Day-old puppy abandoned in shoebox

‘Peanut’ the puppy has been fighting for her life since she was found Friday, but a vet is optimistic she’ll recover. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Dr. Adrian Walton was exhausted on Monday morning. The Dewdney Animal Hospital vet had been up all weekend, every two hours, to feed a tiny abandoned puppy, no bigger than a fully-grown hamster, that was found discarded Friday afternoon. Peanut, as the puppy has now been named, was found under the bench of a 207th bus stop and brought to the Maple Ridge SPCA. The black and white, mixed-breed puppy weighed only 157 grams and was in a shoebox with a fleece blanket, that was wrapped in a garbage bag. “The people [who found her] heard some whimpering,” said Maple Ridge SPCA manager Mark Vosper. “And they brought her to us.” “It was cold enough that if it would have been an hour more, she would have stopped vocalizing and no one would have found her,” said Walton. Vosper brought her to the vet right away, and

puppy in a litter. “The emergency hospital got a call for a dystocia case, [difficulty giving birth], but they couldn’t say if it was from Maple Ridge or not,” Walton siad. “My guess is that we have a dead mother.” Peanut has now gone home with Vosper and he

will be fostering her while searching for a surrogate mother. BC SPCA animal cruelty investigators are now on the case, and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the owner of the puppy or any of the other puppies. “She is out of danger and she is now eating

every four hours,” said Vosper. “There’s loads of vets in town, everyone knows the SPCA,” he said, “so there’s no excuse is there. “ Anyone with information is asked to please call the Maple Ridge SPCA at 604463-9511. Vosper noted that the Maple Ridge shelter

Planning programs with no guaranteed funding doesn’t sound like a sound fiscal plan. But that’s what government told the family education centre in Maple Ridge to do next year, while waiting for a decision on a gaming grant. The centre has been told to apply for its 2011-2012 funding in August, but they won’t hear about the success or failure of their grant until February 2012 – halfway through the funding cycle. The centre was told to use their operating funds while waiting for a gaming grant, which executive director Faye Luxemburg-Hyam said is “not fiscally appropriate.” Alternatively, they can apply for an advance from the government. But it’s difficult to plan programs when they don’t know how much money they will get, she said. Waiting until February to hear about their gaming grant will put them midway through the programming year. When Luxemburg-Hyam started working at the family education

In 2007, she said she had to fight to get $72,000, and by 2010 gaming dollars dropped to $19,561. “It feels the attack is on the community,” Luxemburg-Hyam said. With less funding, all the same programs run but on a limited basis. “We go as far as the money goes, and then we stop,” she said.

Diane Speirs has been the chair of the board of directors for about 10 years, but it’s been in recent years when money has been tighter than ever. “It’s never been a cakewalk... but it’s certainly gotten worse in the last six years,” Speirs said. She has been involved with the family education centre since the birth of her first child 25 years ago, at which time she took parenting classes there.

The gaming grants are used for things like the centre’s Christmas hamper program, first aid and CPR courses for parents of young children, and girls self-esteem and leadership programs. It’s also used to provide subsidies for people who can’t pay for programs. All education programs have to be self-supporting, LuxemburgHyam said. But if the centre can’t find out about whether they’ll be funded or not, it’s hard to have a continuum of programming. On the one hand, there’s talk about how gaming is doing well; on the other hand, many agencies have had cuts to the gaming grants, Speirs said. The family education centre’s annual budget is about $1.5 million. Luxemburg-Hyam said no business could operate like the government is suggesting they do – planning programs with no guaranteed funding. Total gaming revenue in 2009/10 in British Columbia was $1.07 billion. In the fiscal year of 2010/11, which ends March 31, the total is estimated to be $1.12 billion. In the fiscal year of 2010/11, about 6,000 community groups will receive $120 million in gaming grants.

Father sues in sushi crash

More than two years after a man drove into a restaurant in Westgate, the father of two of the victims has filed a lawsuit. Michael Corbin said that he is going to continue to make as much noise as he can, and is not going to let the matter drop in an effort to gain some justice for his son Joel, and his daughter Juanita. “The victim is left out in the cold,” he said. “Our kids are going to suffer for their entire lives.” Corbin said someone has to be held responsible for what happened, after the driver, Brian Irving, was found not criminally responsible in October 2009. He had originally been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder, with the charges later reduced to two counts of criminal negligence causing death and seven of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. Two psychiatrists testified he was suffering from delirium caused by alcohol withdrawal and didn’t know what he was doing at the time. “My son is not responsible,” said Corbin. “He had no choice in anything that happened.” Irving was released from Colony Farms Forensic Psychiatric Hospital against the recommendation of a psychiatrist in January 2010. “We have people who choose to drink and then stand behind alcohol as a disease,” said Corbin. His son Joel was left with severe brain injuries, and Corbin said his daugh-

ter still suffers from nightmares after the incident that killed two people and injured seven in total. Corbin is suing Irving and two physicians for damages. “They’re [the physicians] are responsible for not having passed the information on that [Irving] wasn’t allowed to drive,” he said. “These are not general practitioners, they’re specialists,” he said. “They should know better.”

Pole fire closes Dewdney

Traffic had to be diverted on Dewdney Trunk Road between 207th and 210th Streets in the early morning hours of Monday, as members of B.C. Hydro, Mounties, and firefighters worked to put out the utility pole fire. A hydro utility pole had caught fire on Dewdney, near Rosewood Street, and members of B.C. Hydro had to turn off the electricity so the fire could be extinguished by the fire department. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Power use sparks raid

There were 239 marijuana plants in various stages of growth seized when Ridge Meadows RCMP’s street enforcement unit and a marijuana enforcement team executed a search warrant on a home in the 21800 block of Dewdney Trunk Road Friday morning. Police were able to obtain a warrant after they received a report that power was being stolen at the home. Police arrested a 28-year-old man who was later released from police custody, but at a later date, he will have to appear in court on charges of cultivation of a controlled substance.

Cyclist injured in collision

A 32-year-old man was taken to hospital after he was hit while riding his bicycle on 223rd Street at Dewdney Trunk Road on Sunday.

A compact car struck the man just before 3:30 p.m. and the Ridge Meadows RCMP, Maple Ridge fire department, and B.C. Ambulance Services attended. The injuries to the cyclist are felt to be non-life threatening, and police have charged the 19-year-old woman driver for failing to yield the right of way under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Boat stolen

A 10-foot aluminium boat was stolen from the yard of a home in the 12200 block of 233rd Street in Maple Ridge between 9 and 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Police are now investigating the theft and asking for the public’s assistance in catching the thieves.

Pizza Hut computer stolen Thieves broke into the Pizza Hut restaurant, located in the 20400 block of Lougheed Highway, between 6 and 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. The criminals broke the glass on the front door to gain access and made off with the restaurant’s computer.

Civic stolen on Abernethy

Ridge Meadows RCMP are looking for a red 1994 Honda Civic that was stolen from the 23900 block of Abernethy Way, sometime between 2 and 6 a.m. on Sunday morning. The car had British Columbia licence plate 589 TFB on it at the time of the theft. Voting a piece of democracy This week, everyone has gotten at least a small chuckle out of the cat signed up as a BC Liberal member. If it was taken seriously, this feline voter could prompt promises of tax-free fancy feast from the top candidates. This kind of prank, or sabotage, is inevitable when the parties are in furious pre-election mode. The Liberals have sworn to sign up more than 35,000 new members during their race, roughly doubling the size of their party. The NDP has already closed its membership sign-ups, but thousands of new members have no doubt jumped aboard. Still, these party members are but the barest fraction of the population of B.C. Yet between them, they’ll determine the next one or two premiers of our province. Many people have no inclination to become a member of a political party. They may be disinterested, or simply find neither party to be a good fit. Those of us who are members of neither party have a series of binary decisions facing us in the next few years. Is it worth it to vote at all? Do we vote based on our local candidates or on the promises of the party leaders? Do we vote Liberal or NDP? Major party or third party alternative? But the choices of leaders, who can do so much to shape this province’s destiny, will be out of our hands. While political leaders urge us to vote, another way to be heard is to stay outside of the political process, and to advocate for important issues. Whether it’s education or health care, policing or farming, the province has a great deal of power. As the potential leaders crisscross the province, make your voice heard. Talk to your friends, your coworkers, fellow parents at your school, the members of your hockey team or curling rink. Write letters to the newspapers, to your MLA. Start a petition, donate to an advocacy group. Educate yourself. Voting, for either a party leader or an elected official, is just the visible tip of democracy. It’s supported – and dwarfed – by the work of many hundreds of thousands of people of good conscience. M.C.

I enjoy watching Pitt Meadows mayor and council move forward with progressive plans of development, led by AECOM, a global provider of professional technical support services. This study is being completed by a professional team of agrologists, transport engineers, and land use urban designer with Colliers International – a major player in business and land development. The team will have a comprehensive report to Pitt Meadows council in March. The area of study along Lougheed Highway has been vacant land for decades. This is the proper method of developing land to bring forth the very best use of land that will benefit the community and the City from a financial and employment point of view. Cost $40,000. In stark contrast, Maple Ridge chose to hold a planning charette for the Albion area. Invited special interest groups all with their own agenda, they hijacked the process. Not one land-use professional was included in this ridiculous Charette. This $100,000 process was a gigantic waste of time and money, asking 29 groups and societies what was wanted, and produced nothing but questions. The charette was a gong show from start to finish with no firm direction set to date. Let us compare the two communities: • Pitt Meadows is a City with a population of about 17,000 with two malls; good shopping including Superstore, Winners, JYSK, Sportchek, and a wide array of retail stores selling clothing and household goods. The Cineplex movie theatre rounds out

the mall that appears to be very busy seven days a week. The other mall on Harris Road is anchored by the IGA food store along with a wide range of products and services. Pitt Meadows has some manufacturing and a newly developed industrial park, offers new jobs and prosperity to the City. Add to the above the new proposed shopping centre along Lougheed Highway which will bring tax relief, new jobs, and greater shopping. • Maple Ridge is not a city, but does have a population of about 75,000, with three malls, and four large grocery stores adequately services our needs. We also have two large drug stores selling a wide range of goods for health and home. We also have two good hardware and building products stores. Furniture and household appliances are also well represented as is automotive sales and repair services. My point: On a per capita basis, Maple Ridge does not have 4.4 times the stores and services that our neighbour has. Why and how is it possible for Pitt Meadows to move forward with relative ease? All the while, Maple Ridge continues to languish with the poorest tax ratio residential to commercial. Maple Ridge has beautiful settings with mountains and rivers, parks, and pastures with mild temperatures most of the year, truly a great place to live. People continue to be drawn by the surroundings and our very competitive housing prices, creating demand for jobs and services. Vote for change November 2011.

Dear editor,

I am probably the last person in the world to hear about those poor dogs in Whistler and I wish I had never heard about it at all. I have never been more disgusted in my life. Not only was it completely wrong to breed dogs specifically for one occasion, but to have absolutely no better plan then to slaughter them when they were done with them is just horrific. The Olympics was a time for us to shine and to stand out to the rest of the world and these monsters, for lack of a better word, have put our entire province, if not country, to shame. How anyone could be so heartless is just beyond me. To think that someone actually thought that slaughtering those dogs was a better idea than just giving them away absolutely repulses me. Whoever was responsible for this should be put in jail for life. This person obviously has no respect for the life of another being. If fishing in certain areas is illegal then this psycho should be taken out of society and be treated like the repulsive “human being” that he or she is. Those dogs could have completed 100 different families and instead the world looks at us in disgust because of one choice that one person made and no one thought to stop. It’s sickening.

In response to [Honour not deserved, Jan. 28 Mailbag, TIMES] by Leslie Franklin, I wish mainly to correct some of the facts in that submission. The Board of Education, at a closed board meeting – not an individual trustee – made the decision re: the $230,000 expenditure. Every employee in School District 42 has in their contract a long-term disability insurance provision, including the secretary-treasurer. It need not to be negotiated upon leaving the district, as Ms. Franklin suggested. The letter states that “we got rid of most of the previous dysfunctional school trustees.” Just for the record, four of the trustees on the 2005-2008 board did not seek reelection in November 2008. The fact that these four trustees are not members of the present board had nothing to do with the “we” influence. As for the comment: “Trustees have a good reason to remove Trustee Rempel and Ward…”

A woman charged in the death of a 16year-old Maple Ridge teenager attended a focus hearing on Feb. 1 and will return to court for a preliminary inquiry on Valentine’s Day. Victoria Turley was originally scheduled to go to trial on Feb. 14, but filed a reelection application to have her case tried in supreme rather than provincial court. Crown spokesperson Neil McKenzie

said that the preliminary hearing is the “stage in the process where some evidence is generally called.” “Investigators were informed Shannon [Ryamond] had been attending a social function at a private residence in Maple Ridge [July 2008]. Police are alleging at this time that the accused failed to provide the necessaries of life and Crown counsel has approved a charge,” RCMP Supt. Everything went smoothly for Ryan Stone and his crew, from the time they left Canada to the end of the competition in Lyon, France. And, although it was not the result Canada was hoping for, it is still considered a great achievement. “It was a good result,” said Canada team manager Vincent Parkinson, “but you invest so much into it, you always want to get higher.” Stone, who grew up in Maple Ridge, has trained for this event – known as the culinary Olympics – since 2008. He’s actually been living and breathing the competition for the past six months. Parkinson said Stone

and the rest of the team were expecting a different result, and were not sure why the judges didn’t mark them higher. “The judging seemed to be going in a different direction, I think,” he said. Stone was naturally disappointed at first, but has now taken some time off and will not return from France soon. “I asked him what he was going to do with all his spare time,” Parkinson laughed. The quality of the work is so high at this competition that 12th place is still a win for the Canadian team, Parkinson added. Rasmus Kofoed from Denmark won the competition. The Canadian dishes comprised monkfish with cauliflower mousse and caviar, langoustine and golden beet jelly, Scottish crab and dashi terrine and pea and bacon tart. The meat platter featured herb and mustard wrapped lamb, lamb steak and kidney sausage, sweetbread potato tart, sunchoke and truffle ‘marrow,’ golden beet with eggplant and pine nuts.

Throughout the extensive consultation process, led by the consultancy firm HB Lanarc with lead consultant Mark Holland, no common consensus could be found on how to develop the Albion Flats. Therefore, four concept plans were developed for council to consider with a dividing line at 105th Avenue.

Currently, the great divide on the Albion Flats is 105th Avenue – land commission staff has said it doesn’t think the land west of 105 will be excluded from the ALR. Councillor Craig Speirs told The TIMES his bottomline is he’ll support development east of 105th Avenue, if it supports drainage issues on the west side of 105. Speirs said the land west of 105 is “top

grade” agricultural land but it has some drainage problems. “I think we really have to think what’s possible when dealing with very sensitive ecosystems and valuable farmland,” Speirs said. Once the land is paved over, “you’ll never get it back,” he added. “SmartCentres made a huge mistake buying farmland,” he said. “They specu-

lated and sometimes speculators lose.” Council got its first chance to publicly comment on four concept plans that were released to the public on Friday. Council will possibly decide tonight (Tuesday) whether to send the four options to the agricultural land commission and to meet with them, or whether to develop some other plan of action.

Girl Guides of Canada – Guides du Canada (GGC) has been helping girls of all ages reach their potential since 1910. Through an endless variety of fun-ﬁlled activities, this trailblazing organization provides girls with opportunities to develop valuable life skills, become self-reliant, build friendships, and develop a sense of well-being and self-worth. The Guiding movement began in 1909, at a Scouting rally at Crystal Palace in London, England, when a parade of girls convinced Boy Scouts founder Lord Robert Baden-Powell to design a program for them. Impressed with their enthusiasm, Baden-Powell asked his sister, Agnes, to spearhead a girls’ organization called the Girl Guides. The movement spread quickly, promoted internationally by Agnes and, later, by Baden-Powell’s wife, Olave (Lady Baden-Powell).

In 1927, a Girl Guide leader in Regina baked cookies for her girls as a simple way to raise money for uniforms and camping equipment. Little did she know that she was starting one of Canada’s greatest traditions - Girl Guide cookies. Currently, all GGC cookies are produced in a nut-free and peanut-free bakery and now also contain 0 grams of trans fats. Today, Girl Guide cookies are the ofﬁcial fundraiser of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada. All-star sets sights on big leagues A Pitt Meadows student plays lacrosse all over the Lower Mainland, and hopes to attend a top division one school in the U.S. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

No one could ever say that Riley Glemnitz is not totally committed to Canada’s national sport. The 16-year-old Pitt Meadows resident has been playing lacrosse for nine years, and plays junior and senior lacrosse at Pitt Meadows Secondary, for Team BC, the Ridge Meadows Burrards, and the Burnaby Mountain Selects. He has also played for the Langley Thunder Intermediate A team and the Ridge Meadows Intermediate B team last box lacrosse season, as well as with the Ridge Meadows Midget team. It’s quite an extensive list. “One of my older brother’s friends, who he played hockey with,” said Riley, “had us over at his house for a barbecue and I tried it in his backyard.” He hasn’t looked back since. Rather than box lacrosse, which is indoor lacrosse, Riley prefers field lacrosse and that is ultimately what he wants to play south of the border. His time with the Burnaby Mountain

Playing with Burnaby Mountain Selects has given Riley Glemnitz a taste of high-level lacrosse. Selects (BMS) has given him a taste of that atmosphere with their youth-to-collegiate-to-pro model for B.C. athletes. “I like playing for the Burnaby Mountain Selects team for several reasons,” he said. “The coaches are really great and they taught me a lot about the game, [but] it was [also] such a fun experience travel-

ling to the university tournaments, sightseeing in New York and Washington, and San Diego and touring the campuses.” Riley said before the BMS he had not played a high level of lacrosse, except for his first year on Team BC the year prior. He has proven himself to be a valuable member of the BMS team, and one of his coaches, Brent Hoskins, said “Riley is a strong, athletic midfielder who can

power through opponents, [and] he really became a great driver for us this season.” The young player was also recently chosen as the offensive MVP for the fall sophomore elite team at the BMS’s recent awards team. Racking up the awards and the opportunities doesn’t seem to phase the young player, however, who although has his sights on such prestigious schools as Syracuse University, Johns Hopkins or Cornell, still manages to balance his life and his school work. “I’ve been having to work pretty hard with [the school work],” he said, “but actually it can be pretty balanced.” He doesn’t know what he wants to study in school yet, but he does know lacrosse will be a part of his future. “I hope that what I’m learning from the Burnaby coaches will help prepare me to play at a university level,” he said. Hoskins doesn’t see a problem with Riley’s goals at all. “He definitely has the size, skill, and speed to play at the next level,” he said, “and will hopefully continue to work hard, both on the field and in the classroom, towards achieving his goal of playing college lacrosse.” He is now playing his fourth season of field lacrosse, is going into his fourth tournament with Team BC this September, and is travelling to Las Vegas in March with the BMS for a tournament. He is happy being busy with everything that is going on and is preparing for what he hopes will be a bright future running up and down the lacrosse fields in the United States. “I think it would be cool to stay down there and coach,” he said, “but I haven’t thought about getting a coaching degree or anything yet.”

Bikers enjoy a winning start to cycling season

The Local Ride women’s cycling team won World Cup medals on the weekend of their first training camp.

It was a win-win situation for the cycling team from Maple Ridge’s Local Ride in late January, with teammates Laura Brown and Steph Roorda taking silver medals on the World Cup track in Beijing. This was also the weekend of the team’s first training camp in 2011, and team manager Barry Lyster said they couldn’t have imagined a better start to the 2011 cycling season. “A world cup medal on the same week-

end as our first camp,” he said, “it’s the best possible way to motivate these talented women.” Without Roorda and Brown, the rest of the team dedicated themselves to training during the two weekend rides in Langley, and Lyster said members of last year’s Local Ride Racing squad, Lisa Perlmutter, Jenelle Cassidy and Rachel Canning were joined by new members Jasmin Glaesser, Jessica Hannah, and Sarah Coney. “The scope and impact of this team is evident with Roorda and Brown winning silver at a track World Cup,” said team director Jeremy Storie, “while the rest of the team was training and mentoring a young rider who will become a mainstay

Sunday was spent with three and a half hours on the road, and some team chases and lead-out drills. “All in all, it was a solid weekend of training,” said Storie. “But perhaps more importantly the team can look forward to the upcoming season knowing that they will have the personnel that can get the job done.”

Miranda Tymoschuk was awake when she had the last surgery ever on her leg, and although she didn’t dare look, she is now looking forward to raising money to help others, the same way she was helped during her past nine surgeries. The 14-year-old went to Royal Columbian Hospital recently, to not only have her surgery, but also to donate more than $1,500, some baby clothes, and a game to the hospital’s Pay it Forward Fund. This fund helped her and her mom when she was in the hospital for surgery to treat her condition, known as Posteromedial Bowing, meaning her left tibia bowed outwards and grew more slowly than her right leg. Now the fund, including her money, has helped more than 41 families, and has purchased items such as parking tickets and gas for families trying to balance hospital costs. Tymoschuk said her last surgery went well, but her favourite part was giving the money and goods to social worker Cheri King. “It feels really weird,” she said about having had her last surgery. “I’m so used to thinking I need another surgery.” Tymoschuk returned to school on Wednesday after taking a few days off
