samuel Kuris Jr. Hundreds filled the Laity Street church Saturday to pay respects to the 39-year-old Maple Ridge man, who was killed while working at a warehouse last week. Kuris died when his forklift fell on him at Summit Logistics in South Burnaby. His fellow employees described
him as a “dedicated family man” who worked to support his wife Shelley and their three children, aged 12, six, and three. Kuris was working to save money to take his family to Disneyland in April. According to Nick Volkow, a Burnaby councillor who is also a trucker for Summit Logistics, the accident occurred in a warehouse that was almost empty. The site had been the longtime warehouse for Canada Safeway, but last August, Safeway announced it was moving its warehouse operations to Langley and closing up the Burnaby site for good by Feb. 28. Volkow
said he was told there were only two people working to dismantle a heavy-duty shrink-wrapping machine. The machine had been used to wrap plastic around wooden pallets before they could be loaded and shipped. “It’s a pretty unbalanced piece of equipment,” said Volkow. “When this piece of equipment was first installed, it had to be installed by a crane.” Volkow said that during the decommissioning of the machine, it appears the two forklift drivers were trying to lift the machine using just forklifts and chains. WorkSafeBC is investigating.
“The piece of equipment shifted and it caused one of the forklifts to spin around and topple and the worker was thrown out of the cab and crushed,” said spokesman Scott McCloy. Kuris’ co-workers banded together last week to raise money for his family. Co-worker Cathy St. Pierre said Kuris did not have mortgage insurance, and the life insurance through the company only covers a few years. A bank account has been created as a trust for the three Kuris children: Jack, Silver and Liam. Donations can be made to VanCity, Account No. 176537, Branch 29.

Aboriginal grad rates still need to improve
The third education forum of the school year will explore how First Nations What’s OnLine students can be more successful in class.
Clerk vigilant
The validity of a man’s employment was in question, after a clerk at the Maple Ridge Dance Circle became suspicious. The man claimed to be working for a debit machine company, but the clerk was told the company did not have any service persons in Maple Ridge at that time. Police have now cancelled an alert they sent out Friday, noting the man who was deemed to be suspicious, is in fact legitimate. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

Aboriginal students’ graduation rates still lag behind their non-aboriginal counterparts but a forum next week will explore how that gap can be overcome. On Feb. 7, to complement the community forum on education and the school district forum on education held in November, the third piece, an aboriginal education forum, will take place. As far as Doug Hoey, principal of aboriginal education for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district, knows, the Aboriginal Education Forum and Winter Advisory, which will be attended by B.C. Lieutenant Governor Steven Point and his wife, will be another first for the school – as far as he knows, there hasn’t been an equivalent forum in the province. The graduation rate gap between aboriginal students and non-aboriginal students has remained fairly constant for a long time at about 10 per cent. Hoey would like to narrow this gap without lowering standards for nonaboriginals and this forum will be a place to explore how that can be achieved. Education has been delivered in pretty much the same way for about 150 years, Hoey said, and the school district is trying to figure out how it can offer education to students who have different learning styles. “I’m hoping people will think realistically about other ways of offering education,” Hoey said. While the Lieutenant-Governor will be in attendance at the forum, it is his wife Gwen Point, who will give the keynote address. Hoey said having her speak offers a “positive role model” to aboriginal students. The education of aboriginal students needs to be delivered so that they don’t feel like a failure, and this means respecting and teaching their culture, for example, focusing on their strong history of oral language.
MRSS student Sam Grace was making a mini button blanket at the Journeys program in the former Mount Crescent Elementary school.
Maria Rantanen/ITMES
“It’s the power of what you believe, and what I’m hoping is to help more students believe ... they can,” Hoey said. The focus in aboriginal education is how the new aboriginal education enhancement agreement, signed last March, can be put into practice to improve education for First Nations students, both on-reserve and off-reserve, and close the gaps in graduation rates. The aboriginal graduation rate is high, above 90 per cent, for students who make it to Grade 12. Where the school district is losing students
is in Grades 8 to 10, but student engagement of aboriginal students has to start earlier than that – as early as kindergarten, Hoey said. He is expecting about 100 people to come to the aboriginal education forum, which will be held at Meadow Gardens golf course. The same questions that were posed at the two previous forums will be asked within a context of aboriginal education: what skills are essential for success, where did you learn these essential skills, and how can schools be organized to help students learn these essential skills?

Chamber rebounding from rough year A wide array of professionals join the new chamber board. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The chamber of commerce was in much better shape in 2010, with a surplus of about $34,000. That follows a deficit of $93,000 in 2009.
The Chamber of Commerce Serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows held its annual general meeting Friday, and Jeremy Bekar was elected to continue as president for his second and final year, serving alongside seven new directors. “The board we have this year is spectacular,” Bekar said. Jesse Sidhu, the new executive director of the chamber of

commerce, pointed out the new board brings a lawyer and an accountant on board. “It’s a solid new board with a lot of leadership skills,” he said. Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean, who attended the AGM on behalf of the City, said he was surprised the chamber didn’t have a larger capital reserve. “I would have thought their financial position would have
been a little better,” he said. Terry Clark, an outside consultant that was hired to help reconfigure the chamber’s operations, was asked about the financial state of the chamber. “It’s certainly much, much better than the year 2009,” Clark said, noting in the past that some policies and procedures were not followed.

Audit results in small loss
Special education students’ files were reviewed, resulting in a clawback by the ministry. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The school district will lose almost $100,000 in an audit done by the Ministry of Education, and it’s happy. It was an audit into special education, and the superintendent of schools said it was a relief the amount wasn’t more than that. The ministry of education hasn’t audited the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district in 11 years, but every time there’s an audit, it results in clawbacks. Superintendent Jan Unwin said school districts often lose millions of dollars when they are audited, so after the ministry went through their special education student files “with a fine-toothed comb,” losing $100,000 wasn’t so bad.
“It sounds odd – we’re losing ally disabled or chronically health $100,000 and we’re happy about impaired students and “H” for intenit,” Unwin said at last Wednesday’s sive behaviour interventions or serboard meeting. ious mental illness. Wildwood info session in works
Councillors insist staff organize an information session for affected residents, after a report from Thurber Engineering said it was “highly unlikely” the construction of the Wildwood Trail between Hammond Road and Airport Way caused alteration of subsurface drainage. Concerns were raised, specifically from residents of the 19800 block of Wildwood Crescent that the trail construction had
caused increased moisture in the rear of their yards. Council examined the report on Tuesday and directed staff to organize a meeting for residents to voice concerns, then bring the matter back to a future council in committee meeting. “I think it’s important that we hear from the residents themselves,” said Councillor Deb Walters.
Net input sought Council directed staff to notify property owners surrounding the Meadow Gardens golf course that they will consider any public input about the height and safety requirements for an expanded

About 20 Port Haney residents and business owners wasted no time during the first meeting of 2011, immediately launching into a discussion about what changes they wanted to see in their community and how they envision making it happen. During a meeting last Wednesday, the Port Haney Neighbourhood Change Initiative tackled safety, affordable housing, parking, and speeding issues. The group has only been meeting for about four months, but has already conducted a safety walk of the region and drummed up ways to get involved to better the community. The group plans to take part in Arbor Day on April 16 by planting trees in Brickyard Park and also wants to clean up the park at 223rd Street and St. Anne Avenue, so it can be a usable green space. Discussion was lively on the new

Our View
Attacks need to be shifted to policies It’s going to be difficult to notice when we actually do have a federal election, seeing as how the campaigning has carried on so interminably since at least 2006. Attack ads have started running on television, and rumours are now circulating that an official campaign is just weeks away. Either way, a half-decade of pointless name-calling later, the stories are still the same. The Liberals say the Conservatives are a bunch of ogres with all sorts of nefarious schemes ready to hatch should they win a majority, and the Tories say Grit leader Michael Ignatieff is an opportunistic dilettante ready to leap into bed with whatever socialists and separatists will help him pursue the amusing hobby called leading our nation. Both Ignatieff and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have been busy lately trying to debunk each other’s notions, with Ignatieff bringing his best handshaking populism to targeted ridings, and Harper sitting down with the CBC to insist his sleeves are free of surprises. Of course, they both took the opportunity to say nasty things about each other, too. It is an occupational hazard of this constant semi-election, but it’s disappointing that our public figures still can’t find it in themselves to be civil. Trash the policy, but not the person. We all respect athletes for being gracious with their competitors, so why can’t we demand this of our public figures? Our failure to do so is what has led to this dumbing-down of our debate. Harper and Ignatieff are both supremely talented people who have done much they can be proud of in their lives. Both will be remembered as great Canadians. But it would be a surpassing achievement if they could publicly acknowledge this in each other.

2011 Citizen of the Year Call for Nominations DEADLINE - MARCH 25, 2011
“We ARE Maple Ridge”
Times Traveller
Photo reaction amazing Dear editor,
Last June The TIMES published a photo of my friend Cheryl Ashlie and I, taken while we were visiting Times Square in New York. The picture, cut from the paper, adorns the fridge in both our homes still. We have been amazed at the attention that little picture got and even recently I have run into people who say they saw the picture.
That funny, little picture brought us each a lot of pleasure and continues to remind us of a great holiday shared by friends. I’m sure that every one of the people whose photos you have printed have enjoyed the same result. Thanks so much for printing our photo, it made the holiday glow last just a little bit longer.

Education
Friends encouraged to help Dear editor,
In response to CUPE 703 president Leslie Franklin’s letter [‘Honour’ not deserved, Jan. 28 Letters, The TIMES], I would like to specifically respond to her comment where she wonders about me using my position of councillor to promote my friends. I am presently the secretary-treasurer for the volunteer-based board of directors for the Ridge Meadows Educational Foundation (RMEF). Three positions on this volunteer board are held for trustees from the board of education, whom they appoint. The seven remaining volunteer director positions. (more are permitted, but are not filled). are held by members of the community. My comment in the paper (the only one I made in the article Ms. Franklin is referencing) was in regards to me stating that since Dave Rempel and Kathie Ward are no longer the trustee representatives, they will be asked to join the RMEF board as community members, which is allowed under our constitution and the society’s act. I made this assertion to the reporter, because I had been given clear notice by many of the other volunteer directors of RMEF that they would like to ask them to come back as community members, since we could use the additional volunteers, which I agree with. And, yes, I consider Dave and Kathie my friends. And, yes, that makes me a councillor that promotes her friends to volunteer, which is hardly necessary with Dave and Kathie – as they volunteer extensively anyway. At the same time, I look forward to both Ken Clarkson and Susan Carr, the two new trustee representatives, coming onto the foundation board, as they have the same passion for public education as the rest of the RMEF board. And I know we will all work together to support the students of School District 42.
If anyone wants to be a friend to the Ridge Meadows Educational Foundation, you can find us on the school district website, under the community link.
Cheryl Ashlie, Maple Ridge councillor
Wildlife
Cougars are part of rural living Dear editor,
I have seen your article regarding the cougar frequenting the Maple Ridge area. First, I would like to thank you for stating the story in a more realistic manner than other new sources I’ve seen, where they are sensationalizing the issue by headlines such as “Killer Cougar.” I am an avid outdoors person, and fully appreciate the danger a cougar can pose in a populated area with children and pets. With that, I believe it is beneficial to reiterate and educate people on the precautions and steps that can be taken to ensure their safety. I have attached a document from the Comox Valley MTB [available with the online version of this letter at www. mrtimes.com, click on “Opinion”], regarding the recognition of signs of a cougar’s presence and actions to be taken as precautions. As many Maple Ridge residents live in more rural areas, it is inevitable that we will have wildlife sharing our backyards from time to time, and I hate to see wildlife destroyed due to our ignorance.

Pitt Meadows
Library offers night of fun for families A coordinated evening of games is set to run February through April. by Teija Beck
editorial@mrtimes.com
Family Games Nights are back at the Pitt Meadows Library this spring. The monthly event, held on the first Wednesday of each month, began last spring as a way for families to play together. “We’ve got Risk, Sorry, Trouble, chess and checkers, and cards with many instructions for different games,” said librarian Sandy Richardson, who helps run the event. “We tried not to put a real specific age group on it because we have such a variety of games.” So far most games nights are quiet, with only a few families attending, but Richardson is optimistic the word will spread. “We’re not getting as many people as we wanted,” she said. “We’ll stick with it…. We want to build up a core group, and that takes a while.” Richardson said the families who have attended in the past have “had a ball” with the games, and enjoyed the refreshments served: juice boxes, pop, and cookies. The next Family Games Night is Feb. 2 from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Pitt Meadows Library, 12047 Harris Rd.

Flames celebrate triumph
The local junior B hockey team moved back up to third place in their division, after winning both weekend games. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The Ridge Meadows Flames were in their element on home ice Friday night, and dominated play against the Delta Ice Hawks. The final score was 5-2. “Delta is a very good team,” said head coach Tavis Eaton. His team lost to them in overtime on Jan. 18. “But we kept up our advantage,” he
said, “and the kids played really well defensively.” The Flames were on the scoreboard just four minutes into the first period, with a goal from Christopher (CJ) Legassic, and did not allow the Ice Hawks to gain the upper hand. “We’re starting to play a lot better as a group,” said Eaton. The local team played well again on Sunday against the Mission Icebreakers, and although it was a closer final score, of 6-4, the Flames still clinched their second straight win in just a few days. “It was a good weekend,” said Eaton. “I just keep telling the guys to work hard and we can turn it around.”

In their opening game against the Walnut Grove Gators, the Maple Ridge Ramblers wasted no time scoring baskets, and coach Don Herman said this beginning game was a “good team effort.” Walnut Grove is one of the few teams Ridge has played this year, whose average height is taller than theirs, but Herman said his team’s “defensive pressure didn’t allow [Walnut Grove] to get their ball to their bigs in the post.” MRSS managed to convert many of Walnut Grove’s turnovers into quick scores on breakaway layups, and finished with a score of 6920. Herman knew that his team had a tough test on Saturday against the Gleneagle Talons, but Ridge held on for another win and finPlayoffs are fast approaching for the MRSS senior ished with a final score of girls basketball team. 63-34. The action continued on Sunday, with a game against New West, and Herman said the final was “very exciting” for both him and his team. “New West were also very impressive,” he said, “making a big comeback after being down 20 at one point in the first half to lead by one point with about five minutes remaining in the game.” Ridge won by four points, with a final score of 70-66. Herman said some timely three-pointers by Coral Lee Antaya gave their team back the lead, and clutch-free throws by Kolbie Orum in the final minute preserved the victory. “It was also our seniors’ night,” he said, “celebrating the careers of our three graduating players.” Marina Casol, Natasha Henderson and Zoe Yoxall are all leaving high school this year, and Herman said they all played outstanding games. “It was very fitting that they were true leaders in this game,” he said, “playing their best game of the season.” The Ramblers play their last league game at Riverside on Tuesday (tonight), and then travel to the Island for the Stelly’s tournament to finish the regular season. Their playoffs start Feb. 10.

GEBAUER, Dean Eric
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dean Gebauer after a brief illness. Dean passed away peacefully at home, in the loving arms of his wife, Suzanne, surrounded by family. The eldest son of Eric and Joyce Gebauer, and brother of Richard, who predeceased him, Dean was born in Vancouver and grew up in Maple Ridge. After graduating from Garibaldi Senior Secondary School, Dean obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at Simon Fraser University. He worked for the Hudson Bay Company, rising through the ranks to become a manager. His business career was very successful, but his true calling was teaching, and 20 years ago, Dean made a complete career change to become a high school teacher. Soon, he was teaching a variety of courses at the secondary school level. Dean’s vocation was the work he did for 17 years with the P.O.W.E.R. Program, an alternate program in the New Westminster School District and a program he helped to develop. Judging from the outpouring of love and support from past and present students, Dean was a hugely positive influence in the lives of many young people. Dean was very involved in advocacy with the New Westminster Teachers’ Union and the BCTF, holding many local executive positions and the position of Vice-President of the NWTU at the time of his passing. Dean was passionate about public education and he brought intelligence, compassion and integrity to this role. He held the admiration and respect of teachers and administrators alike in his role of supporting teachers, students and public education. Dean leaves to mourn his wife, Suzanne; his mother, Joyce (Lise); his father, Eric (Connie); his mother- and father-in-law, Dorothea and Patrick; sisters-in-law, Yvette and Annette; as well as his beloved nephews and niece, Jordan, Matthew, and Hailey. Dean loved running, cooking, working on his Langley property, poetry, the Vancouver Canucks, their dog, Sally, and most of all travelling throughout the world with Suzanne. He was intelligent, caring, and naturally curious; his sense of humour was unforgettable. He was devoted to his family, friends, students, and colleagues. He had a tremendous impact on many people’s lives. A prayer vigil will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 20676 Fraser Highway, Langley, on Thursday, February 3, at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 4, celebrant Rev. Don Larson. A celebration of Dean’s life will follow in the church hall. Interment will be at Gardens of Gesthemani, Surrey, B.C. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the P.O.W.E.R. Program, which was so close to Dean’s heart. Cheques may be sent to The P.O.W.E.R. Program, 1001 Columbia St., New Westminster, B.C. V3M 1C4. ‘O Valiant Heart’ Messages of Condolences may be left for the family at www.kearneyfs.com

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
