Most N. Shore daycares are highly rated
Health inspectors report that 85% of facilities are in good condition
Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
A survey of daycare inspection reports on the North Shore has found the vast majority of local childcare facilities are highly rated by provincial licensing authorities, with a relatively low number of concerns. The information comes from a database compiled by the Vancouver Sun, put together after the newspaper obtained daycare inspection reports for facilities throughout the Lower Mainland through a freedom of information request. The reports covered a wide range of licensed childcare facilities — from those caring for infants through to pre-schools and after-school care. On the North Shore, about 85 per cent of those daycares were rated by monitors as in good condition and requiring only a regular annual inspection. That compares to 73 per cent of facilities overall in the Lower Mainland that received the best rating. Inspectors from Vancouver Coastal Health’s child care licensing branch rate facilities on a set of criteria including reports of any “incidents” (including responses to children by staff deemed “inappropriate”), staff qualifications and the safety of the premises, among others. THE District of West Vancouver believes it has succeeded in its effort to keep the iconic Point Atkinson Light Station, namesake of Lighthouse Park, out of private hands.
The 86-year-old building went up for sale last spring along with about 1,000 other lighthouses across the country in a bid by the federal government to unload the cost of their upkeep. The idea was to sell the structures to businesses or communities who would use them as tourist draws or for other purposes while Ottawa retained control of the lights themselves, which would be maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard. Among the buildings on offer was the famed Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse in Nova Scotia. West Vancouver, anticipating that residents wouldn’t take well to seeing See Site page 5

SUNDAY FOCUS SURVIVING THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION
All the news that’s still fit to print Deana Lancaster
dlancaster@nsnews.com
ACCORDING to some media watchers, the death knell for the end of print rang out in the early ’90s, not long after scientists at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) developed a user-friendly means to navigate the Internet: the World Wide Web.
Books were said to be finished;publishinghousescould close their doors; magazine editors should find other work, and newspapers — especially newspapers — might as well call it a day. As with any revolution though, the transition has not been swift, or neat. We’re not talking about shift workers here: print did not clock out at the precise moment the Internet clocked in. Books, magazines, and newspapers are still in print — although admittedly there are less of them — and are now supported by online editions. There has never been a better time to be a news and information junkie; the access to news organizations has never been so open, the variety and perspective of opinions so diverse. Some say the current model of free content is not sustainable; at some point we will have to start paying. In the Feb. 13 Toronto Star, David Olive surprised the doomsday soothsayers by NEWS photo Mike Wakefield pointing out that for 2009, Statistics Canada reported COMMUNITY newspapers are well-positioned to survive the digital revolution: they’re hyper-local, knowledgeable about their subject newspaper pre-tax profit margins matter and on the ground in their communities. nationwide at about 10 per cent. willing to pony up. Garbage, Recycling, Yard and Soon…Food Scrap Recycling If you live in a single family home in West Vancouver, you know to sort your garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings, and leave it at the curb on the designated day so that the municipality can have it picked up and taken away. Did you also know that, over the past seven years, West Van residents have demonstrated a consistent increase in what they recycle, along with a corresponding decrease in what they put in the garbage? To increase home recycling rates even more, West Vancouver partnered with Metro Vancouver to conduct a six-month curbside food scrap recycling project. Five hundred homes in Caulfeild participated in the test. The program diverts food scraps that would normally be thrown in the garbage into the yard trimmings bin instead. This includes vegetable and fruit peels, cooked food scraps, meat, fish, bones, dairy products,
baked goods and foodsoiled paper. The food scraps and yard trimmings are then picked up and composted. The new food scraps recycling service will be available to all North Shore residents later in 2011. Stay tuned for more information. Visit westvancouver.ca/recycling for more information. Visit www.northshorerecycling.ca for details on current recycling programs.

number of problems, or issues that need addressing, get inspected more often — up to three times a year. According to information made available in the Sun’s database, on the North Shore, the vast majority of just under 220 licensed child care facilities were rated as having a low number of problems or issues that needed addressing by inspectors. Of the remaining facilities, 29 — or about 13 per cent — were rated as having a “moderate” number of issues to be addressed. Six daycares — under three per cent — were rated as having a high number of issues. Problems cited ranged from “staff cannot
consistently handle emergencies” to the physical surroundings being rated as a chronic “health and safety hazard.” They also included far less serious concerns such as insufficient information about the management of the facility. Daycares cited as needing more inspections on the North Shore included Back to Basics, Forest Hill Children’s Centre, Great Beginnings Child Development Centre, Petite Hands Daycare, Sherry’s Family Child Care and Yoet YoesOrca Child Care. Glenda Burrows, senior childcare licensing manager for the North Shore, said she received quite a few calls from parents on Friday after the report came out, asking “Should I be concerned?” Parents have asked to see reports on their children’s daycare, she said

their lighthouse sold, contacted Fisheries and Oceans Canada in December to propose what Leigh termed a “community-based solution.” When federal officials made it clear they would be open to the idea, West Vancouver submitted a formal letter. Ottawa hasn’t replied in writing, said Brent Leigh, the municipality’s deputy administrative office, but given discussions he’s had with both the FOC and Parks Canada, he is confident the site will remain public. “Basically, the status is we’re acknowledging jointly that Point Atkinson would be pulled out of the divestiture,” said Leigh. “They’ve recognized it as a site of national interest. . . . It has a community and historic relevance to a heavily populated area.” Although it’s the federal government that was in charge of the sale, the municipality did receive calls from real estate agents who said they had clients interested in the site, he added. What exactly the final arrangement will look like is still unclear.
When all is said and done, the new owner will likely be a nonprofit society, said Leigh, but who will wind up on the hook for upkeep remains an open question. The municipality is looking to the federal government for help on that front, but Leigh could not say how much money would be required. It may depend in part on the degree of restoration that is undertaken. And while West Vancouver wants the public to have access to the structure, what form that access will take remains to be seen. The municipality plans to work with the West Vancouver Historical Society and other community groups as it finalizes details, he said. “We’ll look to put together the optimal public use,” said Leigh. “It could be a cost-recovery strategy, selling items. I don’t see it as a Coney Island thing, but whether there’ll be tours or a historical (site), I would never want to hazard a guess.” Lighthouse Park, which is owned by the federal government, is under lease to the district until 2026. The light station grounds are not part of that arrangement, however. Calls to the coast guard and to FOC were not returned.
— which all parents can do by calling the childcare licensing office. “We encourage that,” said Burrows. Greg Ritchey, regional manager for licensing for Vancouver Coastal Health, cautioned parents not to judge daycares on the inspection reports alone. Asking lots of questions and visiting the facility often are among the best safeguards for parents, he said. Ritchey said the inspection reports will soon be available online.

Fluff of nightmare

LSEWHERE in these pages is a story that considers the ongoing viability of print media in the face of digital competition. One argument in the article touches on the need for writers trained in objectivity, analysis and investigation to act as filters for the constant stream of data supplied by the Internet. There is just so much information circulating, says this theory, that constant reader wants someone else to decide what the story actually is, verify it, and save her time that would otherwise be spent in superficially trolling the surface of the Internet. There’s certainly hope for the long-term future of the industry, but the growing move to pass off entertainment as news does trouble us. The more that mainstream media —
you said it “When I fell on my knees in the water, that was the first time I thought: ‘This could be it.’” Michael Conway, 29, tells a news conference he feared the worst when he found himself lost in Lynn Canyon overnight and suffering from hypothermia after he took a wrong turn walking home from a party and fell down an embankment (from a March 2 news story). ••• “It’s happened to us enough times we know how it feels.” Squamish Nation Chief Gibby Jacob reassures landowners mistakenly granted title to 10 acres of reserve land near Squamish that the band won’t seek to take the land from them, and instead accept compensation for the lost assets (from a Feb. 27 news story). ••• “We have a very solid 53year track record of operating safely within the community, and we’ll continue to do that.” Canexus plant manager Rick Denton, commenting on the chlorine leak that sent four workers to hospital Wednesday morning. The company is investigating the incident (from a March 4 news story).
and we’re not just talking newspapers here — focus on celebrity gossip, video of animals with two heads and stories that generate headlines with a sexual reference, the less it is actually investigating the news. If it is not doing that, is it ultimately diluting its best chance for survival? It’s not that media is entirely at fault. Humanity has been interested in hero stories — building them up and tearing them down — since we assigned human qualities to deities. If we can’t live perfect lives or scandalous lives, we can experience them vicariously — hence this week’s media fascination with Charlie Sheen. But when the Calgary Herald’s editorial chooses to repeat an odious comparison to Moammar Gadhafi, it conflates news with gossip and does journalism a disservice.

3rd option for Ambleside? Dear Editor: It appears that West Vancouver council is well on its way to converting West Vancouver into the West End without the benefit of true or meaningful public consultation. The motivation appears to be greed. Property value uplifts at proposed development sites will be shared by the municipality and big developers while at the same time detracting from the property values of current Ambleside residents, many of whom are longterm, elderly residents. Large towers proposed for both 1300- and 1600-block of Marine Drive have the potential to ruin existing views, cast dark shadows and increase traffic congestion. Both the process and the plans for Ambleside are fraught with inconsistencies, misinformation and political “spin.” At the Feb. 15 information meeting for the Ambleside Now proposal, it seemed that the purpose was promotion of the proposal rather than to solicit legitimate feedback. A slick video slideshow of historical and picturesque vistas set to music was shown, after which attendees were encouraged to applaud. No actual information was incorporated into this video. This was followed by some brief words from the mayor who referred to the Ambleside Now proposal as “policy”! No questions from the floor were invited. And, while district representatives were available for individual questions, the information provided was inconsistent and misleading. When I asked about the Safeway site, I was told that information was not available because it is deemed an entirely separate project. However, the Ambleside Now literature indicates that a large development at the Safeway site is to provide

an anchor for Ambleside Now revitalization and was described (along with the development of the 1300-block) as a “catalyst” for remaining Ambleside development. A public consultation meeting for the redevelopment of the Safeway site is to be held March 10 at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Centre. However, the redevelopment proposal has already been presented to the district design review committee for deliberation and resolution on Feb. 24. This appears inconsistent with other redevelopment processes that went to design review committee only after public consultation. It should also be noted that this was presented to the design review committee prior to the availability of a view study, a shadow study, a real prospective and a traffic study. However, what I find most disturbing is that only two options have been prepared: a 15-storey tower and a 10storey tower. There seems to be a complete absence of a third option: one that adheres to current OCP and zoning (a maximum four-storey building). Surely we deserve to learn the potential community benefit and land value uplift that a development of that nature would contribute. The IGA development in Dundarave certainly provides community benefit and does so without a tower blocking views and detracting from village charm. I would encourage citizens to attend the March 10, 6:30 p.m. meeting at the seniors’ centre to let the district know that this OCP amendment, rezoning application and development permit is not complementary to a revitalized Ambleside. Wisdom of Allan Williams missed Dear Editor: For three years I sat next to Allan Williams, not only in council, but every other meeting we attended. When I first joined him on council I was terrified of him: he had 35 years of political experience, I had none. Beneath that legal, upright exterior was a man who cared enormously for West Vancouver. He listened to my ideas, and distilled them and some of those were repeated in his eloquent Monday night speeches. It was a difficult time on council, Alan lead the charge for change. One piece of advice he gave me was: Always raise the taxes a little, only one or two per cent to keep up with inflation, but not enough to make it hurt! He served West Vancouver for 40 years, as a parks board member, as an MLA and finally as a councillor. His name is on practically every public building in our municipality. West Vancouver is a poorer place without his presence. I shall miss Allan and his wisdom enormously. Liz Byrd West Vancouver

How, you ask? You clearly aren’t aware that Oprah Claus is coming to town. She’s just launched the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) in Canada, and all I can see for myself is sunshine and butterflies from here on in. On Ask Oprah’s All Stars, for example, we’ll be able to pose our “burning questions” to psychobabbler Dr. Phil, money maven Suze Orman and wellness wiener Dr. Oz. On the series Enough Already! “acclaimed organization and clutter expert” Peter Walsh will show us how to throw things out and squirrel things away — a full-time job, in Oprah’s world. Meanwhile, on Miracle Detectives, a couple of so-called investigators will “travel the globe to uncover answers to mysterious incidents that transcend logic.” Things like, say, how Oprah Winfrey can feature one series on her new network that’s about the final season of her show on her old
Going Coastal
Kate Zimmerman network — Season 25, Oprah Behind the Scenes — and how an OWN show called Oprah Presents Master Class can bill itself as “an unprecedented first-person insight into the brilliant minds of the famous people we love and respect,” and include Oprah herself among them. Presumably on that show, Oprah will interview Oprah. Can you say “hubris?” Well, I can! I can readily demonstrate that I know what it means, too, with my pitch for two new shows to run on OWN. I’m assuming that this new network caters to a predominantly female viewership of “aspirational” consumers who only discovered Charles Dickens when he got the endorsement
of Oprah’s Book Club. These are people with a lot of time on their hands. And good golly, I can relate to them just as well as Oprah can. After all, I’m female (in most ways that count), I wouldn’t mind movin’ on up, and I’m perennially under-employed. OK, so here’s the first pitch: There’s only so much time people are going to have for OWN’s promised series, What Now? with Shania Twain, in which the former Tiny Terror of Timmins attempts to resume her position at the pinnacle of country music. As a counter to that feel-good scenario, I give you my show: WTF? With Kate Zimmerman. WTF? will consist of my character disapproving of practically everyone and everything I encounter. In the first episode, I’ll give the thumbs-down to hopeless alcoholics; in the second, hopeful vegans; in the third, homeless conservatives; in the fourth, hapless people who keep pictures of their cats in their wallet. Look forward to a lot of defensive posturing from those whose egos I pound into carpaccio. Bonus: I can’t be bothered to dress up or brush my hair for TV, so to play my role, I’m hiring the gorgeous
Angelina Jolie. Her grimacing technique is unequalled since she’s all lips. Really, though, WTF? With Kate Zimmerman is my side project. The crème de la crème of my OWN offerings is a guaranteed winner, entitled (wait for it!): The Real Housewives of Lynn Valley. The premise is simple: Vicki Gunvalson, of The Real Housewives of Orange County, has split up with her husband, Whatzit. Broke and destitute (by her standards), she is forced to relocate to the North Shore’s peaceful and semiaffordable Lynn Valley.
There, depressed by the rain, she tries to interest the women she meets randomly at Canadian Tire and Winners in the concerns of her pals in Orange County: Botox, collagen, facelifts, tanning, cocktails, shopping for low-cut tops and pawing other people’s husbands at otherwise stilted soirees. The locals are curiously resistant to her invitations to come over for “asparagus spears, a Brazilian wax and a dozen mojitos.” But they politely reciprocate with invitations to go snowshoeing and “man the money box
at the Scouts’ manure sale” — something she misinterprets, hilariously, as a double entendre. This show models it all — family values and healthy lifestyles — and, as a bonus, sales of fleece jackets, GoreTex pants and snowshoes are sure to go through the roof. And if, unbelievably, The Real Housewives of Lynn Valley fails, I can always make its stars my regular co-scoffers on WTF? With Kate Zimmerman. Genius? Moi? Surely you jest. But do watch for me on Oprah Presents Master Class. kate@katezimmerman.ca

Newspapers offer a unique experience From page 3
ground in their community and knowledgeable about their subject matter. As with any product, readers select what’s valuable to them. “If you look through the whole Lower Mainland, the community newspapers have tremendous readership,” says Roberts. “A lot of people turn to them when they want their local news.” With the addition of online versions that offer extra features like photo galleries and video, staff and guest blogs, plus opportunities for reader feedback, community newspapers are well placed to survive the digital revolution, albeit in an unknown-as-yet format. Of course, it isn’t all good news. Classified revenue, once called a “river of gold” by Rupert Murdoch, has all but dried up in the face of free online classified sites like Craigslist; display-ad revenue is down nationally, and quality and quantity of editorial content varies with ownership and publisher. Last year, Tribune and CanWest Global Communications Corp. (the previous owner of this paper), the largest newspaper owners in the U.S. and Canada, respectively, filed for bankruptcy protection because of acquisition-related debt. Canwest’s newspaper arm was sold to a group of creditors and became Postmedia Network. Ownership by major media conglomerates is not a new development in this market; it hasn’t changed much in the 13 years that Affleck has been with BCYCNA. “There were three dominant players then, there are three dominant players now.” Some of the companies and faces may have changed, but the general composition of the media has not. “If there’s a model that needs to be fixed, let’s talk about that,” says Roberts. To improve the bottom line, some of these major players have slashed budgets, cut staff and tightened editorial percentages across the board at their papers, regardless of performance. Meanwhile. independent newspapers have the advantage of being more nimble, responding quickly to a rapidly changing industry and can devote more resources to quality content and their online editions.
“The real challenge is to be part of these larger corporations . . . the problem is not that people don’t want and support newspapers,” concludes Roberts. ••• A year ago, five major magazine companies — Condé Nast, Hearst Magazines, Meredith Corporation, Time Inc and Wenner Media — jointly announced the launch of one of the largest print advertising campaigns ever created to promote the vitality of magazines as a medium. That campaign —“Magazines, The Power of Print” — is still running. According to the original press release about its launch, “it seeks to reshape the broader conversation about magazines, challenge
misperceptions about the medium’s relevancy and longevity, and reinforce the print medium’s important cultural role.” One headline reads: We Surf the Internet. We Swim in Magazines. In part, the text underneath says “a new medium doesn’t necessarily displace an existing one. Just as movies didn’t kill radio. Just as TV didn’t kill movies. An established medium can continue to flourish so long as it continues to offer a unique experience.” The same is true of community news. You’re still reading — and we’re still here. have your say at nsnews.com

NORTH SHORE RESIDENT SUPPORTS EYE CARE PROJECTS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD

Vision for the future

A North Shore resident has stepped outside of her comfort zone to give sight to people in the developing world. Georgina Murphy, a buyer and product developer at Suntech Optics, a North Vancouver-based sun and reading glasses distribution company that designs, develops
and markets their brands internationally, has for the last year, been a volunteer with the Third World Eye Care Society. It’s been an eye-opening experience to say the least. “Having been involved in eyewear for the last five years here at Suntech and just being able to see what a different impact that has on somebody else in the world; it’s not somebody here buying a pair of reading glasses so they can read the newspaper a bit better, it’s giving somebody a pair of glasses so that they can thread a needle to be able to actually work or something like
that. That kind of impact, that kind of perspective, really made a difference to me,” she says. Based in Vancouver, the Third World Eye Care Society was founded by optometrist Marina Roma-March. Born in the Philippines, Roma-March was inspired to start the organization by her grandmother, who came from a small fishing village and encouraged her to go back and do her part to help those in need. profit collects eyeglasses and distributes them, and conducts eye exams in developing countries. Suntech has been involved with the society since fall 2008. Along with partner London Drugs, they organize an annual month-long promotion, Get Style, Give Sight, where for every pair of Infokus reading glasses sold through the retailer, Suntech donates a pair to the Third World Eye Care Society. This year’s campaign, held Jan. 10-Feb. 16, saw Suntech Optics donate more than 5,000 pairs to the society. They plan to repeat the promotion in 2012. In addition, Murphy opted to personally volunteer with the Third World Eye Care Society. In November 2010, she went to Olongapo City in the Philippines for an 18-day eye care mission. While there, she participated in nine full days of clinics. “We set up a makeshift clinic there that had five different stations that patients would go through, then they would get their prescription and dispensed glasses,” she says. “I was lucky enough to work on visual acuity so we really got to interact with everybody that came through our station. . . . Being able to greet everybody with a smile and receive one in response, it was amazing. It was

Mission members took 12,000 pairs of glasses and saw 5,700 patients and gave away more than 5,000 pairs of glasses. The remaining pairs were brought back to Canada and will be distributed during the next mission, to Nicaragua, in November 2011. Murphy plans to go on that trip as well. Community members wishing to contribute to the Third World Eye Care Society can send their old glasses (prescription and/or readers) to: Third

Walking club warms the heart

WHEN members of the Lynn Valley Seniors Walking Group head off from their home base of Mollie Nye for their weekly excursion, their exuberance is clearly evident.
“The co-ordinator, she used to say to us, ‘Wow, you guys look so happy!” says group leader Del Dimock, 77. The club has long served as a source of fresh air, recreation and friendship. “We have a lot of fun together,” says Dimock. The group currently has 20 members, both men and women 55 and up, all part of the Lynn Valley Seniors Association. They meet Wednesdays, rain or shine, at 9:45 a.m., go for an approximately 90-minute or four milewalk, usually in Lynn Canyon, and then head back to Mollie Nye for a coffee. Once a month they go for lunch. Walks start at Mollie Nye or a variety of other locations on the North Shore and beyond, for example Bowen Island,

In addition to their weekly walks, those involved with the group have forged friendships, spending time together throughout the week, from going dancing to participating in the annual Vancouver Sun Run.

“We’re just a very social group,” says Dimock. As a result of the strong bonds formed, members are there for one another in times of need, for example if someone takes ill or experiences a loss. “There’s some ladies that have been widowed that say that
they wouldn’t have gotten over it, grieving, if it hadn’t been for the walking group,” she says. The group, while close-knit, is always looking to expand. “We love new members,” says Dimock. Cost to attend weekly walks is $2. Info: 604-987-5820.

Exploring wine: a tale of two Trebbianos
WHEN it comes to cruising the wine shelves, how adventuresome are you, really? We wine geeks like to think everyone out there is busy exploring beyond the world of Chardonnay — but we’re not always convinced. This week, for a change of pace we bring you . . . (drum roll) A tale of two Trebbianos. “Trebbiano?” It might surprise you to find out that Trebbiano is the second most

widely planted wine in the world — and its origins date
back to Roman times. In France they call it Ugni Blanc and a whole lot of it winds up as Cognac. Not surprisingly, it’s pretty big in Italy — which is how it came to be in B.C. Way back in the ’70s, maverick vineyard owner Joe Busnardo planted it in Oliver on his Divino Estate, now known as Hester Creek. As an aside, Busnardo upped stakes in 1996 and moved to Vancouver Island, where he re-established Divino at Cobble Hill, planting a range of varieties — including, of course, Trebbiano. If you ever wanted a clue to his “out of the box” approach, we can’t resist this classic Busnardo-ism from the current Divino website: “There are only two types
of wines. The ones you like and the ones you don’t.” Meanwhile, back in the Okanagan, Busnardo’s quite visionary legacy lives on at Hester Creek, where the now old vines that he planted, such as Cabernet Franc and Trebbiano, consistently deliver. They’ve also helped carry Hester Creek through a challenging few years, but it’s now fully finding its stride under the direction of winemaker Rob Summers, aided further by the recent arrival of vineyard guru Mark Sheridan (ex Vincor) as general manager. Trebbiano has appeared in Hester Creek’s lineup in various incarnations, perennially proving itself as the star of a handful of B.C. late harvest wines (all too

often overshadowed at the time by our preoccupation with icewine). The “regular” table wine always makes a respectable showing in the white lineup, usually playing second fiddle only to Pinot Blanc. If you check out the current vintage you’ll find some honey aromas followed by tropical and stone fruit notes on a quite luscious palate, underpinned by respectable acidity. It’s available at Everything Wine, VQA stores, $19-$20. This time of year, with spring very much in the air, we start sniffing around for value-priced drops that qualify as Belly’s Best Stalwart Summer Sippers. The latest contender just happens to be — you guessed it — a Trebbiano, and one with a little bit of history. If you cast your mind back long enough, a decade or more, to the days before the Yellow Tail tsunami, you might recall that the biggest selling brand in B.C. was budget-priced Farnese — that just rocketed off the shelves. Well, Farnese is back,
and while the ’09 Dauna Sangiovese delivers a gently rustic, black cherry and leathery toned mouthful (BCLS $8.99, $7.99 in April), it’s the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo 09 that made Hired Belly’s SSS cut. We’re pretty sure that when the temperature starts edging up, you’ll want at least a couple of bottles chillin’ of this crisp, dry, citrus and slightly mineral-toned drop with bright acidity and not even a splinter of oak — that might just make you want to run out and shuck a dozen oysters. But don’t serve it too cold! It’s a deal: (BCLS) $8.99. In screwcap, too. Belly’s Budget Best ■ Sabor Real (Toro) 2006. Not the most stellar label on the shelf, so you’ll have to look hard for it. But what’s inside the bottle makes up for any graphic shortcomings. Spain’s Toro has been a region to watch for while now, and this wine punches above its price with a wellstructured, spicy-savoury, chewy black fruit palate to deliver, as it promises, “True Flavour.” Think hearty stews or peppery chorizo with pork belly. BCLS Specialty $16.99. hiredbelly.com

Chinon forest: The Château d’Ussé is located in the commune of RignyUssé in the Indre-etLoire département, in France. The stronghold at the edge of the Chinon forest overlooking the Indre Valley was first fortified in the eleventh century by the Norman seigneur of Ussé, Gueldin de Saumur, who surrounded the fort with a palisade on a high terrace. The site passed to the Comte de Blois, who rebuilt in stone. — Wikipedia

CYCLING THROUGH THE LOIRE VALLEY
Judi Lees
Fairy tale ride
Contributing Writer
CHINON, France: Pedalling through the Loire Valley, alongside brilliant yellow fields of mustard, down country lanes bordered by blue irises and red poppies, past ripening vineyards and ancient châteaux, I’m prepared to believe I’m in a fairy tale. And in a way, I am: I’m headed to Sleeping Beauty’s castle. With three friends I am taking Detours in France’s self-guided cycling trip, following the signs for “La Loire à velo,” the bike path along the Loire River. On this tour (normally five days and four nights, but it can
be customized) accommodation is pre-arranged and luggage looked after — we only need to show up in time for dinner. We will spend our days strolling the exquisite gardens at Villandry, admiring the Italian Renaissance architecture of the Château Azay le Rideau with its beautiful arches over the Indre River, exploring sleepy valley hamlets and climbing hills to vineyards where we will reward ourselves with glasses of wine. (The Loire is fairly easy cycling, but it does boast some challenging hills.) Of all the jaw-dropping moments on the trip the highlight is perhaps the moment when we first catch sight of the Château d’Ussé. This is the castle that the French writer Charles Perrault had in mind when he penned La Belle au bois dormant — better known to us as the tale of Sleeping Beauty.
Perrault wrote the story in 1697, having visited the château. Originally a fortress, but much-changed over the centuries, by Perrault’s time it had lost almost all of its defenses and added the lovely formal gardens visitors see today. The château is still lived in, but visitors can tour parts of it, including the secret tunnel that its inhabitants could use to escape into the Forêt de Chinon, and what’s now known as Sleeping Beauty’s Tower, which gives panoramic views of the Loire and Indre valleys. At the end of our day’s 36-kilometre ride (the distances cycled varied from 32 to 50 kilometres a day) we pedalled into Chinon. A pretty city with a medieval fortress, it was here, in 1429, that Joan of Arc persuaded the French dauphin to give her an army with which to See Chinon page 20

fight the English. You can still see 600-year-old half-timbered houses in rue Haute St-Maurice, where Joan of Arc stayed. Chinon was also the birthplace of the writer François Rabelais (1494-1533), known for his bawdy eat-drink-and-be-merry tales. If we had come in August we could have been part of the Marché Rabelais, when events take place throughout Chinon’s old quarter. There’s a crafts fair, singing and dancing and people dressed in period costume. Having worked up a thirst, we stopped first at Couly Dutheil Cellars for a tasting and to purchase a few bottles. Then, bumping on our bikes down the city’s cobbled streets, we came to our accommodation for the night, the Gargantua, built in the 15th century and named after Rabelais’ most famous series of tales. Up the well-worn, circular staircase to our rooms we went, thinking, perhaps a bit hazily, of Rabelais’ philosophy: “Drink well, drink always.” If you go: For more information on Detours in France visit its website at www.detours-in-france.com. YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL CREHAN CUP TRIFECTA
Girls’ teams take top spots Argyle, Handsworth and Carson Graham senior girls teams qualify for B.C. AAA provincial championships
Benjamin Alldritt
balldritt@nsnews.com
NORTH Shore schools continued to dominate senior girls basketball this past weekend, with Argyle, Handsworth and Carson Graham sweeping the top three berths at the Lower Mainland’s Crehan Cup. The all-North Shore final, hosted by Handsworth and won by Argyle 69-64, was a measure of revenge for the Argyle Pipers. After besting the Royals in both their regular season encounters, the Pipers were beaten in their own gym for the North Shore title, Argyle had the sixth straight for three players Handsworth. But despite their named as hunger for payback, all-stars Argyle coach Digby Leigh said the real and captain pressure was on his Stephanie Bell squad in the Lower Mainland semi-finals got the nod as against the Kitsilano Blue Demons. tournament “For both our teams, MVP. that was really the key because it gets you into the final and the first or second seed coming out of the Lower Mainlands and then you’re assured of going to the provincial tournament,” he said. “A little bit of the pressure comes off and then you’re able to get a bit back to just playing and competing and the fun of the game. “A goal I always go into the season with is trying to make sure the kids have every opportunity. Once you’ve reached that level and you know you’ll be able to play in the provincial tournament, it takes a bit of the edge off.” “We played strong all through the tournament, but when we got to the Handsworth final, it really became a tremendous basketball game with a lot of ebbs ands flows,” Leigh said. “It was really a great basketball game. We started off ahead, but they climbed right back on top of us. We had a couple of key baskets to be down by one at the half. We started strong in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter we had a nice double-digit lead, but they kept competing and hit really key, long, tough shots to get back within one. Our kids did a really nice job of calmly executing at the end and closing the game out.” Argyle also had three players named as all-stars and their captain, Stephanie Bell, got the nod as tournament MVP. The B.C. AAA championships will take place at Capilano University from March 9 to 12.

HONEY - Ken Frederick It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Ken F. Honey, February 24, 2011, at Evergreen House. Born on March 2, 1924 in Winnipeg, he was the oldest of three boys and was lovingly raised by his mother and grandmother. Ken is predeceased by his long-time companion Joyce Winifred Brown in 2006, and his youngest brother Alfred. He is survived by his brother John Honey of Winnipeg. Ken is lovingly remembered by his long time friend Margie Goodman of North Vancouver and her family. Ken enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 17, during WWII, and was part of the 431 Squadron. After discharge, he worked in various jobs in sales and as a broker, but his real passion was photography. Ken was regarded as an exceptional photographer, including having his work published by Playboy; and worked with the best in his field, earning their deep respect and admiration. He maintained a lifelong appreciation of beauty. Ken and Joyce were strong advocates for the rights of animals. In their lifetime they rescued and adopted many needy dogs and cats and this provided them with happiness. A very special thank you to the staff of Evergreen House for their loving care to Ken since March of 2006. Ken thrived during his stay there and was always comfortable. Thanks to Marlene, James and Annie, who provided wonderful companionship and friendship. Ken looked forward to his weekly outings and adventures with them. In Ken’s memory, donations can be made to the SPCA, or to a charity of your choice.

WILLIAMS, Louis Allan, QC May 22, 1922 – February 28, 2011
After a long and fulfilling life, and some years of illness in his old age, Allan passed away at the age of 88 years. He will be dearly missed by his family and remembered by many for his service to his profession and his community. Allan was a man devoted to all that is good in family and society. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marjorie, who was his partner and strength for 62 years; his three children and their spouses, Louis (Elisabeth Burgess), Leslie (Shep Alexander) and Jane (Gary Brookes); his grandchildren John, Scott (Katja), Todd, Mark, Ashley, Jeremy, Ted, Sam and Amelia; and his great granddaughter Virginia. Born in Glenavon, Saskatchewan and raised until age 17 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Allan moved with his parents to Vancouver B.C. in 1936. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1945. Allan and Marjorie were married in 1948 and made their home in West Vancouver in 1949. For over 60 years, Allan’s home was West Vancouver. Although he and Marjorie enjoyed their many travels throughout the world, he was always glad to return to the Gisby Street house they had built, or, in his later years, to the view of Ambleside from their apartment home. In 1950, Allan earned a law degree from the University of British Columbia and was called to the bar. In the five decades of his career, Allan combined a successful legal practice with an exceptional career in public service. In 1959, he was appointed to the West Vancouver Municipal Parks and Recreation Commission, a post he held for six years. He was elected as a West Vancouver Municipal Councillor in 1965. In 1966 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia where he served for 17 years as the MLA for West Vancouver-Howe Sound. From 1975 to 1979, Allan served as Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for Native Affairs. In 1979, he was appointed Attorney General for the province and Queen’s Counsel. He served as Attorney General until 1983 when he retired from provincial politics and returned to the practice of law at Davis & Company. As a mentor and advisor to members of the firm, Allan particularly enjoyed his role teaching legal ethics to a generation of young lawyers. At this time he also served as a director of BC Hydro & Power Authority, a Director of the Whistler Land Corporation, a founding member of the RCMP Public Complaints Commission and the BC member of the BC Claims Task Force. Allan’s love for his community of West Vancouver drew him back to public office when, in 1993, he was again elected to West Vancouver Council. He served three terms until his retirement in 2002 at the age of 80. He dedicated his efforts to youth as he supported the construction of the new West Van aquatic centre, the new and upgraded community centers and sports fields. The family is tremendously thankful to the nursing and medical staff at Evergreen House, 1 South, at Lions Gate Hospital, and to Dr. Follows and Dr. Maher for their kind care of Allan in his final years. A private family gathering will honor Allan’s life. To all who knew and admired him, we know Allan’s desire would be for you to live your life fully in service to your family and community. In lieu of flowers or remembrances, please consider contributing to The Pacific Alzheimer Research Foundation, #210-1095 West Pender Street, Vancouver, B.C., V6E 2M6, http://www.parf.ca/4478.html or to a charity of your choice.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your energy rises nicely Sunday/Monday, and some gratifying luck comes your way (Sunday) – but use this energy to deal with governments, to fulfill your obligations, and/or to remove restrictions. The remainder of this week, slow down, retreat, rest and contemplate. One of the most important, exhilarating, freeing, friendly and futureoriented periods of your life begins this week, for an eight-year run. You’ll live more eccentrically, you’ll have little fear, and no patience with conventions. You’ll act unpredictably, and attract some oddballs! Chase money midweek. Errands, Friday. Taurus April 20-May 20: Popularity, optimism, entertainment, light romance and a general joie de vivre fill your days! But retreat briefly Sunday/ Monday: rest, contemplate, be charitable – plan future actions. Your energy and charisma surge Tuesday to Thursday – start important projects (better Wednesday dawn onward). You relate well to males now, whatever your own sex. Chase money Friday on. This day technically begins eight years in which your private life will grow more lively, and your career will benefit from background connections, government involvements, administration and management techniques. Gemini May 21-June 20: The general emphasis lies on career, reputation, dealings with authorities and VIPs, parents and bosses (all of whom might display impatience, temperament, but will quickly “forgive” if you’re sincere). Walk proud, but show eagerness to please. Start things, seek responsibility, ask for a chance to prove yourself! Happiness and optimism, social joys and entertainment “touch you” Sunday/Monday. Retreat to rest, contemplate and plan Tuesday-Thursday. Your energy, charisma and luck surge Friday/Saturday: flirt or achieve! Eight years of exhilarating social life begins this month.
Cancer June 21-July 22: Your career will be unpredictable and exciting for the next eight years. You get a lucky start, for your career is very favoured until June. So use the few months ahead to expand business, to seek a promotion, to display your talents to higher-ups, etc. In the years ahead, your career will feature (or be subject to) these themes: investment, other people’s assets, detective work, research, private arrangements, lifestyle changes – changes in general – high tech, humanitarian or group-oriented activities. Short range: go forward March and May. Save April for “former things.” Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The past 15 years have nudged you toward gullibility that ended in mistrust. You might have been tempted by alcohol, other people’s money, sexual longings, secrecy, etc. Life has been dreamlike, watery – cotton batting, not steel. That ends this week (not entirely, such a long trend will take time to dissolve completely). From here on, for eight years, your mind grows clear, alert. This clarity will end your doubt and suspicion. For the first time in many years, you are cleared to find and wed your true mate. Travel, legal, intellectual, publishing activities will also benefit. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The past seven years have brought you clarity but stress in relationships. You’ve dealt with fascinating but unpredictable people, and your links have gone on and off like a light switch. That ends now: for eight years to come, this “unpredictability factor” will quiet down (but still exist in finances and sex). For 15 years, spirituality, depth, sometimes confusion but a growth-oriented confusion, enters relationships. If single, you are likely to fall in love in a completely different way. Investments, sexual desires begin to enter your thoughts midweek: act soon, not late March.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Sunday/Monday, to some degree, show you what to expect in relationships for the three months ahead. This whole month shows you what is ending in work, and what is beginning in work and relationships, for years to come. OK, that’s cryptic. For the next eight years, relationships become true, loving, laughing, friendly, stressful, unpredictable. If single, you’ll likely find your true love – or one of them. For 15 years (technically starting early April) you’ll find your “true vocation.” It might be in film, charity, spirituality, pharmacology. Gentle love, late week. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Tackle chores Sunday/ Monday. Fresh faces and opportunities arrive Tuesday to Thursday – love might be in the air! Large finances, secrets and sexual promptings stir you Thursday night to Saturday – be a little cautious, especially Friday night. Don’t take big risks. This week starts eight years of slightly erratic employment and health factors: your employment prospects will improve in any area associated with food or shelter; for good health, you’ll need to avoid stress. April begins 15 years of true love prospects – but they might come early, this week and next! Chase beauty, art. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You’re tired, in a wee hibernation mode until March 20 – pamper yourself, don’t overwork. Romance, charming kids, pleasure and creativity make Sunday/Monday interesting. Tackle chores midweek. Relationships are bittersweet (or affectionate and snarling) Friday/Saturday. Be diplomatic on the home front all March. Soon (April, technically, though it might have started even in 2010) a 15-year trend of “normalization” will enter your domestic sphere. You’ll find your true home. This Friday begins eight years of exciting, unexpected romantic, creative lightning bolts!

Mar. 6 - Mar. 12 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Communications, paperwork, details, errands, casual friends, short trips and curiosity fill this week and next. In the slowest, most gradual way, like water on blotting paper, this area of your life will grow for the next 15 years. At the same time (perhaps illogically) your worries about money and income will fade. You enter eight years of “home excitement” this week. This can have a negative effect, bringing more stress to the home (so relax, exercise, guard digestion) and a positive one: money made from property, food/shelter areas. A big new life! Midweek joy, romance. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Chase money this week and next. Don’t spend! A sea change is looming in your earnings area. For the next 15 years, your income will stabilize (despite your worries!) – in fact, you’ll hit the “central channel” of your life’s earnings trends. Your income will tend to expand in these (and similar areas): government, welfare, social work, hospitals, institutions, sympathy, film, pharmacology, assembly lines, interest rates, oceans, sea food, gas/oil, hydrology.... This week begins eight years of friendly meetings, travel, communications – love starts to become possible! Rest midweek. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: From this week onward, the tension, excitement, nervous energy and restlessness of the past seven years will fade, to be replaced by 15 years of expanding consciousness, more sleep, more dreams, expanding spirituality. Nuance, poetic feelings, indescribable, subtle joys will become your everyday companions. Others will be inexplicably drawn to you. Rely more on your intuition, less on logic. You’ll see beyond the petty things of life. You’ll begin to wonder if money and power might be the wrong goals. But chase money Sunday! Travel midweek. Soak up nature Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

- Enclosed with the letter you are told you have to pay a levy for having an oil tank on your property. Did you know the data on file was compiled by summer students in 1989 - 1991!!! - Why should you have to pay a levy charge for something you never put in the ground or used. - A North Shore News article dated January 12, 2011 shows West Vancouver District’s attempt at cleaning up these messes.
If you do indeed have a tank save yourself financially – call us to pump it.
