Minister says proposed ferry fares are too high Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
LOCAL ferry commuters are hoping the provincial government will find a way to keep ferry fares affordable after B.C. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom said Thursday he thinks proposed increases are too high. “It’s a positive sign he thinks the fares are getting too high,” said Alison Morse, a Bowen Island municipal councillor and representative of ferry users there. But she said the key question is whether the province will increase its ferry subsidy to bring fares down — without cutting service. Ferry travellers could see annual fare hikes ranging from four per cent on major routes — like the ones between West Vancouver and Nanaimo and the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale — and more than eight per cent on minor routes such as the sailing to Bowen Island. Those increases would work out to total increases of almost 18 per cent and more than 37 per cent over the next four years, after they are compounded. Ferry commissioner Martin Crilly released the numbers Thursday in a preliminary decision that sets the maximum ferry fare increases over the next four years. See NDP page 5

NV police volunteers protest closures

VOLUNTEERS with the North Vancouver RCMP’s community policing program say a recent decision to close two of their offices will compromise public safety. In a letter sent to the North Shore News by about 30 members of the organization, the group claimed that the closure of the community policing centre at Edgemont Village in January and the more recent shuttering of the office in Lynn Valley last month have hamstrung many of their programs, which aim to reduce crime, curb

speeding, improve child safety and address other issues. The district has consolidated the two neighbourhood outlets into a single space at district hall on West Queens Road. That simply isn’t good enough, according to the group. “A lot of the people are very upset,” said George Wilkinson, a community policing volunteer who heads a committee formed by the organization to protest the change. “They were asked to return the keys to the policing centres, and that’s where it stands. . . . “How do you do your duties from a cubicle?”
The centres performed a variety of valuable functions, said Wilkinson. Last year, volunteers in the City and District of North Vancouver entered 10,000 children in their Child ID Program database, plastered 40,000 vehicles with notices aimed at curbing smash and grabs, urged more than 100,000 motorists to reduce their speed through the group’s Speed Watch program, helped clean up 600 incidents of graffiti and performed other functions, he said. The volunteers co-ordinated their efforts at those offices and used them to store equipment, said Wilkinson. Meanwhile, the centres also served as a contact point between law enforcement and the community at large, he added. People who

Drag monster created by accident Underdog NV team wins Winternationals Ashley MacDonald

ROB Harrison and his team of mad mechanics in North Vancouver have created a monster — a blindingly fast monster that breaks drag racing speed records. His name is Igor, and he’s the crazy invention of Harrison and his team at Harrison Lougheed Racing, the first Canadian team to win the National Hot Rod Association’s Winternationals drag racing competition in the competition eliminator category. It’s the Daytona 500 of drag racing and its winners are presented with a trophy called a Wally. Igor was born out of several terrifying and incredibly loud explosions. Harrison and his team, made up of his racing partner Al Lougheed and a crew of dedicated mechanics, were convinced they could figure out how to make an inline eight-cylinder engine NEWS photos Mike Wakefield that generated huge power. Council Expands Secondary Suites Program Legalizing secondary suites is a key recommendation of the Community Dialogue on Housing and Neighbourhood Character. Council has supported the secondary suite program to meet the community’s interest in greater housing options and to assist homeowners with the requirements necessary to register existing suites. On March 21, Council voted to expand the secondary suite program to allow for secondary suites in non-owner occupied homes. This change to the program was made to recognize the unique characteristics of West Vancouver’s housing supply. Many of the existing secondary suites in non-owner occupied homes have existed in West Vancouver for decades. Important Date – May 31, 2011 Since the beginning of the secondary suites program, the District has developed incentives to encourage owners to register the suites with the District. The goal of the District’s
registration program is to ensure the health and safety of both the resident of the suite and the principal dwelling by verifying that certain minimum life safety standards are achieved. Incentives that have been offered thus far included a reduced application fee for those who applied to register their suite by September 30, 2010. An additional incentive for early registration is the application of alternative life safety standards to existing suites. To qualify for this incentive, secondary suites must have an application filed with the District before May 31, 2011. For those who apply to register their suite after that date, the suite will need to comply with the full BC Building Code, which could result in significant expense. Non-registered secondary suites will be in in violation of the zoning bylaw, which may result in warnings, fines or other enforcement measures. Celebrate Our Volunteers April 10 to 16 Every year, at this time, we recognize the thousands of volunteers in West Vancouver, and with good reason. So much of what happens in our community would not be possible without them. They serve on committees, help out at the museum, library, and Ferry Building Gallery. They play a significant role at the Seniors’ Centre, the Community Centres, and special events like Community Day and Harmony Arts Festival. They serve on committees and working groups, Emergency Social Services, and North Shore Search and Rescue, and many other not-forprofit organizations. No matter what their role, they all have one thing in common – they care about and contribute to our community.

NDP calls for fare freeze
From page 1
The province has until June 30 to respond. Although the fare hikes set by Crilly were lower than those requested by B.C. Ferries, Lekstrom said Thursday, “It is still too high in my mind and we have to take a good look at this.” Lekstrom said people who rely on the ferries “can’t sustain these kinds of increases” and vowed to review the issue. But he stopped short of promising an increase to the annual ferry subsidy — currently $125 million annually — saying it was too early to decide that. Morse said even though the fare hikes are lower than those proposed by the ferry corporation, they still come on top of a series of increases that have driven fares sky high since the ferry system was privatized eight years ago. Back then, it was promised that any fare hikes would be “modest and predictable,” she said. “I guess they’ve been predictable. I don’t think anyone could consider them modest.”
Since 2003, round trip fares for an adult and vehicle leaving Horseshoe Bay have jumped to more than $58 from $37 for a trip to Langdale, and to more than $39 from $25 on the Bowen Island route. The latest fare hikes went into effect on Friday. The increases are already having a significant impact on communities like Bowen Island and the Sunshine Coast, where many people regularly commute by ferry through Horseshoe Bay to work, said Morse. According to a recent study on Bowen, about 45 per cent of the people who work commute into Vancouver, she said. NDP ferries critic Gary Coons also weighed in on the proposed fare hikes Friday, calling them “outrageous.” “I agree with the minister. These proposed increases are too high,” he said. “The public can’t sustain them.” Coons called for a freeze on further fare hikes and a full review of ferry privatization. “B.C. Ferries is part of our public transportation network and needs to be funded as such,” he said.
RCMP say district will save $300,000

didn’t want to go all the way to the RCMP detachment, or who felt uncomfortable at police stations, could report suspicious activity and get information there, said Wilkinson. A number of volunteers have already left the organization in response to the move, he said. But the North Vancouver RCMP defended the change as necessary in light of budget constraints, and potentially even beneficial. The closure of the Edgemont and Lynn Valley offices will save the District of North Vancouver about $300,000 a year, said Cpl. Peter DeVries, a spokesman for the detachment. And all the major functions performed by the volunteers will be possible from the central base — which, he added, is not a cubicle. “We don’t really need four walls and a roof to deliver these

services,” he said. “We may even be enhancing service delivery by the way we’re rolling it out.” The change was not made without consultation, said DeVries. Starting last summer, the force launched a review of community policing, hiring an outside consultant to examine every facet of the program and interview stakeholders, including many of the volunteers themselves, as to what was working, what wasn’t, and where improvements could be made. “We’ve really made a Herculean effort to consult,” he said. The Edgemont office received an average of just seven walk-ins a day, and the Lynn Valley office 15, a number that simply didn’t justify the cost, said DeVries. The role they played in providing a contact point will be filled to some degree by new foot patrols, similar to those begun recently in Lower Lonsdale, he added, which will be rolled out in those and other neighbourhoods this summer.

Whistler owes Saxtons $1.3M
Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
THE family of North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton has won a court battle forcing the Resort Municipality of Whistler to pay them $1.3 million for a property it expropriated from the family 34 years ago.
The lengthy lawsuit involved a valuation of 108 acres of lakefront property next to Whistler’s Alta Lake, expropriated by the municipality from Rainbow Country Estates — a company owned by the Saxton family — in 1987. The property is now the site of Rainbow Park, a public park including 1,000 feet of sandy beach. The Saxtons were originally handed the award by a B.C. Supreme Court justice in March of last year. Whistler planned to appeal the decision, but didn’t file the required paperwork by a court deadline, despite repeated requests. On March 31, the B.C. Court of Appeal granted the family’s request to dismiss the appeal, noting the family matriarch Joan Saxton was in frail health. The $1.3 million represents the value of the property in 1987.

Party killer
P
RIME Minister Stephen Harper announced this week that if his party forms a majority government following May’s federal election, he will quickly take steps to undermine democracy. Harper made his plan clear in comments to a news conference in New Brunswick Friday when he committed to end per-vote subsidies to political parties. What the Prime Minister means is that he would like to repeal some of the world’s most progressive electionfinancing legislation and replace it, presumably, with a system more akin to that in the United States, which ensures wealthy individuals and organizations have a disproportionate influence on lawmakers. Currently, Canada’s regulations impose strict caps on the amount

of money candidates can spend on election campaigns, and restricts donations from members of the public to modest sums, and ban donations of any kind from corporations and trade unions. The bulk of any given candidate’s campaign money comes from the public purse, in the form of a $2 subsidy for every vote their party garnered in the previous election times the number of years that have passed since. The effect is that it is more in the interests of a candidate to curry favour from voters than to do so from big business or labour. That will change if Harper is given an opportunity to put his plan into action. It is an idea with huge benefits for private interests and the parties that favour them, and absolutely nothing for ordinary Canadians.

Hawaiian trip no doggone fun
Dear Editor: Like many families, the Schandors flew south for spring break, secure in the knowledge that their beloved dog was being well cared for. But while they were in Hawaii, they received the call that Hurley was missing. Trapped in paradise, Tracie Schandor reactivated her Facebook profile and crafted and urgent message for family and friends. Unable to get home for two more days, they were forced to watch helplessly as the search for Hurley commenced. The ground search for Hurley began on March 24; fliers were made and distributed, and a community was called to action. By the time the Schandors returned to North Vancouver, their network of friends had been hard at work: every trailhead had a poster of Hurley, a reward had been raised and the word was spreading fast. It is now Friday, and Hurley is still not home. As the kids are back in school, and parents are back at work, it is harder to mobilize people to hit the trails during the day. Hurley is an 18-month-old Bernese mountain dog. He weighed 125 pounds when he went missing and is probably a little less by now. He has a big bark, but a friendly nature, and is a little people-shy. The best bet, if you see him, is to sit on the ground,

Stuttering story reads like advertising Dear Editor: Thankfully, periods of non-fluency are rare for me now, but I was left speechless by your March 27 story, Finding Their Voices. I’m sorry, but it read like an infomercial for Wendy Duke’s practice; the pitch for her Columbia Speech Service was about as subtle as guy in
checkerboard slacks, white shoes and a pink tie. What that did was dissipate the great intentions behind the piece. I cringe, but can tolerate when your paper puts a sales pitch in every auto review; but this, I couldn’t stay shut up about. Rick Lawrie North Vancouver
Radiation dangers downplayed
Dear Editor: I am disgusted with the mass media for the “comforting” of North Americans regarding the nuclear catastrophe in Japan (Viewpoint, Sour Pill, March 20). The radiation poses no risk to us? How do we know this? The type, amount and concentration of the most toxic materials known to man are being released into the atmosphere and the arrogant humans think they know what is safe. The downplay or outright dismissal of the risks are easy to understand. The nuclear industry is just getting started after previous PR setbacks and any bad press will not be tolerated. I thought the North Shore News editors might have had a more humanist approach in their Viewpoint. Instead, more patronizing rubbish. Robert Partridge North Vancouver

Kate Zimmerman until we’re good and ready. The miracle of call display means “unavailable name and number” always meets “unavailable response” chez moi. As somebody who works at home, I’m a sitting duck for every service provider and charity with a gimmick or a cause to sell. Once I read who’s on the other end of the line, I’ll answer the calls of people I know — if it’s convenient. Otherwise, I’ll get back to them when I’m not tied up on Facebook. The arrogance of it! Yet I am unrepentant. And, obviously, so is everybody else. I’m not the only one who chooses to respond to a work-related message on my telephone with a conversationavoiding email; according to Paul, that’s the norm. Like me, everybody is reserving their emotional energy and true personality for some later time of their own choosing, or, perhaps, never. How strange this is. What brought it on? My cousin,
long-distance call. It was wonderful hearing her husky voice, remembering how talented she has always been, and realizing that she still has her magnificent joie de vivre. I think it made us both want to see each other again much more than emails would, no matter how generously we larded them with exclamation points and emoticons. Ordinarily, however, my gregarious husband — who gives great phone call — describes me as a “bridge troll” because of my predilection for hiding out from society. With telephoning friends now officially out of style continent-wide, it sounds to me like my disease has caught on. It’s probably time for mass bridge-troll rehab, a place where we, the standoffish, will only gain our release the day we voluntarily memorize a telephone number, then place that first, traumatic call “just to say ‘Hi.’” Join us, won’t you? In a recent story by Pamela Paul called Don’t Call Me, I Won’t Call You, it said that we’ve all given up on the telephone in favour of texts and emails. “Phone calls are rude. Intrusive. Awkward,” wrote Paul. The inimitable Judith Martin, better known as etiquette columnist Miss Manners, agreed with her. Ringing telephones interrupt people and force them to drop what they’re doing, she told Paul. Apparently it’s cocky for the caller to expect this kind of attention — so few of us deserve it. I suppose I could use low self-esteem as my excuse for rarely using the phone. For me, the thought of picking up a receiver and punching in the digits to pester anybody but my husband or children is so revolting that only absolute necessity can circumvent it. It seems I’m not alone in this — something cold clamps around our psyches and we must virtually wrestle this anaconda of antipathy to the ground before we can look up a telephone number and proceed. But the fact that we must look it up at all is proof that something is amiss beyond mere insecurity. Where once upon a time most of us would have had at least 25 numbers lodged in our brains because we called them routinely, now many of us memorize only our own home phone and immediate family’s cellphone numbers. The rest have to be stored somewhere, usually in some kind of a speed-dialer. I have dutifully recorded the contact information of dear friends of 30 years’ standing, countless relatives, and pals I correspond with every day over the Internet in case I ever feel the need to get verbally in touch. I don’t. Likewise, if our home phone rings, few of us answer
an actor, in her tribute to my mother at her memorial, chose to do a stellar imitation of her on the phone — Mum’s infectious enthusiasm and the heartfelt way she would respond to interesting news with “Rea-lly?! How terrific!” It was an uncanny representation of a treasured aspect of my mother’s personality. It reminded me that as a little kid, I would imitate her on my toy phone, throwing every iota of my being into that imaginary dialogue. I craved whatever fun Mum seemed to be having. Maybe I got out of the habit of calling people because I couldn’t meet that standard of excellence. A good telephone call is a bit of a performance, an attempt at hospitality made from a distance. It’s no place to be aloof or prickly. Rather, it calls for good cheer, an empathetic spirit, and, of course, active listening. To my mind, anyway, you shouldn’t phone a friend to blather on about the minor problems in your day. You’re there to engage with and buoy your invisible companion, just as he or she ought to lift your spirits. That requires both of you to make an effort. Andy Warhol once called the telephone “the most intimate and exclusive of all media.” If so, why have we given up that closeness in favour of curt texts and charmless emails? I recently reconnected with an old friend, a singer, in an extended

North Van girl aims to protect B.C. waters Tessa Holloway tholloway@nsnews.com
A 10-year-old North Vancouver girl is hoping her voice is the key to raising awareness about the threat of oil spills on the North Coast of B.C. Ta’Kaiya Blaney recorded a song she wrote last year with the help of her music teacher, which describes the coastal waters of British Columbia and her vision of what they might look like after a spill. The song, titled “Shallow Waters,” is in response to a proposal by Enbridge, an oil and gas company, to build a twin-pipeline to carry crude oil from the oil sands of Alberta to Kitimat on the coast of British Columbia, where supertankers will carry it to Asian markets. Condensate, a dilutant used in oil sands production, would be carried to Alberta. With the backing of Greenpeace, Ta’Kaiya released the song with a music video and plea to MPs and businesses that she doesn’t want to see TV images of an oil spill in B.C. like she saw after last year’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill. “It’s sad, because there’s a lot of people and animals there, and there’s people who are getting sick because of fumes and animals that were dying because of it,” said Ta’Kaiya, with her mother, Anne Blaney, by her side. “It’s called a risk, so there’s a good side and a bad side, but the bad side is bigger.” One of those animals is the sea otter — her favourite animal, she said — and it’s that concern
that inspired her to write the song. Ta’Kaiya is a member of the Sliammon First Nation, and the video mixes scenes of nature with her in traditional dress with shots around Vancouver and of pollution from various oil spills. The family hired a videographer to do the video, while Ta’Kaiya emailed Greenpeace to ask for help with distribution. It was released March 24, on the 22nd anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska and before the House of Commons was set to vote on a private member’s bill, now dead due to the election call, that would have banned oil tankers in northern B.C. waters. Ta’Kaiya led the way throughout the project, said her mother. “I’ve always tried to support her to have a voice and stand up for what she believes in,” said Anne. “She researched this and wanted to do something to make a difference.” Ta’Kaiya and Greenpeace sent her letter to the offices at Enbridge and also attempted to handdeliver a letter and DVD to the Enbridge offices in Vancouver, but the company wasn’t exactly humming her tune. When she was told she couldn’t visit their sixth-floor office, she pulled out coloured cards and began a prepared speech in the lobby, but halfway through security demanded they leave, said her mom. Paul Stanway, a spokesman for Enbridge, said executives at the company had seen the letter and video and planned to respond. He said they weren’t informed that Ta’Kaiya was planning to deliver the video that day and so staff weren’t prepared to accept it. “We want to be respectful to the young lady’s See Enbridge page 10

point of view,” he said. He said security staff at the building were alarmed by the presence of Greenpeace, as activists with the group had previously chained themselves to a door in the Enbridge office during a protest. He admitted there will always be risk of a spill, whether in the pipeline or the oil tankers. Last summer, an Enbridge pipeline ruptured in
Michigan, releasing one million gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River. However, Stanway said the company is using the best available safety and environmental practices. “Risks are a part of everyday life. Our goal is to minimize them so they are not a significant factor and be prepared for any eventuality,” he said. Ta’Kaiya’s video is online at www. takaiyablaney.com.

Cap U hopes for waterfront campus

CAPILANO University has its eyes set on another home in the City of North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale area — and city councillors seem ready to share that vision. “It’s what we always wanted at that site,” said Coun. Craig Keating during Monday’s council meeting. “I can’t think of a better option than having an educational institution like Capilano University there.” The proposal for another Capilano campus location has come forward as the city considers its Lower Lonsdale pier development site plan. The university is looking to lease roughly 10,000 square feet on the waterfront to build another campus site. According to Capilano president Kris Bulcroft, the new location would provide “an enhanced environment for community-based learning.”
Inherpresentationtocouncil,CindyTurner,Capilano’sdirector of continuing education, outlined the university’s ambitious plans for the waterfront location, including a “multifunctional” space for fine art, music and continuing education programs. Turner said that Capilano staff is considering partnerships with the City of North Vancouver and community organizations to help fund and maintain a waterfront campus. But with funding still in question and planning still in the early stages, councillors are waiting for further details before throwing their full support behind the project. Mayor Darrell Mussatto thanked Capilano University for their interest in a Lonsdale location and expressed enthusiasm in seeing the project move forward. “I think it’s a great opportunity here for a win-win situation for the residents and for the university,” Mussatto said. “I’m excited about it.” Capilano’s proposal has been turned over to city staff and will return to council for further consideration.

Pippa Hawley is the residency program director for the University of British Columbia division of palliative care, seeing her responsible for training residents to be palliative care physicians. As well, she works at the B.C. Cancer Agency as leader of the pain and symptom management team. To spread her message of getting the most out of life, as well as raise funds for supportive and palliative care research at the agency, she’s organized the Vancouver Bucket List Festival. Set for Saturday, April 9 at the B.C. Cancer Research Centre in Vancouver, the public forum will feature a variety of presentations focused on quality of life, with ample opportunities for those in attendance to engage directly with experts. Joining Hawley in presenting the Vancouver Bucket List Festival are members of Team Ride to the Very End — a group of primarily doctors and nurses involved with end-of-life care, and pain and symptom management — set to participate in the upcoming Ride to Conquer Cancer benefitting B.C. Cancer Foundation. Hawley, who’s the team’s leader, says riders can decide where their money goes and Ride to the Very End has designated research in supportive and palliative care as its beneficiary. The festival is designed to provide information to patients living with a life-threatening illness as well as their families and caregivers. “A ‘bucket list’ is a list of things you want to do before you die,” says Hawley. To that end, it will feature a number of short presentations on topics including: cruising, taking into account the potential need for medical care and obtaining insurance; state-of-the-art symptom management; advanced care planning; community care options, i.e. hospice and palliative care units, and home care; living wakes; and legacy projects. “It’s to try to give people a little bit of an idea of how to prepare well, so that when you actually die, things have been as well-addressed as they possibly

Attendees will be eligible for a number of door prizes, including a ride on a Harley Davidson and a weekend in Whistler. While the topic is heavy, the Vancouver Bucket

products. They produce a line appropriately called Natural Beauty Skincare® that is 100% natural and delivers fantastic results.
People have become concerned about what their skin is absorbing from beauty products. For over 10 years Nature’s Creations has been committed to educating consumers on the hazards of toxic synthetic ingredients in skin care products. “It’s very serious, and women are starting to take it seriously” says Suzanne LaurinSeale of Nature’s Creations Aromatherapy and Natural Day Spa. “The average North American woman exposes herself to over 200 synthetic toxic chemicals a day.”
Within weeks, clients comment on how radiant their skin becomes and say their friends notice it too.
Buyer Beware. Many companies have jumped on the “natural” band wagon promoting purity. However, to call a product natural it only has to legally contain 10% natural ingredients. Read labels and ask questions. Nature’s Creations is chocka-block full of 100% natural

Staying connected
The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to keeping its members connected – face to face. Before email, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce model has, and continues to be, the original form of Social Networking. By definition: so•cial (soh-shuhl) net•work•ing (net-wur-king) is the practice of expanding the number of one’s business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals.
that the Social Networking opportunities at The North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce events generate more business leads than any Tweet Up or Facebook Update!
Upcoming young entrepreneurs, home based business owners, and all businesses of the community should know
Today, face to face business networking continues to flourish throughout many business communities

and the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce is the first place you want to visit and join if you plan to be successful in a particular community. The biggest challenge for most new members will be time management and making a conscience effort to get out of the office and out from behind that computer monitor. Once there, members will have an excellent opportunity to put a face to their company and a chance to share their passion for what they do with other like-minded entrepreneurs.

...eye contact, hand shaking and exchanging of business cards is the simple formula to success here. As a new member, you must remember the fundamentals of networking: most people you meet may not
want or even need your company’s services, but in this environment, how they can assist you is by recommending you or your company to people who do. For us at The Great Canadian Landscaping Company, a third party recommendation or personal lead is far superior to cold calls. With a personal recommendation, trust is instilled even before first contact made, with a personal lead, the ice can be broken quicker, and both scenarios result in new business quicker. This is the Chamber concept at its best and how long standing
relationships are formed in our community. We are so passionate about the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce; we believe our success is tied directly to our strategic partnership. Jason Black Vice President – Operations The Great Canadian Landscaping Company

York and the Nu-Yorkers rock the room Band’s weekly gig at Eagles Club’s Starlight Room a hit
BOB York didn’t plan to become a musician. He wanted to be an archeologist. Seniors all over the Lower Mainland can thank Bob’s mother for deflecting him from that career path after finding stashes of bones and skulls. Even so, the road to music was a winding one. Born in 1943, Bob was raised by his grandmother and his mother, Lillian, their Chinese name anglicized to York. Despite a close encounter with a piano lid that nearly ended his musical career before it had even begun, Lillian recognized his interest. On wages of 10 cents an hour earned by waitressing, she purchased a piano and lessons for herself and for her son. Bob played classical music until rock ’n’ roll entered his life in 1954. “I traded Horowitz for Jerry Lee Lewis,” recalls Bob. By then, Lillian had purchased a house on Victoria Drive where she and her second husband, Gordon Sam, provided him with three brothers and two sisters. “Living on the Drive, I learned Italian music from playing at weddings and neighbourhood restaurants on weekends,” says Bob. “I fell in love with movie music, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and
Memory Lane
Laura Anderson the MGM musicals, with the great composers of Tin Pan Alley.” Bob graduated from the Vancouver School of Art and got a job in the graphics department of CHAN-TV, now Global TV. Colour television did not exist back then, nor did the station have a music department until Bob began composing music for the news hour and for “bumps,” the station’s lead in to commercials. “I was the music department,” he laughs. Throughout his career in television and after he retired in 1992, Bob played piano all over the city. He was a regular at Rossini’s in Gastown until 2003, when he graduated to Linton Garner’s seat on the piano bench at Rossini’s in Kitsilano, following Garner’s death. On a day about 10 years ago, Bob’s musical journey took another turn. It began when he sat down at the piano in the lounge at North Vancouver’s Evergreen House to play a few tunes. The response
encouraged him to work up a solo act, performing show tunes and popular music interspersed with movie and music history to take on the road to seniors’ residences throughout the Lower Mainland. Soon after, Bob crossed paths with singer Kay Donson. They had known each other for years through the local music scene but learned they lived around the corner from each other in North Vancouver. Donson’s group, the Breakaways, had just lost their pianist. “How lucky could we be to get a piano player like Bob who is so in demand,” recalls Donson. “He’s an absolute genius when it comes to music and can play anything.” Singers Donson, Bob Wall and Fred Axam of the Breakaways reformed into Bob York and the Nu-Yorkers and have a busy schedule of performances at seniors’ residences around the Lower Mainland. Last fall, they were invited to play at a very different venue — the Starlight Room at the Eagles Club in North Vancouver. Manager Chris Bradley has established the recently renovated club as a local gathering place and venue for local bands. On Tuesday, people dance to the music of their time, or simply listen to great music, well-played, in a comfortable social setting. Tuesdays in the Starlight Room “is open mic night,” says Donson. “We never know who will show up to play. Musicians who want to join in are welcome. Our regulars

WORK
Be aware of non-taxable employment benefits EMPLOYEES tend to miss out on most of the tax deductions selfemployed individuals can claim.
So if you are an employee, you should know about the more than two dozen nontaxable employment benefits. “If you have an employment benefit package, Money Matters try to have any cost-sharing allocated so your employer pays Mike Grenby for all the non-taxable benefits and you pay for the benefits that are taxable if your employer pays them,” advises KPMG, the international firm of chartered accountants, in its book, Tax Planning for You and Your Family 2011. “In many cases, without changing the cost to your employer, you can reduce your tax burden.”
Try to negotiate employer-paid, non-taxable employee benefits, which are worth more than (fully taxable) salary. Such benefits include: ■ Registered pension, group sickness and accident, private health services, supplementary unemployment benefit and deferred profitsharing plans. ■ Scholarships provided to your children for post-secondary education; subsidized school services for your children (e.g. provided in a remote area). ■ Non-cash gifts to an unrelated employee to mark holidays, birthdays and other special occasions up to a total of $500 annually. ■ A separate non-cash gift to mark length of service or an employment anniversary up to $500 a year. ■ Tuition fees for courses to maintain or improve your skills related to your present or future work responsibilities.
■ Uniforms or special clothes you need for your job. ■ Transportation to the job in certain circumstances, if provided directly by the employer. ■ Work-related travel in your municipality or metropolitan area. ■ Transportation/parking if you are blind/disabled due to a mobility impairment. ■ The cost of an attendant to help you at work if you are disabled. “One non-taxable benefit often overlooked is board and lodging at a ‘special work site,’ which need not be far from an established community, as long as your duties are of a temporary nature and you maintain another residence,” KPMG said. Brontë country
Contributing Writer
HAWORTH, ENGLAND — The Yorkshire village where the Brontë children grew up could scarcely seem more charming. Its crooked Main Street, paved by ancient flagstones, climbs a hill overlooking the broad Worth Valley. The humble buildings crowding its sidewalks are largely what Charlotte, Emily, Anne and brother Branwell would have passed in the 1830s and ’40s, many built of the local sandstone, called millstone grit. Then, these would have been the homes of weavers and wool combers. Today, they are tea shops and gift boutiques. At the top of the street is the Black Bull Pub and across from it a shop that says “apothecary,” and nearby are two old coaching inns and these, likewise, were all here when the family knew Haworth.
At the Black Bull, a lane to the left leads higher still, to St. Michael and All Angels, the church where the family’s patriarch, the Reverend Patrick Brontë, preached. Next to the church is its small cemetery, shaded and grim in all but the sunniest weather. Beyond its back wall, first glimpsed through tombstones and tree branches, stands the Parsonage, where the Brontë children resided. “Resided” rather than “lived” because although the house kept a roof over their heads, all four siblings spent a great deal of time inhabiting worlds of their own creation. The Parsonage is now the Brontë museum or, really, shrine. Anywhere from 70,000 to over 200,000 people a year visit it, depending on whether modern-day interest in the Brontës is peaking or ebbing. In 2011, with a new Jane Eyre movie out (starring Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska), the numbers are likely to rise. Portions of the Georgian building’s interior are done up as they would have been in the Brontës’ day, most notably the parlour/dining room, where Charlotte’s Jane Eyre,

Four children created a fictional world From page 27
photo John Masters/Horizon Writers’ Group
AT Top Withens, possibly the inspiration for Wuthering Heights, visitors are greeted by two sycamore trees… and quite possibly by two sheep.
Emily’s Wuthering Heights and Anne’s Agnes Gray all were written. The grandfather clock on the stairs to the second floor is the one Patrick Brontë stopped to wind every night on his way to bed. Upstairs, the children’s study, although narrower now due to a subsequent alteration made by Charlotte, is much as it would have been when the children wrote their earliest stories in it. The Brontë juvenilia is remarkable on two counts. From a young age, the four created a fictional world called the Glass Town Confederacy. In it, battles were fought, love was won and lost, treachery vied with nobility and real people interacted with imagined ones. Later, Anne and Emily created Gondal, while Charlotte and Branwell went on telling tales of Glass Town, now called Angria. The adventures were illustrated by their authors, all four of them decent artists. But the drawings were very small, and the words nigh on infinitesimal. They were written on thumb-sized pages and bound neatly into “published” volumes. The Brontës continued to write these books into adulthood. The Parsonage has
several examples of the Angria tales (alas, little survives of Gondal), and a magnifying glass is needed to have even a chance of reading them. Thanks to Gondal and Angria, by the time the three sisters had their first novels published, in 1847, they’d already been writing stories for 20 years. Down the hall from the children’s study is the servant’s room, which recalls the women who cared for the children after their mother died in 1821 (Charlotte was 5, Branwell 4, Emily 3, Anne less than a year). More importantly, it documents the insalubrious living conditions in Haworth in those days. “The sanitary state of the township,” visitors learn, “was appalling. In some instances, one privy was shared by the inhabitants of 24 houses.” One of the coaching inns had a slaughterhouse behind it and offal was dumped into Main Street, the town’s main sewer, to run downhill when it rained along with the rest of the refuse and night soil. In the cemetery, bodies were buried 10 deep. The water leaching through the graveyard, plus that already contaminated by the foul street runoff, entered many of the wells that supplied the town.

MADE of the local sandstone, called millstone grit, this would have been a Haworth weaver’s or a wool comber’s modest home in the 1800s. An 1850 survey of Haworth conducted by an inspector from the General Board of Health in London found that the average life expectancy here was 25.8 years (“which corresponds to some of the most unhealthy of the London districts”), and that 41.6 per cent of babies born didn’t live to be six. When the damning report became public, there should have been a move to fix the sanitary conditions. But, “sadly, the wealthier parishioners, who in most cases had their own water supply, resisted paying an increased rate which would benefit everyone and it was many years before any real improvements were made.” The Brontës had their own two-seater outhouse and a private well, but it wasn’t enough. Branwell, whose life had gone badly astray after a promising start as an artist, spending his days at the Black Bull and buying laudanum from the apothecary across the street, died of tuberculosis in September 1848, aged 31. Emily and Anne followed him to the grave from the same cause, Emily that December, at 30; Anne the following May, at 29. A grieving Charlotte wrote, “a year ago — had a prophet warned me how I should stand in June 1849 — how stripped
and bereaved . . . I should have thought — this can never be endured.” She did endure it, living long enough to marry and see two more novels published, Shirley and Villette. She died in 1855, in the early stages of pregnancy, at 38. The back windows of the Parsonage look out onto the moors. Sombre and forbidding to some, these wind-whipped, stony hills are what Charlotte and Emily, especially, drew their inspiration from. The town and the Parsonage are important Brontë sites, but to understand Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, and their creators, it’s necessary to walk on the moors. The ideal day for it isn’t when it’s unremittingly sunny, but when the weather is, by turns, bright, cloudy, threatening, a windy downpour, and cheerful again. This is the landscape, these are the conditions that were given form by Charlotte and Emily as the tempestuous Rochester and even more elemental Heathcliff. If you go: For more information on the Brontë Parsonage visit www. bronte.info. For more information on Haworth and the moors visit www.haworth-village.org.uk.

TASTE
Bottles across borders: breaking the law Notable Potables Tim Pawsey
THEY’VE taken out the empties (some 30,000!) from the Playhouse Wine Festival, edition No. 33. But you might be surprised to learn that it’s not only about swirlin’, sniffin’, spittin’ ’n’ spittin’.
For the last three years, organizers have convened The Canadian Wine Summit, which brings wine industry players together from across Canada and from around the world to address issues of common interest. This year the topic was perhaps more valid than usual, because it affects all of us, and not just “insiders.” Breaking Down Barriers examined the fact that it’s a crime in Canada for wineries (and individuals like you and me) to ship wine across provincial borders. Yes, that’s right. If you sent Aunt Sally in Halifax a bottle of your favourite B.C. Marechal Foch Pinot Meunier Icewine, you have broken Canadian Federal law — and
could be liable to prosecution and possible jail time. It is, as most agreed, an embarrassment at least — though more a disgrace. And it has serious implications for wineries across the country who increasingly depend on tourism to help build their business (and, therefore, our own Canadian food and wine culture). Ontario’s Charles Pilliterri (who owns Pillitteri Estates Winery) says he doesn’t sell a lot of wine to B.C. — but he does sell to 32 countries, including China and Japan. You know why? Because it’s just way less hassle. The good news? Thanks to this forum (which included some of the best legal minds in the country), there now seems to be some momentum to get things changed. But as a starting point, if you happen to be chatting to any aspiring candidates (or better still, reigning ministers of the crown) during this election campaign, why not ask them when the last time they smuggled wine — and what they’re going to do about their “criminal” behaviour. Much more on this later. And for more info check: www.freemygrapes.ca.
The Nichols toiled long and hard to establish their winery, which produced what many felt at the time to be the best red wine ever to come out of B.C.: Nichol ’94 Syrah (the first to be planted), grown on a hotspot high above the bench, shut down once and for all the mutterings of those who swore B.C. could not and would not ever make drinkable reds — and kick-started an avalanche of
plantings. When Ross Hackworth bought the winery in 2006, he had already worked with the Nichols for a while to gain both a slice of valuable experience and to absorb their philosophy. Five years on, Nichol has once again emerged as a contender, crafting terroir driven — and relatively affordable — premium wines that include a killer ’08 Syrah, among others.
Given the (no doubt) eventual move to subappellations, we like the fact that all Nichol wines now state on their label: “100% Naramata Village Grown.” Evidently, as we like to say, it takes a village to raise the bench. Soft spot or not, our latest tasting reveals the best line-up of wines to date. No time like the present to mark you calendar for the upcoming Naramata Spring
YOUR THIRD TELEVISION GETS AS MUCH ATTENTION AS THE SMALL PRINT BELOW OUR LOGO.
■■■ We’ll confess a soft spot for Nichol Vineyard, the Naramata winery founded by former Vancouver Symphony Orchestra members Kathleen and Alex Nichol (who also penned the first definitive history of a still juvenile B.C. wine industry).

The story of an ancient bond “INSIDE of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all of the time.”
When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, “The one I feed the most.” This is not a parable about my dogs Piper and Zumi fighting, but an old First Nations legend of an elder’s inner struggle between his ego and himself. It is but one of many First

It gave a mighty shudder, And then began to break. A crack began to widen, Between the beasts and man. Some watched the crevasse deepen, But most just turned and ran. Now the dog surveyed the distance, And Man beheld it too. Between them sprang a yearning, A feeling strange and new. Then each one begged the other To make the fateful leap, Yet each one dreaded jumping A crack so wide and deep. So Dog compelled his courage And told Man he would try.
He eyed the fatal distance, For if he failed, he’d die. Then Dog prepared to jump across His courage had decided. That if he could but make the jump, They’d no more be divided. His muscles bunched beneath him; His body left the ground. The wind raced past his muzzle; His heart began to pound. His senses sought the purchase Of land beneath his feet. At last his forepaws met the ground. His mission was complete! NO! His hind feet have slipped and He’s falling off the side! His gallant farewell look said,

“At least, New Friend, I tried.” With disbelieving glance, Man Beheld his falling friend. He wouldn’t let it happen; It couldn’t be the end! Then flesh smote air in searching, And hand met paw and fur. Then Man pulled Dog to safety As heart to heart they were. Man called and Dog responded, And though the gulf was wide, Man gained the loyal canine Forever by his side. Stories, legends or simply old wives tales, dogs have been in our lives for thousands of years and there is no sign of that ever coming to an end. As long as we need to learn, dogs will always be with us as our teachers.

I am a young male 1 yr. old Puggle who needs a secure home with no children. I am quite energetic and weigh about 30 lb. I get along with other dogs but I have not been treated nicely by humans so will need continued training and FLC.
Charlie, who is a speedy English Pointer, approx. 2 yr. old is a smart and wonderful dog. He needs a home where he will get lots of exercise and continued training. Although super energetic outside, he is calm in the house. This is a special dog who is friendly and affectionate. He would be a wonderful companion for an active couple who do not have any kids or cats.
Chiclet is a sweet natured Chi who was very nervous when she arrived at our Rescue but is now ready for a new family who will love her and take her for walks. She enjoys being with other dogs. She has a potential health issue.
One year old female pit bull loves to fetch and hang out with people in an adult only home where she can be the centre of attention..

LINKLATER - Phyllis Marie Sept 14, 1915 – March 25, 2011 Predeceased by her husband Ced, she will be sadly missed by her daughters Lorraine (Jim Kean) and Sharon (Dave Houghton), her grandsons Patrick and Todd and her great grandson Gage. Phyllis and Ced moved to North Vancouver from Willmar, Saskatchewan in 1965 and enjoyed many happy years on the North Shore where they managed The Old Colony Apartments and Phyllis worked at Lions Gate Hospital and made many friends. No service by request.
With his wife Jessie and only daughter Debbie, he moved to BC where he worked for BC Hydro as a distribution engineer until his retirement. George loved to play the violin and spent many happy hours practicing and playing for various amateur orchestras on the North Shore. George enjoyed many years with his son-in-law, Sal Demare and doted on his grandchildren, Dan and Cara, now grown. He was excited to welcome Sheila, Dan’s wife to our family and couldn’t stop smiling when he learned there was a great grandchild on the way. George was a man of great energy, very good health and optimistic disposition. George looked after Jessie for a number of years, without complaint, while she struggled with dementia and predeceased him in 2007. He used these same qualities as he battled pancreatic cancer in the last year of his life and surprised the health professionals and family alike with his ability to rebound and enjoy life. Our family would like to thank Julie Dunn and the Community Care team of nurses, Living Well Home Care and their community health workers, particularly Blanca and Cynthia, and the end-of-life nurse Shirley, for assisting us to take this journey with George at home. The journey was not for the faint of heart but our goal was achieved thanks to the knowledgeable and compassionate care of these health professionals. A special thank you and deepest respect to granddaughter Cara who moved in with George and loved, kissed, hugged, teased and advocated for him in the last 5 months. His last days were full of joy because of her!

“ Death ends a life, not a relationship.” – Jack Lemmon The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground when the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only to be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince.“ When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.” – George Graham Vest - c. 1855

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your energy, charisma and clout reach a yearly high. I didn’t add “effectiveness” because we’re in the middle of a Mercury retro period, a bad time to start anything new (lasting to April 23). Even so, your luck is strongly buoyant, and the “payoff” for past efforts or good deeds could arrive now (or anytime to early June). If you’re single, someone is attracted! Your charisma and energy are doubly strong Sunday/ Monday – “lightning strikes!” Realize that you have to co-operate with a powerful, somewhat sluggish, but perhaps elevated individual. Grab the money Tuesday. A lucky week! Taurus April 20-May 20: Government agencies or “head office” steer your possibilities Sunday/Monday. Go with the flow. New circumstances, new trends are entering your private world – now to 2019. You might soon be working with or attending a large corporation or institution. Don’t be fazed by this – you have the skills required. If stress builds, learn to relax, play golf, yoga, whatever. Fifteen years of career worry ends; 15 years of “wide friendships” begins. Rest, lie low Sunday/Monday. Something lucky brews beneath the surface or behind the scenes before Thursday. Chase money Thursday onward. Gemini May 21-June 20: Wishes come true, especially Sunday, especially old wishes. Romance, or a flirty friendship, or happiness of another sort seems imminent – so does fulfilment around a legal, far travel, international or intellectual matter. But be realistic, cautious also – a “go slow” signal exists. Could mean “watch what you wish for,” or it might hint that wishes are fulfilled, but in a quiet or sober way. Your popularity is rising, friendly romance occurs, new friends come, especially Thursday onward. Optimism soars! (Retreat, rest Monday eve to midweek.) Fifteen years of “true career” begins.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Be ambitious, this week and the next two. You could grab a promotion, or elevate your worth in the eyes of higher-ups (or cultivate a VIP and gain a prestigious new client, contract or business opening, etc.). This week starts with a jolt (of luck or nerves or ambition) Sunday. You’ll have to combine or merge competing situations to succeed – probably a need to reconcile home with career, gain your spouse’s or kids’ co-operation, etc. The potential for success is tremendous, so make every effort! This week begins 15 years of true understanding, spiritual recognition, and, resulting, true love. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: You’ve suffered 15 years of gullibility, deception, disillusionment and suspicion. (On the positive side, 15 years of spiritual awakening.) This week marks the end of that – though such long trends tend to dissolve slowly, now is the turn-around time. Think, contemplate the broad picture, and you should sense some clues to this change. The next 15 years bring a heightened sense of poetic mystery and nuance, sexual longing, deep spiritual intuition and subtle glamour – a better influence! The next eight years also feature mental awareness, and true love – wedded love. Sunday reveals! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sunday’s the centre point of a huge life change. The actual events can have occurred in March, or can happen over the weeks ahead. But they centre on this day, and this week. The events: a financial rearrangement or debt, a sexual lust or liaison, a commitment, a lifestyle change, a health diagnosis or surgery, a piece of detective work or research project. It’s destined to change your life. You’ll have to overcome financial “slowness” or caution. Believe in your luck! Be ambitious late week. Fifteen years of unhealthy relationships end: 15 years of “true relationship” begins.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Start nothing new before April 23. Look to the past or to ongoing ventures, relationships. Your success is inextricably tied to relationships, and/or to opportunities, relocation, litigation, negotiation, fame or the public. Sunday can bring a jolt in these – e.g., love at first sight – but without the infatuation, gooey-eyed stuff – this is alert, exciting, alive, realistic. Downplay your conservative, reluctant, skeptical or cautious side. (If someone says, “You look sad,” it’s a clue to brighten up!) Love “elevates” late week. Your employment picture changes now to 2025. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Something unexpected happens at work this week, especially Sunday. Follow safety procedures, don’t work while tired, be patient, careful with electricity, machines and computers, or avoid them if you can. I’ve emphasized the dangers, but there’s also luck here: you might be called into work because someone didn’t show, or you’re the trouble-shooter in an emergency, etc., which can set you up for praise, promotion now or soon. Be good-natured! Fifteen years of love’s obsessive puzzlement ends; 15 years of love’s good sweetness begins. You’ll believe me, come June/July and 2012! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Sunday could provide a love shock. It’s illuminating. But it will only be lucky if you can balance impulse with caution (without letting caution win) and money or earnings considerations (or possessions) with your need to express yourself, to be yourself. (Sartre said we’re the slave of our possessions.) All that said, this is a hugely lucky week (and month, and quarter) for romance, children, creativity, school, travel, beauty, art and speculation! Opportunities arise Thursday/ Friday. Fifteen years of indecision, rootlessness end; 15 years of “deep home” begin.

Apr. 3 - April 9 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing new before April 23. A jolt might come to your domestic or property arena Sunday. (This day is merely the centre of two months of “jolt.”) Be careful with electricity around the house this day. On another level, events can jump-start you into a whole decade of new (money-earning) property dealings, new landscaping, new security initiatives (e.g., RSPs) – despite the word “new” your success now will come from reprising a past goal, condition or contact. Believe in life, buy a home! Fifteen years of money anxiety end; 15 years of “chatty” friendship begin. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: You might make a lively new friend this week. This person will not become a life-mate (or not a good one) but you can have lots of fun together. (The problem: a sadness or sombre streak in this person is a clue indicating their ability/tendency to restrict you or to connect too easily to your hidden side.) Despite this, real love is likely. Don’t start any new projects, especially in communications, paperwork or travel, before April 23. Your luck will come from past contacts, and it could be very bright luck! Be restful midweek. Romance, creative surges Thursday onward. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Start nothing new before April 23: deal with past or ongoing projects and relationships. A money, income or possession situation could hold three things (all of some): great luck, career import and “the future” of your earnings (for eight years). This last is highlighted Sunday, when a “jolt” might accompany it. If you can get past a certain skepticism about your own work or your own goals, this jolt could represent a splendid new path in earnings. (This path likely represents working with management or in government, large bureaucracies, charities or institutions.) A lucky week! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
