Now, the students who were going to head to Japan this year are teaming up with students who went on the exchange last year to come up with ways the school can help with the relief efforts for Japan. Public input now invited into Albion plan

A draft concept for the Albion Flats includes large green spaces and stream setbacks. by Maria Rantanen

A session for the public to comment on the plan for the Albion Flats is being planned for March 30. Maple Ridge council decided to forward its latest rendition of the Albion plan to the March 22 council meeting, but in the meantime, they are moving forward with a public information meeting at the end of the month.

Councillor Michael Morden and Some Maple Ridge councilMayor Ernie Daykin both said lors said the amount of land they had received an email indithat would be in an exclusion cating some residents application to the think the plan is already Agricultural Land going to the Agricultural Commission isn’t corLand Commission for rectly represented on exclusion. the concept plans that “This is a long council is considering. way from being finThe reworked plan ished,” Morden said at that council wants Monday’s workshop to bring to a public meeting. “This is a conmeeting is about 67 cept – we’ve got a long per cent green space way to go.” and recreational, Michael Morden Concerns were also Coun. acres of green space and stream setbacks, and about eight acres of “agricultural fields,” which could be for small-plot community gardening. It also includes 40 acres of recreational space. Council looked at four options for the Albion Flats a month ago and asked for the second scenario to be reworked with some agricultural buildings, a neighbourhood pub component, and a community centre or meeting space. Christine Carter, manager of community planning with the District of Maple Ridge, confirmed that the land doesn’t contain enough space to include offsets to satisfy the ALC.

Any offsets to agriculture will have to be off-site, Coun. Craig Speirs pointed out, saying the reworked plan is “very dense.” “This is not very smart planning,” Speirs said. He added he would like to see an agriculture benefit with a three-to-four to one ratio – Surrey has a policy with a 2:1 ratio. Speirs said he’d like all the other concept plans to be at the public meeting recognizing that the reworked plan is council’s preferred option. However, Coun. Cheryl Ashlie countered that they “are not redebating the other plans,” and that the reworked plan is the one council wants.

Home invaders hits man with crowbar

Two drug thieves accosted one man and threatened another Friday afternoon on a What’s OnLine central Maple Ridge property.

Thrift store closes

The Salvation Army Thrift Store on Lougheed Highway is scheduled to close on March 31, a decision made by the thrift stores head office. The Caring Place gives vouchers to their clients to get clothes from there, but that might be continued with other local thrift stores, said Darrell Pilgrim, director of the Salvation Army Caring Place Ministries. • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “News”

A man was attacked with a crowbar in an attempted home invasion late last week. Police, who believe the two men were hunting for a pot farm, are warning people that this type of crime is on the rise here, said RCMP Insp. Derren Lench. “This incident appears to be a case of thieves attempting to steal marijuana,” he explained. “We do not feel this type of crime will have any effect on the average citizen, but certainly poses a threat to persons who grow marijuana – either legally or illegally.” At about 3:15 p.m. Friday, two men broke onto a property on 124th Avenue, east of

232nd Street, and came face-to-face with two other men working on the residence. One of the suspects was armed with a crowbar and wielded it as a weapon, hitting one of the men. Lench said the victim was luckily not badly injured. Following the confrontation, the would-be thieves left without stealing anything. However, they had the right house because police did seize some marijuana plants from the property. “I also would like to appeal to citizens to call us if they see any strange behaviours in their neighbourhoods, or suspect a marijuana growing operation is taking place,” Lench said. “This type of crime has occurred somewhat frequently in the Lower Mainland, and all

police agencies have become aware of this activity,” he added. Both suspects are described as Caucasian, and in their early 20s, with slim builds. They drove off in a dark blue or black car, “This type possibly a newer model Nissan Altima, police of crime has said. occurred Anyone with any inforsomewhat mation is asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at frequently 604-463-6251. in the Lower Or, to remain anonymMainland…” ous, tipsters can call CrimeStoppers at 1-800Insp. Imagine playing poker against the best players in the world. Now imagine playing poker against the best players in the world with a $100,000 of someone else’s money. That was the dream realized by Blenz coffee shop owner Ken Hrankowski this February. Hrankowski, 51, who retired from the Vancouver police force in December and now runs Blenz on Dewdney Trunk Road, was chosen to be part of PokerStars. net’s The Big Game last month. This poker reality show, filmed in Las Vegas, gives an amateur, but still a good poker player, a chance to play with experts, and PokerStars floats them $100,000. “It’s basically the best players in the world playing at such a high level,” explained executive producer Mark Mayer, “and someone like me playing with them.” All the five pros who play at the table buy in with their own money, while the amateur gets to keep anything they win above the $100,000 float.

Ken Hrankowski (top left) tried to learn all he could from players such as 11-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. Hrankowski has owned the Blenz coffee shop since 2007. “The idea is that they see free money at the table because I’m an amateur,” said Hrankowski. The whole event is filmed for TV, and everyone must play 150 hands, which is about six hours of straight playing. Hrankowski had to win three online tournaments, then submit what he called a “cheesy audition video” for the show, after which producers called him for further information. After numerous interviews, he found out in the beginning of February that he and his wife were flying to Vegas for a chance to win some serious

money. “We thought people would find him compelling and he has somewhat of a heroic story,” said Mayer, “being an ex-cop and all.” “They treated us well,” said Hrankowski. “They gave us spending money, a limo to and from the airport. They really did things top-notch.” For someone who has been playing poker for about seven years, meeting and playing with the pros was one of the highlights of the whole trip. “That was such an awesome experience,” he said.

“These are guys that I’ve idolized.” As the show will not air until June 13, the names of the pros and Hrankowski’s placement cannot be revealed, but he is excited for people to see it. “You’re nervous because you’re playing with these professionals,” he said. “There’s 50 cameras all over the place, and if you do something stupid, everyone’s gonna see it.” Hrankowski used to go to the casinos about three or four times a week when he first started but he never thought he would get this far. “It’s easy to get frustrated,” he said. “There’s ups and downs where even the Amy Judd/TIMES pros have said ‘what am I doing’?” “It can change your life,” he added. “You just have to play the cards and play the chips.” This is not the end for Hrankowski either. He plans to return for the World Series of Poke in Las Vegas in June, and he wants to train with some of the pros down there. “Playing with these guys makes me want to learn more,” he said. Hrankowski will be part of PokerStars.net The Big Game season two, premiering June 13.

Recall petition begins Canvassers are spreading out in Maple Ridge to collect signatures for the recall of Liberal MLA Marc Dalton. by Brian Russell

editorial@mrtimes.com

The face-to-face work has begun in an effort to oust the local MLA. Now that the petition application to recall Marc Dalton, Liberal MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission, has been approved, supporters of the movement have set up booths in Maple Ridge in an effort to collect 14,082 signatures by May 9. Organizers of the recall petition believe the effort is warranted because of Dalton’s support of the introduction

of the Harmonized Sales Tax by the B.C. Liberals in July of last year, which many feel they were deceived by. “I think a lot of us are in it for different reasons and for me, it is about the HST, the fact that the Liberals, they lied to us, said petition canvasser Lee Carter. “I think if the constituents want or don’t want something, I think it’s our members of parliament who should be listening to our voices. And, I think they’re not.” Gaitan Dupont, a petition supporter who helped direct Maple Ridge residents to a signature booth Friday, had his own message for Dalton. “We are hoping to get 40 per cent of the population to sign and then get rid of Mr. Dalton. Goodbye, Mr. Dalton.”

Three years ago, it looked like the beginning of the end for Brendan Morrison. The NHL ironman had become more vulnerable because a string of hip, hernia, and wrist surgeries were followed by an ACL tear of the centre’s right knee in a March 26, 2008 collision with defenceman Ruslan Salei. It killed Morrison’s season. It stalled his odometer at 513 games, but not his resolve, because the Pitt Meadows native would continue his career with stops in Anaheim, Dallas, Washington, and Calgary. He’s now logged 953 games. Which, of course, begs the question: What has the latest setback done to the psyche of the rejuvenated former Vancouver Canucks forward? Sidelined with a left-knee strain in

Pitt Meadows native Brendan Morrison is trying to stay positive after straining his left knee.

a March 2 cornerboards collision with Niklas Hjalmarsson, the swelling won’t totally subside for two more weeks. At that point, Morrison will either ramp up his rehab for a final push toward the playoffs, or start wondering at age 35 and being a pending unrestricted free agent once again whether he has finally hit the end of a long hockey road. It’s easy to think the worst. Maybe harder to hope for the best. Then again, Morrison isn’t walking with a cane. He isn’t limping. And he’s not distraught. “It’s just disbelief,” said Morrison, who has 43 points (9-34) and is a plus 13 in 66 games this season. “It’s very frustrating because this is the best time of year to be playing and we’ve clawed back into the playoff race. That being said, you have to deal with it and face it head-on. There’s nothing more you can do,” he said. “I knew right away that something was wrong when I got hit. Compared to the last one [knee injury], at this stage it feels much better but we’ve still got a ways to go. I’m walking around pretty good on it.”

Ridge Meadows Hospital, seen from the air, is under scrutiny – like several Fraser Valley hospitals. Fraser Health Authority is reexamining more than 400 CT scans reviewed by a radiologist, whose qualifications have been called into question.

How Stress can make you FAT Ever wonder why your sugar and fat cravings seem uncontrollable during times of stress? The answer lies in your hormones. Adrenaline and Cortisol, your body’s hormones released during stressful times to engage the body for “fight or flight”, have fat and sugar as their building blocks. In fact EVERY necessary hormone in your body does too. While we don’t have to worry about being chased down by a lion or bear too often in life, our “lion attacks” our body produces stress hormones for are more modern: Divorce, Death of a loved one, job instability... Canucks getting eliminated from the playoffs... These “stresses of life” are what drive our Adrenaline and Cortisol levels through the roof. It’s important to note that the responses to these stress hormones, namely – high blood pressure, increased cholesterol production, increased sensitivity and alertness, decreased immune, reproductive, and digestive function to name a few, are NORMAL results of high stress hormone levels in the body. Short term, no big deal – but long term, they lead to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia, sleep loss, digestive disorders, reproductive disorders, anxiety, depression, chronic infections to name a few. Take a look at the pills in your medicine cabinet. There’s a 90% chance you’re taking them because of stress or a lifestyle factor. As a chiropractor, this interests me greatly because 100% of my job involves removing stress from the spine and rest of the body.

Errors in reading CT scans by a Fraser Valley doctor has raised a red flag for some patients. by Matthew Claxton

Postmedia Network Inc.

Patients in Maple Ridge may be getting a call about their CT scans after problems have arisen involving a radiologist who wasn’t fully qualified. Fraser Health is looking at 407 scans made in Ridge Meadows Hospital, between November 2010 and March 4 of this year, along with 96 from Langley Memorial Hospital from 2008 and 2009. The radiologist, originally trained in South Africa and Europe, also worked at Abbotsford Regional and Chilliwack General hospitals, where hundreds of other scans were taken. Problems first arose in 2009, after the doctor had been working in Langley and Fraser Valley hospitals for more than a year. A few problems emerged with his interpretations of mammograms, and his previous work on those was reviewed, said David Plug, a spokesperson for the Fraser Health Authority. The doctor, who has not been named, went to Europe and got some further training, then returned and began working in

A9

Ridge Meadows Hospital in November 2010. He worked there until a week ago. A regular quarterly review of his work turned up problems with CT scans. So far, discrepancies have been found in 11 out of several hundred scans, Plug said. As a result, all the doctor’s CT, mammogram, and X-ray scans taken at Ridge Meadows are being reviewed. While his work in Langley, Chilliwack, and Abbotsford was being looked at every three months, a more thorough look is underway now at his 1,933 CT scans. This includes 1,158 CT scans performed at Abbotsford Regional, 679 scans at Chilliwack General, and 96 from Langley Memorial Hospital. Going through the large volume of scans will take some time. So far, none of the problematic scans have resulted in a change in treatment

for the patient, Plug said. Doctors for the patients are being contacted as issues come up, scan by scan. Patients are also getting a letter as their cases are reviewed. Most patients, however, won’t be contacted until the entire review is complete. Plug said there’s very little they could tell them right now. Patients who do have concerns or want to know more about the review should call 604-851-4700, ext. 646617. The number will put people in touch with the radiology department at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. An investigation into problematic scans and unqualified radiologists is underway. This doctor is the fourth discovered in recent weeks to have had problems with scans. The investigation will also look at how doctors are granted privileges to work in hospitals. The system is run by doctors themselves, through a review by peers.

But few of the patients that I talk to, or people in the classes that I teach understand that your food cravings are coming from your body’s attempt to re-load on it’s stress hormone production. In other words, we’re genetically designed to crave those fatty and sugary foods so we can make more hormones to have the energy to run from the lion.

So what do you do for permanent weight loss? 1) If your weight loss regime doesn’t include stress reduction in the form of exercise, yoga, meditation, or some form of personal growth and development, you can kiss your chances of long term success goodbye. 2) You have to create a why. For some, it’s a vacation. For others, they want to be able to live to see their grandchildren get married. Without a big enough why, you might as well not even bother. 3) Start by Adding. Depriving yourself of the foods you love is a stressor in itself. By gradually adding the good stuff in–in regular intervals can you take control of your cravings. 4) Take control of your blood sugar levels. When you study and learn how insulin plays a role in your cravings, you can take control of your diet rather than having it control you. Slim cabinet not a bad sign Just as the flowers burst from the ground at the first sign of spring in Victoria, so too have the new shoots of a provincial cabinet come into view. It’s a time for political renewal, with Premier Christy Clark taking the oath of office, and then appointing a team of 17 caucus members. The most notable thing about this cabinet is its simplicity. Responsibility for health is not scattered across two or three – or four – ministries. Instead, there is Michael de Jong, Minister for Health, full stop. Likewise, Blair Lekstrom takes Transportation and Infrastructure, Agriculture goes to Don McRae, and Kevin Falcon holds posts as Minister of Finance and as premier’s deputy. With George Abbott in Education, that puts all of Clark’s rivals for the party leadership in senior positions. So far, Clark has shown a desire for simplicity, and no inclination to seek revenge for the events of the campaign. Those are both laudable. Another major player in Gordon Campbell’s cabinet – and one who almost took a shot at the leadership race before stepping back at the last minute – Rich Coleman gets to keep his work on housing, but he will also be in charge of Mining and Energy. The former forests minister has a penchant for taking on big, resourcebased ministries, so will likely be at home here. And the environmental activists who have concerns about toxic tailing ponds or offshore oil drilling will find a familiar antagonist. Another notable change is Mary Polak’s shift away from the tricky, sensitive post overseeing Children and Families, to the tricky, sensitive post overseeing Aboriginal Relations. Polak should feel right at home, at least as far as crisis management goes. There will be plenty more of that for her. As cabinets go, it’s not bad. But the true test always comes in the first crisis. Hopefully, it will be a gentle one, so that the cabinet is tested, but not tested to destruction. That would not serve anyone in B.C. – Liberal, NDP, or other – very well. – M.C.

Cat’s neglect inexcusable Dear editor,

I don’t think the letter I am writing can go in the paper, because I am so mad. You remember that I wrote you a letter [Don’t just dump unwanted pets, Jan. 28 Letters, TIMES] about a little cat that was dumped on the dike by my house, and I took it in, otherwise it would have been coyote fodder? Well, I took it to the vet three times, and today I had to put her down. While little Sally was on the dike, trying to stay alive, she may have been bitten by a coyote and received internal damages. This is thanks to the people who dumped her.

This little cat and many more like her did not deserve this. At least we were able to give her two months of loving care, before I had to put her down. But, how can we get rotten people to understand how disgusting they are? There is no need for this. If you cannot keep your animals, take them somewhere or to someone who will keep them, or put them down. Do not ever dump them. I better not ever know who those people are, because I would like them on a sinking ship in the middle of the ocean, with hungry sharks swimming around.

Marc Dalton recall

Recall about making a difference Dear editor,

Where was Corisa Bell before the HST? I’m glad Mr. Dixon asked [Recall purpose laughable, March 11 Letters, TIMES]. Prior to Fight HST, Corisa was attending her children’s PAC meetings, performing as her children’s class rep, organizing the annual Christmas Haven, supporting local theatre, encouraging her family to volunteer at Katie’s Place, and taking great care of her family as a mom and wife. She still does all of this. Where is she now? This very second, she’s missing her family, soaking wet, hungry, tired, and cold, trudging through the dark streets of Maple Ridge with her canvasser sheet, struggling to make a difference. In a country where the rich continue to take from the less fortunate and kick into submission anyone trying to make a difference, Corisa still fights. Why? Because she knows that what’s happening with the HST isn’t right. Basi-Virk isn’t right. BC Rail isn’t right. If only our MLAs weren’t too selfish to stand up in this same way. It’s unfortunate that the [MLA Marc] Dalton defence needs to resort to lies and mistruths, like she’s NDP or she’s selfpromoting, to try and undermine the purpose. They do it because the truth isn’t strong enough for them to stand upon. The truth is, people are upset. The fact is, she’s never voted NDP in her life. If there’s support to be had from the NDP, though, I’m sure she’d like to see it: funding, advertising, locations for signup, anything. Unfortunately, the NDP has provided zero support. As far as self-promotion, Corisa has nothing to personally gain from this

recall, and is sacrificing significantly to participate. Corisa’s aware of the tremendous odds that are against the recall: billion-dollar corporations, business lobbyist groups, teams of professional political strategists, a broken democracy that fights its people. She’s hoping that, by working to make a difference, people will see through the Liberals and make the effort to get involved or at least sign a piece of paper. Marc should have represented his constituents on the topic of HST – he didn’t. Marc should have represented his constituents on the Mission hospital – he didn’t. The Maple Ridge Teacher’s Association sent out a newsletter on the important topic of merit pay, factually stating Marc doesn’t know what’s going on – yet that’s his job, plus he still claims to be a teacher. I contacted Marc about the HST before Fight HST. He certainly didn’t advocate for me, and he certainly didn’t advocate for the majority of his constituents who signed the HST petition. He’s supporting the Liberal lies to keep himself employed. To answer another of Mr. Dixon’s questions, Corisa is the lead organizer, but could not officially be the recall proponent because she no longer lives in Marc’s riding. See how far off the NDP conspiracy theory is yet? Lastly, I thought Mr. Dixon might want to know where she’ll be when this is all over: in the arms of her family, who appreciate her for being such a passionate role model for her daughters. To get involved or arrange to sign the recall, email her at corisa@donewithdalton.com.

Energy

Hydro power plans worth costs Dear editor,

BC Hydro is embarking on a $6-billion regeneration plan to significantly upgrade the province’s aging electricity generating and transmission infrastructure. Our group, B.C. Citizens for Green Energy, would like to applaud Hydro for making this major reinvestment in the province’s public electricity infrastructure. It is long overdue and well warranted. BC Hydro’s regeneration plan includes a number of crucial projects aimed at meeting the public’s current and future demands for clean, reliable electricity. A prime example is the $800-million upgrade planned for the 80-year-old Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse. The Ruskin Dam was built in 1930, and has not received any significant upgrades

or modifications since the last generator was added in the 1950s. Yes, the cost of these upgrades will put “upward pressure” on hydro rates. However, residential electricity rates in B.C. are currently among the lowest in North America and have been kept artificially low, in part, by putting off upgrades and equipment updates such as those proposed for the Ruskin Dam. Moreover, most of our hydroelectric infrastructure in B.C. was built in the decades following the Second World War, and is showing its age. BC Hydro’s regeneration plan and reinvestment in the province’s core public energy assets is therefore as vital as it is overdue.

Store helps ease high price of grad glamour Local businesses chip in to soften the financial burden for one lucky high school graduate. by Maria Rantanen

mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Nancy McConnell had a teenaged customer come into her consignment store on 228th Street looking for a graduation dress. When the dresses were too expensive for her, McConnell brought out her niece’s old grad dress, the grad-to-be tried it on, and it fit like a glove. “I feel like a princess,” she told McConnell, who proceeded to sell the $1,000 dress to her for $50. That’s when she got the idea to hold a Princess for a Day

draw to help one lucky grad pay for all the paraphernalia that goes with high school graduation. McConnell will enter the name of any upcoming grad who buys a dress from her store Crazy About Clothes by the end of March into a draw that will include an hour limo service, a $50 manicure or pedicure, free makeup application, shampoo and hairstyle on grad day, as well as a free photo shoot and specialty grad cake. “I wanted to have the draw (because) I knew that part of it is so expensive,” McConnell said. The services were all donated by local companies who heard about her idea to help a local high school student make her graduation day extra special. Crazy About Clothes is located at 11952 228th St.

Former inmate’s film tackles the ‘revolving door’ of women in jail A non-profit school helps make mini-documentaries for social change. Maria Rantanen mrantanen@mrtimes.com

Maria Rantanen/TIMES

Mo Korchinski has reconnected with her family, including a granddaughter (in collage) after turning her life around. She’s also created a documentary, Revolving Door, depicting life in jail and her addictions. them to get real help, she said. Working on the project provided the material for the film. She made her film at Pull Focus after unsuccessfully applying for grants to make the film. “[I wanted] to get people to look at women in prison differently, to humanize them and to make people realize it’s just one big revolving door,” she said of her 11-minute documentary. Korchinski belongs to Women in Healing, a support group for women who have been incarcerated. “I’m sick of burying people … people who get out (of jail) and die,” she said. Korchinski will be showing her minidocumentary on April 4 at the Maple Ridge Baptist Church as part of a forum that will present the research project she has been working on through the Family Practice department at UBC’s medical school. Revolving Door is also posted on YouTube. Korchinski also hopes the film will be made into a full 42-minute documentary that will be shown on television.

Mo Korchinski can’t pinpoint the exact turning point that got her out of a life of drugs, alcohol and jail, but she thinks it was partly the babies. The babies were part of the motherbaby program at the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women, a program that not only helped the mothers and babies bond – it allowed the other women in prison to reach out emotionally. Korchinski turned 40 in jail, and at that time she’d been in jail seven times, all together three and a half years. She had not seen her own children for years, and those babies in prison reminded her of the family she missed. Since leaving, getting cleaned up, and working, she has reconnected with her two daughters and her son. She also has a granddaughter whom she is close to. “I’m really fortunate my kids don’t hate me for being out of their life for 11 years,” Korchinski said. Korchinski has turned her experiences of being in and out of jail after a life of drugs and alcohol into a mini-documentary, Revolving Door, through the nonprofit film school Pull Focus, which helps people make films to effect social change. She is also working as a research assistant for a University of British Columbia study into why women are going in and out of jail. Korchinski spent a lot time sitting at the bus stop outside the jail waiting for the women to come out so she could interview them for the research project. When women leave jail and have a criminal record, it’s hard for them to get a job to support themselves, so they often fall back into a life of crime with the unhealthy lifestyle that goes with that. “They unlock the key to the gate, but they don’t unlock the key to society,” Korchinksi said. Most women end up in jail for a month or two, which is never long enough for

KATIE’S PLACE Poor CORA is still with us! She came from a home that didn’t care for her very much and they simply left her behind when they moved. Since being at the shelter Cora has lost her eyesight. She has glaucoma. She does not need any medication and can lead a full and happy life. A shelter is not the place this senior girl. Please give this girl a quiet, loving home where she can finally feel wanted.

PAULINE was a mature cat when her person had to move and leave her. They had been together for more than 11 years. Pauline is a timid cat who was rigid with fear when she first arrived at Katie’s Place. Pauline is desperately lonely. She stays out of the way and only steps forward if someone comes in that she recognizes. Pauline needs a real home. In an environment where she can get to know people, it wouldn’t be long before she’d be offering her love and loyalty.

TRIXIE lost the home she’d had for 10 of her 11 years when someone in the family developed allergies. She grew up in a home with full size dogs and two children. She was a well-behaved little cat. She’s affectionate without being clingy. Trixie is a pretty little cat who was a wonderful family member but being a senior puts her at a disadvantage for adoption. We don’t want this super social girl to spend her senior years in a shelter.

MURRAY was grieving when he arrived at Katie’s Place because his person passed away and he lost his home -- everything he’d ever counted on was gone. He had been adopted as an adult but, as far as his family knew, he had never lived with other animals and he had always been an indoor cat so the shelter was a shock for him. Although he has come to terms with his losses he is very unhappy. Please give this senior boy a reason to smile again.

Saturday night was a turning point in Mike Heathfield’s career. After numerous belts, wins, and titles, for the first time, the ex-boxer was at a fighting event as a trainer, and this is a role he is going to have to get used to. The Maple Ridge resident has been fighting for a number of years, the last time was July 15, 2010, but after a heartfelt plea from his son he said he decided to move on to a new chapter in his life. “My son has seen me fight twice,” said Heathfield, “and he said ‘daddy I love you, I don’t want you to fight anymore’.” “That certainly has a dramatic effect on any decision you make,” he added. Even though he is raring to get back into the ring, he said his competitive fighting days are now behind him, and he is looking forward to a new venture. Heathfield was co-cornering with Robbie Della Penna at Saturday night’s Rumble at the Rock event in Richmond, and their fighter Paul Tyrl was taking on Mike Dowsett in a cruiserweight bout. For Heathfield, it was doubly exciting because he has fought Dowsett before, and predicted that Tyrl would win the fight. Unfortunately for Heathfield and Della Penna, Tyrl lost by decision. “We were robbed,” said Heathfield after the event. “If anything it should have been a draw. Paul should have definitely worked his jab more.” “We’re gonna train harder and we’re gonna come back,” added Della Penna. Despite the loss, the atmosphere was electric inside Richmond’s theatre on Saturday night, with much of the credit going to special guest

However, Heathfield will not be cutting boxing out of his life completely. He plans to open up a gym in Maple Ridge soon that will have a heavy emphasis on boxing. He wants to make it accessible to everyone, and work with under-privileged kids if he can. “I don’t want to teach fighting to thugs to pound on people,” he said. “I want to teach it as a sport.” For a man who some might say is entering the stage of his life where he might begin to slow down and retire, Heathfield is far from that. He is well-known in the Vancouver boxing community, as evidenced by the amount of people wanting to shake his hand at Saturday’s event, and he has a lot of ambition to leave an even bigger mark on the sport as a trainer. “I’m 53 and I don’t even feel like I’m 20,” he laughed.

Mickey Ward, whose story was made famous by the recent blockbuster The Fighter. For Heathfield, meeting one of boxing’s legends and being a part of it again, made it even harder for him to hold back. “This is really tough for me,” he admitted about being on the outside of the ropes, but a promise is a promise, and the 53-year-old said he knows it is time to retire his professional gloves. “[Saturday] is kind of a closure for me,” he said. “I’m going to miss the camaraderie,” he admitted. “I’m going to miss training two months before a fight, miss going to the gym.”

Rustlers seeking help to get to provincial tourney

Ridge Meadows boys will be the only local team in Bantam Tier 3 hockey provincials. by Amy Judd

ajudd@mrtimes.com

A visit from a Vancouver Canuck is definitely the highlight of the season for a local minor hockey team. Ryan Kesler paid a visit to Pitt Meadows Twin Rinks in late February to skate and practise with the Ridge Meadows Rustlers Bantam A3 hockey team,

and his presence seems to have spurred the boys on to make it all the way to the provincials. They are the only Ridge Meadows team going, but due to their unexpected success, they are falling short on funds. “We need to hire a bus to get there,” said assistant manager Lois Bruce. The cost is about $9,000 and Bruce said they are getting about $500 in help from the hockey association, and they need to find the rest themselves. “We’re doing everything we can,” she said, adding they are setting up fund-

Teen novels tackle real-life issues by Dana Ionson

Special to the TIMES

Since Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight burst onto the teen fiction scene, supernatural fiction has exploded for teens and adults. For readers who want a little dose of reality, here are some books about ordinary and not-so-ordinary teens, dealing with real-life challenges. • Dear George Clooney, Please Marry My Mom by Susin Nielson Twelve-year-old Violet was crushed when her mom and dad got divorced. When her dad gets remarried to Jennica, a blond haired, buxom B-list actress, she is horrified. Violet’s dad and Jennica quickly have twins and move to Los Angeles, abandoning Violet and her little sister Rosie. Violet’s mom doesn’t manage to find romance so easily. After dating a string of losers Violet decides it’s time to step in. She needs to find a man who deserves her mom. An unlikely pairing, yes, but Violet thinks her mom and George Clooney would really hit it off. Painful and funny, this book is about growing up, forgiveness, friendship and, of course, George Clooney. • The Double Life of Cassiel Roadnight by Jenny Valentine Chap has been living in shelters and on the streets of London since

Maple Ridge librarian Dana Ionson weighs in on a few of the new books out for teens. he was 10. While taking a break from the streets in a teen shelter, a social worker thrusts a missing persons poster at him. The picture looks like Chap, but it describes a teen named Cassiel who has been missing for two years. Chap denies he’s Cassiel, but then thinks it over. Cassiel has a family who loves and misses him. Cassiel’s life looks much better than his own, so Chap assumes Cassiel’s identity and meets his new family. Chap’s impersonation goes well until he learns more about the circumstances around Cassiel’s disappearance and who may want him to remain missing.

• The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart In the summer between Grades 9 and 10, Frankie develops a knockout figure and self-confidence to go along with it. Frankie has never been successful in the boyfriend department, but she decides to date Mathew, one of the most popular senior boys. Becoming Mathew’s girlfriend is easy, but Frankie wants to be more than the girlfriend; she wants to rule the school. When she finds out she’s excluded from an all-male secret society, Frankie finds ways to get the control she craves. Unfortunately she also becomes a criminal mastermind. • The Devil’s Breath by David Gilman Fifteen-year-old Max Gordon knows someone wants him dead. The attempts on his life aren’t subtle; he has been shot at during an evening run, assaulted at an airport, and trailed everywhere he goes. What Max doesn’t know is why. He knows his missing father was working on stopping construction of a controversial dam in an ecologically sensitive area in Namibia. Max needs to fill in the rest of the details in order to save his life.
