Teen arrested for sprinklertriggering crank calls Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
NORTH Vancouver RCMP are recommending 19 charges against a Surrey teenager for a series of alleged prank calls last month that convinced hotel guests and restaurant staff to turn on sprinklers and other fire suppression systems, causing over $100,000 in damage. The 16-year-old was arrested in Nanaimo after Internet sleuthing by both RCMP and a Province reporter pointed to the teen. Corp. Peter DeVries, spokesperson for the North Vancouver RCMP, said the teen is known to police in Surrey for a similar incident in the past. During the investigation, police searched a home in Surrey under warrant and seized computer equipment. Investigators believe some of the calls were routed though Skype, a phone system that works over the Internet, through a server address in the United States. DeVries didn’t specifically link the teen’s alleged actions to any known prank websites, but said events in the North Vancouver case had many of the same hallmarks. A group of Argyle secondary students visiting Japan this week is doing well after being forced to change destinations mid-flight due to the magnitude-8.9 earthquake that struck the nation Thursday night. The 22 students and four chaperones were on their way to Tokyo when the disaster struck, causing their pilot to reroute to Sapporo, located on the northern island of Hokkaido. They’ll be staying there until further plans are discussed, according Victoria

Miles, spokeswoman for the North Vancouver School District. “The intention, it’s agreed amongst the parents and the staff, is to bring them home as soon as possible,” said Miles. Lynn Valley resident Carrie Bulger has been exchanging phone calls and text messages with her husband Murray, one of the teachers leading the trip, since the incident occurred. “He said the kids are all in really good spirits still and they’re all safe,” said Bulger.
The trip was organized for students in the school’s digital media academy and was meant to provide insights on Japanese pop culture, animation and video game design. “It’s heartbreaking. He’s been planning this trip for a year, so their itinerary was just awesome. They were going to go to all the most amazing places.” Bulger first learnt of the earthquake, which struck the northeast coast of Japan, when she was tracking her husband’s flight online and found that there was no information. Although she panicked at the time, she feels better about the situation now that she knows the group is out of danger. See Quake page 5

Metro strategy calls for development above 1,200 feet
Niamh Scallan
nscallan@nsnews.com
WEST Vancouver has thrown its support behind Metro Vancouver’s contentious regional growth strategy after a heated debate in council chambers Monday evening.
In a split 5-2 decision, councillors voted to approve the new plan that has stirred controversy among West Vancouver residents for its inclusion of a new “urban containment boundary.” The line runs above the district’s sacrosanct 1,200foot upper limit and into an area currently designated as “less intensive development” in district policy. Councillors approved the regional growth strategy on the condition that Metro Vancouver amend the plan to include full protection of West Vancouver’s Old Growth Conservancy. They also required Metro to expand a “special study area” to land above the 1,200-foot line included in the new urban boundary. The study would provide the district with two years to hatch a land-use strategy for the Upper Lands. “I think we’re in a fortunate position,” Mayor Pam Goldsmith-Jones said. “We’re going to take two years and our regional context statement is going to express the values expressed tonight. We’re not accepting generalities.” But Couns. Michael Lewis and Bill Soprovich refused to support Metro’s new growth strategy, arguing that it fails to respect West Vancouver’s values and strips the district of its decision-making powers in the Upper Lands. “The issue is not whether or not there is going be development above or below the 1,200 foot level,” Coun. Lewis said. “The discussion is who decides, and my view is the citizens of West Vancouver decide. I do not have the assurances from what I have seen from Metro Vancouver . . . that we do control our own destiny.” “Why would we be part of a plan that doesn’t support us?” Coun. Soprovich said. “I don’t think that we should put the destiny of our lands in anybody else’s hands but our own.” But for Coun. Trish Panz, the pending changes to See Smith page 5

Unsafe West Van work site nets roofer $145,000 penalty Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
THREE of the top 10 fines handed out last year by WorkSafe BC for workplace health and safety violations were to companies based on the North Shore.
That included the highest fine of more than $145,000 levied from Penfold’s Roofing after inspectors noted workers repeatedly failing to wear fall protection while working on roofs at three different job sites last year. According to WorkSafe’s inspection report, two of Penfold’s roofers at a Lawson Avenue site were working between 4.5 and six metres off the ground without proper safety gear. Inspectors had noted similar infractions during visits to Penfold’s work sites on Capilano Road and Indian River Road earlier in the year. Another local company slapped with a hefty fine was Davey Tree Expert Co., after one of its workers was seriously injured while falling a tree at Capilano University. According to an inspector’s report, “This firm failed on numerous occasions to adequately train, instruct and supervise its workers to fall trees safely.” Last year, a worker was cutting down a tree at the university when part of the trunk split off and hit the worker, causing serious injuries, including loss of one eye.

WorkSafe handed Davey a $90,000 fine, which is currently under review. The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympics also made the top-10 list last year after being fined $75,000 when workers at Cypress Mountain, one of the Olympic venues, climbed on to platforms as high as 14.5 metres using vertical poles instead of a scaffold. Inspectors also noted VANOC failed to coordinate the health and safety of workers who were employed by various contractors at the site. Those big-ticket fines were among total penalties of more than $427,500 handed out to 22 North Shore companies by WorkSafe BC for not complying with regulations. Most of the companies were in the construction business and the majority of incidents involved roofers not wearing proper fall protection. Other safety problems cited in reports included two workers for Dan-Ex Contracting Ltd. working in a 2.5-metre deep excavation where the sides weren’t adequately sloped or supported. In another cases, a concrete pumper truck operated by Sidhu Concrete Pumping Ltd. was set up with its stabilizing outrigger on uneven ground. A total of 256 fines adding to more than $3 million were given to B.C. companies last year.
that were targeted by the caller between Feb. 11 and 13 weren’t laughing after finding themselves knee-deep in postprank repair bills. The caller, posing variously as a sprinkler maintenance worker, a police officer and a hotel staff member, phoned rooms at the North Vancouver Hotel on Capilano Road and convinced several guests to set off their sprinkler systems. More calls came in over the next two days to the hotel and a series of restaurants. Among these was Nando’s Chicken on Lonsdale Avenue, where employee Loraine Sano picked up the phone. “He said you have to pull an alarm, that there’s a fire in the building,” she told the North Shore News at the time. DeVries said Friday the cleanup for many businesses was extensive. “In some cases they were filling the kitchen with fire suppressant foam,” he said. “The damage that it caused has been significant.” DeVries said in addition to the physical damage, the crank calls abused the victims’ sense of trust — which could be dangerous if officials had to call them in a real emergency. “It’s the classic Never Cry Wolf scenario,” he said. The teen was being held in a youth detention facility Friday while Crown counsel reviewed the recommended charges.
Review of fire services stokes amalgamation debate Niamh Scallan
nscallan@nsnews.com
A report on North Shore fire services has reignited the debate over amalgamation of the community’s fire departments.
The report, created for the district by Dugal Smith and Associates last year, tracked the three North Shore fire units’ record in cooperating and collaborating services since the move to standardize operations to “reduce costs and improve service.” West Vancouver’s chief administrative officer Grant McRadu reviewed the document and tabled his findings at a Monday council meeting. His review outlined inefficiencies and difficulties in the current service model. Presenting the report to councillors, West Vancouver fire chief Jim Cook said there was a “high degree of cooperation between the three North Shore fire departments.” But the district review highlighted major barriers to increasing cooperation between the departments. According to the review, “it is difficult for any one individual, department or municipality to drive change in the fire service without the authority or agreement to do so. The district review also stated that the current cooperation model’s predicted annual cost savings — estimated at $513,000 — is “likely a
long term rather than a short term possibility.” Coun. Michael Smith voted against council’s decision to receive the 2010 report. “I’m a little bit disappointed here,” Smith said. “Clearly, this is not acting in the best interest of taxpayers. . . . We have to look for better efficiencies.” Echoing the concerns in McRadu’s review, Smith called for one central fire services organization on the North Shore to reduce costs and improve service efficiencies. “Nobody will address the issue on the North Shore that we have three chiefs and three bureaucracies,” he said. “If we had one central command, one chief and one bureaucracy for the North Shore, all the fire-fighters would be trained under the same training department. It makes so much sense that nobody can speak against it.” “Politicians and bureaucrats are lagging behind everybody else,” he added. But Coun. Bill Soprovich spoke out against Smith’s comments, calling for a focus on safety rather than cost savings. “What do you put first, efficiencies or safety?” Soprovich asked. “There are no guarantees that a combined service is going to be safer for our citizens.” District staff is expected to return to council with feedback on the fire services review in July 2011.

Pattison climbs Forbes list West Van billionaire ranked third in Canada in annual tally
WEST Vancouver entrepreneur Jim Pattison is the third richest man in Canada and ranks 173rd in the world, according to Forbes magazine’s annual list of billionaires.
Pattison, 82, whose net worth is estimated at $5.8 billion, moved up 39 spots from last year’s rankings. As president and founder of the Jim Pattison Group, the third largest privatelyowned company in Canada,
Pattison’s business ventures include car dealerships, grocery store chains, real estate development and radio and television stations in B.C. and Alberta. He also owns the rights to the popular reality TV series Ripley’s Believe it or Not! and the Guinness World Records franchise. All told, 24 Canadians made the Forbes list in 2011, with a combined fortune of $85 billion. Topping the list is media mogul David Thomson, whose $23-billion net worth puts him at 17th in the world. Chip Wilson, the Vancouver-
BILLIONAIRE Jim Pattison based founder of Lululemon Athletica Inc., also made the cut for the first time this year with a cool $1.9 billion. According to Forbes,
Canada has lost its status as the country with the most billionaires in the Americas outside of the U.S. That distinction now goes to Brazil, which claimed 30 billionaires this year. The global total of billionaires is at 1,201, the highest it’s ever been, with a combined wealth of $4.5 trillion. A recipient of both the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, Pattison has taken up a number of philanthropic causes in his lifetime, including, most recently, a $5 million donation to the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation. — Manisha Krishnan

“My husband, he lived in Japan for three years, he speaks Japanese, he’s an excellent teacher, really level headed, so I’m confident there. All the teachers and the chaperones along the trip, I know them all personally so . . . I know that they’re going to be doing the right thing.” Staff and councillors at the City of North Vancouver were also voicing concern on Friday after learning the massive earthquake had struck near Chiba, Japan — a sister city to North Vancouver for more than 40 years. “It’s our sister city,” said City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto on Friday about his municipality’s special relationship with Chiba. “We’re very concerned at the city here.” Mussatto said staff had sent emails to their counterparts in Chiba, but hadn’t received any word back by Friday afternoon. News reports on the earthquake showed an oil refinery in Chiba on fire. One of the country’s major airports, Narita, was also shut down there Friday. Mussatto, who has visited Chiba with municipal delegations, said the modern city of about a million residents is very aware of earthquake risk in the design of their buildings. But he added many
more people live in apartment buildings than they do here and there are also many older buildings in the city that are vulnerable. Mussatto said it’s important for everyone to remember that in the event of an earthquake, “You have to be personally prepared for three days,” because governments may not be able to step in and help immediately following a disaster. Mussatto said a group of high school band students from Chiba had planned to visit North Vancouver at the end of March, and the mayor of Chiba had also planned to visit as part of his honeymoon this spring. “We have no word on that now,” he said.

Smith pans ‘scare tactics’ From page 3 West Vancouver’s land designation offers the district new opportunities to address conservation and boundaries in the Upper Lands. “We do need to have a little bit of flexibility in that 1,200foot line in order to do the best job for the mountainside in the future,” she said. “I understand the issues that people have, but we do need to have a conversation about the Upper Lands and I think this is an opportunity coming out of these discussions.” Coun. Michael Smith also voiced strong support for the regional growth strategy, calling many of the arguments opposing the plan “scare tactics.” “Just because we’re agreeing with the regional planning strategy does not mean that we’re surrendering our right to deal with land in our own municipality,” he said, responding to opposition from Coun. Soprovich and Coun. Lewis. “We have to be part of a regional planning body.” Metro Vancouver released the draft regional growth strategy to the region’s municipalities in January. All 21 municipalities have until March 22 to respond to the plan. According to the Metro Vancouver website, West Vancouver is the eleventh municipality to accept the strategy.

HEdevastatingearthquakethat struck Japan Thursday night, coming as it did during the continuing turmoil in North Africa, presents something of a test for the global media’s social conscience. Forweeksnow, theworld’sattention has been fixed on the upheaval in the Arab world, and especially on Libya, where the regime’s determination to cling to power has given rise to atrocities against civilians. The events in Japan threaten to break that focus, however, as images of that new crisis supercede the aging narrative in North Africa. There is nothing unusual in this shift, of course. News outlets naturally seek out the freshest and most dramatic events in their efforts to draw audiences. But unlike many such transitions, this one could have

serious consequences for a great number of people. Many of those facing down regimes in Libya and elsewhere are doing so largely unarmed. In these cases, the most powerful weapon at their disposal is the press. Unwanted attention from the global community is one of the few things holding many undemocratic governments in check. If the reporting ceases, if the world’s attention waivers, that weapon will be removed, and there will be little stopping those in power from dealing with their opponents in brutal fashion. It is important to report on the disaster in Japan and to encourage other nations to help, but in doing so, we in the media must not forget our responsibility to the powerless in other parts of the world.
Tax mob targeting wrong monster
COME budget season, local governments take a lot of heat.
So why is it that local taxes go up year over year? A good government. I always figured that accessibility — both chunk of the budget is made up of contracts that are at council and at the grocery store — was a part of it, largely or entirely out of the municipalities’ control. province savaged arts funding last year, but Victoria still ran huge deficits. Imagine the protests if they had really balanced their books. Senior government can also simply opt out of services to trim their spending. The federal government got out of the housing business some decades ago, and the province has essentially dropped the child protection business as well. There are real, terrible consequences for this, but they aren’t brought home to the taxpayers and voters the same way turning off the water or not picking up the garbage would. So when times are hard, local government goes back to the same property-tax well. Many of those provincially or federally abandoned services wind up begging in front of municipal councils. Councillors routinely face a choice between making a point at the expense of children/arts/homeless people/seniors or heaving more weight onto their ratepayers’ shoulders. For the past year, however, staff at the District of North Vancouver have been plugging away at a plan to minimize the springtime anguish. They’re looking to find about $7 million in savings over the next five years, of which they’ve already found $1.8 million. Two people have lost their jobs outright, six have taken early retirement, and staffing overall has been pared down by the equivalent of 25 full-time positions. Services like community police stations are being moved out of leased buildings and tucked into space in existing municipal buildings. Some advisory boards — like the joint bicycle advisory committee — were folded into others to save staffing costs. Not exactly

Me generation develops the i-narcissist
THERE are countless things to worry about for parents when it comes to our children’s wellbeing — whether they’re too fat or too thin, too bookish or not bookish enough, scholastically bright or far behind, ultraaggressive or superwimpy.
Now, an expert has come up with another to add to the list: narcissism. “Do you blog about your children? Do you share photos and information about them over Facebook and Twitter? You may be raising a narcissist,” warns a promotional release for a book by Texas-based psychologist Dr. Larry Bugen. Gosh, what was his first clue? Bugen’s book is called Stuck on Me: Missing You. . . Getting Past Self-Absorption to Find Love. He says in the release, strangely aimed at me (cough), that these days, 81 percent of the world’s children have an “online presence” before the age of two. “That means that four out of five children have a projected image before they have personally shaped an identity.” According to him, parents’ tendency to blog about their children’s achievements and assets is a sad reflection of our desperate need to bask in their reflected glory.
Going Coastal
Kate Zimmerman Now, this is nothing new. Anybody who’s read one of those mass Christmas mailings sent by proud elders about their little geniuses has seen this phenomenon up close. There have always been parents who’ve draped their living rooms in their kids’ trophies and who can’t have a single conversation without reciting the accolades their progeny have received. Happily, they rarely twig to the fact that the acquaintance they’re bombarding has secretly pressed the virtual snooze button. But these days, the playing field for childish ego-building is positively immense. YouTube, for one, provides doting parents with a potentially massive audience for even the least manually dexterous toddler’s Cheerio retrieval, and they blithely twitter about their sweet cuddlebun’s every gas-induced smile. Selfabsorption expert Bugen suggests that children eventually get addicted to
both being bragged about by Ma and Pa in cyberspace and the dopamine high the resulting public attention produces. “Before we know it our children are getting high on themselves,” says the release. And let’s not discount their parental role models. These cocky little attention hounds are, after all, the offspring of parents who have stylish cards printed up so they can importantly exchange them with other mothers to arrange playdates. On a recent episode of some reality TV show or other, a woman dragged her daughters, aged about three and four, into the spa for “their first mani-pedi” with professionals. The kids were having none of it, and good on them. But if Mummy keeps it up, they’re sure to start thinking that having a poorly paid Filipino woman paint their finger- and toenails on demand is simply their regular due. How do you ever say “No” to a child you’ve raised to believe that other people’s luxuries — even impossibilities — are their necessities? As the release points out, we adults routinely announce our most banal events and discoveries on Facebook, just in case somebody out there gives a damn. At the same time, we joyfully swallow the urging of the self-help industry to believe in ourselves and our limitless capabilities, no matter how much evidence there is that

slash-and-burn, but it adds up. The next phase is to look at the various services the district delivers and take the public temperature as to what should be subsidized and to what degree. There’s a reason there aren’t many private swimming pools. But they’ll also look at tax exemptions and rental breaks and various granting programs. So expect to see a survey hitting district doorsteps sometime this year. When I met the district chief administrative officer David Stuart and finance director Nicole Devereaux, they both bristled at the mention of the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses’ damning report on municipal spending. By the way, not since the Canadian Reform Alliance Party have I seen such a poorly chosen acronym. But I digress. The folks at CFIB accused all three North Shore councils of spending like B.C.’s most drunken municipal sailors, well above the product of inflation and population growth. Superficial research to support a pre-ordained ideological goal, said Stuart and Devereaux. Well, OK, but still. “If a business increases spending to invest in the future,” said Devereaux. “They don’t get criticized. It’s deliberate and it’s the right thing to do. That’s what’s missing in their story.”
Which brings me to one of the tougher sentences I’ve written in this corner: You’re probably not being taxed enough. I apologize to my neighbours for the torches and pitchforks assembling on our sidewalk right now. A better way to put that it is that your tax dollars are going to the wrong place. In the next few years, there are going to be two colossal public works projects in Metro Vancouver: new sewage treatment plants and new solid waste incinerators. The costs will run into many billions. In the case of the Lions Gate plant — required by new federal laws — the feds have shamefully failed to produce any money. Asking the three North Shore councils to pay for it is like telling a nine-year-old to pay for the new roof on the house. Sure glad we got to have the G8 over for dinner, though! On a smaller scale, many of the rec centres and bridges and

world of bloggers run amok, of personal information overload, of unchecked and unedited self-importance roaring around the Internet like a billion Hells Angels on crack, who calls “Halt” to the perpetually ego-inflated? It sure ain’t going to be most parents; frankly, we started it. Remember the days when self-deprecation was a treasured norm, and boasting was seen as the height of bad taste? I do — barely. Bugen must look on those times fondly. overpasses that senior government helped pay for in the mid 20th century are now coming up for replacement, and again, senior government is coughing awkwardly and looking the other way. If they don’t face up to it, just wait till you see those property tax notices. And before the letter from MP Andrew Saxton appears, a short-term stimulus program does not replace a consistent longterm infrastructure strategy. Local government, like other government and indeed every human organization, is flawed. But many of its flaws are not of its own making. The funding and responsibility model for municipalities is broken and gives senior government an easy dumping ground. Victoria and Ottawa should answer for their own decisions, not just drop them municipal halls. editor@nsnews.com

said in a press release. The new professorship, which will be named for the donors, is intended to draw women with expertise in social justice issues to teach in the department. Any funds donated by the Grills that reach beyond the $1-million mark will be put toward the university’s Global Stewardship program, a two-year undergraduate program that focuses on numerous issues, such as world politics and social justice, and teaches students “how to become change makers,” according to Capilano’s public affairs manager Shelley Kean. Lee, one of the founding members of the North Shore Women’s Centre, is a community activist for women’s and children’s rights throughout North America. She received an honorary doctorate of laws degree from the university last fall. In 2001, she helped establish the Una Graham and Lee Grills Bursary to support female students. George, former board member for the Vancouver Playhouse
and the Arts Club Theatre, is a supporter of Capilano’s Global Stewardship program. After the March 8 announcement, the Grills said they hope the money will help to promote a greater awareness of women’s issues at the university. “Over many years, I’ve been inspired by incredible women, many of them in this community. And in the future, I’m hoping the same thing will happen for other young people,” Lee said. “As we have thought about ways to give back to the community, we thought this was one of the ways we could do it and leave a legacy,” George added.

A visit to Vern Montgomery’s apartment is like a whirlwind tour of the most beautiful locations the Lower Mainland has to offer.
The talented painter’s walls are covered in a kaleidoscope of colour. Countless rich paintings capture one local scene after another — for example, a view of the Burrard Bridge, a game of volleyball at Spanish Banks and an affective, bright orange sunset. Holder of a PhD in history earned at London’s Kings College, Montgomery
also wrote for a number of music magazines. However, since he was young, he’s had a keen interest in art; and despite the challenging turn his life took in 1990 at 36 when he suffered a brain aneurysm followed by a stroke, it’s never waned. While his speech and mobility have been impacted, and he has limited use
of his right hand, Montgomery has maintained his positive attitude, and he endeavours to bring happiness to others the way he best knows how: through his cheery, lively works. Montgomery’s paintings have been exhibited extensively over the years, See Artist page 15

When asked where his inspiration comes from, Montgomery says (with the help of his supportive sister Vicky Upham), he looks to his surroundings. Everyday places and events captivate his creative eye, urging him to recreate them on canvas. “He sees so much more than we do because we are usually too busy to notice,” she says. Grace* knows her neighbourhood well. For the past 40-odd years, she has lived in the same suite in a low-rise building on a quiet street in Vancouver. She’s close to shopping and transit, which makes it easy to get around. And, as a long-term tenant, her rent is kept at a reasonable amount. At age 69, Grace says she is not a struggling senior, but she still has to watch her budget carefully and is even thinking of looking for part-time work. Getaway for your health DEANA LANCASTER
breaks a sweat checking out the growing trend of fitness vacations.
Glassy, week-old snow crunches underfoot as our small group digs in with snowshoe cleats and climbs the twisting trail past spruce, Douglas fir and cedar. We head east, along the south side of the Cheakamus River. The trail isn’t especially difficult, but my thighs are burning and I’m quickly out of breath. The reason? This isn’t my first bout of physical effort today. We were up with the cloud-covered sun to do a challenging circuit class with trainer Mark Coates (he says it was an hour, but there is no clock in the gym and I’m certain I spent longer than that doing bicep curls and squats and spinning on the stationary bikes). Now he’s leading us on this far-morepicturesque excursion, and while the fresh air feels good, it’s even better when he stops, unslings his backpack and pulls out bags of nutty, thick-sliced bread, a thermos of miso soup, herbal tea and energy bars. Now this is my kind of exercise. Coates is the high-energy coach and managing partner at Innovative Fitness in Whistler, a
new location of the Lower Mainland training company that is tucked into the west wing of the luxe Nita Lake Lodge. The combination of his workouts matched with Whistler’s epic outdoor playground, comfy accommodations at the lodge, its tranquil new Ashram Spa (which also offers yoga classes), and the wholesome, mouth-watering food available throughout the resort makes for an intriguing, and inspiring, take on wellness. It is somehow not as difficult to crank out one more ab roll on the exercise ball when you know you’re booked in at the spa later for for Udvartana, an Ayurvedic treatment that includes full body exfoliation using a specially blended herbal paste. And there’s nothing that eases aching muscles like a gentle, day-after yoga class. It feels like the perfect place to focus on health; it’s hard not to feel good here. That matches well with the philosophy of Innovative fitness, which Coates says is to train toward a final destination, whether it be rehabilitating an injury or training for a triathlon. His clients set goals and Coates helps them to achieve them. The wellness getaways and camps are an extension of that philosophy: guests can book a customized

The notion of getting away for health is one that’s growing in popularity, says Simone Lovell, personal trainer and owner of Eat Play Love Fitness. The company, in operation for six months, coordinates three- and sevenday fitness vacations to the Painted Boat Resort Spa and Marina on the Sunshine Coast.
During the fitness vacation, Lovell and other instructors lead participants though five to six hours of fitness activities a day, including bootcamp, core and ab exercises, hiking and yoga. Healthy meals and a fitness assessment are also

Laser Body Sculpting Works
A TESTIMONIAL
As we get older, the body changes. Shifts in metabolism result in unwanted body fat in places like hips, thighs, necks and tummies. Watching what you eat and getting regular exercise are important components of a healthy lifestyle, but don’t always result in the reduction of unwanted bulges. Deborah is in her early fifties. A former aerobics and fitness instructor, she maintained a healthy diet and exercised regularly, but developed a tummy bulge that wouldn’t go away.
“...I’ve been active in fitness all my life, but I couldn’t get rid of that bulge. I guess it’s a function of aging. Things got loose I as got older.”

“I do 90 minutes of hot yoga almost every day,” says Deborah. “It’s pretty intense. My instructor kept telling me to pull my tummy in, but it was as“in”as it would go. I’ve been active in fitness all my life, but I couldn’t get rid of that bulge. I guess it’s a function of aging. Things got looser I as got older.”
temporary pore in the cell wall, which then repairs itself after 72 hours. It has no effect on any other cells in the body. Deborah was determined to flatten her tummy and didn’t want invasive surgery, so she did some research and found North Vancouver’s Foundation for Integrated Health and Laser Body Sculpting Wellness Clinic. She made some enquiries and booked an appointment. “It was like a trip to the spa. There’s an infrared sauna, a footbath…it’s very soothing. I fell asleep during the treatment. It was so effective and easy I went back for a second session.” Having undergone the laser fat reduction process, today Deborah has the body she knew was possible. “That stuff hanging over my waist? It’s not there anymore. I have a flat tummy and surgery was not an option for me. It’s not
a replacement for exercise but it takes the fat away from the areas that I just couldn’t change from exercise.. It really helped with my yoga and I can wear hipster jeans without worrying.” Dr. Linda Drake of North Vancouver’s Foundation for Integrated Health and Laser Body Sculpting gives more detail on the process: “Our wellness approach to the program includes detoxification, 6 Zerona Laser treatments, infrared sauna, vertical vibration exercise and more. Releasing the fat also releases the primary source of toxin storage in the bodys’fat cells. We give you nutritional support to facilitate this. When you think about this, there is nothing out there that can actually target the fat cell and detoxify at this level. We see the“wellness”of our clients increase - and their“bulges” decrease. We also have a basic program that involves 6 Zerona treatments and supplimentary

Cooking with Cory In the face of adversity, Cory Parsons not only committed himself to his recovery, but to helping others similarly reach for their dreams. A motivational speaker, sports advocate and athlete, the Nanaimo resident has recently added cookbook author to his list of titles. More than just a cookbook, Cooking with Cory: Inspirational Recipes for the Fearless Cook (published by North Vancouver’s Whitecap Books), references Parsons’ personal story of resilience. Twelve years ago, his life took a turn when, at age 23, he had a diving accident. While he’s come to terms with his life-changing spinal injury and made incredible gains, it’s been a tough road. “In the book, I speak of a time when I’m in a hospital bed and . . . I’m frustrated because everything is difficult and new and not the way it was and I was quite sad and upset about it all,” he says. Initially, Parsons was extremely paralyzed, almost to the point of being unable to speak. He recalls a nurse offering words of encouragement, telling him he’d one day regain his independence. “While she’s telling me that, she’s feeding me a spoonful of soup because I’m not able to move my arms at all,” he says. He didn’t believe her, but as time wore on, Parsons’ level of ability did improve. Not only was he able to feed himself, he was able to get back in the kitchen and renew an early interest in cooking.

“I hit the bottom, broke my neck, and that left me in a wheelchair, but that didn’t diminish my passion for cooking or for food,” he says. In recent years, he’s been working on developing a cooking show and opted to write the cookbook. “I wanted to not lay in a bed and have somebody tell me ‘You’re going to be able to do this or you’re going to do that,’” he says. “I wanted to be able to have something tangible in my hands. And I can show up at that hospital . . . when some new poor guy or girl is in there with a spinal injury and someone’s feeding them soup, I can roll in there and say ‘You know what? I’m not going to tell you that you can be independent and cook, I’m going to show you. Here’s a book, here’s videos and this is me, and I was right where you are 12 years ago.’” Parsons hopes the book will have widespread appeal, not just to those with spinal-cord injuries, but to anyone who may be timid in the kitchen. “If I can do it, they can do it. That’s the message behind it.”

Getting the Skinny on Types of Fat Fat gets treated like a dirty word. We avoid it like the plague, searching for “fat-free” labels on food and depriving ourselves of a spoonful of ranch dressing on our salads. But the truth is, fat is an essential part of a healthy diet. Fat helps maintain our body temperature, protects our organs and body tissue and is absolutely essential for carrying fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. In addition, some fats play a large role in brain development, proper wound healing, vitamin absorption, regulating metabolism, controlling inflammation and skin and hair growth. So why does fat get such a bad rap? Because over-consumption
can cause serious problems. Obesity is an excessive accumulation of body fat. Excess body fat clogs blood vessels and makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood through our bodies. Obesity can cause strokes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and some cancers. Furthermore, excess body weight can lead to depression and anxiety. The key to healthy fat consumption is to discriminate between the “good” and “bad” fats, and remember to enjoy fats only in moderation. There are two types of “bad” or unhealthy fats: saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats are found in animal products, like

pork, beef, poultry (with the skin on) and dairy. They can also be found in some vegetable oils, like palm, kernel and coconut oil. The other “bad” fat is trans fat. Trans fats are made through a process called hydrogenation, where manufacturers add hydrogen to unsaturated fatty acids. This increases the shelf life and improves the flavour of foods that contain hydrogenated oil. Trans fats are found in a wide variety of foods, including potato chips, frozen foods, fast food, cake mixes and margarine. Both saturated and trans fats raise the levels of total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in our bodies, reduce our levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good” cholesterol, and increase the risk of coronary heart disease. Then there are the “good” fats: unsaturated fats, specifically polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These fats are usually plant-based, though they are occasionally found in certain meats, and they are usually liquid at room temperature. Unsaturated fats actually reduce blood and LDL cholesterol and raise HDL, or “good” cholesterol. It is considered beneficial because it cleans excess cholesterol out of our bodies and transports it to the liver for processing. Unsaturated fats are commonly found in vegetable oils and nuts. Health Canada recommends no more than 30 per cent of your daily caloric intake be made up of fat, and only 10 per cent of that should be saturated fat. Trans fats are non-essential and should be left out of a healthy diet. In fact, The Trans

Sunday, March 13, 2011 Fats come with benefits, but it’s important to think about consumption. Calories from fats are easily stored in the body and contain more energy than both carbohydrates and protein. If you’re smart about your intake, you will stay fuller longer, and it may cause you to eat less. On the other hand, if you eat an unbalanced

TASTE
Spring brings fresh flavours
Gelato maker has creative taste LAST time we checked in with Bella Gelateria’s James Coleridge, he was busy making the world’s first single-malt gelato, a luxurious, distinctly peaty, Ileach Cask strength Scotch and chocolate creation. Despite its luxury price tag, it sold like hot cakes. Today, the always busy guru of all things gelato will be at Mickey McDougall Community Recreation Centre (200 East 23rd St., 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; $1 admission) for the launch of the Persian community’s Norouz Spring Festival. The reason? Coleridge has turned his talents to creating an extraordinary, delicious Akbar Mashti — an impossibly rich and creamy concoction of saffron, rosewater, small chunks of frozen double cream and pistachio pieces. The item is so popular, the gelato specialist had to rearrange his schedule over the last few days to make what still likely won’t be enough! “Persians love quality,” says Coleridge, who will serve tastes from his freezerequipped cart on traditional noon flatbread. “They (the Canadian Iranian Association) were looking for something authentic — and they found me.” Indeed, he says the Akbar Mashti is such a hit, he even has a new nickname: “Jamshid.” Recently, the premium gelato maker has also turned his attention to all things Japanese, again with remarkable results. While no shortage of local chefs use Kasu (the post-fermentation “must” from Granville Island’s Artisan Sake) to make mayo or marinade sablefish, Coleridge employs it to make a seductively creamy gelato. Fancy more Japanese tastes? Coleridge also makes a delightful, subtle blend of wasabi and ginger gelato, as well as a refreshingly gentle malty Sapporo (beer) sorbetto, as well as black sesame gelato, sake and yuzu sorbettos. Flavours are available only depending on what’s been freshly made at Bella Gelateria. When it’s gone, it’s gone, until the next batch. Also, if you were smart enough to score advance tix to Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival’s Vintners Brunch (the first event to always sell out) you’ll find Coleridge and his cart there too, this time serving tastes of his first

Gewurztraminer Sorbetto — made from Sumac Ridge Gewurz. With Gewurz conquered, can Riesling be far behind? (Well, is Riesling ever far behind?) One of our best food and wine matches this week came with a homemade batch of Julia Child’s foolproof (that’s why we make it) onion soup. Shopping for the basic ingredients — all you need is onions, butter, olive oil, flour and beef stock — we found ourselves wondering what wine would go along. The answer, as in so many cases, turned out to be Riesling. No surprise,
perhaps, considering the home to so many things onion is France’s Alsace. What’s one of the best matches with Alsacienne tarte a l’oignon? You guessed it! Here are two worthy wine picks from opposite ends of the Earth, either of which that will turn your next onion soup (with gruyere and parmesan toasts, of course) into a veritable feast. ■ Preiss Riesling 2009 AOC Alsace. Subtle perfume of stonefruit and chalky notes on top, a refreshingly precise balance of fruit and crisp acidity that makes it a perfect match (especially if you like a drier style) and sound contrast for the sweetness of the soup. BCLS $19.99 ■ Stoneleigh Riesling 2008 Marlborough. We’re always surprised by the value that this entry level Kiwi delivers. The 08 is starting to show some classic development on the nose, along with peach and citrus aromas and juicy lime-citrus on the quite rich palate with a lingering close, all of which picks up on the texture and sweetness of the onions. University grants Capilano University recently received a number of grants from the private sector and the government to fund programming and eco-friendly updates. RBC donated $20,000 to benefit Capilano’s IDEA program, as well as grad shows for the university’s acting for stage and screen and musical theatre programs. Second year students in the IDEA program created Reflections Vancouver 2011, a collection of scenic Vancouver paintings. Students manage the
entire initiative from exhibiting unique paintings, to the design, production, and marketing of their art products. Their goal is to raise funds to support learning. The university was also recently given a $226,159 provincial grant to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions while saving money on energy costs. The money will allow it to save an estimated $52,961 per year in energy costs, while reducing its annual GHG emissions by 95 tonnes. In addition to the provincial grant, the university is receiving $206,435 from BC Hydro and $33,465 from FortisBC, formerly known as Terasen Gas, for a total of $466,059. All 14 buildings on campus
will receive full or partial energy retrofits. The Capilano University capital grant is one of 23 energy improvement projects in colleges, universities, hospitals, health care centres and other public sector buildings throughout the province and generated from B.C.’s Public Sector Energy Conservation Agreement. Credit union booming The North Shore Credit Union achieved decade-high growth in 2010. Loan growth reached $248 million last year, 19 per cent ahead of 2009. Deposit growth was $252 million, up 18 per cent over 2009 and the strongest growth seen in more
than 10 years. Chris Catliff, president and CEO of North Shore Credit Union, said the company seized the opportunity to continue to grow while many other financial institutions were far less aggressive due to recent uncertainties. Net operating income for the year advanced to $11.8 million, compared with $7.6 million in 2009, and return on retained earnings was 14 per cent. Assets under administration grew by $301 million, bringing the Credit Union to nearly $2.4 billion dollars at the end of 2010. Over the last ten years, assets have more than tripled. — Compiled by Manisha Krishnan NEWS photo Mike Wakefield

Software helps reduce carbon footprints Erin McPhee emcphee@nsnews.com
THE founders of a new carbon software company have set out to make it easy and affordable for smallto medium-sized businesses to take action on climate change.

JOE Kelly, co-founder of Gobi Carbon Management Solutions, helps small- to medium sized businesses become more eco-friendly by using software that analyzes their carbon emissions.
NORTHSHORE AUTO MALL 604.984.9211
According to Joe Kelly, co-founder of Gobi Carbon Management Solutions, organizations of all sizes are facing increased pressure to green their operations — in terms of regulatory demands, as well as from consumers. “As people become more aware of the various impacts and risks associated with climate change, they’re expecting the companies that they buy from to be proactive and doing the right thing,” says Kelly, who is also a Capilano University professor in the faculty of tourism and outdoor recreation. Kelly has a PhD in resource and environmental management. Businesses are also facing increased pressure from employees. “People are wanting to go and work for companies that are progressive and making a difference environmentally and socially,” says Kelly. For the last 15 years, Kelly has been working as a consultant, helping businesses, governments and non-profit organizations measure, manage, and reduce their impact on climate change. Many of the organizations he’s worked with have been larger in size. However, time and time again, he’s been approached by smaller companies with the same goal but without the budget to hire someone like him. “I always had this idea in the back of my head to develop a simple, easy-to-use and affordable solution for the small guys and it was just a matter of finding the right technology partners to do that,” he says. A year and a half ago, Kelly partnered with Ken Martin and Randy Yeung, of Surrey-based software development company Passion for Action, and Gobi Carbon Management Solutions, an online tool, was born. “I describe Gobi as ‘QuickTax for carbon’,” says Kelly. Companies subscribe to the system and get the software, GobiSOFT, configured to their organization, identifying their particular emission sources; for example, natural gas used to heat a building, electricity to power lights and office equipment, vehicles the company owns or leases, fuel, air travel, and waste and paper usage. Next, the company inputs all the related data, drawing on utility and fuel bills, travel records and other receipts, and that information is continually updated. With the overall carbon emissions calculated and the ability to analyze the data in a number of different ways, companies can begin to reduce their impact, aided by Gobi. The tool offers simple suggestions like implementing a company policy requiring employees to power down computers at night to more complex and costly initiatives like investing in an energy-efficient heating system. For the complicated and potentially expensive actions, the software offers a tool that lets organizations to calculate the return on investment. “The old adage: You can’t manage what you don’t measure and by keeping a solid, credible, accurate account of your carbon footprint, you’re able to better identify opportunities for reduction and take action on reducing your emissions,” he says. Heli-hikers climb to dizzying heights
Canadian Mountain Holidays making remote areas accessible in the summer Ann Britton Campbell Contributing Writer
IN the Columbian Mountains, B.C.: Jordy Hein is feeling anxious about crossing the 50-metre cable suspension bridge that stretches between two granite spires in the remote mountains of eastern British Columbia. He’s not alone. Gaps between the 90 planks that make up the bridge surface allow plenty of space through which to see the valley floor that is a kilometre below. Truth be told, all 10 members of our climbing group, including me, my two teenage sons and my husband, are nervous about the crossing. Perhaps even a bit terrified. Fellow climber Shawna Fisher recommends a little musical motivation. “Just hum the Indiana Jones theme,” she says sweetly, obviously remembering the suspension bridge featured in the Temple of Doom movie. Hein looks incredulous. “Didn’t that bridge break and people get shot at?” he asks. In the end, we all attach the safety ropes of our climbing harnesses to the bridge’s thick steel cable and summon the courage to walk over the abyss. Once across, it’s a steep climb up a cliffedge route to the top of the second spire. At the summit, we — all mountaineering newbies, if you couldn’t tell — whoop and high-five each other for reaching 2,650 metres on such a challenging route. The climb is one of the extraordinary helicopter-assisted adventures available with CanadianMountainHolidays.Eachsummer, this Banff-based company repurposes its luxurious ski lodges to bring warm-weather hikers to the thrillingly remote Columbia mountain range,
west of the Canadian Rockies. My family trip is based out of the rustically elegant Bobbie Burns Lodge. For three days, we rise early from duvet-covered beds, eat a hearty breakfast, pack a gourmet lunch and load into a Bell 212 helicopter for a quick ride into the high alpine. It feels so decadent: “like eating the tops off all the muffins” is how one avid heli-hiker describes the experience of catching a lift to the drop-dead-gorgeous landscapes seen rarely by even the most hard-core hikers. Under the watchful eyes of our guides, we trek through alpine meadows, beside glaciers and along mountain ridges. At the end of each day, the helicopter whisks us back to the lodge for rest, relaxation and delicious meals served family-style at long wooden tables. The hands-down highlight of our trip is the six-hour climb up, over and down the two granite towers that guides have named Mount Nimbus. (These mountains are so remote that many remain, officially, unnamed.) Mere mortals like my family are able to safely complete the climb thanks to the via ferrata (Italian for “iron road”) a high-alpine route equipped with fixed cables on to which we clip our safety ropes, and iron rungs that we use when hand and foot holds are scarce. The ultimate leap of faith comes near the end of the climb, when, after descending part way down the spire, we rappel 60 metres back to terra firma. Pushing off into thin air, trusting in the skill of our guides who secured our thick ropes, is terrifying and exhilarating and life affirming. Indiana Jones would surely approve. A day trip on a Canadian Mountain Holidays heli-hiking vacation might include crossing this 50-metre-long suspension bridge, with the valley floor — a kilometre below — clearly visible between the bridge slats.

BARR - Karen Ellen (nee Kullberg) Sept. 17,1951- Mar. 01, 2011. It is with much love and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear Karen on March 1st, 2011 at her home in Parksville on Vancouver Island at the age of 59. Born in Comox on September 17,1951, she spent her early years growing up in North Vancouver, attending Ridgeway Elementary, and Sutherland Secondary schools, graduating from Carson Graham High School in 1969. After extensive travel through Europe and the Mediterranean she returned home to the coast, settling on Quadra Island to start a family in the early seventies. There she worked for many years at the April Point Resort on Quadra, enjoying some celebrity there with the clientele and locals. In 1990 she moved to Vancouver to attend Langara College. With a diploma in Home Care Management she then relocated back to Vancouver Island at Naniamo. In the mid nineties she set up an organic produce business in Sooke, west of Victoria, ’Ladybird Farm’ suppling the Sooke Harbour House and various food retailers in the Victoria area for some 15 years before retiring in Parksville. Very much an island gal, she was truly full of life and will be remembered and sorely missed for her energetic and entreprenurial spirit . Karen is survived by her daughter Julia Barr and grandson Joshua in Campbell River, her mother Dolores Herring in San Diego, father Bill Kullberg in Mission, BC, sister Dana Ziegler in Oceanside, Calif., brother Ken Kullberg in North Vancouver, Spark, and those of her extended family. May she have peace amongst the eagles on her beloved west coast.

Helen Doreen “Nana” (nee McGregor) August 15, 1919 – February 28, 2011
Doreen passed away gracefully at Lions Gate Hospital with her loving family at her bedside. Predeceased by eldest son Ellis Pryce-Jones and her sisters Audrey McGregor, Freda Cameron, Jean Gillingham, Tannis Vickerstaff. Survived by her brother Jack McGregor (Ellen). She will be greatly missed by her son Ted, his children: Gabriel (Katie) and Noah (Rachel), their mother, Barbara Montgomery (Peter), her daughter Nance Moseley (Nick) and their children: Daniel, and Gillian McLean (Jordan), honourary son Borge Lind-Petersen (Carol), honourary grandchildren, Hamish Allan-Headley (Scarlett) and Molly Montgomery, and her dear friend and niece Pat Gillingham and her family who lovingly called her their Auntie Doe. Born in Vancouver, B.C. to John and Dora McGregor, she grew up in Kerrisdale and attended Magee High School. She spent every summer from her teen years onwards happily on Bowen Island, her favourite place on earth. She enjoyed the dance hall and at times the famous Princess Line “booze cruises”. She met her future husband, Ray Pryce-Jones on Bowen Island. Doreen and Ray moved to Calgary for a short time during the war and returned to Vancouver in 1945. Doreen was an active member of the Junior League and subsequently joined the Thetis Club participating in many fundraising events with that organization. In 1959, Doreen and Ray moved to Victoria until 1963. Upon their return to the mainland, Doreen and Ray parted ways and Doreen moved to Dundarave in West Vancouver with her 3 children and her mother where she remained until 1976. Doreen was independent and went to work to raise her children while her mother Dora kept the household in order at a time when a single mother was not readily accepted. She was a perfect example of unconditional love to her children and a model of strength and dignity throughout her life. In 1976, Doreen and her partner, Nigel Hale, moved to Bowen Island, winterized the family cottage and led a happy existence. When Nigel passed away, Doreen stayed on, sharing with her grandchildren the wonderful experiences of her life and the joy of Island life. Doreen was always positive, ready to laugh, have a glass of wine, cut a rug and be part of the fun no matter her age or physical condition. Her motto was “don’t worry, be happy” and she was. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday April 9 at Bowen Island United Church, 1120 Miller Road, on Bowen Island at 1 pm for family and her many friends.

He also leaves behind his aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends and acquaintances. Mike touched many people’s lives with his charm, his incredible sense of humor, and his love. He passed with his buddy Diesel, the world’s best dog. Please join us for a Memorial Service to be held at First Memorial Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver on Friday March 18th, 2-5pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice or another charity of your choice.
WALKER - Edna (nee Fisher)1920-2011 Edna slipped peacefully away on March 6th after a brief illness. Predeceased by her husband Ivan in 1986 and her brother Tom in 2008. Lovingly missed by her stepdaughter Maureen and her stepson Dennis, her sister-in-law Phyllis Fisher, her many nieces and nephews and their families, and her good friend and neighbour, Ken. Edna was born in Rossport, Ontario. Her father, John Fisher, was a telegrapher and the family moved frequently for his job. Edna also became a telegrapher and moved to Vancouver where she met her husband, Ivan. After marriage Edna worked at Canada Mortgage and Housing where she stayed for 30 years until retirement in 1984. In her retirement years Edna was very active in senior activities on the North Shore as well as the C.P.R. Pioneers Assn. and the C.M.&H.C. retirement group. Edna was well liked, independent, and on the go every day until the week before her death. She recently turned 91 on February 19, an event which was celebrated by all her friends and family. She will be sorely missed. There will be a memorial service at First Memorial Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, BC. on March 19th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation or S.P.C.A. would be appreciated. FAULKNER - J. Robert (Bob) Jan 19, 1926 - March 8, 2011 Bob passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the North Shore Hospice eight years to the day after his beloved wife Gussie died. The North Shore mountains were their extended back yard, and they loved exploring them. Always an inquisitive participant in life, Bob was able to reinvent himself after Gussie’s death. He became active in both the West Van Senior’s Choir and the North Shore Chorus, and revisited the finer points of bridge on Monday nights at Parkgate Rec Centre. He continued to pursue his love of theatre, music and world travel, and was often seen on the dance floor practicing his finest ballroom techniques with his good friend Audrey. Bob is predeceased by his granddaughters Kaitlin (1993) and Claire Atkinson (2003), his wife Gussie in 2003, and his daughter Joan Atkinson in December 2009. He is survived by his sister Betty Downing, son Brian (Francoise), and daughters Kathy Costello (Al), and Gail Faulkner (Jeff), grand children Michael Costello (Sebrina), Chloe´ Faulkner and Emily Atkinson. He also had time to enjoy his great granddaughter Jaianna Costello. Bob was born and raised in Vancouver and had lived in North Vancouver since 1954. He served in the RCAF in England in WWII, then enrolled in UBC where he met and married Gussie. He retired in 1986 after a career in the Public Service. After retirement he enrolled in Community History courses at SFU where he catalogued every building permit in the City of North Vancouver. He was presented a Heritage Award from the City for this work. His travels led him to almost every continent, and he was always happy to visit his children wherever they found themselves. A memorial service will be held at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver on Wednesday March 16 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, North Shore Hospice; or to a charity of your choice.

Lois Smith with Kevin O’Leary
REGISTER: www.bchrma.org/kevin Wednesday, April 13 4:30pm to 6:00pm Vancouver Convention Centre East
I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who shared in the loss of our beloved Lois. Your comforting words of support and beautiful sympathy cards helped to ease the initial grief. We were able to keep Lois in her own home throughout her lengthy illness with the help of a home care provider. Our first attempt at finding someone to provide this care proved to be quite expensive. However, the second search proved Golden ... Watching Joanie MacDonald and her staff from Home Sweet Home Care restored by faith in humanity. They were much more affordable and worth their weight in gold. It brought me peace of mind to see Lois treated with the utmost respect, dignity, compassion and love. Joanie arranged for the necessary equipment required to meet Lois’s specific comfort and needs, making her final days a little more pleasant. She and her team worked tirelessly, providing 24 hour home care, often doing things above and beyond the call of duty. This allowed Lois to stay in her home sweet home until the end.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: This isn’t the easiest week. There aren’t any disasters (unless you’re impetuous Sunday or late week, Saturday). You’re just rowing against the wind in career, communications, media, travel, work and health zones. Plod onward, and get plenty of rest. Watch what you say or write Sunday and Friday/Saturday. Home’s no picnic Sunday and early Monday, but Monday p.m. into Tuesday noon brings a gratifying sense of emotional security and friendship. Contemplate romance midweek. Tackle chores (safely) Thursday onward. A brand new world of hope and friendship lies ahead! Taurus April 20-May 20: One more week of happiness, optimism, flirting, new plans, life’s vigour, friendships and entertainment! It won’t be a totally smooth time, though. Sunday contains some communications foul-ups (beware gossip, secret acts, especially regarding a partner) after which you feel gloom Monday morning. But all’s smooth after this, especially in shopping and earning, Tuesday/ Wednesday. Romance, gambling urges and creative surges arrive Thursday noon to Saturday noon -- but you might have to choose between “two attractions” or two actions. A chore you didn’t do nags at you. Gemini May 21-June 20: Plug away at career, ambition, prestige or authority-related chores. (If something in this arena began in 2010 or last January, it’s still a winner.) Be careful with money – make a major purchase, seek a pay raise or deal with important clients after midday Monday, not before (nor Sunday). Short trips, communications, paperwork, casual friendships and errands go well midweek. But someone’s evasive or deceptive around noon Thursday. All week, your hopes might struggle against a financial, romantic, age or health barrier. Try this: conform to the barrier; make it an aid.
Apartments & Condos
Cancer June 21-July 22: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness rise high Sunday to Tuesday, giving you the ability to cope with some major obstacles or problems that have existed for two or three years. Your luck, karma and self-image hit the lowest spot in two decades over the last year and a half. Now you’re beginning the long climb upward, back to the sunshine. Things turn Monday about noon – relationships, finances, security and intimacy take on a comfortable, healthy glow! Your money and career luck climb midweek. But you hit a familiar relationship drag Friday/Saturday: being light, friendly cures it. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Lie low, rest and contemplate Sunday to Tuesday noon. Don’t tempt fate. Tuesday afternoon might start with a rush, a sudden friendship, a brilliant idea, or merely a wee uplift – in whatever way, a small signal comes that the next eight years are going to be different – you are stepping into a zone of increased awareness and intellectual acuity, of increased and smoother love, more travel, more learning; and if single, you will very likely marry. Life is fresh, mysteries flee (well, soon)! Expect attention all midweek. Chase money but beware spending, Friday/Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Be wary of investments, large financial undertakings, intimacy and any “private co-operation” Sunday – and all week. These are ethically OK Monday, but they still won’t yield practical profit. Work is reliable, though: you’re paid honestly, fairly. Relationships face some bumps, but you remain buoyant, and end happily. Retire for some rest and contemplation Tuesday noon to Thursday noon. Contacts with institutions, government or “head office” go well. Reconnect with spiritual realms. Your energy and charisma leap upward Thursday eve onward, but co-operation’s essential.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Your last week of work, drudgery and health concerns. Next week brings a month of fresh opportunities and excitement! For now, tackle chores so you’ll be free to chase those opportunities – some of which could involve love. Ambition, career and prestige relationships draw you Sunday to Tuesday noon. Co-operation will be lacking until Monday noon, so plan your most important moves for that p.m. Hopes, optimism, friendship and light flirtation play around you Tuesday to Thursday – one of the most exciting relationship periods of your life is starting! Retreat, rest Friday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You’re in a romantic, creative, beauty-aware time, and Sunday to Tuesday bring a mellow, understanding mood. Good – you’ll need all the understanding you can muster Sunday through noon Monday, when various obstacles try your patience, especially in the work arena. By noon this trend switches 180 degrees to success, and romance has a better than even chance, right into pre-dawn Tuesday. Your ambitions get a splendid opportunity Tuesday eve to early Thursday (unless you worry about security) – take the chance, early (Tuesday best). Optimism, happiness, popularity late week! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The accent remains on home, children, security, real estate, nature, stomach, soul and nurturing, for one more week. It isn’t the easiest week – romance and pleasure can’t seem to escape the realities of money and earnings. They’re intertwined, through late 2012. On the plus side, the same period (18 months) blesses you in emotional, serene, moral ways – you’ll feel good, right. (And you’ll be oddly protected from any disasters.) But don’t seek intimacy, sex nor investments Sunday. Gentle love, understanding and travel ideas enter mid-week. Be ambitious Thursday eve, Friday.

Mar. 13 - Mar. 19 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Communications, paperwork, details, errands, casual friends, short trips and curiosity fill this week and next. In the slowest, most gradual way, like water on blotting paper, this area of your life will grow for the next 15 years. At the same time (perhaps illogically) your worries about money and income will fade. You enter eight years of “home excitement” this week. This can have a negative effect, bringing more stress to the home (so relax, exercise, guard digestion) and a positive one: money made from property, food/shelter areas. A big new life! Midweek joy, romance. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to chase money, but cautiously. This entire week, romance, gambling, sex, investments, lifestyle changes, secrets and “detective work” need to be handled carefully – or better yet, left alone, especially Sunday and Thursday onward.Tackle chores Sunday to Tuesday noon – follow safety rules Sunday/Monday. You glow with a certain sweet light all March, which can attract romantic attention. Tuesday afternoon to Thursday noon could provide some relationship excitement! Be diplomatic but eager these days. Secrets, “darker urges” arise Thursday/Friday – be honest, clean, safe. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness continue to put you on top. But this week has a couple of barriers which irk you a bit. They involve a partner, and/or your home situation, and/or money. (In all cases, money.) Ah, well, everything that has a compromise, has a solution. Sunday to Tuesday heightens your romantic, pleasure and beauty sensors. A creative surge arrives! (It’s better, easier, Monday p.m. onward.) Tackle chores midweek – you’ll do them swiftly, successfully. Good health news! Relationships present challenges Thursday to Saturday: be diplomatic, loving. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

ATTENTION WEST VAN HOME OWNERS Did you receive your letter yet?
- Enclosed with the letter you are told you have to pay a levy for having an oil tank on your property.
