Investigation

G20 officer scrutinized for alleged shooting

Toronto police say they are investigating claims a Maple Ridge woman was shot with rubber bullets. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

A police officer who allegedly shot a Maple Ridge woman with rubber bullets at the G20 summit in Toronto last summer is being

criminally investigated. Natalie Gray, who was allegedly shot with rubber bullets while at a protest against the G20 summit, filed a $1 million civil suit against the Police Services Board and unnamed officers, but last week her lawyer asked for an officer to be investigated, and police confirmed one is underway. An investigation is “a small comfort, considering how much they had to be pressured into investigating this,” Gray said.

Maple Ridge’s Natalie Gray was at a protest at the G20 summit where she claimed she was shot with rubber bullets. There was no justification for use of force in that situation — near the holding centre where detained protesters were being held — since those gathered out-

side were behaving peacefully, claims Gray’s lawyer, Clayton Ruby. Gray said because there is video evidence of her being allegedly shot with rubber bullets, her lawyer believes her case should be fairly straightforward. Gray said she was protesting at the G20 summit in solidarity with the victims of other G20 summits. “Most victims of police brutality lack access to the media and high-profile lawyers who can

force the police to take action,” Gray said. “White middle-class people aren’t usually the victims of police violence. Indigenous peoples, poor people, migrants ... and others take the brunt of it.” Gray filed a lawsuit claiming damages against Toronto police in September. In a defence statement dated Jan. 28, the Toronto Police Services Board asked for the action to be dismissed. Gray is currently living in Montreal.

Mounties made an unexpected drug bust while checking cars heading back and forth on the Golden Ears Bridge. The crackdown was inspired by Langley RCMP Supt. Derek Cooke’s bust of a toll evader last October. Tolls on the bridge are collected electronically, based on reading licence plates or through electronic boxes on drivers’ dashboards. Cooke staked out the bridge and caught a chronic toll evader who had illegally altered his licence plate so that the automatic system wouldn’t be able to track him down and send him a bill. Last week, traffic officers from the RCMP decided to spend a single afternoon looking for similar problems on the bridge. They found more than they bargained for. Officers did find five licence platerelated infractions, said spokesperson RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks. They also gave tickets for two people who were driving without a licence, two violations for commercial trucks, five for distracted driving, 13 for failure to wear a seatbelt, two for tinted or cracked windows, a

Career criminal tires of life behind bars A sentence of up to eight years is recommended for a robber convicted 50 times.

by Jennifer Saltman Postmedia Network Inc.

A local man who has the “distinction” of reaching 50 criminal convictions should be given a sentence of six to eight years for robbery, Crown argued last week. A B.C. Supreme Court jury found Chad Allen Stewart guilty last May of robbery, disguising his face, and possession of stolen property. Stewart, who was 28 years old at the time, wore a mask and brandished a large knife when he robbed the Subway restaurant in the 22800 block of Lougheed Highway in

Maple Ridge on Jan. 31, 2009. He fled, with an undisclosed amount of cash, in a stolen car. He was caught and arrested nearby a short time later, and remained in custody ever since. The incident occurred shortly after Stewart finished a federal prison sentence for a robbery in Langley. Prosecutor Peter Ng said Stewart’s criminal record began in 1994. He had 32 adult charges before his current convictions. Stewart’s adult record includes 15 theft or possession of stolen property charges, three flight or escape charges, one break-and-enter, and four robbery charges. “Rehabilitation is not a primary concern [in sentencing],” Ng said during last Tuesday’s hearing. Ng suggested a sentence of between six and eight years – a step

up from his last robbery sentence of 3½ years -minus time served. Stewart should be given double credit for the two years and eight days he was in pretrial custody. Defence lawyer Darrel Schultz said Stewart is a very “personable” young man with “great potential.” “To frame him entirely at his worst would not do justice to him,” said Schultz, who has represented Stewart for a number of years. Stewart spoke on his own behalf, telling Justice John Harvey he’s not blaming his actions on his tough upbringing. “I made the choices on my own,” said Stewart who spent much of his life behind bars. “I do want to change,” he said. “This is getting old and I’m tired of this.” Harvey is scheduled to deliver his decision March 15.

A wood carving honouring hometown hero Cam Neely will be unveiled at Planet Ice next Wednesday. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Cam Neely’s name is synonymous with Maple Ridge. The former Vancouver Canuck, and Boston Bruin, grew up here, started his hockey career here, and will now be returning here to see a wood carving unveiled in his honour. This is a project that started in the lead-up to the Olympics, explained Cheryl Johnson, vice-president of the Maple Ridge Mountain Festival Society. “It was so difficult [to pick someone],” she said, “because there are so many amazing sports heroes that hail from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.” The society chose Neely because he epitomizes a sports hero, said Johnson, and it was decided the society would work with chainsaw carver Glenn Greensides to create this dedication. The sport hero carving is part of a month-long Spirit Festivals program in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and throughout the province. The carving will be unveiled Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m., at Cam Neely arena in Planet Ice.

Private school rejects rankings by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district ignored the Fraser Institute school rankings, while Meadowridge, – which ranked top in the province – rejected the rankings. SD42 superintendent Jan Unwin said last week that she hadn’t even noticed that the Fraser Institute had released its rankings – a reflection on how unimportant they are for the school district. The Fraser Institute Report Card, a ranking of all schools in the province based on the foundation skills assessment was released Feb. 7. Schools in SD42 were largely ranked in the middle of the pack. “The ranking is the part everybody [in the school district] is the most annoyed about so we don’t look at them,” Unwin said. The rankings have been covered less in the media in the last few years, she said, so it’s not as prom-

Halibut fishing season still on hold A town hall meeting has been scheduled for Feb. 21 in Pitt. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

No one is currently allowed to fish for halibut, but the BC Sport Fishing Coalition (BCSFC) wants to make sure that everyone wanting the chance this year is aware

that the recreational fisherman could be in the midst of a crisis. Since 2003, the federal government and the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans decided that West Coast Halibut would be harvested under a quota system. Twelve per cent was allocated for recreational fishing, and 88 per cent was allocated for commercial fishing. The coalition has said

all along that that division won’t work because the allowed catch fluctuates up and down. “We told [the government] when the numbers drop we are going to have trouble fishing, because we’re going to catch more than the allocated amount,” said Brent McCallum, one of the organizers of the town hall meeting. He said that the recreational halibut fishing was

supposed to open this year on Feb. 1, but it has not opened yet. A notice on the Fisheries website said the season will open Feb. 28. The coalition has also been told that the season could close as early as mid-July, when it usually doesn’t close until Dec. 31. For information, check out www.bchalibut.org.

Fight for federal seat gears up

Health care and crime are concerns for wouldbe NDP candidates.

Prospective federal NDP candidates Elizabeth Rosenau and Craig Speirs met with citizens at the Mission Library this weekend. Dealing with the causes of crime, such as treating addictions and mental health issues came up as a focus for both candidates. Both candidates also see a need to support and restore public health care. Rosenau is concerned that the Canada health act is due to expire in 2014 and she does not trust the

thinking of going across the border for medical treatments it is the politicians in Ottawa who forced that choice.

Speirs is a four-term Maple Ridge councillor. Rosenau, also a Maple Ridge resident and pharmacist, has become more politically active after her daughter was allegedly shot with rubber bullets protesting at the G20 summit last summer [See story page A1]. There will be another meeting with Rosenau and Speirs this coming Sunday at the Maple Ridge Library from 2 to 4 p.m. New Democrats will select their candidate at a nomination meeting on March 6. Jail pushed for unlicenced driver, 88 by Keith Fraser Postmedia Network Inc

Crown is seeking a jail term for an 88-year-old visually impaired man whose dangerous driving killed a Pitt Meadows man two years ago. In November, Melle Grietinus Pool pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of flagger Terry Mitchell, 52. Pool, an Abbotsford father of seven and a retired dairy farmer, was 87 years old and had no driver’s licence when he got behind the wheel of his truck on Feb. 25, 2008. As he was driving along River Road near Fort Langley at about 30

km/h, he struck and killed Mitchell. Prosecutor Don Wilson told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine Bruce that Pool, who was deemed unfit to drive by his doctors and did not renew his licence when it expired in 2001, regularly drove. “He’d come to a misapprehension that somehow he was able to do this. He was a ticking time bomb,” Wilson said. Despite the fact Pool was an otherwise law-abiding citizen, Wilson said he deserves to be jailed. “If you commit a crime like this, you should go to jail. As difficult as it is to say about an 88-year-old man, it has to be said.”

LEGION EVENTS Always the lowest prices in town!

Wilson did not say how long a jail term was warranted, but cited case law ranging up to 18 months. If sent to jail, Pool would be one of the oldest offenders in Canada. Mitchell’s widow, Alison Stacey, read a victim impact statement, saying she was still struggling with the devastating loss of her “husband, lover, partner.” Defence lawyer Jeffrey Campbell called for a probationary period rather than jail, noting there is no geriatric unit in provincial jails and, as an elderly person, he would be vulnerable and require segregation. The judge is expected to sentence Pool on March 3.

Kids, and especially preteens began gravitating to Pitt Meadows Museum almost two years ago. Hunting for something to do, the youngsters seemed pleasantly surprised to discover how interesting the former the Struthers’ home, turned museum, was with all its old artifacts, interactive programs, and nice people, explained assistant curator Jennifer Chernecki. But admittedly, most of the museum’s programming of the day were aimed at older kids and adults. It was Chernecki’s artistic

bent and a desire to mentor other young people in the wonders of history that led to the advent of the Museum Sundays programs. Almost a year and a half in, Chernecki said she’s pleased to see anywhere from four to 10 children a week show up. “A lot of kids come here interested in art,” she said. And while some of the weekend events focus on art projects, others focus on needs around the museum, she explained. If apples are falling from the tree, then the kids gather them up and use them to bake or do crafts. If it’s spring, then the kids get a crash course on gardening.

This Sunday, Feb. 20, in celebration of heritage week, the museum is hosting DressUp and Cheese. “We’ll put on our historical costumes, view a Harris Road slide show and pose for antique parlour-style sepia-toned photographs,” Cherenecki said. The Museum Sundays program runs 2 to 4 p.m. every Sunday, October to May. The programs are designed for children, but parents and grandparents with varying skill levels are also welcome. The museum is located at 12947 Harris Rd. For more, call 604-465-4322, or visit www.pittmeadowsmuseum. com.

Our View

Justice deals hard cases too lightly “This isn’t a court of justice, son. This is a court of law,” Billy Bragg nearly famously sang in “Rotting on Remand.” The English punk-folk singer was referring to innocent people being held in jail before trial, although the notion you don’t get justice in a law court is normally claimed nowadays by crime victims upset by the light sentences given to criminals. But there’s another group that is hurt when the courts deliver law instead of justice, and that is the group that comprises all the rest of us. Take the case of Chad Allen Stewart, who has managed to rack up 50 convictions in his 28 years on earth. Unless Stewart is the world’s most unlucky, atypical hoodlum, that means he’s committed hundreds of crimes in his life, the vast bulk of which never resulted in charges, let alone convictions. Stewart is now before the courts to be sentenced for using a large knife to rob a Maple Ridge restaurant in 2009 not long after he was released from prison for one of his previous robberies that he was caught at. At his sentencing hearing this week, the career crook claimed he was a changed man, and that going to prison was “getting old.” That’s not an uncommon claim to make, for people in his shoes. The Crown is asking the court to give Stewart six to eight years in prison, although the thug will get four years knocked off, thanks to the two-for-one credit he gets for the time he’s been in remand. Prosecutor Peter Ng is no doubt quoting the law in calling for such a weak sentence. But if we had justice in Canada, Stewart would be declared an incorrigible, lifelong, repeat dangerous offender, and he would be given an indefinite sentence. With 50 previous convictions, why should we risk anything less?

Albion Flats

Council made ‘right’ decision Dear editor,

I wanted to take this opportunity, on behalf of Residents for Smart Shopping (RSS), to thank those members of council who voted in favour of moving forward with a comprehensive development plan for the Albion Flats at last week’s council meeting. By doing so, Councillors Cheryl Ashlie, Judy Dueck, Al Hogarth, and Michael Morden have demonstrated that they not only listen to the needs of Maple Ridge residents, but that they are also committed to bringing much needed shopping options to our community. As my fellow members and I have advocated throughout this ongoing planning process, it would not be in the best interest of our community to consider development only southeast of 105th Avenue. We need to diversify our tax basis, we

need to revitalize under-utilized land, and most importantly, we need to stop driving outside of this community to do our daily shopping. Thank you again to the mayor and those four councillors for your ongoing commitment and dedication in creating a well-developed, comprehensive land use plan for the Albion Flats. You have the support of your community in helping to shape the future of Maple Ridge. We, as Maple Ridge residents, will continue to do our part to stay engaged in the process and show our commitment to the Albion Flats. We look forward to the months ahead and the refinement of a concept plan to bring forward to the Agricultural Land Commission.

Leslie Sofarelli, Residents for Smart Shopping

Encouraging democracy right on Dear editor,

I really enjoyed your editorial piece, [Voting a piece of democracy, Feb. 8 Opinion, TIMES]. Your encouraging comments on all of us taking part in our democratic process are right on. This year, 2011 – which I’ve coined the year of politics – is so important for

the citizens to have their voices heard. Whether it is at the polls, or just in our communities or workplaces, engaging in healthy debate or discussion on how we would like to see our society run is vital to our democratic process and a healthy society. Just look at the

Taxation

Business owners deserve their wealth Dear editor,

Re: Corporate tax cuts are a misplaced priority. Why does CAW National President Ken Lewenza constantly nip at the heels and try to bite the hands that feed his members, and from which he partakes as well? Why shouldn’t the heads of businesses “amass wealth?” After all, it’s their entrepreneurship, industriousness, innovation, and investment that provide employment and benefits. Could it be jealousy in that Lewenza has none of these attributes and can only criticize those who do possess them? Businesses all start the same way, with a lot of stress and hard work. Owners should enjoy the fruit of their labours while giving everyone else a job.

Egyptian citizens for one, and what they are willing to sacrifice to gain freedom and democracy that we take for granted. I understand how some of us can become a little jaded or cynical over time, especially with certain politicians lying and deceiving us. But, don’t let the few bad apple politicians steal away your faith in our system of democracy. Rise up, take a stand, and make them listen to what you want for our families and society. And, remember our loved ones who went over and fought in the Second World War, sacrificing their lives to secure us this precious freedom to vote. Please don’t let their bravery and valiant efforts go in vain. Get out there and have your voices heard loud and clear. The participation of all of us does matter, and is what makes for our great and democratic country called Canada. Get out there and make the difference. John McKenzie, Maple Ridge

Homeless

tolls Mental illness costs Bridge inaccurate Dear editor,

I was shocked to hear that people who are homeless need $55,000, according to Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. I’m a mentally ill person who is given $906.04 a month for rent, food, and clothing. That means I receive a “grand” total of $11,000 yearly. If the mentally ill were diagnosed early, there would be far less homelessness. There would also be fewer drug seekers and users because a fair number of the mentally ill seek drugs to lessen their symptoms such as internal voices. I do not believe there should be a double standard in the income between the mentally ill like me and homeless people.

Tony Brand, Maple Ridge

Dear editor,

I have more complaints on the Golden Ears Bridge tolls. All drivers should watch their bills. I drive an SUV. Opening my statements, I see I have been charged the ST class. which I am not, for a charge of $6.20 per trip. I still have to pay the overcharge this month, but I can expect a credit on my next statement, otherwise I will be billed interest.

KATIE’S PLACE SYDNEY is a lively little cat, compact in build, sturdy yet lithe. Our vet said she’s part Siamese. She’s just a tiny bit of a thing, but she’s full of spunk and bravado. This little one is spirited! She’s quite young and full of energy. Sydney’s favourite trick is escaping from her communal room. She’s desperate to get out and explore the world. Can you make her part of yours?!!

ROCKWELL had a sad life and hasn’t known a lot of love. Yet he’s gentle and reaches into caresses. He was homeless, hanging around a neighbourhood but he was not welcome; someone drove him five miles deeper into the country to dump him. Rockwell made his way back to the only area he knew as home and was then brought to us. He needs a forever home where he is wanted and loved.

MAURA was a homeless cat being cared for by a sympathetic person who brought him to us so he could find a home. Maury settled quietly into his nest and calmly watched all the strange goings-on around him with round, alert eyes. He’s showing the lively, chipper nature of a young cat who knows he’s among friends. He needs a patient companion that will give unconditional love and some space just to chill.

KLAIRE came to us when she was unable to get the care she needed where she’d been living. She’s a tender-hearted, friendly little cat. Give this pretty little cat a chance to settle in and become part of your family and you’ll have an endearing and devoted best friend for life.

Ridge coach reaches milestone

Maple Ridge Secondary basketball coach Don Herman celebrated his 1,000th win last Thursday.

Coach Don Herman with the senior girls team who got him the landmark win.

ajudd@mrtimes.com

Reaching the one thousandth anything is a big achievement, and attention should be paid, but for Don Herman he would rather the moment pass by in a whisper and not a fanfare. The 30 year coaching veteran, who started his career in the small town of Dawson Creek, chalked up his 1,000th win last week when his Ramblers beat Coquitlam’s Pinetree Timberwolves 82-21. But as he put it, “the girls win.” Herman would rather all the focus be on the girls and their hard work, but Thursday night was his night, when some MRSS staff members attended the game and gave him the game ball signed by all his players. “It was very embarrassing to say the least,” he laughed. “It’s nice to keep the focus on the girls.” Herman keeps track of every game he has coached, but he didn’t know that he was approaching one thousand wins until he had to dig out some information for a brochure on coaching put out

by Basketball B.C. Then he let the cat out of the bag when he mentioned to some of the Ramblers that he was going to retire when he reached 1,000 wins. “Just to bug them,” he said. From there, the news spread and Herman had no idea he was going to be the centre of attention last Thursday. “It wasn’t supposed to be public information,” he said laughing. His fellow staff members and coaches were not going to let it pass by, however, and recognized

his dedication to the sport and the kids. According to them, Herman has also spent about 22 days total just sweeping the gym floors before every game so that his players have a good surface. Despite a long career with many successes, including winning the Provincial Championships in 2007 and never losing a season in 30 seasons, Herman said it is the little moments that he remembers. “All the good memories, you have,” he said, “all the trips.”

“Going to away games where the kids would have their boom box in the van and you can’t hear yourself think,” he laughed. The losses are just as memorable he said, as it helps to refocus the players and himself. For the rest of the season, the Ramblers are going to focus on the playoffs and getting through to the Fraser Valley Championships. Herman said he is also not retiring quite yet. “I’ll hang on until the end of the season,” he joked.

Burrards fill crease with first pick A Coquitlam junior Adanac netminder is now a member of Maple Ridge’s Burrards. by Dan Olson

One who can stop it and one who can bury it. Those were the Maple Ridge Burrards main needs heading into Tuesday’s Western Lacrosse Association’s 2011 Draft, and those were the first big pieces they added. By choosing Coquitlam junior Adanac netminder Chris Seidel with the fourth overall pick, Burrards coach Daren Fridge said the team will be well fortified between the pipes for the upcoming season. With 2010 Leo Nicholson Most Valuable Goaltender winner Ron Schibald already in Maple Ridge colours, some may question why

Ramblers in 2nd The MRSS senior girls basketball team placed second in their league this year. The Ramblers are now off to the Fraser Valley Championships, after placing second in their league, playing important games this past weekend. They took on Centennial on Friday night, and although it was a close game, they managed to just squeeze through with a victory and a final score of 54-48. Their game against Riverside on Saturday afternoon was a difficult one, explained coach Don Herman, as they only had six players, and by the second half, the girls had run out of gas. The game finished with a score of 66-42 for Riverside. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, Click on “Sports”

Flames struggle on weekend The local junior B hockey team broke its winning streak. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

It was a disappointing weekend for the Flames as they were unable to keep up their recent string of wins, and lost to both the Mission Icebreakers, and the Port Moody Black Panthers. On their home ice Friday night, the Flames remained goalless until the end of the third period,

when they finally managed to break through the Icebreakers’ goalie, but it was too late. Flames player Dean Gilmore was named the third star of that game, which had a final score of 4-2. On Saturday night the goals were coming faster and easier for the Flames against the Port Moody Black Panthers, as Danny Brandys got the Flames off to a good start with the first goal at 1:12 in the first period. However, the Panthers had the same strategy and kept up the goals to end

the game with a 9-6 win over the Flames. The Flames start their playoffs next Monday and coach Tavis Eaton said he is confident the team will end the season in third place. “It will come down to who’s playing the best,” he said, about his team’s chances this year. “I think [our chances] are as good as anybody else’s,” said Eaton. Monday the Flames will start round one of the playoffs against the Port Moody Black Panthers, and then they play at home next Wednesday.

January 31, 1943 - February 6, 2011

Coming Events

It is with incredible sadness that we announce the loss of our best friend, daughter, niece, aunt and mom. Sherry, slipped away suddenly on February 6, 2011 at the age of 68 after a courageous and inspirational five month battle at VHG. She showed amazing strength and grace even until her last moment. Sherry was a true Vancouverite, born at VGH in 1943 and growing up in Strathcona, before moving to raise her son Leigh with Rex in Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Predeceased by her father Richard Eng in 1956. Sherry was the glue that bound so many of us together, both family and friends alike and for this we are eternally grateful. She was one of the special ones, a true gem and a profound loss. She was the mother everyone wished to have and the daughter everyone wished they could be. Her love for her mother Anne, Leigh, Leigh’s wife Margaret (and her mother Barbara), Aunt Irene and Uncle Eugene, nieces Vicki and Brenda (and their families) and countless friends and family were unsurpassed. This love will live on in her traditions, recipes, humor, and warmth that she instilled in all of us. Sherry spent over 20 years working for Douglas College and after her retirement, began tutoring English and volunteering at the Maple Ridge SPCA. She has the greenest thumb of all, creating beautiful gardens and recently she began taking piano and cake decorating lessons. Ruby, her new puppy, was to be her faithful companion in the coming years and Ruby misses her mommy dearly. Whether it was organizing last minute dinners at the Flamingo, catching the latest movies, helping Annie with crafts, or her photography, Sherry was always on the go. Forever the hostess, Sherry would be proudest to be remembered for always creating a wonderful home and garden and hosting her loved ones during Christmas and Thanksgiving. Even in our grief Sherry would want us to be comfortable, happy and well fed. She loved her life, her family and we will always cherish her warmth, kindness, friendship, love and generosity. “Don’t cry because I’m gone but smile because I’ve lived”. We love you, we miss you and we look forward to seeing you again. Relax now Sherry, you are in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to the Maple Ridge SPCA. Memorial Service was held on Saturday, Feb. 12th, 2011 at 2pm at First Memorial Funeral Home, 602 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC.

SUDOKU Fun By The Numbers

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
