Man drowns after fall into Howe Sound James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
AN unidentified man has died after falling into the ocean while apparently late-night crab fishing near Horseshoe Bay.
Investigators believe the victim, who appeared to be in his 40s or 50s, was preparing to set a trap at a boat launch near Montizambert Creek on Howe Sound just before midnight Tuesday when he slipped and tumbled into the water. Wind and high waves apparently drove the man, who was not wearing a life-jacket, away from shore and to the south. When residents of nearby Sunset Beach heard his calls for help, they phoned 9-1-1. A short time later, however, they reported the calls had stopped. West Vancouver’s Coast Guard Auxiliary unit arrived on scene about half an hour later, and found the man floating just below the surface. They hauled him on board and began CPR, soon joined by a team from a Coast Guard cutter who used a defibrillator, but they were unable to revive him. The team transported the man to a waiting ambulance at Horseshoe Bay, where paramedics continued to work on him, but he was later pronounced dead. Squamish RCMP are investigating the incident. They found what appear to be the man’s effects, including a crab trap, at the boat launch about 1.5 kilometres from where he was retrieved. Investigators believe they know his identity, but they have not yet confirmed it or notified next of kin.

Chlorine plant leak sends 4 to LGH
James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
A chlorine leak at North Vancouver’s Canexus plant sent four men to hospital Wednesday. Emergency crews were called to the Maplewood facility on Amherst Avenue at about 5:30 a.m. after a mixture of chlorine and caustic soda — both of which are involved in the production of bleach — escaped from an outdoor scrubbing tank. Four contractors performing repairs on a neighbouring tank breathed in the fumes, and at least one of them was seriously affected. Police, fire crews and paramedics arrived a few minutes later
Canexus closed Wednesday to conduct an on-site investigation
to find the leak had been contained and that on-site medical and rescue personnel were already decontaminating the victims. A woman who was in a vehicle nearby was initially thought to have been exposed as well, but was later deemed to be OK, according to firefighters. The four exposed workers were taken to Lions Gate Hospital for treatment. Three were released within a few hours, while the fourth — and most seriously affected — was kept for observation,
according to plant manager Rick Denton. None of the workers’ injuries were life-threatening, he said, and the final victim was expected to be released soon. Early media reports that there had been an explosion at the facility had been incorrect, said Denton. Only workers in the immediate vicinity had been affected, and the facility’s emergency system had contained the leak immediately, he added. The plant remained closed Wednesday while Canexus conducted an investigation. At this point, it’s still not clear what caused the mishap or how much of the chemical escaped, said Denton. “We use sensors around the site, and we use a very complicated See No page 3

3D funds for Capilano University Federal grant of almost $1M adds new technology to film centre Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
A federal grant of nearly $1 million will help Capilano University’s School of Motion Picture Arts stay on cutting edge of movie-making technology as it trains students for a future in B.C.’s booming film industry. The recently-announced grant of $969,000 from Western Economic Diversification Canada will be used for new 3D film equipment — including cameras, editing and post-production equipment — for the program’s new Nat and Flora Bosa Centre for Film and Animation, set to open in July. These days, “a significant amount of (film and television work) is being produced in 3D,” said Bill Thumm, director of the school. Today’s digital filming has made 3D significantly more sophisticated than it was in the past, said Thumm, who predicts most big scope action movies, special effects films and horror movies will be filmed in 3D from now on. The movie Avatar piqued the public’s interest in 3D, and, last year, Final Destination 3 became among the first movies filmed in 3D on the North Shore, said Thumm. Industry professionals expect that trend to continue, he said, adding DreamWorks studios in L.A. has announced all of its animated films will be in 3D from now on. In addition to training its own students, Capilano University also plans to make the 3D equipment available to industry professionals who need to upgrade their skills. The new Bosa Centre — which will include a 200-seat highdefinition/3D theatre, sound mixing and recording studios, an 8,000-square-foot sound stage, plus editing, visual effects, digital and commercial animation labs — has been funded by a $6 million donation from the Bosa family plus a $30.2 million combined federal and provincial grant. About 250 students are registered in Capilano University’s degree program in Motion Picture Arts. In addition to specialized programs in costuming, cinematography and documentary filmmaking, the school is also launching a new program in digital visual effects — another fast-growing area of the movie business. In most action movies, “a large chunk of what you see is going to be digital visual effects,” said Thumm. “Vancouver is becoming more and more known as a centre for that.” See B.C. page 5

Longtime WV politician Allan Williams dies
Tessa Holloway
tholloway@nsnews.com
ALLAN Williams, West Vancouver’s “elder statesman” and former B.C. attorney general, has died at 88. The former MLA and councillor, who only retired from politics in 2002, passed away Monday following a long illness, his family told the North Shore News. He leaves behind him a legacy that includes the new West Vancouver and Gleneagles community centres. “He was certainly the elder statesmen at the local level in West Van,” said Mayor Pam Goldsmith-Jones, who was elected to council the same year that Williams retired. “He was a visionary with regards to his leadership on our recreation facilities plan.” Still, Williams will likely be remembered across the province. Born in the small community of Glenavon, Sask., Williams moved to Vancouver to attend high school and then, after a stint in the Royal
Allan Williams Canadian Air Force, studied law at UBC. He was first elected West Vancouver Parks and Recreation Commissioner in 1959, before moving on to council in 1966 and then Liberal MLA in 1967. Current Coun. Bill Soprovich, who during the 1969 election had his barber shop next door to Williams’ campaign offices, used to cut his children’s hair in between volunteering for Williams. During the 1969 election

he watched then-premier W.A.C Bennett pull up outside the shop in a limousine for a meeting with Williams. “Hewasaverysharp-minded man. He knew how to search right to the problem. A great analytical mind and very well respected,” said Soprovich. In 1975, Williams crossed the floor to the Social Credit Party and served as labour minister, attorney general and minister responsible for native affairs. As attorney general, Williams made the deal that saw $100,000 given to the family of convicted serial killer Clifford Olsen in exchange for information locating the bodies of his 11 victims. In 1983, Williams left provincial politics, but 10 years later ran for councillor in West Vancouver, winning three terms before retiring in 2002. It was there he left his mark on West Vancouver, playing an instrumental role in drafting the recreation facilities master plan, which saw the ice arena and swimming pool replaced, and new community centres built. “There was about $60
million plus in recreation renewal that really was part of his legacy,” said Soprovich, who worked on council with him during that time, and describes Williams as a mentor. While many who knew him described Williams as a gentleman, former West Vancouver mayor Ron Wood said he “didn’t suffer fools gladly,” either. “One line that kind of sticks in my mind there was a fellow
who was complaining he was going to lose his view . . . and he told this gentleman that a view is a privilege, it is not a right,” said Wood. “And that stopped the conversation right there, because you can’t argue with that.” Williams is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie, his three children, Louis, Leslie and Jane, nine grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, Virginia.
The pipe in dispute included more than one kilometre of a large Seymour watermain in the District of North Vancouver. The decision follows a 25day civil trial in B.C. Supreme Court last year. The water authority signed contracts with North American Pipe and Steel to supply pipes for two large water projects in Burnaby and North Vancouver in 2005. The pipes, manufactured in Korea, included 1.7 kilometres of pipe with a fivefoot diameter for the Burnaby project and more than a kilometer of seven-footwide pipe for the Seymour project. The GVWD also hired Moody International to oversee and inspect the pipes during the manufacturing process. But later, the regional government refused to pay the $3.67 million bill for the pipes, saying both companies breached their contracts because the coating on the pipes was defective. The companies then sued the government, arguing that tests done on the pipes at the mill where they were made failed to find widespread problems. They also argued any problem with the pipes was the result of specifications set by the water authority, which differed from usual standards. Last month, B.C. Supreme See Judge page 5
No risk to residents, spokesman From page 1 program to determine quantities, so we are working to evaluate that,” he said. “I would think by the middle of next week we should have answers.” The incident posed no danger to residents, added Denton. “We have a very solid 53-year track record of operating safely within the community, and we’ll continue to do that,” he said. “This is a very localized impact.” The plant has seen “minor inhalation incidents” in the past, said Denton, but none has ever involved life-threatening injuries. The Canexus plant has been a focus of
controversy since at least the early 1980s. In a 2007 letter to Port Metro Vancouver, District of North Vancouver council formally opposed its continued operation, saying it was a hazard both to public safety and the environment. Councillors voiced concerns again in 2009, when the company announced plans to expand chlorine shipments by more than 40,000 tonnes annually. Kennedy, a 15-year veteran of the fire service, confirmed crews had responded to minor leaks at the site in the past, but that this was the first time to his knowledge the gas had actually injured someone. Denton said the company will release more information once its investigation is complete.

Painter leaves B.C. movie marketing gets $510K unwanted memento From page 3
Family disturbed by camera images
Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
A 26-year-old housepainter from Langley has been put on 30 months probation after admitting he snuck into a nanny’s suite in a West Vancouver home and filmed himself masturbating with her camera. Stephen Jacob Faulkner later told police he thought the woman had been flirting with him and “I just took it to a whole other level.” When the nanny returned to the home and found the video on her camera, she was shocked and went to police. A judge handed the probation and a suspended sentence to Faulkner on Monday after he pleaded guilty in North Vancouver provincial court to being unlawfully in a dwelling. Crown counsel Linda Ostry said Faulkner was part of a painting crew hired to paint the exterior of a West Vancouver home last August while the family who lived there was away. Windows and doors were left unlocked so the trim could be painted, she said, but no permission was given for the painters to go inside the home. When the family returned home, the nanny was packing for a trip and found her camera wasn’t in her purse, where it usually was, but was in a desk drawer instead. She also noticed it had been left on “video” mode, said Ostry. When she played back the video, the woman was shocked and recognized Faulkner immediately as part of the house-painting crew. Ostry added the whole family was “very disturbed” by the incident. Faulkner spoke to police soon after, telling them “I have a sexual problem that I’m trying to deal with,” and acknowledging his actions were “not something that’s normal.” He added he was very ashamed of what he’d done. Faulkner was fired from the painting company and his final paycheque was used to buy the nanny a new camera and new bedding. “She did not want the camera back,” said Ostry. “She did not want to touch it again.” Faulkner’s lawyer Craig Sicotte told the judge his client wanted to erase the video after he made it, but couldn’t figure out how to do that. The judge ordered Faulkner to take counselling while on probation. She also banned him from possession of pornography and from sending or posting any sexually explicit material on any electronic media.

Along with the grant to Capilano University, Western Economic Diversification Canada also announced a federal grant of $510,000 to the industry association for a three-year marketing strategy aimed at attracting movie projects to B.C. Peter Leitch, chairman of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of B.C. head of North Shore Studios, said that will be aimed at exploring markets in Hong Kong, India and Europe as well as partnering with more independent film companies in L.A.
Judge blames GVWD specs From page 3
SKILLED NEGOTIATOR
Court Justice Laura Gerow agreed with the companies, noting that on a balance of probabilities, the water authority hadn’t proven there were widespread failures in the pipes that would render them defective and that any problems had most likely been caused by the GVWD’s specifications. The judge noted the water authority developed the specifications without any input from the contractor. She ordered the water authority to pay North American Pipe & Steel $3.9 million, including costs for storage of the pipes and costs for testing and repairing them to the GVWD’s satisfaction.

Despite the high Canadian dollar, most of the local film studios are “doing relatively well right now” with U.S.-based TV productions, said Leitch. “Most of the studios are full.” Leitch said experienced crews, film-friendly communities and great shooting locations are part of what’s attracting productions to B.C. The province is now considered among the top three film production centres in North America, after Los Angeles and New York, and the industry injects about $1.2 billion into the provincial economy each year. Game changer A
S the rhetoric heats up around the province’s proposed megacasino in downtown Vancouver, critics have once again, and rightly, raised the spectre of money laundering. Among the many problems associated with casinos, it seems strange that this one hasn’t been solved. In January, CBC reported a suspicious spike in large cash transactions at two Lower Mainland facilities, with 90 incidents in which an average of $90,000 was exchanged at one time for chips. No name given; no questions asked. While we don’t know for sure what these anonymous individuals were up to, it’s hard to believe that none of those transactions was an attempt to hide dirty money. Criminal activity of one kind or another has been associated with casinos
since their inception; that transactions of this nature take place at facilities in the Lower Mainland is hardly a surprise. What’s startling is that the province has done nothing about it. In the electronic age, large cash transactions are unnecessary. While it may not eliminate the practice entirely, changing the rules to require any customer buying chips in numbers above a certain cap to use debit and present identification would certainly throw up a significant obstacle. And yet this move doesn’t seem ever to have been seriously entertained by those who oversee casinos. Our leaders in Victoria are understandably thirsty for gaming revenue, but they also purport to be tough on crime. Why not use simple, available technology to address both?
The eagles and Christy Clark have landed
LET us get our priorities right. The biggest story since we last met in this space is, by far, eagles. What were you expecting? Surely not B.C. politics. Bald eagles have inhabited this coast for countless centuries. No current political leader will be around in 20 years. We will have had two premiers named Clark, two named Bennett, three contenders at the same B.C. Liberal leadership with the first name Gordon, and by 2031 it will all be a fuzzy matter in most minds and pleasantly absent in the rest. Only I will be here to instruct your grandchildren. And I pray the magnificent bald eagles will still measure our ragged coastline with their magnificent wingspread, and mock the brevity of a man’s life and the humility of mankind’s place in the universe. David Hancock is an eagle guy. He said a world-record 7,200 were counted in midDecember in the Chehalis River area and 10 days later,
This Just In
Trevor Lautens having dined on insufficient chum salmon corpses, only 345. The healthy ones flew elsewhere. Those left are starving. Some are too weak to fly. Some are poisoned eating landfill garbage. One prays — again — that Hancock’s a bit of an alarmist. But Bev Day of OWL, the Orphan Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, in Ladner, cites supportive figures in a report by the Vancouver Sun’s Kim Pemberton. Some rescued by OWL were injured in the eagle equivalent of food riots.

Wringing hands and then passing on to the next disaster story won’t help. Governments — provincial, federal: Take action. Fast. Create eagle food banks. That rings of catchy mediaspeak. But by any name, feed areas should be selected in several eagle habitats by our environment or fish and game ministries. Fish offal isn’t lacking. Yes, fish processors utilize every bit of fish for pet food, so offer a premium price. Taxpayers fund far more dubious initiatives. The other day the two eagles that have long nested in a nearby tree, though they disappointingly missed last year, returned and settled in, to much rejoicing in this house. Can you put a price on the enhanced real estate value of living in such a neighbourhood — yes, on West Vancouver’s Marine Drive, Vancouver’s skyline within view? ••• The ordinary (meaning, these days, cynical) citizen wonders how half a dozen people clawing for the brassplated ring of party leader can
smile and join hands while the blood is still fresh and sticky on the floor. Easy. ABC (Anybody But Christy) Clark, and the OBC (Old Boys Club), headed by Kevin Falcon, George Abbott and Mike de Jong, need each other. As Ben Franklin nicely put it, they better hang together or they’ll hang separately. They can make a hobby of privately hating each other but their day job requires a show of mutual civility. Furthermore, The Interests will hugely encourage all concerned to be agreeable. Not to forget that politics is half-way to show biz. Hamlet tonight, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Victoria tomorrow. If Clark puts a foot wrong — into a really squishy cow pie — her gift for smiling and talking at the same time will be of little avail, and a sauve qui peut race to the exits is at least remotely possible. ••• The North Shore’s Liberal MLAs all bet on the wrong horse — Joan McIntyre
backing Falcon, Naomi Yamamoto, Jane Thornthwaite and Ralph Sultan plumping for Abbott. No cashable IOUs there. Upbeat former pollster McIntyre noted: “The backing of MLAs can/does have significant influence. For example, Kevin Falcon did very well in the ridings where he had MLA support — e.g. Prince George and Richmond. Similar patterns exist for George Abbott in pockets of support, primarily outside the Lower Mainland. “On the North Shore there is an interesting pattern. I am very proud of our Kevin Falcon ‘ground’ campaign. We carried both West Van ridings, particularly (McIntyre’s own) Sea to Sky with 44 per cent on the first ballot, and all but Lonsdale on the final ballot.” Thornthwaite enthused: “Christy Clark struck a chord with people for change and I wholeheartedly agree. Personally, I look forward to meeting with her soon to discuss the priorities that have been raised by people in North
Vancouver-Seymour, including transportation, health and education issues.” Sultan noted that in fine democratic tradition “the people have spoken and the caucus is rallying around Christy Clark in the best interests of British Columbians.” Sultan praised all six in the competition but “Clark had a team with the best organizational and communications skills.” Right, masterminded by slick wire-puller Patrick Kinsella. I didn’t like the cut of Kinsella’s jib when we met when I was a tiny cog in the Bill Bennett government’s wheel 30 years ago, and time hasn’t improved my affections. ••• Was that really socialism’s foremost capitalist, Bob Williams, on the CTV panel on convention day? The feared lean-and-hungry-look New Democrat with a shrewd eye for real estate investments who terrified the forest industry with his Swedish-derived ideas? He’s, um, visibly prospered. tlautens@telus.net

Clark’s support widespread
THE B.C. Liberal party’s decision to adopt a weighted voting system for choosing their next leader was supposed to help candidates such as George Abbott, but the system showed the wide appeal of Christy Clark more than anything. Clark won the leadership by a narrow margin — 52 per cent versus 48 per cent — over Kevin Falcon, but a ridingby-riding analysis of the vote shows her victory was not quite as narrow as that result would indicate. The weighted voting system assigned every riding 100 points, which meant all ridings counted the same no matter how many party members voted in the riding. The 223 members in VancouverHastings had as much clout as the 3,210 members in SurreyNewton. One thing that is quickly apparent from look at a ridingby-riding breakdown is how well Clark did in NDP territory. On the final count, Clark won every NDP-held riding except two. In many cases, her lead over Falcon was substantial enough to give her almost twice the points from the riding as went to Falcon. She took almost 59 per cent of the points in NDP ridings, compared to Falcon’s 42 per
View from the Ledge Keith Baldrey
cent. That accounted for almost half of her overall point total. She also beat Falcon in the suburbs of Metro Vancouver (eight ridings to six on the final count), the Interior and North (12 to eight), Vancouver (eight to three), Surrey (five to three) and Vancouver Island (12 to two). She even narrowly took more ridings than Falcon in the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan. Clark also bested Falcon in ridings that saw large sign-ups of members. In ridings with more than 1,000 voters, she came out on top by a margin of seven to five over Falcon. Clark’s victory got an early push from the supporters of Mike de Jong, almost half of whom picked her as their second choice. On the final count, she got second-choice support from about one-third of those who backed George Abbott.
In other words, Clark’s support was fairly widespread (though not necessarily that deep) and not confined to one particular area of the province. There were only a couple of areas (the west side of Vancouver, the odd pocket in the Interior) where she failed to attract much support. The breadth of her support may bode well for her when she gets around to calling a general election. Clark’s victory explodes the myth that, among B.C. Liberal voters, she was strong only in urban or suburban regions. ••• Christy Clark’s main message during her successful campaign was her desire to bring real change to the B.C. Liberal government. So how does that translate into changes at the cabinet table? Because she had the support of only one MLA — Harry Bloy — Clark doesn’t really owe many people any favours. But the political reality of keeping her coalition party together means she must keep key supporters of rival Kevin Falcon in the fold. So don’t expect cabinet stalwarts such as Falcon, Rich Coleman, Pat Bell, Shirley Bond, Barry Penner or George Abbott to form an exodus from the head table. But I’m not so sure certain others — notably Kevin Krueger and perhaps Iain Black,

Murray Coell, Ida Chong, Randy Hawes, and even Colin Hansen — should feel totally secure in their posts. To demonstrate real change, Clark is going to have to bring in some new faces. And that means some current ministers have to pay the ultimate price. Her real challenge, however, is dealing with two independent MLAs — Bill Bennett and Blair Lekstrom — who left the B.C. Liberal caucus on unhappy terms. Clark has been criticized as being a threat to party unity and of being the kind of leader who could wreck the so-called free enterprise coalition. Bringing Bennett and Lekstrom back into caucus — perhaps not cabinet — would go a long way to show that maintaining party unity is indeed something she is capable of. The night of her leadership win, all the MLAs joined her on the stage in a show of at least public unity. Watching from the floor was Bennett, who seems ready to rejoin his colleagues. But he has to be invited back first –—and the new premier might want to think about asking her caucus to do just that. Keith.Baldrey@globalnews.ca Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global BC (Editor’s note: Since this column was written Blair Lekstrom has rejoined the Liberal caucus.)
Mailbox Leave the Lions Gate lions alone Dear Editor: Driving over the Lions Gate Bridge, I have become increasing irritated by the tacky-looking decorations that are placed around the necks of the lion sculptures. It reminds me of a similar incident in Toronto at the Eaton Centre when red ribbons were placed around the necks of Canada geese in Michael Snow’s sculpture Flight Stop during Christmas season. The sculptor sued the centre and won, the judge ruling that the sculptures integrity was “distorted, mutilated or otherwise modified” which was “to the prejudice of the honour or reputation of the author.” If the sculptor of the lions was still alive, I’m sure he would complain vigorously about the debasement of these noble creatures. Drunken louts have parents somewhere
An open letter to North Shore parents: Do you have children in the 17-21 age? Did they return home early Sunday morning? How about a tall, strong son with red hair and beard, likes to wear his black toque pushed back on his head, jaunty style? With a dark-haired friend with quite long hair? And a short black-haired friend with steel blue eyes? They were riders on the last night-bus back to North Vancouver. They got off at Lonsdale Avenue and 13th Street. Before they did, they wreaked their own drunken antics on their fellow riders. They held the bus up by keeping the door open. They forced other kids to miss the last bus ride home by refusing to crowd to the rear of the bus and laughing at those that begged them to consider otherwise. They uttered homophobic and racist crap. They littered spent liquor bottles. And finally they goaded other drunk girls to fight. By luck, this happened at the Quay stop, where

the bus driver, doing a thankless job, got out, and pulled the girls out by himself. Your red-haired son and his long-haired friends’ response: “Lets start another fight,” “F***ing rights, it’s the Fight Bus.” My friend and I were the only 40-somethings on the bus. We were on this 3 a.m. bus because for the last three hours we had seen bus after bus zoom by full after the Olympics celebration. No extras put on by TransLink. Remember snow was falling in abundance, the temperatures were below freezing, and kids got left behind until the morning service. I didn’t speak up. These kids were drunk and stronger than me. I was the only East Indian male on the bus. Last thing I want is to be a victim of violence. These are your kids, circa 2011, in North Vancouver, B.C. Stephen Sian, North Vancouver

INQUIRING REPORTER CHRISTY Clark will be sworn in as the province’s 35th premier later this month, replacing Gordon Campbell after 10 years in the province’s top job. The former radio host and Liberal cabinet minister from 2001 to 2005 was chosen to lead the governing B.C. Liberal Party in a leadership convention last weekend ahead of Surrey MLA Kevin Falcon. While only time will tell, we asked people what their first thoughts were on the new premier. Find us on Facebook and tell us what you think or add your comment to Inquiring Reporter at www.nsnews. com. — Tessa Holloway

Do you think Christy Clark is an improvement over Gordon Campbell?
Janet Van Rooyen West Vancouver I think she brings a whole new charisma and a whole new energy — a very positive energy. I was thrilled about how she never really attacked her fellow candidates during the campaign.

NV school district will no longer administer Jean Lee Trust Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
THE North Vancouver Board of Education has won the right to wash its hands of administering a 30-year-old scholarship after getting into an acrimonious court fight with the founders of the award. In a recent B.C. Supreme Court ruling, Justice Barry Davies ruled the school board had provided ample reasons why it shouldn’t be required to oversee Jean Lee Memorial Trust. Davies ruled the school board will be allowed to transfer money in the scholarship trust to the North Vancouver High School Education Foundation to administer instead, unless the founders come up with someone else to oversee the scholarship fund. The $5,500 trust was originally set up in 1980 by the Lee family, in honour of Jean Lee, who taught English at Handsworth secondary before dying of cancer. Under the original terms of the trust, the school board was to invest the money and hand out an annual award of either $500 or the interest earned from the trust every year — whichever amount was less. Because of high interest rates in the early 1980s, the founders “presumed the trust fund was growing substantially,” wrote Davies.
But by the early 1990s, that was no longer the case. In 1996, the school district told the family the fund would likely last only another seven to 10 years, although it was supposed to continue in perpetuity. Elaine Lee, Jean Lee’s daughter, learned annual scholarships had been awarded above the amount agreed on. The school district then asked the family to change the terms of the trust, allowing them to hand out a scholarship above the amount of interest earned or to hand it out less often, so that more money could accumulate in the account. The Lee family refused, and a court fight began. In the latest battle, the board asked to wash its hands of the trust, arguing the costs of maintaining the fund under the strict terms it was created under far exceeded any interest earned and any scholarship awarded. At today’s low interest rates, the trust earns less than $300 a year, the district argued. Also “due to the reality of high post-secondary education costs, the board does not generally award scholarships in amounts less than $500,” the board said. Board lawyers added the district has spent enough time and money on the issue, which is outside of its core mandate of educating students from kindergarten to Grade 12. If the money is transferred to the foundation, the foundation will hand out the scholarship on its own terms, which includes a minimum amount of $500. The foundation currently distributes 46 academic scholarships, bursaries and career-training scholarships to Grade 12 students in North Vancouver. Davies gave the Lee family until the end of April to come up with an alternate administrator for the trust.

Viewers snap photos, strike similar poses and consider the meaning behind China’s Yue Minjun’s sculptures, exhibited by the Vancouver Biennale, which has certainly
made its mark on the local landscape. The non-profit organization installs works by talented international artists at parks, beaches and plazas, intending to transform the city into an open-air museum. Building on the popularity of the Biennale and interested in forging even greater community connections, an inaugural program gives students, including those on the North Shore, an opportunity to respond to the works through the creation of their own. Starting in West Vancouver, students from five secondary schools will have their resulting pieces exhibited at the Ferry Building Gallery and West Vancouver Museum March 8-27 in a dual show. The Town Pants keep their options open

WHEN brothers Duane and Dave Keogh and Aaron Chapman started strumming Celtic melodies across the North Shore, they knew they had a winner — partly because the band was named after one.
The Town Pants, as they came to be known, was actually an Irish racehorse that Duane and Dave bet all their hard-earned money on — enough that, when he crossed the finish line in first place, they could afford two pints of Guinness instead of one. photo Adam PW Smith “We doubled our money, THE Town Pants are booked for a few pre-St. Patrick’s Day shows in the United States before returning home for a March 18 gig at the but we weren’t really big Commodore Ballroom. Bluesy Blessed takes an emotional journey
■ Lucinda Williams — Blessed (Lost Highway) Rating: 9 (out of 10) I’m always excited when there’s news of a new album from Lucinda Williams — the queen of hard times and country blues. Many of her songs are intensely personal and devastatingly raw, usually dealing with the open wounds of relationships gone wrong or childhood experiences causing the listener to ache as they’re relived in song. As a singer/songwriter, these subjects have always been Williams’ bread and butter. With her new album, Blessed, everyone will compare it to her brilliant 1998 Grammy Award-winning record, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, and Blessed doesn’t disappoint. A mix of bluesy, troubled ballads and harder-edged country rock, it opens with the gritty ”Buttercup,” followed by the sultry “Born to be Loved.” Williams deals with suicide in “Seeing Black” and in “Solidier’s Song,” simultaneously tells the story of a soldier and his family back home.
CD REVIEWS
“Worth it.” The Original Available in Brown and Black
“Kiss like your Kiss,” is incredibly touching in a way only Lucinda Williams can be, as is the memorial to a friend, “Copenhagen.” All songs run us, as listeners, through the emotional ringer. Williams’ voice sounds fantastic, her usual sweet gravelly southern drawl superbly captured on the recording. Her band sounds polished as well and is joined this time around by musicians Greg Leisz, Matthew Sweet and Elvis Costello. Blessed is a great musical journey and any Lucinda Williams fan would agree: the queen has returned. — Mike Wakefield
■ Young Galaxy — Shapeshifting (Paper Bag Records) Rating: 7 (out of 10) The sublime opening track on Young Galaxy’s Shapeshifting, “The Angels Are Surely Weeping,” is more than enough reason to check out the third studio album from Stephen Ramsay (vocals/guitar) and Catherine McCandless (vocals/keyboards). With the help of Swedish electronic producer Dan Lissvik, Young Galaxy, formerly of Vancouver but now based in Montreal, have reconfigured their dream pop sound to bring McCandless more up front. — John Goodman
That’s what people say. The only problem with Blundstone boots is that they never seem to wear out. Oh, people try. But after a few years of kicking the bejeez out of them, they’re more comfortable than ever and still going strong. Expensive? Nope, they get cheaper by the day.

headline a St. Patrick’s Day show. And if you’re hoping to get the full experience of the band, that’s the place to see it. Though they’ve released five albums, including two live albums, all band members insist that it’s still the live show they focus on most, and love to play. But that’s not to say the band’s five albums don’t have their fans. Their latest, Shore Leave, was recorded at North Vancouver’s Baker Street Studios and released in 2009 and has received a fair bit of radio play, though more in the U.S. than locally. The artwork was done by the band’s drummer, Mo Sherwood, but Aaron insists that any resemblance of the band members to the drunken sailors on the CD jacket is “just coincidence.” After the tour, the band is hoping to hit the recording studio again for another album, and from there simply follow the musical road wherever that takes them. As three best friends, they rarely tire of each other’s company and still have fun on the road. This is one horse that isn’t ready to retire, said Dave, no matter how many times he gets lead out to pasture. “Every time I roll over my ankle they try to take me for a walk in the woods,” he jokes, motioning to Chapman and his brother. “But I don’t go.”

LEGIONS of fans braved the snow last weekend to catch Heart at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Saturday night. Guitarist Nancy Wilson (above) and her sister Ann Wilson developed their sound on the Vancouver club scene back in the ’70s. They played most of their classic hits at the QE show which was the last night of the tour. By the end of the evening they had everybody singing along to “Dog and Butterfly.” See more photos at www.nsnews.com/entertainment.

on mounting Big Ideas: Responding to Public Art,” says Ruth Payne, visual arts co-ordinator of the Ferry Building Gallery. “The many pieces of public art in the city are an inspiration and offer a profound educational opportunity for students. We anticipate that gallery and museum visitors will see and enjoy a great variety of outstanding cutting-edge cross-media works by these talented students.” According to Katherine Tong, education program manager for the Vancouver Biennale, the West Vancouver exhibitions, featuring works by students from Collingwood, Mulgrave, Rockridge, Sentinel and West Vancouver, are the first in a series of shows. In April, an exhibition of North Vancouver students’ works (from Balmoral, Carson Graham, Bodwell and Argyle) will be held at CityScape Community Art Space, opening April 7 with a reception from 7-9 p.m. and will remain on display until April 23. Three exhibitions will also be in held in Vancouver in April. “Seeing the participation level and enthusiasm of the students and the work that has come out has been most rewarding,” says Tong, a West Vancouver resident. Big Ideas builds on past work completed by representatives of the Vancouver Biennale, having created a cross-curricular learning program inspired by the sculptures. “We thought we needed to have a creation piece, something that would leave a legacy for the Vancouver Biennale involving the community and so that’s how the idea came along that we would host a series of student exhibitions, taking
that learning concept and then providing an opportunity for the students to do creative crossmedia creation and be able to showcase it,” says Tong. A call for participation was sent out to local schools, which took the reins in terms of which of their students would participate and whose work would ultimately be exhibited. Some schools opted to organize field trips to view the sculptures, others encouraged their senior students to view them on their own time. “We think of it as taking you outside of the comfort of your four walls so you’re thinking out of the box,” says Tong, who visited all the participating West Vancouver schools over the last week. “The quality of work and the creativity is most impressive,” she says. Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend the exhibitions. For elementary school students, the shows offer a great opportunity for them to learn from senior students. “We hope that teachers would take their students through as a school tour and we’re offering programs,” says Tong. Groups will be entered into a draw for art supplies donated by Opus Framing and Art Supplies. They’re also running a contest for members of the general public. “The contest is to encourage people to visit at least three exhibition locations,” says Tong. Visitors will get stamped and entered into a draw for a variety of prizes, including an Apple iPad, iPod Shuffles, etc. “We want people to be aware that this is a series of events rather than one exhibit that happened at one location,” she says.

One of the leading artists in the field, David Downton, has collected samples from the past century in this lavish book. Downton makes it clear in his introduction that the book is not intended to be a comprehensive study of this art form. What he has done is chosen artists he loves and is inspired by and showcased their work. At the heart of this book is a love of drawing and the incredible talents on display show with

an economy of line what great drawing can be. Each of the artists are presented through a number of their works and a short essay on their lives. Trendsetters like J.C. Leyendecker, widely considered to be one of the first commercial artists, created a style of drawing that influenced many great illustrators. Through the years approaches have changed as have the choice of materials used but much of the essence has remained true to the sensibilities of dramatic, clean
lines. In the end it is all about the love of drawing and Downton has done the art form a service by the beautiful presentation in this book. — Terry Peters
Thrift Stores. According to a written statement, volunteers love to keep busy, but the stores are in dire need of gently used “treasures,” including clothing and accessories. The thrift stores are the major source of revenue to support the SOS Children’s Village B.C., which provides family-based care service for foster children and foster families. There is also an urgent need for volunteers in the organization’s three stores in Steveston, Kerrisdale and at

IT’S odd to reflect that Noel Coward’s delightful confection Blithe Spirit was written and performed at the height of the London blitz during the Second World War. Coward claims in his autobiography to have written it straight through in five days — he was on holiday at the time after a bomb had destroyed his office and apartment — and that only two lines were changed in rehearsal for what would turn out to be a record-setting West End run that lasted longer than the war. With death in London’s air and the possibility of death in every Brit’s mind, a plot that revolves around communicating with the dead seems like it should have been a turnoff. The only sound on a summer’s eve is bird song, not bombs. In fact the play’s title comes from Shelley’s poem To a Skylark — “Hail to thee, blithe Spirit! Bird thou never wert.” The guest of honour will be Madame Arcati, a clairvoyant who will organize a seance after dinner. What Madame Arcati does not realize is that Charles is looking for material for his next novel — “a few tricks of the trade” — and that he and his other guests,

Julie Crawford ■ The Adjustment Bureau. Directed by George Nolfi. Starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Rating: 7 (out of 10) If you’ve ever used the excuse “the devil made me do it” or blamed missing car keys on mischievous sprites, it may come as a surprise to learn that the people responsible are actually sharp-dressed men in fedoras. New York senate hopeful David Norris (Matt Damon) discovers this when he walks in just as agents are tweaking the political leanings of a coworker, who is catatonic and ignorant of the procedure. Having witnessed a scene few humans have ever seen, at least See Plot page 30

Plot takes backseat to relationship
From page 29
outside the walls of a rubber room, David is faced with keeping the secret forever or having his entire life erased. It should have been a simple decision. But David just met the girl of his dreams, a dancer named Elise (Emily Blunt), and then pure chance throws her in his path again. That’s fate, isn’t it? However, after glancing at David’s future in a leather-bound book, the agents insist that Elise isn’t in it. So men in suits do rule the world, after all. The men of the Adjustment Bureau (John Slattery, Anthony Mackie, Terence Stamp) use a labyrinth of magical doors to zip through the city undetected, intervening when we veer from our predetermined paths. They’re not overly concerned with the daily drudgery of you or me, but the fate of a presidential
hopeful can’t be toyed with. Elise has got to go. David refuses to relinquish her, and we don’t blame him: Elise is an independent soul, passionate, artistic and the perfect playful foil for David’s staid personality. Screenwriter-director George Nolfi could’ve elected to put a January Jones-type blonde in Blunt’s place, but the powerful yin-yang of the romance would be diminished. Blunt makes us believe that Elise could satisfy David enough that he wouldn’t need the ego-stroking run for political power. The romance is paramount, because intricacies of plot take a backseat to the relationship between David and Elise. If Inception left you feeling befuddled, you’ll be happy to hear that The Adjustment Bureau posits the existence of a parallel world, but doesn’t bog viewers down in the details. There are a lot of time-traveling doors, and you need a spiffy hat to go
through them. The identity of the ultimate puppetmaster — referred to in the film as “the chairman,” but call him God or Allah if you wish — is left up to the reader’s spiritual leanings. The film was based on a short story by Philip K. Dick, the man whose prose became Total Recall, Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly and Minority Report on the big screen. For his part, first-time feature director Nolfi was the screenwriter for The Bourne Ultimatum, but resists the urge to make this film a Bourne re-hash: there are foot chases and explosion or two, but none of the big-budget numbers that made Damon into an action star. Do any of us really have a choice? Is there such a thing as free will? Can we fight our fate? There’s ample room for philosophical and theological discussions over dinner, but The Adjustment Bureau won’t leave you feeling stupid. My kind of movie.
Precocious Porter gives life to ghostly Elvira From page 27
Elvira, is conjured from “the other side.” Unfortunately for Charles, and to the delight of the audience, only he can see her, so things he says to Elvira are misconstrued by Ruth as being said to her. Problems ensue! Director Ryan Crocker keeps it all moving at a good clip and he and his cast have
done an excellent job with the upper-crusty Brit accents. Cameron McDonald does well as a befuddled and exasperated Charles while Colleen Rae Lornie nails the classy bitch that is Ruth. It’s an unenviable role in one sense because Ruth — initially, at least — must seem less like Charles’ perfect match than Elvira. Louise Porter is a perfect Elvira, by turns precocious,
pouty and petulant. The life of this production always seemed to lift when her undead character was on stage. Initially, I loved Danielle Benzon’s Madame Arcati for her down-to-earth, natural choices. She’s less an ethereal wingnut than the sensible Nanny McPhee of the spirit world, and I liked the unusual take. But within that approach, she and Crocker could add
open meeting
to the fun of the play if they explored the limits of genuine responses like excitement and amazement. On the other hand, the maid’s seven-league strides could be toned down. Philip Richard Black and especially Jennifer Morabito provide good support as the Bradmans, but Violet Bradman would never sit on the arm of a sofa or a chair! The jarring choice may have been made in part because there isn’t enough furniture on the set or because
the couch being used is low and very soft. In any event, designer Rita Arhipov could clearly use some help with set decoration and the men’s costumes. The program makes a pitch for some help with the set, so let me help with getting the word out. MULLEN - Frederick Robert Born in Edmonton, Alberta on April 24, 1920, Fred passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 27, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Pat, his sons Bill (Marie) and David (Georgia) and pre-deceased by his son Jim (Maria). Fred was proud of and very close to his grandchildren Mark, Sacha, Rachel, Andrea, James, Jacqueline, Shane and Kyle and his new great-grandchild Jacob. He is also survived by his older sister Phyllis and younger brother Bert. Fred grew up in Edmonton and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. While in the air force Fred was introduced to the new technology of that time: “radar”. This expertise took Fred to the D-Day landing and through Europe as a Flight Lieutenant Commander of a 75-man mobile radar unit. After his discharge, Fred married Muriel Patricia Brown, who became his life-long partner, and enrolled in university at UBC where he graduated with a degree in engineering. This commenced a career that would take him and his family to the United States, Europe, Eastern Canada, before moving back to the West Coast. In 1984 Fred retired after 32 years with the Federal Government and was able to pursue his passion for travel, photography, gardening, community groups and family. Later in his life Fred was actively involved in the Camera Club, Margaret Fulton Centre, the United Church, West Vancouver Seniors Centre, weather centre monitoring and daily visits to his beloved Pat at the Kiwanis Care Home. Fred will be remembered for his laughter, good humour and active involvement with his family. He was always energetic throughout his life and took great pleasure in making photography presentations to the “old folks” at the senior’s centre. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Blvd, North Vancouver. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

LAYZELL - Hilda Mildred (nee Gillis) July 25 1926 – February 26 2011 Beloved wife of Don, Hilda passed on peacefully after a short stay in Lady Minto Hospital. She was born in Cranbrook BC and grew up in lumber towns from Prince George to Cowichan and the Sunshine Coast. In 1947 she was married in North Vancouver where she and Don lived for 50 years moving to Salt Spring Island to be close to their daughter and grandson. An able secretary for a lumber company she graduated to being a devoted home maker, and was always an important influence with her close relations who communicated with her almost daily. Devoted to her husband and family, an inveterate player and winner at Bingo, she spent many happy summer holidays camping at Summer’s Creek near Princeton enjoying fishing and the outdoors. Her strength of character and forceful opinions will be greatly missed as well as her kind and generous spirit. Brothers Harold and Bert and sister Helen predeceased her. Hilda leaves husband Don, daughter Betty - Lou, (Peter) and grandson D.J. to treasure her memory. There will be a family celebration of her life and no service by request. Hilda would be happy to know that instead of flowers, a charitable donation be given, or a small act of kindness to someone were done.

After a long and fulfilling life, and some years of illness in his old age, Allan passed away at the age of 88 years. He will be dearly missed by his family and remembered by many for his service to his profession and his community. Allan was a man devoted to all that is good in family and society. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie, who was his partner and strength for 62 years; his three children and their spouses, Louis (Elisabeth Burgess), Leslie (Shep Alexander) and Jane (Gary Brookes); his grandchildren John, Scott (Katja), Todd, Mark, Ashley, Jeremy, Ted, Sam and Amelia; and his great granddaughter Virginia. Born in Glenavon, Saskatchewan and raised until age 17 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Allan moved with his parents to Vancouver B.C. in 1936. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1945. Allan and Marjorie were married in 1948 and made their home in West Vancouver in 1949. For over 60 years, Allan’s home was West Vancouver. Although he and Marjorie enjoyed their many travels throughout the world, he was always glad to return to the Gisby Street house they had built, or, in his later years, to the view of Ambleside from their apartment home. In 1950, Allan earned a law degree from the University of British Columbia and was called to the bar. In the five decades of his career, Allan combined a successful legal practice with an exceptional career in public service. In 1959, he was appointed to the West Vancouver Municipal Parks and Recreation Commission, a post he held for six years. He was elected as a West Vancouver Municipal Councillor in 1965. In 1966 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia where he served for 17 years as the MLA for West Vancouver-Howe Sound. From 1975 to 1979, Allan served as Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for Native Affairs. In 1979, he was appointed Attorney General for the province and Queen’s Counsel. He served as Attorney General until 1983 when he retired from provincial politics and returned to the practice of law at Davis & Company. As a mentor and advisor to members of the firm, Allan particularly enjoyed his role teaching legal ethics to a generation of young lawyers. At this time he also served as a director of BC Hydro & Power Authority, a Director of the Whistler Land Corporation, a founding member of the RCMP Public Complaints Commission and the BC member of the BC Claims Task Force. Allan’s love for his community of West Vancouver drew him back to public office when, in 1993, he was again elected to West Vancouver Council. He served three terms until his retirement in 2002 at the age of 80. He dedicated his efforts to youth as he supported the construction of the new West Van aquatic centre, the new and upgraded community centers and sports fields. The family is tremendously thankful to the nursing and medical staff at Evergreen House, 1 South, at Lions Gate Hospital, and to Dr. Follows and Dr. Maher for their kind care of Allan in his final years. A private family gathering will honor Allan’s life. To all who knew and admired him, we know Allan’s desire would be for you to live your life fully in service to your family and community. In lieu of flowers or remembrances, please consider contributing to The Pacific Alzheimer Research Foundation, #210-1095 West Pender Street, Vancouver, B.C., V6E 2M6, http://www.parf.ca/4478.html or to a charity of your choice.

Grinding Gears

AFTER a nearly three-decade absence from Canadian streets, Fiat is bringing the 500 back to North America as part of its new investment in resurgent U.S. automaker Chrysler.
Columnist DAVID CHAO reviews the new 2011 Kia Rondo next week in REV
The return of la dolce vita invented by Fiat. The intake side of its fourvalve combustion chamber arrangement can control both duration and lift of valve operation, in addition to timing. Another difference is that it’s achieved via high pressure hydraulic activation using the engine oil. The result is more power and better fuel economy. Fiat claims the 500 can drive 780 kilometres on a full tank of gas, and it can hold 40 litres of fuel. The Cinquecento was last sold in Canada 27 years ago. The design of the new car pays homage to that same little car, which was
Unsightly to be sure, but I know what you’re really thinking, “Aren’t you ginger types supposed to stay out of direct sunlight?” Well, yes. Along with vampires and bogeymen, we red celts do tend to disintegrate into small conical piles of dust if foolish enough to venture out into the noonday sun. Not to worry: I’ve brought a hat. Just think: if Count Vlad had thought to pop on a Tilley, we’d all be currently enslaved by a host of bloodsucking, despotic narcissists. Hang on a sec, isn’t the Conservative Party still in power? As per usual, I digress. This week, Grinding Gears is on vacation, and were this another column, I’d have the luxury of re-running an oldie, but my editor informs me that those complaint letters don’t write themselves. So, over to a universal experience in holiday motoring: the rental car.

2012 Fiat 500
By David Chao and Bob McHugh Contributing Writers
GET ready to live the dolce vita, Canada — the Fiat 500, also known as the “Cinquecento,” will be on streets here soon. There’s been a lot of talk and speculation about this little car, and now we’ll see how it does in North America. The Italian mini car is the current Car of the Year in Europe, and early indicators of interest from buyers in Canada appear to be very positive. The official website, www.fiatcanada.
com, got 60,000 hand-raisers interesting in buying the new 500 and a pre-sale of the first 500 (of the Fiat 500) sold out in just 12 hours. The Italian auto giant will sell its urban runabout through selected Chrysler dealerships, all of whom are making a significant investment in buildings, etc. Fiat currently holds a 25 per cent stake in Chrysler and effectively runs the corporation. Indirectly, you’re also a stakeholder in Chrysler, as the Canadian government currently also holds a 2.9 per cent share. The good news is that Chrysler has turned out to be a good investment and

returned to solvency in 2010 with a tidy $565-million profit. Over the next two years, the financial plan is to repay all of the company’s government loans/ investments and go back to being a publicly traded company again. The Fiat 500 has cityfriendly proportions and is at its best when asked to negotiate a tight parking spot or weave through congested city traffic. It comes in three models, and buyers get to choose from a choice of 14 exterior colours and 11 interior combinations. The 500 is powered by a new 1.4-litre engine with a “MultiAir” technology

REV
500 is a fun and stylish urban runabout From page 37 introduced to Italians all the way back in 1957. That was a time when the country was still struggling to emerge from the aftermath of the Second World War and the Cinquecento played a significant role in that recovery. So the new Fiat 500 is a blend of emotional heritage, a high level of standard features and rational appeal that have been combined with modern Italian style, technical brilliance and an affordable price. The base price of $15,995 for the Pop edition is about $4,000 below the Mini Cooper, the car that Fiat people see as its primary competitor in the Canadian market. Sport ($18,500) and Lounge ($19,500) are the two higher-trim level editions of the 500. Both come with unique body and interior features. Both a performance and a cabriolet (convertible) version of the 500 are also expected later this year. The variety of paint colours available, which come in metallic, nonmetallic and premium tri-coat pearl finishes, is very impressive. Add in the 11 interior choices and buyers have an opportunity to build, through the ordering process, a distinctive little 500 to match their personal taste. The exterior colour choice is also the colour of the dash panel. In the original 500, this was a metal panel, but in the new 500 it’s a
plastic panel that’s designed to provide a softer surface for occupants in an impact and not to interfere with the array of hidden safety features of the car. The 500 comes standard with seven airbags and an occupant-protection structural cage that got a top rating in the European crash tests. It also comes standard with a full complement of active safety features, including electronic stability control. The seventh airbag, one more than usual, is a driver knee airbag. The driver’s seat is height adjustable via a manual cranking system, but even in its lowest position it’s still taller than most cars. I had no problem with head or leg room, despite my above-average build, and the interior feels surprisingly roomy considering its diminutive external dimensions. The overall power-toweight ratio of the 500 is roughly the same as the Mini Cooper, so even though the power output from its engine (101-hp) is less, it moves along in a sprightly manner. We drove both the fivespeed manual and six-speed automatic transmission versions. Both are good, but we were particularly impressed by the automatic. The auto shift lever is perfectly positioned close the steering wheel, on a shelf that extends from the centre stack of the dash. A button on the dash engages a Sport mode that
not only changes the shift pattern of the transmission, it also changes the weighting on the steering and the gas pedal action. Our only complaint was that when you move the shift lever to manual you have to press the sport button again. Fiat claims the 500 has more rear seat leg room and cargo room than the Mini Cooper, but the rear seat is not a place we would probably want to spend a lot of time in, and the cargo space is not huge. Mind you, with the rear seatbacks folded down, you could pack a lot of gear into the space that opens up. Overall, the new Fiat 500 is fun to drive, cleverly designed and fuel efficient with an upbeat attitude, a lot of character — and it’s priced to compete. The North American edition is made at a Chrysler plant in Mexico, and they should start arriving at local dealers anytime now, but expect about a six-to eightweek delay between order and delivery. INSIDE and out, the 2012 Fiat 500’s styling cues pay homage to the original “Cinquecento,” which first rolled off the production lines in 1957.

Abusing a rental is almost as fun as sightseeing
From page 37
Imagine if you were a happy little compact car rolling off the line at some spotless factory, waving good-bye to Mom (the welding robot), looking forward to boarding the boat with all your siblings. Maybe you’ll end up with a young, adventurous, labradorowning couple who’ll drive you out to the countryside for hikes. Perhaps a nerdy Star Wars-loving introvert will stick a “Hans Shot First” sticker on your bumper. What about a chirrupy n’ cheerful old lady who’ll fill the glovebox with extra-strong peppermints and speeding tickets. Well, what you got, if you imagined yourself as a lastgeneration, blue Mitsubishi bound for Australia, was an Irish-Canadian madman attempting to directly channel Bo Duke. I beat that thing like a kevlar pinata. Yes, it’s a sad lot for the rental car. No sunny Sunday morning baths in the driveway. No premium gas fill-ups. No fuzzy dice hanging from the mirror. Just some guy trying to achieve land speed records and “get air.” Hey Luke, the dang bridge is out again! Cue Waylon Jennings: “Them
SPRING BREAK E V E N T
Duke boys better grow wings . . . or start flappin’.” But it’s not all fun and yeehaws. Any rental car worth its salt will take revenge for such callous and abusive treatment by being utter and complete crap in every conceivable facet of its being. I tried to get the Mitsu with a manual transmission, but the nice young sunburned fella at the counter explained that apparently the Yanks only rent autos so nobody stocks anything but. Fine, not a problem. What he failed to mention was that the automatic gearbox in question operated along the same “fullahead-stop” principles as the engine-room telegraph from an olde-timey steamship. I’d pull out into traffic and stomp on the accelerator until my foot punched out through the floorboards and started bouncing off the cat’s eyes. In response, the engine’s revs would surge into the stratosphere with a F1 racer’s banshee wail, and then run smack into a head-high clothesline as the automatic transmission received the request to shift up a gear and went into a panic attack. Metaphorically speaking, that idiotic autobox would run around in circles waving
its arms in the air wildly, hyperventilate into a paper bag, sit back down on trembly legs, make itself a relaxing pot of herbal tea and finally, gingerly, engage the lever that selected second gear. Meanwhile, the enormous truck I had just pulled out in front of would barrel past, rotting gobbets of vaporised kangaroo streaming from the Mad Max arrangement of iron bars welded on to the front, its driver leaning out the window and, with violent gestures and a string of creative obscenities, completely dispelling the stereotype that all Australians are friendly. But something happened over the weeks. In spite of all these shortcomings, I must confess to bonding with that little blue stubborn mule over our Adelaide to Melbourne journey. By creative interpretation of the rental agreement (read as: wilful disregard) it took us on some of the most breathtaking gravel roads on the planet. Kangaroos would bound alongside before making breathtaking leaps over roadside fences. Kookaburras would cackle from the gum trees and emus, the emus. By the time we’d filled every crevice of the Mitsubishi
with fine red dirt, scraped the belly on countless potholes, surprised four rural types in a Land Rover while traversing a “four-wheel-drive only” section of road, and backed it into a absurdly sturdy mailbox (which was apparently designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to withstand artillery fire), the holiday romance was in bloom. It was much the same when we rented a Kia Picanto while honeymooning in Ireland. You can’t get a Kia Picanto in North America, so let me sum up our rental for you: it had four doors and a hatch, a thimble-sized motor, and was about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. On the wide sweeping roads of North America, the Picanto would have been a disaster. Underpowered, flimsy and so cramped that operating the gear lever always got a bit... intimate. However, on the serpentine roads of Ireland, with
hedgerows crowding in from either side and an enormous articulated truck coming the other way, the little car was simply brilliant! And that’s the real beauty of a rental car. Sure, they’re largely terrible. And sure, it’s just a brief liaison where both of you are going to end up a
little bit broken, and with sand in uncomfortable places. But you’ll never forget the places your rental car takes you, nor the places you take it. Places you really weren’t supposed to go. Say, is that a ramp made out of hay bales up there? Yeee-haw!
