Criminals didn’t take a break

City criminals didn’t take a Christmas vacation – in fact they just got busier BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

It had all the makings of a great year of crime decreases in the Royal City. But then December happened. December 2010 saw a 41 per cent increase in the number of Criminal Code offences, with 510 total offences during the month. In December 2009, there were 362 offences. “The year was going along smoothly until we hit the month of December,” said Deputy Chief Dave Jones. “December was a very busy month with robberies, assaults, property crime and another homicide. “But we do have to keep in mind that overall, for the entire year, we are still down three per cent.” The numbers bear witness to Jones’ claim, as there were 5,560 total Criminal Code offences in 2010, or 161 fewer than the 5,721 recorded in 2009. If not for the December spike, the overall numbers would have been down six per cent overall. Across individual categories of crime, the largest increase came in theft from auto, where December 2010 saw 106 instances, up 172 per cent from the December 2009 total of 39. Overall, theft from auto increased 15 per cent from 2009 to 2010, going from 730 to 839. Another large increase came in drug offences, which were up 21 per cent overall from 2009 to 2010, with 273 offences in 2009 and 331 offences in 2010. The largest decreases came in breakand-enters, where the overall 2010 figure of 462 is 25 per cent less than the 618 break-and-enters in 2009. ◗Crime Page 4

Snow returns: Above, Sue Olson was out with her dog Lady. Below, a car that couldn’t stop on York Street and ended up in a home on East Seventh Avenue.

BY ALFIE LAU REPORTER alau@royalcityrecord.com

Benny Birovchak thought it was somebody knocking on his door at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. But it wasn’t a person that caused a commotion on East Seventh Avenue after a car going down York Street was unable to stop and crashed into the house of one of Birovchak’s neighbours. “York Street is quite steep and it ends at Seventh so it looks like a guy came down a bit too fast, it was icy and he ended up in the house.” Thankfully, the man was able to get out of the car himself and was already on the phone when Birovchak looked out his window and started snapping pictures of the accident. “This isn’t the first time somebody’s come down York and couldn’t stop,” said Birovchak, a longtime resident of the area. “I remember once during Expo (‘86), a big Winnebago came down and couldn’t stop. … There used to be a fire hydrant here that they had to move.”

Birovchak said he was surprised as everybody else that the morning’s weather included snow. “We’ve got at least an inch right now,” Birovchak said at 10 a.m. Thursday. “It’s still coming down pretty hard. … I think we’ll be close to a couple of inches soon.” But it didn’t last long. By nightfall most of the snow had been washed away by rain, and more rain followed that through the rest of the week.

The Great British Columbia ShakeOut! January 26, 2011 10:00 am British Columbians must get better prepared before the next big earthquake, and also practice how to protect ourselves when it happens. ShakeOut, a province-wide “Drop, Cover and Hold On” drill, is to help people and organizations do both. All residents, agencies, businesses, and organizations across British Columbia are encouraged to take part in the largest earthquake drill in Canadian history! Why is it important to do a Drop, Cover, and Hold On drill? As with anything, to react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake, before strong shaking knocks you down--or drops something on you. Drop to the ground, take Cover under a table or desk, and Hold On to it as if a major earthquake were happening (stay down for at least 60 seconds). Practice now so that you will immediately protect yourself during an earthquake. For more information on The Great British Columbia ShakeOut and how you can participate, please visit www.shakeoutbc.ca.

City’s new top cop: up close and personal P

olice, soccer and family.

Look around Dave Jones’ office and it’s hard to miss the three most important things in the life of the 48-year-old who was appointed Wednesday as the new chief constable of the New Westminster Police Service. Jones, who had served the last two years as the deputy chief, succeeds Lorne Zapotichny, who announced on Jan. 5 that he would be retiring on Feb. 28. It’s been a slow and steady climb to the top for Jones, who joined the New Westminster Police ON MY BEAT Service in September ALFIE LAU 1986 and has held almost every title in the department. “I did my practicum here as a reserve constable,” said Jones. “I was also the last person to hold the rank of Corporal before they got rid of it here. …I’m very proud to have been selected to be Chief Constable.” But to pigeonhole the man as a career cop would be to do a disservice to the many things Jones has accomplished outside his job. As a volunteer in Coquitlam, he helped bring about the revitalization of the Coquitlam Town Centre fields. As a soccer coach, his teams have consistently challenged for provincial and national titles. And as a parent, he has been a shining example to his blended family that doing the right thing all the time isn’t easy, but it’s achievable with effort and determination. There’s so much more to the man who will be setting the direction for the police service that having him tell you a couple of stories from his past reveals that the New Westminster Police Service is in good hands.

O

ne of the first jobs Dave Jones had after graduating from Centennial Secondary in Coquitlam was as a prison guard at Oakalla prison in Burnaby. Jones would spend four years there and when he left to begin his Royal City policing career, his last boss there, Peter Fouquette had a prediction. “Peter told me that one day, I would be the chief in New Westminster,” said Jones. “Peter was always one of the strongest supporters, maybe my first supporter. … I’m happy I could prove him right.” During Jones’ four years at Oakalla, starting when he was 19, he saw four major riots take place and hundreds of disturbances that taught him he could deal with almost anything life threw at him. “The one riot I remember best was when the west wing was taken over,” said Jones. “The thing you remember most is the noise is so loud, it’s so deafening and what you’re trying to do is make sure you contain the riot to one area.” What made that riot so hard was that the inmates got control of the fire escape,

meaning they controlled all five levels of the west wing. “We secured the end gates and put perimeter security all around,” said Jones. “They breached the wall by knocking a hole through but they didn’t get out.” The guards eventually got control of the prison, and Jones would file away that experience as he pursued his policing career. “I knew in Grade 10 that I wanted to be a police officer,” said Jones. “I went to Douglas College to study criminology and I was going to school part-time as I worked. “I applied to the RCMP but I stopped my application because I had a young son and I couldn’t see myself leaving him here while I went to Depot. “My grandparents lived in New Westminster and I’d done my practicum with Tony Hume in New West so I got to know the city well.” Jones had four years of experience as a reserve officer in the Royal City and he would beat out hundreds of other applicants for one of three spots in his class. In his New Westminster policing career, Jones is proud of his time on the street crime unit – the commendation for that unit’s work hangs on his office wall – and on the drug section because that’s where he helped make the biggest difference. “Street crime was something that had to be addressed,” said Jones. “It was a crisis that we had to deal with. … To be a part of that unit that helped clean up that problem and give the community back to the people, it’s something I’m very proud of.”

Family is never far from Jones’ heart. Happily married to his wife Sheila for 22 years, the couple have three children, Kingsley, 29, now in his fifth year as a New Westminster police officer; Mike, 28, a plumber; and Kyle, 18, a university student. “Don’t forget to mention that I’ve got a grandson as well,” said Jones. “Ryder is two-and-a-half and we’re expecting our second grandchild in July. ... I don’t mind being called a grandfather, but I do like telling my wife she’s a grandmother.”

J

ones is proud of all his kids, but how Kingsley has handled working in the same police service as his father is something Jones is only too happy to talk about. “Do we talk? Of course we do, but it’s when he has general questions,” said Jones. “On specifics, he goes to his supervisors, his mentors, the people he should be going to. ... As a fifth-year constable, he’s working in a completely different area. We both realize there has to be a level of separation.” Jones said that when his son initially came to him to say he was applying in New Westminster, he listened carefully and didn’t pre-judge. “The thing that stuck with me was he told me that if being a New Westminster police officer was so good for me, why wouldn’t it be just like that for him,” said Jones. “I warned him that it wouldn’t be easy and there wasn’t any way for me to make it easier for him. ... He told me ‘You’ve never made it easier on me so why

would this be any different?’” The middle son, Mike, has also recently overcome a major obstacle. “Mike was diagnosed with colon cancer two years ago,” said Jones. “It came on so fast and it looks like he’s OK now. ... What I’ll remember most is how the boys really rallied around Mike. ... I saw how close the kids are and how important family is to them. ... One day, Kingsley needed someone to babysit Ryder and Mike was the first to volunteer. ... Mike figured he had the time and he was happy to spend more time with Ryder.” The youngest son, Kyle, attended the University of Victoria but recently transferred to Simon Fraser, where he wants to try and make the golf team there. “Kyle’s a very good golfer,” said Jones. “He’ll do well at whatever he chooses.” As for Ryder, Jones already has a prediction. “Both his parents are police officers, so that kid’s got no hope,” he joked.

A

midst the family photos, police commendations and university degrees on Dave Jones’ office walls are pictures of several soccer teams Jones was fortunate enough to help coach. “This is the team I think from 1997 that went all the way to the nationals,” said Jones. “There’s Kingsley and in the front, there’s Andrew Corazza, who was our striker and now he’s a constable with us in New Westminster.” “My philosophy on coaching is simple,” ◗Chief Page 4

Chief: Building the strongest team ◗ continued from page 3

said Jones. “Put players in a position so they can succeed. … I don’t want the 16 best players, I want the 16 players who can work best as a team. At the end of the day, I’m not going to judge my goalie by how many goals he scores or my strikers on how many shots they save. … Put people in clearly defined roles, and teach them how to do that role to strengthen the team.” Jones has been a longtime coach for Coquitlam Metro-Ford, so much so that this year, he was Kingsley’s assistant for the u-18 squad that also went to nationals and came back with all the hardware. “I’m more of an assistant,” said Jones. “Because Kingsley and (the other coach) Colin Betts are both police officers, they’re sometimes called off to work and they need me to run practice. ... I’ve been involved so long that all I’m doing is what they’ve already put in. It’s one voice coaching the kids.” Jones doesn’t want to take credit for one of the more inspirational things that happened at last year’s nationals in St. John’s, N.L. “One of our forwards, Vaughn (Andrews) broke his leg early in the season, and he’d been playing with all his friends for such a long time that they all knew the only way for him to finish up with them is if they get to nationals in

October. “Vaughn’s doing well, but he has a setback in August, and the doctors have to put a rod in his leg. … He flies out with us to nationals, but it’s not looking like he’ll be ready to play. “In the final, we’re up 3-0, and I didn’t know Kingsley was going to do this, but he told Vaughn that he would put him in in the last couple of minutes as long as he didn’t do anything stupid. … “Kingsley just felt like Vaughn had earned the right to finish up a championship season with all his friends. Even (Vaughn’s) mom didn’t know this was going to happen.” Jones said that’s the type of team he’s proud to be involved in and what he wants to replicate with the New Westminster Police Service. “Policing is a lot like team sports,” said Jones. “You have to be able to rely on the guy beside you at all times. … Just like I want the best group of 16 players on a soccer team, I want the best group of officers doing the job we need them to do as New Westminster police officers. “My job is not a job of privilege, but a job of responsibility. It’s a huge amount of responsibility, and I’m not afraid of it.” ◗ Dave Jones becomes chief constable of the New Westminster Police Service on March 1. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Crime: Vehicle theft numbers keep falling ◗ continued from page 1

“We also have to take into account that our break-and-enters used to be up in the 1,300 and 1,400 range annually,” said Jones. “We’ve been driving those numbers down.” Another category showing double-digit percentage decreases was in vehicle theft, where the city saw a 14 per cent overall decrease from 2009 to 2010. In 2009, there were 391 vehicle thefts reported, and that number fell to 335 in 2010.

“I think some of the trends we’ve seen are opportunistic crimes, like theft from auto are up significantly,” said Jones. “We do meet every Wednesday to discuss trends and how we can drive the numbers down.” In 2010, New Westminster recorded three homicides, including the deaths of Patrick Leblanc in April, Nelson Ramirez Guerrero in November, and David MaCaulay in December. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

Waves Coffee House continues to grow In the last six years, Waves Coffee House has made quite a ripple in the java business. In 2005, the local coffee purveyor opened its doors at the corner of Hastings and Richards streets in downtown Vancouver, and since then have opened about five new locations a year. Today, there are 22 across the Lower Mainland, with a new Waves slated to open on Robson Street in early spring, as well as three in Calgary, Alberta. Impressive for a company which was founded right here on the West coast. “I think what makes us stand out is that we really are very much involved in the communities which we serve,” says Kayvan Rahmati, marketing director for the chain of coffee shops. What makes Waves unique is how it encourages community groups to gather and enjoy its ambiance. Waves invite customers to linger and warm up around its fireplaces, cozy couches and leather chairs. Head over to any Waves on any given day and you might catch reading club members bantering the merits of its monthly selection, while enjoying their favourite specialty drink. Or watch the creativity and camaraderie of the knitting group that gets together for inspiration and a laugh or two, once a week. “We also have four of our locations which have conference rooms that anyone can book free of charge,” says Rahmati, adding all locations have free WiFi. “We want to be the neighbourhood gathering place.” Waves provide a warm and inviting atmosphere, and offers espresso beverages, coffees, international loose leaf teas, real Belgian hot chocolate, and a variety of other caffeine free and high in antioxidant beverages. They also feature delicious paninis and freshly baked goods, delivered fresh daily from local bakeries. From the moment you walk into any Waves Coffee House, you’ll feel a warm and inviting energy and a sense of community that will keep you coming back. In 2008 and 2010, Waves was recognized by the Brand Coaches as the Hottest Brand in Canada, beating out more than 1,500 specialty coffee retail businesses across the country.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR City’s math was ‘fuzzy’ ◗ continued from page 6

for its own designs. As for the current design: “The design doesn’t fit, so the architect should quit,” or at least go back to the drawing board with public input. His reference to the CIBC building and the Old Columbia Theatre (formerly a.k.a. the Burr) reminded me of our efforts to not only preserve these icons of New Westminster’s past, but also restore them in an amalgam to be a new arts centre with the original Columbia Theatre configuration as a home for legitimate theatre. Unfortunately, the city sold both the CIBC building and the old Columbia Theatre so as not to interfere with its “edifice complex” embodied in the new “civic centre.” With respect to the old Columbia Theatre, in our response to the city’s request for proposals offering $1,000,000 for the property, we committed, as our first priority, to restore the façade including the Columbia Theatre’s iconic sign, to conform to the city’s requirement. And what did taxpayers get from the $850,000 successful bidder? The “fuzzy math” in that “behind closed doors deal” is almost as atrocious as Coun. Harper’s “three-card monte” attempt to justify an obvious budget overrun on the 150th anniversary celebration in order to buttress his plans to run again for city councillor or even the mayor’s chair. The use of statistics in his opinion piece is truly “Much ado about nothing” and more reminiscent of the old adage that “politicians use statistics like a drunk uses a lamp post – more for support than illumination!” Ted Eddy, president, Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society

The politics of water Dear Editor:

Re: Water vote was unanimous (Letters to the editor, The Record, Jan. 19). In his letter, trustee Michael Ewen asks “what purpose is served when an individual attacks a trustee for doing something that every other trustee has done.” As usual, trustee Ewen is spraying ink into the water like an escaping squid and trying to divert attention away from the hidden agenda underlying the attempt to ban bottled water in the New Westminster school district. To the best of my knowledge, trustee Lori Watt is the only trustee on the New Westminster school board whose employer has a monetary interest in seeking to have bottled water banned. Banning bottled water, as anyone can easily discover on their own, is a major component of the anti-contractingout/anti-privatization agenda of Watt’s employer, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). And because CUPE has a monetary interest in this matter it places their employee, trustee Watt, in a conflict of interest. Trustee Watt’s conflict of interest is certainly not the only conflict of interest one could point to in the New Westminster school district. However, it is the most glaringly obvious, and it needs to be addressed. It’s shameful to think that some trustees are willing to place the health and welfare of New Westminster’s school children second to the agenda of an outside special interest group. And especially so considering the advice received by the board in this matter from the medical health officer.

thread that followed that story. More than 150 comments were posted. Almost none of them expressed any kind of sympathy at all for James, and in fact many said James deserved being threatened. This brings us to a key part of the growing problem: the anonymity of the Internet, which allows anyone the chance to smear another without having to be held accountable. If I (or any other reporter or editor at this newspaper) were to libel someone, the consequences would be harsh. The aggrieved party would sue, and there’s a good chance the offending writer would pay a significant financial penalty. But on

websites and blogs, people are allowed to post the most outrageous, libellous, threatening and inaccurate comments and because they do so under the cowardly cloak of anonymity (or pseudonyms) they face no consequences. Yet their comments hang in the air and get traded back and forth by like-minded individuals who will quickly accept anything said or written that neatly fits their preconceived views. Media outlets should return to the days of the rigid letters-to-the-editor policies that took steps to ensure all published comments were accurately signed. For now, they have abandoned ethical standards for the sake of

accumulating website “hits” in order to impress potential advertisers. Personally, I think Sarah Palin, the Tea Party and commentators like Glenn Beck are a menace. But that political movement is certainly entitled to participate in the political process – as long as its proponents don’t cross the line of decency, civility and accuracy. But don’t think for a moment the extremists who have poisoned political debate in the U.S. don’t also exist here. They can be found in Canada, on the left and right, and they are mostly on the Internet. If you don’t believe me, just ask Craig James. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

City part of quake drill

If you find yourself in New Westminster City Hall next Wednesday morning, don’t be alarmed if you find staff hiding under their desks. The City of New Westminster has joined more than 330,000 British Columbians in signing up to participate in the first Great British Columbia ShakeOut, organized by the Provincial Emergency Program. The inaugural earthquake safety awareness event involves a two-minute drill at 10 a.m. focusing on the mantra “drop,

cover and hold on!” – meaning that if the earth starts moving, you should drop to the floor, find cover under a desk or other piece of solid furniture, and hold on to it for at least 60 seconds. “We don’t really expect too many people to actually go under their desks, it’s really more of an educational campaign to spread awareness to the public,” said Dave Jones, the city’s manager of emergency management. “What is fantastic about it is ◗Earthquake Page 10

ensuring that everyone in the province is able to have their needs met. “I have liked what Adrian has to say, his emphasis on equality issues, people who don’t have enough,” she said. “I like the fact, too, in the economy, he seems to have a handle on fairly concrete terms on provincial issues.” Some political pundits have suggested the B.C. Liberals would be thrilled to see New Democrats select Dix as their next leader. While working for Clark, Dix backdated a memo regarding the controversial casino selection process, in which he said his boss had asked him to ensure he wasn’t part of any decision related to a casino in Burnaby. Hagen said Dix has always been upfront about a couple of issues, where he acknowledged he shouldn’t have done what he did. She said he’s represented his constituents well since 2005, is “on topic” with many of the issues of concern to citizens and has been working to bring issues to the public’s attention and hold the government to account. Puchmayr said there are few B.C. Liberal leadership candidates who have an unblemished record.

“We look at the candidates and what they have to deliver,” he said. Coun. Lorrie Williams hasn’t decided whom she’ll be supporting in the leadership race. “I still haven’t made up my mind. I guess I am going to wait and see until the leadership convention,” she said. “It’s not a slam-dunk for me.” Williams said her decision on who to support may have been a slam-dunk if Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian had decided to run as leader of the B.C. NDP. Coun. Bill Harper hasn’t decided whom he will be supporting, but knows who won’t be getting his vote. With the NDP having selected Carole James as its leader through a democratic process, he won’t be supporting anyone who helped remove her as leader. “To me that breaks one of the most fundamental rules of democracy,” he said of the process that led to her resignation as party leader. Lali and Simons were among a group of about a dozen dissidents who didn’t support James, which ultimately led to her decision to resign as party leader. “They are not on my list,” Harper said.

Q

My wife and I have separated after a 25-year marriage because she had an affair with a co-worker. We were discussing the division of assets and I do not want to give her much because she had an affair. She says I have to divide the assets equally. Who is right? For the most part, conduct in a marriage does not have any bearing on the division of family assets. In British Columbia, we have a no-fault system under which the court usually does not look at conduct when determining an asset division. On the face of it, after a 25-year marriage, the assets would likely be divided equally. However, if your wife has taken family assets and given them to her boyfriend, or frivolously spent money on her boyfriend or for any other purpose, you might be entitled to an unequal division of assets. You need to speak to a lawyer to determine all of your rights.

Earthquake: Local schools set to take part in safety drill ◗ continued from page 9

it’s getting the message into the schools and having kids prepared for what to do in case in case it ever happens someday.” According to Al Balanuik, School District 40’s assistant superintendent of schools, all nine of the Royal City’s elementary schools and both middle schools will be

taking part in the event. However, although local post-secondary institutes such as Douglas College and the Justice Institute of B.C. have also signed on, along with several private businesses and non-profit organizations, local high school students aren’t scheduled to be hitting the deck on Wednesday. Jacob Sol, the principal of

Richard McBride Elementary, noted that all the district’s schools have comprehensive plans in place to react to minor and potentially major seismic activity. He said principals will announce over the public address system if a school needs to be evacuated after a quake, but, in the event that the P.A. system is incapacitated or,

worse, that a principal is incapacitated, teachers are empowered to make the judgment call themselves. Buildings will always automatically be emptied if there are cracks in walls or broken windows. Sweet treats: Cara Roth makes up some raw chocolate during a free class for seniors, offered by the Vancouver Raw Food School at River Market. Free sessions are held Wednesdays at the market at Westminster Quay.

Turn off the stove and go raw

Classes offer information about how to switch to a raw food lifestyle BY ANDREW FLEMING REPORTER afleming@royalcityrecord.com

A radical change in diet changed Cheryl Gauld’s life for the better, both physically and then professionally, and the longtime local community volunteer now wants to spread the news about the benefits of eating only raw food. Gauld discovered the growing health fad the hard way after waking up one morning and finding herself crippled by a sudden onset of arthritis. “I had a tragic family situation that caused me a lot of stress, and I wasn’t sleeping well,” she explained. “When you don’t sleep, hormones affect your body, and one morning I woke up and I could barely move my hands or feet.” When her condition became progressively worse, she turned her to a specialist, who immediately prescribed a plethora of pills to cure what ailed her. Gauld, however, doesn’t believe in using pharmaceuticals and so began looking for a remedy on her own. “Through my research I found out about raw foods and went to a few classes about it,” she said. “Within eight months I had completely eradicated my arthritis. I just felt fabulous and now have so much more energy. I even lost weight, although I didn’t need to.” In fact, she was so impressed with the diet that she even teamed up with her teacher/chef, Cara Roth, and the two start-

ed a new business venture – the Vancouver Raw Cooking School – together. Roth also happens to be the River Market’s newly minted chef-in-residence, and has began offering on-site weekend classes for people interested in learning about how to cook food without actually “cooking.” If you’re over 55, you don’t even have to pay to attend special morning classes offered specifically for seniors on the first and third Wednesday of every month. “It can have such huge benefits to seniors with health problems that it just didn’t seem right to charge a fee for it,” said Gauld, who is now a certified chef herself and teaches yoga on the side. “We’re kind of new and novel, and it’s not quite mainstream yet, but we’re getting there. “ A raw food diet is a serious commitment: no cooked food, nothing that’s been heated beyond 46 C (115 F), no processed, refined or pasteurized food, no animal products or sugar, and certainly no junk food. First promoted by holistic health practitioners Ann Wigmore and Herbert Shelton in the 1990s, it has slowly gained credibility and fans, including the well-preserved likes of Demi Moore, Shania Twain, Lance Armstrong, Carl Lewis and Sting. A recent study by the University of Washington school of medicine found that raw foodists generally had less chronic inflammation, lower cholesterol and less IGF-1, a growth factor associated with increased risk of breast and prostate cancers, than those with a more standard diet. It can also be a lot tastier than you might think, especially when it comes to desserts. “No matter what kind of class we are teaching, even savoury dinners, we always

Healthy eating: Cara Roth shows off some kale chips during a free class for seniors, offered by the Vancouver Raw Food School at River Market. do dessert first,” said Roth, a graduate of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. “The desserts are absolutely amazing, really decadent. “ Roth can back the claim up too after recently earning high marks at the B.C. Chefs Association Chocolate Competition at EAT! Vancouver cooking festival at B.C. Place stadium. “I entered three completely raw desserts against a bunch of conventional desserts and ended up getting third place,” said Roth. Gauld agrees that the change isn’t nearly as tough on the taste buds as people often

suspect. The man in her life, for example, apparently had no problem with her dietary conversion. “My partner is totally down with the raw food,” Gauld said with a laugh. “In fact, I think he took to it even more than I did.” For more information about classes at River Market or at other locations in Metro Vancouver, visit www.vancouverrawfood school.com. Seniors interested in attending free sessions on Wednesdays are asked to RSVP in advance by e-mailing jr@river market.ca or calling 604-520-3881. – with files from The Vancouver Sun

Hospital’s legacy lives on in friendship AROUND TOWN

THERESA MCMANUS

S

t. Mary’s Hospital may no longer be standing, but its legacy lives on in the hearts of some of its former employees. Several hospital employees continue to celebrate their 35-year friendships – relationships all developed at St. Mary’s Hospital. Each year a group of women who worked in health records department and the X-ray department get together to catch up on each other’s lives. The employees, who take turns hosting the party, also keep in touch through the year and meet to celebrate milestone birthdays.

In Eva’s name

When it became clear that she was losing her lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis, Eva Markvoort posted a goodbye video on her 65_RedRoses blog on Feb. 11, 2010. Responses poured in from all over the

world from people who sent her messages of hope and love, and thanked her for sharing her inspirational journey. Local musician Dan Mangan, who provided the closing credits song to the award winning film 65_RedRoses documentary, which followed Markvoort as she waited for a lung transplant, will be performing a benefit concert at Massey Theatre a year to the day she posted her video. Markvoort died from cystic fibrosis on March 27, 2010 at the age of 25. “Being involved with 65_RedRoses was a nobrainer,” Mangan said in a press release. “Eva embodied so many characteristics that we all strive for. Her enthusiasm and spirit quickly spread online to people all over the world who needed a voice of assurance, and I was happy to climb aboard the cause.” Mangan is headlining the concert, which also features the Zolas, Hannah Georgas and Corrina Corrina. Eva’s friend and local actress Rachel Aberle and 65_RedRoses film codirector, Philip Lyall, will MC the event. “Eva lived passionately

and with purpose, leaving a legacy of love and making a difference in the lives of thousands of people in her personal life and in her online community,” said her mom Janet Brine. “She knew how to live for the moment, and her magnetic personality drew people in at every turn. Her efforts and dreams of a cure for cystic fibrosis and for a universal opt-out organ donation system are being carried on by people who were touched by her. She continues to make a difference, and that is her legacy.” All of the artists are donating their time, and the Massey Theatre Society is providing the venue for the concert at no charge. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “The funds raised through the concert will help support the best and brightest CF researchers in B.C. and in Canada who are pursuing the next generation of CF treatments and protocols that will ultimately lead to a cure,” said Martina Meckova, director of the CCFF Vancouver chapter. Tickets are $30, plus service charge. For more

Midget Giants face biggest tests BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

The Northwest Giants could be staring the B.C. major midget hockey league season in the face this week. The second-place Giants face the league-leading Valley West Hawks in a pair of road games this weekend, with the final outcome potentially having a major bearing on how the two teams might finish the season. The following week, the Giants will host the thirdplace Greater Vancouver Canadians at the Burnaby Winter Club. “Yeah, these two weeks should place us where we finish this season. It’ll be a tough go,” said first-year Giants head coach Todd Harkins. After failing to make the playoffs at the Mac’s AAA midget tournament over the Christmas break, the Giants split last week’s two-game series with the lowly Fraser Valley Bruins at the league’s mid-season showcase tournament in Chase. The Giants lost their opening game to the Bruins 5-4 after coming back from a 4-1 deficit to knot the contest midway through the final frame. Alex Kerfoot and Scott Patterson, with the gametying goal, both scored in the third period to draw the Giants even. But Fraser Valley’s Travis Oddy notched his second of the game with just five minutes left to play to give the Bruins just

when the the two teams take to the ice in South Surrey on Saturday. Myland posted an outstanding 4-0 record last month, while posting a sparkling 0.75 goals against average. Due to an illness to the Hawks other goalie, Myland has played the majority of Valley West’s fixtures and is largely

The Douglas College Royals put together a nearclean sweep at the third badminton tournament this season. The Royals chalked up their third straight overall tournament win, winning the team competition with a perfect 5-0 record before taking all but one of the individual events in the two-day weekend tourney at Vancouver Island University Sunday. Douglas was fortunate in pulling off a 3-2 team win over the host school to remain unbeaten before meeting the only other undefeated Kwantlen team in the final set of matches. Tied 2-2 heading into the pivotal final match against Kwantlen, RuiLin Huang, the Royals twotime player of the year, teamed with Amy Leung to give Douglas the overall team title Saturday. The win gave Douglas an overall 1,009 total points in the first three tournaments and all but wraps up a sixth consecutive provincial title for the Royals.

On the following day, Sam Reinhart tallied a pair of goals to lead the Giants to a 3-0 win over the Bruins. Sean Lan got what proved to be the unassisted game-winner early in the opening frame. Scott Legault posted the shutout in goal for the Giants. Meanwhile, Valley West picked up three of four points last weekend

against the Northeast Chiefs to move three points up on the Giants in regular season standings. However, the Giants have two games in hand over the first-place Hawks. Earlier in the season, the Giants edged the Hawks with a pair of 4-3 decisions at home back in October. But Harkins maintains a lot can change in the course of a single season.

“The league is very fickle, you play the same teams over and over,” Harkins said, but added player motivation is not needed with the season virtually hanging in the balance. “At this level, you don’t really have to motivate kids for first place.” However, the Giants will likely be facing major midget player of the month Steven Myland in the nets

Local skater tops at CHL Top Prospects BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was the top prospect of them all at the Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects game in Toronto Wednesday. The No. 3-ranked prospect by NHL Central Scouting was named Team Orr player of the game following a 7-1 victory over Team Cherry at the Air Canada Centre in the televised major junior hockey showcase. Nugent-Hopkins assisted on two of Orr’s seven markers, feathering a proleague crossing pass to teammate Sven Bartschi on a two-on-one early in the second period. Bartschi, a forward with the Portland Winter Hawks, scored easily into an open net for the eventual game-winning goal. Nugent-Hopkins, who captained the Orr squad, also helped out on the team’s

second goal in a four-goal third period. The crafty centre set up Saint John Sea Dog forward Zack Phillips on a give-and-go that made the score 5-1 for Team Orr. “Playing with (Nugent-Hopkins) was a privilege. His speed and vision on the ice definitely helped me a lot tonight,” said Phillips in a Postmedia News release. Nugent-Hopkins, 17, was named Team Orr’s player of the game. Not only was the Burnaby superstar easily the best player on the ice, but he also went into the dirty areas to help out his teammates. Late in the second period, NugentHopkins went to the aid of Bartschi, who had been checked to the ice by Duncan Siemans. Vancouver Giants defenceman David Musil then stepped in and both him and Siemans received rare all-star game fighting majors. “Hopefully (the scouts) liked what they saw,” said Nugent-Hopkins in a Toronto

Sun report. “I just tried to play my game.” Nugent-Hopkins also told Postmedia News that being the final cut off Canada’s junior national team to the world championships was further incentive to improve his game. “It kind of gave me more motivation to get better and improve everything I can do,” said Nugent-Hopkins. “I tried to play my game. I had a lot of fun out there. I played my game and hopefully the scouts like what they saw.” Nugent-Hopkins was also a big factor in the skills competition a day earlier. The second-year Red Deer Rebels centre posted the second-highest score in the breakaway event, scoring twice, including one where he dragged the puck with his skate blade before flipping it back through his legs and backhanding it into an open net. The Burnaby centre led the Orr group to a win over Team Cherry, averaging

31.67 in the breakaway contest. He also had a couple of goals in the three-on-three shinny game between Team Orr and Team Cherry. Team Orr won the overall skills competition 12-11 over Team Cherry. By all accounts Nugent-Hopkins outheralded No. 2-ranked Sean Couturier of the Quebec major junior league Drummonville Votigeurs at the two-day prospects competition. Perhaps not surprisingly, Red Deer moved into the top 10 and into ninth spot among major junior hockey clubs in this week’s CHL national rankings. “(Nugent-Hopkins) showed off the vision and ability to read the game two plays ahead of most of the other players that have scouts excited about his hockey future,” said Koshan in his report. with files from Mark Masters of the Montreal Gazette and Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun

international event in as many months for the 6-4, 300-pound offensive lineman. “It is tuly an honour to take part in an event like this. I’m looking forward playing with and against players of such a high calibre,” said Wandell in a B.C. high school football press release.

Douglas would have to suffer a complete collapse at the final tournament in February in order for second-place Kwantlen to have any chance of stealing the B.C. title away, said Royals head coach Al Mawani. “We’re proud of that. But we have to stay focused though,” Mawani added. “As a team, we played really well. We woke up a bit after a close win against (Vancouver Island University).” In the individual events, Douglas took first place in women’s singles and all three final doubles matches. Huang extended her singles winning streak to 11 straight event titles, edging Royals teammate Stephanie Ko 21-19, 21-19 to extend her individual win streak to 35 consecutive matches. Huang decimated Thompson Rivers

University’s Anica Arduini 21-4, 21-3 in the other semi. Ko advanced to the final with identical 21-10 wins over Kwantlen’s Gurdeep Basran. Ko teamed with Melody Liang for first place in the women’s doubles, edging Huang and Leung 21-19, 21-19 in the final. Liang partnered with Darren Hong to win the mixed doubles 21-12, 21-16 over the Kwantlen pairing of Jensen Ly and Ashley Jang. Hong and Rey Luo were given a challenge by TRU’s Garrett Babichuk and Alex Perkin in a men’s doubles semifinal. The Royal duo slipped into the men’s final with a 22-20, 17-21, 21-19 victory. Hong and Luo then swept Simon Wu and Willis Kwee of Kwantlen in the final. Luo settled for a silver medal in the men’s singles behind winner Peter Huang

of Capilano. Luo defeated Pierre Tang of Langara 21-9, 22-20 in the semifinals. “I was quite happy with Rey,” said Mawani of Luo, who seemed to find his form after a club competition in Calgary earlier in the month. “It may have helped, I’m not sure, but he played very well this weekend.” Mawani was also buoyed by a recent walkon player, who’s inspired addition to the team has been much welcomed. “He’s very athletic and a good addition to the team,” said Mawani of long-distance athlete Kristopher Axness. “He brings some fresh energy to our team. It gives us a different look.” The Royals will host the final tournament of the season at the Douglas College David Lam campus in Coquitlam on Feb. 12 and 13.

The Northwest giants Alex Kerfoot scored the game-winning goal for Team White in a 6-5 win over Team Blue at the major midget all-star game in Chase Jan. 15. Kerfoot, who garnered the game’s second star, also opened the scoring for Team White in the first period.

What services can you provide on these sites? • Administrative work including creating documents, data entry, writing letters • ‘Virtual Assistant’ work – making calls, taking calls, performing tasks, organizing, customer support • Writing for any area including reports, articles, websites, ghost writing, blogs • Computer programming of any kind or websites and ecommerce development • Business, HR, or Marketing consulting • Graphic arts for brochures, reports, logos • Research for reports, articles, marketing, sales or product development • Accounting, engineering, legal, and other professional work • And much, much more… In reviewing these sites I have noticed that there are providers from all over the world. This does mean that on some project bids you will be competing with some admin services being offered for as little as $5 per hour. Although this may undercut rates we would bid from North America (based on our wage rates and cost of living), there are many service providers charging reasonable rates who are winning projects due to the relevance of their skills and experience, language proficiency, and the quality of their portfolio and sample work. So what do you have to offer? Check it out at: www.odesk.com/jobs, www.guru.com/pro, www.elance.com For help finding the work you love, call Transitions Career & Business Consultants, coordinators of The Transitions Program, a free 3 week career exploration program available to all unemployed people at 604-434-1177 or 604-681-2774.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Secrets, depths, sexual urges, subconscious nudges, large finances, net worth, other people’s money and resources – these fill the weeks ahead. Research, look beneath surface appearances. Love vows or business agreements are one thing; commitment to share, delivering the funds, is another. Now it’s commitment time. You either get deeper, or break off. Tackle errands Sunday morning. Home, kids and security, nature and nutrition capture your attention this eve to Tuesday. Romance has a bit of a rough ride mid-week. Still, joy exists! Tackle chores Friday/Saturday – you succeed! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The emphasis lies on relationships, relocation, contracts, negotiations, opportunities and opposition. Emotions intensify; there’s little middle ground. Love and hate swirl. Your romantic sensors are fine-tuned, and luck flows into all communications. In short, you might fall in love now or soon, or heal a valuable, longterm bond. This week isn’t the easiest, or the hardest. Communications, travel succeed Sunday p.m. to Tuesday. Recuperate, rest mid-week. Various frictions arise, perhaps with a partner. Be diplomatic. Romance, creativity, luck soar Thursday night to Saturday! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A time of great change is upon you. It might affect where you live. It’s lucky, and occurs now to early June. During the same period, your romantic, creative and child-oriented projects/links will tread water – that gives you the time and focus to concentrate on this change. It is the first of two steps – the second one occurs November to July 2012. That second one won’t be so much lucky as “telling,” perhaps hectic, certainly filled with determination. Make your move soon. Invest, commit, seek sexual intimacy, change your lifestyle. Thursday night to Saturday holds clues!

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Tackle chores Sunday – be safe with tools, electricity. This eve to Tuesday afternoon brings happy, flirty, friendly relationships. Don’t be argumentative Monday. Though mid-week tempts you toward research, investments or sexual intimacy, or nudges you to make a commitment to a person or lifestyle, you’d be wise to wait. Your future will develop best if right now you are social, if you play, plan and dream. Rewards come from past efforts, not present ones. Gentle, mellow love and understanding, travel and legal success float in late Thursday night through Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: Legal matters might slow now to June, particularly those involving work, health or machinery. So might far travel, religious projects and higher studies – in these, “revisit old haunts.” For instance, you’ll succeed in school if you resurrect an old project or study subjects you’ve studied before. Sunday afternoon to Tuesday brings work and health concerns. The weeks ahead reward ambition, so plunge into tasks. Relationships can be irksome midweek. Be diplomatic; don’t push your own agenda. Secrets, depths, sexual attractions and finances – all luckily – fill Friday/Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The weeks ahead beneficially emphasize higher learning, legal affairs, far travel, cultural involvements/rituals and gentle love. Sleep in Sunday morning. This eve to Tuesday brings romantic situations, pleasure and beauty, passion and risk. Your creative juices flow. Gambling, however, might hurt your bank account. Reject investments for now. (Until June, new investments are ill advised. Stick with those already in the works.) Work and health issues arrive late Tuesday through Thursday. Good and bad luck are mixed, so just plod ahead. Relationships excite, reward Friday/Saturday!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The month ahead emphasizes romance, creativity and speculative luck. Until June, you stand on the edge of momentous events, prospects and opportunities. You might marry. For the best luck, relocate, negotiate, seek agreements and contracts, interface with the public, grab opportunities, form business partnerships or alliances, or seek marriage. (Some Librans, bound in unhappiness, might divorce now. But this influence might also “cure” your marriage. Can you give it one more try?) Rest Sunday daytime. This eve to Tuesday, your energy and charisma soar. Money caution mid-week. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Your workload will increase now to June. Just plod through if you have no enthusiasm. But realize this work can be the entry hall to one or two major career or business opportunities, to arrive after May, into mid-2012. For the next six years, your money fortunes are on an extended rise! But it starts with work. Tamp down any domestic friction to late February: be gentle, kind. Pride wrecks love. Lie low, rest early week. Your energy surges back Tuesday night through Thursday. Thursday night to Saturday brings the first hint of your coming money luck. Get frequent rest these weeks. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Love, romance, creative projects, speculation, sports, risks, selfexpression, dealings with children – these meet great luck and opportunity now to June. The month ahead features talk, travel, curiosity – so get curious! Travel and casual conversations can – no, will – lead to good things, romance among them! Uphold your reputation early Sunday. This eve to Tuesday brings social delights, flirtations and wish fulfilment! Retreat, rest and contemplate future obstacles mid-week. Your energy and charisma climb Thursday night to Saturday – start projects, ask favours, see and be seen.

Jan. 23 - Jan. 20 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The weeks ahead emphasize money, earnings, buying/selling, possessions, sensual attractions and memory. Accept surface appearances; they will tend to be true, and questioning will “sour the atmosphere.” Lots of money might come! But be self-disciplined: spending can get out of control. Now to June, you are powerfully favoured to purchase (and sell) real estate, to heal family issues, to find security, and to end limiting situations, projects and conditions. (You might see and chuck these luckily Friday/Saturday.) February is one of the best months to combine money and property. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness soar for the next few weeks. Start important projects, ask favours, seek permission, impress bosses, colleagues. Your determination and sex appeal (which are always linked) are unusually high now through February. Sunday morning has a mysterious cast, but this eve toTuesday brings wisdom, gentle love and understanding. Be ambitious midweek, but be diplomatic. You might push just because you have extra energy, but others could feel you’re abrasive. Wishes come true Friday/Saturday – expect social joys, entertainment, flirtation, happiness! Pisces Feb.19-March 20: Retreat for a while.Gather your energies and your thoughts. Rest, contemplate, let the world go by. Be charitable, spiritual. The few weeks ahead favour dealing with government, taxes, institutions and large corporations. Study a money plan, rework it until it’s perfect. Soon – by March at the latest – money will start flowing your way, perhaps a huge pile of money. Students could win scholarships, consultants might land a big client, etc. But now is preparation time. Avoid belligerent people, unsavoury places. Sunday to Tuesday is mysterious. Be ambitious Friday/Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
