A local NDP candidate, along with NDP MP for Burnaby-New Westminster, Peter Julian, is calling for the federal government and MP Randy Kamp to stand up for Mission and Abbotsford, and not allow a publicprivate partnership (P3) project to provide those communities with water

Deja vu must be a common sensation for Maple Ridge Concert Band conductor and musical director Ed Dumas. He’s been there before, again, and again, and again – at Maple Ridge Secondary, his alma mater, with the concert band he’s been a member of since 1977.
There he was, on Tuesday, March 29 – inside MRSS’s music room, directing the band’s rehearsal for its upcoming spring One Day In A Small Town concert. Ed and his wife Laurie, have been band members for 25 years, now. Laurie is the concert coordinator and flute/piccolo player; a trumpet player, Ed now stands at the front of the stage, holding a conductor’s baton and facing the musicians. The band formed more than 50 years ago and includes about 40 members ranging in age from 15 to 70. It has played a major role in Ed and Laurie’s lives.
“It’s a big chunk,” Ed said. “We’ve toured with this band, we’ve camped in the summertime with this band, we’ve got lifelong friends with this band,” Laurie said. Ed said the band plays a significant role as a musical leader in Maple Ridge. “They’re the key musical group in town,” Ed said. “We cater mostly to adults but students come and play as well. It’s not really about ages, it’s about whether or not the musicians are comfortable playing at the high level that these folks play at. If they’re comfortable, they stay.” When Ed joined the band in the late 70s, he was attending Grade 11 at
MRSS. He was looking for another, what he called, “fun place to play.” His passion for music is more than just a hobby. He’s made it into a career as a band teacher with the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District. Tonight’s concert, with special guests The Langley Concert Band, will be held on the main theatre stage at the ACT. The production is close to the Dumas’s hearts. It is made up of a series of musical vignettes that apply to Maple Ridge, a place the couple has called home for the better part of a quarter century. Ed has lived in the community since 1970. The only time he’s been away from his hometown was when he attended
the University of Victoria, where he met his future wife. “It’s all about Maple Ridge,” Laurie said. “The pieces are supposed to highlight our best features, like the trains that course through our town, the rain, and the mountains… it’s all about Maple Ridge.” The music will be accompanied by a few pictures flashed on a big screen behind the band. “It’s really about the musical performance,” Ed said. The North Lougheed land development is high on the list for two candidates vying for the mayor’s position in Pitt Meadows in the November elections. Councillors Deb Walters and Doug Bing have both confirmed they are throwing their hat into the ring. “Agriculture land has always been key for us to protect,” said Walters, and cited the North Lougheed land development as one of the most important issues in Pitt Meadows today. “That’s going to be a huge piece,” she added, “an election piece, and that’s why we are going out to the public for their feedback.” “That is the big key right there, just developing that as smart and as proper as we can.” Bing confirmed that is an issue for him as well, saying that area of land is really the last large piece that can be developed in the city. “That’s the next big piece that we’re working
on,” he said, “and we want to get public input.” Communication is an issue close to Bing’s heart, and he wants to make sure the public is aware of what is going on, and that they have the opportunity to give feedback. “Social media is a sign of the times,” he said. “There are a lot of people out there that may be too shy to show up to a meeting or speak in public, but they can still comment.” Both councillors have at least one term under their belts, and said although the decision to run was a big one, they know they have the right tools for the job. “I’ve been contemplating it for some time,” said Walters. “Even prior to Don’s [MacLean] announcement [that he was not seeking reelection].” Walters said Pitt Meadows is a growing community that needs a full-time mayor, and she is one of the few councillors able to do that. “Out of fairness for our residents and our city,” she said, “they deserve it.” Despite the fact that Bing also runs a dentist practise, he said that does
not get in the way of his duties to the city. “I can control my hours and days,” he said. “I’m prepared to do whatever is needed to do the job properly.” Walters believes that the city of Pitt Meadows is on the right path, and she wants to keep it that way. She added that other big issues that she believes are important for residents include the airport, keeping economic development moving forward to create more jobs in the community, and working with neighbouring communities as closely as possible. “I think people know I do communicate with people,” she added. “I think that’s very important. I want to be the voice for the people who don’t get heard.” “I think it’s really important that we connect with the younger people,” he said, who wants to get more young people involved in volunteering in the community.

Two events were held in the community on Sunday to thank people who give of their time. A pancake breakfast was held at Red Robin’s in Maple Ridge, and later at 1 p.m. an appreciation event was held at Meadow Gardens Golf Course in Pitt Meadows. The Mayor of Pitt Meadows Don MacLean thanked volunteers for what they do for the community, but he noted many people couldn’t come out to the event because they were volunteering. Isabel Forgues is 89 years old and she has been volunteering in Pitt Meadows

Ridge Meadows RCMP had a busy year in 2010. Not only were they enforcing laws in the community, they were also volunteering their time at events and launching both Facebook and Twitter accounts. RCMP Supt. Dave Walsh gave a presentation at Pitt Meadows council last week outlining some of the department’s successes and focus areas. One of the important points raised was that Ridge Meadows RCMP want to practise an ongoing assessment of operations to maximize their resources. “We are fortunate in Pitt Meadows that
we don’t have too much serious crime,” said Walsh, but he pointed out that the department has a leadership group within their senior management that will shuffle resources around if need be. In 2010, Ridge Meadows upgraded their cellblock to bring it up to RCMP safety standards and were out on the streets performing enhanced road checks for impaired driving. “I realize there are some sensitivities in the restaurant and bar industry,” said Walsh, “but this is saving lives.” Youth has always been an important target for the detachment, and that is part of the reason why both Facebook and Twitter was launched last year. “Youth especially don’t communicate in traditional ways any more,” said Walsh. Officers volunteered last year with Cops for Cancer, after-school youth sports, the Pitt Meadows Day Parade, and the Santa Parade.

After the interview, she conducted what she called a “debrief,” pointing out his strengths and how he could improve, for example, checking for typos in his resume and adding more information about what he’d done and how it would tie into the job he was seeking. “Those things are really important,” Kennedy said. Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton interviewed five students and said he enjoyed the process and giving feedback to students on how to improve. As a teacher in his civilian life, however, Dalton said he emphasizes the importance of education to the students he interviews, saying it’s important a job doesn’t get in the way of their schooling. But he said he was impressed overall with the students he interviewed. “You can see the keenness of the students,” he said.

Suits and ties aren’t the normal attire of high school students but that was the dress code for Grade 10 students last Wednesday at Samuel Robertson Technical School. Nervous handshakes, resumes, job interviews — Grade 10 students at SRT had to put on their best front as they were interviewed by prominent people in the community: the mayor, their MLA, school board trustees and business people. It was all part of Planning 10, a compulsory course that teaches students how to prepare for life after high school — and a big part of that is getting a job. The mock interviews were in the school library, and students were told how to dress — “not too tight, not too short, not too low-cut,” said Planning 10 teacher Leiane Garant. The students had done some interview preparation and written their resumes and cover letters with help from their teacher, but there was still a lot of “mixed emotion” in the room, Garant said. While interviewers reported the students did well and showed a lot promise, Garant said many were nervous walking into the library. “Even some (students) who have a lot of bravado were shaking today,” Garant said. Local bounty at gala A food-centred fundraiser next Tuesday will benefit the CEED Centre. Local resident and volunteer Rebecca Awram wanted to put her professional brokering skills to good use for the CEED Centre. So she organized an ecoflavoured event that will draw upon several of her passions at the same time. “I like wine and fine cuisine, but I also know that we have to be better stewards of our environment. That’s why we came up with the Cheers to the Planet: Eat, Drink and be Eco event on April 19.” The fundraiser at the ACT will feature organic, sustainable or local products from seven wineries, two breweries, four organic dairies and six food establishments. Awram discovered the CEED Centre only a short time ago. As a single mother with a teenage son, she was initially attracted to the action group looking to set up a food co-op as a potential source of affordable organic produce. She joined in a

Get out and volunteer This week is a national event – one that has a dramatic impact on every community across the country. Indeed, this week’s focus is something that defines the concept of community for many people. This week is National Volunteer Week, a week officially set aside to honour volunteers, and to raise awareness of what volunteers do for the communities they serve. The officials who have set aside the week recently calculated the volunteer commitment across Canada: six and a half million – the official tally of volunteers in this country of a few more than 30 millions of souls. At first, it’s hard to believe that one in every five Canadians is tallied on the volunteers’ side of the ledger. But when you think of all the volunteer efforts right here in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, it becomes difficult to believe that the number could be so small. Think about it. What is a volunteer? According to Webster, a volunteer is “a person who enters or offers to enter into service of his own free will.” In other words, a volunteer is a person who provides a service for free, like a kids’ soccer team’s coach, for instance. Or somebody who knocks on doors for the Kidney Foundation. Or the people who get together and do something – almost anything – to raise money for the Cancer Society (Terry Fox has to be the Grand Champion Volunteer of all time). Or how about the fellow who stops to help out, without expectation of payment, when your car leaves you stranded on the side of the road? It’s a cliche that it is difficult to imagine how we could get through life without volunteers. But surely, for the vast majority of us anyway, it would be just as difficult to get through an entire lifetime without being a volunteer. In fact, if you haven’t been a volunteer, you haven’t been living. It’s time you changed your style and joined up with the rest of humanity. – B.G.

Dear Editor, Will there actually be a cost saving if the school district extends spring break? According to information on the website, under Calendar FAQ, it will not affect salaries. Employees who work with students will take the additional six days off as holidays, but will make up for that time by having a slightly longer regular working day. Employees who do not work directly with students might work on those days or might make up the time by adding days elsewhere in their work schedule, but they would not lose any pay. There is also, apparently, work to provide low-cost programs for families, especially for vulnerable students. Funding will be provided through a provincial Community Links program and Municipal Parks and Leisure Services.
Is off loading school district expenses onto other government budgets true saving? Taxpayers ultimately pay. Many families will also have extra costs associated with an extended break. Research proves adding a few minutes to the end of the day to make up for the lost days has no educational merit, so why should that even be considered? The school district prepares an achievement contract, which is a public statement of commitment by a Board of Education, to improve success for each student in the district. How will lost days of instruction improve success for each student? Please pay attention to how trustees vote on this issue on April 13. Dear Editor, As the store manager of the London Drugs in Maple Ridge and a 35-year-resident, I have a good understanding of how passionate local residents are about their horses. I also understand the issues they have with the lack of acceptance the public has with sharing roads and trails. When speaking to several of our staff who own horses, and those who volunteer their time for horse-related issues, they are surprised by a recent letter to the editor [Horses don’t suck, April 4 Letters, TIMES]. The comment, however taken or heard, was made in jest to a customer who was being assisted with horse movies. It would be difficult to find staff that would say “horses suck” with any ill intent. The staff person in question is quite upset that it was taken in a negative manner. London Drugs is committed to being an upstanding member of the community. I would ask that the one comment be addressed in the context intended, and not as a representation of how any of our staff feel about horses. Dear Editor, It would seem some people have a problem believing in the recall legislation and its associated costs. Let’s try and look at this with fresh eyes. Let’s say a group of people need the services of a lawyer or advocate to represent them with some legal or some other similar problem. So you listen to a few prospective candidates to see what they can do for you and to find out if you are on the same page in your stated goals. Promises are made and a seemingly suitable spokesperson is hired to be your group’s advocate. Elaborate costumes, big wigs, platform shoes, flashing lights, and strobe machines may be a few things people might expect at rock concerts, but in one music company’s opinion, that takes away from the pure music experience. Classic Albums Live takes iconic albums from the ’60s and ’70s and recreates them live on stage. “We don’t care about looking like the band or wearing costumes,” said producer and founder Craig Martin. The goal of the show is to allow music lovers the chance to enjoy the music without the fanfare, much like a classical music orchestra. On April 16, fans of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon will have a chance to listen to the album as if they are listening to a record in their bedroom. “Fifty years from now we will be listening to Dark Side of the Moon,” said Martin. Martin said the show is like a Seinfeld episode, “there is no show.” “We just stand there and play music,” he said, “and yet there is a sublime connection that happens between the musicians and the audience.” He considers Pink Floyd’s album, released in 1979, to be one of the best shows. “My musicians are the best in the

It’s unusual to see people using mountain bikes in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, but Gladys England’s team, Team F.A.C.T, is determined to finish the ride strong with them. The Enbridge Ride is a two-day cycling event that starts in Cloverdale and ends near Bellingham and takes place from June 18 to 19. All funds raised from the event will go to the B.C. Cancer Foundation to support cancer research. England was diagnosed in November of 2009 with a rare blood cancer called Light Chain Deposition Disease. After she discovered her protein levels were unusually high, further tests by a kidney specialist determined that she had the rare cancer. She now has a tattoo that says “Live Life,” a reminder she takes to heart after the team of oncologists that treated her

The chemotherapy treatment that was given to her has left both her kidneys working at only half-capacity. “At some point in my lifetime [the doctors] say I will be on dialysis as well, said England. “My goal now is to get as much knowledge on it and maybe they can extend it so that it’s not a year from now that I’m on dialysis, maybe it’s five or 10.” England doesn’t want to let the disease she has, and its effects, bring her down and hopes that the money raised will one day make it easier for those who are diagnosed with cancer. England and four of her
friends make up Team F.A.C.T, which stands for Fighting Against Cancer Together. They each have to raise $2,500 to participate in the ride. So far, England has raised $625, and she believes that with a little more time, her goal will be reached. Team F.A.C.T will be holding a beverage fundraiser night at The Fox’s Reach Pub and Grill in Maple Ridge on May 7. The Chilliwack Hospital Auxiliary’s history is now in book form thanks to Maple Ridge writer Andrea Lister. Commitment to Caring: Chilliwack Hospital Auxiliary’s 100 Years, 1911-2011 is the story of the women who have supported Chilliwack General Hospital over the past century with their volunteering and fundraising. Lister took on the project of gathering the historical information for the book after discovering she was the descendant of one of the auxiliary members. As the editor of British Columbia History, the journal of the British Columbia Historical Federation, and web designer for the Maple Ridge Museum and Community Archives website, Lister’s spare time was often used finishing the book. She said she spent a lot of time scrolling through microfilm to find information and also enlisted help from family and friends. “I would send [people] to look for things for me,” said Lister. “If there was something I needed to know, I would say, ‘Can you go [to a certain place] and get this for me?’” Lister said her goal with the book was to show how hard-working the women of the Chilliwack Hospital Auxiliary were and to “make the characters come alive.” Lister noted she is also interested in writing a book on the history of Maple Ridge when she has more time. Filmmakers come to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows from all corners of the world to take advantage of the natural beauty and diverse surroundings. Kenneth Barr is jumping on that bandwagon. He has been in the industry for more than 20 years, and after working his way through as an actor to writer, producer, director, he started IDIOM Films in 1999. Now he has brought his team, his talent, and his vision to Maple Ridge to film his latest short film Lyrics to Dying Rebirth. This is the sixth official film under IDIOM’s moniker and the first in the Vancouver area. Barr said he could not be more impressed with the community, especially the access to locations and welcoming feel. “Sometimes cities that have acclimatized to filming are not necessarily filmfriendly,” he said. “I have to say, everybody in Maple Ridge that I’ve spoken to has been nothing but helpful. Even businesses are just asking how they can help,” he added.
Local resident Gary Grigg will be acting in the movie, and Barr said Grigg was the catalyst for bringing the production to Maple Ridge. “It’s really coming together at Gary’s insistence that Maple Ridge is the place to be,” said Barr. “Gary is a just a real advocate for the community.” The production started shooting on April 1 and was scheduled to wrap up on April 10. They were shooting at Davidson’s Pool, in our ample green spaces, and in and around the waterfront industrial areas in Hammond. “It has a real kind of New Jersey flavour to it,” said Barr. “You have these spots in and around the city that are just gorgeous.” He could not say enough about the welcoming aspect of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and stressed he is trying to make this production as local as possible. “Maple Ridge is very film friendly,” he added. “I’m just glad to be [here] and have a community that’s behind us.” Lyrics to Dying Rebirth is being used as a promotional film for the feature Lyrics to Dying Onslaught. It takes a year to make a quilt, but the Ridge Meadows Quilters Guild make time throughout the 12 months so they can raffle it off and give the proceeds to a local charity. In 2010, they raised $1,362.40 and donated the money to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. “We all make squares,” said member Missy McLeod, “and then we get together and hand stitch [the quilt].” Each quilt goes through a two-year cycle, McLeod said. It takes about a year to make and is raffled off six months after it is finished. “It takes a lot of time,” she said.

McLeod grew up quilting, and she enjoys the social aspect of it. “A quilting bee hasn’t changed much,” she said. “It’s always been a group of women getting together socially to make something.” In 2010, Lynn Leslie of Port Coquitlam won the quilt in a raffle without seeing it. That matters little to those who love what a quilt represents. “It’s like being wrapped in a hug,” said McLeod.

Carrisa Dean wants to make a difference in other peoples’ lives. The young PMSS student is starting off with a very ambitious project — she’s organizing a fashion show to benefit BC Children’s Hospital. But this is no ordinary fashion show. All the models are currently patients at the hospital and range from four to 17 years in age. “The group of kids that I’ve got are absolutely amazing,” she said. “These kids have gone through so much that some people never go through in their life.” They will be wearing three outfits, one for spring, one formal evening outfit and one ‘personality’

outfit, which Dean said can be anything that lets their individuality shine. She said she is touched by them and by the generosity of individuals and businesses who have provided everything needed for the event. The show will be held at the Holiday Inn on Howe Street, which has donated two rooms for the evening. Sears on Robson is donating the clothes, and three entertainers have donated their time for the show — Marion Weston, Emily Taylor Adams and Sean Thomas. The young event planner has also received many raffle prizes, including a Whistler getaway, PNE prize pack and BC Lions tickets. “My goal was to raise $5,000,” Dean said, “and I’ve already raised $3,000 and I haven’t even started selling tickets yet.” While many might look at Dean as an inspiration, hers is her grandfather who passed away almost
two years ago. “He would do anything for anybody. It made me think I want to do something to be like him,” she said. Dean has spent a lot of time at BC Children’s Hospital in her young life, because she has a rare form of scoliosis and has to go for MRIs and X-rays every six months. Despite having to quit sports and manage her pain without medication, Dean does not want to focus on her troubles. “When you see a child that has gone through so much worse,” she said, “when I see them I’m like ‘I can’t even tell you about mine’,” she said. The fashion show, Show of Styles, Kids with Smiles, will be on April 23, with doors at 5:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Howe Street. A test of strength on two wheels
Riders, volunteers, and spectators braved the miserable weather on Sunday for the second-annual Barry’s Roubaix cycling race.
It was a race that separated the weak from the strong. On Sunday, cyclists came from all over to take part in Barry’s Roubaix, and the course and tough competition, coupled with the pouring rain, tested the athletes every step of the way. “People were dropping like flies out there,” said Barry Lyster, organizer and owner of Local Ridge Bike shop, commenting on the majority of racers who abandoned the race when the relentless cold rain and wind overcame them. “I don’t blame them one bit,” he added. “If it was me racing, I’d still be out there lying in a ditch somewhere.” Lyster, who stated in the weeks leading up to the event that he hoped for nasty conditions to make the race “truly epic”, now knows he should have been careful what he wished for. His vision was to make his race similar to the historic Paris Roubaix Spring Classic cycling race that was held on the same day in France, and featured the best cyclists in the world. Traditionally, the Paris Roubaix is known for its wretched weather, said Lyster, but ironically, this year the weather in Europe was sunny and mild for the race. Folks in Pitt Meadows were not so lucky on Sunday. Only 15 of 54 men entered in the category 1/2 race finished the 110-km race, shortened by 10-km from the original 120-km, “more in consideration of the valiant volunteers standing in the cold downpour than of the racers who chose to subject themselves to the misery,” said
Lyster. “The weather wreaked havoc on not only the riders, but the brave, steadfast volunteers as well,” he said. “Unlike the riders, they did not have the option to stop.” The cyclists however not only had the rain and cold to contend with, but also a four-km section of gravel on the 10-km course that they faced each lap. Lyster commented that perhaps the toughest riders of the day were the winners of the featured events – the category 1/2 men’s and women’s races. Curtis Deardon, (Team Garneau Evolution), took the men’s win in a two-man breakaway with teammate Tim Abercrombie, (Team Garneau Evolution), in a time of three hours, 17 minutes, and 52 seconds. Adam Thuss, (Trek Red Truck Racing), finished third, trailing by about two-anda-half minutes. On the women’s side, the six-strong Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ squad controlled most of the 90-km race to take first and third places, courtesy of Jasmin Glaesser and Jessica Hannah, said Lyster. Denise Ramsden, (Team JuvedermSpecialized-Mazda), snatched up second spot to foil the Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ podium sweep, he added. McLURE Jean Aug. 28, 1919 – Apr. 2, 2011 Jean passed away peacefully at the age of 91 at Langley Memorial Hospital. Jean was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1919, the youngest of 6 children. She moved with her family to Vancouver in 1938. It was here that she met and married her loving, devoted husband, Frank (deceased in 1998). They moved to Maple Ridge in 1963 to raise their four children, Rob (Norma), Maureen (Glen), Jerry (Louise), and Neil (Helvi). Mom had a youthful spirit and a great sense of humour. She loved spending time with her family and was very proud of her grandchildren, Peter, Hollie (Bernie), Brad (Brenda), Tanya (Kevin), Jaime (Chris), Sadie (Mark), Jesse (Brenda), Cody (Christina), Clayton (Hallie), Bobbi (Brent), and her 12 great grandchildren. The McLure household was always filled with visiting family, friends, love, laughter and mom’s fresh baked goodies. There was always room for one more at the dinner table. “Just throw on a few more potatoes”, mom would say. Mom was an extraordinary person who loved to garden and knit, creating beautiful sweaters and her infamous slippers. She always had a jigsaw puzzle on the go. She enjoyed having coffee with her friends and hearing the latest news. Any occasion was worth celebrating with a family get together and one of mom’s desserts. Mom taught us all to face adversity with a sense of humour and to always put family first. She showered her family and friends with unconditional love. She will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to know and love her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favourite charity. There will be a celebration of life for Jean at a later date.
