Ambleside redesign plans begin Tessa Holloway

WEST Vancouver will leave it up to residents to decide just how much density can go on the cityowned properties in the 1300block of Marine Drive and 1500block of Fulton Avenue.
Just one caveat, however: the more density, the more money for a new combined police and fire station, improved public space and arts spaces. The redevelopment is planned to fund the new “public safety building,” which will be built to survive an earthquake, and other community amenities as part of the AmblesideNOW revitalization plan timed to begin sometime near the municipality’s 100th birthday on March 15, 2012. “Public consultation will determine what gets built and when as the project moves forward,” said Bob Sokol, director of planning for the municipality. A series of meetings will begin with an open house at the community centre on the evening of Feb. 15, although the exact details haven’t been planned. A new website, www.amblesidenow.ca, has been launched and will include details on all the meetings in February and March. Sokol said multi-family residential and commercial space is planned, but nothing else has been decided, including the phasing and when shovels will be in the ground. “If See Ambleside page 5

WHEN the Canadian Taxpayers Federation released “jaw-dropping” salary figures for First Nations chiefs and councils in November, the criticism that followed didn’t come as a surprise, but as a disappointment for Jody Wilson-Raybould, B.C. regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations. “The figures being put out by the Canadian Taxpayer Federation are just simply not the case,” said Wilson-Raybould on Thursday, noting that recent internal studies conducted by the assembly found

this province’s chiefs bring in an average of only $36,000 per year. Assembly figures sharply contrast those released by the taxpayers federation, who claimed that “over 600 Native politicians in Canada are earning a taxable equivalent of over $100,000” and “approximately 50 reserve politicians were paid more than the prime minister in 2008-09.” Like Wilson-Raybould, Chief Ian Campbell of the Squamish Nation believes the federation’s numbers are “totally distorted.”
Campbell said he views the CTF’s report as nothing more than a smear campaign, noting its release has led to alarmist assumptions that perpetuate the misconception that First Nations are not accountable — an issue that has gained greater attention as of late with the introduction of Bill C-575, the First Nations Financial Transparency Act. The private member’s bill, proposed by Conservative MP Kelly Block in the fall of 2010, calls for greater transparency of federal funds flowing to First Nations officials in the form of grants, contributions and allowances. If passed, First Nations communities across the nation would be legally required to publicly disclose See Squamish page 3

“My diet habits were very good,” said Wendy,“but I was really lacking in the exercise department and couldn’t seem to get motivated. I had lost weight over several months by eating properly, but it did nothing for my ‘problem’areas or my muscle tone.” She discovered North Vancouver’s Laser Body Sculpting Wellness Clinic who are pioneers in the revolutionary Zerona Laser treatments that actually gets rid of fat quickly, safely and
without the risks involved in surgery. Zerona laser treatments open a small pores in the wall of the fat cell which allows the fat to seep out into the surrounding tissue. It is then picked up by the lymphatic and circulatory system and processed by the body. The Zerona is the only laser that has been approved by the FDA for safety & efficacy as a non-invasive, body contouring, fat-loss & inch loss treatment. “I saw the ad in the North Shore News and was curious.” She called the clinic and booked an complementary consultation.”After looking into options, and finding out that other forms of laser and liposuction were

AN alabaster statue known as The Bather lies damaged beyond repair in the gardens of West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre. The municipality has since discarded the statue.
Vandalism destroys statue Sculpture and others came from West Van’s Parthenon estate Kerry Blackadar
kblackadar@nsnews.com
A small part of local history is under threat of fading from collective memory after vandals turned a statue to ruin last month. A 84-centimetre-high alabaster sculpture of a crouched figure, known as The Bather, was tipped over and broken to pieces shortly before Christmas outside West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre. The head was split from the body and the sculpture lay abandoned for several weeks in the centre’s garden before the municipality collected and disposed of its parts. “It was badly beaten up so there was really nothing left to do with it. Restoration like that is just not worth it,” said Glenn Madsen, the district’s cultural program co-ordinator. According to records from West Vancouver’s public art inventory, the sculpture’s appraised value was $650, well below the cost of repair expected to exceed several thousand dollars. Madsen noted that The Bather previously underwent an expensive cleaning and partial restoration in 2005, after vandals removed several of its fingers. Though the alabaster statue was not worth very much, Brent Leigh, the district’s acting communications manager, noted that it “was a gift from the community to the community, so it was certainly valued in that sense.” The statue originated from a larger collection of classical reproductions that once resided on an Eagle Harbour estate, affectionately known as the Parthenon at 5480 Marine Dr.
Though the estate no longer remains, Madsen said it lives on in community memory. “There are a lot of people who remember the estate from the late 1960s and early ’70s. It was kind of an oddity — a sculptures’ folly,” said Madsen. When the estate was dismantled in the mid-1970s, its owner, Nick Kogos, gifted eight pieces to the municipality. The remaining pieces, which have been appraised anywhere between several thousand to more than $10,000, were subsequently airlifted to various sites across the district. Today, pieces from the collection can be found on the main floor of the West Vancouver Memorial Library (a composite alabaster Diskobolos), at Music Box on Argyle Road (a composite cast marble Venus) as well as at Municipal Hall, which is home to three pieces: Flower Bust, Grape Bust, and Statue of Nude Woman. Two others, The Wrestlers and Aphrodite, reside in storage at the public works yard. According to Madsen, the district’s decision to dispose of The Bather not only stemmed from the high cost of restoration, but from the fact that the municipality is moving away from classical and neo-classical public art theory, and towards a more contemporary model. “Essentially the (new public art) theory is site-specific and integrated — you are not looking at dropping a sculpture into somewhere, but looking at creating something that fits the site, that is within keeping with the site, and integrates into the environment within that site,” said Madsen, noting Gordon Smith’s Beach Tangle on the west wall of the Spirit Square Atrium at the West Vancouver Community Centre as an example. Though Madsen believed The Bather was “a very pleasant piece . . . a good reproduction,” he noted that integrated pieces of public art are less often targets of the kind of vandalism that led to the sculpture’s unfortunate demise.
Woman acquitted of gang shooting role

A former West Vancouver real estate agent has been acquitted of a charge in connection with a gang shooting outside a Surrey strip bar in 2009. Sarah Trebble, 30, was charged two years ago with occupying a vehicle in which there was a prohibited firearm, following a gang-linked shooting on Feb. 16, 2009 that police described as a targeted hit. Trebble was charged along with three other people after she was alleged to have been in the SUV of a friend — high-ranking UN gang member Barzan Tilli-Choli — when a targeted hit was attempted on rival members of the Red Scorpions gang. Two Red Scorpions members were in a Range Rover that was riddled with bullets as it approached an intersection near the Surrey club. On Tuesday, Judge Ellen Gordon of the Surrey provincial court found Trebble not guilty of the charge, after Crown Counsel Ralph Keefer agreed to an acquittal. Neil Mackenzie, spokesman for B.C. prosecutors, said the
Crown was no longer satisfied there was a substantial likelihood of proving Trebble knew what was planned when she got into the vehicle that day. Three other people, including Tilli-Choli, Nicola Cottrell and Aram Ali of North Vancouver are still facing charges of attempted murder in the case. Trebble previously worked for a brief period as a real estate agent at Prudential Sussex Realty in West Vancouver. In 2008, she also appeared as a character witness in the seconddegree murder trial of Sasan Ansari of West Vancouver who was convicted of manslaughter in the 2006 stabbing death of Joshua Goos outside the Hollyburn Country Club. Trebble is an ex-girlfriend of Ansari’s brother, Soroush, who also worked at Prudential and who is alleged to have connections with the United Nations gang. Soroush Ansari is one of eight men charged with conspiring to murder the notorious Bacon brothers and their Red Scorpions associates over a two-month period in 2009. Ali, also alleged to be a UN associate, is also charged in the conspiracy. Their trial is proceeding by direct indictment in B.C. Supreme Court.
remuneration and reimbursement of expenses paid to councillors and chiefs annually — a move that would bring politicians on reserves in line with other elected officials, whose salaries are already available with a few clicks of the mouse. For Campbell, who has served as a hereditary chief of the Squamish Nation since he was 22 years old, the announcement of Bill C-575 was unsettling. “Block’s agenda is furthering the relations apart in the sense that it is divisive; it is not proactive in terms of what First Nations want. I think if it passes, it is just one more example of the blatant paternalism by which Ottawa treats First Nations as subjects of the Crown, when we are, in fact, a nation within a nation,” said Campbell. According to Wilson-Raybould, who earned her law degree from UBC and previously served as a provincial Crown prosecutor, the Assembly of First Nations fully supports accountability and transparency and the empowerment of its members. However, she argued that Bill C-575 represented a waste of time and wouldn’t bring about radical change, as “First Nations are already practising accountability and transparency mechanisms in their communities.” But Wilson-Raybould’s views do not go unchallenged. In fact, a few local voices are emerging in opposition — including Squamish Nation member, Jo-Ann Nahanee. “The Squamish band is one of the bands that are prioritizing self-government and, to me, for self-government to be successful, you need to have your members of your community — the participants of your government — be involved by informing them. “My band does not do that,” said Nahanee, who said she has been fighting for greater accountability and transparency from her chiefs and council for close to two decades. Campbell said audited Chief Ian Campbell financial statements are annually provided to members of the Squamish Nation and he said that the band’s accounting office doors are always open. But, according to Nahanee, such visits are few and far between. “There is an underlying fear on the reserve because there is a reliance on chief and council for welfare, for income. You are taking about people in poverty — that do without — and they are scared to speak up because they are scared to have these things taken away, so nobody speaks out,” said Nahanee, who likened apathy on the reserve to the unsettling quiet of victims of sexual abuse who “learn to keep secrets.” Nahanee is so concerned about issues on her reserve and so desperate to effect change that she has written letters to the Queen and the Minister of Indian Affairs. According to Nahanee, the Queen passed along her letter to the Governor General of Canada — a move that Nahanee said brings her hope. Off the reserve, others are beginning to question the reserve spending. North Vancouver resident Sue Lakes Cook has been trying to get her hands on the Squamish financial records for years. “I cannot see one thing across the street indicating that the funds are being distributed to the people,” said Cooks, who moved into the North Vancouver neighbourhood near Mahon and Forbes avenues back in 2003. As someone who has witnessed the violence in the area escalate from broken windows to chain-beatings and drive-by shootings, Cooks said she has a number of unanswered questions. “Why isn’t the money going into making that a really decent place? There is no playground there. What are they doing for addiction programs? If it is going to the people — then in what form? Cash?” Though Cooks may come across to those on the reserve as just another out-spoken outsider, she said her concerns stem from the fact that over the years she has made friends on the reserve. “I really like these people, and I guess if I didn’t see them on a regular basis I would just walk away and not think anything more,” said Cook, who sees the introduction of Bill C-575 as an important step forward. “At some point, people have to be accountable for the money they are getting.” Cooks and Nahanee are both hopeful that greater financial transparency and accountability on the Squamish reserve would result from the passage of Bill C-575. However, before this takes place, the bill must undergo a number of parliamentary stages and earn the support of at least one of the federal opposition parties in addition to the Conservative caucus. For Wilson-Raybould and Campbell, the unlikelihood of the bill’s passage comes as a relief, but for Nahanee, it means further delay, and little hope for immediate change.

Tempe residents lobby city Council hopes for compromise site for Rogers’ celltower

WEST Vancouver’s #1 fire hall is not earthquake-proof and will be replaced.
Ambleside density to fund new public safety building From page 1
there are public concerns we will slow up the process,” he said. One of the main projects council is hoping to fund is a new public safety building, which would house both police and fire on the site of the existing municipal hall. “The current (police) facility has no ability to survive any form of impact from even a moderate earthquake,” explained West Vancouver Chief Const. Peter Lepine, noting a list of other structural problems, including a major roof leak this September that forced many of the employees out of the building. None of the fire halls in West Vancouver are earthquake-proof. Architect James Cheng, who has been hired by the municipality to work with residents on designing the redevelopment of the 1300-block of Marine Drive, drew some laughs from the gallery as he pulled up slides of the Mediterranean island of Mykonos as inspiration, but said this building should have the same values: human scaled with quality public space. He raised the possibility of a building with terraces facing the waterfront as well as a mid-block pedestrian walkway connecting Ambleside to Bellevue Ave., but said he would take his lead from residents. “It’s very important to bring the public down to enjoy the water and to establish a connection between the waterfront and marine drive. Our block is really the connector to tie all those pieces together,” said Cheng, whose firm also designed parts of False Creek North facing the seawall. He described Bellevue as “highly underutilized” and an area he would also like to improve. All councillors voiced support for the plan. “The guiding principal here is this is going to be a cost-neutral project,” said Coun. Michael Evison. “The amenities, as mentioned earlier, are really a function of the density.”

RESIDENTS of Tempe Glen Drive are still opposed to Rogers’ proposal to erect a 41-metre cellular tower in their neighbourhood. Though a petition had already been signed by many residents and submitted to the City of North Vancouver, Tempe residents, Bridgitte Anderson and Ralph Johnstone attended the City of North Vancouver council meeting Monday in hopes of convincing council to seek an alternative site for the tower’s construction. Anderson came with a long list of concerns, noting that the tower would not only be an eyesore and diminish property values, but that exposure to radiation could pose a risk to the health of nearby residents. “According to some of the maps I have seen, the proposed tower would sit about 175 metres from the nearest house and about 200 to 250 metres from the nearby playground and tennis courts. Those playgrounds and tennis courts are utilized by many children and residents in the neighbourhood,” said Anderson, who says her fears are shared by many in the neighbourhood. Anderson and Johnstone also showed frustration over what they perceive as an extreme lack of accountability on Rogers’ part. Residents of Tempe Glen Drive pointed out that they were only notified of the proposed tower in December, and since that time, have received very little in the way of public consultation. “We feel that we haven’t had the kind of public consultation that is adequate from Rogers. We haven’t had our questions answered,” said Anderson. City engineer Steve Ono was quick to point out to council

that the city actually has very little say in the matter, outlining that Industry Canada and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission hold ultimate authority for approving the structure. “The city was approached, I think, as more of a courtesy than anything else,” said Ono. “In this particular case, the proposed cellular antenna is being located on the Ministry of Transportation’s land.” According to Ono, the tower could be placed directly at the side of Highway 1, but emphasized that the Tempe Glen land base is preferred by Rogers for safety reasons. At Monday’s meeting, Couns. Craig Keating, Bob Fearnley, and Pam Bookham showed great sympathy for residents of Tempe and agreed that solutions for alternative and less-obtrusive placements for the cellular tower should be sought. In the end, however, they acknowledged that the city has relatively little power to deny Rogers and Industry Canada access to the proposed site. “There is not too much that we can do. It is regulated by the federal government and they lock us out of a lot of these decisions,” said Fearnley. Mayor Darrell Mussatto said he is convinced a win-win solution, which would see the tower in a location suitable for the local residents and Rogers could be found within a reasonable timeframe.

T’S another white paper — an appropriate description for many Canadian First Nations who regard it as yet another paternalistic slap from politicians. If enacted, Bill C-575, the First Nations Financial Transparency Act, would give the federal government authority to enforce the public disclosure of federal funds flowing to reserves and their chiefs and councils. Those who oppose the initiative, including British Columbia’s regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations and Chief Ian Campbell of the Squamish Nation, say the bill is a step backwards on what has been a long road to increased First Nations self-governance. They say Canada wouldn’t expect to see the books of another country. That’s true; we wouldn’t. But this is money that came out of the pockets of

“If you want to be an entrepreneur on this reserve, you can’t open a business because the (Squamish) Nation will seize it.” Donald Mathias, a Capilano reserve resident, comments after West Vancouver police enforce a court-ordered eviction against the Baker family, who had operated the Capilano RV Park since 1966 (from a Jan. 28 news story). ••• “We decided to put it out there and share that with the district because if we don’t have any vehicles to charge there we might as well not let it go to waste and share it with the public.” Cameron McLeod tells District of North Vancouver council why Angel Restoration wants to build a public electric vehicle charging station in front of its business (from a Jan. 28 news story). ••• “I would challenge anyone to find a police officer who wouldn’t feel satisfaction knowing that somebody in the community stood up to a bank robber and stopped them.” Const. Peter DeVries comments on the actions of Bank of Montreal staff, who chased a bank robber several blocks on Esplanade before stopping him as he tried to escape in a taxi (from a Jan. 23 news story).
Canadians. Shouldn’t we know how our taxes are being spent? Just look at the debate that West Vancouver’s municipal budget has created. The debate over whether salary levels on reserves are as high as alleged by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is really beside the point. One might compare band council and chief salaries to those of neighbouring municipal councils. But one could also make the case for a comparison to the executive and chairman of a national company who receive six-figure incomes. The larger point, surely, is where millions of federal funds go to on an annual basis. We believe any Canadian should have the right to see an annual, audited statement. But even if that is not going to be the case, band members must certainly be able to.

2010. And the city? Let’s hear from Mayor Darrell Mussatto, speaking at a public hearing held on the matter in 2008: “I do believe we should have a look at this for a year to see how it goes and most definitely we should be working with the other municipalities on the North Shore to have a unified bylaw,” he said. Alas, somewhere over the following two years and seven months the mayor’s craving for low-tar tri-municipal unity seems to have slacked. This past November, he was part of a slim council majority that voted down the idea altogether. The reason the city skunked the districts is no mystery. Bar owners have been extremely vocal in their opposition to the ever-stricter smoking restrictions, and they have shown up at council time and again to argue their case. Who can blame them? What with a sluggish economy, the HST and drunk driving penalties most bar-goers struggle to understand, it’s not a happy time in the hospitality industry. Driving away a band of loyal clients will only makes matters worse. The problem is that bars and pubs and restaurants in the districts — not to mention much of Metro Vancouver — are facing the same pain, plus the tougher smoking rules. For the city to wait for its neighbours to toughen up and then welch on its turn was a totally cynical attempt to give its businesses a leg up. Both West Vancouver’s Mayor Pam GoldsmithJones and North Van district’s Mayor Richard Walton tactfully avoided criticizing the city, and said their bylaws may have actually improved the business

Earwigging at Bugapalooza
IT really was quite a party.
Hosted by enterprising maggots in the rotting remains of a toppled North Shore oldgrowth forest, Bugapalooza 2011 was catered by bees who served up decayed vegetation of the most exotic kinds. One disintegrating mango had the guests lined up for half the night. But before I tell you all about it, please allow me to introduce myself. I’m Social Butterfly, a Lepidoptera of the most engaging and alluring kind. Simply look at my velvety, jewel-toned wings and I’m certain you’ll agree. An expert in my field, I’ve been hired by Insect World, the ether’s most popular daily newsmagazine, to provide insight to you, my fellow bugs, into the lives of our society’s most aspirational movers and shakers. Now, defining who those “players” might be is a conundrum. Who determines which of us is most important? In the human world, the current consensus appears to be that the more money you have, the more interesting you are, no matter how crass — witness the Kardashians. In our sphere, money does not exist. So, is it the insect who’s most forceful — the hornet, the mosquito — that is most intriguing to the rest of us? Is it the beauties — the dragonflies — in our midst? Or is it the relentless survivors? Friday’s Bugapalooza offered a scenic view of our social order in microcosm.
Going Coastal
Kate Zimmerman Any insect that was any insect was at Bugapalooza. Your humble correspondent was the loveliest kind of fly on the wall, listening in on the latest buzz with wings closed, as if resting. The pose allowed me to eavesdrop on an absolute treasure trove of gossip, about the hottest West Vancouver dumpsters, the merits of bears who don’t clean up after themselves, and beer versus wine as a source of carbs. “You know, bees make the best caterers,” one beetle said to another. The two of them were all over a damp, dung-strewn mound of earth, mouths chomping, as if wet dirt were at a premium in this neighbourhood. Between you and me, it was uncouth. “Bees? How so?” asked her companion. “They’re hard workers, and they have exquisite taste,” the first explained. I detected a note of envy in her voice. Beetles themselves, of course, have a long and impressive history that dates

back at least to ancient Egypt, where some were even considered sacred. They enjoyed a flurry of attention in the 1970s, when North American humans wore silver scarabs as jewelry around their necks, a height to which an ant, for example, could never aspire. But the past 20 years have seen the beetle’s efforts at elevating itself dashed. While bees — after Martha Stewart adopted them as her symbol — have been promoted to the role of coddled pets of urban rooftop gardeners, beetles have marched backward into cheap, under-the-plant-pot ghettos. Some plants won’t even allow them to move in. “They scuttle too much” is a common complaint. “They’re loud; they have too many feet and they’re constantly moving. I can’t get a good night’s sleep,” says one plantlord who has sworn off the creatures, whom he describes as “terra-ists.” Spiders’ popularity is also on the downswing. While they are adept designers and builders, spiders, ultimately, are seen as self-serving. They can offer the rest of us “free renovations” all they want, but nobody has ever mistaken a spider for Ty Pennington of Extreme Makeover. There are even less popular bugs, however. At Bugapalooza I came upon a pocket of young termites shooting looks at a praying mantis. She was a beautiful thing, green as new grass, slender, with legs up to there, standing in a corner surveying the room with her binocular compound eyes.
“She looks as if she wants to hook up,” one termite whispered to the other in a hopeful tone. “That’s not all that’s on her mind,” said the second termite, with a shudder. “Is she religious? I mean, she’s supposedly a praying mantis, and I’ve never met one of those before. Are they Catholics, or Jews, or what?” the first termite replied. The second termite sidled closer. “Oh, she’s not a bit religious. That’s a put-on,” he murmured. “Those raptorial legs of hers are used to catch

atmosphere in their bailiwicks by attracting more non-smokers back to their locals. Artful spin, but they do have a point. Only about eight per cent of North Vancouverites smoke and that number has crept down year after year. Unbelievably, tobacco smoking is now less popular than voting. Dr. Brian O’Connor, North Shore health officer and quarterback for the common bylaw project, certainly feels time is on his side. He admitted he was disappointed at the city vote but, undaunted, he cheerfully told me he would simply have another crack at “an opportune moment.” This newspaper has come out quite a few times in favour of amalgamating the North Shore’s municipalities. This unsavoury story is certainly a good argument for it, with a parochial city council putting greed ahead of fairness, common sense and the health of its residents. But for the record, I’m not quite as convinced as some of my colleagues that all the hoped-for
amalgamation benefits would actually come about. We might be able to shed a handful of highly paid staff positions, but I suspect the survivors would start accruing new staff pretty quickly as their workload suddenly triples. Studies that followed the smush-togethers of greater Halifax and greater Toronto don’t give a clear picture of tax dollars saved. Under larger, broader governments, some local activities are more efficient, some less so. At best, it’s a wash. But local government doesn’t solely deliver services. They also have to listen to their constituents — advice about the services desired and accountability for the services actually delivered. The more remote you make that government, the less able it is to listen and respond. No one is suggesting we throw the keys over to Burnaby and let Metro run the whole region, are they? It’s also worthwhile for municipalities to compete. With all the fuss and to-do over tax rates, it’s good for them to look next door and ponder what they’re doing to attract businesses.

her prey — which can even include frogs, snakes and rodents — and keep it pinned. Worse yet, guess what she does on her countless honeymoons?” “I don’t like the sounds of this. . . .” said the first. “That’s right — she’ll bite her hubby’s head off even before the act of consummation is complete. I call that more than bad manners. Of course, some say the praying mantis is descended from the proto-cockroach. . . .” The other termite looked alarmed and began sidling toward the exit. It was then that a hush fell over the crowd as a horde of tiny, hideous, six-legged creatures swarmed into the stump.
This was a rare invasion — such standoffish creeps generally shrug off insect gatherings in favour of latching onto humans and their trappings. At Bugapalooza, however, they were strutting their stuff. These wingless, muchloathed bloodsuckers have finally become the toast of the town. Not every insect is buying in. “Cimex lectularius,” muttered a professorial-looking silverfish as he observed the bedbugs swaggering all over the stump. “Conceited upstarts!” His wife looked at him in surprise. “What do you mean? Aren’t bedbugs still considered the lowest of the low?” “Not since Vancouver established its Bed Bug Registry,” he replied bitterly. “They’re on the Alist now.” kate@katezimmerman.ca
Not so good, though, to have a race to bottom on health and safety regulations. It’s a fine balance, creating a government close enough to street level to be responsive, but also broad-based enough to resist special interest pressures. The city’s cop-out on smoking regulations illustrates both of these demands — councillors were doing their jobs by listening to the constituents who came forward. In fairness, nobody came out to rebut the bar owners. But city council failed to look at the big picture of the North Shore, the region as a whole, and the larger public health issue. Making the city a magnet for cigarettes is great for smokers and our

Macular Degeneration and the Power of Early Detection The Macula is the centre focus point of the retina inside the eye. Any damage to this area can cause significant loss of vision including driving, face recognition and reading. There are currently 2.1 million people with macular degeneration (AMD) in Canada, and this is increasing by 180,000 new cases per year. Risk increases with age and currently 30% of Canadians 55-74 years of age, and 40% over the age of 75, have some form of AMD. AMD causes 54% of the blindness in patients older than 40. Early detection is the key to preventing or delaying vision loss. In the case of the most common form,

local pubs, but it’s terrible policy for everyone else who enjoys a tipple or a walk in a public park. So this isn’t a call for amalgamation. Bigger governments make one-size-fits-all decisions that at least make for a level playing field, good or ill. Smaller governments generate a confusing collage of locally supported decisions. This circles me back to asking whether or not government should be allowed to force people into good decisions about their health. As things stand, the City of North Vancouver still has what its smokers have: the freedom to make bad choices. balldritt@nsnews.com

instrument Digital Retinal Imaging can detect many other degenerative changes much earlier than previously possible. Retinal imaging is conducted on all patients at the clinic and must be done to ensure proper ocular health monitoring at every eye examination.
Many of the AMD risk factors can be controlled or even eliminated. This is one of the main reasons why regular eye examinations with macular pigment scanning, especially after the age of 40 are so important for long term eye and vision health.

Testing a person’s body mass index is based on their height and weight measurement, which means that those with a higher muscle mass can be easily thrown into the overweight category, as muscle weighs more than fat. Book contains more than 60 drills intended to improve athleticism From page 11
“I’m trying to encourage kids, no matter what level of talent they have, to just go for a little bit more and not be discouraged,” he says. Jiany was inspired to put the book together by friend Tina Powell, author and owner of Big Fat Pen Publishing, based in West Van-

couver. Coaching Powell’s daughter, they came to get to know one another. “She took me under her wing and basically showed me the process of how to be a self-publisher,” says Jiany. Reach For It! contains a wealth of information from healthy eating tips to more than 60 clearly explained drills and stretches, aided by photographs by his wife, Palo, suitable for athletes engaging in any sport. He also explains his own story of devastation faced as a youth after being cut from his schools’ basketball teams and his perseverance, which finally earned him a spot on a high-level team. Jiany has given a copy to each of his team members and is proactive with the model during practices. While he originally wrote Reach For It! for youth, it’s got much to offer physical education teachers and coaches. To that end, he’s currently working with the West Vancouver School District to present a workshop and is willing to make presentations to any interested coaches, teachers or teams. Community members interested in hearing more about the book and picking up a copy are invited to Jiany’s book launch, set for Sunday, Feb. 6, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the West Vancouver Community Centre’s main gym. Reach For It! is also available at Kidsbooks in Edgemont Village, Red Tuque Books, or through Jiany’s website, www.coachbijan. com.
ROSS Pearhall leads his Sutherland bantam boys basketball teammates, Cody Bailey, Drew Hudson and Liam Mahon, through an agility drill under the watchful eye of coach and first-time author Bijan Jiany.

Partner up to achieve fitness goals
USING a medicine ball with a partner has many benefits.
It engages the core and upper body at once, can be used for sport-specific training, can simulate and improve your endurance for day-to-day activities, is easy to do from home and it’s fun. You can perform endless exercises with a medicine ball. For beginners, the ball is not as intimidating as using weights or machines. It’s a great way to work out your core and prevent injuries by strengthening connective tissue. Exercising with a medicine ball forces your body to move in dynamic ways. Use a five-pound ball if you’re a beginner or a 10-

pound ball if you’re more advanced. Try all of these exercises with a partner or on your own. ■ Sit-up and pass Sit on the floor approximately five feet away
from your partner. Move into a position to perform sit-ups, with your knees bent and feet on the floor and your back on the floor as well. Whoever starts with the medicine ball should hold it (in both hands) overhead and slightly elevated above the floor. Begin a sit-up and throw the ball to your partner at the peak of your abdominal contraction. Get your partner to repeat the exercise. Do 10 or 15 repetitions each. If you’re doing this solo, try throwing the ball against a wall. ■ Back-to-back rotations Sit on the floor with your partner. Your backs should be approximately one foot apart. Hold onto the medicine
ball in front of your chest with your elbows bent. Rotate your trunk to the right and pass the medicine ball to your partner, who’ll do the same. Try switching directions after 10 repetitions so you work both sides of your core equally. If you’re doing this solo, do the same movements but hang on to the medicine ball throughout. ■ Hot ball throws Stand approximately six feet away from your partner (or a wall if you’re doing this solo). Hold the medicine ball at chest level, with your palms facing outwards and the fingers of both hands almost touching. Push the medicine ball away from your body,
throwing it to your partner with as much force as you think they can handle. Get your partner to throw it back to you. You can both do this 10 times. Do this again by holding the medicine ball elevated behind your head in both hands. Bring your
hands forward and throw the ball to your partner when it is directly overhead.

SENIORS
Study suggests seniors pose less risk Fatalities involving mature drivers sees decline in the past decade WHAT’S the difference between a man and a bond? Eventually, a bond matures. Oh that hurts, but not as much as the fact that I’m now considered to be a mature driver. I’ve been driving for more than 50 years. I’m in excellent health with a clean driving record and while occasionally I can’t find my glasses, car keys or car in the parking lot — c’mon, I’m not the only one — I don’t for a moment believe that my driving puts myself or any other road user at risk. Driver safety is an important and often sensitive issue for seniors. There are more than 2.9 million licensed drivers in Canada over the age of 65 and the number of senior drivers on the road is increasing rapidly. Is that cause for concern? Are older drivers, as a group, a menace on the road? In today’s column I’ll tackle that question. Age alone, it turns out, isn’t a good predictor of driving safety. Driving is a function of ability, not age. Still, my driving experience and mature
judgment can’t overcome the fact that I process information more slowly than my teenage daughter who’s just learning to drive. Drivers over the age of 70 are keeping their licenses longer and driving more than earlier generations, leading to dire predictions about car accident risks for senior drivers. As the seniors columnist for the paper I’ve heard all the jokes about senior drivers. For instance: there’s a senior citizen driving on the highway. His wife calls him on his cell phone and in a worried voice says, “Herman, be careful! I just heard on the radio that there was a madman driving the wrong way on the freeway!” Herman says, “I know, but there isn’t just one, there are hundreds!” Herman is not the only one with a problem. Senior drivers are more likely than other drivers to receive traffic citations for failing to yield, turning improperly and running red lights and stop signs, all indications of decreased driving ability. Statistics show that seniors are over-represented in fatal crashes, are more likely than

road safety. Seniors currently represent more than 13 per cent of our total population; however, they account for 16 per cent of road fatalities. What’s the good news? New research from the United States Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that fatal car accidents involving older drivers have actually declined in the past decade. Really! According to this study, fatalities per capita among older people have decreased 35 per cent since 1975. And
Older & Wiser Tom Carney
younger adults to be seriously injured in a crash and often take longer to recover from their injuries following a crash. Case closed? Not necessarily. The driving records of those in the youngest age group (under 20) and seniors are almost exactly the same. And while crash rates are slightly higher for older people, most of the increased risk for a fatal car accident is because they tend to be more frail. I think we have to face the facts here. Most of the studies that I’ve seen show that senior drivers pose additional risks for

while fatal crashes are declining overall, the rates for older driving deaths are falling fastest. Why? We’re not sure. It may be that today’s older drivers are simply in better shape than their counterparts a decade ago, or they’re more likely than in the past to wear a seatbelt or drive a safer car. And they may be benefitting from some of the education and driver retaining programs aimed at this age group. Now, before we get all giddy here, we need to see
some further studies that verify the findings in the American report. Until then, it’s probably fair to say that while some mature drivers pose a risk, overall, the risk seems to be declining for older drivers as a group. And that’s good news, not just for seniors, but for all the other drivers on our roads as well.

Now, waking up to the sound of rain is nothing new in this end of the country. But in order for the rain to actually be able to hit my bedroom window, it would have to be coming out of the Canine Connection sky at a 90 degree angle. Joan Klucha My dogs were not concerned with this gravitational phenomenon. They slept curled tightly in little balls with their noses tucked under a blanket. I on the other hand stared up at the ceiling wishing those raindrops pelting against the double paned glass were waves splashing up on the white sandy beaches of Kaua’i as I watched a sunrise while sipping a cup of Kona gold coffee... or a mai tai. Our dogs have it good, huh? Seriously. They lazily lounge around all day waiting to be fed, walked, rubbed, cuddled, played with. They seem unconcerned about the lack of sunshine and endless days of rain in these parts. Have you ever just closed your eyes and pretended what your day would be like if you lived like your dog? Well I sure have! Many o-times! The scenario may change each day, but for the most part it’s all about relaxing, enjoying the moment and going with the flow of life. I’d start my day just before noon. My dogs are older now and sleeping in is a priority to them now. Therefore, taking their cue, sleeping in would be a priority for me every single day. Unless the sun was shining bright and hot and there was a good trail to explore on the back of my horse. Before I got out of bed, I would close my eyes and think of how my day would unfold. Everything that I did would be fun and everyone I met would be fun and filled with joy. Negativity such as anger, resentment and unforgiveness would

be gone because those are just emotions based on memories of past events, and since dogs are creatures of the present moment, today is a brand new day and yesterday is history. I’d know it was going to be the best day of my life. After leaving the comfort of my bed, I’d have a bit of breakfast and be thankful that I was offered such a generous meal by showing affection towards the person who provided it for me. Now, dogs usually do this by giving an affectionate lick or they offer their hind end for a scratch, and although my significant other may find it amusing I’m guessing he’d accept a kiss on the cheek instead. Dogs do not withhold affection out of spite. They express themselves unconditionally to the ones they love. Love to dogs does not include love handles, so the next thing I’d do is put on my running shoes and check out the scene around the neighbourhood. Being able to appreciate the beauty of the day regardless of the weather seems to be a trait unique to dogs. Even my horse runs for cover in the rain. But my dogs? They will stand in the pouring rain with their nose in the air while out on a walk just to catch the smells in the breeze. Have you ever stopped and smelled the rain? Normally we simply rush indoors to escape the rain, never mind stop and smell it, but take a moment while you are out. The rain actually has the most pleasant peaceful fragrance to it. Maybe that’s one of the reasons our dogs stop and smell the air on a rainy day, besides the fact that moisture enhances odour. Dogs, being innately social creatures, never turn a chance to say hello to their own kind down. People, on the other hand, seem to go to great lengths to avoid each other at times, even though we share the same social needs as dogs. So taking my dogs’ lead, I’d then take the time to say hello to my neighbours and greet them with a smile, since I don’t have a tail to wag. Maybe even stop and visit with them for a while. The end of my day would be peaceful, restful, a time of quiet reflection and gratitude. No TV, no Facebook, no cellphone. Just a shoulder or lap to cuddle beside and gentle conversation. Come to think of it…it’s not that hard to live the life of a dog. joan@k9kinship.com

Local wineries worth a taste
WHEN it comes to wine touring, the Okanagan Valley (and increasingly, the Similkameen) deservedly get all the glory.
However, all too easily overlooked is the handful of wineries on our doorstep. Most are recently sprouted Notable Potables fruit wineries that produce wines that range widely in Tim Pawsey variety and quality. But one — a true stalwart for its devotion solely to grape wines — Domaine de Chaberton, was established in the late ’70s by the late Claude Violet and his wife Inge. Back in the days when people were just beginning to hear rumblings that the Okanagan might be getting its act together, whispers circulated concerning a small winery in Langley, whose locally grown Bacchus and other lesser known varieties were being well received on a few local restaurant lists. Most people thought the Violets had a screw loose, but Claude, who came from a long line of French winemakers dating back to 1644, knew he had found an ideal south-facing slope that benefitted from a unique microclimate. Over the last few years, we’ve made regular trips to Chaberton to sample the classic French cuisine at Zagat-rated Bacchus Bistro and to taste through the range. New owners Anthony Cheng and Vancouver’s Eugene Kwan — who grew up on the east side — purchased the winery in 2005. They’ve continued to build on the Violets’ success, expanding the plantings of early ripening Bacchus and also enhancing the red wine program, which had proved to be the biggest challenge over the years. While the traditional ‘domaine’ label has been tweaked and enhanced, some years ago Kwan introduced a more modern See Bacchus page 20

From page 19 personality, with the Canoe Cove package. It portrays a tranquil, very Canadian scene looking forward to the bow of a canoe on the water that just happens to be Ganges Harbour. The fruit for the premium reds comes from Oliver’s Desert Hills, which has served Chaberton well in the past, contributing to a Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the ’03 Shiraz. However, while the grapes used to be pressed in the Okanagan and the juice trucked in, as of 2008 the
winery upgraded to crush red grapes on site. And the results are starting to show. Overall, worth watching for in particular is the Domaine de Chaberton Bacchus Dry ’09 that yields complex layers of honey and some mineral hints, with rich mouth feel and lingering spicy and ginger notes to finish. Surprisingly complex and truly well priced at $14.40, this wine will change the way you regard Fraser Valley wines. For a value priced red, check out the approachable Canoe Cove North Bluffs Red ’08, a primarily Okanagan Merlot blend with easy tannins and bright strawberry, cherry and peppery notes. $12.95. Or, look to the Domaine de Chaberton ’07 Syrah for bright, forward red berries, with firm midpalate spice wrapped in well balanced, restrained neutral oak. $29.99. (Quoted are winery prices. Private wine stores may sell for more.) You can find Chaberton and canoe wines at several North Shore stores. However, it’s well worth putting the time aside for a visit to the tasting room, followed by lunch (Wed-Sun) or dinner (Fri-Sat) in the very cosy bistro.

THE iconic Matterhorn overlooks the town of Zermatt.
Infinity downhill: In 2008, Zermatt hosted an Infinity Downhill Race. The race took place on Dec. 13 and 14 with the course descending from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise train station (3,800 metres) to Zermatt itself (1,600 metres). The entire course was 20 kilometres long and featured a 2,200 metre drop from start to finish. — Wikipedia

ZERMATT’S Bahnhofstrasse is full of people, not cars.
THE MYSTIQUE OF THE MATTERHORN
Alpine high
ZERMATT: This iconic Swiss resort area is high on any downhiller’s “best” list for its sweeping size and year-round skiing and riding. Add the mystique of the Matterhorn, superb country gastronomy and quintessential Swiss hotellerie, and Zermatt is arguably one of the world’s top ski destinations. The focal point of about two million postcards sent from Zermatt every year, the Matterhorn is omnipresent. This geographical wonder and spiritual inspiration is visible from almost everywhere on and off the slopes. Even Mark Twain got warm and fuzzy after climbing one of Zermatt’s peaks: “The splendour of the sun on the alpine snow was unimaginable. Nowhere else is there such an exhibition of size and beauty ...” the U.S. author and humourist wrote in 1878 in Climbing on Riffelberg, a travelogue. In spite of a century of growth that today provides shelter and comfort for up to 30,000 visitors in 125 hotels and scores of apartments, Zermatt has kept its Alpine charm and small-town soul. Founded by mountain climbers and geologists, it manages a delicate balance between a peaceful, mountain village and an efficient Swiss enterprise. Eco-conscious ahead of their time, residents banned motorized vehicles in the 1970s. Everyone gets around on foot or hops aboard battery-powered taxis or shuttle buses. For a change of pace, hail a horse-drawn sleigh for a romantic ride along cobblestone lanes. Zermatt still looks folksy. Five-star hotels like the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof or the Mont Cervin Palace have borrowed from weathered mountain chalets, with darkened wood and colourful shutters against white stucco. But change is bubbling, even in this most traditional of Swiss towns, where you

cannot buy property unless your family has roots in Zermatt. Native son Heinz Julen, a contemporary architect and designer, is making his mark. His luxurious hotel creations, such as the Firefly, the Omnia and Coeur des Alpes, are stunning, design-oriented lodges with dazzling interiors, where glass and steel mix with calfskin rugs and quirky crystal chandeliers. Julen has also cornered the market on hip nightlife in Zermatt. His two clubs, Vernissage and Showboat, are the rage for live music, stylish cocktails and late-night action. With a mix of old rustic and new chic, and a wide range of budget options, Zermatt is both grassroots and glamorous. A flock of sheep occasionally ambles down the Bahnhofstrasse — the farm is in the centre of town, after all. And the backpack brigade shares the promenade with fur-clad skiing hotties or perhaps a well-coiffed schnauzer with a jewelled collar. Here are a few ways to enjoy what I call Zermatt en Haut. It’s a must-do menu of snow sports and apres-ski delights, all above 2,000 metres and spread across Zermatt’s three mountain areas — the Rothorn Paradise, the Gornergrat and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Haute Hotel At an elevation of 3,100 metres, the astonishing Kulmhotel Gornergrat is the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps. Its two astronomy towers look like turrets, giving the hotel the air of a castle perched atop the Gornergrat summit. Gaze over its parapets and you see 29 peaks that soar higher than 4,000 metres, a humbling expanse of jagged white caps against the sky. Glance down from the Kulmhotel and you see the famed Monte Rosa Hutte, a refuge for mountaineers. Reopened last year, the hut is an archetype of eco-design that uses a shimmering aluminum shell for solar power. Getting to the Kulmhotel is a good part of the fun. For more than 100 years, the Gornergrat Bahn, the remarkable cog railway, has climbed nine kilometres

Lofty Lunch Chez Vrony is one of the coolest and most picturesque snow-resort restaurants and a requisite stop, even if you are the type who would rather ski than eat. It started out more than 100 years ago as a farm where livestock grazed on Rothorn Paradise, 2,100 metres above Zermatt, in full view of the Matterhorn. The property is in the third generation of the same family, but Chez Vrony today is a rustic-but-chic shrine of gourmet Swiss country cuisine. The cattle and sheep still munch alpine grasses in summer, but in winter, the scene turns hedonistic for visitors. Bronzed skiers and boarders loll about on sheepskin-covered chaises longues, sunbathing and sipping. Vrony’s Swiss delicacies include homemade sausages,
Swiss cheeses and roesti. Typical of the surrounding Valais region, which encompasses the upper Rhone Valley and the southwestern Alps, are the platters of cured beef and wines like pinot noir and chardonnay from mountain vineyards.
Majestic Mountains Zermatt’s three ski and snowboard mountains with their 313 kilometres of slopes add up to so many superlatives that the words “highest” and “longest” start to blur. The staggering total of 69 lifts, including 12 surface lifts for beginners, is topped by the highest lift station in Europe, at the summit of Klein Matterhorn (3,883 metres). For snowboarders or skiers, Zermatt is a multitude of unique, thrilling experiences along panoramic ridges, treefree Alpine bowls, gladed trails and the sweeping, open glacier, all made even richer by the magic of skiing in view of the Matterhorn. To add romance to the sporting life, join a guided Moonlight Paradise night on Rothorn, Gornergrat or Klein Matterhorn. This special evening, usually held when the moon is full, starts aboard a cable car as the sun sets over the Alps. Then it’s on to a
dinner of Swiss fondue in a mountaintop restaurant and skiing or snowboarding under a luminous night sky. Go easy on the food and drink. You’ll be conquering a lot of terrain by moonlight before you get back to the cozy comfort of your Zermatt hotel. The longest trail on Klein Matterhorn is 22 kilometres. After a day or two in the Swiss Alps, you’ll be acclimatized to the altitude and familiar with the intricate trail map. You’re ready for the spectacular Matterhorn Ski Safari, a tour of 12.5 kilometres of skiing or riding that never repeats the same trail. With cable cars interconnecting Zermatt’s three mountains, the Safari is an all-day adventure that uses 19 different lifts. Bring your passport. Lunch is in Italy. If you go: Tourism information: For Switzerland: 800-794-7795, www.myswitzerland.com. For Zermatt: www.zermatt. ch. Since Zermatt is car-free, the best way to get there is on Switzerland’s efficient railway system. You can buy a Swiss Pass for four, eight, 15 or 22 days of railway travel. Plus, kids 6 and younger ride the rails for free. (Price details at www.sbb. ch/en.)

WORK
Entrepreneur works it on CBC’s Dragons’ Den
Manisha Krishnan
mkrishnan@nsnews.com
WHILE most contestants on CBC’s Dragons’ Den are trying to sell the idea behind their product, one North Vancouver entrepreneur already proof of its success. He just needs the capital to back it up. Michael Bulva will be pleading his case to a panel of ruthless business moguls on an upcoming episode of the show, with the hopes of landing some solid investments. Five years ago, Bulva , who has a background in commerce and engineering, started developing a new concept for exercise — one based on using your own body weight for resistance training. He built a prototype out of wood and metal, went through some design concepts and came up with the SoloStrength Home Gym. “It looks basically like a pull-up bar, it’s an adjustable support bar that lets you leverage your body weight to do literally hundreds of exercises,” says Bulva. With each piece of equipment comes a basic nine-exercise program that engages the entire body, he adds. “You’re in a hard sweat the majority of the time and your muscles are getting the full exercise. You’re left feeling great, really energized and with lean muscle development. It’s a really effective way to lose weight and tighten your muscles.” Since an entire workout can be done in 15 minutes — 30 is preferable — SoloStrength is targeted at families and baby boomers, says Bulva. “It’s a combination of people that are extremely busy and find it difficult to find time get to the gym or, as is the case with the
boomers, a lot of the time they just don’t have an interest in being in a gym environment.” After receiving positive feedback, Bulva found a manufacturer in China and began selling SoloStrength to personal trainers, hotels and even hospitals. The company sold out of product about 10 months ago. “When you get into product-based business and particularly product that you can’t just set up shop to manufacture in your garage or your basement, when you’re engaging a factory and distributors and to reach the market, it costs an awful lot of money,” says Bulva. “So we realized that in order to do this on the scale we would need to do it successfully, we are going to need a lot more money.” That money was hard to come by in a challenging economy, so a few people suggested Bulva try his luck on Dragons’ Den. At first, he was skeptical. “I personally thought we were past the point of presenting on Dragon’s Den, they’re usually like an angel investor panel, they’re usually in the very start up stages, whereas we had already sold product, we had a proven concept,” he explains. Nonetheless when he heard auditions were taking place in Vancouver, Bulva and his son Mateo, 7, rounded up the equipment and headed down. A few months later they were filming the show. “It was very exciting process. We really felt like we were in the TV show while we were filming,” says Bulva. “It’s a little bit stressful because they all fire questions at you . . . and you’re trying to be respectful and answer each of the questions with a good answer, and everyone will interrupt.” Bulva’s not sure how it will all go down on the air, but he is pleased with the outcome and the exposure SoloStrength will be receiving.

From page 24 mark in his RRSP at the age of 67. Even with a modest/cautious 3.5-per-cent yield, his untouched RRSP is now growing at the rate of $35,000+ a year. He has been spending some of his non-registered capital, thereby reducing his interest and dividend income — and so his income tax bill. Psychological shine: I always remember the man who had sunk into a deep depression after he retired from a job in which he had played a vital role, and now felt completely worthless. Semi-retirement allows you to ease through that transition, perhaps even to strike out in a related or totally new direction. Choose self-employment during your semi-retirement and you open the door to a wonderful world of tax deductions denied to the employed. Of course, every (semi-)retirement plan is different. For example, some people stop work totally and live happily ever after. But the key word should always be “plan.” Whether you are 25, 45 or 65, use this RRSP time of the year to (1) set some retirement objectives, (2) find out whether they make sense financially, and (3) make the right money moves. Your choices are simple: save/invest more now so you can (semi-)retire sooner, or don’t save so much now but plan to live on less later, or work longer. Then choose the appropriate investments. Financial advisor Pat McKeough, publisher of The Successful Investor and other newsletters (www.tsinetwork.ca), echoes my advice: “Retirement leaves you with lots of free time, and filling it costs money. But postponing retirement or working part-time as long as you are able can pay off in higher current income, more contentment and greater long-term security.”

THE Windsor Dukes basketball team maintained their hold on the senior boys AA league this past week, notching wins against Elphinstone and Collingwood.

The Dukes are sitting comfortable atop the standings with 18 points, 10 points clear of rival Sutherland. “We’re in a position now where if we can somehow beat Sutherland at the end of the season, we could be in first and host the playoff tournament, or if we lose I guess they would host it,” said Windsor coach Rob Ros. “We like our place but I think Sutherland is the favourite overall because they have the experience and they’ve been through it.” With only one Grade 12 player in the lineup, the Dukes don’t have the size of some of their opponents, but consistent play from core players David Manshreck and Spencer Quon has helped them to a 7-1 record. “We’ve been getting solid play all year from David Manshreck,” said Ros. He’s been our most consistent scorer and rebounder this year. He’s been playing well all season.” In the 53-42 win over the Collingwood Cavaliers on Tuesday, Manshreck put up 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. “So that’s a solid all-around game. The other boy who played very well in that game was Spencer Quon. He had 19 points and six rebounds. “I didn’t like our execution very much, to be honest. We played well defensively. We rebounded the ball pretty well. But we didn’t shoot the ball particularly well. I think Collingwood had something to do with that. They’re a good defensive team and they played pretty hard. They’re not easy to score against. We played well defensively to keep them to 43 points. It was one of those games where we really struggled offensively but we took care of the ball. We didn’t turn it over very much and we able to just do enough quarter by quarter to get the job done.” On Thursday, the Dukes put away Elpihnstone 79-42. CollingwoodtoppedRockridge 93-75 and the Sutherland Sabres won a pair against the Cavaliers and Rockridge.

CITY of North Vancouver resident Lauren Woolstencroft is going to need a bigger trophy case.
The 10-time Paralympic medallist has been nominated for a 2011 Laureus World Sport Award as a World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability. The awards are given annually based on the votes of 46 prominent sports
journalists. Woolstencroft is the only Canadian to be nominated. The awards will be announced in Abu Dhabi Feb. 7. Previous award winners include Kobe Bryant and Rafael Nadal. “I’m very excited to be nominated for all these awards,” said Woolstencroft, in an Apline Canada release. “This has been quite an amazing journey. the biggest sports award in the world. It’s mind-boggling.” Danielle ten Vaanholt of West Vancouver will be part of the North Shore contingent heading to Halifax next week to represent B.C. in the Canada Winter Games. The 17-year-old synchronized swimmer is a member of Vancouver Pacific Wave, and will be one of ten B.C. swimmers competing in Nova Scotia. — compiled by Benjamin Alldritt
It’s the beginning of an interesting time for the storied North Shore club, as it gets to grips with a young squad and a new B.C. Rugby scheduling format brought in to ease entrance of new clubs and help retain those already in. “Some of the weaker teams may slip down a bit without being relegated, which was the nasty word going around last year,” Capilano president Ken Robinson said. “Nobody wants to get relegated. If your club gets knocked out of the premier division you generally lose a lot of your best athletes because they want to play premier. This new system is a bit kinder.” While Capilano is a perennial powerhouse on the pitch, the new rules mean the top clubs have to hit the ground running. The clubs are divided into pools, and by early March the top four clubs in each pool advance to the eight-team premier league. The bottom two squads are diverted to a separate division. “The first four or five games are relatively important, so you have to come out of the gate pretty fast. You can’t be wasting time getting ready or take the first couple games lightly. You have to get into it right away or you’ll find yourself playing down in the dungeons when the real league takes off in a month’s time,” Robinson said. “We’ve been training for a few weeks and the guys have been in the gym,” he said. “It’s tough with the January weather, though. But quite a number of them are pretty serious about it.” Among them will be Tom Larisch, the longtime Capilano player who has moved into coaching duties, although he did play a few games with the Caps in the fall season. “We’re a club in transition right now,” he said. “We have See Coach page 28

Name: Abdul Mohammad School: Sentinel Grade: 12 Sport: Wrestling Position: 66-kg class Coach: Jamie Young
The scoop: At the Western Canada Age Class held in Kamloops Jan. 13-15, Cholena Horne moved up two weight classes in order to leave space for her teammates and spread out the talent on the school’s wrestling team. Defeating all comers handily, Cholena was also voted the tournament’s Outstanding Female Cadet (Grade 9 and 10) wrestler at the end of competition. Her impressive result helped win Carson Graham the Cadet Girls team title. Cholena’s season record now stands at 17 wins and only one loss. She now sets her sights on winning a provincial high school title at the end of February.
The scoop: Abdul has had an outstanding season, grabbing gold at the Western Age Class Tournament. Abdul was wrestling at 66 kg, which had the largest number of competitors in a weight class at 35 wrestlers, and he still moved up easily undefeated to the finals. Abdul is one of our expert senior wrestlers who has acquired his coaching certificate as well as his referees training, which makes him an outstanding team wrestler, coach and referee. When Abdul graduates this year he will be missed at Sentinel!

have a great group of young talent that is developing.” As Carson Graham secondary’s rugby coach, Larisch has been close to the North Shore high school rugby programs for years. Some of the current Capilano squad are alumni of Carson’s provincial championship team from a few years back, and almost all of the side are familiar faces for Larisch. “We’re basically kids. Right now, it’s a tough learning curve for them to play against men on a regular basis, but they’re learning valuable lessons quickly and I could see them being quite competitive by the end of the year. Once they gain some confidence and some experience, I think they’ll be able to handle anyone. I foresee, long-term, in a year or two this becoming a dynasty if they stick together, plus we get some additions coming back from universities.” Larisch echoed Robinson’s comments on the importance of the early games, but said his focus is still on laying down strong foundations. “We want to be 2-0 or at least 1-1 after these first two weeks to put us in a good position. “But my only goal is that we play better every week. That’s it. In my own plans I have long-term goals for this team, but right now with this team I just want us progressing every week. “I don’t even want to concentrate so much on the result as on that each player does something better every week and closes that gap between the experienced, high rated players on some of the other teams.”

SOSTAD - Marguerite Edythe Born in Vancouver to Annie and Samuel Wilson on April 26, 1917, Marguerite Edythe Sostad quietly passed away in the company of family on January 13, 2011, in the North Vancouver Kiwanis Care Centre. Predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Ralph, and two older sisters (Ivy and Violet), Marguerite was an active resident of West Vancouver for more than 50 years. She lived an exemplary life full of kindness, care and compassion for family and everyone she met. She was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star, a gracious hostess, an avid gardener and a devoted dog owner. She will be sadly missed by her daughter (Marilynn Sinclair) and two sons (Larry and Ron). A devoted Mother-in-law, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, there were numerous who enjoyed the warmth of her attention. Her adult Grandchildren included David (Dori) of Victoria, Daniel (Anny) of West Vancouver, Don (Cheryl) of West Kelowna, and Andrew and Christopher of North Vancouver. There are as well the many GreatGrandchildren: Jesse, Chelsea, Sterling, Sydney, Courtney, Andrew, Ryan and Evan. All of the family committed considerable time and effort to maintaining Marguerite’s quality of life during her declining years. Dilys Sostad could always be counted on for special care and assistance, William Sinclair took care of the practical needs. The family also would like to recognize the dedicated effort of the staff and volunteers at the Kiwanis Care Centre for helping our dear Mother during her final days. She fell in love with Vancouver and B.C. Margarit was always positive and cheerful and she was a gracious and classy woman. She will be sorely missed. She easily made friends and always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. She travelled all of North America in a giant motor home with Boyd from Virginia, who was her great Love and companion. MOORE, ISABEL PEARL
Isabel was born in Outlook, Sask. on September 4th, 1921 to Lily and Hugh Patterson and passed away peacefully on Friday, January 21st, 2011 at the age of 89 with her husband and daughters by her side. Isabel will always be alive in the happy memories of her family and friends and is survived by her loving husband of 67 years Emerson (Blonde), daughters Phyllis (Bill Rapanos), Linda, and Carole (Pieter) Matthijsse. Her grandchildren - who were the light of her life - Hanna, Anders and Jenna Matthijsse, will also sadly miss her, as will her half-brother Ross (Babs) Patterson, sisters-in-law Freda Patterson and Olga Moore, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Her only son Robert (Bob) predeceased her in 2004. Isabel and Emerson were introduced to each other when “he was 4 and she was 2”. In 1944 Isabel traveled from Outlook to Victoria where they were married. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Nelson where Emerson got a job with the CPR and in 1946 they started their family. In October 2008 Isabel and Emerson moved to a seniors facility in North Vancouver, and although she missed Nelson and all her friends there, she was happy to be closer to Phyllis and Linda, and Carole was an easy flight away. She was a wonderful Mum who loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally. Isabel was a water lover extraordinaire, whether it meant swimming in the Saskatchewan River as a kid, to the aquatic center in Nelson, or 60 years of summers at Christina Lake – this was her passion. The kitchen was the hub of our home and Isabel will always be remembered for her hospitality and famous gingersnap cookies. During her 65 years in Nelson she made friends easily and cherished her special friendship with Ruth Chambers, Bobby Gutwin and Phyllis Stanley. As well as being a homemaker, Isabel worked at Ramsay’s Camera Store for 22 years, retiring in 1981. Isabel was the centre of our world. Her beautiful smile came easily and she had one for everyone she came into contact with. We will miss her smile, her laughter, her quick wit and the mischievous twinkle in her eyes, and look back on the many wonderful times we had together. We were blessed to have her in our lives and a gathering to celebrate and honour her life will be held at a future date. Special thanks to the incredible staff at Sunrise of Lynn Valley who treated Mum with such gentleness, respect and kindness; it meant so much to us. In lieu of flowers, donations in Isabel’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, #300-828 West 8th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1E2 or the Parkinson Society of BC, #600-890 West Pender St, Vancouver, BC V6C 1J9, would be appreciated.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Tackle chores Sunday – be safe with tools, electricity. This eve to Tuesday afternoon brings happy, flirty, friendly relationships. Don’t be argumentative Monday. Though mid-week tempts you toward research, investments or sexual intimacy, or nudges you to make a commitment to a person or lifestyle, you’d be wise to wait. Your future will develop best if right now you are social, if you play, plan and dream. Rewards come from past efforts, not present ones. Gentle, mellow love and understanding, travel and legal success float in late Thursday night through Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: Legal matters might slow now to June, particularly those involving work, health or machinery. So might far travel, religious projects and higher studies – in these, “revisit old haunts.” For instance, you’ll succeed in school if you resurrect an old project or study subjects you’ve studied before. Sunday afternoon to Tuesday brings work and health concerns. The weeks ahead reward ambition, so plunge into tasks. Relationships can be irksome mid-week. Be diplomatic; don’t push your own agenda. Secrets, depths, sexual attractions and finances – all luckily – fill Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The weeks ahead beneficially emphasize higher learning, legal affairs, far travel, cultural involvements/rituals and gentle love. Sleep in Sunday morning. This eve to Tuesday brings romantic situations, pleasure and beauty, passion and risk. Your creative juices flow. Gambling, however, might hurt your bank account. Reject investments for now. (Until June, new investments are ill advised. Stick with those already in the works.) Work and health issues arrive late Tuesday through Thursday. Good and bad luck are mixed, so just plod ahead. Relationships excite, reward Friday/Saturday!

Jan. 31 - Feb. 6 Capricorn Dec.22-Jan.19: The weeks ahead emphasize money, earnings, buying/selling, possessions, sensual attractions and memory. Accept surface appearances; they will tend to be true, and questioning will “sour the atmosphere.” Lots of money might come! But be selfdisciplined: spending can get out of control. Now to June, you are powerfully favoured to purchase (and sell) real estate, to heal family issues, to find security, and to end limiting situations, projects and conditions. (You might see and chuck these luckily Friday/Saturday.) February is one of the best months to combine money and property. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness soar for the next few weeks. Start important projects, ask favours, seek permission, impress bosses, colleagues. Your determination and sex appeal (which are always linked) are unusually high now through February. Sunday morning has a mysterious cast, but this eve to Tuesday brings wisdom, gentle love and understanding. Be ambitious mid-week, but be diplomatic. You might push just because you have extra energy, but others could feel you’re abrasive. Wishes come true Friday/Saturday – expect social joys, entertainment, flirtation, happiness! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Retreat for a while. Gather your energies and your thoughts. Rest, contemplate, let the world go by. Be charitable, spiritual. The few weeks ahead favour dealing with government, taxes, institutions and large corporations. Study a money plan, rework it until it’s perfect. Soon – by March at the latest – money will start flowing your way, perhaps a huge pile of money. Students could win scholarships, consultants might land a big client, etc. But now is preparation time. Avoid belligerent people, unsavoury places. Sunday to Tuesday is mysterious. Be ambitious Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
