Flying the coop A store in the Haney Place Mall has gone to the birds – in a good way. by Troy Landreville

Visit the Haney Marketplace & Antique Mall and you’ll hear the unmistakable sounds of chirping, tweeting, and squawking emanating from the back of the store. For years, the store (soon to be replaced by Thrifty Foods) attached to Haney Place Mall has become a refuge for orphaned and unwanted birds including zebra finches, canaries, budgies, cockatiels, ring-neck doves, and the most MORE famous resident, an African PHOTOS grey parrot named Whiskey. ONLINE Assistant manager Joie Pare said Whiskey has become somewhat of a celebrity to store visitors. Whiskey found a home at the store a few years back after he got into some hot water with his previous keeper’s landlord, who didn’t appreciate the bird’s foul language at the time. Whiskey loves visitors but don’t tease, pat, or feed him, as he might bite. He especially loves children and seniors but doesn’t share the same kind of affection for certain teenagers, who have been known to come into the store to harass him.

Federal election

Speirs picked to run for New Democrats Environment and human rights were themes at Sunday’s NDP meeting. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Maria Rantanen/TIMES

Craig Speirs was elected Sunday to represent the New Democrats heading into the next federal election, beating out candidate hopeful Elizabeth Rosenau.

Maple Ridge Councillor Craig Speirs was chosen as the local federal NDP candidate on Sunday afternoon. With the possibility of a May election, the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission NDP riding association held its nomination meeting, and challenging Speirs to run was local pharmacist Elizabeth Rosenau. The environment was a prevalent theme at the meeting, along with criticism of MP Randy Kamp and the Harper government. “Locally produced food is becoming more and more important and we need to become more self-sufficient,” Speirs said. “Peak oil and peak water are real and will

challenge our society in a very basic way. We all need to to eat and drink.” During a question-and-answer session with the audience, Speirs said that “oil is a bit of a dinosaur.” He said government should be looking for alternative energy, saying he preferred a “run of roof” energy option, that is, solar power. Rosenau’s daughter Natalie Gray is suing the Toronto police with allegations she was mistreated at last summer’s G20 summit. Her daughter’s experience propelled Rosenau to become more politically active. “At first, it didn’t seem possible that this happened in the Canada I knew, the one that was a world leader in civil rights,” Rosenau told the NDP crowd before the election. “Now that I understand it’s entirely possible, my complacency is gone for good,”

she elaborated. Speirs’ criticism of the federal minority government included the scandal involving Bev Oda, the Conservatives’ campaign finance troubles, and the fact that Harper has prorogued government twice. “We have the federal Conservatives taking Canada in an increasingly undemocratic direction, openly contemptuous of its role in a minority government,” Speirs said. NDP party organizers said the turnout at the meeting was good with more than a hundred people in attendance including current provincial MLA Michael Sather, former MLA Bill Hartley, and Mike Bocking who has run both provincially and federally for the NDP. Speirs said Rosenau was a strong challenger and brought a level of interest to the meeting.

A year ago, Amy MacDonald had problems getting out of bed. At 14, her legs were weak, she was fatigued, she had daily migraines, insomnia and it was getting increasingly difficult to focus at school. Both her schoolwork and her quality of life were suffering. The dancer, who is now 15, is doing a lot better – but that’s after it was discovered there was an electrical transformer under her bed. Amy was diagnosed with electrohypersensitivity (EHS) by a naturopathic doctor. It’s a condition recognized in Europe but not in Canada, that is thought to be caused by wireless routers that emit radio-frequency radiation. After making their home safe, the family has reduced the times Amy is in school so she can avoid wireless as much as possible. But it’s not just EHS kids who are vulnerable, said Amy’s mother Val, it’s all students. “It’s like we’re all guinea pigs in an experiment,” Mom said. Because children are still growing and developing and their cells are dividing, they are particularly vulnerable she added. A community forum about wireless technology, hosted by Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Michael Sather, will be held on Wednesday evening. “We get used to technology,” Val said. “No one wants to get it taken away from them.” The MacDonald family had renovations to their kitchen done two years ago. It included installing new light fixtures, after which Amy started experiencing EHS symptoms. “I would always be really, really tired and I didn’t know why,” Amy said. They went to see Marc Boutet, a naturopathic doctor who diagnosed her with electrohypersensitivity. The doctor sent the family home with a body voltage meter. In Amy’s bedroom, the meter showed her numbers to be extremely high. A consultant discovered the transformer right under her bed. After the transformer was

removed in the summer of 2010, Amy started feeling better. But when she went back to school in the fall, her symptoms started coming back. That’s when they made the connection between the wireless router at school and Amy’s health. Amy is taking three classes outside of school, both online and through home-schooling, which ends up being a lot more work than if she did them at school. Being away from school is not fun for Amy. She misses her friends and finds it awkward to explain her condition and why she has to be

away so much. Board chair Ken Clarkson said he doesn’t know much about the issue. Since the delegation presented to the board of education, the board hasn’t had time to meet and discuss the issue, he said. “I think generally that issue is with Health Canada,” he said. “It’s not a school board issue.” Health Canada states that there is “no convincing scientific evidence” that wireless networks with low levels of radio frequency radiation are dangerous.

Board of education

District floats two-week spring break Trustees will consider reducing school year by six days. by Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

A two-week spring break and common bell schedule for elementary schools are being proposed for SD42.

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows board of education will consider adding six non-instructional days to the calendar on Wednesday – an extra week at spring break and a four-day weekend at Remembrance Day – and having all schools start and end at the same time. District staff estimate they would save about $200,000 by changing the calendar.

The proposed changes would increase the school day for elementary students by nine and half minutes, and for high school students, by 10.5 minutes. The changes wouldn’t affect Kanaka Creek Elementary. The report states that changing the calendar won’t have any detrimental effect on learning. The school calendar has to be

set by May 31, after parents and employees have been consulted. If the board of education accepts the staff recommendation, an online survey will be posted on March 10, parents will receive information, a community forum will be held on March 29, and the proposal would come back to the board on April 13 for more public input.

Teen crashes into house

An upset young man took a family dispute one step further on Monday.

High school students emerged from class Monday afternoon only to discover a house across the street had been hit. A 19-year-old crashed a car into the family garage at 22010 122nd Ave., across from Maple Ridge Secondary, and damaged the house, the car, a parked motorcycle, and himself. At about 12:20 p.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP were called out for a family dispute where the suspect left the house in an older car. One member of the RCMP Lower Mainland District’s Police Dog Services

was able to find the car, and tried to get the driver to stop, but he wouldn’t, said RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. Due to the car being driven in an often “erratic manner,” the police were forced to abandon any type of pursuit, she said. “We’re in the beginning phases of the investigation, but suffice to say we were able to monitor the man’s driving, maintaining a safe distance,” Dunlop added. At 12:35 p.m., the young man returned to his home and drove straight into the closed garage door. “We’re quite thankful that no one was injured in this incident,” Dunlop said. The suspect is currently in police custody, and the investigation is continuing.

Weapons

Police are warning about the dangers of converting unregulated starter’s pistols into deadly guns. by Amy Judd ajudd@mrtimes.com

Maple Ridge is just one of four locations where converted weapons have been seized in the past few months. The local firearm was found during a raid in late December, when a number of guns and drugs were seized by the Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit from a home during a

search warrant execution under the controlled drug and substance act. Local police said the replica had been bored out and could be used as an actual firearm. They stressed that danger lies in the fact that they converts a non-firearm to a firearm, but these weapons is uncommon in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. New Westminster police raided Westley Military Surplus on Front Street on Feb. 25 as part of a five-month investigation dubbed “E-Penury,” and as a result found that the store was a source of illegal ammunition.

Law must limit mega-homes

Metro Vancouver directors urge the ALC to halt construction of large houses on farmland.

by Maria Rantanen and Kelly Sinoski Postmedia Network Inc.

Large homes are proliferating in Pitt Meadows’ farming areas and the mayor, backed by Metro Vancouver, wants provincial help to limit their size. Metro Vancouver wants the B.C. government to take more responsibility for the region’s agricultural land by restricting the size and location of mega-houses being built on prime farmland. Metro Vancouver’s agriculture committee on Thursday asked staff to beef up a draft report aimed at limiting mega-homes in the Agricultural Land Reserve in an attempt to protect the land for food production. Pitt Meadows Mayor and Metro Vancouver director Don MacLean said committee members would like to see the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) – rather than individual municipalities – dictate the size and location of any homes being built on the properties. Currently, the ALC Act regulates issues such as soil deposits, subdiv-

First celebrated as an international event on March 19, 1911, International Working Women’s Day had been proposed nearly a year earlier, at an international women’s conference in Denmark, as a day to fight for the rights of women in the workplace and on the political stage. At the time, few women around the world had the right to hold public office, or even to vote in democratic elections. A century later, we can look at the unquestioning progress towards gender equality in progressive countries like Canada, the United States, most of Europe, and elsewhere. And yet, on a truly international level, there are still millions of women in dozens of countries who have no more rights than they did hundreds of years ago. Indeed, in many parts of the world, women still have no right to vote or even to voice their own opinions without fear of reprisal – in some cases physical or even fatal reprisal, if not always sanctioned by law, then often with its tacit approval. Although it is no longer permissible in North America for a man to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb (the infamous “rule of thumb”), violence against women continues. In Canada, a woman is more likely to be murdered by her own spouse than she is to be the fatal victim of a robbery or other non-domestic criminal incident. Despite the achievements towards gender equality in this country since 1911, women are still less likely to be accepted in important political positions. Why should it have been such a remarkable aspect of Christy Clark’s victory in the BC Liberal party’s leadership contest that she is a woman? Only one woman before has been entrusted with B.C.’s premiership – for a short time. And employers who mark International Women’s Day today by leaving a rose on their secretary’s desk should consider what else they might do instead, to work towards the gender equality that continues to elude women on this 100th anniversary of their special day. – B.G.

Recall about broken vows Taxation

HST punishes the health-conscious Dear editor,

I write to express my strong disgust at the charging of the HST on natural food supplements. People who make strong efforts to guard their own health by eating well, exercising, and keeping their weight under control should not be required to pay tax on food supplements. I am 90 years of age, I have been using a top-quality brand of food supplements for 32 years, and I am in the best of health. My blood pressure is in the same range as that of a healthy 25-year-old male, (my doctor’s words). I am on no prescription medications, I have 20/20 vision with my glasses, I have marvelous memory recall, I write several stories each week on my computer and share them widely. I have more than 400 articles of my own writings in my data bank on a wide variety of subjects. Until the HST came into effect we rightly paid no tax on food supplements, which was as it should be. I am outraged with the imposition! We never paid food tax with the GST and PST. Now, with the two lumped together, why on earth should we be hit with 12 per cent HST? Politicians, get a grip on your math! As citizens and taxpayers, we pay for all our own nutritional supplements. We thus greatly reduce the pressure on the national health care system, while calling much less on the system itself. To add 12 per cent to the cost of our decision to maintain our own health naturally is an affront to us and ought to be halted immediately. It is counterproductive as far as Health care is concerned. The system has enough glitches without adding another.

Dick Hunt, Maple Ridge

He says the “big” issue with the recall is that the recall legislation was intended to remove an MLA for malfeasance. While in opposition in 1994 however, Gordon Campbell himself stated “I think it’s obvious why people demand this legislation. They are tired of politicians who make promises before an election and do the exact opposite after.” As far as cost, the recall is entirely citizen driven and responsible for their own funding. Though if Randy Hawes wants to talk financial responsibility, I’d like back my portion of the $780,000 the Liberals spent on pro-HST pamphlets they then threw in the garbage and the $240,000 cost of the TV time Gordon Campbell wasted trying to bribe us with an income tax reduction before taking it back upon his resignation. Randy is simply trying to defend his Maple Ridge-Mission Liberal MLA counterpart using misinformation. If Randy Hawes is genuinely concerned about hip operations he should spend more time preventing the shutdown of the Mission hospital and less time writing frivolous (and erroneous) letters.

Development

Mega houses a bad addition Dear editor,

The pictures of a megahouse in the paper [Help crucial to curb sprawl in ALR, Feb. 8, TIMES] is in my neigbourhood. Yes, we don’t like those big houses here, at all, because people build those big houses then find out that this is a lot of work and upkeep, sell, move, and we are stuck with the big house. If our darling mayor would have dealt with this issue in a different way, he would have had all the farmers behind him a few years ago. But, we do not like to be bullied. If he would have asked for our input and advice, it would have been nice. But that was not done, so we told him no.

MLA Dalton is too conservative If you ever wondered why they call B.C. LaLa land consider this. Maple Ridges MLA Marc Dalton was just too Conservative or right wing to run as a Conservative, so what did he do, he became a BC Liberal of course. Or, how about the majority of BC Liberal MLAs who don’t like Christy Clark because she is seen to be a real liberal. Only in BC you say? As far as Christy Clark being a real liberal, I didn’t see her acting much different than the rest of the so-called liberals when she was in a position of power, slashing and cutting social and children’s programs with reckless abandon, and needless to say her and her family were up to their eyeballs in the BC Rail fiasco and subsequent coverup. I suppose one consequence of Mrs. Clark becoming premier will be to see the

Food is the building block of any society, and at CANstruction 2011, it was also literally the building blocks for creative structures. The 1st Pitt Meadows Pathfinders took part in the event on Feb. 25 and 26, which has been running for nine years, and has collected more than a million containers of food for the Vancouver Food Bank so far. “It’s a huge amount of work,” said leader Connie Mair. This is the first time the Pathfinders took part, and they built a structure that was eight feet high, and 10 feet wide. They were not alone in their endeavor however. The team sponsors and donors were Bosa Construction Inc. and Durante Kreuk Ltd. Mair said they had been preparing for a few months, and they had to plan the design, concept, and the quantities of food to order. “The 1st Pitt Meadows Pathfinders helped in all areas of the build,” said Mair. “From shopping for colourful food, designing the team T-shirt and donating their time and skill to help build the structure.” The Pathfinders then teamed up with the above sponsors, who built the structure and designed the sculpture, and they also purchased all the food so the Pathfinders did not have to fundraise. “It was just a really fun event,” said Mair. “It’s all team work.” This year the theme was imagine, and the Pathfinders’ sculpture was titled Imagine if Pigs CAN fly. “It is about imagination with no limitations,” said Mair. “Our colourful food rainbow is created with no end and our little pig dreams of soaring.” “We imagine that everyone can soar and never go hungry,” she added. Local realtors were not only selling homes and making deals last year. They were also finding the time to raise more than $3,000 for the Friends In Need Food Bank and the Salvation Army. A total of $2,483.39 came from the realtors’ annual golf tournament, with $173 from a local division function, and $434.50 from their annual Christmas party. Last October, about 125 volunteers from the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows realtors’ chapter, including their friends and family, prepared and served 525 Thanksgiving dinners during the 14th annual Real Thanksgiving Meal at St. Patrick’s Church.

Gardening

March beneficial for abundant moisture and warming temperatures

Time is ripe for cleanup of gardens in preparation for spring.

After months of heavy rain with intervals of freezing weather, gardens that were civilized before Christmas become a sorry sight. The first cleanup is usually removing branches, cones and leaves that high winds ripped from trees and dumped on decks, lawns, patios, and paths. Leafy mulches piled on garden beds to protect tender plants from killing frosts should be left in place until the third week in March. Branch dieback can be tackled right away. Sometimes it’s obvious especially with trees such as willows, where there’s

always some dieback every roots. This is wonderful news winter. If you’re not sure, just for own-root plants, but bad scratch the dubious branch to news if you bought a grafted uncover the wood beneath. If one. it’s green, the branch lives. Roots of many plants are ered with grass in the fall sometimes end often hardier than the top growth. This up with moss and bare patches in late means some may shoot again from the winter. These lawns may not need the

full power-raking and aeration treatment. But where there is moss, there should be an application of Dolomite lime followed a few weeks later by a light mulch of compost. Overly wet lawns may also benefit from a thin mulch of sand. Any bare patches should be raked, composted and seeded with grass. Vegetable gardens that grow a winter crop of moss are telling you the soil is acidic and needs an application of lime. The beds where heavy feeders such as onions and corn will be planted should be given a layer of compost as well. In these places, composted manure can be substituted for plant-based compost. – Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca

This week will mark the 13th annual Stopping the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Awareness Week. In conjunction with the annual event, a parenting forum on the cyber age will be held in Maple Ridge on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at the Greg Moore Youth Centre at 11925 Haney Pl. There will also be a screening of a short film, Think Again.

A candlelight walk will precede the Maple Ridge presentation beginning at 6:15 p.m. at Memorial Peace Park on 224th St. “The week recognizes the importance of supporting communities [in the development of] prevention, education, enforcement and intervention strategies to address the sexual exploitation of children and youth,” said Diane Sowden, executive director of Children of the Street Society. More information on the events can be found at www.childrenofthestreet. com, or at the Stop Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Awareness Week 2011 Facebook page.

Norman Foote has been performing for many years, but has recently carved out a niche for himself singing and writing songs for children. On Wednesday, March 9 he will be performing songs from his repertoire and his new CD, Love My New Shirt, with students from Highland Park and Pitt Meadows Elementary. “The show is geared for families and young audiences,” said Foote. “I’ve become very passionate about young people.” His new CD won a Juno award in 2010, and Foote calls it “the little CD that could.” “I will be singing a number of songs off that CD,” he said, “but I will be performing classic [songs] as well.” He said the children he will be performing with, about 150 of them, are not “your typical choir.” “They have so much expression and movement,” he said. “That’s why I call them my animated wall of sound.” Foote has been performing for young audiences since he was 21 years old, and said he has been lucky that he has been able to maintain many projects over the years.

Veteran Ramblers prepare for final games Of the 12 girls who joined Maple Ridge Secondary’s basketball team in Grade 8, only three stayed on through Grade 12.

On Deck Tickets available The Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club are holding their Spring Fling fundraiser. The Big Feast Bistro in Maple Ridge will be catering the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club’s Spring Fling fundraising dinner and silent auction. The event is being held on April 2, and the money raised goes to support the Whonnock Lake Paddling and Recreation Centre project and the Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Zoe Yoxall, Marina Casol and Natasha Henderson have spent countless hours running up and down basketball courts, travelling to tournaments, and practising layups. With just the provincials to go, they will soon be leaving the Ramblers uniform behind them. “In Grade 8 there were about 12 girls on the team,” said Yoxall, “and now it’s just us three [from that group].” The success of the Ramblers was a little uncertain at the beginning of this season, as the team lost four strong Grade 12 players the year before. They have surprised their opponents with strong offensive playing and a work ethic that has seen them win against some tough teams. “We’ve done a lot better than we thought,” said Yoxall. “We thought we were going to do OK, but not as good as we have,” said Henderson. Yoxall agreed, saying she thought the team has really come together. All three girls are moving on to post-secondary school next year, but said they will miss the court and the competitive nature of the sport. “It’s an everyday thing,” said Henderson, “so it’s part of our lives. Basketball is us.” When the team was not playing games, they practised six days a week under the watchful eyes of coach Don Herman, who has been coaching basketball for 30 years. In February, he hit the 1,000win mark. “He’s such a good coach,” said Henderson. “We have such a good relationship with him,” added Casol. His three Grade 12 students are ambitious to not only do well on the basketball team, but in their school work as well. Some of them also play other sports and have part-time jobs. Casol is attending the University of British Columbia next year and

Grade 12 students Zoe Yoxall, left, Marina Casol, centre, and Natasha Henderson have been playing basketball together since Grade 8. wants to study sciences to become a pharmacist, and she still wants to play basketball in intramurals if she can. Yoxall will be heading north to attend UBC Okanagan to obtain a bachelor of management before applying to the University of Victoria for law school. She also sees basketball in her future, but most likely in a local women’s league. Henderson will be attending the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s radiation therapy program, but she also wants to keep basketball as a part of her life. For the final tournament, the girls are taking each game as it comes. “I need to work on my shooting,” said Yoxall, “but it’s been getting better.” Casol agreed shooting was also her weak point, while Henderson added offence and driving to the hoop to that list. Once the season is over, the girls will be focusing on their future. “I’ll probably enjoy the break at first,” laughed Yoxall, “but then it will be like ‘what do I do?’”

Men fall to Utah The SFU men’s lacrosse team, featuring locals Branden Bloom, and Max Weselowski, lost to Salt Lake City in February. The final score was SFU, 11, and Utah, 12, in overtime, and even though the men’s lacrosse team was up 3-1 to start the contest, Utah was able to fight back and claim the win. Max Weselowski, from Meadowridge School, scored his first collegiate goal, and won four out of six face-offs. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports” Amy Judd/TIMES

Food digester cuts garbage in half

The district is subsidizing 450 solar cones to help residents reduce their garbage output.

A food digester is the latest contraption to help reduce garbage in Maple Ridge. A limited number of solar cone food digesters — a plastic container that uses solar heat and bacteria to break down food into water and carbon dioxide — will be available for $56.25 thanks to a $45 subsidy from the District of Maple Ridge. One cone per property is allowed, but only 450 are being made available on a first-come, first-served basis. They are only for Maple Ridge residents. Unlike a traditional compost, meat, fish bones and dairy products can be put into the solar cone. Ninety per cent of the contents are absorbed by water, so the cone doesn’t need emptying often. The solar cones should be installed in a sunny location, as the doublewalled cones are designed to create a heat trap of circulating air which encour-

The cones come with a package of accelerator, a 100 per cent organic and biodegradable enzyme that can be used during the winter months to speed up digestion.
