Tempe neighbours fear cell tower Microwaves from proposed tower concern
Tessa Holloway tholloway@nsnews.com
RESIDENTS of the Tempe Heights area of North Vancouver are broadcasting their concerns over a proposed cell tower slated for their neighbourhood.
Communications giant Rogers proposes to erect a 41metre pole that will hold up to six panel antennas and one round dish antenna on the Highway 1 right of way at the end of Tempe Glen Drive. have your say at nsnews.com
Across the street from the proposed site is the park where Ralph Johnstone takes his grandchildren to play, and he’s worried that scientists might not fully understand the impact the microwave frequencies in the area of the tower will have on the kids on the playground. “Way back when X-rays were kind of an unknown, eventually it turned out that was pretty NEWS photo Mike Wakefield bad (for people),” he said. “We don’t want to be sitting here RALPHJohnstone’scellphonemayworkbetterwhennewantennasareinstalledonatowerinhisTempeHeightsneighbourhoodinNorthVancouver, finding out that that’s really bad but the location — near where Johnstone is standing — overlooks a playground and he is concerned about the effect of microwaves. stuff.” Johntone has delivered a petition with 74 signatures on it to Rogers, raising concerns about the sightliness, the effect on property values and the perceived lack of consultation with most homeowners in the area. “Everybody from just Tempe Knoll there headed north is going Jane Seyd published in October 2007 that also detailed allegations by Wilson’s to have a grandstand view of the tower,” he said. “Everybody we jseyd@nsnews.com father-in-law Bill Lougheed that Wilson had exaggerated his business spoke to was totally opposed to it.” successes, that Wilson and his wife owed Lougheed millions of dollars and that Lougheed felt Wilson was unfit for political office. Super heroes give capes away Volunteers sew and donate rain gear for homeless
Tessa Holloway newsroom@nsnews.com
IT was a nagging question for employees at North Vancouver-based Arc’teryx, which manufacturers outdoor wear: What to do with all the fabric that’s left over at the end of a product run? At first, they thought why not give it away? Maybe universities or other groups could use it. Then, as designer Tara Latham explains, they thought a little bolder: Why not see if employees would volunteer to make it into rain gear for those

who can’t afford what they normally produce? The resulting partnership saw 300 rain capes handed out through the Harbour Lights Salvation Army shelter in the Downtown Eastside last year. This year, with 560 capes of varying material and colours made over three days by 90 volunteers, they are expanding to North Vancouver’s Harvest Project. “We really didn’t want to see them go to waste, and we started thinking about who needed them most,” said Latham, who sits on the company’s volunteer environment committee. “It was really a grassroots thing.” It remains that way, with many of the employees showing up motivated by the fun they have doing the project, and others learning to sew alongside professional sewers.
The resulting capes are large enough to cover most of the body, waterproof and insulated, and can even double as a sleeping bag. The quality is exactly the same as everything else they make, she said, as is the material. They got lots of good feedback and plan to redo the design next year based on some of the ideas, said Latham. However, the biggest vindication that people like what they saw came from her seeing people wearing them. “I actually saw a few in my neighbourhood, which was really cool personally to see them out on the street being worn,” she said. Latham hopes other companies will jump on the bandwagon, since other clothing companies across the Lower Mainland also have similar product material left over that usually goes to waste. About 200 capes were earmarked for the North Shore this past Christmas, with the rest going to the Harbour Lights Salvation Army shelter.
Source identity claimed crucial to defamation suit From page 1
Wilson and Lougheed then became embroiled in a series of court battles. Lougheed sued Wilson for repayment of the debts he said were owing (much of that claim has since been abandoned by Lougheed), while Wilson sued O’Connor and the corporate owner of the Province newspaper — that also owns the North Shore News — for defamation. Wilson also named ex-Liberal MLA Judy Tyabji Wilson (no relation), her company Tugboat Enterprises, blogger Steve Janke and prominent federal Liberal Mark Marissen in the defamation suit, alleging they also played a role in either distributing or publishing the allegations that smeared his reputation. The defamation lawsuit is now scheduled for trial this fall. But the judge in the case has recently ruled in pretrial deliberations that O’Connor must hand over the name of her source, known only as “a citizen in the riding.” O’Connor has refused, saying the information was
given to her on the promise of confidentiality, adding, “I fear that breaking such a promise would make it difficult for future sources to trust me and provide information.” Williamson, however, said the identity of the source is crucial to the defamation case because it would address the question of whether the person who provided the report did so because it was in the public interest or whether they were motivated by personal or political “malice” towards Wilson. “Is the source a person who felt compelled by his or her civic responsibility to disclose inappropriate activity or wrongdoing in the political system, or is that source involved in a malicious intra-family squabble and promulgating information . . . for purposes related to personal gain and/or vindictiveness?” wrote the judge. “If the source is a participant in a scheme to favour the interests of one side in an acrimonious family dispute, or is a participant in a politically motivated scheme to damage and discredit an elected politician then the public interest in fostering the proper administration of justice outweighs the public interest in protecting a
journalist’s anonymous source.” Dan Burnett, the lawyer representing the Province in the lawsuit, said the paper is appealing the decision, saying recent higher court rulings have favoured the protection of journalist’s confidential sources. “It’s an important value to protect,” he said. But Wilson’s lawyer Jay Straith said he thinks the judge made the right decision. People shouldn’t be able to hide behind a cloak of anonymity while deliberately setting out to destroy a reputation, said Straith. Wilson has long contended either personal or political animosity — or both — motivated the person who gave O’Connor the information. “What happened to Blair Wilson is the kind of thing that causes people not to go into public life because this is the kind of crap that can happen,” said Straith. He said Wilson now lives in another part of the Lower Mainland and consults on accounting. In a related decision the same day, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Ballance awarded Wilson’s wife Kelly Wilson a $5.5 million settlement from her late mother’s estate, following a lengthy court battle.
The sculpture, Enduring Love, was placed in the park last summer by the North Shore chapter of Compassionate Friends, a support group for parents whose children have died. Beneath the sculpture, a path of uneven paving stones holds words and pictures dedicated to those children’s memories. There’s a sailboat with a musical note, a teddy bear and a hummingbird hovering over a flower. “Sunshine” reads one of the stones. Another says “Goodnight moon.” Cathy Sosnowsky, leader of the North Shore group, said the stones deliberately didn’t contain the names of the children, many of whom have specific memorials elsewhere. “We wanted it to stay as a memorial to the love of children,” she said. But where two of the stones used to be set, brown dirt is now visible and only the outlines of the stones remain. One of the stones said “Love”, said Sosnowsky, while the other had a picture of a butterfly, drawn by the sister of a young man who had died. Sosnowsky said the missing stones were discovered just before Christmas, by a mother who went to visit the memorial on her deceased daughter’s birthday. Sosnowsky said it wouldn’t be hard to pry the stones loose. “It could have just been given as a Christmas present,” she said. Since discovering the missing stones, Sosnowsky said she’s been in contact with one child’s parents and has tried to reach the others. For a bereaved parent to come across their own child’s stone as missing, “It would be very upsetting,” she said. The sculpture and the stones as whole is “a tribute to our children,” said Sosnowsky. It’s also a public place for bereaved parents to gather or contemplate. “Sometimes as bereaved parents we feel like we’re shunned,” said Sosnowsky, who joined the group after her 17-year-old son Alex died after an accidental fall on his head 18 years ago. “They want to think we’ve gotten over it. We haven’t,” she said. “We’re here. We love our children. We want them remembered.” Sosnowky said the sculpture captures what the parents wanted to show the community. “We wanted it to be not too sad, not too representational, not too abstract,” she said. “It’s lovely and can be interpreted in so many ways.” Some see the circular hole in the sculpture as emptiness, others see it as a window to what lies beyond, or a representation of infinity. “We wanted it to stay as a memorial to the love of children,” she said. The group, Compassionate Friends, is for all parents who have lost children — whether those children are babies or adults. Some have died through illness or accident. Some have taken their own lives. “We meet to share our grief and support each other,” she said. Many members choose to visit the sculpture on significant
Tower conforms to health regulations From page 1 Ministry of Transportation. “Our customers want to be connected at any time and any place and their needs are changing,” Holland said via email. The transmission tower meets Health Canada’s regulations. Scientific literature listed by Health Canada has found no danger of health impacts from that level of radiation. A spokesperson for Health Canada pointed the North Shore News to its website, which states “worst-case RF (radio frequency) exposure levels emitted from cellphone towers are typically thousands of times below those specified by science-based exposure standards.” This is the second tower of this type to be proposed along the Highway 1 right of way. Another proposal was made public a month ago for a tower near Taylor Way in West Vancouver. Linda Gold, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transportation, said there has been a spike in the number of applications for cellphone towers on ministry land. “As the CRTC has allowed more cellular providers we have seen more of these types of applications.” Gold said new phones require more bandwidth and that carriers are trying to address dead spots in their networks. Currently, neither the ministry nor the City of North Vancouver have any policies relating to the placement of telecommunications

towers, but Gold said that’s not a current concern. She said companies are required to meet roadside safety standards, provide safe access to the construction and consult the local municipality, but that the ministry leaves public consultation to the installing company. Mayor Darrell Mussatto said the city has held public meetings in the past about this issue, but the federal government can override any local decision on telecommunications towers. “We can’t say no,” he said, but in the same breath added he wouldn’t ignore the towers, particularly in this case. “We might have a little bit more opportunity to encourage more consultation, because they have to go through our land to get to it.” The design of the tower hasn’t been finalized or approved as of yet. Following the submission of the petition, Rogers agreed to extend the consultation period until Feb. 11. No public meeting is required in the consultation, however proponents are required to respond to “reasonable” concerns provided in writing, though concerns over health and property values aren’t within the boundaries of the process. Submissions can be sent to Kiersten Enemark at Standard Land Company, agents for Rogers, via email at commentsBC@standardland.com. dates. The group also plans to hold a ceremony at the site on either Mother’s Day or Father’s Day each year. Sosnowsky said she hopes someone who knows what happened to the paving stones will choose to return them once they realize the significance of the stones. If not, she said, the sculptor has agreed to replace them. Anyone who wants more information about the North Vancouver chapter of Compassionate Friends can contact Sosnowsky at 926-6513.

ANADA’S new environment minister has a peculiar take on his job. Rather than safeguarding the natural world, he sees it as his role to make its destruction more palatable. Peter Kent went on national television Thursday to assure Canadians that everything is fine. He acknowledged that climate change is a reality, but told his audience we’re right on track to solve it. We’re going to revise regulations for long-haul trucking, for instance. Oh, and our nation’s gas-belching oilsands are really not a problem. Such words from an environment minister are astonishing. Thirteen years ago, Canada and other nations signed a protocol to reduce greenhouse emissions to six per cent below 1990 levels. That was considered a modest and necessary first step on a
you said it “Some Grinch stole the Christ out of Christmas.” Father John Brioux of St. Paul’s Catholic Church reacts to the theft of the church’s Baby Jesus figurine from an outdoor nativity scene sometime on or around Boxing Day (from a Jan. 7 news story). ••• “It’s not uncommon to see hoaxtype devices, but right now we’re treating it as real.” North Vancouver RCMP spokesman Cpl. Peter DeVries reacts to a suspicious package that was found on the front lawn of a home in the 500-block of East 17th Street. Two blocks were evacuated and the RCMP bomb disposal unit investigated, but the package turned out to be from a discarded Halloween costume (from a Jan. 2 news story). ••• “It was fundraised for by the community, built by the community and it should stay in the community.” Cindy Lanctot calls on the North Vancouver school district to move the special-needs play equipment from the defunct Fromme school to Lynn Valley elementary, where her children now attend. path to averting disaster. Since then, our emissions have climbed to 24 per cent above 1990 levels. With skyrocketing energy consumption and unwavering reliance on fossil fuels, we are showing no signs of turning that trend around. What Canada needs is a clear, comprehensive plan for systemic transformation. But Kent’s comments show he has absolutely no intention of delivering one. Instead, he is focusing his energy on convincing the public and the international community that there’s really nothing wrong. This, in and of itself, is terrifying. In any area of private industry, someone who so completely neglects the requirements of their job would be fired. Come election time, the Canadian public should bear this in mind.

Get involved in your community plan Dear Editor: For the first time in recent history, our children’s life spans may be shorter than our own due to our diet, our sedentary and stressful lifestyles and our environment. So how does this relate to the District of North Vancouver? The district’s low-density neighbourhoods offer limited choices for housing types and transportation. For the most part, district residents live in lower density neighbourhoods and rely on their cars to get around. Seventy-seven per cent of district residents drive to work, compared to 67 per cent of residents who live elsewhere in Metro Vancouver. This reliance on the car increases our risk of obesity and of developing chronic health conditions, such as cardiovasculardisease, diabetesand asthma.Additionally, every 10 minutes of commuting is associated with a 10 per cent reduction in civic engagement. The feelings of isolation and loneliness that ensue can lead to poorer health outcomes for some residents. In comparison, studies have shown that living in a mixed density neighbourhood provides more health and social benefits than previously thought. People who live in neighbourhoods where they can walk or cycle to meet their needs drive 58 per cent less often than residents who live in lower density neighbourhoods. Higher density neighbourhoods, too, are beneficial to the children who call them home. Research shows that children actually thrive in mixed income neighbourhoods due to the availability of more services and programs. These services and programs available equally to both affluent and lower-income families result in kids who are better prepared for school, emotionally, psychologically and physically.

For these reasons, it’s important that we design our communities so they promote and support active lifestyles, provide a variety of housing options and create opportunities for positive social interactions. To this end, the District of North Vancouver is revising its official community plan. At its heart, the OCP is about people — how and where we live, how we relate, recreate and socialize. The OCP is a roadmap that will help guide our community’s growth well into the middle of this century. The OCP is your plan. And to be effective, it needs your input. I urge you to get involved and provide to the
District of North Vancouver your new voices and new ideas about how your community should look 10, 20, 30 years from now. Building connections with nature
Dear Editor: As part of a Capilano University sustainability course, Project Change, a group of us chose to help students develop their own appreciation for nature. Welivein“Super,NaturalB.C.,”theself-proclaimed “Best Place on Earth!” Tourism commercials showcase outdoorsy Canadians exercising in their natural environment. But the sad reality is that many British Columbians don’t do such activities. In metropolitan areas especially, mankind’s connections with nature are fading. Countless individuals in the financial district of Vancouver stare out of their windows at the magnificence of the dramatic North Shore topography. Renting a bike and maneuvering the tourist-ridden sea wall or “exploring” the well-trodden paths of Stanley Park simply doesn’t
count as being one with nature. How many of us slave away in stuffy, expensive gyms? Many Vancouverites, myself included, often forget about the accessibility of the gorgeous, unspoiled forests of the North Shore. And here is the shocking part — hiking is free. Thus, we began to hike. We meandered at a leisurely pace along the Lynn Loop trail. A few weeks later we tackled Lynn Peak, getting an excellent cardiovascular workout with a breathtaking view at the summit as our reward. I feel that I have built my own connection with Vancouver’s North Shore. I can look at the spectacular scenery rising above me and see mountains neither daunting nor unfamiliar. The question is — when will you build your own connection? Rachelle Cadanao North Vancouver

Pisces (Feb. 20-March 20) This year, your journey requires you to pack an extralarge money-belt. Benadryl will prove itself handy when it comes to the tail end of your seven-year-itch. Right now, Pisces is all over the map — for every fresh-faced, optimistic Justin Bieber (March 1), there’s a gloomy, deflated Gordon Brown (Feb. 20), and for every frisky, Timberlake-dating Jessica Biel (March 3), there’s a wildly flailing Kelsey Grammer (21 Feb.). With all the confusion, try saying no to drugs, and an ecstatic yes to KFC’s 540calorie Double Down. Aries (March 21-April 20) Make 2011 your Ram-

You’re brave and multitalented if you’re like James Franco (April 19), acting, directing, writing, painting and completing your PhD at Columbia University while attending the Rhode Island School of Design, or Lady Gaga (March 28), who’s likely playing the piano while upside down in a sack of rice as we speak. If, instead, your mind currently resembles that of wrinkled slacker Hugh Hefner (April 9, 1926), this is your year to slip out of your pajamas and into something a little less comfortable. for the Bull of the zodiac. Your rampant materialism will trump your cagey humanity as you leave friends and relatives in your dust. But you keep forgetting that all Taureans are not blessed with the talents of footballer David Beckham (May 2) or Facebooker Mark Zuckerberg (May 14) — one day you will need more than a house beautiful and a trophy spouse to get by. Why not expand your horizons in 2011? Go full wackadoodle, like Shirley MacLaine (April 24). Gemini (May 20-June 21) Geminis are known for their dual natures and quick

The zodiac’s Twins also have an unknowable side — just ask murderer John Hinckley Jr. (May 29) and French right wingnut Jean-Marie Le Pen. Mme. Mysterioso’s advice? Think long and hard before you speak in 2011, whether you model yourself on Marilyn Monroe (June 1) or Jeffrey Dahmer (May 21). Notice of Alternative Approval Process – Contingent Liabilities in Proposed Lease
Notice is hereby given that the District of West Vancouver has entered into an agreement with Pacific Arbour Retirement Communities Inc. to lease District-owned land labelled as the “Proposed Development Site” on the sketch plan shown. The term of the proposed lease is 125 years and the rent for the term will be $14,500,000 to be paid in full on the commencement date of the proposed lease (the “Basic Rent”). The District will incur two contingent capital liabilities (the “Contingent Liabilities”) as follows: (a) the District must return to Pacific Arbour $13,050,000 of the Basic Rent (in the amount of $14,500,000) if the District terminates the lease as a result of a failure by Pacific Arbour to commence construction of its proposed development on the Proposed Development Site within 12 months of the commencement date of the lease (the $1,450,000 balance of the Basic Rent will be retained by the District as liquidated damages); and (b) the District must pay to Pacific Arbour 75% of the net proceeds that it receives when it leases the Proposed Development Site to another developer if the District re-enters the site as a result of a failure by Pacific Arbour to meet any of the other construction milestones in the lease, but the District will retain all of the Basic Rent (in the amount of $14,500,000). The above two Contingent Liabilities may never arise, and the exact amount of the second Contingent Liability described in (b) above cannot be determined at this time. The District may proceed with the proposed lease containing the Contingent Liabilities unless at least 10% of the electors of the entire District of West Vancouver sign elector response forms and submit them to the District by the deadline of 4:00 pm on February 11, 2011. If 10% of the electors sign and submit elector response forms by the deadline, the District must obtain the assent of the electors before proceeding.
Notice of Alternative Approval Process – Removal of Park Dedication
Notice is also hereby given that the District of West Vancouver intends to adopt Miscellaneous Parks Dedication Bylaw No. 1091,
In September, it was announced that the band would be taking a year’s hiatus, and it looks as though this could become permanent. “It’s been in a slow decline over the years,” said Roma Krusch, one of the band’s directors. “I think we did have one rough patch, but we managed to build it up. . . . We haven’t been able to recover on this one.” Despite being a non-profit, parent-run organization relying on membership fees and sponsorship, finances were not the root of the problem, according to Krusch. “(The band is) in hiatus photo submitted because we simply are not getting the kids to join. 1945, Amendment Bylaw No. 4670, 2010 (the “Park Dedication Removal Bylaw”). This proposed bylaw removes the dedication for park purposes, as set out in the District’s Bylaw No. 1091, 1945, of District-owned land known as John Richardson Park, legally described as parcel identifier 012-809-829, Lot 19, Block 4, East part of District Lot 554, Plan 3522.
least 10% of the electors of the entire District of West Vancouver sign elector response forms and submit them to the District by the deadline of 4:00 pm on February 11, 2011. If 10% of the electors sign and submit elector response forms by the deadline, Council must obtain the assent of the electors before adopting the Park Dedication Removal Bylaw.
General Provisions Applicable to Both of the Alternative Approval Processes
Sketch Plan of Proposed Development Site and reconfigured John Richardson Park
The Park Dedication Removal Bylaw would facilitate the reconfiguration of John Richardson Park (the “Reconfiguration”), without changing the size of the Park, for the purpose of (a) facilitating the creation of the Proposed Development Site (defined above); (b) creating park access from 22nd Street; and (c) correcting an anomaly in the configuration of the dedicated corridor for Marine Drive, all as shown on the sketch plan set out above. This proposed Reconfiguration requires that the park dedication be removed (the reconfigured park will then be rededicated by subdivision plan under section 107 of the Land Title Act). Council may adopt the Park Dedication Removal Bylaw unless at
The District estimates that 3,255 is the total number of eligible electors who would need to submit signed elector response forms for either or both of the above alternative approval processes in order to prevent the District from proceeding with the proposed lease or adopting the Park Dedication Removal Bylaw, as the case may be, without the assent of the electors. Elector responses must be in the form established by the District. These forms are available on request from the Municipal Hall, 750 17th Street, West Vancouver, BC V7V 3T3 (phone 604-925-7004). The only persons entitled to sign the forms are electors of the District. The agreement to lease, the proposed lease containing Contingent Liabilities, the Park Dedication Removal Bylaw and documents and records relating thereto are available (as of December 23, 2010) for public inspection at the West Vancouver Municipal Hall at 750 17th Street, West Vancouver, BC, on regular business days (Monday to Friday except statutory holidays) between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.
Public Information Meeting
The District will hold a Public Information Meeting regarding: (a) the Park Dedication Removal Bylaw, the proposed reconfiguration of John Richardson Park, and the preliminary design plans for the reconfigured Park; and (b) the lease to Pacific Arbour, the Contingent Liabilities and Pacific Arbour’s proposed development on the Proposed Development Site. All interested persons are invited to attend. Meeting Date: Thursday, January 13, 2011 Time: 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm Location: West Vancouver Memorial Library (in Welsh Hall) at 1950 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, BC Dated this 23rd day of December 2010 S.Scholes, Municipal Clerk, The Corporation of the District of West Vancouver.

Buy the grow-a-brain kit, moody Cancers From page 7
Cancer (June 22-July 21) As the moody bimbo of the zodiac, you’re finally forced to explain yourself this year. Yes, Lizzie Borden (July 19), of course you can go first, but put down that axe. Pamela Anderson (July 1), you’re next. After that, let’s hear from David Hasselhoff (July 17) and King Edward VIII (June 23), who threw over England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales for that deeply discounted American, Mrs. Wallis Simpson. In 2011, Crabs, grow a brain. There’s actually a kit you can buy. Leo (July 22-Aug. 22) As usual, Leo, you’re splendid, headstrong and bossy. Be warned, 2011 is the one time you Lions won’t get your way. Dial it back, Mick Jagger (July 26) and Roman Polanski (Aug. 18), channelling your gentle, twee, inner Beatrix Potter (July 28). You’re “performers,” aren’t you? Challenge yourself with less glamorous roles. Rather than your usual shtick of chewing the scenery, consume more cabbage. It’s better for your colon.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Like Lance Armstrong (Sept. 18), it’s time for all Virgos to get off that high horse. You may be sticklers for perfection, but you make as many mistakes as anybody else, whether you’re Dr. Phil (Sept. 1), Mother Teresa (Aug. 27) or Gene Simmons (Aug. 25). So what if the dancing bears at your surprise birthday party “aren’t in synch”? Take a pill and reread your encyclopedia. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 21) Suffice it to say, nobody appreciates your brilliance. You are perennially underrated. Johnny Appleseed (Sept. 26), meet comedian Zach Galifianakis (Oct. 1) and Portuguese water dog Bo Obama (Oct. 9). This year, the Scales must cultivate an attitude of gratitude. While every Libran can’t be America’s First Dog, you can certainly warm to your own circumstances and thereby uplift them. Try to emulate Clive Owen (Oct. 3). Handsome and talented, yet rarely employed, he has no complaints. Scorpio (Oct. 22-Nov. 22) Repeat after me: I am not Adam Ant. Unless you are
Adam Ant (Nov. 3), you at least have that to be pleased about. Take the chip off your shoulder, Scorpions, and cultivate the charm of Grace Kelly (Nov. 12) or Matthew McConaughey (Nov. 4). After all, you’re not difficult, you’re “complex.” You’re not pig-headed, you’re “determined.” Give that a whirl, genius — and I do mean you, Bill Gates (Oct. 28). The fact that Charles Manson (Nov. 12) is a Scorpio is mere coincidence.
Sagittarius (Nov. 23-Dec. 22) Always happy as clams, you Archers will firmly hit your targets in 2011. Sadly, you’ll miss the fact that right behind those targets are adorable big-eyed kittens. Consider laser eye surgery. And while your extreme sociability is usually an asset, if you’re preternaturally perky Dick Clark (Nov. 30), may we sweetly point out that at 82, retirement is a perfectly legitimate career option? So sayeth Mme. Mysterioso, still going strong at 143. Bonne chance, mes acolytes. kate@katezimmerman.ca

The North Shore resident has devoted her life to helping impoverished families in Tanzania and, so far, no storm has stopped her from pursuing her goals of helping some of the world’s most poverty-stricken communities. One threatening storm cloud is the financial support she needs for her non-profit organization, Wipe Their Tears, to continue. Paquette says that this year her charity has received absolutely no help from the community. “Having lived on the North Shore for over 20 years. . . I’ve been really disappointed,” she says. Paquette founded Wipe Their Tears in 2008 and since then has donated 90 per cent of her income to support her cause, even refinancing her own home. If you’re a winter enthusiast like me, then I hope you recognize and know how dangerous it can be out there, especially if you don’t have the proper training or experience. If you don’t have the experience or knowledge yet, the best part is that gaining and learning that knowledge is super fun. If you’re a resort skier, the most important thing to remember is that the boundaries and closed areas were set by avalanche and ski patrol professionals who have years of experience in that terrain. Work together to set financial goals QUESTION:
My boyfriend and I are both 34 and have been dating for six years. We are very similar in most ways and get along well, but we are really different in how we think about money. We earn about the same amount, but I am a saver and he is a spender. We have had numerous conversations about this and all of them end in accusations and anger. Even though he is pushing for it, I am worried about making a commitment to him. Can you help? Answer: In general, conflicts in relationships arise around the differences between partners. Differences about money and the friction that results is a common issue that couples bring into counselling. Obviously, the more extreme the difference, the more difficult it will be to find common ground. Your first move should be to decrease the anger and accusation. When emotion runs high, discussions do not go smoothly. Since you say that you and your boyfriend get along well in

most ways, I presume that you have similar goals and values. This may be a good place to begin. How do the two of you think about your future together? What standard of living do you expect to share? Do you want to own a home, have children, travel, etc.? These things may not be priorities, but I am sure that there are some priorities and it is a good idea to get these out on the table and get some agreement on them. Though money may not make you happy, having no money can make you miserable. Start with the necessities of food and shelter and go from there.
There are always some emotional underpinnings that drive our relationship with money. The reason why you save and your boyfriend spends is probably more complex than you’ve imagined. How our parents managed or mismanaged their money is probably seminal to these underpinnings. It may help if you and your boyfriend explore what money meant in each of your families: what value it held, how it was earned, how it was spent and what tensions, if any, existed around it. A few years ago, I had a client named Joe who grew up in a family that was always on welfare. When he started to work (at the age of 12!) he was determined that he would never be poor again. He found that he could get by on very little and set about saving everything he could. His frugal lifestyle worked well for him until he met his future wife. She too had grown up impoverished, but her reaction to the experience was quite different than Joe’s. She had been very affected

need. She has also purchased land to build a care centre for orphans. Ever since she was a small child, Paquette has known she wanted to go to Africa. “I don’t know whether I saw something or saw a picture. . . but it was always, ‘I’m going to Africa. I’m going to build an orphanage one day.’” Paquette volunteered in Sudan during the ’70s and, despite witnessing death, famine and poverty unlike anything she had experienced before, she fell deeply in love with the culture and the people. Her determination to return and help was stronger than ever. Since her time in Sudan, Paquette raised a family in Canada. Now that her children are grown, she has returned to Africa several times, this time to Tanzania, where she volunteered in 2004. “I saw a lot of poverty, I saw starvation,” she says. “I knew Tanzania was going to be the country I was going to come back and help.” Contacts in southern Tanzania suggested she go to the northern villages that needed more attention. Paquette set off for a four-day overland journey to the village of Mchukuuni via local transportation. “I call it the forgotten vil-
lage,” she says “because if you have no reason to go there, you would never stop there. . . The people have nothing. I fell in love with that village and I knew on my own I would never have enough money to help them to the degree I wanted.” Paquette decided to found the charity Wipe Their Tears in order to raise enough money for the children of Mchukuuni and the surrounding villages. The charity is bare bones — Paquette won’t even rent a car with the money she has raised, preferring to use local transportation to keep costs low. Every cent she makes from donations goes straight to the village. She arrives alone from Canada, and hires local villagers to help her with her work, paying for their food, clothes and lodging along the way. Paquette’s greatest immediate concern is preventing malaria, one of the biggest causes of childhood mortality, and one of the simplest to help. “Last time, I purchased over 1,000 mosquito nets and personally delivered them mud hut to mud hut,” she says. Mosquito nets alone can reduce childhood mortality rates in poor countries by 20 per cent and large nets, big enough to protect four children at once, are available for between $8$10 a piece.
Paquette will be leaving for Mchukuuni again at the start of February, and hopes to raise enough funds to provide another 1,000 nets to families. She is currently saving as much as she can from her income to further the effort. On her next visit, Paquette plans to meet with the chairman of Mchukuuni village to organize a Swahili translation of AIDS prevention guidelines, to encourage teenagers in particular to use condoms. “I don’t think they have enough education about AIDS,” she says. “They’re not afraid of it enough.” When it comes to North Shore help, Paquette remains discouraged. Of the 70 letters she sent to local companies for financial support, none have donated. The two main reasons cited were the weak economy and the fact that the cause is not in the local community. One particular company suggested help could be given once Paquette had established a bigger charity. “I actually said to them, ‘Why does it take a world disaster for corporations or people (to) give willingly and give generously?’” says Paquette. “The people in Africa live in a world disaster every day of their life.” Despite the lack of help, Paquette remains excited about her work and cannot wait to get
back to the eye of the storm. “It’s a dream, and honestly, when I get off that plane in Africa I feel I’m home.” Paquette is seeking volunteers to help her, to help from within B.C., aiding the fundraising effort and raising awareness. If you would like to get involved or make a donation, visit www. wipetheirtears.com.

Be prepared for avalanche in B.C.’s backcountry From page 11 have paid with their lives. If you choose to step off into the B.C. backcountry then you are more than welcome to, but only after you enroll in an Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 course. If not, you’re playing Russian roulette with a stacked house. Courses are available anywhere from mountain guides throughout B.C. and they will educate you about the equipment, avalanche terrain and how to mitigate the dangers. Check the Canadian Avalanche Association’s website (www. avalanche.ca) for a list of guides in your area as well as to check on current conditions. Secondly, you need to have all the right gear. You should always carry the 10 essentials, which consist of a compass, flashlight, knife, extra food and clothing, shelter, fire starter, map, communication device and a first aid kit. In addition, you also need proper avalanche gear, which consists of an avalanche beacon, probe and shovel. An avalanche beacon is worn on your body and transmits a signal when turned on. In the case of an avalanche, a beacon can be switched to search mode to find a buried beacon and person. Backcountry Access (www. backcountryaccess.com) makes one of the best, well-priced digital beacons on the market. Their Tracker and New Tracker 2 digital beacons are simple to use, making them ideal for all backcountry users. During an avalanche things can get pretty confusing so an easy-to-use beacon is what you want. I use Genuine Guide Gear’s (www.genuineguidegear.com) avalanche probe and shovel, as they were designed by top guides for top guides. A probe is a series of lightweight poles strung together

by a steel cable to form one long pole. In the event of an avalanche, once you locate the area of the buried victim by beacon, you use a probe to pinpoint the body under the snow as well as see how deep they’re buried. This is where the hardest work comes in the form of shoveling. G3’s avalanche shovels are made of extremely durable aluminum and have a telescoping handle for good leverage. Avalanche snow and debris can be as hard as cement so if you have a plastic lightweight shovel, replace it with a proper aluminum one. I also use radio communication when I’m out in the mountains and ensure my whole group knows the plans for the day and know at anytime if they feel uneasy they can call it off and we will all turn back. Playing in the mountains is both fun and exhilarating, but it can also be very dangerous if you don’t treat it with respect. Brush up on your skills and then go play.

Ask the Doctor: Why do I have trouble losing weight even when I exercise and eat well?
— JANE (36), WEST VANCOUVER
Most people are aware the key to weight loss is nutrition and exercise. However, for many people, hormone imbalances prevent diet and exercise from working. One of the most important hormones to balance is cortisol. Chronic stress causes high levels of cortisol, which slows your metabolism by interfering with your thyroid, boosting fat storage and increasing your desire for refined carbohydrates. But the good news is that you can balance your cortisol levels through supportive supplements and stress management techniques.

NV man rolls with the punches IT was 1930 and 16-year-old Laurie Norman needed a job.
“It was the Depression and jobs were scarcer than hens’ teeth,” he recalls. Norman knew about fowl anatomy, having been raised on a chicken farm. Norman found a job in the stores department of Burrard Dry Dock. For the next five years, he would make the daily journey from Burnaby to the shipyards, walking a mile and a half to the streetcar that would take him downtown in time to catch the 8 a.m. ferry to North Vancouver. “The stores supplied everyone, from electricians and carpenters to boilermakers and riveters,” he says. “I carried messages all over and I learned everything about that place. Or I’d get on the ferry and take patterns across the inlet to the repair yard at Coal Harbour or over to the foundry at Granville Island.” When he turned 21, Norman was let go. He was a single man who would be earning the wages of a married man. “Nobody wanted to do it but finally, Clarence Wallace

Laura Anderson gave me $100 and I was gone,” he says. Norman had learned industrial first aid at the shipyards and had taken business courses at night school. Even so, it took six months of weekly visits in those Depression days for Norman to get on at Gordon and Belyea Ltd., wholesale hardware and ships’ chandlers. “I finally told them I was an orphan and that did the trick,” he says, with a grin. It was true. Norman and his two brothers lost their parents in the flu pandemic in 1920. Brothers Jack and Albert were raised by grandmothers and Norman went to his
great aunt Hilda and Uncle John Quinn and their chicken farm. The families lived within a mile of each other in the Lochdale area of Burnaby around Sperling and Hastings. Starting in the warehouse at Gordon and Belyea, Norman worked his way up through sales and management positions to secretary of the management committee. “We supplied all those companies — North Vancouver Ship Repair, Boeing out in Richmond and Burrard Dry Dock,” he says. Supply and expediting companies like Gordon and Belyea were essential links with the logging, mining, shipping and construction enterprises that opened up the province and developed Vancouver as a port and as an aircraft and shipbuilding centre during the Second World War. Norman’s work was deemed an essential service in the war. “Mr. Belyea found out I had been called up. ‘Yes, when the Queen calls, you go,’ I said. ‘Not necessarily,’ came the reply. ‘The Queen doesn’t know what you do. You’re needed here but to

stay on, you must join the reserve army.’ I was already a sergeant in the reserves so that was all right.” One day, after the war was over, Norman got an order for injectors for a sawmill up at Harrison Mills. The injectors were in stock but there was a catch. They had to be on the six o’clock CPR train that day. Otherwise, the mill would have to shut down. Norman delivered the parts to the train personally. Norman married Elsie Dawkins in 1939. Their two children, Patricia and Stephen, participated in the Boys and Girls Club, held in their local church, with their father volunteering on weekends. When Gordon and Belyea was sold, Norman moved on to sell water pipe and equipment to B.C.’s municipalities.

B.C. wine stars in Dine Out Vancouver
YOU’D have to be living under a rock not to know that this week saw the launch of this year’s Dine Out Vancouver promo, with the online unveiling of some 200 plus menus from participating restaurants, offered at $18, $28 and $38 for three courses — HST, tip and alcohol extra.
Now in its ninth year, it would be hard to call Dine Out revolutionary. However, there’s no doubt in our mind that the program’s immense success owes not a small vote of thanks to Vancouver’s unusually robust food and wine culture — all the more reason to note that one of Dine Out’s key ingredients is the partnership of the BC Wine Institute. The resurgence of B.C.’s wine industry has had a lot to do with the emergence of a distinct west coast Canadian culinary culture. In fact, to be blunt, you could say that there was no such thing as regional cuisine around these parts until the modern, in part VQA-driven industry blossomed in the Okanagan and elsewhere.
Notable Potables Tim Pawsey
Way back in the early ’90s, it was the BC Wine Institute (then under the leadership of now Haywire Winery owner Christine Coletta) who undertook the very first of Vancouver’s now plentiful food and wine promotions, in which restaurants offered a prix fixe menu combining BC salmon and VQA Pinot Blanc. For some major players it was a watershed moment, in which some restaurants wound up tasting B.C. wines for the first time and — gasp! — even deigned to include them on their French- and Californiadominated wine lists. BC Wine Institute executive director Miles Prodan also notes Dine Out’s remarkable growth. “In fact,” he says, “We
attribute events such as this with establishing B.C. wines in the key Vancouver market. It was wine and food pairing programs such as the earlier ‘Marriage made in BC’ and now the likes of Dine Out that got the consumer tasting B.C. wines in the first place. Plus, every year we reach somebody new.” Like thousands of others, the Hired Belly also has been browsing Dine Out menus, though not just for the food, but for the wines as well. While there are some great dining deals, no question, the smart diners will also
pay attention to the wine programs being offered — if the prices are advertised. Judging from what we’re seeing, there’s a pretty brisk business going on in so-called “cachet” wines — the hardto-find drops that may only show up on private wine store shelves. In one instance, we noted Tantalus Pinot Noir ’08 going for $17.50 a glass. Nice wine if you can find it, usually at around $30 a bottle, which makes that a cheeky price, to say the least, even in the best of restaurants. And it’ll sure put a dent in any savings you might see on a $38 menu.

That said, there are still plenty of fair wine deals to be found. And several restaurants have gone to some length to come up with thoughtful food and wine suggestions that really highlight B.C.’s diversity. At Le Gavroche, owner Manuel Ferreira offers a $38 menu pairing option of three glasses of Tinhorn Creek Oldfield Collection wines for an extra $28. This year’s slightly higher price reflects the top tier wines, says Ferreira — who, incidentally, will be running Miradoro, Tinhorn’s winery restaurant,

Saharan tents add flair to any function mkrishnan@nsnews.com
EVERYONE wants to throw a party that’s memorable — different from the rest. But finding ways to do that takes some effort. Sometimes it’s all in the details and other times it’s about something more substantial, like the choice of venue. In the case of the latter, one North Vancouver company may have just the thing — oneof-a-kind Saharan tents. Benita Marr, a decorator in the event planning industry, discovered the tents while
using Twitter for work. “I actually came across a gentleman who does this in U.K. and he is actually from Africa,” she says, adding the two began corresponding about business ventures. “I’ve always been kind of thinking about travelling and bringing stuff back and selling it here just because things in Africa are just so unique and nobody really has things like that over here. At first it was just leather poufs and little furnishings and stuff.” Then, last Christmas Marr’s mother-in-law bought her a ticket to London to meet up with her Twitter acquaintance. The pair headed to Morocco

together. “So I visited with all the artists who make the tents and see how they’re made and actually go to see some of Morocco at the same time, so it was quite exciting,” says Marr. She was drawn in by the luxuriousness of the tents — which are made from thick cotton canvas with a waterproof layer and velvet interior. “I’ve never seen anything like them before,” she says. “These tents were used by kings and sultans thousands of years ago travelling through the desert. . . . There is a lot of history behind them and they’re made on street corners, hand sewn and using sewing machines.” There’s also a lot of symbolism in the tent’s design. The exterior is white with a black symbol that represents freedom and the interior colours, red, green and gold, stand for power, sacredness and wealth, according to Marr. In the future she plans on bringing more neutral colour combinations as well, such as gold and cream — ideal for a wedding. “As time goes in I’d like to get in more. I can get them made in any kind of different

cookies and let’s not forget the aperitifs. They aren’t paying the price of eggnog indulgence. Or are they? I’ve noticed a few wide loads waddling around alongside those cute Christmas puppies at the dog I put it in my freezer hoping park, and I’m not talking about to stay away from it, but the two-leggeds! Just like staying away from a foot-long humans, dogs should maintain Toblerone bar is like trying to an optimum healthy weight. stay away from . . . a foot-long Extra saddle bags hanging Toblerone bar! Keeping weight Canine Connection off their hips and mid section off during the holiday season lead to the same diseases as in Joan Klucha can be a challenge — we often humans: heart disease, diabetes let our fitness routines take a mellitus (the canine version of backseat to shortbread and gingerbread men. insulin-dependent diabetes), hypertension (high It shouldn’t be that way for our hounds. They blood pressure), orthopedic injuries such as aren’t tempted with butter tarts, rum balls, sugar cruciate ligament rupture or patellar luxation —
which are fancy terms for blowing their knees out resulting in expensive surgery — osteoarthritis, respiratory disorders and various forms of cancer. All of these are preventable if we ease up on the food and treats we give our canine loved ones. We can’t blame the dogs, unless they have hypothyroidism. They don’t have opposable thumbs to open cupboards and handle the utensils to fix their own dinners. They can’t walk themselves everyday to burn off the calories. So how do you know if your dog is overweight or even obese? If you run your hands along your dog’s ribs and can easily feel them with gentle pressure; it feels like a T-shirt is covering the ribs and you can see a faint outline of the last rib or two, your dog is probably within the healthy normal range. If you need firm pressure with your fingers to feel ribs, it feels like your dog is wearing a polar fleece, you can’t see their ribs but their belly is hanging below their chest line, your dog is probably overweight. If your dog runs away from you because you are digging your fingers into their rib cage so hard
to find their ribs that you are tickling them and it feels like your dog is wearing a down parka, your dog may be obese. The prescription for weight loss is familiar: cut back on calories, carbohydrates and sugar while increasing cardiovascular output; develop a regular routine of healthy eating and exercise so that it becomes a lifestyle. Chubby puppies lead to chubby adult dogs. It may seem cute to watch your puppy waddle around like a beached whale after a meal but it leads to obesity quickly. If a puppy is overfed at every meal it will expect it as an adolescent dog and will always give you a look that you will interpret as it being starving. Soon you feel bad that your dog “looks” hungry (hunger is a feeling, not a look), feed it more than necessary and soon you have a fat adult dog. An unhealthy body weight leads to increased vet bills and an early death. When you think about how much you adore your dog it is a shame to think something like unhealthy weight management (which is preventable) is what caused their early demise.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY
Eagles win season-opener Highlanders drop late decision in hard-fought AAA contest
Benjamin Alldritt balldritt@nsnews.com
Benjamin Alldritt
IT’S already been an eventful new year for several of the North Shore’s professional hockey players.
balldritt@nsnews.com
WITH both sides depleted by injury, Carson Graham’s senior boys basketball team ground out a 57-50 win against West Vancouver secondary in the two teams’ AAA seasonopener Jan. 4.

“Both teams probably have a lot more in store for the next time around,” said Carson Graham coach Michael Morgan. “We’ll take what we can from it, but I think both teams know it’s going to look pretty different later on.” The Eagles got on to an early lead, but foul trouble reversed the advantage in a physical, error-ridden contest. Trailing in the final minutes, Carson fought to tie it up and were rewarded by a basket from the right baseline from Simon Tesfaldet, a shot that stood up as the game winner. Nik Termansen added insurance points as the clock ran out. “We had guys who haven’t been playing step up and make big plays and play in different aspects of the game,” Morgan said. “Simon had the confidence to take the shot late in the game, and a lot of guys would have passed that up. We needed someone to score and he did.” Morgan credited his players with adapting to new roles while they wait to get back to full strength, and singled out Kevin Arkoncel’s three-point shooting. “That’s a major difference. Their defence was very good and he got free a couple of times and knocked in a couple threes.” “We’ve got to get healthy,” Morgan said of the path forward for Carson. “That’s the No. 1 thing right now. We can’t really do much until we’ve got all of our guys back.” It was a tough loss for the Highlanders, but one that left co-coach Chris Sumner with a clear picture of what needs tuning up for his side. “The key difference was that Carson shot 65 per cent from the free shot line, we shot 33 per cent,” he said. “That’s going to kill you in

CARSON Graham’s Nik Termansen shows off some serious intensity as he drives to the basket during the Eagles’ 57-50 win over the West Van Highlanders. the long run. Both teams turned the ball over a lot. We turned it over 30 times. That’s a heckuva lot. Mind you they turned it over 25 times.” While Sumner gave full credit to the Eagles for their intensity and defensive play, he said West Van has to be smarter about holding on to the ball and keeping to the team strategy of low-scoring, defensive-minded play. “You want to run when there are opportunities, but you certainly don’t want to run when those opportunities aren’t there,” he said. “We’ve thrown the ball away unnecessarily or gotten a traveling violation because a player is trying to do more
than he should. When you play Carson there’s not a lot of time and space out there, so when you try to speed things up you’re going to turn the ball over or you’re going to travel.” But for a side with only three returning players, Sumner was pleased to see the work ethic his team showed. “The most important thing that we take out as coaches is that effort is never a question for us. Touch wood on that, but it hasn’t been a issue for us. Our kids work exceptionally hard. We don’t quit. Defensively, we’re doing a heckuva job and if we continue to do that, we’re going to win some games.”
NS NEWS SPORTSWEEK VIDEO ONLINE — NOW PLAYING HIGHLIGHTS from JAN 1 - 8
Carson Graham will host highly regarded Argyle on Wednesday, Jan. 12 in the Balmoral building, while West Vancouver visits Argyle Tuesday, Jan. 18. In AA action, the Windsor Dukes beat the Seycove Seyhawks 64-52 at home and Sutherland’s Sabres coasted to an 83-43 drubbing of Elphinstone. In senior girls basketball, West Vancouver fell 49-47 to Windsor and Sutherland edged Howe Sound 41-37 in Division One play. The three-team premier division opens its six-game season Tuesday, Jan. 11, with Carson Graham visiting Argyle.
In NHL action, North Vancouver-raised David Jones produced some heroics for his Colorado Avalanche team Jan. 4, scoring an overtime goal to lift the Avs over the Buffalo Sabres 4-3. Jones’ one-timer beat Sabres’ and American Olympic team goalie Ryan Miller with 43 seconds remaining. It was Jones’ first career overtime goal. He has 13 goals and 23 points this season. On the same day, North Vancouver-born hockey player Trevor Smith was traded from the Anaheim Ducks to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 25-year-old centreman was assigned to the Jackets’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Falcons. In 35 games this season with the Anaheim affiliate team, the Syracuse Crunch, Smith notched 12 goals, 15 assists and 16 penalty minutes. Four of those goals were tallied in his farewell game. A product of North Vancouver minor hockey, Smith made his first NHL appearance as a New York Islander in 2008 and played seven games for the Eastern Conference team, scoring his lone NHL goal against Calgary Flames keeper Miikka Kiprusoff. Local media in Springfield see the six-foot-one, 195-lb Smith as a vital missing piece for the Falcons, who have lost several one-goal games this season and are currently battling for a playoff spot in the AHL Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Defenceman Nate Guerin heads to Anaheim in return. Elsewhere in the AHL, North Vancouver’s Martin Jones was lights-out in goal for the Atlantic Division-leading Manchester Monarchs. Jones is coming out of a fantastic 2010, when he was a World Junior Championships silver medallist and was also named the Canadian Hockey League goaltender of the year while playing for the Calgary See Jones page 26

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Remain ambitious. You see things wisely, your “executive decisions” are good. The barrier that appeared last week (refusal/ competition from another?) is not gone, but you’re moving beyond it. Retreat, rest and plan future actions Sunday. Your energy surges Monday to Wednesday – you’ll need it to run the gauntlet of barriers and problems that face you – give it a heroic try! It ends with a comforting message or thought. Chase money (or buy important items) Thursday/Friday – smooth luck accompanies you. Saturday brings talks, trips, casual friends – and starts six weeks of social joy! Taurus April 20-May 20: You’re making some of the most important contacts of this decade, over the last year and this month. Be sociable, say hello, join new groups and clubs. Strictly avoid legal hassles this week. Take care with “big money” Sunday to Wednesday – unrealistic hopes could lead you astray. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness soar Wednesday night through pre-dawn Saturday – a good time to socialize, join that new group, or whisper words of love to someone! Chase money, shop, sell items Saturday. Friday starts six weeks of possible friction with bosses, parents – be humble, not sassy! Gemini May 21-June 20: This week contains yes’s and no’s. The biggest “no” occurs Tuesday and Friday in investment, large money, power, clout and sexual areas. (Especially if these also involve legal, international, intellectual and cultural arenas.) The yes’s? In work, health, career Monday to Wednesday and Saturday: commitment equals eventual winning! If you have to choose between love, creativity and risk on one side and big money, clout, power, sexual magnetism on the other, choose love, creativity, risk: they control the environment right now. Your finances need change, but not expansion. You’re loved.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships: partnerships, marriage, exciting prospects if single – and on opportunities, opposition, litigation, negotiation, relocation. Be patient if a legal matter gets in the way of a work project before Thursday: this barrier should fade by late month or March. Recent relationship intensity will lighten Saturday onward. This day starts a six-week period of investment in your career (via money, time, commitment, any of these). But avoid “pure investments” these six weeks – they might “burn cash.” Thursday/Friday bring social delights! Retreat, rest, plan Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Another 11 days of work and health drudgery. But this trend is relieved by a nice, buoyant romantic breeze. After Saturday, too, life becomes so exciting you’ll forget that work surrounds you! However, you probably have lots of unfinished chores “hanging fire” after a few weeks of neglect or misdirected efforts. Focus on those now, briskly clear away as much as you can. Don’t mix sex and romance before Thursday, nor creativity and “building,” nor investment and a gambling urge. Be ambitious, seek out higher-ups Thursday/Friday – luck accompanies you. Saturday brings social joys! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The emphasis lies on romance, creative urges, speculation and a love of “risk,” children’s affairs, pleasure and beauty. You’re riding a winning streak! But don’t expect a lot of cooperation from spouse, others, regarding any property, security or family notion you have. They’ll only join in if there is an ambitious angle for them. Don’t try to seal any deals before Thursday. Though two weeks remain in this romantic phase, you’ll need to make your bid for intimacy now, as Saturday ends a long “sexual magnetism” streak. (Another, life-changing one comes Nov. 11 to July 2012.)
604-630-3300 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The main accent lies on family, home, security, real estate, gardening, nutrition, Mother Nature. This area faces significant (world-changing) transformations now to 2024. This week (and the past five) domestic conditions fight your partnership yearnings. E.g., you live in different cities, or your place is such a mess you fear to invite anyone home, or “Mommy” lives on the couch. However, Saturday eases this: you start six weeks of heightened romantic prospects and intensity. This leads to a February-June blooming of splendid relationship luck, and in turn to eight years of love excitement. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Paperwork, details, communications, errands – you have a lot of small chores to perform. You’ll do them easily. Your money luck improves. Buy a gift for a loved one. Sunday’s romantic. Tackle chores Monday to Wednesday – but avoid money topics, or chasing money. Relationships inspire, attract, open doors to success Wednesday night to Saturday pre-dawn. Be outgoing, eager, diplomatic – love could shine! Saturday brings mysteries, financial and sexual opportunities. This day begins six weeks of possible domestic friction – channel this energy into repairs or build a new job “base.” Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Continue to chase money. You might have to make some decisions or pronouncements about home, family, real estate – you’re still ultra-lucky here to Jan. 21. Buying a new home is favoured Jan. 9, 10 (before 2 p.m. PST) 13,14, 15, 19 (to 1:30 p.m.) 20 and 21. Money continues to flow beside you – bringing more, but prompting you to spend more. Sunday’s for home, family. Romance, creative projects, speculation call you Monday dawn to Wednesday eve. Tackle chores and health issues Thursday/Friday: you’ll succeed easily! Exciting meetings, opportunities Saturday.
NEW
Buying or Renting, find a great place to call home.
Jan. 9 - Jan. 16 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma, pizzazz and effectiveness ride high! Make contacts and satisfy your curiosity, especially Sunday. Get out all week, chase, begin important projects. Demand an end to unfair or stale situations Monday to Wednesday. Romance, creative surges, speculative urges and pleasure visit you Wednesday night to Saturday predawn. Tackle chores Saturday. This day, a long period of determination and sexual magnetism ends; this was a complex “gift,” for it also nudged you toward the end of many things. Most things existing before 2008 are ripe for ending. Soon – the new! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to rest. Lie low, contemplate people and situations, and make plans. Be charitable. Deal with government agencies, institutions, corporate head offices. This week and next are your last “opening” for a while to make a major purchase or launch a lucky earnings vehicle. Sunday is particularly good for this. (But DON’T buy high-tech, electronics, etc. before Thursday.) Talks, trips and casual friends fill Monday-Wednesday. Deal with family, real estate Thursday/Friday – luck accompanies you. Starting Saturday, you’ll be active, magnetic and determined, for six weeks! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Bosses, parents and higher-ups treat you with new approval or affection for the rest of January. Take advantage – socialize, schmooze. Money often flows along “networks.” Your energy remains high Sunday. Be ambitious Monday to Wednesday, especially in the pursuit of money. (These are not really good purchasing days, though, nor for gaining the co-operation of your equals/peers.) Casual friends, siblings, communications and travel fill Thursday/Friday – all is smooth, easy! Settle into a “down home” weekend Saturday. This day starts six weeks of secret money plans or “charity money.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Q.
My husband has had arthritis for some time, and has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. He’s frustrated he can’t do things he used to enjoy. Can you suggest any resources on the North Shore that could help us? Chronic illness has a profound effect on the physical, emotional and mental well being of individuals, often making it difficult to carry on with daily routines and relationships. You and your husband may benefit from a workshop being presented at the Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre on Thursday January 13th on common chronic diseases and how to cope with them. Learn how to make good choices in preventing and treating chronic disease. Call Silver Harbour to register: 604-980-2474.
