Police respond to threat at Argyle Niamh Scallan nscallan@nsnews.com

NORTH Vancouver’s Argyle secondary was under police surveillance Friday after threatening graffiti was found on a bathroom wall Thursday evening.

RCMP officers were called to the scene to investigate. Officers and school staff determined the graffiti to be a low-level threat and classes remained open for the day. But officers remained at the school for the duration of the day to “keep people calm,” said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Peter DeVries. He said the graffiti was “threatening, but not directed at any specific person or group,” and officers were investigating the case as a possible result of bullying. “It seemed to be a cry for help and for us, that’s a concern,” he said. “We want victims of bullying to come forward. “We know that it can be extremely stressful for youth See Bullying page 5

NV bank manager takes down robber

Tessa Holloway

tholloway@nsnews.com

IT’S usually just a matter of time before a bank robber gets caught, but one North Vancouver bank manager wasn’t ready to wait.

When a man walked in and handed a note to the teller at Bank of Montreal on Esplanade at Lonsdale on Tuesday for the second time in as many weeks and walked out the door with an undisclosed amount of cash, bank manager Stan Yee and another employee took matters into their own hands, chasing the man on foot to Lonsdale Quay. There, the alleged robber jumped into a cab, so the duo jumped

in front of the car, stopped the driver and explained what was going on. That was the end of the road for 36-year-old Gabriel Court Williams, a resident of Mission. “All three of them pinned him down and held him until police arrived,” said North Vancouver RCMP spokesman Const. Peter DeVries, heaping praise on Yee while trying, at least a little, to mask his enthusiasm. “I would challenge anyone to find a police officer who wouldn’t

feel satisfaction knowing that somebody in the community stood up to a bank robber and stopped them,” he said. “Bank robbery is kind of an archetype of right versus wrong in our society, and it’s a very bold testament when a citizen stands up, or citizens stand together, and stop a crime like this from happening.” That said, he cautioned that people should be careful when putting themselves in harm’s way to do the job police are paid to do. “There’s no question that doing something like this — stopping a bank robber and chasing after him — is dangerous. It really is,” said DeVries in a note of caution. “A lot of times bank robbers See Suspect page 5

B.C. aphrodisiac contains cadmium

North Vancouver ecotoxicologist warns that eating too many oysters is hazardous to health James Weldon jweldon@nsnews.com

IN an obscure corner of the B.C. Centre for Disease Control’s website is a startling but little-known fact: When it comes to the contaminant cadmium, eating a single B.C. farmed oyster is equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes.

It’s unlikely many people are aware of this when they slurp down a plateful of the popular delicacy. That’s something Leah Bendell wants to change. Bendell, a North Vancouver resident and ecotoxicologist at Simon Fraser University, has been studying contamination in British Columbia’s marine organisms for more than 10 years. In that time, she and other researchers in her field have amassed a wealth of evidence suggesting that shellfish farmed in our waters — oysters and whole scallops, specifically — contain dangerously high levels of cadmium and, as she outlined in an article published last year, the public has no idea they are at risk. Cadmium, similar chemically to mercury, is a toxic metal used in a range of products from batteries to fungicides. Like mercury or lead, it can build up in the body over time, especially in the kidneys, and appears to cause a host of health problems. Recent studies have linked cadmium to breast cancer, prostate cancer, renal failure and osteoporosis. Although the risk the metal poses received relatively little attention in the past, it has gained notoriety recently in the wake of a series of public health scandals, including Walmart’s recall of a line of children’s jewelry in January last year and another by McDonald’s of 13 million promotional Shrek glasses in June. Although the government has made little fuss about it, Ottawa has been aware of the problem with B.C. oysters since 2001, when several shipments were rejected by Hong Kong after three random screening tests there had turned up cadmium levels above Hong Kong’s two-parts-per-million cutoff — and well above the European Union’s limit of 1 p.p.m. “When they realized that market wouldn’t be available because of high cadmium, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency was pulled in to find out what in general they were dealing with . . . and (the Department of Fisheries and Oceans) was asked to find the source.” DFO tapped Bendell and her team to figure out where the toxin was coming from in the hope the source could be eliminated or avoided. Finding that answer turned out to be no easy task. “We all naively and optimistically launched into this project, a three-year project looking at spatial and temporal variations in cadmium in shellfish,” she said. “The industry didn’t want anything to do with it and did their best to shut us down.” Over that period, and in the face of opposition, Bendell’s team measured cadmium in the flesh of oysters and in the matter they consume at locations up and down the coast. The picture that emerged was far from simple. “We got evidence that some of it is coming from (the oysters’) food, some of it from the water (itself),” said Bendell. “We can’t identify one particular source.” It’s possible the levels are largely unrelated to human activity, she said. Our part of the Pacific Ocean contains about seven times more dissolved cadmium per unit of volume than the Atlantic, simply as a result of the movement of currents. Bendell and other researchers have shown the element seems to spike in the Pacific northwest — in Alaska and British Columbia especially — and decline as one heads south. Ocean currents, however, may not be the only factor. “There’s a little bit of a hint that it’s coming from mining, . . . mining dust and so on,” said Bendell. “Just a hint — enough to raise your eyebrows and say: ‘Hmmm, that might be important.’” The Canadian Food Inspection Agency pegs the cadmium concentration in an average B.C. oyster at 2.6 p.p.m., although researchers have found them with as little as 1.2 p.p.m. and as much as 3.6 p.p.m. With levels in that range, the consensus among Bendell’s colleagues is that consumers should limit themselves to one oyster per week. Health Canada doesn’t quite agree. In 2002, the ministry introduced a monthly recommended limit of 12 oysters per month for healthy adults and about 1.5 per month for children, but it’s possible that guideline will be tightened soon, said Bendell. A spokeswoman for the ministry, corresponding with the North Shore News by email, confirmed that’s a possibility. “(We’re) currently in the process of reviewing the latest scientific information on cadmium toxicity and data made available (in 2010)

NEWS photo Mike Wakefield

LEAH Bendell, a North Vancouver resident and ecotoxicologist at Simon Fraser University, is concerned about the consumption of oysters with high levels of cadmium found in some areas along the B.C. coast. on cadmium levels in B.C. shellfish,” said the spokeswoman. “Once that assessment is completed, we will be reviewing the existing consumption advice to determine if any changes are warranted.” But whether they’re changing or not, in Bendell’s view the agency does too little to advertise the fact there is a guideline at all. A search of the Health Canada website turns up a document entitled “Food safety facts on bivalve shellfish in British Columbia,” posted in 2003, which touches on the issue. Much of the document deals with shellfish poisoning and cooking instructions, but partway down it does mention cadmium, saying that elevated levels of the element have been found in B.C. oysters and whole scallops. “Chronic exposure to elevated levels of cadmium over an extended period of time may result in damage to the kidneys, although there is no scientific evidence linking health effects to naturally occurring cadmium found in shellfish,” according to the document. Several sections down, it provides consumption guidelines:

“Health Canada recommends that the consumption of B.C. oysters be limited to 460 grams per month for adults and to 60 grams per month for children.” The agency doesn’t say on its site how many oysters that works out to be. It was the spokeswoman who translated it into numbers of oysters on inquiries by the North Shore News. The document doesn’t mention anything about consumption for higher-risk groups, either. A consumer would have to visit the B.C. Centre for Disease Control’s site for that information. The provincial agency defers to Health Canada where it comes to recommended oyster intake for typical consumers, but it notes certain individuals should be even more cautious. These include smokers, who tend to have high cadmium already because of the chemical’s presence in cigarette smoke, shellfish harvesters and coastal First Nations, who tend to eat large numbers of oysters and whole scallops, and people with diabetes or renal disease who may already have kidney problems. Larson French immersion parents seek feeder talk with NVSD Niamh Scallan

nscallan@nsnews.com

THE future of Larson elementary’s French immersion students is yet to be decided after the school district heeded the calls of distressed parents and pulled back on its decision to shuffle the students’ feeder schools. “The school district has made the decision to relook at this issue, and we’ll be consulting further with the Larson French immersion community in the coming weeks,” said Joanne Robertson, director of instruction and learning services for the North Vancouver school district. The school district decided early January to redirect Larson students from Handsworth secondary to Argyle secondary. The decision followed a recommendation made by the district’s French immersion advisory committee last November. The committee advised the district to send Larson French

immersion students to Argyle as a way to increase that secondary school’s enrolment numbers and balance enrolment across the district. District members held an information session for Larson parents on Jan. 6 regarding the changes. And in a Jan. 14 letter to Larson parents, the district stated that Larson students would be sent to Argyle beginning in September 2012. The letter added that the district will accept requests from parents who “wish to have special consideration” for transfer requests to Handsworth. But parents of Larson elementary students in the French immersion program rallied against the school board, stating that the school district failed to include them in the consultation process. The parents wrote a letter to the board and started an online petition calling on board members to reconsider the decision. “People know that a school district is not always going to be run at their convenience,” said Trevor Wiebe, father of a Grade 1 Larson student. “But what is really upsetting to people is that this process just seems like a banana republic process. Larson parents were shut out of the process entirely.” The school district has heeded the parents’ concerns and will consult with Larson parents when it reviews its French immersion plans in the coming weeks.

Bullying a concern for police From page 1 who are the victims of bullying and we’re hoping that they are comfortable enough to come forward.” The North Vancouver school district sent a news release home with students, notifying parents of the incident. Police ask any Argyle students with information about the incident to call RCMP. “The bottom line is if this person is being bullied, we just want to help them,” said DeVries. “We know it’s a serious issue.”

carry weapons — knives, guns — and it’s impossible to know how somebody who just committed a crime, presumably out of desperation, might react when being stopped by two people.” Williams is facing one charge of robbery already, and police have recommended four other charges to Crown counsel for

unrelated incidents, including the robbery of the same Bank of Montreal location just one week prior to his arrest. DeVries said the solve rate for bank robberies is usually very high — it just takes time. “Almost always they eventually get caught, and usually it’s through things like intelligence,” said DeVries, who listed cameras as one tool police use.

T’S going to be difficult to notice when we actually do have a federal election, seeing as the campaigning has carried on so interminably since at least 2006. A half decade of pointless namecalling later, the stories are still the same. Liberals say the Conservatives are a bunch of ogres with all sorts of nefarious schemes ready to hatch should they win a majority, and the Tories say Grit leader Michael Ignatieff is a opportunistic dilettante ready to leap into bed with whatever socialists and separatists will help him pursue the amusing hobby called leading our nation. Both Ignatieff and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have been busy lately trying to debunk these notions, with Ignatieff bringing his best hand-shaking populism to targeted ridings, and

you said it “I want to prove to people who don’t think much of me that I’m better than what they think of me.” WVPD Const. Griffin Gillan says he wants to regain the community’s trust after drunkenly assaulting newspaper carrier Firoz Khan in 2009 (from a Jan. 19 news story). ••• “Based on the evidence, and contrary to Kash Heed’s statements, I believe that (he) is not telling the whole truth.” RCMP E-Division Sgt. John Taylor alleges that former WVPD chief Kash Heed illegally paid campaign workers with public money after the 2009 election. Heed denies any wrongdoing (from a Jan. 21 news story). ••• “Wally is getting on and needs to be put out to pasture, maybe a stud, maybe not. You have a stallion that has been in training for some time and you and everyone else know he’s winner but he can’t wait on the sidelines forever.” In an email to a political aide later seized by the RCMP, then WVPD chief Kash Heed is impatient to take over the attorney general’s office from Wally Oppal (from a Jan 21 news story).

Harper sitting down with the CBC to insist his sleeves are free of surprises. Of course they both took the opportunity to say nasty things about each other too. It is an occupational hazard of this constant semi-election, but it’s disappointing that our public figures still can’t find it in themselves to be civil. Trash the policy, but not the person. We all respect athletes for being gracious with their competitors, so why can’t we demand this of our public figures? Our failure to do so is what has led to this dumbing-down of our debate. Harper and Ignatieff are both supremely talented people who have done much they can be proud of in their lives. Both will be remembered as great Canadians. But it would be a surpassing achievement if they could publicly acknowledge this in each other.

Solicitor general stands behind forfeiture process

Dear Editor: I am writing in response to the January 12 editorial, Unreasonable Doubt. The editorial suggests that a civil forfeiture action is pursued outside the court system, and solely at the discretion of the province and police. In reality, the province or police cannot seize property. The courts play a vital and pivotal role in civil forfeiture actions. The law merely allows the director to make an application, based on evidence, to B.C. Supreme Court for an order preserving or “freezing” the property pending trial, or for an ultimate order of forfeiture. It is also worth noting that a civil forfeiture action, like any legal action, is open to challenge at every stage of the process. At the end of the day, a forfeiture order is only possible where the government proves to a judge that property is the proceeds or an instrument of unlawful activity. Whether a decision is reached in a courtroom or through negotiation, ultimately, a Supreme Court order is the final step in a fair and due process — one that has withstood all court challenges to date. Rich Coleman Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General (Editor: The editorial in question did not suggest that civil forfeiture is pursued outside the court system entirely. It pointed out that forfeiture takes place in civil court rather than criminal court, and that those whose property is seized do not have to be facing any criminal charges in order for the province to step in and apply for forfeiture. Yes, property owners can argue the process before a judge, but only after an application to forfeit has already been made by the province. It is also worth noting that the standard of proof in civil court — a “balance of probabilities” is much lower than the criminal courts’ “beyond a reasonable doubt.”)

In which I become Lord of the Moths

THIS week’s topic is moths. Or, more specifically, the moths I found about six weeks ago in my dry goods cupboard.

Before I get into the particulars of the story, let me preface what I’m about to say with this: My home is a clean place. By male standards, anyway. It’s not perfect, I admit. If one dropped a donated kidney under the bed, one would be wise to wash it (or at least blow it off) before implanting it. And, as a recent houseguest/ ingrate pointed out to me, there’s a place behind the stereo where the dust bunnies don’t need to be swept up so much as euthanized. But on the whole, I think I keep a pretty tidy shop. I vacuum regularly. I wipe the counters. I throw out my milk while it can still get out through the hole. I’ve come extremely close, on several occasions, to cleaning my blinds. I say this because I don’t want the following moderately alarming anecdote to leave readers with the impression that my residence is anything short of more or less passable hygiene. So here goes. I was in my kitchen about six weeks ago, doing what I normally do in my kitchen: minding my own business. I reached for

Rough Copy

James Weldon something delicious in my dry goods cupboard — a cup of flour or whatever — and was rendered nearly incontinent by an explosion of tiny but frightening moths. Now, as someone who was raised in a household with three accomplished dogs and whose cooking derives almost entirely from Britain, I like to think I have a high tolerance for gross. But these things blew my threshold right out of the water, for lack of a more mixed metaphor. Any scientist will tell you that insects, of all the members of the animal kingdom, are by far the most nasty. It’s something to do with the fact they’re so fundamentally different from us, with their exoskeletons and their compound eyes and their work ethic. I don’t have to tell you I would have reacted pretty differently had I found my

cupboard crawling with horses. Even another species of insect wouldn’t have been as bad. Big, fuzzy honeybees for example, or a single googlyeyed green worm with glasses and a mortarboard hat. But moths. Sick. And in such profusion. This wasn’t, like, a moth or two interrupted while they were playing a quiet game of cards. This was something out of the Book of Revelation. I didn’t really have time to get an accurate headcount, but I’m going to ballpark the number — conservatively — at a billion billion. It was easily enough moths to skeletonize a cow. Assuming the cow were made of something moths like to eat. Old business suits or whatever. Naturally, as any grown man would, I reacted by shrieking like a startled Teletubby and running from the room. Then, after taking a moment or two to gather myself, to let the pulse slow and to stop clawing at my eyes and whatnot, I returned to the kitchen to take stock of my predicament. Despite my hiding in the living room for several minutes, they were still there. Or at least, like, nine of them were. Here’s where the existentialism comes in. I’m a naturally, instinctively non-violent person. I was the kid who would capture

mosquitoes alive and release them back to the wild (read: my sister’s room). I was the six-year-old who wanted to see Optimus Prime and Megatron work things out over a cup of coffee. But as I watched those little monstrosities walking smugly upside down on my ceiling, flying with such an obvious sense of entitlement face first into my lamps, I was overcome with rage. What business did moths have in my relatively clean apartment? Where the hell had they come from? It turns out, oddly, they had come from my paprika. Who eats paprika? I don’t even eat paprika. That might have been part of the problem. I snatched up a copy of what turned out to be the Presbyterian Record — an un-cancelled subscription of the previous tenant’s whose only redeeming quality, as a publication, is that it’s harder than moths — and over the next half hour or so, overcome with bloodlust, tracked down each insect individually and put a violent end to it. Later, as I stood in my kitchen covered in chitin and staring in dull horror at my stained but nonetheless still boring magazine, I had a moment of introspection. How could I, someone so opposed to killing even the smallest creature, have done such a thing with such relish?

No matter how I looked at it, I had to admit to myself that that little pogrom had been awesome. I felt the kind of cathartic satisfaction I imagine Clark Kent would if he finally went up to that guy who cut him off in traffic and tore his car in half. But then another thought occurred to me. Maybe this wasn’t such a bad thing. Maybe I had tapped into a side of myself, an animalistic, aggressive piece of my character that needed to be let out more often. Maybe it was something to be admired. I’m not entirely sure it’s a theory others agree with. When I told a female friend of mine the story, that there had been enough moths in my apartment to skeletonize a cow made of business suits and that I had ground them into my walls with a rolled up copy of the Presbyterian Record, I wasn’t convinced it was admiration that I saw in her face. Or if it was, it was the kind of qualified admiration that makes one wrinkle up one’s nose and make a theatrical gagging sound.

There are lots of health benefits to eating shellfish, and they’re grown in what is overall a very clean environment. “While we might have higher cadmium on the west coast of Canada, I think it’s offset by how tightly regulated our food industry is here — especially shellfish — and how pristine and clean our water is,” said Stevenson. “If you were going to eat an oyster, would you want one from Hong Kong harbour? photo Ian Smith / Vancouver Sun They have a lot of nerve complaining AN oyster farmer near Tofino on Vancouver about our cadmium.” Unlike other resource industries in Island pulls a string of oysters for harvesting. AS reported previously, this pedestrian overpass on Marine Drive at Park Royal is to be demolished. An at-grade, signal-controlled intersection will be built in its place.

PARK Royal’s plan to replace a vehicle and pedestrian overpass on Marine Drive with an atgrade intersection will have far-ranging impacts — for cars, transit, the mall property and for the intersection at Taylor and Marine Drive, according to the municipality.

Debate on the plan, which was passed at council late last year, focused on the proposed new at-grade intersection and crosswalk, which will replace the existing pedestrian overpass next to Park Royal Towers. What wasn’t mentioned in previous North Shore News stories was that the westernmost vehicle overpass will also be torn down, and traffic as well as pedestrians will instead use a traffic light-controlled atgrade intersection between the existing overpass and McDonald’s in order to both cross Marine Drive and turn onto it. Construction is planned for this summer. The eastern vehicle overpass will remain. Depending on who you talk to, it’s either a long-term traffic solution or a big headache for drivers. According to Rick Amantea, vice-president of Park Royal Shopping Centre, the ’70s-era vehicle overpass wasn’t designed to handle increasing traffic loads, is difficult for pedestrians with disabilities, is confusing to drivers and is an eyesore. “I’m going to use the word ugly, because they are,” he said, describing both overpasses. Amantea said the mall plans to beautify the street once the work is done, and that the plan won’t significantly affect east-west traffic. “The new intersection will

allow a better movement of traffic from north to south with the shopping centre.” An at-grade intersection will also allow for an easier manoeuvre for transit vehicles and more space for a layover, said Amantea, as well as improved access for emergency vehicles, which have difficulty with the existing overpass. According to traffic modelling ordered by Park Royal and included in the October report to council, vehicles turning onto Marine Drive from Park Royal will save an average of 18 seconds. The new intersection will also divert traffic away from the already-congested Taylor Way intersection. Westboundthrough-traffic, however, will face an average 28-second delay because of the lights, according to the report, with an average backlog of four to five cars at each light. In the worst case scenario, cues of 30 cars could back up as far as the existing pedestrian signal in the westbound lane and to almost the edge of the Village in the eastbound lane, it says. West Vancouver resident Leslie Pratt said the municipality should conduct its own report after construction is finished. “It’s going to be absolute gridlock going downtown in the evening (when Park Royal shops close),” she said. “I think council is naive to think that Park Royal is going to commission a traffic study in the interests of residents.” Coun. Bill Soprovich, who put forward a motion in December to block the demolition of the two structures, said the issue See New page 11

New intersection could tie to new Low Level Rd. From page 10 should have waited until after the construction work near the Lions Gate Bridge is finished and a second study of traffic impacts was done. Soprovich said the overpass works well and the new arrangement will tie up people entering and leaving West Vancouver. “It’s our road. It doesn’t belong to Park Royal,” he said. “I would like (council) to wait.” Director of engineering Raymond Fung said the municipality is taking traffic concerns into account when liaising with Park Royal on the design, and will look carefully at signal phasing so that traffic moves as quickly as possible. Staff supported the changes, he said, because they fit with their long-term plans and because traffic impacts

will be minimal. “The simulation models confirm there would be minimal, if any, impact onto that east-west movement,” said Fung, who said the issue isn’t scheduled to come back before council. West Vancouver hopes the new intersection could link up with the so-far unfunded plans for an improved LowLevel road connection to North Vancouver and a new bridge over Capilano River, which could help divert 500 to 600 vehicles per hour from the Taylor Way and Marine Drive intersection. The intersection upgrade will extend to other areas of Park Royal. Amantea said the four-way stop beside Home Depot will be redesigned at the same time to improve pedestrian and vehicle movement, and the existing left-turn lane into Park Royal

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to ACTIVE LIVING

Take the 30-day yoga challenge

Lower Lonsdale studio’s next session starts Feb. 1 Manisha Krishnan mkrishnan@nsnews.com

WE’RE almost a month into the new year and it’s time to take a look at how well those resolutions are holding up.

NICK Walkley participates in a recent class at North Vancouver’s Yogapod. Physical challenges aside, there’s a big time commitment involved. Luckily, classes are open from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. most days; you just have to squeeze one in whenever it’s convenient.

Yogapod’s next 30-day challenge runs Feb 1-March 2. An orientation meeting will take place Thursday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m., at the studio, located at 101-260 West Esplanade St. The cost is $108. Info: www.yogapod.com.

As always, drinking less, saving more cash and quitting smoking are at the top of our lists, along with the ever-present desire to get in shape. Like many, you may have signed up at the gym — and that could very well have been the last time you entered it. If the latter rings true, consider trying something different this year. Yoga is both physically demanding and deeply spiritual, and when you’re practising it, it really feels like you’re taking time out for you (which may even be another one of your resolutions). If you’ve only done yoga a couple of times before, or maybe never at all, doing a 30-day challenge is a great way to kick things off. No, I’m not crazy. A couple of months ago I tried it myself at North Vancouver’s Yogapod. The rules are pretty straightforward: practise yoga at least once a day for 30 days in a row. You can skip once a week but you must double-up on another day. You can also practise at a different studio once a week. Week one was a rude awakening. It didn’t help that I started off in a hot tragically hips class after a late night — sweating profusely in a 40 C room while dehydrated is not a good time. Needless to say, I quit drinking for the rest of the challenge and it wasn’t as tough as I thought it would be. It was actually kind of a relief for my body and, frankly, my budget. As things progressed, I got a feel for the different classes. Yin meditation is slow and balanced, with each posture being held for a few minutes. It’s a great way to unwind. Vinyasa flow and anusara-inspired seemed similar to me: both worked with sequences of postures and breath. We did partner work in a couple of anusara classes, which was a nice change of pace. One of my biggest fears as a newbie stepping into a yoga class was being surrounded by gorgeous, Lululemon-sporting women who would secretly smirk at my awkward down dogs and wobbly eagle pose. The first part of that came true, but I found nothing but support from instructors and classmates. Most of the time everyone was deep in concentration, attuned only to their personal practises. Power yoga, which I did a few times at a downtown studio, is an intense, fast-paced workout that will leave you feeling strong and invigorated. And hot, as aforementioned, will leave you sweating like a racehorse, but in a good way. A detoxifying, 500-1,000 calories burned way. So, did I finish the challenge? Hell yeah. But it wasn’t easy. There were days when I felt sick or tired, but laying in child’s pose is always an option. You can also talk to the instructor about working on a specific area like the hips or back. Plus, the benefits were well worth all the hard work. I felt happier, healthier and tighter — in every area — and my clothes fit better. By the end of my 30 days I could almost do a handstand. Well, I had attempted it at least.

At the bottom we hop back in the van and head to the Cypress downhill area. Even though it’s a weekday, the lot is filling up fast by eager skiers and boarders who have their priorities straight. Kim and I head up the Lion Express High Speed Quad Chair and make a sharp left onto Gibsons Run. The powder is amazing and we head into the gladed trees to enjoy. Back at the chair there’s still no line-up and in three minutes we’re whisked back up top where we hit the tree stashes of Moons. The fresh

QUESTION:

My husband has a very busy, high-powered job. I know he is busy, but I really want him to commit to helping me more at home and assisting with getting the children to their activities, etc. If he happens to be home, he will go and pick them up, but will not agree to pick them up consistently (for example, basketball practice every Thursday at 7 p.m.). How can I make him see that he needs to do more to help? Answer: In therapy we often reframe questions for our clients so that they can view their situation differently and this is where I will start with your question. You are saying, “How can I make him see that he needs to do more to help?” and what I think you are really asking me is, “How can I make him do something I want him to do, but he clearly doesn’t want to do?” The answer to your reframed question is you can’t. However, what you can do and what I would suggest is that you sit down with him and begin to honestly assess what is important to both of you and what you want to prioritize. Let’s think about different aspects of your problem first. He has a highpowered job. I imagine that you both benefit from that in different ways. You likely have a nice income, a feeling

of success in your life and the respect of others. Would you give any of that up so that he can spend more time with you and the children? In my experience, many couples don’t realize that they can choose to make choices together about what is important rather than just getting swept along a stressful career path with no control. Women who have big jobs and children are grappling with these decisions all the time. Men can too. The second aspect of your problem relates to the type of role each of you want to have with your children. Again, the reason that having this conversation is important is because it forces both of you to be conscious about your decisions, their effect on each other and your children. It might be time to revisit the question of who you are as parents. Not because your husband has to do more, but he might want to do more

(like picking up his son from basketball practice) in order to have more connection with his children. It would be about him having more, not you having more. The other aspect of your problem may relate to whether the entire family has too much on its collective plate for anyone to handle, including your children. Anxiety is the No. 1 problem for children these days and many believe that it is the fact that they are overscheduled in activities. Are you and your children taking on too much? Maybe everyone needs to do a bit less? The final aspect I would highlight is the question of whether you are able to find time within your busy day to do things that are sustaining and relaxing for yourself. Sometimes we project onto

our partners what we really want for ourselves. Maybe your identifying that your husband is getting his needs met, really points to the fact that you need to find a way to get more of your own needs met. Start by asking yourself this question, “What can I do to make myself feel better?” Of course if the problems are running deeper in your relationship and your husband is avoiding time with you and your children for other reasons, then getting some professional help would be important. WORK

Buy-and-hold tactic outdated

THE stock market closed at a new twoyear high at the end 2010 and the question now is how much higher can it go?

There are many investors who remained on the side lines after the market collapsed in 2008/2009 and have been fearful ever since to put their hard-earned money back to work. One way to feel more confident about investing in the market is to find a manager that practices active management opposed to a more buy-and-hold strategy. I feel many investors hear these terms but often may not totally understand what an active manager really is. A buy and hold strategy is fairly straight forward and became famous in the ’90s. Remember the AIC mutual fund companies’ slogan, “Buy, Hold and Prosper”? In the ’90s it was easy to make money this way because the U.S. stock market averaged about 15 per cent annually. So investors could make money and brokers could go golfing and not really worry about making many changes to the portfolio because the

Making Cents

Lori Pinkowski only way the market seemed to go was up! Then in 2000, the Tech bubble burst and brought the high flying ’90s to an abrupt end. “Buy, Hold and Prosper” soon became “Buy, Hold and Lose Money” to those investors and financial advisors who didn’t take any action in their accounts during that time. Many investors demanded to know why their managers did not sell any stocks and just watched them move lower and lower and some never recovered again. Does Nortel ring a bell? An active manager may not always be right but at least they have a strategy that can help limit losses should markets correct, thus

helping investors sleep better at night. I believe in active management which will take into account using stop losses on stocks. This means that if a stock is moving lower and hits a certain level then that stock will be sold. If the market is moving higher then these managers also look to participate in that as well. Portfolio returns can more often be hurt not from what you buy but from what you don’t sell. We only use a handful of managers besides our own management because there are few managers out there that I feel I should allocate any of my clients’ money too. If they are more buy-andhold then why would I pay them for their inaction if this market volatility continues? One the best active managers I have ever seen, whom we use a lot for our client portfolios, is David Burrows of Barometer Capital. To put it in perspective, he was in 70 per cent cash before Lehman Brothers collapsed, thus avoiding the waterfall crash in 2008. Though past performance is not a guarantee of future results, the return of his Barometer

High Income portfolio has been 6.5 per cent in 2008, +29.30 per cent in 2009 and then again 22.89 per cent in 2010 (gross of fees). These returns were only possible if a manager was active, otherwise there would have been almost no way for buy and hold managers to achieve these type of returns. To put this in perspective, over the past three years he has made investors 14 per cent annually and the market is still down 10 per cent. The last decade, 2000 to 2010, saw two huge market corrections and I believe the market volatility will continue in 2011 and beyond. It is important to review your investment strategy and decide if it will bring your portfolio success in the next decade. TASTE

Getting past labelling ‘critter’ labels

IT seems not that long ago that the much maligned “critter” label (which fueled the worldwide success of the likes of Yellow Tail) was fast becoming an endangered species.

The crowing about critter labels has died down these days — although it was never an issue for John Davey, whose McLaren Vale Shingleback Shiraz (and other wines) garner plenty of attention on the awards circuit both at home and abroad. There’s a bit of a shift taking place in Shiraz circles these days, as the more overt, often over-the-top styles have started to take a back seat to more restrained — and, we would suggest, more foodfriendly interpretations. Shingleback Red Knot Shiraz ’08 delivers good regional value for (BCLS $19.99) with straight-on, up-front Aussie Shiraz style that wraps vanilla, cassis and black fruit in a balanced, juicy palate with a spicy end. Certainly not over the top. But highly approachable — and for drinking, not holding. It also boasts the nifty Zork closure, a plastic “cork” whose seal you can neatly twist off with two fingers. One of the best closures around, says the winemaker, who’s used them for five years now — very slightly breathable, and more environmentally friendly than screw caps. Bump it up a notch for the estate-grown Shingleback Shiraz ’06, which suggests some coffee-mocha notes on top before a generous,

mouth-filling palate that yields ripe red and black fruit, underpinned by good acidity with a well-integrated, easy tannin structure. We enjoyed it with Gramercy Grill’s plump, Salt Spring mussels in a mildly spicy tomato and chorizo filled broth: a convincingly good match. BCLS Specialty $29. As for the Shingleback itself (which features prominently on the estate wine labels), just like the wines, it’s not your average critter. The heavily scaled, stumpy-tailed lizard not only mates for life but also gives birth to live young — and, as the Daveys tell it — also will happily move into any available space a home can offer, as long as it’s quiet and comfortable and private! ■■■ This past week, the Hired Belly took in the HSBC Chinese restaurant awards. It was quite the gala affair, held at the River Rock Casino in Richmond — widely acknowledged as the epicentre of the great Chinese dining scene that we all enjoy. If there’s one minor deficiency that occasionally discourages heading out for Chinese food it can be a lack

photos Tim Pawsey

JOHN Davey’s Shingleback wines garner plenty of attention on the awards circuit at home in Australia and abroad. of interesting wine selections. Although, to be fair, the notion of food and wine is not indigenous to Chinese cuisine or culture. However, this is changing — especially with the arrival on the scene of edgy newcomers, such as Chinatown’s funky Bao Bei — picked as En Route magazine’s second best new restaurant in Canada. Among a veritable ocean of awards, the brasserie was the recipient of the award for service in food and wine — well deserved, and a great incentive to others. The award is sponsored by longestablished wine agent Select

Wines; and the wines they chose to pour at the reception were excellent examples of flexible and affordable drops that makes sense not only for a “starter” Chinese restaurant wine list but are also welcome additions to any home wine rack or fridge. As Select VP Werner Schonberger likes to remind us, Dr. Loosen “Dr. L” Riesling ’09 is the biggest seller in its category in Western Canada, and with good reason. This very fresh tasting, slightly off-dry, fruity and limey citrus toned wine makes for an appealing sipper, or obliging partner with gently spiced

Asian plates or, say, lemon chicken or pork dumplings. Think Edam and Gouda, too. A great “starter” Riesling if you’ve never tried one before. BCLS $18.99 We’ve long been a fan of the even more affordable Little Yering Pinot Noir ’08 (Yarra Valley). It’s still likely the best Pinot deal around: light to medium bodied but quite mouth-filling, with appealing cherry, strawberry and savoury with a touch of oak. It’s also a slam dunk for the likes of mushroom-filled tofu dumplings. BCLS $14.99 BCLS.

Going beyond the beaches of Punta Cana Judi Lees

Contributing Writer

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic: When we pull up to the five-hectare farm of Maria Del Rosario and her husband Quino Pena I can smell the coffee beans roasting. In the farmhouse kitchen, daughter Marleny stirs a bubbling lentil stew. Outside, tiny granddaughter Kiara chases a kitten among the coffee, cocoa, mango, banana and lemon trees.

photo Judi Lees/Meridian Writers’ Group

MARIA Del Rosario shows off some of the produce grown on her organic farm on Anamuya Mountain, a short drive from the all-inclusive resorts of Punta Cana, but an entirely different way of life.

I have escaped the beach-and-bar scene of a standard Dominican Republic all-inclusive vacation thanks to my friend Javier Ortez Golibart. “I’ll show you the countryside, you can meet my friends,” he announced when he picked me up from the Gran Bahia Principe Ambar, a 528-room, five-star resort with gardens, pools, restaurants, spa and a golden beach. Why “escape” from this? For me, it was a desire to see beyond the beaches of Bavaro and Punta Cana: popular, packaged havens where you are elbow to elbow with other Canadians. In Javier’s pick-up truck we headed north along a highway bordered by lush vegetation punctuated by small farms and quiet villages. Soon we turned off to follow a rugged route up Anamuya Mountain, where the scenery was rolling fields and towering trees; rustic fences bordered properties where horses roamed; and children along the road were common. At the farm I am soon chatting with the Pena family — Maria understands English, but answers in Spanish, and Javier translates. The tiny house is spotless. A solar panel on the roof is its power source. The kitchen is separate so that it doesn’t overheat the house — the average daily temperature here is 26 degrees Celsius. Maria pours us samples of coffee and cocoa — the tastes of both are rich and memorable. She offers us snacks from a tray of fruit. Javier and I indulge in melons, grapefruit, crunchy strips of coconut and sweet lemons. The farm grows both the traditional sour lemon and this sweet one, much tangier than the best oranges. Also produced here, along with coffee, cocoa, molasses, vanilla, See Bavaro page 23

Ma Barker fought the law and the law won Mitchell Smyth

Meridian Writers’ Group

OCKLAWAHA, Florida: Little has changed in 75 years here on County Road 25, about 32 kilometres south of Ocala. As you look toward the two-storey frame house fronting Lake Weir it’s easy to imagine yourself on this spot in the pre-dawn hours of January 16, 1935. In your mind’s eye you can see vintage Fords and Packards glide up, their motors cut and their lights doused, and watch as the FBI agents alight and take up positions behind the oak trees and in the orange grove. At 7 a.m., the shooting started. When it was over Arizona Kate (“Ma”) Barker and her son Fred were dead. They had been the last two members of the Ma Barker gang still at large.

In the previous year Ma and sons Fred and Arthur (“Doc”) had mounted a crime spree across Depression-era mid-western America, robbing banks and killing 10 people in the process. Hours after the gun battle, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover met the press. He didn’t tell who gave the “bandit queen” away, but the locals will tell you that Ma and Fred were undone by an alligator called Old Joe. The four-bedroom house, with a screened patio out front, today looks pretty much as it did in 1935. A few years ago its then-resident showed me around, pointing out some of the bullet holes in the walls (the FBI pumped in 1,500 to 2,000 rounds). And in the upstairs room where Ma and Fred went down shooting, he spoke about Old Joe. He said that early in January 1935 the G-men had captured Doc Barker in Chicago and grilled him about where Ma and Fred were hiding. “Doc wouldn’t talk,” my contact said, “but the agents had found part of a letter which they believed was from Ma or Fred. It said that where they were holed up there was good hunting for a threelegged alligator called Old Joe.

“So Hoover sent agents through Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, all through the southeast. In less than a week they found there was just such an alligator in Lake Weir.” The agents asked around and found that an elderly “Mrs. Blackburn” and her son “Blackie” had rented the lakefront house off Route 25. A neighbour recognized them as Ma and Fred from FBI mug shots. The house is private property, off-limits to tourists. But for several years it was open to the public for a day each year, when a re-creation of the shootout was staged. “We had antique cars, and sheriff’s department staffers played the FBI agents,” says Richard Lillie, president of the Lake Weir Chamber of Commerce. “But then we found it difficult to get enough volunteers so the re-enactment hasn’t been held since 2006.” But visitors can still hear the story from the patrons in Ma Barker’s Hideaway, a tavern a few hundred metres down the road. If you go: For information on travel in Florida go to the Florida Tourism Industry Marketing Corporation website at visitflorida.com.

Bavaro Runners offer tours From page 22 jams and chutneys, is the infamous mamajuana, a blend of rum, red wine, honey and herbs, which Javier says is taken for everything from stomach ailments to joint pain. An ounce sends your head zooming. It is sold everywhere in the Dominican Republic, but don’t try to bring any home: importing it to Canada is illegal. With Javier as my personal guide, my stay with Maria and her family was leisurely, but other visitors can have a similar, if shorter, experience through Bavaro Runners, a local adventure company whose day trips include stops at farms and schools. When Carolos Medrano was planning Bavaro Runners in the 1990s, deciding what to include on his tours,

Maria called, insisting that he visit their farm. It was worthwhile for both parties. Today some 10,000 Bavaro Runners clients visit Maria and her family annually. As Javier and I say goodbye to Maria, a Bavaro Runners truck pulls up and more than a dozen tourists disembark. It’s a win-win situation: tourists get a glimpse of local life and the family gets to sell its organic goods. It’s a small but fine example of eco-tourism working well. working through with your dog, as long as it is done constructively and without emotional attachment. As an example, if a dog is fearful of strangers, taking it to a public place, sitting in the middle of the crowd and making excuses for the dog’s

behavior while it deals with its fears the only way it knows how (which is what it learned from the past) is not setting this dog up for success. Taking a dog to a public place and retreating to a distance where he can watch strangers comfortably without interacting with them, while learning to gain confidence

and trust from a distance is setting the dog up for success. The dog doesn’t get a chance to revert to past behaviors and learns new appropriate behaviors. It also removes the emotional element from the owner out of the situation. The owner can concentrate on what the dog is doing right at the

present moment instead of making excuses for its past. The positive energy that is generated by the owner has a greater influence on the dog’s success than the treats or verbal praise that may be used to reward the dog. Your dog wants to be OK with things and move forward with joy, he doesn’t

want to live in the fear of the past. He wants to know that you believe in him and that you trust that he is capable of getting over his issues. He wants to know that you care about how he feels in a given situation. This is not done by coddling and replaying the past, but rather that by being

When your dog seeks guidance, be there to show him the way into the future instead of keeping him with one paw in the past.

CARSON Graham’s junior boys basketball team fought to the finish at the North Shore Junior Invitational Tournament last weekend, placing second after a loss in the final to the Pitt Meadows Marauders.

“Pitt Meadows is very talented team, extremely well coached and they’ve been playing for a long time together,” said Carson coach Andy Wong. “I think one of the things that was our downfall was that we only had three hours between our semifinal and the final.” The Eagles opened their tournament on Jan. 13 with a 60-43 win over North Shore rival Argyle, a win that Wong said signals improvement by his team. “We played them earlier in the year and struggled to beat them by six points. We practiced a lot over the Christmas holidays and put in some new things on defence so we were able to have a bit more of a comfortable win. Now that we’re playing some better competition we’re having some success. Overall, we’re 13-3 on the year, including some teams we wouldn’t have beaten earlier in the year. We’re coming along nicely.” Carson’s aggressive zone defence was put to the test in the quarterfinals against Victoria’s Claremont secondary. The Eagles prevailed 51-49 in an overtime thriller marked by the explosive play of guard Alex Akpo, who scored all of the North Vancouverites’

“Alex Akpo has had some pretty phenomenal results,”

Both sides were coming off top-five finishes at the recent Top 10 tournament. “Being able to extend on defence and turn that into easy hoops really helped us gets some spurts at times that allowed us to build leads,” said Pipers coach Digby Leigh. “They’re a very good team and like us, they’re very young and continuing to improve. They played a very solid game, it just happened to be our night.” Despite their strong showing at the Top 10, Royals coach Scott Palmer chalked up the loss to a little seasonopening anxiety. “We were real nervous,” he said. “It was opening night for us and we had the opening night jitters as they say. It took us a while to get our legs and get going. You have to go out and work for 40 minutes. You can’t play for 30 and think you’re going to get a good result.” But Palmer didn’t fault the hustle of Grade 10 guard

Akpo’s game ‘pretty phenomenal’

Respectful play noted by both coaches

From page 26 Wong said. “In the semi-final he had a 40-point game, but he averaged 26.5 points per game over the course of the tournament.” Wong also singled out Daniel Servillon for keeping the Eagles’ energy level up. “He really stepped it up this tournament. His hustle and his determination brings the whole tempo of the game up,” said Wong. Both boys were named tournament all-stars. But after putting away the Breakers, the Eagles had only

From page 26 Abby Dixon. “She had a great game for us. She brought the ball up and played something like 37 or 38 minutes. She worked just as hard in the first minute as she did in the last minute. That’s what impressed me about her: her work ethic from minute one to minute 39. As a Grade 10, she had lots of reasons to be a little nervous, but she didn’t seem to be.” In addition their gracious remarks about the opposition, both coaches noted the respect and professionalism shown by the two squads, who will all but definitely be squaring off several more times in higherlevel events. “They are competing in a very respectful environment,” said Leigh. “The kids all like each other, know each other, and in a lot of cases are very good friends outside of the game.” “They’ve all played against each other from Grade 8 up and summer leagues and stuff,” agreed Palmer.

three hours to regroup before taking on Pitt Meadows. Despite the 47-32 loss, Wong was pleased with Carson’s result. “We’re very happy. I think right now we’re playing our best basketball,” he said. Pitt Meadows was the scourge of the North Shore sides through the tournament, knocking out Windsor in the opening round and Handsworth in the quarterfinals. Sutherland was chased out of the opening round 17-71 by Burnaby South and lost to Sentinel in the consolation

round. But the Sabres didn’t go home with a goose egg, earning a 55-40 win over Killarney secondary in their final placement game. Sentinel was unlucky to have an early exit following a 57-55 loss to W.J. Mouat secondary from Abbotsford, but their win over Sutherland set up a chance for a 5528 win over Belmont in the consolation semi-final. After their loss to Carson, Argyle came back with a win over Charles Best and a narrow 55-53 defeat at the hands of Sir Charles Tupper in the consolation round.

In memory of a great Mom & beautiful lady. We love you forever. Rob, Jacqueline, Brianna, Auntie Sandra & All The Family IN MEMORIAM

Rachel Livingston

September 13, 1986 – January 24, 2010

We love you and miss you so much.

BRUCE - George Douglas 1942 - 2011 We announce with deep sorrow that George died suddenly of a heart attack, hiking with friends. Dearly loved and much cherished husband to Marie and father to his three children - Deirdre (Troy), Derek (Rhea) and James and his only sister Lindsay (Jeremy). George was born in Dundee, Scotland and came to Canada in 1966 to seek powder skiing. He worked as a ski patrol in the early years of Whistler and this is where he met his wife Marie in 1967. They were married in 1969 and settled down to raise their three children. He was a complete family man who had his priorities right. George lived his life with kindness, patience and a keen sense of humor. He was a compassionate man and always had time for people, especially his family whom he adored. He had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and loved to hike, kayak, snowshoe and ski. George worked for BC Hydro for 35 years and upon retiring he pursued his love of music, travel, and the arts. George and Marie spent the last 8 years of his life travelling and walking all over Europe and distant places. George will be forever missed, as he was one of nature’s gentlemen. Memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, Tuesday, January 25th at Highlands United Church, 3255 Edgemont Boulevard, North Vancouver. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the North Shore Rescue.

Dear Dad/Opa,

Wanting you to know how much we’ve been thinking of you, and how much we miss you! Not a day goes by that you aren’t in our thoughts and especially our hearts. All our love, forever and always.

She will be joining her husband Jim, brother Bert, son-in-law John, granddaughter Jessica, as well as other family and friends. Pat is leaving behind her children Kathleen (Leigh), Rob (Petra), Susan, Vickie (Ron), her 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandsons, sister Audrey, brother Frank, sister-in-law Peggy and her much loved feline companion Moxey. With the exception of 3 years in Vernon, Pat lived her entire life in North Vancouver. She graduated from North Vancouver High School in 1947, and married Jim in 1950. Pat was an avid bowler and received many awards and trophies. She enjoyed fishing with family and her 28 years as a volunteer at Lions Gate Hospital. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and “the gang” at the Summerhilll Residence. In lieu of flowers, Pat’s wishes were to consider donations to Children’s Hospital or Canuck Place Hospice. At Pat’s request there will be a gathering for family and friends. Please contact any of her children for details. ROSE - Karl Heinz Karl passed away peacefully on January 13, 2011 at Lions Gate Hospital. He was born July 4, 1928, in Brunswick, Germany, and emigrated to Winnipeg in 1953. He is survived by Marion, his wife of 55 years, two children, Karin (Angelo), Gordon, and two grandchildren, Della and Langdon. He was employed by Manitoba Hydro for 22 years. He moved to Shalalth, B.C. where he worked for BC Hydro. He retired and moved to Vancouver in 1988. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. No service by request.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
