Approximately 4,000 ticket holders hoping to watch snowboard cross today and tomorrow will be turned away from Cypress Mountain. Heavy rains have washed the snow away from the general admission standing area, according to VANOC, leaving it unsafe for spectators. The cancellation will not affect anyone holding a ticket for the grandstand seating during snowboard cross, or anyone with a ticket for other events at Cypress. The $50 tickets will be refunded, according to the release.

balldritt@nsnews.com alexandre bilodeau became an instant national hero sunday night when he ended canada’s 34-year quest for an olympic gold medal on home soil. the men’s mogul skier needed fewer than 30 seconds at cypress mountain to claim his gold-edged spot in the history books. bilodeau, a 22-year-old from rosemère, Que., overcame canadian-born australian and reigning olympic champion dale begg-smith, who won silver, and bryon wilson of the united states, who placed third. canadians Vincent marquis and Pierre-alexandre rousseau placed fourth and fifth, and maxime Gingras finished in 11th place. bilodeau produced a demanding back double full flip on his first jump and a soaring back puck for his second, which

punctuated a 23.17-second run, the fastest of the podium finishers and the second-fastest overall. silver medallist begg-smith was heavily tipped to retain his

blindsay@nsnews.com The north shore ravens bantam girls’ hockey team spent the first full day of olympic competition in unforgettable style — watching the canadian women’s hockey team win its first game and then meeting a women’s hockey legend. the ravens won a draw organized by samsun electronics to meet canadian team captain hayley wickenheiser and watch canada trounce the competition in the first hockey match-up of the Games from canada hockey Place in downtown Vancouver. ravens goalie and north Vancouver resident Kailynn snelgrove, age 15, said that it was a great day for the 15 young hockey players. “it was a lot of fun. we got pictures and autographs from hayley,” she said. the girls watched the canadian women hammer slovakia by a score of 18-0 — a record for most goals scored in olympic women’s hockey. “it was a lot of fun, and the seats that we had were very nice,” snelgrove said. “it was a really good game to get to see.” she said it was hard to pick a favourite moment in the day. “most of the game was the best, but being able to cheer for canada and have them break the record was amazing.” the team found out tuesday they’d been selected from teams who registered early for a tournament scheduled for burnaby in april. “i was super, super excited,” snelgrove said of her reaction when she learned she’d get to meet wickenheiser. on sunday afternoon, snelgrove was back out on the ice practising with the rest of the ravens, but she said she planned to be glued to the television over the next two weeks as the canadian hockey teams take to the rink. “i’ll be following all the hockey,” snelgrove said, adding that her expectations for the canadian men’s and women’s hockey teams are “high, very high.” she’s also lucky enough to have tickets to watch one more hockey game, as the swedish and slovakian women’s teams face off on monday night.

news

jseyd@nsnews.com about 1,000 hardy fans lined up for the grouse Mountain sky ride in the wee hours of Friday morning for a rare chance to become part of the studio audience as one of north america’s toprated morning news shows began broadcasting live from north Vancouver. oh, and also, perhaps, to catch a glimpse of Vancouver-

born heartthrob michael bublé, one of the featured guests on Today’s first olympic broadcast from the top of Grouse. north Vancouver friends andrea nelson-lee and christina duncan made it to the line-up for the tram ride at the base of Grouse at about 2:30 a.m. to find several hundred fans already there — some of whom had camped out all night for the chance to

take part in the taping. “the core group of people were screaming fans for michael bublé,” said nelsonlee, who managed to make it in to the chalet to become part of the audience. “we were within six or eight feet of him.” in contrast to the lack of snow that’s plagued Vancouver venues like cypress over the past month, at the top of Grouse, “it was nice and snowy. it was very

picturesque,” said nelson-lee. “Grouse mountain looked gorgeous.” nelson-lee said she was impressed with the tV show, which began taping at 4 a.m. in time to catch viewers at 7 a.m. in their key eastern north american market. among those featured along with bublé and u.s. olympic hopefuls was b.c. with parking increasingly scarce throughout the Lower Mainland during olympic festivities, even in expanded park-andride lots, TransLink is encouraging commuters to buddy up and use the rideshare program. drivers and passengers willing to shoulder some of the cost can sign up to participate on www.ride-share. com. the website matches people looking for rides and vehicles with available seats. details on timing, routes, and cost-sharing are determined by the vehicle drivers and their new passengers. translink is also suggesting the program could be useful for ticket-holders when olympic bus network buses leave transit hubs for events at whistler and cypress mountain at times when translink services aren’t running. according to translink, which supports the rideshare program, more than 1,500 people in metro Vancouver use the program every day. ride-share is operated by the jack bell Foundation, and also operates a fleet of vehicles used to provide a public vanpool program. Vanpool participants pay costs according to the number of kilometres travelled each month. — Bethany Lindsay

Gordon campbell and celebrity chef daniel boulud. as part of their olympic kick-off, today show hosts also made a point of showing off Grouse’s Peak chalet, which has become Today’s broadcast centre, along with interaction with outdoor crowds at the skating ring and bonfire. today’s guests included k.d. lang and wayne Gretzky. another person who couldn’t be happier with the inaugural broadcast was chris dagenais, director of communications for Grouse mountain resort. dagenais said getting the Today Show to broadcast from Grouse has been a goal he’s been pursuing for about five years. “it was a huge, huge coup for us,” he said. dagenais said a big part of Grouse’s appeal for the show was, “they didn’t want to be in an urban centre. they wanted to be in the heart of winter.” Getting the show’s equipment and setting up a studio at the top of the mountain has been a huge undertaking leading up to the olympics, with thousands and thousands of pounds of gear getting moved up in the sky ride in the past month. today, the Peak chalet is “a huge network of wires and cameras and rigging,” said dagenais, and massive lights flood the outside areas. “it looks like something big is happening.” Today, the top-rated u.s. morning news show, has a viewership of between two and five million.

women were well back from czech gold medallist martina sablikova, who set a track record and finished more than two seconds clear of beckert. Groves looked to be on pace to win silver, but faded in the final three laps and was passed by beckert in the final strides of their contest. team canada flagbearer clara hughes placed fifth with a time of four minutes, 6.01 seconds. cindy Klassen, a 30year-old speed skating veteran and canada’s most decorated olympian, stormed off the line to vocal crowd approval, but was clearly struggling near the end and placed 14th. Klassen recently underwent surgery on both knees. Germany dominated men’s luge, with Felix loch claiming gold and teammate david moeller winning silver. defending olympic champion armin Zoeggeler won bronze for italy. samuel edney produced canada’s best-ever showing with a seventh-place finish. jeff christie placed 14th and ian cockerline came 20th. Georgian luger levan Gureshidze did not compete. France won a pair of gold medals: Vincent jay in men’s 10-kilometre sprint biathlon, and jason lamy chappuis in men’s nordic combined. canada’s jean Phillippe leguellec placed sixth in sprint biathlon.

olympic title, much to the chagrin of canadian ski fans. the 25-year-old was born and raised in west Vancouver and began his career competing for the canadian team. but the canadian Freestyle ski association objected to begg-smith scheduling training around the demands of his successful internet business. the two sides couldn’t reach a compromise, and begg-smith decamped to the australian squad, who didn’t object to his multitasking. a man of few words, begg-smith has since become a self-made multimillionaire.

the north shore product turned self-made aussie placed fourth in qualifying, something of a disappointment for a man widely regarded as the best mogul skier in the world. his final run was technically precise, but slower and less ambitious than bilodeau’s. bilodeau first made a splash in 2006, appearing at the turin olympics as an 18-year-old and later becoming the youngest person ever to win a world cup moguls event. among the ecstatic crowd at cypress mountain was bilodeau’s older brother Frederic, who lives with cerebral palsy. before the event, bilodeau vowed to have his brother join him at the podium if he won a medal.

Why I am … supporting my daughter, snowboarder Maëlle Ricker, in her Olympic Games endeavour Because this is her dream. She just loves the outdoors and snowboarding and I truly support a pursuit that she feels so deeply about. People ask me all the time if I worry about my daughter when she’s racing. Sure, I worry at times. But to be good you have to live on the edge and Maëlle definitely does that. DR . NANCY RICKER
