The chance to watch a Canucks game from a private suite, with food, drinks, and an Olympic gold medalist thrown in for good measure, would be enough to excite anyone. But for the Wright family, the chance to see the joy in their 10-year-old son Casey’s eyes, made the evening even more special. “It was fantastic,” said father Larry Wright. Casey, who attends Maple Ridge Elementary, was diagnosed at only six months old with a cancerous brain tumor. Next month will be the tenth anniversary of that diagnosis, and although the tumor is now dormant, he has to have MRIs every six months to monitor it. Larry Wright, who is a photographer
for the TIMES’ sister paper, The Burnaby NOW, met a woman named Rhonda Gebara last October, who, along with boyfriend Mike Shamro, heard about Casey’s story. It touched their hearts. As a treat, they arranged for Casey and his whole family to have a tour of Teck’s Highland Valley Copper mine in Logan Lake. But the story doesn’t end there. Brenda Longland, community and public relations manager for Metropolis at Metrotown, heard about what Gebara and Shamro had done, and wanted to plan a reunion at a Canucks game. Metropolis has a “hot-seat-suite” for contest winners, and sometimes they use it for members of the community. “We wanted to have it as an opportunity to invite people in the community to have a great night off,” said Longland. The story of the Wrights and the mine was the perfect occasion to use the suite. “It really touched my heart,” Longland said. “Not only about the Wright family, but also recognizing what Rhonda and Mike did.” For the Wrights, Thursday night was a

Site prep kicks off on casino Great Canadian will bring forward proposal in spring. Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com
The empty lot at the end of 227th Street on Lougheed Highway is full of trucks, heavy construction equipment, cement blocks, and a port-a-potty. Site preparation has begun on the lot that is planned for a casino across the street from Valley Fair Mall, as Great Canadian Casinos prepares the ground for a future gaming facility and a road that will connect the highway to the Haney Bypass. Howard Blank, vice-president of media and
entertainment with the Great Canadian Casino Corp., said the company plans to bring a proposal to the District of Maple Ridge this spring for what they want to do with the site. In 2008, the company proposed a 22,000square-foot facility at 22696 Lougheed Highway with a bingo hall, slot machines, off-track horse race betting, a restaurant and bar, a conference room and a 303-stall parking structure. Maple Ridge council gave third reading to the casino in July 2008, but the economic downturn postposed its construction. At the time council approved the casino development, some councillors expressed concern about gambling and effects on families. During the debate, Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin, who was then a councillor, said the question for him was “are social costs out-
weighed by community benefits?” Daykin said then that he appreciated that gaming brings a lot of revenue into the community but he said he also has firsthand experience with people with gambling addictions. In the meantime, the Haney Bingo Plex, also owned by Great Canadian Casinos, has been expanded to include slot machines and horserace betting. The original plan was for Great Canadian Casino Corporation to build a 22,000-squarefoot facility at 22696 Lougheed Highway. It would include a 500-seat bingo hall, 150 slot machines, off-track horse race betting, a 150seat restaurant and bar, a banquet, and conference room and a 303-stall parking structure. The company will be required to complete the 227 Street extension to the Haney Bypass.
Whonnock Lake
Stranded dog sparks rescue on ice
Emergency crews were called to east Maple Ridge Saturday. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Due to the abnormally cold weather that hit the Lower Mainland lately, a thin cover of ice formed on Whonnock Lake. On Saturday afternoon, a rather inquisitive black Labrador retriever had ventured out on the lake. But due to its weight, had fallen through the ice, and into the very cold water below. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, but before they even arrived, they got word that someone had gone out to try and rescue the dog and had also fallen in. “We then heard that someone
was in a tree 40 feet out in the lake,” said Maple Ridge assistant fire chief Howard Exner, adding that the information was very confusing when it was first received. Hall two in east Maple Ridge sent one truck to Whonnock Lake park, said Exner, but when they arrived they found nothing, and it was then that the department discovered they had to attend to residences on the north side of the lake. “One of the callers came out and met us on Dewdney,” he said. When the trucks arrived, they found the dog and its owner standing on a frozen marsh land out in the lake, along with two kayaks stuck in the ice, with one person still in the kayak. Exner explained that the dog fell through the ice, then two people went and retrieved their kayaks

In memoriam
Hundreds pack church
A service for Charlene Reaveley was held on Saturday at the Haney Presbyterian Church in Maple Ridge.
Charlene Reaveley, whose husband Dan works at Maple Ridge Chrysler, was remembered on Saturday as a loving wife and mother who always put others first. The 30-year-old Port Coquitlam woman was one of two people killed in a hit-and-run crash last week at the side of the Lougheed Highway. The crash also claimed the life of 26-yearold Port Coquitlam woman Lorraine Cruz. Hundreds of people attended the memorial service for Reaveley, packing two rooms of the local Haney Presbyterian Church to say goodbye to an “inspiring” and “vibrant” woman, whose roadside act of kindness was in keeping with her character. In a moving tribute, Reaveley’s father spoke to his four grandkids – Kaeden, Rebecca, Alicia and Tristan – telling a story about an angel who was sent to earth for a short time. “Last week, they took her back,” he said through tears. “And that’s what I have to keep in my mind. She went back . . . She did what she was meant to do.”
Husband, Dan, whom Reaveley met in high school, sat in front of his wife’s casket, surrounded by their kids. He did not speak during the service, but his sister talked about the couple’s strong relationship. Although they married young, they were certain of their love for each other, she said. “Charlene was the sister I never had,” she added. Reaveley’s mother remembered her “best friend” – a little girl who once went to a school Halloween party in a cardboard box decorated like an Oxo soup cube and eventually became a wife and mother of four kids. “She had such a great attitude,” she said, recalling Reaveley’s school days participating in sports like ringette, softball, and dance. She remembered her feelings when Reaveley told her she was expecting her first child. “She loved motherhood.” “You are a shining example of how important it is for all of us to make time for our friends, tell our loved ones we love them often, and not sweat the small things in life,” said one tribute. The hit-and-run crash happened Feb. 19 as Cruz and her boyfriend, Paulo Calimahin, were driving down the highway and ran into a barricade. They got out of their car and were uninjured. Reaveley and

Scam
Packed with no place to go
A local mother and her daughters are homeless. by Maria Rantanen
mrantanen@mrtimes.com
A Nigerian fraudster was able to take advantage of a Maple Ridge mother wanting to rent a new home. Melissa Carter was looking for a new place for herself and her two daughters. But the $1,500 she paid through Mini-Mart to secure a new rental home is gone, and she has no place to live. Boxes were piled up in her home off 227th Street on Friday afternoon but at that point, she didn’t know where she was going to move for March 1. Over the weekend, she put some stuff in storage and took the rest to charities. She has had to pack up her personal belongings in a backpack and sent her daughters to stay with her sister. “It’s been a bad week,” she told The TIMES. Carter has just been diagnosed with lupus, and is struggling to bring up her two daughters, ages 13 and 10. “I kind of got dumped on really bad at once,” Carter said.

Melissa Carter (right) and her daughter Samantha packed possessions into boxes, but have no place to go after being defrauded of a rental deposit. She saw an ad for a house for rent and went to the open house, but at that point never met the owners. Checking back on the place, she saw it was being offered for $1,000 a month, which would have been an affordable rent for a much larger place than where she was currently living. Carter had been scrimping and saving for a month and got a bit of help from friends to save up the $1,500. She is on income assistance, so doesn’t have much savings. When she saw the price tag on this home, she was ecstatic. “I thought everything was absolutely wonderful,” Carter said.
She has been paying rent through Mini-Mart for her current place with no issues, so paying a security deposit for the new place didn’t seem far-fetched. When Carter was packing and preparing to move, she googled the address to see what information there was on it. She was shocked to see it was still for rent and for double the price. She called the number, and the landlady had never received the money and was almost as upset as Carter that her home had been used in this fraud. Losing the money “sucks,” Carter said, but the bigger issue is not having a decent home for her children.

Grad devotes life to others
Maple Ridge resident Meghan Hume said becoming a recreational therapist is rewarding.
“It is so important to be able to offer patients a break from the craziness, and support them in re-establishing goals for leisure and participation in their community.”
by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
With all the hustle and bustle of clinics and hospitals, it can be easy for patients to become overwhelmed and concerned about what the future may hold. And, that is where newly appointed recreational therapist Meghan Hume comes in. The 26-year-old Maple Ridge resident is working as a recreational therapist at Surrey Memorial Hospital. And, although she has only been in the post for two months, she’s found her calling. “The best part of my day is building relationships with patients and members of my team,” Hume said. “It is so important to be able to offer patients a break from the craziness, and support them in re-establishing goals for leisure and participation in their community.” Not only has Hume stepped into a job before graduating on Feb. 8, she was also valedictorian of her class. “I was thrilled to be able to share my experiences and commonalities of the ups and downs of life as a student with my peers,” she said. “I was also proud to represent my program of recreation therapy.” Hume said her mom and dad are her role models, and her mom was inspiration for a rewarding career. “Together they have taught me balance, reminded me to not sweat the small stuff, and to always follow my dreams,” she said. develops and plans therapy programs for people with disabilities or special needs, and helps them achieve a higher quality of life and health. “In my position at Surrey Memorial, I work with adults of all ages and abilities,” said Hume. “As well as working at the hospital, I also work with older adults in longterm care facilities.” “Meghan approaches life from a cup-half-full perspective,” said Tricia Rachfall, Douglas College recreational therapy program coordinator. “She has this incredible ability to see the good that can come out of a situation even when at the moment it looks like nothing turned out right,” she added. Hume, who attended high school in Campbell River, said Douglas was an ideal learning environment for her because of the small class sizes and the ability to know her instructors and peers. “I hope to continue to practise balance in life by challenging myself at work and making time to play,” she said. “I am excited and hopeful to see the field of recreation therapy grow, and I hope to support many individuals regain their optimal quality of life, health and wellness.”

phone and called the RCMP. That quick thinking, along with the actions of paramedics and RCMP Const. Ryan Henley is what police say ultimately saved the woman’s life. Henley had to force entry into the home, where they found the woman in what the police called “distress.” She was taken to hospital for treatment, and is expected to recover. “If the man failed to contact emergency services, and Const. Henley did not take the appropriate action, this case could have had a very different outcome,” said Dunlop. “Certainly everyone involved did great in saving this woman’s life.”
When a break and enter occurred at the ABC restaurant on Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge on Nov. 30, 2005, the thief cut himself on a broken glass window. Our View
Real job for new premier No one expected the provincial budget to be inspired. The “makebelieve” budget, as some pundits dubbed it, had much to do with legal requirements and little to do with where B.C. is headed in the future. It leaves B.C.’s new premier, Christy Clark, with some hard catch-up work to do. What wasn’t in the budget was as notable as anything actually in it. There were no spending increases for many public services – something that meshes well with Clark’s past record as a former cabinet minister. The budget also leaves more than half of the ministries in line for cuts. Another item not in the budget: any hints of what could happen if the hated HST is turned down, whether in a provincial referendum or through a vote in the Legislature (both were variously promised by Clark). Financial desperation is what prompted the provincial money grab in the first place. That situation hasn’t changed – except much of the federal “transition” money has already been spent, and there’s little Clark will be able to do about that. Any HST payback remains the elephant in the room. And could anyone take a budget seriously that didn’t delve into potential HST outcomes? That’s another factor Clark will have to address, and better sooner than later. What is in the budget includes a high level of debt, much of it associated with capital projects brought on in the name of economic stimulation. Most notable, however, is about $2.5 billion in “wiggle room” or “flexible funding” for the new Liberal leader to allocate over the next three years. That amounts to a significant slush fund for Clark. Of course that “holding” budget may yet turn out to share features of past February budgets which later proved light on fiscal reality, and were revised into wholly new “updates” only six months later. The budget’s realism is now Clark’s concern. Along with our congratulations, we wish her well with the immense task that she has accepted.

Albion Flats
Now we need results Dear editor,
I have followed the ongoing controversy about the Albion Flats for so long, I feel I will expire before any progress is made regarding shopping, housing, or anything at all in that area. Houses, many houses, have been built far and wide, but without thought to amenities required for all the people who
Non-profits
Save ‘Bigs’ Dear editor,
I wish to appeal to our local MLAs and MP to act on behalf of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters who are losing their matches with their “Littles.” I am taking a personal interest in this, as my 23-year-old daughter has been a Big Sister to a teenage girl for the past two years. During this time, I have seen this young lady blossom. It is completely unacceptable that my daughter is sent the following email with no warning and essentially told that it is the end of her relationship. “To all parents, children and mentors involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, I need to let you know of a few things that have occurred the last couple of days. “It has been decided that due to restructuring of the organization, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows office will be closed effective March 14, 2011. “This will also result in the majority of matches being closed between now and then. I would appreciate if you could call me over the next few days so we may speak in person. I do not like sending this information through emails, however it is preferable to you hearing it through the media first. “If you have concerns or questions, I would ask that you direct them to David at the Abbotsford office. If he not available, Shirley can be contacted in his place. Ph. 604-852-3331 their emails are: david.sheach@bigbrothersbigsisters.ce and Shirley.wilson@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca. “Due to this fact, for most of you this will be your last opportunity to take part in a match event, which is the skiing on Feb. 27.” My daughter has spent countless hours and many dollars out of her own pocket during her time with her “Little.” And if this is, in fact, a case of funding then I would like to know exactly where that money has been going. Also would you please tell me why just the Maple Ridge office is being closed? Are these children any less important than those in the other jurisdictions? Why is it not possible for these children to fall under the umbrella of another jurisdiction? It appears that there is more than meets the eye here and 26 children and their mentors are the ones who are paying the price. My daughter will carry on her mentorship without guidance from the province, without funding from the province, and with all the love and care she has given over the past two years – out of the goodness of her heart. Cindy Dale, Maple Ridge

live in those areas, so far from any shops or schools, and from limited public transport. I am tired of hearing about Councillors Craig Speirs and Linda King appearing to represent the opinion of the majority of people in this area. This is totally false; no one I have ever spoken to has any time for either of these two councillors. They, in fact, portray them as stopping all development in this region, regardless of the fact that so many people have to drive elsewhere to work or to shop. I spend most of my after-tax dollars outside of Maple Ridge. Not by choice, but because I have no choice in Maple Ridge – compliments of said Speirs and King. We have choices in the towns and cities all around us, and we as a community spend our money where we get the best value. If Maple Ridge continues to withhold progress, it will continually encourage all the taxpayers to travel elsewhere to spend their money. If we are a “green community” why are we exporting our working population far and wide to jobs other municipalities have? The cost of gas alone and the pollution the cars add to the atmosphere is not beneficial to anyone. We need shopping and jobs here, tomorrow, not in 10 years time – after another study. Progress seems to be happening at last, now we need results.
Joan Carr, Maple Ridge
Politics
Feds must find housing options Dear editor,
Having attended the municipal council’s workshop recently, and hearing our MP Randy Kamp say that the federal government isn’t going to have any affordable housing initiative, I was totally outraged. Every municipality has brought forward this issue of the need for some kind of affordable housing program from the feds. Yet, they continue to ignore what is a crisis situation on our cities. We have homeless people on our streets, plus many people’s rents are being raised to the point where they too will be out on the street. This is a disgrace with a country as rich as Canada. And then, they want to give a tax break to the richest in our society – the corporate elites (these same corporate CEOs, some of whom are making millions, while the rest of us are struggling to survive and pay our rents). The citizens must wake up and fight these deplorable policies of the right-wing politicians. The Conservative government must be held accountable for this in the upcoming election. The poor and working people must get out there and vote for a government that cares about all of its citizens – not just the rich. Make your voices heard loud and clear at the ballot box. We must struggle to “Defend Real Democracy,” not the sham that the Conservatives are putting forward. Rise up and take a stand against this injustice!
John McKenzie, Maple Ridge
[Editor’s note: McKenzie has declared his intentions to run for Maple Ridge council during the November election.]

Wrestlers battle on B.C. mats While it was not the result hoped for at the provincial high school wrestling championships, there were many lessons learned by the MRSS athletes. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
Maple Ridge Secondary School wrestling coach Bill McCrae wanted his wrestlers to place higher at the championships in Abbotsford last Friday and Saturday. But the 21-year coaching veteran is still proud of his team’s efforts. Each one of his students will be able to come back next year, as the oldest are only in Grade 11 this year, and a few current Grade 7s will be moving up to join his squad in September. “On the positive side we’ll essentially have the same group of athletes next year,” said McCrae, “bolstered by a couple of ringer Grade 7s who will attend Ridge next year.” The current nine-perJean Konda-Witte/Postmedia Network Inc. son squad managed to Candice Owen, (in blue), wrestled with Jennifer Sakelariou of Port Moody in the 57 kg class. place three people in the top six at the B.C. Girls lack presence
A local junior B team won both of its weekend games against the Black Panthers.
The Maple Ridge Ramblers senior girls have qualified for the provincial championships. Coach Don Herman said that while he is proud of his seniors for securing a place in the tournament, he said the girls need to up their practice habits. The girls faced number one team WJ Mouat on Friday, and then Riverside on Saturday, and Herman said the team played as if the season could already be over. However, they still have the chance to focus and come back. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”
Flames close to round-one victory by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com
The Ridge Meadows Flames had a very good weekend, with two back-to-back wins against the Port Moody Black Panthers, to make this their third win in a row. The Flames faced the Panthers
for game five on Monday night. “The fourth one, it’s always the toughest game to get,” said Tavis Eaton, head Flames coach. On Friday night, hometown fans were treated to a 6-4 win, with goals being scored by Danny Brandys, Dustin Cervo, Shane Harle, and Ryan Stewart. Brandys managed a hat-trick during the game, scoring one goal in each period. He was awarded the first star for his goal-scoring efforts. The team’s momentum did not

slow down on Saturday, as they won with six goals again, to the Panther’s two. Brandys was once again rewarded with the first star of the game designation. “They know what’s at stake and they worked hard,” said Eaton. The Flames have only lost game one so far, and Eaton said they should have been able to win that one. “I don’t think Port Moody beat us,” he said. “I think we beat ourselves.”
He acknowledged that the Panthers are a good team, and the Flames are being challenged every step of the way. “They’ve got lots of skill, speed,” he said. “It helps that they’re so well coached.” The Flames could now be looking at the second round of playoffs or be facing a few more games before they can move on and face a new opponent. “I think the guys are all working hard,” said Eaton. “And they’re playing the way I know they can.”
