Blaze destroys N. Van home James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
A North Vancouver home that investigators say is “known to police” was gutted by a suspicious fire Sunday afternoon. Neighbours noticed smoke coming from the wood-frame bungalow at 411 West First St. at about 4 p.m. By the time emergency crews arrived, the house was fully involved. Firefighters got the blaze under control before it levelled the structure, but the damage was extensive enough that it will likely have to be torn down. No one was home to the time of the incident. Cpl. Peter DeVries, a spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP, said police See Police page 3

Walk home almost ends in death
Wrong turn on trail and a fall leaves man hypothermic, trapped James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
A North Vancouver man nearly died of hypothermia Sunday night after he got lost in a ravine on his way home from a party. Michael Conway, 29, left a housewarming celebration near Seymour’s Pub on Old Lillooet Road at about 9:30 p.m., intending to walk home along a trail he believed led west toward Mountain Highway and his home neighbourhood. He took a wrong turn, however, and wound up spending close seven hours in the forest — much of it with only one shoe — before he was finally extracted by rescuers.
The path Conway took after leaving the party — at which he had “a fair chunk” of alcohol, he said — didn’t connect with Mountain Highway, but instead turned north, leading him into a pitch-black Lynn Canyon. After walking for about about 45 minutes, Conway realized he had made a mistake, but before he could begin feeling his way back, he lost his footing and slid several metres down a slope he couldn’t climb back up. Unable to regain the trail, Conway decided to head downhill in search of an alternative. He soon found himself at the base of a deep gully, where he tried repeatedly and without success to climb the snowy sides — at one point sinking into icy water up to his knees — before finally calling police. Conway reached a 9-1-1 operator at about 10:30 p.m. He was unable to describe his location, however, knowing only that he was at the bottom of a slope near water, and that he had recently walked across planks. He was freezing cold, already suffering the early stages of hypothermia, and his phone’s battery was almost dead. See Rescued page 3

Rescued man thanks his rescuers From page 1
The operator called Conway’s cell provider and asked the company to ping his phone, a move that revealed the call had been routed through a cell tower at Ross and Duval Roads. The operator attempted to call Conway back, but by then the device was dead. Using that information and the victim’s vague description, North Vancouver RCMP launched a search. With temperatures dropping, the force called in a dog team and dispatched officers to the area where they believed he was trapped. The rescuers searched the canyon for an hour, calling his name, before they finally heard him yell back. Conway was at the bottom of a treacherous 200-metre slope. He had lost a shoe, and was by then suffering from frostbite in his exposed foot. Police called in North Shore Rescue, who pulled several members away from a call on Mount Seymour to help out. Over the next several hours, the volunteers rappelled carefully down to Conway’s position, gave him dry clothes, strapped him into a harness, and raised him out of his predicament. He was loaded into an ambulance at about 5:30 a.m. and taken to Lions Gate Hospital for treatment. Conway is expected to recover. Speaking at a news conference Monday, Conway said the experience had been harrowing. At the base of the canyon, in total darkness, losing feeling in his extremities, with his calls for help going unanswered and his cell phone dead, he had come to believe he really might die. “When I fell on my knees in the water, that was the first time I thought: ‘This could be it,’” he said. “I was panicked.” Conway said he took full responsibility for his error. “It was a bone-headed move,” he said. “It was pretty nuts what had to be done (to rescue me). I’m here to say: ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you.’”

W. Van looks to ocean for heat Geothermal exchange is possible in foreshore project
Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
THE District of West Vancouver is looking to tap into the ocean’s heat as part of a new geo-exchange pilot project.
The idea, currently being analyzed by engineers, is to embed a series of high-density plastic coils in rock being placed off the shore as part of the municipality’s erosion control program. If all goes as planned, those pipes will eventually be hooked up to a geo-exchange system to provide heat and cooling to both municipal buildings and private highrises in West Vancouver. An ocean geo-exchange system works similarly to the way ground geothermal systems work, said Steve Jenkins, manager of sustainability, environment and healthy communities for the district. Both use small differences in temperature between two surfaces to provide heating or cooling. Ocean geo-exchange is even more efficient than ground geothermal, said Jenkins, because “the ocean is a very stable temperature.”
Jenkins said ocean geothermal exchange technology is “well proven” and has been used in other places. Toronto uses a system in Lake Ontario to provide cooling in summer, while Burnaby has installed geothermal pipes in a pond in the middle of a golf course. Several private waterfront homes in West Vancouver are also using ocean geoexchange technology, he said, and have found it cuts down the use of natural gas by up to 80 per cent. Use of natural gas is a concern, said Jenkins, because its use creates much higher carbon emissions than hydroelectric power. So far, a commercial-size ocean geo-exchange project hasn’t been tried in British Columbia. “We would be the first,” said Jenkins. The municipality decided to look into the technology because it has already been placing recycled rock below the tide line to form artificial reefs along the shoreline. That project, being carried out in conjunction with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, is intended to provide erosion control and aquatic habitat. Jenkins said adding the geothermal pipe now would mean relatively small additional costs. Engineers are still examining what kind of load requirements an eventual system could meet and how
much a system would cost. But it’s possible that both new development projects and existing waterfront highrises could one day tap into the energy source, in addition to municipal buildings. Municipal staff is also talking to Terasen Gas — now known as FortisBC — about possibly partnering in a commercial geo-exchange project. Because the pipes will be placed in the ocean, it’s likely only buildings within a certain distance of the water could be hooked into the system, said Jenkins — but he added that could extend to several blocks from the shore. The municipality is hoping the ocean geoexchange system could also be hooked into the aquatic centre. There, an existing ground geothermal project has reduced natural gas consumption by 20 to 30 per cent, said Jenkins. But the system still isn’t large enough to supply heat for the main pool. The push for geo-exchange technology is being driven by both environmental and financial concerns, said Jenkins. The municipality paid BC Hydro more than $1 million and spent more than $524,000 on natural gas in 2009. A report on the feasibility of the project is expected by the end of March.
Rescuers stress dangerous backcountry conditions
James Weldon
jweldon@nsnews.com
FOUR backcountry skiers are lucky to be alive after getting trapped by severe avalanche conditions in a gully behind Mount Seymour, according to rescuers. The men, Lower Mainland residents in their mid20s and early 30s, had set out Sunday morning with the intention of skiing the resort’s first peak, but when they encountered unfavourable conditions they decided instead to head east from the summit into an out-ofbounds area in search of fresh tracks. The skiers soon realized they were in trouble when their movements started to trigger small avalanches. Unable to climb back up the slope safely, they continued northeast, heading deeper into the wilderness, in search
of a safe route out. The men eventually found themselves in the steep and treacherous Coldwell Creek drainage above Indian Arm, where they became trapped. With the light fading, they called friends for help, sending their co-ordinates from a GPS locator. The information was passed on to the North Vancouver RCMP, who called in North Shore Rescue. After that last call, the victims lost contact, having descended further down the gully into an area with no cell coverage. The volunteers assumed their co-ordinates were still likely accurate, however, and sent a 10-member team up the arm by hovercraft to the mouth of the creek. The team picked its way carefully up the drainage, calling the men’s names. At about 1 a.m., they got a reply. The rescuers found the men standing by the stream, cold but uninjured, some distance below the place where they had been when they had made their last call. They walked the victims back down to the waiting hovercraft
and transported them to safety. The incident underscored how dangerous the conditions are at the moment in the North Shore’s backcountry, said search manager Tim Jones. “Sunday was a very, very serious avalanche hazard day. People need to understand that on the North Shore they have to monitor the hazard rating on a day-to-day basis.” Adventurers also have to be sure they have the equipment and expertise to tackle terrain outside the major resort areas, said Jones. Sunday’s victims only had one avalanche locator and one shovel between them. “They were the equivalent of snowboarders who happened to get backcountry equipment that day,” he said. “All four of them could have been dead; they got a break on this one.” For up-to-date avalanche conditions and tips on safety, visit the Canadian Avalanche Association’s website at www.avalanche.ca.
Police say fire could have been deliberate From page 1
believe the fire may have been deliberately set, but that investigators were unable to enter the home Monday, fearing it was unsafe. “In some cases, buildings that have been burned have to be torn down before they can be assessed for any cause of the fire,” said DeVries. “I believe that that’s been a complicating fact in this investigation. They have not yet determined whether or not this is arson.” The force is familiar with the house from previous incidents, said DeVries, but he declined to elaborate. The 400-block of West First has been the site of a number of high-profile crimes in recent years. In October 2010, Pamela Mitchell, 54, was handed a 16month conditional sentence for setting fire to a shed and another home on the street following an argument with one of the residents. A man was arrested in the same block in July 2009 after allegedly stabbing another man in the neck, and in February 2007 a house party there came to an abrupt end when a partygoer was stabbed in the throat following an altercation believed to be related to drugs or money. The 27-yearold suspect in that case was later charged with attempted murder.

Changeover P
REMIER-designate Christy Clark won the Liberal leadership race as a self-styled “voice of change.” But how new has yet to be seen. Sure, she wasn’t in caucus when the Liberals dropped the HST bomb on us. But while she billed herself as an outsider during the campaign, Clark comes to the job with significant political history. She was deputy premier to Gordon Campbell during a period of deeply unpopular government cuts and the era of the B.C. Rail sell-off. And while she’s come out as promoting a “families first” agenda, it was hockey mom Clark who often rankled in her cabinet stints as children and families and education ministers. As education minister, it was Clark who imposed a contract on teachers, eliminating class-size limits and services
for kids with special needs. That’s ominous, as the teachers’ five-year contract will expire June 30. Clark also campaigned on cutting health-care spending, rather than increasing it. It’s hard to see how that will win over families with ailing elders. In Clark’s former political life, she was often criticized for a combative shoot-from-the-hip-and-ask-questionslater style. As premier, she may no longer have that luxury. In her favour, Clark is a populist, unlike the often-aloof Campbell. She also says she wants to decentralize decision-making, another welcome departure from the Campbell era. It’s early days for Clark. Only time will tell if her plan for change is real, or if we’ll get the same political gunslinger dressed up in outsider’s clothing.

Low Level bike route needed
Dear Editor: The Low Level Road Re-Alignment Project is a critical piece of the Pacific Gateway Program. The Low Level Road project objectives include increasing truck access to rail and marine terminals to facilitate increased importing and exporting goods. In addition, new train tracks with more capacity and increased marine transportation are planned. While contributing to economic growth, increases in all these forms of transportation will also contribute to increased air pollution, noise and truck traffic through our community. As well as being committed to economic growth, the provincial, federal and municipal governments are all advocates of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting active transportation as part of their long term plans for healthier communities. The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition’s North Shore committee recommends that the NEWS photo Paul McGrath organizations and governments involved in the North Shore Trade Plan take this as an opportunity PORT Metro Vancouver project manager Chris Hall (left), discusses to implement the first ever, purpose-built, flat, safe, details of the proposed Low Level Road improvement project with well-lit, regularly maintained bike route on the resident Victor Balon at a recent public open house for the $100North Shore. Bike planners wag the dog Dear Editor: When I read the Feb. 18 North Shore News article about the District of North Vancouver “steering away from the Joint Bicycle Advisory Committee” and reducing its relationship with JBAC to two members sitting on the district’s Transportation Planning Advisory Committee, I wasn’t sure whether it was the first sign of return to some rationality in the transportation matters, or if I was just day-dreaming, considering how these matters have been treated in the last two decades. If there is any sense of proportionality in our civic democracy, one should conclude that district car users ought to have more than 200 representatives on the transportation committee, as bicycling constitutes not even one per cent of transportation while car trips are 90 per cent. Among the committee’s 18 member spots, there is one designated for the representation of the auto commuters — vacant, by the way. That certainly beats my notion of logic, but it is still encouraging that now the tail will wag the dog a tiny bit less. Roman Skotnicki North Vancouver
Alter gas prices once a week
Dear Editor: Competition collusion is illegal yet that collusion appears obvious when it comes to our gas prices. There is no reason or need to change the prices at the pumps five or six times each day. Allow gas stations to set the price of gas only once a week — perhaps at 2 a.m. on Wednesdays. That’s it. The lowest priced pumps would get the most business. The following week the trend would continue. No more jacking up prices at rush hour and before long weekends. Arthur West North Vancouver

Broadcast watchdogs not barking much
“In 2010, the CRTC received 304 complaints about loud commercials. In 2009, there were 140 complaints and in 2008, 174 Canadians complained.” Carmen Chai, Postmedia News, Feb. 17
THE radar at Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) headquarters blipped wildly enough at 618 noise complaints over three years to wake up our telecommunications watchdog and cause it to bark.
But when we open up the Pandora’s Box of broadcast advertising, we find more to be concerned about than the decibel level of commercials. Has the watchdog’s nose been buried in kibble while the sound on Global TV was doubled over that of the competition of CTV and CBC? Or while the ratio of advertising to television programming accelerated toward a 50:50 split? Or while so-called infomercials actually became the programming? It is hard to believe the annual tally of complaints about those developments failed to raise blips on the CRTC radar. The subject, of course, becomes a good deal more
Just Asking
Elizabeth James complex when it comes to the actual messages and content of the advertisements themselves. And for that discussion we need to factor in the work of several non-governmental industry organizations: the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC), an organization created by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), and the non-profit Advertising Standards Canada (ASC). As an aside, all the groups mentioned — including the CRTC — have similar and overlapping interests; just think of the dollars to be saved if they and their satellite acronyms were to operate under one roof. Looking at advertising quality and content, let’s begin at the top, with the federal government: On March 19, 2010, Health Canada announced it
had “determined that adding synthetic caffeine to non-cola soft drinks in concentrations no higher than 150 parts per million (ppm) poses no health risk to consumers when they follow (its) recommendations for maximum daily caffeine intake.” Publicized on the Health Canada website, the announcement was accompanied by a burble about the need for consumer self-monitoring and voluntary disclosure labelling by manufacturers. The reason for recommending a maximum daily intake of 200 ppm, of course, is that caffeine is mildly addictive; you drink one, you want more. This is great for soft-drink sales, but for kids and those who are overweight or diabetic, not so much. So what does Health Canada do in follow-up? What else than run a series of expensive television ads to warn viewers about the health risks of the high sugar content in soft drinks. Right hand, left hand; use the caffeine to get consumers hooked and then give them a smack on the wrist for drinking too much sugar. Barely lower on the advertising ladder comes the automotive industry — about which I have two beefs if the acronyms are listening: The first is that while
the police spend valuable tax dollars on advertising to educate drivers to obey traffic rules and modify their reckless behaviour, the ever-helpful auto industry spends more on video clips that show drivers vroom-vrooming their engines as though they were at an Indy-race starting line. Responsible advertising? I don’t think so. In fact, you might be forgiven for wondering why some automotive sales pitches don’t offend Clause 10 of the ASC Code of Advertising Standards, which reads: “Advertisements must not without reason, justifiable on educational or social grounds,
display a disregard for safety by depicting situations that might reasonably be interpreted as encouraging unsafe or dangerous practices or acts.” More than a few TV commercials fit that description. My second beef is that whenever an auto manufacturer’s cars are fingered for serious safety recalls, viewers can count on their fingers the hours it takes for said manufacturer to ramp up its commercials that stress quality and safety — all evidence to the contrary. And the same can be said of food recalls come to that.
Bottom line is that, whether we are discussing decibel levels, the overkill of advertising minutes or the quality of the advertising itself, it should not take consumer complaints for the CRTC and the other acronyms to do their work; if, that is, they want to stem the exodus of viewers from what used to be considered basic television fare. In the meantime, we viewers can always fall back on our increasingly gnat-like attention spans and the TV remotes to deliver our own immediate, uncomplaining verdicts. rimco@shaw.ca

Judge postpones fraudster’s sentencing
Convicted but depressed woman will live on yacht Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
A woman who ripped off more than $100,000 from a West Vancouver widow will have a year to deal with her depression — including time living on a yacht off Malta — before she is sentenced for her crime.
A North Vancouver judge decided recently to delay sentencing so Clarice Vidalin, 57, can deal with her mental health problems and try to pay back some money to her former employer. Vidalin’s lawyer told the judge his client wants to go and live on the boat she owns in Europe for up to a year because she is too depressed to work and can’t afford to continue living in the Vancouver area. Vidalin has pleaded guilty to defrauding her former boss, Molly Lori Young, by transferring thousands of dollars from Young’s bank accounts to pay off her own massive credit card debts, racked up through compulsive spending. Vidalin used to work for Young’s late husband,
a West Vancouver businessman. After he died, his widow kept Vidalin on the payroll as a personal secretary and property administrator of her West Vancouver home. Because Young was often away, she gave Vidalin power of attorney over her bank account, authorizing Vidalin to pay her household bills. The widow “trusted Ms. Vidalin,” said Crown counsel Mark Rankin. But the relationship between the two women eventually soured. Shortly after Vidalin’s job ended in July 2007, Young discovered $7,000 had been transferred from her bank account to a Scotia Bank Visa card. Since she didn’t have any Scotia Bank accounts, Young immediately became suspicious. A forensic audit revealed 13 transfers totalling more than $64,000 from Young’s bank account to the Visa card accounts — held by Vidalin — between November 2005 and March 2007. Further investigation showed Vidalin was also paying herself more than the agreed-on wage of $4,000 a month, said Rankin. In total, about $110,000 of Young’s money went missing while Vidalin was handling the accounts, he said. He added the prospect of Young getting her money back is “doubtful.” Defence lawyer Mark Rowan said Vidalin’s problems stemmed from a lifelong struggle with depression that caused her to “spend money
NV man on ‘most wanted’ list
Jane Seyd
jseyd@nsnews.com
A former North Vancouver man who doused his wife in hairspray and set her on fire is on the B.C. RCMP’s “most wanted” list. Jeffrey Paul Emery, 55, has been on the run for more than five years since he skipped out partway through his trial. Police are still hoping to track him down so he can serve the jail sentence he was handed in absentia in 2005. He was listed last week as one of the 10 “most wanted” criminals in the province. Emery was at home with his then-spouse in the 200-block of Riverside Drive on April 13, 2004 when he accused her of having hidden his medication. When she didn’t produce it, he set her on fire. “She erupted in a fireball, causing third-degree burns to her arms, legs, torso, . . . thighs,” said North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Peter DeVries, speaking at a press conference on the case in July.
“Much of her hair was burned off, and the skin started peeling from her body.” Fearing discovery, Emery refused to call an ambulance and prevented the woman from leaving the house to seek medical attention for two weeks. Authorities only found out what had happened when a relative reported it to them. Emery stood trial in December 2004. But during a break for the Christmas holiday, Emery fled. Authorities have not seen him since. He was convicted of aggravated assault in absentia and sentenced to two years and eight months in jail. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest. Investigators have been following up leads for the past five years, but so far nothing has panned out. EmeryisCaucasian,sixfeetthreeinchestall,225 pounds with grey wavy hair and hazel eyes. He is a skilled handyman, particularly with boats, leading police to suspect he may be living near water. He requires prescription medication, meaning he will have to see a doctor and pharmacist regularly. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
compulsively. . . . She spent to make herself feel better.” He said she took the money from the employer to cover the bills she racked up during “the lowest point in her life.” She has since also been fired from a subsequent job after telling her boss about the criminal charges
she faced. “Right now it doesn’t look as though she’s employable,” said Rowan, adding the events have “weighed very heavily on my client.” Judge Carol Baird Ellan adjourned the sentencing until February of next year, saying she hoped Vidalin would manage to pay some of the money back to Young before that.

Todd Major I love a good rose; they are big, bushy and full of colour and fragrance. No other flower quite comes close to the beauty of a good rose. As for roses that succumb to all manner of disease, those are best shredded and spread over the compost pile to rot. There are three key things to do if you want to grow healthy roses. Firstly, choose the best location in which to grow your rose, which is not where you want it to grow but where it will grow best. Roses need lots of direct sunlight to flower well and to prevent disease attack — five or six hours of sunlight per day at minimum, eight hours preferred. Most roses don’t grow well in close proximity to other large shrub and tree roots, so plant them on their own or amongst perennials. Most roses prefer to grow in deep soil so the rose can dig its roots deep into the soil to find water and nutrients, so choose a location that suits. Secondly, prepare the soil thoroughly before planting. Roses grow best in a soil that has a diverse structure, a depth of at least two feet, but preferably deeper, and the soil should be reasonably well stocked with organic matter. Dig compost or manure into the planting hole to provide the myriad microbial activities that generate long-term soil fertility and to build soil structure. No chemical fertilizer can enhance microbial activity or build soil structure. Chemical fertilizers actually degrade microbial activity and degrade soil structure over

NOTHING compares to the beauty of a good rose. To grow healthy roses, choose a spot in your yard that has access to plenty of direct sunlight. the long-term. Dig and prepare the planting hole wider than the size of the rose you are planting and always dig deep to incorporate the organic matter throughout the soil. While it is true that roses are heavy feeders, contrary to the old myth, they do not need to be fertilized every month to flower well. The depth and quality of the soil you plant roses in can make all the
difference in the world. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, choose the right rose for your garden by doing some research. It’s useful to talk to other gardeners to see how their roses performed, but ultimately each garden has slightly different sun-lighting, soil type, air movement and so forth, so choose a rose to suit your conditions. There are so many classes of roses, from patio to
landscape to shrub to hybrid tea to climber to groundcover, that I do not have the space herein to go into all of them. I can tell you, however, that I have completely given up growing almost all hybrid tea and floribunda roses; they are simply too much trouble and 1,000 years of hybridization for colour has left them bankrupt of almost all fragrance. WELL it seems our friend Punxsutawney
I’m not so sure. Temperatures outside seem to dictate otherwise. In any case, there’s no reason not to begin planning our spring planting and future spring gatherings. If you know a good friend who loves to plant from seedlings, then this little hostess gift idea is for you. Simple terra cotta pots may be transformed quickly and beautifully with a little
planning and creativity. You will find seedling packets on many hardware and garden store shelves at the moment. Be sure to check the packet for information on the type of seed you are purchasing and whether it is recommended to start inside and plant outside later. In addition, check the expiry date of the seed packet.

Lay out two or three sheets of newspaper to get started. Paint your terra cotta pots in one solid or two complementary colours and let dry overnight. Paint the pots in stripes or polka dots for a fun effect. Once the paint is dry, fill the containers with the seedling packets and place the lid on top. Tie off the pot with the raffia or ribbon and attach the recipient’s nametag. These pots are great for starting off the seedlings inside on a window ledge before planting in larger pots or the garden later as the weather warms. If you know the colour of the recipient’s kitchen, it’s always nice to paint the pot in a co-ordinating colour for the kitchen window ledge. lunter@shaw.ca

From page 13 that’s just me. There are rose aficionados who would call me a heretic for making such a statement. I do like many of the tough and disease-resistant Meilland roses, which are bred for landscape and garden use. There are also many shrub roses of the rugosa type that are disease resistant and fragrant that I like and recommend. But more than any other rose, I really enjoy and recommend David Austin roses. Austin is the king of rose breeders in the world. Austin’s roses remind me of my grandmother’s rose garden, which was full of fragrance and colour every time I visited in the summer. Grandma grew big roses in garden beds, small roses in pots and climbing roses up trellises and into trees. Her roses were jubilant and robust. Most of all, grandma’s roses smelled delicious. The smell was so strong that on a hot summer day I could smell the fragrance as I got out of the car. I was too young to understand how she grew her roses, but the memory of playing in her garden, helping her to pick roses for the table and running through the garden chasing butterflies while avoiding bees is to this day a most potent

North Shore Family Caregiver Support Presents:
Caregiving for a Parent or Other Relative with Dementia
When sons and daughters take on a caregiving role for a parent, they do so in the context of their history with that parent. This session will include information on the differences between sons and daughters as caregivers, the experience of being a “voice” in the family, as well as time for questions and discussion.
Saturday, March 5, 2011 • 10:00am-12:00pm Silver Harbour Seniors’ Centre 144 22nd St. East, North Vancouver This workshop is presented by JoAnn Perry, PhD, professor emeriti from the School of Nursing at UBC. Her research and practice focus on family caregiving for and communicating with someone with dementia. Registration is not required. For more information, please contact Helen at 604-982-3313 or by email at helen.wait@nscr.bc.ca. Arthritis can strike our young
IT’S not uncommon for middle aged and older adults to sit around talking about their aches and pains.
They may mention that their knee has been bothering them or the joints in their fingers ache. And in the same breath they will wonder aloud whether they are developing Parenting Today arthritis. You hope not, but as we Kathy Lynn age it’s not all that unexpected that either we or some of our friends will find arthritis attacking our joints. After all, we think of arthritis as one of those conditions of the aging and elderly. Last year was the first time I heard about March being Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month. It was also the first time I ever became aware that arthritis can attack children. What’s even more surprising is that juvenile arthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases among children. It affects about one in 1,000. There is no cure but there is treatment that will allow kids to lead fulfilling lives.
When a child complains of a sore knee, we just assume that he fell and bruised it. And that’s probably just what happened. But when the soreness continues or moves to other joints, it’s time to get to the doctor. JA can be defined as continuous inflammation (pain, stiffness and swelling) of one or more joints lasting at least six weeks for which no other cause can be found. It’s important to have the condition diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. We are fortunate on the Lower Mainland because British Columbia Children’s Hospital has a number of pediatric rheumatologists to treat our children. As you can imagine, JA can affect a child’s social development. The pain prevents many from participating in regular childhood play. And they may have difficulty with tasks that are simply taken for granted (buttoning clothing, carrying books, walking to school). As a result, children and youth living with JA are often isolated from their peers, leaving them to feel lonely and sad. Living with JA can present challenges for the entire family. Parents are faced with the challenges, stress and sadness of coping with a chronically ill child. Siblings can resent the extra attention and care required by their sibling. JA also imposes significant financial demands on families; the demands can include the costs of treatments and therapies and the impact of time away from See Be supportive page 17

Young artist of the week Be supportive of friend with JA From page 16 work to tend to medical appointments. For everyone affected by arthritis — a child with juvenile arthritis, the parents and siblings of a child with JA, or an adult who is still living with JA — the Arthritis Society can help. The brochure You, Your Child & Arthritis is a useful tool for families. The toll-free Arthritis Information Line, the organization’s website at www.arthritis.ca and online discussion boards provide useful information, resources and support. There are also seminars and workshops offered by the Arthritis Society to help people manage the disease. In addition, the Arthritis Society is offering four free webcasts during the month of March. There will be one each Saturday. Conducted by leading pediatric rheumatologists, health care and education professionals and families living with juvenile arthritis, these interactive sessions will deal with complexities, transitions, and relationships. These webcasts are free. You can attend them online and, as a bonus, one of the presentations is being offered from Vancouver,

so you have the option of attending a live session. Each of the webcasts will deal with a different aspect of JA and you register by visiting www.juvenilearthritis.ca If your child has a friend with arthritis, you can by supportive by acknowledging the disease. Don’t say she can’t have it because she’s young. Help your child to understand that their friend may have some limitations, such as not being able to run with the other kids or needing splints on their sore joints. Explain that these are as necessary as braces or eyeglasses. Talk to the friend’s parents and find out what her limitations are so you can ensure that the kids play together happily and safely. Let us hope that research can unlock the mysteries of arthritis and some day we talk about it as a condition of the past. Kids get cooking in classes Deana Lancaster
dlancaster@nsnews.com
IT’S an intriguing new trend in children’s education, and one has to wonder if the
demand came from kids themselves or from their hungry parents looking for a tasty meal.
Debby Tonn — founder of the about-to-be-launched kids’
cooking school, The Hungry Oven — says children’s cooking classes have been all the rage in the U.S. for a number of years, and had only really started to migrate north to Central Canada more recently.
In our own neck of the woods, “there have been summer programs and classes at community centres,” she says, adding that her own daughter took kid’s cooking during a Capilano University
summer program and loved it, “but there aren’t really any forprofit cooking schools aimed at younger kids.” So what’s the impetus for kids’ migration to the kitchen? A larger trend toward knowing exactly what we’re eating, and eating healthier is part of it, says Tonn. Many parents want to introduce this concept to their children at a
Pre-Kindergarten program starting September 2011.

younger age. A recent article in the Daily Mail said research shows children are starting to cook younger than ever. On average they now cook their first meal at only seven – five years earlier than their parents’ generation did. “It’s an idea whose time has come,” says Tonn. “There’s nothing more thrilling than to have your son or daughter say to you ‘I made dinner tonight.’” The Hungry Oven is slated to open in the second week of May in a 4,000-square-foot space on Churchill Crescent in North Vancouver. With two commercial kitchens and a “Kinder Kitchen” with induction ranges for children aged three to nine, the school is set to offer a range of courses to all age groups, with executive chef Johannes Oberbichler, formerly a restaurant chef instructor with Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. And while it is primarily for children, The Hungry Oven will also offer some special classes for adults, such as Date Night, Girls’ Night Out and Guys’ Night. KEEPING young students focused on their work is not an easy task, but one that teachers face every day. Many have already learned this surefire trick: playing a game can help students in their retention of learned material, wake them up and refresh them, and it can be a lot of fun to boot. The authors have presented 101 games that can be used in a variety of ways. The games could be introduced during any part of a classroom session. The games are presented alphabetically but they can be played in any order. Beneath each title is information on the games application. This could be to tell the number of players, the type of game or the materials needed, all of which is helpful when choosing a game to play. For example, Great Balls of Fire! is a game requiring

Listening without judgment Teens talk frankly about their issues Erin McPhee
emcphee@nsnews.com
BY focusing on parent education and youth empowerment, a collaborative community prevention project is effectively forging connections between adults and teens. Let’s Talk Shop is an ongoing free facilitated evening event made possible by a host of local partners, including Vancouver Coastal Health, Capilano Community Services Society, Ambleside Youth Centre, Parkgate Community Services, North Shore Neighborhood House, the North and West Vancouver school districts, the North Shore Action on Prevention Task Force and the City of North Vancouver. “Educators can give all kinds of tips and provide the most recent best practice on prevention and the latest research, but really when parents hear teenagers talking about those very issues that they know that their own teenagers are facing, there’s a
certain amount of credibility that that information provides,” says Lawrie Graham, a Vancouver Coastal Health alcohol and drug prevention educator based in North Vancouver. Since the inaugural session of Let’s Talk Shop in January 2010, five have been held so far with the sixth set for March 9. Let’s Talk Shop brings small groups of parents of teenagers and teenagers together, giving youth the floor. “It’s really just an opportunity for the young people to answer those difficult questions around stress, relationships, drugs and alcohol, peer pressures (and) family pressures and share those insights with the parents,” says Graham. “It’s a very respectful situation where the parents are just listening to the teenagers.” Facilitators, like Graham and other community youth workers, are on hand to ensure there’s no glamorization of risky behaviour and to offer statistics as needed, for example from the McCreary Centre Society’s B.C. Adolescent Health Survey.
“Parents walk away with a renewed sense of empathy and respect for young people, understandingtheirchallenges and confidence to be more effective agents of their own life,” says Graham. Events alternate between being held in North and West Vancouver, seeing parents from North Vancouver meet with teenagers from West Vancouver and vice versa. “That provides a little bit of confidentiality and anonymity for the students,” says Graham. The most recent event was held Jan. 25 at the West Vancouver Community Centre. Jessie Ewing, 18, a student at North Vancouver’s Youth Learning Centre, views Let’s Talk Shop as an effective model for change. “You’re really open and you’re telling them straight up what you’re feeling and how you think a youth would like a parent to handle things,” she says. Ewing hopes parents take away the importance of listening to their children. “It’s a very good learning experience and it can really help your relationship with your child,” she says, adding the same can be said for the
teens who participate. Having parented a number of teenagers with one left at home, participant Eileen Guss said it was a very powerful evening, and found herself walking away with increased confidence and awareness. “It got rid of a lot of assumptions that I had,” she says. The January session reaffirmed the importance of healthy communication with teens, spending quality time with them and sitting down and making a concerted effort to listen to how they’re feeling and what they’re thinking, without judgment. “It’s surprising when you do hear them, that what you thought isn’t true at all, what you’ve been worrying about, what you’ve been catastrophizing, it’s not like that at all,” says Guss. “It gives you real piece of mind,” she adds. The next event is being held March 9 at Balmoral secondary, seeing North Vancouver parents listen to a panel of West Vancouver teens. Adults or teenagers interested in attending this or future Let’s Talk Shop events can contact Graham at lawrie. graham@vch.ca.

YOUR NORTH SHORE GUIDE to EXCEPTIONAL CUISINE
Yohachi inspires longterm loyalty
Deana Lancaster dlancaster@nsnews.com
THE last time Yohachi Sushi got a mention in this space, the review was composed by my predecessor, the incomparable Timothy Renshaw.
His commentary included a number of North Shore restaurants at which to have lunch. Also listed: Kilby’s in Edgemont (gone now), Norté (gone now) and the Beach House at Dundarave Pier (vastly different and about to undergo another transformation in the fall). In fact, of the handful mentioned in the grainy pdf of the article clipping — because the North Shore News didn’t have an electronic archive back then — Yohachi is the only one
NEWS photo Paul McGrath
A plate of assorted sushi at Esplanade’s Yohachi Sushi includes salmon battera, an oyster shooter with a quail’s egg and yamakake with mountain potato. that remains unchanged; still in its Esplanade Avenue location, still serving the same fresh, authentic Japanese fare. That says something.
Yes, it does say that the room could probably use an update; the mid-’80s space is all high ceilings, art deco angles and glass storefront.
But it also speaks to the longevity of a well-executed concept; to food that is wellprepared and tasty enough to inspire loyalty, even while hip new destinations open nearby and flashier options abound. My coworker Shorty and I made the downhill trek recently to sample a late lunch at Yohachi, and found ourselves quickly ensconced at a table with hot green tea in hand. The sushi staples are all available on the menu but there’s plenty more to be had if you’re up for trying it. Owner and chef Takuya Iwaki was formally trained as a sushi chef in Japan. Before opening Yohachi in 1996, he worked at a number of highend sushi restaurants in town. He works with pedigreed ingredients and likes to serve lesser known specialties when they are available, such as pine mushroom soup (dobinmushi), sablefish (gindara), grilled whole squid (ika sugatayaki) and herring roe on kelp (komochi konbu). He doesn’t add MSG to the food, and uses only wild salmon and real crab. He even makes a roll with the very controversial natto, or fermented soybeans. We skipped those and started with gyoza, lace-edged dumplings stuffed with a gusty blend of pork and ginger and served sizzling hot. Shorty

Here are some recipes that are a bit more special than the normal weekend flapjacks out of a box. They’re pretty easy and really delicious. You can freeze leftover pancakes (in the unlikely event there are any) and reheat them in a toaster or toaster oven for a quick breakfast.

YOU might call it Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, but to me it’s Pancake Day (this year it’s March 8). When my sisters and I were small, my dad always made what he called “ponkers” that day and it was a huge treat.

also slurped up a citrus-sharp sunomo salad swimming with glass noodles and shrimp, and I inhaled my miso soup. Then we were on to our mains. Shorty is the perfect lunch companion for this kind of outing. “I always like to order the rolls that I’ve never heard of,” she told me. “Sometimes that works out for me, sometimes not.” This time it was a winner, though more food than she needed: the futomaki (fat roll) was stuffed with a generous combination of dried fish flakes, omelette and vegetables. The knock-it-out-of-thepark home run, though, was my kakuni: pork belly braised until lusciously tender in soy sauce and sake, topped with tendrils of shaved green onion and served with nutty brown rice. Service was decent, though we’d have loved side plates for our shared dishes, and we did have to ask for refills of our tea. Still, I can understand why Yohachi continues to draw fans; I won’t wait so long before visiting again. The bill for our lunch added up to about $32, including HST. Apple syrup makes your griddle cakes killer From page 25
2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla Melt butter in the microwave and set aside to cool. In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients. Make a well in the centre. In a medium bowl, whisk eggs with buttermilk, cooled melted butter and vanilla. Pour into the well in the flour mixture. With a wooden spoon, stir until just blended (this is the secret to fluffy pancakes — the batter should be lumpy; if you stir until it’s smooth the pancakes will be rubbery). Lightly coat a frying pan or griddle with butter and set over medium heat. Heat pan until a drop of
water dropped on the pan sizzles. Pour 1⁄3 cup of batter onto heated pan (pancake will be about six inches wide). Add more pancakes if your pan is big enough, use two pans to make more pancakes at once. Cook the pancakes until bubbles form on top and the edges look a bit dry; with a wide spatula flip and cook the other side until the bottoms are golden, about two minutes. (If you don’t trust your flipping skills, you can make the pancakes smaller.) Don’t press down on pancakes during cooking. Serve right away or place on a plate and keep warm in a 250 degree oven while cooking remaining pancakes.
These are sooo good — be careful flipping them since they are very tender and delicate. Be sure to try the apple syrup, it’s killer with these pancakes. Makes 4 servings. ¾ cup all purpose flour ¼ cup granulated sugar 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp salt 1½ tsp baking powder ¼ cup plus 2 tbsp milk 1 large egg 1 tbsp molasses 2 tbsp Roger’s or Lyle’s Golden Syrup 3 tbsp vegetable oil, plus more for

Multigrain pancakes: guilt-free cooking the pancakes. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. In a small bowl stir together dry ingredients. In a glass measuring cup, combine the milk, egg, molasses and syrup; add to the flour mixture and stir with a fork until mixture is just combined but not smooth. Add a little more milk if batter seems too thick (it should be just pourable). Brush a non-stick skillet or griddle with a little oil; heat over medium-low heat. Add the pancake mixture to the pan a generous tablespoon at a time and spread to make a 2½- inch round; cook until lightly browned. Flip and brown on the other side. Repeat until all the batter has been used, keeping pancakes warm in the oven until all have been cooked. Door Prizes Gift Bag for Brides Fashion Show Special Displays Moussavian - Dr. Hamid Grieving the passing of Dr. Hamid Moussavian, our eternally beloved husband, father, grandfathers, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, we will celebrate his inspiring life, never short of accomplishments as a champion of social justice throughout his long, impactful and vibrant career, and also after his retirement. A memorial ceremony will be held on Friday March 4th, 2011 from 6-8 PM at West Royal Towers Lounge, 328 Taylor Way, West Vancouver. He was a scholar of Iranian history and culture and the Farsi language, as well as an accomplished calligrapher. Thanks to his remarkable memory, he knew by heart a large repertoire of Persian poetry that he skilfully reproduced in his beautiful calligraphy. In addition to his passion and devotion to his Iranian identity, he was a citizen of the vast world that he discovered in his many voyages across the globe. He proudly embraced Canadian Citizenship, and found a home in the diverse fabric of Canadian society. The family will be forever grateful for the professionalism but also absolute kindness, care and love that Dr. Moussavian received from the wonderful staff of the Capilano Care Centre, where he spent over two years before his passing. He is survived by his wife and soul mate Pari, his children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces.
